HELLOOO…… mid week on a destination, similarly, our Weds evening rides will continue on a weather permitting basis as usual - if the weather looks agreeable we will let you all know via the usual channels. On a very positive note for the club Both rides are attracting more and more interest and we have gained some fantastic new members again over the last few months. Hi All And welcome to our October newsletter.

2

The end of August to October has certainly been slightly more clement than the early part of August although we have on a number of Sunday’s in particular dodged the rain and been caught a few times! We have taken a ride out on the majority of Sunday’s missing the last two due to rain rain rain and hope to continue with this going forward - we will decide

So if you haven’t joined us yet pop along for a friendly fun ride out. Look out for our regular updates re ride outs on our Facebook pages, the website and our messenger ‘ride outs’ group (not a member let me know and I will add you) these give you up to date info on what's coming up each week. Membership is growing steadily and I look forward to meeting our newer members and riding with you throughout the rest of the year (or next season if your bike is in bed) - so a huge welcome and if I haven’t met you yet I look forward to doing so in the near future and hope that you will interact with me by sending anything you think might be of interest to your fellow members - be it places you have visited (pictures essential please), kit or gadgets you think are great or particularly useful, a test ride you may have taken and in fact anything bike related really! It’s doubtful Rich and I will manage to make all the socials and ride outs (we still have youngish boys at home) so essential that you all take great pics and send me

updates so that I can pass on to all our members. I hope you enjoy our October offering - Great coverage of our ride outs and trips since August, the usual words of wisdom and info from our Director, his take on our Norfolk Weekend, a recommendation from our Assistant Director Simon and Jon Beal, fab coverage of the LOH Sparkle Tour from Sandy, a few other interesting items that have slipped my mind and a few adverts from members. If you run a business and would like to include yourself in our advertising section please drop me a line with copy or details and I will be happy to design something appropriate and would ask only a small one off donation to Chapter funds of £10 for the year (minimum four issues). And finally… and I do repeat myself regularly lol, I am by no means a petrol head but do love my bikes and am extremely passionate about riding and the whole ethos of the Harley Owners Group - do please say hello and introduce yourselves to us if we pass at Harleyworld or Matlock etc and if you haven’t done so already send me a pic of yourself, your partner/pillion if you have one and your ride so that we can all see who’s who. The

DIRECTOR’s cut…… friendly we all are. Well done us!! Everyone should be in the chapter to enjoy themselves, get the most out of riding our magnificent machines, socialise and make new friends. That's how it should be in my eyes and I will fight for it to stay that way for as long as I am Director.

CHROMIES!!!!! Well, what a time of it we have been having. I am pleased to report that the name change has been taken very well by virtually everyone, including other chapters. It is rather weird that the one definite opponent went to social media to berate us for doing the name change. Turns out they left Peak Riders a few years back and are not even HOG members anymore, but still felt the need to vent. It takes all sorts. I really have no issue with people being honest with me. I would rather have that, than have the situation where things are being said about people behind their backs! I detest back biting with a vengeance. If your not happy to say it to the face of the person involved then don't say it at all. I do my best to get on with everyone and I think I do a pretty good job of it. That doesn't mean that I agree with everything that is said or done within the chapter. My role is to manage, not rule. I cannot say that I like everyone the same. I will say that I want the chapter to continue with the current ethos of being the friendliest chapter in the UK. It is working and the new members regularly comment on how

holding one of these positions is entitled to step down at any time. I am happy to say that no current officer has approached me to say they wish to stand down but they have the option to do so whenever they wish. So, I would like to ask for anyone who would like to be considered for any of the office positions to please let me know. I will not ask anyone to step down, but I do need to know if anyone is out there willing to step up, if the position becomes available. This does not include Road Captains. We are trying to keep a few new Road Captains coming along each year. Without them the team would be very stretched and riding is the main stay of any HOG chapter. We have two people taking the course next year and if you think you might be interested please let one of the current RC's know. They will have to assess you on a ride out before putting your name forward. We need to be sure you are capable of handling the role before sending of to be transformed (o'er). Don't be shy. You don't have to be a master rider, just competent, safe and considerate to the needs of others within the ride. Ask any RC (Rich is the Lead Road Captain) and they will happily tell you all about it.

