Ashgate Hospice…
Peter’s scootin’ good idea to raise funds for hospice A gentleman has found a novel way of using his mobility scooter to raise funds as a thank you to the hospice that cares and supports him and his family. Peter Hardy, from Holmewood in Chesterfield, decided to hook up a trailer made by his friend onto his mobility scooter and collect tin cans to recycle for cash, not only as a way of supporting Ashgate Hospice, but also to help clear up the streets. Peter, 67, said, “I’ve been collecting cans for about three years now. At first, I did it for wild birds. I now collect cans for Ashgate from becoming ill and what I get from cans goes to the hospice. The more I keep doing, the better I feel. In myself, I feel better.” Over the past few months, Peter’s efforts haven’t gone un-noticed and he now has people saving up their cans for him to cash in for the hospice. “I get a lot of help from the public. They’ll bring them to me, put them over the fence and the bit of exercise I get does me good. I’m getting what I want out of it; it’s for them now that’s how I look at it. “This is a big hobby of mine now. I enjoy it when I go out, that’s why I don’t rush
about. I go out, I enjoy what I’m doing and if the Hospice gets something out of it, that’s a good thing. “I’ve never wanted anything for nothing so I always feel that if you have something you’ve got to give something back.” Peter wanted to thank the hospice in his own way for the care and support that has been provided to him since he started to attend their Day Unit in early 2013 to help with symptoms and managing medication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). “The Hospice in itself when you go through the doors; it’s as if someone has lifted a weight off your shoulders.” “When you’re ill and you go to them it alters everything; how you look at things - everything. They’ve done marvellous for me. I love going.” As well as his fundraising, Peter has also discovered some new hobbies thanks to the activities he has undertaken with his time at the hospice, including glass painting and poetry. Peter added, “I never, ever thought I’d do oil painting, acrylic painting and poetry. I didn’t like poetry at school because I never understood it. The poetry volunteer is teaching us to understand it, how
to put it together and actually how to write it. With what comes out, I’m right impressed with it.” In addition to the activities that are provided in the Day Unit, patients primarily attend for medical and nursing needs based on their condition. During time at the Day Unit, a patient is able to access other hospice services, such as physiotherapy and complimentary therapy, and their time spent during the day allows a patient’s relatives or carers to have some respite time of their own. A donation of £54 could pay for a patient to attend our day hospice. Alongside the day unit and a 21-bed inpatient unit, Ashgate Hospice nurses make more than 3,000 home visits and have over 4,000 face to face contacts with patients at Chesterfield Royal Hospital every single year. All of the services provided by Ashgate are free of charge. Running Ashgate Hospice costs £6.8 million a year. The hospice receives NHS funding of £2.5m so needs to raise a further £4.3m to ensure these vital services can continue to be provided.

PETS CORNER - Dangers in the garden…
Cat behaviour Here at Calagran Four Paws Hotel we deal with giving cats as well as dogs a great holiday so thought it was about time this month we turned our attention to the feline furry friends in our life. How they behave and why? Why do Cats silent meow? – There are a number of theories on this one but the most interesting is that the meow is actually not silent but the pitch and frequency are too high to be audible to humans, a bit like a dog whistle. Why do some cats love catnip? – Catnip is a plant with the proper name of Nepeta Cataria. The active chemical in the plant is Neptalactone. In studies it has been shown that Neptalactone in about 80% of cats can have the same effect on a cat as LSD has on humans. Fortunately the effect is short lived and harmless. Why do cats have rough tongues? – It is suggested that there are two main reasons for the roughness of a
cats tongue. The main one is to have a built in grooming device. The cats tongue actually has built in hook shaped barbs that face backwards. These are great for grooming but also historically it is very effective for removing flesh from the bones of prey that has fallen victim to the feline. Why do cats find non cat people more attractive? – Generally people who like cats will behave in a way that puts cats off and vice versa. Cat lovers will stare at a cat, move towards them and make gestures in their direction both verbal and physical. Cats find this forward approach threatening and often back away. Conversely non cat lovers won’t look or move towards the cat and they find this non-threatening and intriguing and so much to the non-cat lover’s dismay will actually encourage the cat’s curiosity and approach. Why do cats hate aerosol sprays? – There are a number of reasons why cats aren’t happy when you spray that air freshener near them.
Firstly the noise sounds like that of an aggressive cat hissing so this immediately puts cats on their guard. Secondly the hairs on cat’s bodies help them feel their surroundings and the spray will agitate these quickly and suddenly which will also be unpleasant. Finally cats sense of smell like dogs are much better than ours and so that air freshener may not smell quite as nice to them. There is so much more to understand about our feline friends but I hope that wets your appetite to find out more. Just one last word for this month to let you know that Calagran Four Paws Hotel is growing our services and this month has seen our new securely fenced two acre play park paddock opened for guests of the hotel and for hire by the hour. Also we are very t month… excited Until ntoexannounce the opening of a new grooming parlour onsite, Paws Galore run by Gemma Baron.

