Small Derbyshire Village is The Best!… The small Derbyshire village of Elmton was voted the “Best Small Village” in the East Midlands at the In Bloom awards ceremony held at the Winding Wheel, Chesterfield on 18th September. Receiving its first Gold award in the competition it beat off rivals from Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, the villagers can be justly proud of their small rural community. The awards didn’t stop there. Elmton Green was voted to have the best Wildlife and Conservation Area for which a glass trophy was presented. This will sit proudly beside the silver bowl awarded to the Best Small Village. Following the total rebuilding of the village Pinfold, a structure historically used for containing stray animals, a Judges Award was received for the conservation work. The Pinfold was rebuilt in 2019 from local magnesian limestone by dry stone walling expert Amanda James. During the judging tour, the judges were impressed by how much goes on in such a small community. They were shown the newly created Welcome to Elmton border which houses a blue plaque for Jedediah Buxton. He was the “human calculating machine” who lived in the village in the eighteenth century. The tour continued via the pub garden and community orchard looking at some of the gardens that were open for charity as part of the National Gardens scheme. The judges went on to Elmton Green and looked at the wildlife conservation area with bee orchids, quaking grass and an abundance of butterflies. The tour continued past the Pinfold to return to the Old
6
Schoolroom which had just completed a refurbishment funded by Big Local. The judges were told about the events in the village which start with Elmton Festival in June. This is always popular with visitors, who travel from all over Britain to visit Open Gardens. The festival includes three well dressings, exhibitions, a local youth brass band and of course cream teas. The festival starts with a Blessing of the Wells ceremony with singing by Whitwell community choir. Other events in the village include a community archaeology project which is currently investigating the origins and location of the mediaeval village. The final event of the year is always carol singing round the village which ends with mince pies and mulled wine in the schoolroom. These awards are a tribute to the local community, the parish, district and county councils and Chatsworth Estates who all provide support to the village.

Chesterfield Operatic Society…
More than 100 years since its sinking, RMS Titanic is being refloated by Chesterfield Operatic Society at the Pomegranate Theatre. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the “unsinkable ship” slowly sank after hitting an iceberg. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century in which 1,517 men, women and children lost their lives. Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and moving production, focusing on the hopes, dreams and
aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own. All innocently unaware of the fate awaiting them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the Second Class imagine they too can join the lifestyles of the rich and famous while the millionaire Barons of the First Class anticipate legacies lasting forever. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, the pair have collectively won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony awards. The original Broadway production of Titanic The Musical won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. Operatic society chair Sarah Morrell, who plays the role of aspiring middle-aged American Alice Beane, says the musical is full of stunning music. “While the story is one of tragedy,” she said, “the musical itself tells the story of the passengers’ hopes of a new life in America. With a cast of nearly 50, I
am sure audiences will love love this dramatic production.” Directed by Carole Copeland, with Nick Stacey as musical director and Alison Doram as choreographer, Titanic will sail from the Pomegranate from November 20 to 23, with a Saturday matinee. Early bird tickets (£16) are available through the society’s Website chesterfieldoperaticsociety.com or £17.40 when the theatre box office opens on October 31.

Your amour will give you an extravagant token of their affection. Accept it with a grateful heart; there are no strings attached to this tribute. You'll want to retreat from public view and develop an independent project on the 28th, but the tense New Moon won't allow you to do so. An annoying colleague will continually bother you for information they should already possess. It may be best to turn off your phone and hang a 'do not disturb' sign on the door. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th Home, family and real estate command your attention on the 13th. That's when a stimulating Full Moon draws your attention to domestic life. If you've been trying to wrap up the purchase or sale of property, mid-October is the time to do so. It's also possible that one of the family will leave the nest or you'll finish a home improvement job. On the 28th, the New Moon pushes you into an unfamiliar environment. You'll feel like a fish out of water in this group. Fight your instinct to flee the scene. It's much better to stay and make new friends. Certain people in this crowd will rub you the wrong way. You'll find their tastes pretentious. If you force yourself to stay on the scene, you'll find someone else who finds these attitudes equally absurd. At that point, a dreadfully boring gathering will become lots of fun.