It is getting more and more difficult for me to spend time with everyone. As we grow, there are more and more of us, which is great but that also means we must take our eye off the bedrock of our membership. Those that we owe a debt of gratitude to. Those that were here through the good and bad times of Peak Riders and have, thankfully, decided to stay with us as we develop our new group. I owe you all a drink because without you there would be no chapter for us to work with. You know who you are and I promise to try to spend more time chatting with you when I can and I will encourage all members to talk to these people. Their knowledge and experience is second to none. Please feel free to put some of your Harley stories over to Paula. You may have wrote about them in the past but most of us have not heard or read them. I am sure Paula would love to have more articles to include in these That's about enough from me for newsletters. this issue. We are hoping to get a The AGM is fast approaching. This end of year edition out, probably is the time of year when some of just before the AGM, that will tell us think about putting the faithful you a little more about our plans HD into hibernation and getting for next year. Please do your best the hot chocolate out of an to come to the AGM. The more the evening. Others just put on an merrier (raffle prizes as well and extra t-shirt (sleeves optional - maybe cake if we ask nicely). Simon) and carry on. Either way, we need to ask ALL members if Hope to see you all soon they would like to take a more active part in our chapter. CHROME HILL ‘CHAPTER FLAG’ DOES SCOTLAND Chrome Hill has, like all other HOG Chapters, a Chapter flag. Ours is quite young, and this is the story of a big trip to Scotland. Before this trip many photographs had already been taken with the Chapter on ride outs and trips, but this was to be a little special. Hi. I am the Chrome Hill Chapter Flag, and in the middle of August I was packed up by the Director of my Chapter, Derek and his wife, the Activities Officer, Viv and we set off on a big adventure, to Scotland. I really had no idea how long it would take to get there, and the adventures and sights but I had heard talk of a HOG rally ‘Thunder in the Glens’ (TITG) so I was quite excited. Arriving at the rally, Derek and Viv, got themselves and our chariot registered and off we all went exploring. My first picture was at the main entrance to the rally, a very busy event, and lots of others bikers, and other chapter flags; what would this adventure bring along next. Derek and Viv went off shopping, and goodness me how much there was to see. At the rally site at the main hotel complex there was a huge array of stalls, with everything to buy from t-shirts, cleaning stuffs and leather goods, and some great bargains to be had. There was wood carving with chainsaws, and the strange sight of men in kilts – some even playing a strange instrument I learnt later is called bagpipes; After a little exploring we set off to find food and join the rest of the rally, before Derek and Viv met with Phil and Sandy who were also there. I was handed over to Phil and Sandy who had agreed to take over the

adventure. They packed me up and headed to back to their lodge which was shared by several other biker friends, and

Chapter – Karen and Steve from Deva Legion at the hotel, and later passed them going opposite directions on a ride. Lots of waving and they all stopped for a photo. The first day ride while staying at TITG was with the housemates

talk was of the previous two days when they had taken the long way to Aviemore staying at Moffatt, and doing some fabulous riding before they arrived at TITG. During their time in Moffatt they did a day ride, and took in the sites in the Scottish Lowlands including the highest village in the area, Wanlockhead. They also met, unexpectedly, some HOG friends from another

taking the long, and rather gravelly road around Loch Ness. Great riding, a little bouncy especially when avoiding the

cattle grids that were gated by going round the edge. All good fun, and the type of riding the Phil and Sandy are familiar with when

A lovely lunch and then back to the house ready for Sandy to head back to the resort to meet up with the Ladies of Harley for prosecco and a catch up. The LOH event was full of laughing and lovely ladies all hugging and catching up. A photo competition to ‘guess the baby’, which confused Sandy at first as ladies were asking her which photo she was, and it was only then that she realised she was one of the choices, although there were far more choices than pictures. Lots of announcements and a little more prosecco and then the ladies headed outside and a great opportunity for me to be held up high and proud

rest to lodge while they went off to the main resort to enjoy the bands and meet other HOG friends. The following day Phil went with the housemates to do a day ride, and Sandy went off to join the Ladies Ride Out. Led by Lorraine and with back markers Jean-Ann and Elaine who she knows well,

it was a great afternoon. Afternoon tea was in a railway carriage with all the ladies enjoying tea and cake in traditional LOH fashion. Returning to the main rally lots of hugs as the ladies parted, and

along all met up and set off early for a day ride to Applecross. Phil and Sandy have done route a number of times, and it sounded

really exciting. Although some of the roads sounded a little tricky, single tracks, passing places, hairpins and sweeping

