WELCOME

A warm welcome to October 2013’s issue ...

North Notts 1st!

Wow we are on our 12th issue…can’t believe a year has passed already! We would like to thank all our advertisers and readers for making this magazine successful! This is your local magazine so get in touch and let us know if there are local events and charities that need help to reach the local community! We offer free space for articles written by local fund raisers and space for interesting community news! Please enter our competitions and be in with a chance to win tickets to a Mansfield Football Club match. Our magazines are a family gem and I thought I would tell you a bit about us - I have a wonderful partner, Paul, a brilliant Dad, Rich, and five fantastic brothers and sisters aged between seven and twenty-five - so am very, very lucky and have a fairly busy family life! My mum Paula set up her 1st magazine as a place for my dad to advertise his business when they were struggling to afford a regular advertising campaign in local papers - hence our mags are great quality but low cost - we find that our readers also hang onto them until the next one drops through their letterbox. We found that many businesses and readers agreed and loved the mag; this has resulted in our expansion over the last six years and culminated in the launch of new issues. Now in 2013 we have six mags being produced each month - ‘Chesterfield 1st’, 1st Mags Chesterfield South’, ‘Bolsover, Clowne & Barlborough 1st’, ‘Dronfield 1st’, ‘Sheffield 1st’. and recently increased our coverage by 4,000 copies for this issue ‘North Notts 1st’. With the demise of local free advertising papers we identified a further gap in the local market for a low cost but good quality advertising service; we make no pretence that we are anything other than an affordable forum for local businesses, trades people, Clubs & Societies to let the local community know what they have on offer….. We are not a lifestyle magazine and do not report news, however, having said that if you have community / local news / events that would be of interest to your fellow residents then please send it to us and we will do our very best to feature it - we also offer reduced rates for charities and non profit organisations. We are self funding and completely independent so our mags rely on the support of local businesses to facilitate their existence and I would like to take this opportunity to thank firstly our existing advertisers for supporting us with all our issues and secondly the locally based businesses in this area who have taken the plunge and supported us - we hope you are pleased with the result! 18,000 copies of ‘North Notts 1st’ are printed and delivered and will reach around 63,000 local residents - it will also be available to view online at www.1stmags.co.uk along with our other issues. If you are a local business looking for a cost effective and productive way to advertise your services, then please check out our very affordable prices on page 29 or give me a call for a friendly tailored solution to your advertising needs. (Full details of our delivery areas are available on our web site)

Spooktacular Sponsored Stroll We are calling upon ghosts, ghouls, witches and any other spooky creatures to join the annual “Spooktacular Sponsored Stroll” at Chatsworth on Sunday 27th October. The broomsticks (and walking boots!) have been dusted down by the Chesterfield Fundraising Group for Cancer Research UK and they are ready for some hocus pocus to encourage as many people as possible to sign up, take part and raise as much money as possible for the vital work of Cancer Research UK. Angela Shawcroft, Chairperson of the fundraising group, said: “One of our group’s aims is to put the ‘fun’ in to fundraising! This will be our second Spooktacular Sponsored Stroll, held in the beautiful grounds of Chatsworth House in the Peak District. It’s a family friendly event where fancy dress is optional, but with prizes’ for the best costumes’ and with so many dressing up, who wouldn’t want to!” “Witch walk will you do this Halloween to help beat cancer?” As the world’s leading charity dedicated to saving lives through research, Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has seen survival rates double in the last 40 years. Last year’s event was fun for the whole

family! Again the walks will take place in the eerie woods at Chatsworth, which will be decorated with spooky surprises. There will be a choice of short ‘Bat’ walk (5k) complete with letter trail for the children or a long ‘witch’ walk (10k). Angela added: “Our first people to register are coming all the way from York! We even have confirmed fellow fundraisers and volunteers for the charity, coming to help at the event all the way from Surrey and Glasgow! Everyone is really pulling together on this great family event, so don’t let distance stop you from joining in.” The Spooktacular Sponsored Stroll is on Sunday 27 October at Chatsworth House. Registration and costume judging starts at 10 am before the walkers set off at 11am. Entry for both distances costs £12.50 for adults, £6.00 for children or £25 for a family ticket. Online registrations can be made at www.spooktacularstroll.co.uk. Those registering before 30th September will receive a free Spooktacular wristband. Witch walk will you do?!...

