Nominations were accepted for people who live or work in the Bolsover District or within five miles of Clowne. This is the fourth year that Elastic FM has organised and hosted the ceremony which celebrates those businesses that have contributed to to local community. The standard of this year’s nominations was incredibly high and the panel of judges had a real challenge to select the winning individuals, community organisations and businesses. PETS CORNER - To Spay or Not To Spay…

We often get asked when dogs come into us at Calagran Four Paws Hotel whether we recommend spaying and in general our answer is yes as it holds so many advantages for you and your dog. However, I thought this month it might be worth explaining the pros and cons of spaying,. Advantages Like in human’s seasons can be messy, so not having them for both you and the dog can be a huge benefit. Then there is the issue having to ensure your dog is kept away from those un castrated males who may have their eye on her during her season and they will go to amazing lengths at times to get their way including breaking into gardens. Also seasons don’t always come at exact dates which can be inconvenient if you have things planned including your dog. There are also medical advantages to spaying including not getting pregnant and the complications involved. They are also protected –from phantom pregnancies which can plague some dogs as well.

Included in this list is also prevention of uterine infections and also the prevention of some cancers like ovarian and uterine carcinomas. There is also good evidence that spaying provides some protection against breast cancer which is one of the most common cancers in female dogs. Disadvantages Sadly, everything has two sides and there are always disadvantages to consider. The first is that spayed and castrated dogs do tend to put on weight more easily and this can lead to all sorts of joint issues. So if you do decide to spay you will need to keep a close eye on your dog’s shape and weight and adapt the feeding amounts to her new metabolism post spaying. The other thing to remember is spaying is still quite a large operation, albeit a common and well understood one. Your dog will still face the same complications all operations in dogs and human face which are adverse reactions to anaesthesia, potential infections or bleeding complications. While uncommon in such a routine operation they can never be eliminated.

Spaying can also play a part in making a dog more susceptible to Hypothyroidism. It isn’t fully understood why but taking away the reproductive hormones can trigger changes in the endocrine system which may in a small number of cases result in thyroid changes. There is also one cancer that in certain breeds can be more common in spayed dogs and that is a cancer of the heart and spleen. Whilst more common this by no means makes them likely – check with your vet if you are concerned. The final thing to say about spaying is that it should not be done too early before the reproductive hormones have done their job in growth and development. Spaying too early can cause incontinence and increases the risk of joint issues and bone cancer. When is too early, can be discussed with your vet as no one rule fits all.

into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of President Asher, Secret Service agent Banning, Vice President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman, The Shawshank Redemption) and a British MI6 agent (Charlotte Riley, Peaky Blinders, In the Heart of the Sea) who rightly trusts no one. This does seem to be one of those ‘America is the Greatest’ films but the level of action should please most people who are fans of that sort of thing.

The sequel to 2013 hit Olympus has Fallen; London sees the return of many of the principal characters from the first film. Gerard Butler (300, P.S. Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice The anticipation for this film has been high ever since it was revealed Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl) would be putting on the iconic Bat outfit in this new outing for the caped crusader. The concept behind it has probably been debated between young kids for many years, who would win in a fight, Batman or Superman? Well, the answer may finally be answered in this new film. Following the events of Man of Steel, Gotham City-based vigilante Batman travels to Metropolis fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked and takes him on while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat called Doomsday, is created by Lex

Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network). It’s now up to the two heroes to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot, Fast and Furious films) to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis. In true superhero style the set pieces will be huge and the special affects will be on point so any person who is remotely a fan of the Marvel and DC universes will enjoy this latest outing a lot. Toula (Nia Vardalos, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Ian (John Corbett, Sex and the City) are back and they now have a teenage daughter who has begun to feel the pressures and embarrassments that comes with belonging to a large Greek family. Russell Grant’s Horoscopes - March time to paint, play music or design works of beauty. A work assignment will come to an end near the 23rd, due to a Lunar Eclipse. Try not to let this situation cause lots of stress. You have to clear the decks to make way for fresh opportunities. GEMINI May 22nd June 21st

ARIES March 21st April 20th Whom you know is just as important as what you know in early March. Get out and network. Attend as many parties, conferences and casual gatherings as you can. People born in foreign countries can be especially helpful. Don't waste time arguing about cultural and religious differences; concentrate on building bridges instead. It may be difficult to find privacy, due to a meddling colleague. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could prompt you to retreat into the shadows for a long period of time. You're tired of being picked apart by petty critics. An opportunity to find meaningful work could arrive in the second half of the month. Publishing, education and travel are all good industries to explore for career opportunities. A close relationship will show signs of strains on the 23rd, due to a stressful Lunar Eclipse. Taking a solitary holiday is strongly advised as April approaches. Visit a country that has fascinated you since childhood. TAURUS April 21st May 21st You'll be in the spotlight as the month opens, which is quite enjoyable. Making a good impression on authority figures will lead to career advancement. Your love life is also showing signs of life. If you're looking for romance, you could find it with someone who has an attractive accent. Beware of neglecting friends as you get closer to your amour. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th marks an important occasion for a loved one; be sure to attend a birthday party, baby shower or general celebration. During the second half of March, your creative impulses will be stimulated. This will be a great

