Property News As the temperature drops with the onset of winter, there are a few things landlords and tenants can do to minimise the risk of cold weather issues. To avoid frozen pipes, we always advise that heating and hot water systems that are water based, are kept on the minimum setting, so the pipes do not freeze and burst. A burst pipe in an apartment block can not only cause damage to your property, but can cause damage to properties below. During the colder months, it is usual for people to try and dry their washing inside the property, using airers placed next to radiators. This is OK as long as the room is ventilated by opening a window a small amount. If the room is not ventilated, the moisture from the drying clothes will form condensation on the walls and windows, which will lead to black mould forming. Heating equipment will be used more over the next 4 months, so having an annual service at this time of year will ensure you are less likely to have an issue with a breakdown over the Christmas period, when you can’t get hold of a plumber.
Be proactive at this time of year, and make sure your property is ready for winter. Tenants appreciate landlords who ensure their property is well insulated, and has heating and hot water systems that do not break down.
Take responsibility for your own actions at this time of year, and make sure you are careful not to cause damage to the property by being negligent. It is always better to work with your landlord if issues occur, and help them look after the property, as it may be your home for a while.
Fix any leaking guttering and plastic pipes NOW, as once the temperature drops below freezing, the water leaking onto the pavement will turn to ice, and could become a slip hazard. It’s not too late to check if you are eligible for free insulation. Why pay for it yourself, when government schemes are giving it away, as long as you meet the criteria. Do it now to reduce energy bills over winter, and to bring your property up to an acceptable Energy Performance level, before you have to do it by law.

JUDGE JANE...
The immediate increase in our energy bills following the announcement by one political leader that a vote for his party will mean fixed costs being applied by law if elected momentarily provided a glimpse behind the scenes of the relationships between big business and elected members of parliament. It also revealed how low some are prepared to stoop to secure power. The general public has been relentlessly victimised by the energy industry from the moment it was sold into private ownership. There has been no measurable benefit passed on to us from the sale of our publicly owned assets – most of which are now in the hands of overseas interests. Representations we would achieve greater choice and continued low prices as a consequence of greater competition can clearly be seen to be false. Legally binding agreements relating to targets for the pursuit of renewable energy resources are currently under close scrutiny from those with an ideological and/or economic interest in slowing progress. Budgets are being analysed and propaganda prepared in an attempt to find
ways of increasing profits for interested parties and reducing the scope and/or impact of their legal responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. In the meantime the planet we rely on for our continued existence is ruthlessly exploited in the pursuit of profit by a few, powerful corporations with the collusion of politicians. Those opposing it such as the Greenpeace activists recently arrested by the Putin government in Russia are being relentlessly targeted and criminalised in a variety of ways. The information emerging from various sources is we have no idea what the actual cost of oil and gas is at the point of purchase. Evidently it is not sufficiently large to reduce the numbers of private investor groups pursuing a place in the industry. If we look at the profits capable of being generated it is clear what motivates their interest. These figures do not include the financial information relating to all the other “bites of the cherry” achieved by distributors or energy brokers before it eventually gets to the public. The network is now so complex and multi layered that much is duplicated at great cost to the end user so, is it any

wonder the consumer is now paying so much for it as a percentage of our income? As winter approaches many on low, fixed incomes must be considering their shrinking options for keeping warm this year. News that the severe weather we experienced last winter hastened the deaths of those most vulnerable to energy price rises accompanies the details of how large that group is becoming. It makes for uncomfortable reading. It is a shameful thing that so many cannot afford to live a full, comfortable life because a few are so concentrated on how they can exploit the lack of adequate protection afforded by our elected representative. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/ private services you can email me with them at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com

Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards 2013 Chesterfield’s very best food and drink establishments and producers were honoured at glittering awards ceremony hosted by TV chef and presenter Ainsley Harriott on Wednesday 30th October. 10 business and individuals across 11 categories were named as Chesterfield’s finest at the sell-out awards ceremony held at Chesterfield College’s Heart Space Building. Awards host Ainsley Harriott said: “It was amazing to see the passion felt by everyone in the room about the Food and Drink Awards. The evening brought the hospitality community together. The awards have also created a new standard in food which is very exciting.” He also added: “It’s inspiring to hear that Chesterfield College is training the next generation of chefs.” On the night Calabria restaurant took three of the titles including the prestigious Chef of the Year award which went to Nicholas McNerney. Calabria owner Vic Risorto said “We’re delighted with the wins, made all the more special for being at Chesterfield’s first ever Food and Drink Awards. The wins represent everything that Calabria prides itself on – great customer service, good food and atmosphere. We enjoy customer service and want to make people happy. It’s the ethos of the restaurant and the entire team. It’s as simple as that.” The Town’s first ever Food and Drink Awards were organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Chesterfield College. More than 50 nominations were received across 11 categories and only 16 businesses and six individuals shortlisted for the awards. Amongst the award winners was W. Ayres, who was named as the Chesterfield Food Hero, an award recognising their impact on the area’s food and drink scene. W. Ayres has been a familiar face on Chesterfield’s market since 1937 but has been trading in Chesterfield for 100 years. Owner Charles Ferne, his wife and son – who all work on the market stall – accepted the award on the night. Winner of the Young Chef of the Year Award, Ryan Lee - from the Red Lion at the Peak Edge Hotel – commented “I started from the bottom as an apprentice,

‘You ain’t heard nothing yet’
Al Jolson’s famous words at the beginning of the first feature length talking movie, The Jazz Singer, of course. But just wait until you hear about some of the huge figures that have been paid out by divorcing celebrities who chose not to plump for the safety of a prenuptial agreement. Most recently, according to The Sunday Times’ Rich List, Dragon’s Den star Duncan Ballatyne’s fortune plummeted from £430 million to £85 million following his divorce without a prenup; Heather Mills won £24 million from Paul McCartney after a mere 4 year marriage;
Michelle Cooper, partner and head of Graysons WE’s divorce and family department says “Maybe these figures are just a drop in the ocean for these celebrities, but for the rest of us, our pre-marital assets might be more precious to us and prenuptial agreements – which are on the increase at the moment – are a very popular way of protecting them. Whilst not legally binding in UK at present, prenups are usually accepted by the courts as proof of a couple’s intensions should they divorce. In fact the Law Commission looks set to give prenups the green light following a recent landmark case, Radmacher v Granatino, in which the UK Supreme Court accepted a prenup as evidence of their intentions – even though they weren’t married in UK and the prenup was written in Germany.” So, when ‘I do’ turns into ‘I don’t’, prenups offer an open and honest route to sorting out financial issues without turning an already difficult time into a nightmare.

There are some great films to see at the cinema this month so let’s take a look. So we’ve reached the end of the year, it’s gone by so fast! There’s been some fantastic films released this year and there’s still a month left to go. So take a look and I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Coming Soon…
Frozen
What better way to end the year than with a Disney movie. We find ourselves in the kingdom of Arendelle where there are two princesses, Elsa ( ) and Anna ( ). Elsa is set to become Queen and also possesses the power to create snow and ice. She has been suppressing these powers ever since a traumatic event years before involving her sister.
Then during her July coronation to be Queen she lets her powers get out of control which triggers an eternal winter that freezes the entire kingdom. It’s now up to Anna to find Elsa, who’s gone into hiding, to save Arendelle from being frozen forever. Anna also has the help of a rugged mountain man, Kristoff ( ), his reindeer sidekick Sven and a comical snowman called Olaf ( ). They must encounter mystical rolls, Everest-like extremes and magic around every corner in a race to find Elsa and save the kingdom before it’s too late.
Homefront Starring British action star Jason Statham comes a crime-thriller which has been adapted from a novel of the same name by Sylvester Stallone, who has been Oscar nominated for his ). The film also screenplays ( stars James Franco ( ), Winona Ryder ( ) and Kate Bosworth ( ). Statham plays Phil Broker, a former drug enforcement agent who moves off the grid with his daughter to a seemingly quiet backwater country town to escape his troubled past. As anyone would expect,
things soon change and Broker’s world is turned upside down when he discovers an underbelly of drugs and violence. Soon enough there’s a sociopathic kingpin, Gator Bodine ) who puts Broker and his ( daughter in harm’s way that forces him back into his old life to save his family and the small town.

