Signs of Local Housing Recovery.. Paul Walters, associate director at Miller Homes East Midlands which is developing two, three and four bedroom houses at The Portlands, the site of the former Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club, said: “Since opening the sales centre we have had a phenomenal level of interest in the new development, reflecting the increasing buoyancy in the market.”

Britain’s housing recovery evident in the East Midlands Chesterfield is ‘top of the wish list’ for many buyers Signs of the UK housing market’s "meaningful recovery" are evident in the East Midlands town of Chesterfield according to Destination Chesterfield. Developer Miller Homes East Midlands has described Chesterfield as being “at the top of the wish list for many couples, families and individuals looking to buy.” Miller Homes is one of a number of developers currently building more than 200 new in the borough, with more planned on a 1.94 hectare site of a former school.

Miller Homes is averaging one sale a week at The Portlands, with all properties having been purchased off plan ahead of the showhomes being opened.

In addition to new build, estate agents in the town are also reporting an increase in sales and instructions with a new agency opening in the town less than eight months ago to meet demand.

To further reinvigorate the local housing market, Chesterfield Borough Council recently put in place a Local Authority Mortgage Support Scheme to help first time buyers in Chesterfield get their foot on the property ladder.

Redbrik, which opened in Chesterfield in January 2013, reports a buoyant housing market, with as many as ‘three or four potential buyers making offers’ on some properties in the west side of town. Mark Ross, partner of Redbrik, said: “We are experiencing higher confidence levels in the market right now, with greater numbers of viewings and an increase in mortgage approvals contributing to a great start for Redbrik and helping us achieve over 100 instructions in half the time we expected.”

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “We are currently seeing significant investment in housing. Chesterfield is on the up and we have made significant investment to attract people to the borough. The town offers good transport links and a friendly, safe environment which is popular with families, many of which choose to locate here thanks to our variety and wealth of affordable housing, good schools and opportunity.

Mark reports an increase in house prices across the board in Chesterfield, with properties in key school catchment areas being up as much as 5% compared to last year.

September 2013

The variety and affordability of housing in Chesterfield has been a contributory factor in attracting a number of investors and employers, including Debenhams and TK Maxx in the town centre and Ready Egg, Squadron Medical and Andrew Page Limited at its 200 acre commercial park, on the M1, Markham Vale. Earlier this year *research by the National Housing Federation found that 73% of East Midlands employers agree that

building more homes would stimulate the local economy and bring in more business and customers. The buoyant housing market has resulted in a great pool of talent for all types of business, from world leading specialist manufacturers and multi-national communications companies to retailers and distributors. Keen to support residents, investors and local business, the council has put in place a Local Plan which identifies the number of new homes it will need over the next 20 years. John Burrows added: “The current new build developments will go a long way to provide the homes we need for the people we expect to see living and working here, supporting business who choose to invest here by providing a ready pool of employees.” John Burrows, added: “We could have chosen to bunker down and ride out the recession, but we didn’t. We chose to be proactive and forge ahead with our marketing plans and this shows in the recent employment, tourism and retail figures.” Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high streets with unemployment decreasing by 0.5% during this time. Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.

There is great value Academy in our Night Launched... Time Economy Student Retail As a small business owner for over 25 years in Chesterfield, as well as a member of the Federation of Small Business, I feel positive about our town’s future. The housing market is picking up and our town centre is surviving these difficult times. Best of all though, the sun has been shining, giving us the opportunity to see just how well managed and pretty our town is. It is not only the market stall holders that benefit from the warmer weather, it is also a great opportunity for the town’s night time economy as more people venture out to socialise, whether it’s for a drink, a meal, a show or clubbing. Unfortunately this is against the backdrop of frequent national headlines warning of the British Binge Drinking Culture’, a town’s evening economy can be under appreciated, even feared. However, did you know that our town is one of the safest in the UK to socialise in? This is because here in Chesterfield the responsible bar and club owners, as part of their licensing objectives, work closely with the authorities to ensure that we have a vibrant and safe night time economy. Often problems stem from outside forces, such as cheaply sold alcohol leading to ‘pre-loading’. This is an official term which refers to consuming

substantial quantities of alcohol in an unregulated environment. Recent information suggests that this could be a contributing factor to an increase of incidents in alcohol related crime in the suburbs and the wider community. Any negative perception of night time socialising within our town centre should be seen as historical, we must not let any misconceptions overshadow the significant contribution our well managed and properly regulated night-time economy makes to Chesterfield town centre. Chesterfield’s privately run bars, restaurants and clubs employ hundreds of local people. These businesses also invest millions of pounds in the development and maintenance of quality, safe venues in Chesterfield. In turn, they support many businesses and services in the local economy such as public transport, taxi companies, clothes shops and hair and beauty salons and many other small local retail businesses. Add this to the list of local plumbers, builders and electricians we all use and you have a complex system of cross-trade synergy. This symbiotic relationship then allows the profit generated by these small businesses to be pumped back into the local

