November Gardening

November is a relatively quiet month mainly due to poor weather conditions and shorter daylight hours. Plant your tulip bulbs this month, some Tulips persist year to year, some perform less well and are treated as bedding, and replaced every year. Now is also the last chance to plant out winter bedding. You could try wallflowers, forget-me-nots, Bellis, Primula, Viola (winter pansies) and other spring bedding plants, planting them into well- prepared ground, or pots of suitable compost. Ornamental grasses and bamboos can be cut back and tidied up at this time of year. It is still a good time to lift and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials. Lift and store dahlias, cannas and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by the first frosts. Large tubs that are at risk of cracking in the frost should be covered with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece, to insulate them over the winter

also raise containers onto feet or bricks to avoid them sitting in the wet as drainage is essential at this time of the year. Apply an autumn mulch to protect plants that are borderline hardy such as and Agapanthus, own leaves, of the red hot pokers can be tied up and used as protection for the crown. Have a good clean up removing leaves and debris between plants as this will provide a good place for slugs and snails. Fill in gaps in flower borders with small, pot-grown herbaceous perennials and alpines, They aren’t expensive at this time of year and if planted now will make an impact in spring Collect and dispose of all fallen rose leaves, especially those that are diseased and infected with a fungus such as Black spot. DO NOT place rose leaves on the compost heap. Bin them or burn them! Prune tall roses by one third to avoid wind rock damage. As long as the ground is not to waterlogged or frozen you can plant herbaceous perennials, shrubs, hedging, deciduous trees roses and fruit trees. Bonfire night is a good time to burn your unwanted cuttings and leaves, Make sure there aren't any

hedgehogs, or other animals in amongst your debris. If you would like to encourage birds into your garden throughout the winter months you need to create a bird friendly environment. Clean bird baths, or provide a clean source of water if there is a frost, put out bird food and fat balls. And finally sit back relax and plan your next years garden and changes doing as much research as possible to get it right first time. If you need any advise or quality plants and shrubs come and visit us at Doncaster road , langold, S819QL or give me a call on 07979377570 always happy to help. www.johnsplants.com

£ Your Money Matters £

Ensure you don’t become one of society’s lonely old people The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt recently made the shocking announcement that up to a million elderly people are being consigned to a life of loneliness and ill health because of society’s shameful failure to take responsibility for older relatives. This shocking announcement revealed a much deeper problem in society – the fact that millions of people have not made financial provision for their old age, giving them the financial means to socialise and remain active. This, according to financial advisors Cheetham Jackson based on Saltergate in Chesterfield, can be attributed to three common mistakes many people make: Relying on savings in a bank

Miller Homes Brings Learning To Life For Nursery Children Children in the nursery class at Chesterfield’s Abercrombie Primary School have been able to end their latest project in style with a little help from Miller Homes Midlands. Since the beginning of term, the youngsters have been learning all about houses and how they are built. To help bring their lessons to life, the children were paid a visit by Miller Homes production director Malcolm Ceney, contracts manager Paul Sweet and Garry Bowler, site manager from Miller’s nearby development The Portlands. Malcolm, Paul and Garry brought along a number of items found on a building site, including bricks, mortar, a selection of tools and roof tiles. They even kitted the class out in mini hi-vis vests and hardhats for the session, and parked a forklift truck outside the school.

As teacher Faye Hall comments, the lesson was the perfect way to end the project: “Since the beginning of September we’ve been talking about builders and the type of materials communities we’re working in. they use to build the homes we live in. It was great that “I definitely think we have some the team from Miller Homes was able budding young builders at to support us and actually bring Abercrombie Primary School.” Miller Homes’ development The some of those items into class. “Children always learn best when they Portlands is based just off Sheffield are able to see and experience things Road and offers a selection of homes, with prices starting from £159,950. first hand.” For more on The Portlands, call Malcolm Ceney added: “The children actually knew a lot about 0808 250 6460, or visit the sales open Thursday-Monday building and were able to answer lots centre, of the questions we asked them. Property News There’s a lot of talk at the moment about property prices being at their highest level for a number of years, but is this a true reflection of our local area? The Office For National Statistics have reported an increase of 3.8% across England compared to August 2012, but these figures are influenced by the London market, which has risen by 8.7% over the last 12 months. If we break down the figures to show the local areas, the story is quite different. In Derbyshire there are 2 extremes with Chesterfield showing a 7.7% increase, but Derbyshire Dales showing a 7.8% decrease.