October 2019 The sign at the bottom of warns of the perils of the road, but they were not deterred. Worth every moment, the ride reached the

view point half way up after the first hairpin, and the photo’s began. I was held tight in case the wind caught me, to get a great picture with the amazing Scottish Highlands as a backdrop, and then off everyone headed to have lunch after ‘coming down’ to reach the banks of the loch, and enjoy fish

and chips. The ride back was pretty spectacular, peeking out from panniers I would see how immense the highlands really are as a backdrop to some amazing riding roads, with blue water running along the roadside, green and grey mountains at every angle, and the bright blue sky above. Returning to the lodge, Phil and Sandy left me to rest after a big day out, almost 300 miles and some great conversation I wondered what the next day might bring.

TITG was for most now over, so the last night of entertainment did not disappoint, a firework display some great bands and final goodbyes for many as they returned home. Sandy’s parents live in the Highlands so Phil and Sandy decided to take the time to visit them say hello. I joined them and had a look round where they lived, the views from their home overlooking the Cromarty Firth, where they live just north of Inverness were spectacular. Tuesday was leaving day for the housemates, but Phil and Sandy had decided to extend their holiday and doing some ‘tourist’ things. Having done business in both Glasgow and Edinburgh they had both gone past the Kelpies but never visited. So off

took one look at this huge boat lift which went up so very high

19

they went, and it was quite a trip. The Kelpies are huge! Derek and Viv had visited the day before, but without me as Phil and Sandy had not quite managed to co-ordinate a drop off point safely, so I was held aloft once again in front of the two statues Duke and Baron. The tour was really interesting, and we all touched the horseshoe for good luck inside the statue of Duke, before heading off the Falkirk Wheel. I posed outside, and like Sandy

and was quite glad there was not time to take the trip. Phil and Sandy then went to stay in a very lovely hotel nearby and I settled down to rest after the adventures of the previous days. Arriving home, after a trip of just over 1500 miles, I was returned to the dealership, all ready for my next adventures representing Chrome Hill.

‘CHROME HILL DO NORFOLK’ It finally arrived. Friday 20th September and we were off to Norfolk for a weekend of socialising and riding. Bring it on. Due to time constraints, we could not meet up at HarleyWorld and zip over to Newark to meet up with some other attendees, so we set off from our home in Derby. Rick, also from Derby, rode along with us so we weren't quite Billy No Mates. It was an uneventful run, down through Kegworth, Zouch (one to remember if your doing the Touring ABC's), Melton Mowbray and Oakham. Then we hit a road closed when trying to get round Rutland Water. A quick U'turn and we diverted around the south of the waters and back up to Stamford. Short diversion thankfully. After Stamford, it's only a short ride into Market Deeping and the excellent Iron Horse Café. If you have never been then you need to take the time to pop along. It is in the style of an American Diner. Setup for locals but with a definite Biker theme. It's also a pub at night and gets very busy. My nephew and his wife life in this village and recommended us to this place. We arrived before the main party, from Newark, so sat at the long table that had been reserved for us and picked from the menu. No sooner had we ordered when we heard the distinctive rumble of HD engines coming down the street. The rest of the group had arrived! There were eight others (six bikes) who were travelling down on their own due to work commitments etc. and we would meet them at the hotel. Sponsored by - www.harleyworldchesterfield.co.uk

Email - editor@chromehill.co.uk We all got served pretty quickly considering that all the food is freshly cooked to order. Nice as well. Off we all went, following Rich to our Hotel. Thanks Rich, for a great route, ably captained and for Paula being sweep. Lovely ride through some great villages, on good roads made the trip. We all got to the hotel to find that Dennis, Jean, Karl & Linda had got there before us and were already settling in. We did not hang about in joining them. We have stayed here before, so knew what to expect, and were not disappointed. Great rooms, good food and drinks. Later in the evening we were joined by the final four, Phil, Sandy, Simon & Jayne after they had (separately) got slightly lost. Well, we all do every know and again but at least they got there in the end.