The Office of Fair Trading has recently announced that hidden annual fees are eating away at the savings of nearly 1.5million of those with old company retirement schemes. Higher charges for workers with cash in policies created before 2001 is leaving them far worse off than those in newer schemes – losing up to 40% of their life savings in the worst cases. And ethical financial advisers Cheetham Jackson, based on Saltergate in Chesterfield, is advising people to check their policy wording now. Cheetham Jackson has done its sums and worked out that more than 10% of what some people think they are paying into their pension pot each month, could actually going to fund the champagne

Could you be a victim of the pensions swindle… lifestyle of investors by way of ‘management’ fees. Worse still, even if your pension investment is losing money, the management fee is still being paid with many investors none-the-wiser. Michael Heath, Director of Cheetham Jackson, says: "People need to look for the word 'managed' on their policy, specifically 'managed fund' or 'managed equity'. In most cases this will indicate that a percentage of their monthly payments have not been going into their pension pot.” He advises people in this situation to have their policy reviewed by an independent financial adviser. Scott stresses the word 'independent' as many financial advisors can be tied to financial products. Additionally, he advises people to request quarterly reports on their investments, rather than an annual statement gives people a better picture of how their pension is performing. The statement should also include a breakdown of fees. Scott added: "From the very beginning Cheetham Jackson has operated differently to a lot of financial advisers. We develop a long-term relationship with our clients by being open, honest and

upfront about any associated charges.” If you're worried you're the victim of poor pensions advice, Cheetham Jackson advises people to: Ÿ Check policy wording. Does it include the words 'managed fund' or 'managed equity'? Ÿ Seek a free review with an independent financial adviser to uncover any potential problems Ÿ Ask for a breakdown of policy fees Ÿ Request quarterly policy updates, rather than annual statements. If you think you’ve been the victim of the ‘great pensions swindle’, Cheetham Jackson runs a free, no obligation, drop-in advice surgery every Wednesday from 10.00am – 2.00pm. Qualified independent financial advisors are on hand to provide quality reviews and advice on both existing and new pension plans. October Gardening Now is the time to finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi and crocuses - tulips can wait until November. Choose plump firm bulbs and plant in a location with good drainage. Add grit if the soil is heavy and ensure your pots and containers have plenty of good drainage. Bury bulbs at three times their own depth, tip upwards and make sure there are no air pockets around the bulbs. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land. Some great varieties to narcissi to Grow include scented varieties Sir Winston Churchill, Repete, early cheer, bridal crown and Tete a Tete is a good all round dwarf type, all these are suitable for either pots or the garden. Eye catching tulips include Abu Hassan, China pink, Happy generation and spring green.

www.johnsplants.com

Plant new shrubs and perennials - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant them so their roots have a chance to become established before winter. Divide herbaceous perennials such as daylilies , geraniums and rhubarb, Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of compost and water generously. Cut back perennials that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage. Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers borders and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; mini cyclamen (these will only tolerate light frosts) heathers, dwarf conifers, variegated box, pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make good displays, bare rooted wallflowers are now available and add great winter colour to borders, two good varieties are Persian carpet and Tom Thumb (a dwarf variety). Move any tender plants under

cover before the cold sets in (if possible allow them to dry out partially before lifting them). If you want one of the true hardy cyclamen this is hederifolium and comes in a variety of colours and will naturalise into large drifts. It's important to lift containers that will be left outside off the ground to ensure good drainage and to protect against frost damage. This month is probably the best time to plant new shrubs trees and hedging either pot grown or bare rooted before the harsh frosts arrive, remember to water in well and support taller Specimens. If you want to move shrubs and small trees take as much root ball as possible, handle carefully and incorporate compost in the new hole, also mulch around the surface to retain moisture. As the daylight shortens sit back and relax and start to plan your garden planting scheme for next year. If you require any further information or quality plants and shrubs either visit us at our plant centre in Langold S819QL, or contact me at john@ johnsplants.com.

