A big hello again to everyone in Sheffield, the summer holidays are in full swing., I’m hoping for some more sunny days! I hope you will over the coming months make good use of and enjoy your copy of Sheffield 1st! As we are still a new publication to Sheffield I thought I would tell you a bit about us - I have a wonderful partner, Paul, a brilliant Dad, Rich, and five fantastic siblings aged from six to twenty-four - so am very, very lucky and fairly busy! Paula set up her 1st magazine as a place for my dad to advertise his business when they were struggling to afford a regular advertising campaign in local papers - hence our mags are great quality but low cost - we find that our readers also hang onto them until the next one drops through their letterbox. We found that many businesses agreed and loved the mag; this has resulted in our expansion over the last six years and culminated in the launch of this new issue. Now in 2013 we have seven mags being produced each month - ‘Chesterfield 1st’, 1st Mags Chesterfield South’, ‘Bolsover, Clowne & Barlborough 1st’, ‘Mansfield 1st’, ‘Worksop 1st’, ‘Dronfield 1st’ & from April ‘Sheffield 1st’. With the demise of local free advertising papers we identified a further gap in the local market for a low cost but good quality advertising service; we make no pretence that we are anything other than an affordable forum for local businesses, trades people, Clubs & Societies to let the local community know what they have on offer….. We are not a lifestyle magazine and do not report news, however, having said that if you have community / local news / events that would be of interest to your fellow Sheffield residents then please send it to us and we will do our very best to feature it - we also offer reduced rates for charities and non profit organisations. We are self funding and completely independent so our mags rely on the support of local businesses to facilitate their existence and I would like to take this opportunity to thank firstly our existing advertisers for supporting us with this new issue and secondly the Sheffield based businesses who have taken the plunge and supported us - we hope you are pleased with the result! 8,000 copies of ‘Sheffield 1st’ are printed and delivered every month and will reach around 28,000 local residents - it will also be available to view online at www.sheffield1st.co.uk along with our other issues. If you are a local business looking for a cost effective and productive way to advertise your services, then please check out our very affordable prices on page 23 or give me a call for a friendly tailored solution to your advertising needs. (Full details of our delivery areas are available on our web site)

Don’t delay call today 01246 828378 / 828074 or text ‘advert’ to 07789 390124 and I will call you right back. Until next month...

www.johnsplants.com The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, bright colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. The two most important jobs this month would be to ensure that your containers and baskets are well watered/ fed and deadheaded, feeding with a high potash feed once a week. Another essential job would be to remove all weeds from your borders as they compete against your plants for moisture. Container grown shrubs and perennials can still be planted but must be well watered until well established, a wide range of both are always available some in flower or bud to give a continuation of summer colour and fill gaps in borders and containers. Time to prune the wisteria by shortening all long shoots, which are growing out from the main branches back to five or six leaves Give herbs and lavender a light prune after flowering this will keep them compact. prune back all perennials that have already finished,Trimming of perennials and shrubs might also encourage a second flower flush especially

hardy geraniums, wiegelia, and roses. In the green house continue to make sure your tomatoes are adequately staked and the green house is very well ventilated , if you have around five trusses take out the tip of the plant so there is a good chance of development and allow for ripening before autumn. Pests and diseases usually flourish this time of year so take a walk around the garden and inspect for any problems, it is far easier deal with if caught early. One thing to remember is that if you have to spray try and do it late evening when there is less chance of killing bees and other beneficial insects. If you need any advice or quality garden plants and products then visit us at Doncaster road langold, or check out our web site, always happy to help.

We like to have a bit of fun, but the bottom line is about business, making contacts, sharing experiences, you soon learn to listen as well as talk! The Firm is where you can network and benefit from meeting with businesses from all sectors. It is only £10 per person (cash on the day please) to attend with no joining fee or subscriptions and a hearty breakfast will be served at each event too! JUDGE JANE... I’m just in the middle of a “loyalty” storm – by which I mean I am being forced to consider what the word really means in all sorts of environments to which I am connected. For example I went to buy dog food from a large pet store and was asked if I would like to have their VIP loyalty card. When I enquired what value this represented to me it was explained I could expect to take advantage of certain offers only made available to those with this card. I am more than aware its real value is to the retailer and said as much when I declined. I know they would use the card to plot my purchasing behaviour and determine whether I react to “offers” in the shop, on the internet or both. In other words am I going to be the type of customer they want and if so can I be persuaded to spend more? It’s all very cynical and a long way from the days when I called at a local shop to buy only what I needed from people who I knew lived locally and to chat about unimportant things like births, marriages and deaths while we engaged in the sale process. In the latter I didn’t need to be offered a card to prove their loyalty to me it was evident in everything they did. The pressure put on companies large and small to establish brand loyalty is enormous. Last month I discussed the issue of gas and oil production and how many of the big names spend millions disguising their unsafe practices. They do this using a variety of means including sophisticated advertising campaigns as well as involvement with “good causes”. The organisations challenging them are regularly made out to be “oddball” groups full of strange, hairy people with weird dietary habits. These negative portrayals are used to place pressure on people to

