JUDGE JANE... The fate of Royal Mail is sealed and thousands of British citizens like me are preparing to experience rocketing prices, fewer products and in some cases the total loss of their delivery service over the next few years. This of course is all about bringing “us” good value. I’m not cheering or rushing out to buy shares because that’s not going to be the case. I don’t have a crystal ball, psychic powers or inside information to rely on for this statement. I just look at the outcome for all the other vital public services sold off to public ownership and see what happened to them, their employees and service users and I’m bracing myself in anticipation of more of same. Imagine for one moment “we” the general public – the taxpayers who own this business had been properly consulted on this plan. How would you or I feel about having less than 6 deliveries weekly, being forced to rent a PO Box if we live in a rural area, tower block or other potentially problematic residential situation and/or paying double or treble what we now pay to send or receive letters? Depending on who you are and how you live your life this “value for money” option could be really bad news for you. 96 % of people employed by Royal Mail are against the sale. They are ordinary people like us who have an insider’s view of the business. Their voting behaviour should be a warning to us of what is to come because that figure represents people at all levels in

the business – not just our posties. They aren’t voting against the sale because they fear being able to deliver a better, good value service working with new equipment from nicer premises. They are voting against the notion that any private company is able to balance the needs of staff and customers with the demand for high profits by shareholders and other investors. The logic for these concerns is obvious. A publicly owned business is not at the mercy of the financial markets which are just posh betting shops after all. It does not have to take into consideration the concerns of investors or the fact they may abandon the business if they consider it unprofitable at some point plunging it into crisis for reasons not associated with its daily function. The promises made by politicians before the sale of the various public transport services, utilities and parts of the health service have failed to emerge. These “new” organisations have not delivered “good value” or “real choice” to the majority of consumers and most now rely on a combination of public subsidy, low wages and minimal service options to retain their investors. Does the Royal Mail – or whatever it will be called in the future - have some radical new plan for avoiding the same commercial challenges which face all businesses? I suspect not but, I would be delighted to be proved wrong. On that note and always keen to look on the bright side I notice some people are benefiting from all this chaos. Each day there is a

JJane new consumer program with stories of ordinary people being overcharged, left without services and or fleeced out of their savings by dodgy traders. Or, there are the stories about those made homeless, ill or worse as a consequence of misunderstanding complicated small print problems associated with overly complex offers dreamed up by faceless, unaccountable marketing people. If that’s not bad enough most of these companies are now owned by obscure, mysterious overseas investment organisations which just want to be able to dabble with the share markets using the assets of that particular organisation. Unfortunately journalists on cheap telly or talk radio won’t dig down to reveal the real source of the problems these stories actually represent. Citizen journalism is probably the way forward so get writing. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/ private services you can email me with them at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com

It’s just my opinion!

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe… She had no pension so there was nothing else she could do…..

Pension can be one of the biggest assets in a marriage – but it is often overlooked, as it is not an immediately realisable asset. When divorcing, most people concentrate on those assets that have an instant value: the house, the shares and even the car take priority. However, divorcees may well rue the day they made that decision; when they reach pensionable age and are sat in the local park whilst their ex is enjoying the sun in St Tropez! Calculating the true value of a pension can be complex; much may depend on the type of pension scheme it is part of. Pensions with a high street provider, company pensions and pensions with organisations like the NHS or Army may all have a paper value (usually called a transfer value) that look the same, but in fact the true actuarial value of those pensions, and therefore

the income each will provide, will be vastly different. Valuing a pension is one thing; working out how to distribute it is another. There are generally three ways in which a pension can be shared. These are: Offsetting is where one party keeps their pension and the other party receives a greater share of something else such as the family home. This can be a difficult calculation. For example; if someone has a pension with a value of £100,000 and the other a property with a value of £100,000, it would be unusual to treat them as the same value for offsetting purposes. This is because one can be 'used' immediately, whereas the other cannot be accessed until pensionable age is reached, and then only part can be taken as a lump sum the rest must be taken as income. A pension attachment is an arrangement where, when the pension finally does pay out, part of it is 'earmarked' for the other party. This means both parties have to wait until the one with the pension retires, and there is a risk there may be little or nothing to take if he or she dies before the pension is taken. Pension sharing is where part of one party’s pension is actually taken out of their pension fund and transferred into a pension in the other party’s name. This cuts down on the risk within a pension attachment order because, as the pension is in the

Michelle Cooper, partner and head of family department at Graysons WE

Michelle Cooper spouse’s own name, they can draw it when they retire without having to wait for the other party to retire, and it does not matter what happens to the other party. However, care must be taken to make sure the pension is valued properly and the split is a fair one. So, if you want to avoid living in a shoe, and are looking for the most effective divorce settlement for your own situation, get expert family legal advice now from one of the largest, award winning family law teams in the region. Call 01246 511695 or email divorce-enquiries@graysons.co.uk to arrange a confidential meeting. www.graysons.co.uk.

Becky’s Movie Previews The cold nights are drawing in fast and the winter clothes are taken out of storage so what better way to keep off the chill than a trip to the cinema. Let’s see what October has in store for us.