Whitwell & District WI Friday 6th September 2013 was Derbyshire Federation Quiz Night. Whitwell WI sent 2 teams to our local venue at Staveley Methodist Church. Fourteen teams in total competed at this venue, and whilst we did not win both our teams gave a good performance – so well done! Everyone enjoyed the evening and thoroughly recommends it. At our meeting on Monday 9th September 2013 Dr Harrow who was a GP working in Whitwell until his retirement to take up the post of Police Surgeon covering several Police Stations in the area gave us an insight into his role. The welfare of people detained, for whatever reason becomes the responsibility of the police once they are charged and this one area where the Police Surgeon plays an important role. Attendance at crime scenes, analysing breathalyser results, ensuring detainees have their correct medication are all part of the days’ work for the Police surgeon. It was a very enlightening evening for us all. Our exhibition for the evening was ‘A walking stick’ and five members brought in what can be regarded as family heirlooms. One was a branch carved with the names and dates of a Summer Camp in the 1970s, another, which had been in the family for at least three generations was merely a very worn tree root. One had been carved especially by a friend for an avid walker who had never been able to use it because it was too long! It does have a useful purpose though as it lives by the front door to be used to deter intruders! One was presented to a current members father who had worked as a Deputy at Whitwell Colliery, the top of this was carved as a miner’s head complete with helmet and tools, the light in the lamp was a ‘diamond’. The last was a true farmers’ walking stick brought in by a member who is a farmers’ wife. They were all special, but the stories behind them made them even more so.

Our President is holding a Coffee Morning on 20 September 2013 in aid of the Defibrillator Fund – details available from any WI member.

Lisa Hall will be giving us a demonstration on Decorating a Cake. The competition will be – Decorate a cup-cake. . Home-made cakes, raffle and a delicious cup of coffee. Come along and meet us – every second Monday in the month from 7.00pm in the Community Centre, the Square, Whitwell, S80 4QR or check out our web site:

JUDGE JANE... The fate of Royal Mail is sealed and thousands of British citizens like me are preparing to experience rocketing prices, fewer products and in some cases the total loss of their delivery service over the next few years. This of course is all about bringing “us” good value. I’m not cheering or rushing out to buy shares because that’s not going to be the case. I don’t have a crystal ball, psychic powers or inside information to rely on for this statement. I just look at the outcome for all the other vital public services sold off to public ownership and see what happened to them, their employees and service users and I’m bracing myself in anticipation of more of same. Imagine for one moment “we” the general public – the taxpayers who own this business had been properly consulted on this plan. How would you or I feel about having less than 6 deliveries weekly, being forced to rent a PO Box if we live in a rural area, tower block or other potentially problematic residential situation and/or paying double or treble what we now pay to send or receive letters? Depending on who you are and how you live your life this “value for money” option could be really bad news for you. 96 % of people employed by Royal Mail are against the sale. They are ordinary people like us who have an insider’s view of the business. Their voting behaviour should be a warning to us of what is to come because that figure represents people at all levels in the business – not just our posties.

They aren’t voting against the sale because they fear being able to deliver a better, good value service working with new equipment from nicer premises. They are voting against the notion that any private company is able to balance the needs of staff and customers with the demand for high profits by shareholders and other investors. The logic for these concerns is obvious. A publicly owned business is not at the mercy of the financial markets which are just posh betting shops after all. It does not have to take into consideration the concerns of investors or the fact they may abandon the business if they consider it unprofitable at some point plunging it into crisis for reasons not associated with its daily function. The promises made by politicians before the sale of the various public transport services, utilities and parts of the health service have failed to emerge. These “new” organisations have not delivered “good value” or “real choice” to the majority of consumers and most now rely on a combination of public subsidy, low wages and minimal service options to retain their investors. Does the Royal Mail – or whatever it will be called in the future - have some radical new plan for avoiding the same commercial challenges which face all businesses? I suspect not but, I would be delighted to be proved wrong. On that note and always keen to look on the bright side I notice some people are benefiting from all this chaos. Each day there is a new consumer program with stories of ordinary people

JJane being overcharged, left without services and or fleeced out of their savings by dodgy traders. Or, there are the stories about those made homeless, ill or worse as a consequence of misunderstanding complicated small print problems associated with overly complex offers dreamed up by faceless, unaccountable marketing people. If that’s not bad enough most of these companies are now owned by obscure, mysterious overseas investment organisations which just want to be able to dabble with the share markets using the assets of that particular organisation. Unfortunately journalists on cheap telly or talk radio won’t dig down to reveal the real source of the problems these stories actually represent. Citizen journalism is probably the way forward so get writing. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/private services you can email me with them at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com

It’s just my opinion! Please tell your Local Business where you saw their Advert

Becky’s Movie Previews The cold nights are drawing in fast and the winter clothes are taken out of storage so what better way to keep off the chill than a trip to the cinema. Let’s see what October has in store for us.

Coming Soon…

Turbo

one for kids and adults alike as DreamWorks has a new animation for us. The film follows the tale of Theo, a.k.a. Turbo, an ordinary garden snail who dreams of being the greatest racer in the world. Although, his obsession with everything fast makes him an outsider in his own community and a constant embarrassment to his older brother, Chet.

