A big hello again to everyone in Sheffield, it’s back to school already! I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer and I hope you will over the coming months make good use of and enjoy your copy of Sheffield 1st! As we are still a new publication to Sheffield I thought I would tell you a bit about us - I have a wonderful partner, Paul, a brilliant Dad, Rich, and five fantastic siblings aged from six to twenty-four - so am very, very lucky and fairly busy! Paula set up her 1st magazine as a place for my dad to advertise his business when they were struggling to afford a regular advertising campaign in local papers - hence our mags are great quality but low cost - we find that our readers also hang onto them until the next one drops through their letterbox. We found that many businesses agreed and loved the mag; this has resulted in our expansion over the last six years and culminated in the launch of this new issue. Now in 2013 we have seven mags being produced each month - ‘Chesterfield 1st’, 1st Mags Chesterfield South’, ‘Bolsover, Clowne & Barlborough 1st’, ‘Mansfield 1st’, ‘Worksop 1st’, ‘Dronfield 1st’ & from April ‘Sheffield 1st’. With the demise of local free advertising papers we identified a further gap in the local market for a low cost but good quality advertising service; we make no pretence that we are anything other than an affordable forum for local businesses, trades people, Clubs & Societies to let the local community know what they have on offer….. We are not a lifestyle magazine and do not report news, however, having said that if you have community / local news / events that would be of interest to your fellow Sheffield residents then please send it to us and we will do our very best to feature it - we also offer reduced rates for charities and non profit organisations. We are self funding and completely independent so our mags rely on the support of local businesses to facilitate their existence and I would like to take this opportunity to thank firstly our existing advertisers for supporting us with this new issue and secondly the Sheffield based businesses who have taken the plunge and supported us - we hope you are pleased with the result! 8,000 copies of ‘Sheffield 1st’ are printed and delivered every month and will reach around 28,000 local residents - it will also be available to view online at www.sheffield1st.co.uk along with our other issues. If you are a local business looking for a cost effective and productive way to advertise your services, then please check out our very affordable prices on page 23 or give me a call for a friendly tailored solution to your advertising needs. (Full details of our delivery areas are available on our web site)

Don’t delay call today 01246 828378 / 828074 or text ‘advert’ to 07789 390124 and I will call you right back. Until next month...

Signs of Local Housing Recovery.. Signs of the UK housing market’s "meaningful recovery" are evident in the East Midlands town of Chesterfield according to Destination Chesterfield. Developer Miller Homes East Midlands has described Chesterfield as being “at the top of the wish list for many couples, families and individuals looking to buy.” Miller Homes is one of a number of developers currently building more than 200 new in the borough, with more planned on a 1.94 hectare site of a former school. In addition to new build, estate agents in the town are also reporting an increase in sales and instructions with a new agency opening in the town less than eight months ago to meet demand. Redbrik, which opened in Chesterfield in January 2013, reports a buoyant housing market, with as many as ‘three or four potential buyers making offers’ on some properties in the west side of town.

Paul Walters, associate director at Miller Homes East Midlands which is developing two, three and four bedroom houses at The Portlands, the site of the former Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club, said: “Since opening the sales centre we have had a phenomenal level of interest in the new development, reflecting the increasing buoyancy in the market.” Miller Homes is averaging one sale a week at The Portlands, with all properties having been purchased off plan ahead of the showhomes being opened. To further reinvigorate the local housing market, Chesterfield Borough Council recently put in place a Local Authority Mortgage Support Scheme to help first time buyers in Chesterfield get their foot on the property ladder.

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of ChesMark Ross, terfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of partner of Destination Chesterfield, said: “We are Redbrik, currently seeing significant investment in said: “We housing. economy and bring in more business and customers. The buoyant housing market has resulted in a great pool of talent for all types of business, from world leading specialist manufacturers and multi-national communications companies to retailers and distributors. Keen to support residents, investors and local business, the council has put in place a Local Plan which identifies the number of new homes it will need over the next 20 years. John Burrows added: “The current new build developments will go a long way to provide the homes we need for the people we expect to see living and working here, supporting business who choose to invest here by providing a ready pool of employees.” John Burrows, added: “We could have chosen to bunker down and ride out the recession, but we didn’t. We chose to be proactive and forge ahead with our marketing plans and this shows in the recent employment, tourism and retail figures.” Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high streets with unemployment decreasing by 0.5% during this time. Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.