modify their views and opinions for fear of being seen as “different” or “abnormal”. It’s a form of bullying and should not be seen as anything else. I was listening to a radio program recently that told the story of how Coca Cola is involved in healthcare in rural Africa. What price does brand loyalty bring in this environment one asks? Its representatives apparently show individual members of local communities how to spread the word about various medicines and health practices and gain financial reward at the same time. In societies where individual survival is often dependent on the kindness of strangers it should be of concern to everyone to discover that the pursuit of profit is being made more appealing than loyalty to one’s community. I found it difficult to comprehend how a company with so many bad production practices and which has played a part in the western obesity epidemic can be permitted to get involved in delivering very lucrative healthcare products and medicines in developing countries. Closer to home I had a call from a business contact today. At the age of fifty nine and after forty years with his employer my contact found himself being sold along with the business to new owners. His hard work and loyalty as an employee has enabled his former boss to build wealth sufficient for a comfortable retirement. My contact has always been on minimum wage and has never earned enough to do other than pay his bills and enjoy small occasional luxuries. After the sale was completed his old boss disappeared without saying either goodbye or thanks for all his loyalty. The new owners in their turn took what they needed from him and

JJane

then made him redundant. I could only listen and attempt to show that I understood why he felt so disappointed. It may not seem obvious to you when I say my loyalty is to him not his former boss but, my view is that without the hard work and commitment of this man my former client would not have had the business that paid me for my work. Loyalty is an important part of our commitment to each other both socially and personally. It oils the wheels of daily life and enables us to respect those close to us and to trust that we will treat each other with regard. Big business cannot extract our consistent loyalty until such time as it treats us as individuals to be respected not things to be exploited. Small business needs to remember it will never achieve anything without the support of others and to recognise it cannot place a value on the loyalty it gathers from the local community. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/private services you can email me with them at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com

It’s just my opinion!

Jack and Jill went up the hill…. On a journey of marriage that they expected to climb together, but what happens when the hill becomes too steep, and they just can’t face the incline anymore? The inevitable tumble – trying with all their might to avoid the breakages. It seems harsh, doesn’t it?, but that is exactly what the divorce process often appears to be for separating couples; what starts out as desire to reach the top together, ends up in a downward spiral, with a lot of heartache, loss of esteem and costs. The thought of dealing with the fall alone and unaided can be daunting, but the fear of costs can be even more overwhelming, leaving couples tempted to try to deal with the cracks themselves, and often ending up distraught. Recent press reports about the demise of legal aid, along with stories of high profile, big money divorces ending with costs of hundreds of thousands of pounds, have certainly done nothing to allay fears, sensationalising the divorce process and its costs, and leaving couples heading for the courts alone. However, the thought of dealing with divorce alone and unaided is equally daunting, and the results can be

devastating. Michelle Cooper, partner and head of Graysons WE’s family law department, sees every day the difficulties that occur when people do not get the right advice early enough. Michelle says “On many occasions I see people who have got themselves into a real mess by leaving things too long before getting advice, and trying to deal with matters themselves to ill effect. By the time they get advice the situation is either very bad and takes a lot of unravelling, and/or they increase their own costs because of the time it takes to sort out and reverse the difficulties they are in. The scaremongering in the press has not helped at all; the big money cases reported are exceptional, involving multi- million pound assets, and, despite what many people think, legal aid is in fact still available in some cases.

NAPIT - National Association for Professional Inspectors and Testers NAPIT is an organisation committed to householder safety in the domestic sector and ensures that through the competence of our registered installers, householders can be confident the work carried out on their home complies with the relevant regulations.

The NAPIT Microgeneration Certification Scheme allows installers to fit renewable energy technologies and self-certificate the work in accordance with Building Regulations whilst allowing the householder to access financial incentives.

NAPIT provide a simple, fast search service so that you can find a tradesperson in your area that you know you can rely on. You can also use our Jargon Buster to ensure you understand the terminology used by NAPIT and our registered installers.

NAPIT constantly strive to increase public awareness of the inherent dangers of poorly installed work and the potential dangers posed by non-competent tradespeople.

NAPIT registered installers work under a Government-approved Competent Person Scheme (CPS) to notify any electrical, plumbing, heating or ventilation works undertaken on your home to your Local Authority Building Control, in accordance with Building Regulations. NAPIT are also UKAS accredited for the certification of installers under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Microgeneration is the application of renewable energy technologies on a scale small suitable for domestic properties, such as Solar Photovoltaics (PV), Solar Thermal Hot Water, Wind Turbines, Heat Pumps (ground and air source), Biomass Combustion and Micro-CHP. These technologies often compliment conventional energy and heating technologies or sometimes completely replace it.