22 Saturday

we woke to brilliant sunshine. Down for breakfast and off for 9.30am. We had arranged to meet the Fenlanders Chapter at their dealership in Newmarket. They had recently moved to new premises and we wanted to see it anyway. they were sorting out a ride for us (or so we thought). Lead by me (Derek) with Rick sweeping, we fueled up just outside Newmarket and were soon pulling into the dealers. It was getting hot and there were quite a few bikes in the car park. A good sing for a decent ride out, I thought. Parked up and went into the shop. What a great place. Plenty of space, bikes easily looked at (not too close together) and plenty of them. There was also a few Fenlanders in the coffee area and they invited us to have a drink (FOC) and grab a doughnut as well (provided by Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/chromehill.chapter/

October 2019 the dealer). Very nice as well. As we ambled round the store and bought a few bits, I approached one of the Fenlanders to ask about the ride out. What ride out? Came the reply. The guy that had arranged to meet us had not arrived and no-one could get hold of him. I asked if they had any set routes that we could use and was introduced to one of their Safety Officers. He told me that they were taking out a couple of new members, who had not ridden with a chapter before, and we would be welcome to join them. Talk about stepping up to the plate! They were expecting 5 riders and took out 23!!! Great ride as well. Through the back roads around the area to a little cafĂŠ (that got a bit perplexed at so many coming in all together, but coped well). Whilst we were chatting outside there was a roar of an aircraft engine and over the top of us flew a Hurricane and Spitfire. Brilliant sight in the clear blue skies. We were near to Duxford and there was a world war flight taking place that day. We didn't go in but did ride right past the entrance after leaving the cafĂŠ. As we passed we could see Bi-Planes and Tri-Planes flying around in a mock dog fight, complete with flashes and bangs in the air around them. Very difficult to stay focussed on the ride but we all go through safely. Once onto the A11 we separated from the Fenlanders (to whom we owe a few drinks and a ride out when they come our way) and continued to another stopping point that we had pre-arranged. The English Whiskey Distillery. The staff were outside and took down the rope so that we could park next to the main building on hard ground. The car park is gravel, so if you visit beware. Sponsored by - www.harleyworldchesterfield.co.uk

23

Email - editor@chromehill.co.uk There was also a bike fan visiting the place, filmed our bikes and posted on Facebook that it was a brilliant sight seeing us all ride in. These people are so friendly and they have a great café as well as loads of excellent whiskeys, gins etc. Well worth a detour. Once we had spent an hour or so we all saddle up and set off for the hotel. The staff filmed us leaving as well, aren't we popular. Back to the Olde Windmill Hotel, Great Cressingham for our final night and evening meal. Another great night was had by all. Sunday and we all head back today. Rick had to leave at 6am as he was being picked up from home to be taken to the airport (work, not holiday). Some of us also needed to get straight back as we had other things to get done so we said our goodbyes and headed home. The rest had 24 a little more exciting time of it but I will have to leave that to one of them to let you know what happened. You could always ask them at the next ride out, Natter Night or when you see them at HarleyWorld, otherwise you may never know (ha, ha, ha)!!

‘The rest’ led by Simon made our way to ‘ V-ate Roadhouse Smokehouse’ at Boston for lunch via New York! A great dining experience as I’m sure you can see from our pics. Huge thanks to Simon for finding and leading us there. Managed to get almost home before the rain…. But not quite! So a sever drenching to end the weekend very memorable! LADIES Of HARLEY SPARKLE TOUR The Sparkle Tour has been running for Ladies of Harley who ride, for four years. There is also a Twinkle Tour for ladies who pillion. This was my third Sparkle Tour, and they get better every time. I set off to meet up with all the ladies on the Thursday afternoon, arriving to a wonderful welcome at Robin Hood Harley Davidson. Luggage was stowed in Linda’s car (she rides pillion with Anne), the bikes were parked safely in the workshop and off we all set to the first hotel for a pre-tour dinner. It was obvious from the start that Ann (Lindum Colonia Chapter) and Vicki (Sherwood Chapter) had planned everything to the finest detail. The table was set, we have pre-ordered and the gossip and fun began. I knew some of the ladies, but not all. Going round the table and adding up the years, we had an average age of 54 and joint riding years of 175, some ladies with a great many years of riding others with only a couple. But it mattered not, we were on a great adventure. was Friday 13th. 13 ladies, 12 bikes, what could go wrong? Very little really. After a wonderful morning riding through Robin Hood country, and back into Derbyshire, through Matlock, Buxton and beyond. Amazing views from Blaze Hill, and a couple of road closures to entertain us, but we arrived safe at Harley World, Chesterfield, where we were greeted by Jean (our LOH officer) and other members of the chapter who made me feel proud to be part of Chrome Hill. One of the ladies’ bikes had a

