JUDGE JANE... Thanks to all those who wrote to me after reading my last offering. Reading your messages gave me no pleasure as they reflect the everyday struggles of ordinary people caught up in their own private hell. From the parents who have lost various parts of state support which once would have provided some respite from the extreme difficulties facing them and their terminally ill child to the retired and elderly robbed of the value of their life savings each story is a tragedy in its own right.
and the dismantling of relevant state agencies there is also a downsizing of emergency services. The disappearance of all the associated specialists and their knowledge will also mean future problems have less chance of being adequately managed. There are third world countries more able to deal with weather extremes than we are. But, I think the seminal moment for me was hearing one millionaire Minister announce “residents in affected areas are able to do more for one another than a government ever can and this should serve as a reminder that responsibility for flood management and defence must begin with the homeowner”.
The suffering of those impacted by recent unusual weather has presented members of the general public so inclined - with opportunities to spot other more far reaching consequences of austerity when combined with decades of low investment in road, rail, utilities, So there we have it. As government ministers turn their backs on the water services etc. problem - the insurance companies We are ruled by a party dominated run for the hills, the specialists are by climate change deniers and told they are a useless expense and “small government” advocates. So it the PM misrepresents small funds is no surprise to discover their in the pipeline to affected areas as disaster response strategy is at best “new” and “unlimited” amounts remain homeless, limp and at worst absent. This is thousands despite the predicted increase in vulnerable and with no prospect of similar major incidents. What few prompt support. Businesses large improvements have been made in and small go bust because banks random areas since 2007 is nothing aren’t lending and food producers compared to what is actually can only wait for the water to leave required. Of more concern is that in their flooded fields. I am unsure addition to cuts in local budgets what is worse a government

JJane revealing it is unsure how to respond to such disasters or a government pretending it’s doing something when it’s real involvement is arms length. It is the ultimate irony the most badly affected areas are those where government votes are concentrated. The fact they are currently knee deep in sewage seems like a hard way to learn how the policies they supported actually impact in real life! If you have a specific issue you wish me to include in the column please don’t hesitate to contact me at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com in the interim please ensure to use your local traders and invest in your local community.

Divorce - Holding Back The Floods The recent floods have proved extremely difficult, and to some extent hazardous, for many people. There have been the financial and emotional pressures of the loss of property and the anxiety about what the future holds. In the short term people are anxious about when the storms will end and they will be able to begin to move forward with their lives, and they are deeply anxious about whether more rain will fall before they achieve that position. In many respects this is very much akin to what happens on the breakdown of a marriage. People who are divorcing or separating face an unknown future; their assets and financial futures are in jeopardy and there is a lot of emotional fall-out and anxiety; clients wonder when they will be in a position to move forward with their lives. In some situations it is very difficult to avoid desperately clinging to the wreckage. What is often surprising is that instead of calling in the
experts to help them deal with the situation, people often resort to filling their own sandbags in a desperate attempt to hold back the flood waters. However, when the inevitable happens and the flood hits, they buy a hand pump – which ends up costing them more in damage and loss than if they had consulted the insurance company or obtained expert help much earlier on. At Graysons WE we do understand what it is like to be alone in a sea of water with no hope of rescue. If you are facing divorce, separation, or children issues for example, and you don’t know where to turn, we offer a free half hour interview so that a solicitor can assess the damage and look at all the options available to you. We offer fixed fee packages and pay as you go advice and we can assist and support you as little or as much as required. For the bits you feel you can deal with; we can point you in the right direction and in those situations where you feel the flood water is rising too fast; we can come to your rescue and offer you more support and assistance.
separation, a lot of damage has already been done. Early intervention is always the best option. We cannot promise to hold back the flood waters but we can ensure you salvage something from the wreckage in as cost effective and expedient a manner as possible. Our client feedback is second to none and many of the comments we receive relate to how clients feel when they have handed their situation over to an expert – when they had been floundering.
Unfortunately, by the time we see people about their divorce or

Becky’s Movie Previews This month is definitely the time of year for everyone to be in the mood for the movies as the biggest event of the film season happens this Sunday evening, The Oscars. So to get you in the mood, here’s what will be gracing your cinema’s this month.
Coming Soon…
Paranoia The film follows low-level worker Adam ( ) who is employed by a big corporation run by Nicolas Wyatt ( ). All Adam wants to do is earn enough money to take care of his father who worked all his life and got nothing to show for it, although this wish takes him into unknown
territory that could lead him into danger. He is approached by Wyatt and blackmails him into becoming a corporate spy. He is sent to infiltrate a company run by Wyatt’s former mentor Jock Goddard ( ) and gives him new ground-breaking software to earn trust and eventually learn of upcoming projects he can feed back to Wyatt. With lots of double crosses and turncoats you’ll need to pay attention to try and figure out who works for whom. A crime thriller that keeps the attention high and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.
Labor Day
Although it missed out on any Oscar nominations, probably because of the release date cut off, this suspense drama could still be worth a watch. This story follows the lives of depressed single mother Adele ) and her 13 year old ( son Henry. While out shopping one day, Henry is approached by a ) who is mysterious man ( bleeding and makes Adele and Henry take him home to take care of his wounds. They soon learn he is Frank Chambers, an escaped convict who is being hunted by the police. Through flashbacks we learn Frank was sent to jail for the murder of his girlfriend.
As the days go on Frank and Adele grow closer and they soon fall in love. They decide to pack up and all 3 of them will move to Canada to start a new life. As preparations begin on Labor Day, a series of events follow and it is unsure what will become of the newly formed family as the authorities start to close in. Not the usual kidnapping drama but the fact there is romance involved doesn’t force the story anywhere it doesn’t want to go. A romance with a twist.