The Fifth Estate

Then on one fateful night, during a freak accident, Theo is sucked into the supercharger of a drag racer and his DNA is fused with nitrous oxide. He awakes to find he has the power of incredible speed and accuracy. He even takes on some traits of a car itself including the alarm and his eyes becoming flashing headlights. And so begins Theo’s quest for fame, notoriety and to finally achieve what he’s always dreamed of. There’s an impressive voice cast as well that includes Ryan Reynolds as Turbo ( ), Paul Giamatti as older brother Chet ( ), Samuel L. Jackson and Snoop Dogg. Everyone heard about WikiLeaks when it started hitting the headlines from 2006. News stories broke out about US military operations taking place in Iraq and the Middle East and also the list of the members of the BNP amongst other things which were never meant for public viewing. It began with a view to being an organisation which publishes secret information, news leaks and classified media from anonymous sources. This is exactly what they achieved. The film follows the events surrounding the inception of the website and the people involved. It is also based, in part, on former spokesperson for the site, Daniel Domscheit-Berg’s book, “Inside Wikileaks: My time with Julian

Assange and the World’s Most Dangerous Website.” The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange (looking apt with his long blonde locks) and Daniel Bruhl as Domscheit-Berg who was recently seen last month in Rush as Niki Lauder. No doubt the film will press as many buttons as the website itself with a version of the script being published onto the site itself in recent weeks. We’ll just have to see how it performs at the cinema.

A Nightmare on Elm Street As with Valentine’s Day, we’re getting a re-release of a film which lends itself to the occasion. As its Halloween we’re being treated to the original A Nightmare on Elm Street for one night only. The classic horror was first released in 1984 and was written and directed by horror legend Wes Craven (

). It starred a fresh faced Johnny Depp and Robert Englund as the superb horror villain, Freddie Krueger. For those not familiar with the film, the story surrounds the dreams of teenagers and what happens in their dreams, really happens to them. In their dreams they are being stalked by a man with a burnt face and knives on his fingers. As more and more are dying in their sleep the

mystery as to why he’s after them soon becomes clear when the kids parents reveal a secret of their own. Although times have changed a lot since the 80’s, in horror and effects especially, this still brings chills to the spine. A classic and a must see for a night at the cinema on Halloween.

How I Live Now

North Notts 1st

October 2013

This story is based on the 2004 novel by Meg Rosoff about an American girl called Daisy ( ) who is sent on holiday for the summer to the English countryside to stay with her cousins. All seems to be going well as she starts to enjoy the company of her family and then she meets and falls in love with Eddie ( ). Daisy thinks she’s having the time of her life until they find themselves going into hiding and having to fight for survival as World War 3 breaks out which includes a nuclear attack. When Daisy and Eddie are separated it’s a journey of not only survival but for them to find each other again. Although still only 19 years old, Ronan has had her fair share of big roles including Atonement

alongside Keira Knightley, The Lovely Bones with Mark Wahlberg and Hanna starring opposite Eric Bana. Not too shabby. The film is also directed by BAFTA winning director of The Last King of Scotland Kevin Macdonald. And with the events that are currently in the news, this film couldn’t be more on point for what could happen in the future.

ICONS

Quentin Tarantino When American film director, Quentin Tarantino, burst on to the international scene in 1992, with hi stylized gangster movie , he became an overnight sensation. His movies have since been much imitated and are characterised by imaginative, bizarre plot lines, intense bursts of violence and witty dialogue. Born Tennessee, Tarantino grew up in California. Where his early love of film led him to drop out of school to work in a video store. He worked alongside fellow film buff, Roger Avary, who later became his collaborator, sharing the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay . for While dispensing his movie knowledge to customers by day, Tarantino spent his spare time working on the screenplays that would and eventually become He also managed to gain a bit part in the sitcom and forged the connections necessary to get his scripts into the hands of influential film producers. was a His debut movie low-budget, independent production, that received little attention in the US, but was immediately popular in Britain, where it won critical praise and sky-high box office receipts. Shown at the Sundance Film Festival, it suddenly caught the critics’ attention and the spotlight turned to the director. Vilified for the films violence and bad language, Tarantino was unapologetic stating that he wanted to provoke a reaction from his audiences. Tarantino gained recognition from Hollywood with the release of his second