16

Spending more time on spiritual pursuits will be rewarding. You're tired of focusing on money and status. Fortunately, early March will bring exciting opportunities to study, travel and do research. You might have to cut back your work schedule to acquire important knowledge and take tests. Your best friend or romantic partner will provide you with additional support during this busy time. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could attract a career opportunity. It may best to turn down this job offer, as there are considerable strings attached. Finding a way to work from home is a distinct possibility during the second half of the month. The results of a creative project will be disappointing on the 23rd, when a Lunar Eclipse causes harsh critics to come out of the woodwork. Try to take this disappointment with a pinch of salt. Treat this challenge as a test of character. Pick yourself up and dust yourself off. CANCER June 22nd July 23rd Your allure is very strong in early March, making it easy to attract romance. Spending time with an attentive romantic partner will make you feel like you're walking on air. Don't make the mistake of joining bank accounts just now. It may be better to maintain your financial independence from an attractive but irresponsible partner. Work will be demanding during the first half of the month. It may be necessary to study with a stuffy but experienced colleague. On the 9th, a Solar Eclipse could cause a legal problem to erupt. It may be better to settle out of court than be subjected to a long, expensive courtroom drama. During the second half of March, your business or romantic partner will spread the word of your talent. Landing a lucrative assignment is a distinct possibility. It may be necessary to move around the 23rd, when a Lunar Eclipse makes emergency repairs necessary.

LEO July 24th August 23rd Two heads are better than one in the early days of March. This is a great time to embark on a serious romance, get engaged or sign a contract. You're particularly drawn to rebellious types who are tremendously accomplished. If you're already in a relationship, it will feel like you and your amour are enjoying a second honeymoon. An unexpected expense will arise on the 9th, due to a disruptive Solar Eclipse. Fortunately, you'll be able to land a steady job during the second half of the month. This work will help you pay the bills and stay financially afloat. A troubled relationship with a relative or neighbour could come to an end near the 23rd. That's when a Lunar Eclipse will force you to face some painful realities. Going away on an extended break can help you to come to terms with this loss as April approaches. It will be a relief to escape familiar surroundings. VIRGO August 24th September 23rd Invest in new clothes or a makeover during the early days of March. Looking your best will improve both your personal and professional lives. If you're single, you could meet someone special in a library, bookstore or classroom. Are you already in a relationship? Your union could experience some difficulty around the 9th, due to a disruptive Solar Eclipse. Being more attentive, supportive and giving is critical to this union's health. Don't impose your family's beliefs on your amour. The two of you may have been raised very differently. It's unfair to expect them to have the same priorities and values. Finding a middle ground is possible during the second half of the month, when you'll be able to make some personal sacrifices on behalf of your partner. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd will cause a source of income to dry up. Don't panic. It may take time to find a steady job, so be patient. amusements, even if it means putting work on the back burner. Let a relative, neighbour or friend introduce you to a new sport or hobby. You may discover an affinity for this pursuit. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could make you aware of a health problem. It may take some time to get this illness properly diagnosed. Be patient and don't subject your body to intense workouts or heavy foods. Some holistic therapy could be helpful during the second half of the month. Let your best friend or romantic partner relieve you of chores while you recover. You may decide to upgrade your appearance on the 23rd, due to a Lunar Eclipse. Saying goodbye to the past and embracing a more cutting edge look is strongly advised. A business or romantic partner can help you with valuable knowledge and know how as April approaches. SCORPIO October 24th November 22nd Spending time with your nearest and dearest lifts your spirits in early March. If you have a chance to work from home, take it. You'll be much more productive in familiar, comfortable surroundings. Moneymaking opportunities are available to you, but you'll have to pursue them. Adopting a passive stance could cause you to lose a terrific job to a rival. Be willing to promote your abilities and introduce yourself to influential people who can advance your cause. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could force you to adopt a new approach to your creative work. Be open to criticism, even if it stings a little. There will be lots of trial and error involved with an art project during the second half of the month. A tasteful friend will offer good advice about improving your performance. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd will force you out of the shadows. You'll have to assume a more public role at work. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st People will be open to your ideas in the opening days of the month. Use your expertise to uplift and inspire newcomers who want to make a mark in your favourite field. A home improvement project will increase the value of your investment. ICONS