When using an agent to manage your property, make sure you check the on-line marketing descriptions and pictures, to ensure they meet your expectations. A more detailed description and good pictures will attract more interest than poor quality photo’s and a few lines of text.

In South Yorkshire Rotherham increased by 4.8%, whereas Sheffield saw a 7.3% decrease. In Nottinghamshire Newark & Sherwood witnessed a large increase of 10.8%, but Ashfield District saw prices drop by 2.9%

When looking for a place to rent, think about the detail the agent or landlord has put into the marketing description.

As you can see the generalisation of the property market increasing throughout the country gives a false impression of what is actually happening on the doorstep

If someone puts the effort and attention to detail into their marketing, they are more likely to put effort and attention to detail in regards to other aspects of your tenancy.

Experts are forecasting that house prices will rise by 6.6% during the next 12 months, but are saying that it will then start to level off again, and the risk of another property bubble is minimal.

The Bank Of England has suggested recently that the base rate will stay at 0.5% for the whole of 2014, which is good news for mortgage repayments. This combined with the Governments push on affordable housing may help first-time buyers to get their feet on the ladder. We will just have to wait and see.

JUDGE JANE...

Christmas is coming and with it the pressure to eat, drink and be merry. I say pressure because this year it will be particularly hard to feel merry for many people especially those hit hard by the rising cost of living. The pressures experienced by individuals and families vary widely but, if I was to generalise I would say most ordinary people are making “adjustments” to their lifestyles. The difference will be to what extent, how and why? I have a friend who confided in me recently that she and her husband are “struggling” which for them means eating out twice a month rather than weekly. I find this sort of conversation difficult at the best of times as these friends are very wealthy by any standards so to avoid causing offence I find myself exploring the topic of what we mean by “struggling” on the off chance I could be misunderstanding her. It is my friends view that; both she and her husband have worked hard to achieve a certain lifestyle and being forced to adapt to socialising less often or to visit less expensive eateries is to admit defeat. It is particularly strange to me they hold these views as we were at primary school together and grew up in fairly close proximity and I know both are from relatively poor backgrounds. The one single benefit both my friends enjoyed which was not available to their parents or their children was a grant aided University education. Both graduated to careers in finance at a

time when that was a growth industry. They took advantage of consistently high salaries, annual bonus payments and contacts in the right places to expand their wealth. The economic slump has meant these benefits are no longer as regular or predictable and investment is risky so they feel insecure and vulnerable. At a certain point in the discussion my friend crossed a boundary with me when she said she considered throwing in the job to live a life on benefits, with no responsibility except a weekly trip to a food bank. I’m shocked but not surprised this is her view as we are bombarded daily with this false set of messages from TV, radio and other news media. It was the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels who said that “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” My former friend is not persuaded by the truth even when she sees it in writing. She remains of the view Job Seekers Allowance would be sufficient to maintain her living standards because that is what is

JJane implied in all the media reports about those dependent on state support. In another part of my life I have friends who also work very hard but, have insecure jobs and/or earn small wages despite having trained for a career. I rarely hear them complain other than to express their frustration at being criticised or misrepresented in the media when they strike for better pay and conditions because their wages are so low they are at times unable even to afford to travel to work. Cycling across the city to work is only possible if you can afford a bicycle! This group of friends interpret the word “struggle” to mean having no money to pay for a safe, warm home with regular meals. Yet, it is this group of friends who will be out and about at Christmas donating their time, skills and friendship to those they consider “less fortunate”.

not only in the local Derbyshire area but globally too. This would benefit people who want to run their own business starting with a few hours per week at a time to suit. This could be perfect for a busy Mum or Dad juggling childcare with work or for anyone looking to develop an extra income stream without compromising their present family or job commitments. There are no set up or on-going fees or geographical limitations like a traditional franchise. Forever (which has Investor in People gold and champion status) offers superb training, support and of course local back up from Steve and Sharon. It is possible to earn from a few hundred to many thousands per month once the business is established and this continues to grow and become a secure royalty style income that is willable too. Distributors can make their sales and grow their business network however they feel works best for them, such as direct selling, Facebook and Twitter, home parties, exhibitions or simply by word of mouth and referrals. Legal 500 recommendation for family law experts