25 new Ambassadors all set for Chesterfield Chesterfield has recruited 25 more willing volunteers to sing the praises of the town, bringing the total of ‘ambassadors’ to 125. The volunteers join the town’s Ambassador Scheme ahead of the influx of tourists over the summer. The new ambassadors include frontline staff from the town’s businesses, including restaurants, museums, banks and Chesterfield Borough council employees. They join local residents, traffic wardens and sales assistants to name but a few, who have previously signed up to the voluntary, unpaid scheme. Chesterfield Ambassadors is the brainchild of the town’s marketing campaign Destination Chesterfield, and is designed to ensure that all visitors to

the town have a great time here and leave with a positive impression. Dominic Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager explained: “We have marketed Chesterfield a as place to live, work and invest in during the last two years. Many businesses and people have chosen to locate here and this, coupled with an 11% increase in tourism, ensures that our Ambassadors play a vital role in helping market the town positively. The Ambassadors Scheme is about ensuring all visitors – whether tourists or here on business - leave with a positive opinion of Chesterfield and are excited, like we are, of our plans for the future.” The latest ambassadors recently

underwent training to ensure they were all equipped with the latest news, facts and figures about the town – from how many tiles are on the iconic church spire to information about the town’s regeneration plans alongside the importance of good customer service. Ambassadors then receive regular updates about the town on events, developments and local news. The two-hour training workshop took place at the Town Hall and was developed with Chesterfield Champion, Evolution Training. If you’re interested in becoming an ambassador, visit www.chesterfield.co.uk to find out more.

ICONS

The Beatles Perhaps the most famous, commercially successful and critically acclaimed British rock band ever, The Beatles redirected the history of western popular culture and music. The style was rooted in skiffle and rock, but developed into an innovative, sophisticated and genre-busting musical idiom as the group’s songwriting skills, range and musical intelligence grew. Singles hit included She Loves You, Can’t Buy Me Love, and A Hard Day’s Night, but The Beatles’ legacy was assured by a sequence of revolutionary albums. In their early days as a gifted, wisecracking rock-and-roll group, The Beatles revolutionized the sound and style of British popular music with their original and catchy synthesis of rock music, rhythm and blues. They first appeared in the clubs of Liverpool - their home city - and Hamburg. On the way, they lost two early band members - bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer, Pete Best. They acquired drummer, Ringo Starr, in 1962 to make up the Fab Four of fame and fable. Molded by manager Brian Epstein from 1962, they adopted their signature mop-head haircuts and collarless suit jackets and were signed to the EMI Parlophone lable by prescient music producer, George Martin. Thie debut album Please Please Me, recorded in a single session at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, became their first No. 1 hit. In total, 11 studio albums and 17 singles went on to reach the top spot in the British charts - an astonishing record. Beatlemania went global, when the band toured the USA in spring 1964 and they entered the movie world with their mock-documentary A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and its successors

Help! (1965) and A Magical Mystery Tour (1967). A succession of landmark albums followed. Rubber Soul (1965) featured elements drawn from the contemporary US folk scene and went and from world music, notably in its use of the sitar, while Revolver (1966) further extended their range, from classical to psychedelic rock. The phenomenal concept album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) is regularly listed as one of the greatest albums of all time. A creative period of transcendental meditation at a retreat in India led to The White Album (1968, formally called The Beatles). However, it also increased personal tensions within the group, which became focused on John Lennon’s relationship with the artist, Yoko Ono. Two further acclaimed albums followed, Abbey Road (1969) and Let It Be (1970), but in April 1970, Paul McCartney announced he was quitting the band and he filed for formal dissolution at the end of the year. All four members went on to make solo albums and McCartney developed a hugely successful post-Beatles career. In the years that followed the band’s dissolution, two tragic events happened. Lennon was killed in 1980 in New York City and George Harrison Died of cancer in 2001. Founded January 1960 Disbanded 1970 Members: George Harrision 1943-2001 John Lennon 1940-1980 Paul McCartney 1942-Present Ringo Starr (born Richard Starkey) 1940-Present