The Christmas Candle And now comes a film that will definitely bring the festive spirit this year. Set in 1890 in the fictitious town of Gladbury, there is a legend about a special Christmas candle and that every 25 years an angel visits the candle maker and bestows a miracle on one candle and whoever lights it has their miracle come true on Christmas Eve. However, shortly after the arrival of the new pastor, David Richmond, it goes missing. With the villagers all looking to him to find them a new miracle, he try's to bring them all into the electric age with not much success. Even though he struggles he does find an ally in the form of feisty villager Emily Barstow ( ). With a mix of traditions and progression coming
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Coming from the 2004 smash hit, this needs no introduction. We have Adam McKay returning as director as well as Judd Apatow ( ) as producer. The sequel is also written by Apatow and Will Ferrell who also stars again. After the 1970's brought prosperity to the Channel 4 news team, the group disbands and hits rock bottom until a 24 hour news channel is being put together and the group is recruited to join, and they take the channel by storm. With the usual antics from this crowd, dubbed the Frat pack, there are sure to be plenty of laughs. As well as Ferrell, also returning are Christina Applegate, Paul

Rudd and Steve Carell. There is a stigma here that all sequels are inferior to their originals. There will always be some truth in this as sequels can never be based on original concepts. Although there have been exceptions to this rule as well as others that have met their originals standard. It will be up to whoever watches it as to whether this will be one of them but with the demand and anticipation that there has been for this, I doubt it will fail to bring in the audiences.
Dec/Jan 2013/14
together there is sure to be some surprises around the corner. It may not break any new ground as far as Christmas films go but it should be enjoyable all the same. Also starring Hans Matheson ( ), Samantha Barks ( and Lesley Manville ( ).

"NATIONAL WOMEN'S REGISTER The Dronfield Group of this national organisation meets once a fortnight, rotating Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so that members can attend even if they have a regular commitment on one of these nights. Meetings are held in members' houses and start at 8.00 p.m. promptly. National membership costs £17 annually, and we also pay 50 pence at each meeting with a proportion going into our group's fund and the remainder to the hostess towards refreshments. We occasionally have speakers but mostly run the meetings ourselves with a wide variety of topics. Now that a lot of our members are retired we also have a programme of daytime meetings and also outings in the summer months. These are held on Thursdays monthly from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m. There is a Book Group and Lunch Club once a month and a Walking Club. NWR is for lively minded women of all ages, though most of our members are in their 60s. Why not give us a try? We are a friendly and welcoming group. For further details please ring Joan Cohen on 01246 417123."

THE
FIRM DOES LUNCH
Spotlight On Quad Computer Services Ltd… Having a reliable, robust IT system is a fundamental part of most organisations’ day-to-day workflow . Quad Computer Services Ltd work closely with their clients to ensure problems are avoided by monitoring and advising as systems evolve. They speak a language that everyone can understand, translating fluently from technical jargon to plain English. This enables everyone to make good decisions based on a proper understanding of all the information. Quad’s flexibility also allows their clients to be flexible as requirements change. As we all know , the only thing guaranteed in business is change. Quad are also happy to liaise with other third parties to ensure that IT needs are met, where in-house expertise may be lacking or require further support and experience. What happens if things go wrong? IT infrastructure is essential to most businesses, so you need to make sure you have the correct practices and safeguards in place should part of that infrastructure fail. Y ou need the hardware and software which will provide the best resilience for your requirements. Quad can provide a solution that best fits your organisation and your budget. Using the latest technology , they are able to monitor your system remotely and often fix problems without having to perform a site visit. We can also perform preventative maintenance so that everything continues to run smoothly and reduces the risk of failure. Having a support contract in place will ensure peace of mind knowing that your problem will be evaluated and reviewed within an agreed timescale.
What would happen if your PC or server stopped working? Are all your important documents backed-up? Are you 100% sure they can be recovered from the last backup you took? When did you last test it? How quickly do you need to be up and running? Can you get PCs, servers and your network up and running within a timescale that fits your business? Too often, action is only taken after a failure of a piece of hardware. By then, it is too late. No suitable backup strategy is in place and no contingency for hardware has been considered. Quad are frequently called to businesses that have lost months of work (and sometimes everything) because their plan was implemented but never tested. Check what you have in place today, as tomorrow you might need to implement it. A common oversight is that organisations do not have backups off site. Whilst the office building smoulders, and the fire brigade tell you it will be a week until you can safely get to your fire safe, you’ll wish you had a backup tape stored safely at a company like Quad.
Adam
Quad, understand that different organisations have different requirements when it comes to support. Quad have years of experience and many sites installed, so we can tailor a solution to suit you.