A recommendation in the Legal 500 is quite an accolade, and one that not many family solicitors in South Yorkshire have been afforded. Graysons WE, however, is celebrating again this year; delighted to have been recommended as a leading firm in 2013, following several years’ endorsement by the guide. The Legal 500 is widely known as the definitive guide to the legal profession and, in its own words, “recognises excellence in the regional market” setting a “benchmark for excellence across the UK legal market”. Recognising “the best of the best”, and based “purely on merit”, the recommendation is testimony to the quality of expertise and service from Graysons WE’s family department. The family team at Graysons WE is highly experienced and talented and is one of the largest such teams in the area with expertise to suit all individuals. It offers outstanding client care and innovative new services such as fixed fee divorce packages and a specialist service for busy professionals. A wide range of services are available which include traditional family law solutions as

well as collaborative law and round table meetings. With offices in Sheffield and Chesterfield, GWE has the distinct advantage of being a local, rather than a multi-national firm (which usually make up the top tier of the Legal 500 rankings), which allows the flexibility to give an individually tailored service at extremely competitive rates; suiting all pockets. All of its family lawyers are experts in their field, many are members of specialist Law Society and Resolution panels and all are extremely friendly and approachable. Becky’s Movie Previews Now we’re getting towards the end of the year, we will start to see some contenders for the Oscars. There are some great films to see at the cinema this month so let’s take a look.

Coming Soon…

The Family Robert De Niro just can’t stay away from films surrounding the Mafia, gangsters and organised crime. Well, if it isn’t broke… as the saying goes. This time it’s a comedy crime film with De Niro as a former mafia boss who after making a mistake and finding out there’s a hit on him and his family, decides to turn

informant on his boss. Then he and his family are put into witness protection. They find themselves in France with FBI agent Stansfield ( ) keeping supervision. Although it seems as the behaviour the family are accustomed to, isn’t easy to let go. Bribery, extortion, explosions and general bad behaviour are rife and soon they catch the attention of those who still hold a grudge. It isn’t long before hitmen are coming to town for a visit. De Niro is supported by Michelle Pfeiffer ( ) as his wife and Glee’s Diana Agron as his daughter.

Carrie

One of the most famous high school prom scenes is coming back to our screens. Originally released in 1976, we get to see again the haunting tale of a lonely girl who gets pushed too far when a prank is pulled on her at the high school prom involving pig’s blood. With this being the remake there won’t be any surprises plot-wise, but with the advancement in special effects we should be in

for a visual treat. Heading the cast as the girl with telekinesis is Chloe Grace Moretz ) and Julianne ( ) as Moore ( Carrie’s religion-obsessed mother.

Saving Mr Banks

Everyone knows Mary Poppins. Whether you hate it or can’t wait for it to be shown every Christmas, you know the story of the magical nanny who likes to sing a song or two. But what everyone may not know is that the film was almost never made in the first place. The person who wrote the book, P.L Travers was resistant to her beloved characters to be turned into a farce. For 2 weeks in 1961, Travers reluctantly spent with Walt Disney in LA as he tried to win her over. She was played songs by The Sherman Brothers, including a spoonful of sugar and let’s go fly a kite. She was an Australian-born English author and he was the creator of the ‘happiest place on earth’. They couldn’t be more

different from each other. Then the real story behind Mary Poppins is discovered with very personal ties to Travers that brings reason and purpose behind her reluctance. Walt Disney is played by Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) and Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Love, Actually) is P.L Travers. The pair a superb together and bring their real life counterparts to life as though we are back in the 60’s when it all began. In reality, Travers disliked the film version so much she never allowed any more Mary Poppins books to be made into film. But seeing it all played out may give audiences a reason behind her decisions.

Philomena

Dronfield 1st

Coming from the director of The Queen ( ) we have a tale of separation and heartache starring the unlikely pairing of Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Coogan ( ) plays Martin Sixsmith, a former journalist turned government advisor who finds himself without a job. He then hears of a woman with a rather interesting story to tell. Although resistant at first, he decides to write a human interest story about her. Her name is Philomena played by ) and Dench ( when she was young she was forced to give up her child for adoption as she had him out of wedlock and she was a Catholic in Ireland. After her son’s 50th

November 2013

birthday she decides she would like to try and find him at long last. And so they both go on the journey together to discover whatever happened to her son. Although Philomena may struggle with what she may discover. It may seem like a bit of an unusual pairing, Alan Partridge and M from Bond, but it seems to work for the story. A heart warming tale that will be well worth a look.