Becky’s Movie Previews Now the clocks have been turned back the nights will be drawing in quicker as we get closer to the end of the year. To escape the cold, here’s what will be gracing our cinema screens in the coming months.
Coming Soon…
Interstellar
Not too far from current affairs, this film focuses on the ever popular topic of our limited resources on Earth and what can be done to survive when we run out. The emphasis is on the limits of food on Earth and when a wormhole is discovered, explorers and scientists unite to embark on a journey through it, transcending the normal limits of human space travel. Among the travellers is a widowed
engineer (McConaughey) who must decide whether he can leave his two children behind in an effort to attempt to save humanity from the now environmentally devastated Earth. This film has a full starring cast that includes Matthew McConaughey (The Dallas Buyers Club, Magic Mike), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserable) and Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Trilogy) as well as being directed by none other than Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy) who’s reputation for big budget and visually stimulating films should make this interesting viewing. Release date: 07.11.2014
The Imitation Game A film that has been highly received from audiences and critics alike, The Imitation Game follows the true story of British Mathematician and pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), who was a central figure in cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code during World War II. This in turn helped the Allies to win the war. The story follows key moments of Alan’s life. It shows his unhappy life at boarding school, the triumph of his secret wartime work on a revolutionary computer that in turn was capable of breaking 3,000 Enigma-generated codes a day and the tragedy of his post-war decline as he was convicted of gross indecency, the now outdated law that criminalises anyone who carries on a homosexual relationship.
14
It has had tremendous success at the various screenings at film festivals, most notably winning People’s Choice Award for Best Film at the Toronto Film Festival, the highest award of the festival. Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Fifth Estate) himself has been tipped to receive awards in the coming season for his portrayal of Turing. We also see some of our greatest British talents in the film, as well as Cumberbatch there’s Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Matthew Goode and Charles Dance. This is a film not to be missed. Get On Up A musical biopic for you now as this film chronicles the life of The Godfather of Soul, James Brown. We not only see the years he was a huge star, but also how he got there and his difficult childhood growing up with an abusive father, a mother who didn’t want him and living with his Aunt who ran a brothel. He began as a gospel singer, as many from the South do and had a spell in prison for stealing a suit; here he meets Bobby
Byrd who would also be in his eventual band The Famous Flames. He developed over the years in his band, even travelling to Vietnam to entertain the black troops. Looking at the life of a man many only know as the larger than life soul singer, this film looks intimately at the events that shaped the entertainer he came to be. Release date: 21.11.2014
Paddington One for kids and adults alike now as a childhood favourite for so many is being brought to the big screen. Everyone knows the story of Paddington Bear, from the Peruvian jungle that has a passion for all things British and travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise city life isn’t what he imagined. That is until he meets the kindly Brown family who offer him a temporary haven, thus giving him his full name, Paddington Brown. And with a penchant for getting into trouble, this is sure to be a fun-filled adventure for all the family to enjoy.

Terrifying Tales at Chesterfield Town WI… The lights were turned low for a haunting evening this month at Chesterfield Town WI. Mr Rob Pilmore from Chesterfield Ghost Trail (www.chesterfield-ghost-trail.co.uk) delighted the ladies with spooky anecdotes about ghost sightings and grisly murders at many of our wonderful Chesterfield landmarks. These included Sun Inn, Yorkshire Bank, Royal Oak and of course our very own Crooked Spire! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the theatre of Mr Pilmore‘s wonderfully entertaining style.

November In The Garden‌
As we head towards winter and the nights are drawing in fast, there are still lots of things to do in the garden. General tasks would include keeping your garden free from debris and leaves, raising your pots off the ground to protect from frosts and aid drainage. If you have been using hoses and irrigation now is the time to pack them away and lag and drain taps. In the greenhouse a thorough clean is essential to remove any lingering pests or diseases. Ventilate on warmer days to circulate air this will also help keep down diseases. Autumn is a great time to plant out trees and shrubs these include hedging and roses too.
Plant your bulbs if you haven't already done so this will provide a welcome splash of late winter early spring colour. Continue to plant bedding and containers with some of the following which are readily available , pansies, violas, winter cabbages, primroses, bulbs, ivy etc. If you have a veg plot now is the time to rough dig any unplanted areas leaving rough clumps for the frosts to break down.

Madeline was finally put into the water at Staveley Town Basin on the Chesterfield Canal on 26th June in time for the Chesterfield Canal Festival, where it was inspected and admired by many members of the public.
Madeline is used by the Chesterfield Canal Trust to run public trips from Hollingwood Hub on Saturdays. Originally only scheduled to run in the summer holidays, they have proved very popular, so the season has been extended until the end of October. They will restart in April. All takings are split equally between the school and the Trust.
Since then, the school has made much use of Madeline, firstly on an Activities Week and subsequently for familiarisation cruises. A full course of Science work, based around the boat, is currently being written. Madeline will soon be used by Eckington feeder schools.
