Still Alice
Run All Night We get another crime drama now with Liam Neeson (Taken) heading the cast as hit-man Jimmy Conlon, more commonly known as The Gravedigger. Jimmy worked for the mob and was best friends with the boss, Sean Maguire (Ed Harris). Things take a bad turn when Jimmy’s son Michael gets marked for death by the mob and Jimmy must now go up against Sean to protect his son at all cost. The Voices Something a bit different now with a dark comedy starring Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, The Proposal) as Jerry, a man who is mentally ill and fails to take his anti-psychotic medication. As he attempts to pursue an office crush he starts to hear voices, namely from his cat Mr Whiskers who tells him to become a serial killer and his dog who argues against the cat. As Jerry sporadically starts to take his medication again and he has moments of lucidity, he begins to realise that his life is already more violent that he first thought it to be. Now this may sound like a strange concept as a man hears voices coming from his pets but
Reynolds plays the mentally ill man deliciously dark which makes this film very enjoyable. But don't let the talking animals lead you to believe this isn’t also filled with plenty of violence and gore. Not for everyone but a good watch all the same. Release date: 20th March
Cinderella
Chesterfield 1st
Even if there is still someone out there that hasn’t seen any films about Cinderella, I’m sure they’re still aware of how the story goes. Ella (Lily James) lives with her father who has re-married after the death of the mother. She welcomes her new step-mother Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters, Anastasia and Drizella. But then Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away and she’s left at the mercy of her new family who relegate her to nothing more than a servant girl and cruelly renames her Cinderella as she spends most of her time in the cinders. But, despite her circumstances she refuses to give up hope and holds onto her courage to honour her mother. There are a couple of new twists in this version. Ella meets the prince before the ball at a chance meeting in the March/April 2015
woods and he pretends that he is just an employee at the palace. And the Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) also appears earlier, disguised as a beggar as she watches over Ella. This is the next one on the list for live-action remakes coming from the Disney studios after the recent success of Maleficent. No doubt this will bring in the audience numbers as fans of Disney are nothing if not loyal followers. Release date: 27th March

Volunteers Needed… …For New Bluebell Wood Charity Shop. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is to open a new charity shop in Chesterfield on 19th March. The shop, which will stock good quality second hand items ranging from toys and clothes to a variety of new goods, is set to be opened by a Bluebell Wood family. The charity is currently looking for friendly volunteers with good communication skills to help sort, size and tag donations. They may also need people to help serve customers and operate the till during the shop’s opening hours, which will be 9am-4.30pm every Monday to Saturday. Retail Manager at Bluebell Wood, James Bower said: ‘Volunteers are vital in raising much-needed funds for the hospice. The people who dedicate just a few hours of their spare time are a valuable part of the Bluebell Wood team.’
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy. Everyone Can Mediate… FREE Public Talk in Chesterfield Meditation is a commonly used word but many don't understand its true meaning and relevance to modern living. Some think meditation is for sick people, or for those who have abandoned all their worldly responsibilities. Nothing could be further from the truth as you will learn at this event. Kadam Bridget is a western teacher who has been practising Buddhist meditation for over 20 years under the guidance of the renowned teacher Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. She has been able to successfully integrate meditation into her busy family life and run a thriving centre near Northampton all at the same time. Shes is perfectly qualified therefore to explain how everyone today can practice meditation in normal daily life, and more importantly why. Meditation is an action of mind whose nature is to concentrate single pointedly on a meaningful
object and whose function is to make the mind progressively more and more peaceful. We want to be happy all the time but how can we do this? We can do this through training in meditation because meditation makes the mind peaceful, and when our mind is peaceful we are happy all the time, even if our external conditions are poor. Through this we can see that through training in meditation we cam free ourself permanently from all the sufferings of life and attain a lasting and fulfilling happiness. We would therefore like to encourage everyone to come along to this special event. You will have the opportunity to speak to the organizers, browse books and publicity, and talk about the availability of weekly meditation classes in the area. You can even request a class in your local town.
classes, courses and workshops on a weekly basis, including weekends and evenings. They are all suitable for everyone from any walk of life. You don't have to be a Buddhist to enjoy and benefit from these classes. The Public talk will be given by internationally renowned Buddhist teacher, Kadam Bridget Heyes at Chesterfield Central Library, New Beetwell Street S40 1QN Tuesday 14th April 6.30 - 8.30pm. The event is free but donations are welcome. Booking not necessary. You can find more details about all our classes at www.heartjewel.org.uk or ring 01629 581585

Churchfitters… The Churchfitters will be appearing at Hollingwood Hub (S43 2JP) in Staveley, near Chesterfield on Tuesday 24th March at 7.30 p.m. "One of my favourite bands" Mike Harding (BBC Radio 2). The Churchfitters are a folk band like no other. A double bass made out of a saucepan. Heart-wrenching vocals accompanied by a musical saw. Foot-stompingly fast fiddle meets funk-rock rhythms. And traditional tunes reinvigorated with mesmerising jazz sax. An evening in their company is an uplifting experience that sends everyone home happy. The band is based in Brittany, and presents a fast-paced show full of fresh, original, song writing as well as rearranged songs and tunes. They are rooted in traditional folk music but enjoy a
crossover into the rhythms of rock, pop and jazz. Outstanding vocals and an astonishing array of acoustic instruments - including flute, banjo, dulcimer, tin whistle, guitar, ukulele, electric hub-cap bass-bouzouki and a sackful of percussion - allow them to create their unmistakable sound. Originally founded in 1978, the group has evolved in to today's current line-up: Rosie, with a voice reminiscent of Annie Lennox in full flow, is a one woman orchestra with a selection of wind, stringed and percussion instruments; Chris is a fiddle wizard and master of the musical saw, and Boris, part bassist, part mad inventor, brings his fantastic selection of homemade instruments, including recycled double bass, frying pan banjo and let’s not forget the
‘bing-bong’ machine made out of hack-saw blades! Throw in some exquisite harmonies, original songs and a few jokes that create instant rapport and you’ve got a high energy show that often gets people dancing and always leaves audiences cheering. Tickets cost £9 and are available online from the Chesterfield Canal Trust website or ring 01246 477569. Nona's Coffee Shop will be open from 6.30 p.m. There is onsite parking.