NAPIT operate a comprehensive and rigorous Code of Practice for our registered installers, who are assessed on a yearly basis to ensure they continue to work to the highest standards. A job can be safe, comply with Regulations and still be done to a low standard, which is why NAPIT offer a Work Quality Guarantee scheme to give you peace of mind; details of which appear on the Compliance Certificate issued by NAPIT on behalf of our registered installers when the work has been completed. The Work Quality Guarantee Scheme covers notified works should the registered installer be unable to rectify the works because they are no longer in business. NAPIT issue you with a Certificate of Compliance for the work carried out on your property and NAPIT also update your Local Authority Building Control department, which will also help with

NAPIT Registered Installers working in the domestic sector have the option to sign up to a consumer code of practice that complies with the Government's award winning a nti-cowboy TrustMark Scheme and confirms that NAPIT Registered Installers work to good health and safety practices, monitor quality and customer care and hold the correct insurance documentation at all times. By using a NAPIT-registered installer you can rest assured the work done on your home will be safe, comply with current Regulations and be done to the highest quality standard. Please note: the NAPIT Work Quality Guarantee is only applicable to notified works under Competent Person Schemes and additional terms and conditions apply.

The Lone Ranger

Coming from Disney Studios and director of Pirates of the Caribbean Gore Verbinski this is set to be a big budget outing hoping for some of the popularity and profits they experienced with Pirates. They even have Jack Sparrow himself in a starring role. First appearing on a radio show in 1933 and then a popular TV series from 1949 to 1957, The Lone Ranger is instilled as a cultural American icon. Even if you haven’t watched anything to do with these characters, everyone knows the characters of The Lone Ranger, his American-Indian friend Tonto and his horse, Silver. Who doesn’t know the phrase, “Hi-Ho, Silver! Away!”? Armie Hammer ( ) takes the lead as the title character and Johnny Depp

( ) is his trusted side-kick in this offering. The film follows the duo as they try to bring justice to the American Old West. Not usually far from Depp in a feature film, Helena Bonham Carter is in a supporting role along with Barry Pepper ( ) and William Fichtner ( ).

Buyer’s Guide! You need a new computer, but what should you buy? There is a huge choice of devices available but which is best for you? First ask yourself what will you be using your device for? Where will you use it? All devices can play music and access the Internet, but you need a proper keyboard if you intend to work on longer documents. What is your budget? Here typical shop prices: Tablet £70-500 Smart phone £100-£500 Laptop £250-£1000 Ultrabook £350-£1200 Desktop £350-£1000 All-in-one £500-£1000 Apple laptops and desktops £900-£1800 The operating system is the computer program that allows the device to run applications. Applications are the useful programs that you will use every day like Internet Explorer and Firefox to browse the web or iTunes and BBC iPlayer to play music and videos. The main current operating systems available are Microsoft Windows, Google Android, Apple OS and Open Source Linux. There is a wider range of software available for the Windows platform but this is matched by a greater number of virus attacks compared to the Apple OS. Apple devices are very pretty but typically twice the price of a Windows machine with the same power. Apple strongly encourages you to obtain music and video from

their own store but there is a wide range of multimedia sources for Windows machines. A tablet can access the Internet through wi-fi and play music, videos and some less computer power hungry games. Tablets have screen sizes between 7 and 10 inches corner to corner and are light and portable. They usually have longer battery lives than laptops but do not have a separate keyboard, which makes them unsuitable for extended typing sessions. These are mobile phones with features similar to a small computer but with a small screen, usually between 3 and 5 inches and only an on-screen keyboard. Applications are mainly limited to games and communications. Smart phones are highly portable and normally stay with you for most of the day, but are not suitable for long reading sessions. More than 25% of online searches are now made via smart phones but their screens are too small for reading long web pages.

and on your travels. They are small and can be tucked away when out of use. There are three main advantages of a desktop PC over the alternatives: You can have a very large screen attached, you can have a separate ergonomic keyboard and you can choose a specific video card for playing the latest games. A gaming PC is cheaper than a gaming laptop of similar computing power. A desktop setup is usually fixed in place and taking up a large space often dominates a whole room. As smart phones become more powerful we will see some that can plug in to your TV screen to use as a mini desktop. The Ubuntu Edge is such a device and is currently seeking development funding on Indiegogo.com.

rost F n o J r D

Dr Jon Frost From

Laptops have screen size up to about 17" and many have computing power comparable to desktop PCs of similar cost. In fact, taking into account the price of a monitor, a laptop may be a cheaper option than a desktop at present. Larger screen laptops can be used as work machines for word processing and spreadsheet applications with a slight ergonomic disadvantage of a fixed keyboard relative to the screen. Laptops are portable so can be used throughout your home