So with the help of The Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff ( ) they attempt to uncover the mass machine that’s behind everything that’s happening. All while fending off hired hit men.
Veronica Mars One for television fans now, Veronica Mars was a popular series which ran from 2004 to 2007 and made many headlines when a campaign through the website Kickstarter meant that the creators were finally able to make a film version. The series was focused on the life of Veronica, a teenage private investigator who worked for her father solving crimes from dog knapping to murder. Kristen Bell starred as the heroine and has since starred in many films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Burlesque. She even leant her voice and singing talent to the recently successful Disney film Frozen. Along with millions of fans, she has been championing for years for a movie version and now the will has become a reality. After moving away from

California and leaving her PI days behind her to become a high-flying New York lawyer, Veronica is called back to her home town by her ex-boyfriend Logan after he is accused of murder. He asks for Veronica’s help and she reluctantly agrees and is soon swept back into her old life, helped by a high school reunion to help the transition along. Can Veronica help prove the innocence of her old flame and also keep hold of the life she created in New York? With the amount of support this film received before it even got made I’m sure fans won’t be disappointed.
They soon discover the entire scheme but must now face an unanticipated and powerful adversary, the Winter Soldier ( . The soldiers’ identity is unknown but when he becomes know to Captain America, it’s a surprise he wasn’t expecting.

Derbyshire’s Unsung Heroes…
During the Second World War many brave airmen were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), some won it twice and a few even won it three times. One of these was Norman Crooks, from Tupton, who was also awarded the American DFC! Norman was a radar operator on night fighters and was responsible for shooting down eleven German bombers, four of them in half an hour one night in June 1944. After the war he trained as a history teacher and eventually became headmaster of William Rhodes School (now Parkside) in Chesterfield. Joan Spicer, now living in Chesterfield, was one of thousands of women who went into the factories to replace the men who had been called up. She helped to build
Spitfires at the Vickers Armstrongs factory in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, and was one of a team of eight girls, all aged 18. They formed a close friendship which kept them cheerful during the long working days, and during their free time they went out dancing together. Fifty years later they had a reunion, and the local press ran a story about the ‘Spitfire Girls’ who had stayed friends for so many years. These and many other stories form the content of 'Derbyshire's Unsung Heroes' by Chesterfield author Malcolm Cowper. The idea came to him one day when, skimming through the obituary columns of his local paper his eye was drawn to phrases such as 'Served in the Royal Navy during the war' or 'Wartime Service in the Women's Land Army', and he sensed that behind these terse statements there must be many untold stories of life between 1939 and 1945, and that time was running out to capture these memories. So he wrote to all the Derbyshire local papers asking anyone with wartime memories to contact him.
The response was extraordinary, and over the next few weeks his phone hardly stopped ringing as more and more people from all over the county said they had a story to tell. In all, he interviewed some 40 war veterans, some of whom had served in the armed forces, while others (mainly women) had worked in the factories or on the land, or were children at the time, with memories of air raids and gas masks, The stories capture the comradeship, the humour and the sense of duty that carried them through fear, loss and sacrifice. Very few received any medals, or even official recognition, but all bravely, uncomplainingly and often at great personal suffering, went about the task of winning the war. Hence the title 'Derbyshire's Unsung Heroes'. Priced at £9.50, the book is available from Amazon, from Waterstones and Spire Books in Chesterfield, and from Bannister Publications on Saltergate, Chesterfield (www.bannisterpublications.com)

March Gardening This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing as light levels and temperatures increase. There's plenty to do indoors this month, in preparation for the season ahead, sowing early vegetables and preparing propagators ready to sow seed of bedding plants. Its time to tidy up shrubs, removing any parts that are dead, diseased or decayed, don't prune if the plant or shrub flowers before June as you will remove flowering shoots and buds. Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Seed potatoes are now available and if you prefer to chit ( encourage small shoots prior to planting )then now is the time. Planting onion sets in cell trays or small trays is also a good idea so that when planted in their beds they will be well rooted and the birds will not disturb them. When the weather allows,
carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating. Continue to plant your veg and flower gardens making sure you position the tallest where they will not shade out others. Plant bare-rooted shrubs and trees and container-grown climbers. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, February is the ideal month for planting as the soil will soon be warming up, encouraging new roots to grow and helping the plant to become established. Prune Roses by taking out all dead, weak and crossing stems. Cut hybrid tea roses back to about 8” to an outward facing bud and cut floribundas (those with flowers in clusters) down to 10 to 12 inches. Hellebores or Lenten roses in their many various colours will be opening from now on well into the spring. Trim off their old leaves, both to display the flowers better and to prevent the spread of
disease. Fresh new leaves will emerge in the spring. Hostas - although there is no sign of these above ground yet it is not too early by the middle of the month to protect them from slugs whatever method you choose ensure that no other animals can be affected. Do this again each fortnight and your hostas will have their best ever chance of not being devoured by their worst enemies. We have a large selection of all seasonal plants and shrubs available and can source most plants if requested. Visit us at Doncaster road langold S819QL or give me a call on 07979377570 always happy to help. Johnsplants.com

Yarn Bombing at Clumber Park We were there on Sunday 16 February 2014 busy decorating the apple trees in the Kitchen Garden with pieces knitted and crocheted by Whitwell and District WI members, friends and family. Ours were just some of the pieces donated from all over the country and in fact the world!
It was a great afternoon – the sun was shining for once – and we met many interesting people – some of them with very puzzled looks until we explained what we were doing. Staff and volunteers from Clumber were enthusiastic, friendly and helpful.
Go along and see the results of all our efforts on Sunday 2 March 2014 at the Spring Wassailing Event in the Kitchen Garden at Clumber Park. Take a sneak preview on their Facebook page to check out our photos.