Fred Astaire Debonair, charming and extraordinarily graceful, Fred Astaire was the ultimate Hollywood song-and-dance man. He revolutionized dance on camera, both Born: Frederick Austerlitz as a solo May 10, 1899 Omaha, Nebraska, USA dancer and paired with a Died: June 22, 1987 Los Angeles, California, succession of dancing USA actresses, most famously Ginger Rogers. In his signiture top hat, white tie and tails, Astaire was a popular romantic lead in the 1930’s and 1940’s, despite his lack of movie-star good looks. He also made some of the best-loved films of the time, from Top Hat with Rogers (1935) to Silk Stockings with Cyd Charisse (1957). Astaires career began at the tender age of seven, as a vaudeville partner to his older sister, Adele. The pair made it to Broadway in 1917, working with the Gershwins and starring in shows such as Lady Be Good (1924) and Funny Face (1927). Following Adele’s marriage and retirement in 1932, Hollywood came calling in the form of David O. Selznick, who signed Astaire to RKO and partnered him with Ginger Rogers, in a sequence of unmatchable films which elevated both leads to stardom. Katharine Hepburn reportedly said: ‘he gives her class, she gives him sex.’ Astaire’s light tenor married well with Roger’s breathy soprano, but it was the quality of the dancing that set their films apart. The choreography, by Astair and Hermes Pan, introduced dance as an

intrinsic element of the Hollywood film musical; six of the nine musicals Astaire created for RKO became their biggest money makers. Astaire’s work later with song-and-dance partners tends to get overshadowed by the glamour and nostalgia of the Astaire/Rogers years. But his movie work continued to be fresh and innovative. Broadway Melody of 1940 featured an extended dance routine with the brilliant tap-dancer Eleanor Powell, who was Astaire’s first partner after Rogers. You’ll Never Get Rich (1941), with Rita Hayworth, allowed Astaire to introduce Latin American dance rhythms into his routines and after a brief retirement in 1946, he came storming back to make Easter Parade (1949) opposite Judy Garland. His co-stars in the 1950’s incuded Jane Powell, Leslie Caron and Audrey Hepburn (Funny Face, 1957). After 30 musical films in 25 years, Astaire turned in the 1960’s and 1970’s to series of Emmy-winning music and dance specials made for television and to straight film. He received his only Oscar nomination, as Best Supporting Actor, for his role in The Towering Inferno (1974). As a singer, Astaire introduced and left his mark on classics such as Fascinating Rhythm, Foggy Day and Nice Work Of You Can Get It. As a virtuoso dancer, with superb technical control and an innate sense of rhythm, he drew his influences from a wide range of sources, from tap dance to ballet to ballroom. The result was his ‘I’m just a hoofer with a uniquely spare set of tails’, said personal ‘outlaw Fred Astaire, whose long style’, which is career lasted an still influential incredible 76 years. today.

Your Mind Matters With Roxy… Hi readers, I’m absolutely thrilled to be writing a column for 1st Mags! Huge congratulations to Paula and Kay as they were recently finalists in the “Business of the Year” category at the Elastic FM Community awards. I was overwhelmed and thrilled to be a joint winner in ‘New Business of the Year’ category, and very cheekily asked if I could write for you all. So let’s get to it! I’m Roxanne Rhodes and I’m a psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist and coach with a private practice in Clowne. Let’s talk hypnotherapy as this is the area that fascinates People. Hypnotherapy is, in its most basic sense, a focused state of attention, often referred to as a trance state. This is a perfectly natural state and we go in and out of trance all of the time. How many times have you driven somewhere and not really remembered the journey? Stared at the same page in a book for 10 minutes We are a small as your mind wanders? Yep, self-funding rescue autopilot - or trance state. that help as many Children are especially good at animals in need as this. I can call to my toddler we can. Hypnotherapy is often thought to be similar to stage hypnotism. IT’S NOT!! I promise that while you’re safely relaxed in the big armchair in my office I’m not planning on making Please could you like our Facebook page you do star jumps when a bell https://www.facebook.com/chesterfieldanimalrescue rings (unless you’re coming for

weight loss hypnotherapy Perhaps!! ) Hypnotherapy is always for your own good. Therapy in general is designed to help you move forwards in life, however we have those evil mind monkeys in our brains that yell “you can’t do this”, “you’re not clever enough”, “you’ll never be confident enough”, “your mum and grandma were both depressed so you will always be”. The beauty of hypnotherapy is that it bypasses these mind monkeys that live in the logical part of your brain. It goes in through the side door so to speak, so that we can work on the subconscious, or emotional part of your brain. By doing this we escape the resistance that’s created by all these doubting thoughts and messages that you say to yourself over and over again. Lots of people feel like they’ve been asleep during hypnotherapy. Now that’s a lovely feeling, but of course it isn’t true. Your brain is working very hard, and is in fact in the same state we go into when dreaming. If you’d like to find about more about hypnotherapy, or therapy in general then have a look at my website or contact me using the below details. See you next month.