Coming Soon…

Turbo

one for kids and adults alike as DreamWorks has a new animation for us. The film follows the tale of Theo, a.k.a. Turbo, an ordinary garden snail who dreams of being the greatest racer in the world. Although, his obsession with everything fast makes him an outsider in his own community and a constant embarrassment to his older brother, Chet.

Then on one fateful night, during a freak accident, Theo is sucked into the supercharger of a drag racer and his DNA is fused with nitrous oxide. He awakes to find he has the power of incredible speed and accuracy. He even takes on some traits of a car itself including the alarm and his eyes becoming flashing headlights. And so begins Theo’s quest for fame, notoriety and to finally achieve what he’s always dreamed of. There’s an impressive voice cast as well that includes Ryan Reynolds as Turbo (The Green Lantern, The Proposal, Buried), Paul Giamatti as older brother Chet (Sideways, The Hangover Part 2), Samuel L. Jackson and Snoop Dogg. Release date: 18.10.13 Assange and the World’s Most Everyone heard about WikiLeaks when it started hitting Dangerous Website.” The film stars Benedict the headlines from 2006. A Nightmare on Elm Street As with Valentine’s Day, we’re getting a re-release of a film which lends itself to the occasion. As its Halloween we’re being treated to the original A Nightmare on Elm Street for one night only. The classic horror was first released in 1984 and was written and directed by horror legend Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes, Scream Quadrilogy, and The Last House on the Left). It starred a fresh faced Johnny Depp and Robert Englund as the superb horror villain, Freddie Krueger. For those not familiar with the film, the story surrounds the dreams of teenagers and what happens in their dreams, really happens to them. In their dreams they are being stalked by a man with a burnt face and knives on his fingers. As more and more are dying in their sleep the

mystery as to why he’s after them soon becomes clear when the kids parents reveal a secret of their own. Although times have changed a lot since the 80’s, in horror and effects especially, this still brings chills to the spine. A classic and a must see for a night at the cinema on Halloween. Release date: 31.10.13 (one night only)

This story is based on the 2004 novel by Meg Rosoff about an American girl called Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) who is sent on holiday for the summer to the English countryside to stay with her cousins. All seems to be going well as she starts to enjoy the company of her family and then she meets and falls in love with Eddie (George Mackay). Daisy thinks she’s having the time of her life until they find themselves going into hiding and having to fight for survival as World War 3 breaks out which includes a nuclear attack. When Daisy and Eddie are separated it’s a journey of not only survival but for them to find each other again. Although still only 19 years old, Ronan has had her fair share of big roles including Atonement

alongside Keira Knightley, The Lovely Bones with Mark Wahlberg and Hanna starring opposite Eric Bana. Not too shabby. The film is also directed by BAFTA winning director of The Last King of Scotland Kevin Macdonald. And with the events that are currently in the news, this film couldn’t be more on point for what could happen in the future. Release date: 04.10.13

October Gardening Now is the time to finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi and crocuses - tulips can wait until November. Choose plump firm bulbs and plant in a location with good drainage. Add grit if the soil is heavy and ensure your pots and containers have plenty of good drainage. Bury bulbs at three times their own depth, tip upwards and make sure there are no air pockets around the bulbs. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land. Some great varieties to narcissi to Grow include scented varieties Sir Winston Churchill, Repete, early cheer, bridal crown and Tete a Tete is a good all round dwarf type, all these are suitable for either pots or the garden. Eye catching tulips include Abu Hassan, China pink, Happy generation and spring green.

Plant new shrubs and perennials - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant them so their roots have a chance to become established before winter. Divide herbaceous perennials such as daylilies , geraniums and rhubarb, Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of compost and water generously. Cut back perennials that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage. Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers borders and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; mini cyclamen (these will only tolerate light frosts) heathers, dwarf conifers, variegated box, pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make good displays, bare rooted wallflowers are now available and add great winter colour to borders, two good varieties are Persian carpet and Tom Thumb (a dwarf variety). Move any tender plants under

cover before the cold sets in (if possible allow them to dry out partially before lifting them). If you want one of the true hardy cyclamen this is hederifolium and comes in a variety of colours and will naturalise into large drifts. It's important to lift containers that will be left outside off the ground to ensure good drainage and to protect against frost damage. This month is probably the best time to plant new shrubs trees and hedging either pot grown or bare rooted before the harsh frosts arrive, remember to water in well and support taller Specimens. If you want to move shrubs and small trees take as much root ball as possible, handle carefully and incorporate compost in the new hole, also mulch around the surface to retain moisture. As the daylight shortens sit back and relax and start to plan your garden planting scheme for next year. If you require any further information or quality plants and shrubs either visit us at our plant centre in Langold S819QL, or contact me at john@ johnsplants.com.