problem with a throttle sticking so Patrick, without hesitation, got the bike into the workshop, fixed and we were on our way.

Saturday, and we awoke to the most glorious weather. Off we set towards Manchester, the direct

But not before we enjoyed a lovely lunch, with cake, coffee and lots of clambering on bikes in the showroom, and shopping in the clothing department – great bargains to be had. And the first of many goody bags. In the afternoon we continued round the Peaks and Dales taking in Snake Pass, and then on to our hotel Hollin Hall Country House, near Macclesfield for a shower, and a much needed drink at the bar. The hotel welcomed us with amazement as 12 bikes, all parked up in the reserved area ready for photo’s. Then off to the local pub for a fabulous meal, Prosecco, and lots of laughter.

journey would have been about half an hour, but not the route we took. Winding through the villages of Cheshire and waving at people mowing lawns and cleaning cars as we passed. We arrived at Manchester Harley Davidson to find a bbq, and Phil (my other half) waiting for us. Phil video’d our arrival, and again more pictures were taken, and more goody bags.

Manchester Harley Davidson

After coffee, more chat and lots of waving as we left, we set off for Chester Harley Davidson. One ‘gentleman’ followed us out of the dealers, and finally got to the front of the ride and waved us down to tell us we were going the wrong way to Chester, after explaining that actually this was the plan, he was not convinced, and followed us for a while. We 30 had acquired a stalker, although not for long. We arrived at Chester Harley Davidson where they had organised lunch, and yet another goody bag. The lovely ladies from Deval legion, who I have ridden with through Wales earlier in the year were there to meet us. After lunch we headed back toward the hotel via Little Moreton Hall, a tudor house, now a National Trust property where we stayed for an hour or so, did the tours, got dressed up, ate ice cream and continued to get to know all the ladies as we enjoyed the sunshine. A little late leaving as there were a number of

The best of the riding was this After taking pictures outside the section, climbing high through hotel, and inside on the the Peaks, and down into wonderful staircase, we packed villages, epic views, some tricky up the bikes, and set out. Had wiggly bits, and of course a we been able to see the views couple of road closures to from the roads up to the Cat and challenge us, we got back to the Fiddle it would have been pretty amazing. But, we did not see any hotel just after 6, with instructions to get a move on as other bikes up on this section, I the table was booked for 7. Dinner was gorgeous. We toasted our leaders, gave out gifts to each other and generally confirmed that this tour had really hit the spot in helping ladies to bond, encourage and challenge each other. The riding we had done, had for many, been the first time up a steep hill, with gravel and pot holes and something of a challenge. riding in such appalling conditions, and to give ourselves an LOH pat on the back, as we were clearly the only bikes up there that morning. Refuelled, and ready to go, we headed back toward Robin Hood Harley Davidson, where we had started this amazing adventure. To be greeted by so many people, from so many chapters, its difficult to explain how emotional we all felt. We rode in to waving, cheers and some familiar faces. Much hugging later, and after even more photographs we tucked into the bbq, and magnificent cake,

made by the lovely Ladies of Sherwood Chapter, and our final goody bag. We were starting to wonder how we would get all the lovely gifts, t-shirts and poker chips home. The generosity of the dealerships we visited was amazing, lunches, t-shirts and so much more, choccies to keep us energised, and repairing bikes on the spot. The friendships we have made will last longer than this weekend. The riding we did, confirmed our abilities in handling the iconic motorcycle that is Harley Davidson. And for some of the ladies, they are already deciding what the next model will be. The next Sparkle Tour will be announced early next year with the dates for 2020. Will I be applying‌.? most definitely, and hope that other lady riders from Chrome Hill might join me.