Don't back yourself into a corner at the end of October. It's important for you to have enough free time to spend with your family; an all-consuming position isn't suited to you. PISCES February 20th March 20th Don't hesitate to ask for what is rightfully yours on the 13th, when the Full Moon sheds lights on your material needs. Demand payment for services rendered, ask for a loan to be repaid or indulge in a luxury purchase. There's nothing shallow about loving luxury and comfort. If you've been trying to improve your income, you'll have a good chance of landing a lucrative job in mid-October. Apply for a position that appeals to your sense of adventure. The New Moon on the 28th invites you to expand your horizons. The thought of earning an advanced degree is daunting; you're not sure if you can compete with students who have quick minds and sharp insights. Don't worry about the competition; seek to satisfy your own goals. Instead of taking up a subject in a practical subject, choose a course of study that is off the beaten path.

Wednesday November 13th BYRON JONES B.E.M. Wersi - The Welsh Wizard brings his musical magic to World of Music! As a child, Byron showed great promise on the piano, and then later on the organ. Whilst still at school, Byron played at the local chapel and then progressed to the working men's clubs of Wales accompanying many of the big stars in cabaret. He later progressed to the larger clubs, to play for artistes straight from the London Palladium. Since then, over the last thirty years, Byron has played for many Summer Season Spectaculars, made countless radio broadcasts, recordings and many television appearances in Great Britain and America. Wednesday December 11th MATTHEW BASON Roland Atelier Originally classically trained on the piano, by the age of 12 Matthew began to teach himself to play the organ. He became resident musician and musical director at Ashorne Hall where he played both organ and piano entertaining thousands of visitors to the Nickelodeon Collection. Matthew has now become famed for his one-man musical variety show which he performs at societies, festivals and functions throughout the UK. Tonight he performs a special concert to bring us a little Christmas Cheer! A light buffet and refreshments will be served during the interval with all the festive trimmings to add to the party atmosphere. Admission will be restricted to TICKET HOLDERS ONLY. There will undoubtedly be the usual huge demand for tickets which will be available well in advance so don’t be disappointed - get yours early!

PETS CORNER - Dangers In The Garden For Pets…
As summer ends and the autumn chill is in the air many of us are thinking about clearing out the garden from the summer, tidying and planting ready for spring. We may also be buying some house plants or flowers to cheer up the longer evenings. Do you know which plants to avoid for your canine or feline? Plants and flowers can cause mild or severe poisoning in dogs and cats depending on the type and amount consumed. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, abdominal pain, hyper salivation, fits and even coma and death. Bulbs - One of the things to be aware of is bulbs, especially daffodil, tulip and hyacinth bulbs. Dogs like to use them as balls whether they’re playing while you plat or sometimes for dogs when they dig them up after they’ve seen you plant them. Best to be careful before you site them, don’t use areas your dog can dig unattended.. Aloe vera – Great for skin and burns
but toxic to your dog and cats if eaten Amaryllis – A lovely garden ornament but also at this time of the year being given as a potted bulb. The plant leaves are toxic but in particular the bulbs themselves contain a highly concentrated toxin. Azalea/Rhododendron – Eating even a few leaves of one of these can cause severe problems for any animal included your beloved dog or cat. Carnations – Not the most poisonous but so many of us have them in the house, worth mentioning it can cause dermatitis and upsets tummies Chrysanthemum – Again not one that will cause death but if your dog or cats eats it can cause issues so best avoided. Foxgloves – The other name for foxglove is digitalis which if anyone has a relative with a heart condition is a heart medication. The plant can cause heart issues from missed beats to full blown heart failure so one to be avoided Lilies – One of the most toxic flowers to your pet which can cause severe kidney failure.
Mistletoe – Heading into festive season we may kiss under it and dress the house with it but never let the dog or cat eat it Poinsettia – Not as bad as many think but can cause mild skin, mouth and stomach irritation Rhubarb leaves – Rhubarb is great for crumble but the leaves are a big no no for your pet. Tomato plants – Not seasonal but worth mentioning as while not lethal can cause serious upset stomachs and disorientation in pets. So be careful what you let your furry friend chomp on in the garden or in the house and stay safe and well as we enter the last period of the year…..blimey where did that go? Remember if you are taking a late holiday, visiting relatives or planning Christmas Calagran Four Paws Hotel is a great place for boarding your dog or cat, or day care, so they get a holiday too. I look forward to seeing you there xx