, in 1994. The film, starring movie, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, was notable for its violence and bad language, diluted by mordant black humour and a complex non linear plot. Following this , with a screenplay by success, Tarantino, was released in 1993. A romantic crime film, it was not directed by Tarantino, but once again, audiences were dazzled by its pop culture references, sharp burst of violence and innovative plot twists. Tarantino continued to court controversy (1997), his homage to the with ‘blaxploitation’ movies of the 1970’s (which had targeted urban black audiences). Similarly, (2003 and the two-part action thriller 2004), his take on martial arts and revenge movies, also polarized the critics. (2009) tackled the war movie genre with Tarantino’s customary originality and earned eight Academy Awards Nominations. Aside from his startlingly creative screenplays, Tarantino specialises in reviving the careers ‘resting’ stars - such as John , Pam Grier in Travolta in and David Carradine in . This adds another dimension to his movies, as audiences are astounded and usually delighted to see old stars reappearing on the screen in surprising roles. Rather like Alfred Hitchcock, Tarantino appears in cameo roles in several of his movies, but it is for his ground-breaking work behind the camera that he stands out.

CHESTERFIELD - Bucking the Trend! Destination Chesterfield has welcomed news that the town has maintained its top 10 position in The Local Data Company’s latest report on shop vacancy rates. It is one of only three towns north of the ‘Watford Gap’ that are listed in the report’s top 25 best performing centres with the least vacant shops. The report, which analyses over 1,900 town centres, shopping centres and retail parks visited in the first

half of 2013, ranks Chesterfield 8th in the large centres category. Figures also show that Chesterfield’s shop vacancy rate has fallen from 8.7% in 2012 to 7.7% in 2013, placing it above the large affluent tourist town of Windsor (9.1%) in the south. The average vacancy rate of towns in the large centres category currently stands at 13.5%. Further welcome news includes the fact that the East Midlands has shown the greatest improvement at -0.4%. Matthew Hopkinson, director at the Local Data Company commented: “Chesterfield is performing well as a town with the vacancy rate nearly halving to 7.7% since its peak in 2010." Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “The report is hugely encouraging, confirming our belief that Chesterfield’s retail sector is expanding rapidly. In the last two years many major high street names, including Debenhams and TK Maxx, have chosen to invest in Chesterfield further strengthening our retail offer. The

town’s mix of independent and high street retailers and excellent location, coupled with good transport links and the growing property market, ensure footfall from local shoppers and those outside the area, helping make the town a go-to destination.” George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, added: “Chesterfield has got it right in terms of its overall retail mix, which means it can offer something to every type of shopper. It has a popular market and some interesting and unique independent shops and boutique stores, as well as some big name national retail brands which help drive footfall into the town centre. “Further developments due to come on stream later this year and beyond will help Chesterfield to continue to buck the national trend and attract even more investment into the local retail sector.” In recent years Chesterfield has invested heavily in the town’s retail offering, helping it attract inward investment from large high street names as well as fledgling businesses. Its historic Market Hall is undergoing a £4 million redevelopment. Opening in October, the market hall will provide 45 internal and external retail units, 22 offices, a central café/coffee shop and conference facilities. In November 2013 the town will welcome Hobbycraft and Asda Living. In October 2011 Debenhams opened a full range department store in the town with Rob Hadfield, Head of Property at Debenhams commenting: "We have long felt Chesterfield is an exciting destination for a potential Debenhams store.” Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high

streets with unemployment decreasing by 0.5% during this time. Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “We could have chosen to bunker down and ride out the recession, but we didn’t. We chose to forge ahead with our marketing plans and this shows in the recent retail figures. “The results also demonstrate that the pro-active work we are doing with the town’s businesses is paying dividends. I’m pleased with the progress we have made but I believe there is more to come if we continue to work hard on delivering the right climate for business growth.” The investment in Chesterfield as well as its buoyant housing market is a key attraction to retailers choosing to invest in the town, as it has increased local footfall as well as providing a ready pool of employees. Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.

Property News Do you live in, or do you own a House in Multiple Occupation? An HMO can be either: ● A house split into separate bedsits. ● A shared house or shared flat, where people have separate renting agreements. ● A hostel. ● A bed-and-breakfast hotel that isn’t just for holidays. ● Shared accommodation for students. It may not be easy to work out whether you're living in an HMO, so get advice if you're not sure. Below are some basic guidelines that can be used to check if your home is an HMO. ● Three or more unrelated people live there as at least 2 separate households – for example, 3 single people with their own rooms, or 2 couples each sharing a room. ● The people living there share basic amenities – for example, a kitchen and/or bathroom. If you rent a House in Multiple Occupancy, your landlord will have extra responsibilities, and may even require a license. Some of these responsibilities include: ● Proper fire safety measures are in place – there should be smoke detectors in every bedroom and in communal areas, and the kitchen must have a heat detector ● Annual gas safety checks are carried out ● Electrics are checked every 5 years ● The property is not overcrowded ● There are adequate cooking and washing facilities ● Communal areas and shared facilities are clean and in good repair ● There are enough rubbish bins for everyone living in the house.