CHESTERFIELD - Bucking the Trend! New report shows Chesterfield bucks north south divide on shop vacancy rates! Destination Chesterfield has welcomed news that the town has maintained its top 10 position in The Local Data Company’s latest report on shop vacancy rates. It is one of only three towns north of the ‘Watford Gap’ that are listed in the report’s top 25 best performing centres with the least vacant shops. The report, which analyses over 1,900 town centres, shopping centres and retail parks visited in the first

half of 2013, ranks Chesterfield 8th in the large centres category. Figures also show that Chesterfield’s shop vacancy rate has fallen from 8.7% in 2012 to 7.7% in 2013, placing it above the large affluent tourist town of Windsor (9.1%) in the south. The average vacancy rate of towns in the large centres category currently stands at 13.5%. Further welcome news includes the fact that the East Midlands has shown the greatest improvement at -0.4%. Matthew Hopkinson, director at the Local Data Company commented: “Chesterfield is performing well as a town with the vacancy rate nearly halving to 7.7% since its peak in 2010." Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “The report is hugely encouraging, confirming our belief that Chesterfield’s retail sector is expanding rapidly. In the last two years many major high street names, including Debenhams and TK Maxx, have chosen to invest in Chesterfield further strengthening our retail offer. The

town’s mix of independent and high street retailers and excellent location, coupled with good transport links and the growing property market, ensure footfall from local shoppers and those outside the area, helping make the town a go-to destination.” George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, added: “Chesterfield has got it right in terms of its overall retail mix, which means it can offer something to every type of shopper. It has a popular market and some interesting and unique independent shops and boutique stores, as well as some big name national retail brands which help drive footfall into the town centre. “Further developments due to come on stream later this year and beyond will help Chesterfield to continue to buck the national trend and attract even more investment into the local retail sector.” In recent years Chesterfield has invested heavily in the town’s retail offering, helping it attract inward investment from large high street names as well as fledgling businesses. Its historic Market Hall is undergoing a £4 million redevelopment. Opening in October, the market hall will provide 45 internal and external retail units, 22 offices, a central café/coffee shop and conference facilities. In November 2013 the town will welcome Hobbycraft and Asda Living. In October 2011 Debenhams opened a full range department store in the town with Rob Hadfield, Head of Property at Debenhams commenting: "We have long felt Chesterfield is an exciting destination for a potential Debenhams store.” Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high

streets with unemployment decreasing by 0.5% during this time. Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “We could have chosen to bunker down and ride out the recession, but we didn’t. We chose to forge ahead with our marketing plans and this shows in the recent retail figures. “The results also demonstrate that the pro-active work we are doing with the town’s businesses is paying dividends. I’m pleased with the progress we have made but I believe there is more to come if we continue to work hard on delivering the right climate for business growth.” The investment in Chesterfield as well as its buoyant housing market is a key attraction to retailers choosing to invest in the town, as it has increased local footfall as well as providing a ready pool of employees. Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.

ICONS

Quentin Tarantino When American film director, Quentin Tarantino, burst on to the international scene in 1992, with hi stylized gangster movie Reservoir Dogs, he became an overnight sensation. His movies have since been much imitated and are characterised by imaginative, bizarre plot lines, intense bursts of violence and witty dialogue. Born Tennessee, Tarantino grew up in California. Where his early love of film led him to drop out of school to work in a video store. He worked alongside fellow film buff, Roger Avary, who later became his collaborator, sharing the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Pulp Fiction. While dispensing his movie knowledge to customers by day, Tarantino spent his spare time working on the screenplays that would eventually become True Romance and Natural Born Killers. He also managed to gain a bit part in the sitcom The Golden Girls and forged the connections necessary to get his scripts into the hands of influential film producers. His debut movie Reservoir Dogs was a low-budget, independent production, that received little attention in the US, but was immediately popular in Britain, where it won critical praise and sky-high box office receipts. Shown at the Sundance Film Festival, it suddenly caught the critics’ attention and the spotlight turned to the director. Vilified for the films violence and bad language, Tarantino was unapologetic stating that he wanted to provoke a reaction from his audiences. Tarantino gained recognition from Hollywood with the release of his second

movie, Pulp Fiction, in 1994. The film, starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, was notable for its violence and bad language, diluted by mordant black humour and a complex non linear plot. Following this success, True Romance, with a screenplay by Tarantino, was released in 1993. A romantic crime film, it was not directed by Tarantino, but once again, audiences were dazzled by its pop culture references, sharp burst of violence and innovative plot twists. Tarantino continued to court controversy with Jackie Brown (1997), his homage to the ‘blaxploitation’ movies of the 1970’s (which had targeted urban black audiences). Similarly, the two-part action thriller Kill Bill (2003 and 2004), his take on martial arts and revenge movies, also polarized the critics. Inglorious Basterds (2009) tackled the war movie genre with Tarantino’s customary originality and earned eight Academy Awards Nominations. Aside from his startlingly creative screenplays, Tarantino specialises in reviving the careers ‘resting’ stars - such as John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Pam Grier in Jackie Brown and David Carradine in Kill Bill. This adds another dimension to his movies, as audiences are astounded and usually delighted to see old stars reappearing on the screen in surprising roles. Rather like Alfred Hitchcock, Tarantino appears in cameo roles in several of his movies, but it is for his ground-breaking work behind the camera that he stands out. Born: Quentin Jerome Tarantino March 27, 1963 Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Icons 2010