When looking for an agent to help manage your property, ensure you check all the charges thoroughly before agreeing to a contract. Some agents have hidden charges and fees that are not obvious, but may end up costing you a lot of money.

When looking for a place to rent, ensure you know what the agent fees are before you make an application. Some agents have hidden fees, such as credit checking fees, guarantor referencing fees, tenancy renewal fees, and charges to issue a reference when you move out.

These rules are there to reduce the risk of fire, and to make sure that people living in shared houses or flats have access to decent facilities. Due to the additional requirements and/or license, many agents do not offer HMO’s, so you may need to find a specialist agent if you are wanting to rent one.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe… She had no pension so there was nothing else she could do…..

Pension can be one of the biggest assets in a marriage – but it is often overlooked, as it is not an immediately realisable asset. When divorcing, most people concentrate on those assets that have an instant value: the house, the shares and even the car take priority. However, divorcees may well rue the day they made that decision; when they reach pensionable age and are sat in the local park whilst their ex is enjoying the sun in St Tropez! Calculating the true value of a pension can be complex; much may depend on the type of pension scheme it is part of. Pensions with a high street provider, company pensions and pensions with organisations like the NHS or Army may all have a paper value (usually called a transfer value) that look the same, but in fact the true actuarial value of those pensions, and therefore

the income each will provide, will be vastly different. Valuing a pension is one thing; working out how to distribute it is another. There are generally three ways in which a pension can be shared. These are: Offsetting is where one party keeps their pension and the other party receives a greater share of something else such as the family home. This can be a difficult calculation. For example; if someone has a pension with a value of £100,000 and the other a property with a value of £100,000, it would be unusual to treat them as the same value for offsetting purposes. This is because one can be 'used' immediately, whereas the other cannot be accessed until pensionable age is reached, and then only part can be taken as a lump sum the rest must be taken as income. A pension attachment is an arrangement where, when the pension finally does pay out, part of it is 'earmarked' for the other party. This means both parties have to wait until the one with the pension retires, and there is a risk there may be little or nothing to take if he or she dies before the pension is taken. Pension sharing is where part of one party’s pension is actually taken out of their pension fund and transferred into a pension in the other party’s name. This cuts down on the risk within a pension attachment order because, as the pension is in the

Michelle Cooper, partner and head of family department at Graysons WE

Michelle Cooper spouse’s own name, they can draw it when they retire without having to wait for the other party to retire, and it does not matter what happens to the other party. However, care must be taken to make sure the pension is valued properly and the split is a fair one. So, if you want to avoid living in a shoe, and are looking for the most effective divorce settlement for your own situation, get expert family legal advice now from one of the largest, award winning family law teams in the region. 1st Mags Testimonials: from “Well today has been a massive one for Homemade Desires, finally got the perfect Advertisement I needed. You will be able to find me in the Sheffield 1st mag. Brilliant little company that really knew what they were doing even if I didn't. Also done a little recipe in there so check it out and have a go at baking...” from “As a long-term advertiser with Paula and the team at Chesterfield 1st / 1st Mags I’m delighted to lend my support to this new publication. I hope the people of Sheffield are as pleased with their new magazine as we are to advertise in it. I wish everyone the greatest of success and look forward to servicing the people of Sheffield as we are sure it will be as much of a runaway success as the other magazines that are published within the group.” Beth from K9 Cuts “I have advertised with 1st Mags for over 6 years now. Great service, great results and lovely people.” Paul Rodgers from PR Plastering “I have advertised with 1st Mags for over a year now and I’m really pleased with the response I get. Although response was slow at first I now receive calls every month for quotes & I don’t need to advertise anywhere else!!” from “I'll give you a good moment - just done a policy (only £300) but it came directly from the ad on the back of the Bolsover mag.” from “I have advertised in Bolsover 1st since I launched my business in 2008. I have been through ups and downs but 1st Mags has been consistently bringing me work in every month. I even get calls on the fourth week of the month!”