September Gardening

September is generally a cooler, windier month than August and the days are noticeably getting shorter. While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of your hard work. It is also time start planning your spring-flowering displays. Get daffodils in by mid-September, along with fritillaries, crocuses and grape hyacinths. Tulip bulbs are best left until November. Don't miss out on ordering your container / barerooted fruit, ornamental trees and hedging in preparation for planting later.

As Migrant birds such as swallows and house martins will begin flying south for the winter so keep bird feeders and birdbaths topped up to

encourage more birds to visit your garden as autumn sets in. With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. The key to successful planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a great advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowering, in which case leave them). It is also important Keep your and well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year's buds develop well. Remember to remove the three D'S any thing that is DEAD, DISEASED, or

DECAYING on all your plants regardless of variety. If you need any advice or quality garden plants and products then visit us at Doncaster road langold, always happy to help.

25 new Ambassadors all set for Chesterfield Chesterfield has recruited 25 more willing volunteers to sing the praises of the town, bringing the total of ‘ambassadors’ to 125. The volunteers join the town’s Ambassador Scheme ahead of the influx of tourists over the summer. The new ambassadors include frontline staff from the town’s businesses, including restaurants, museums, banks and Chesterfield Borough council employees. They join local residents, traffic wardens and sales assistants to name but a few, who have previously signed up to the voluntary, unpaid scheme. Chesterfield Ambassadors is the brainchild of the town’s marketing campaign Destination Chesterfield, and is designed to ensure that all visitors to

the town have a great time here and leave with a positive impression. Dominic Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager explained: “We have marketed Chesterfield a as place to live, work and invest in during the last two years. Many businesses and people have chosen to locate here and this, coupled with an 11% increase in tourism, ensures that our Ambassadors play a vital role in helping market the town positively. The Ambassadors Scheme is about ensuring all visitors – whether tourists or here on business - leave with a positive opinion of Chesterfield and are excited, like we are, of our plans for the future.” The latest ambassadors recently

underwent training to ensure they were all equipped with the latest news, facts and figures about the town – from how many tiles are on the iconic church spire to information about the town’s regeneration plans alongside the importance of good customer service. Ambassadors then receive regular updates about the town on events, developments and local news. The two-hour training workshop took place at the Town Hall and was developed with Chesterfield Champion, Evolution Training. If you’re interested in becoming an ambassador, visit www.chesterfield.co.uk to find out more.

Rush Directed by Happy Days alumni Ron Howard comes a film based on the real life events that took place during the 1976 Formula 1 racing championship. The story follows the rivalry between British driver James Hunt and Austrian Niki Lauda. There’s car racing, womanising and cross words thrown around in the on-going competition between the two drivers. Then, after a catastrophic crash at the German Grand Prix in ’76 that almost claimed his life, Lauda returns to face Hunt in the pursuit of the World Championship in Japan. Some familiar faces with Hunt being played by Chris

He was featured in Inglourious Basterds and The Bourne Ultimatum. It was filmed on location in the UK and at the Nurburgring in Germany. With vintage and replicas of the original vehicles used as well it is sure going to look the part if nothing else.

About Time

)

A new bittersweet story from the king of the British Rom Com, Richard Curtis ( ). Although this may not be the conventional romantic love story we’re used to getting, we get a bit of sci-fi to boot. Don’t get me wrong, there is a love story involved but that isn’t the only focal point of the film. There is also time travel. It may seem a little different but it seems like it’ll work. It seems to be similar to The Time Traveller’s Wife kind of deal except from others being aware of the travelling. Strangely enough, this also stars Rachel McAdams as the female lead. The story begins with a 21 year old called Tim played by Domhnall Gleeson (

having another unsatisfying and lonely New Year’s Eve and being told by his father, Bill Nighy ( ) that the men in their family have the ability to time travel. After being given this information Tim decides to improve his life by getting a girlfriend. With lots of turns, complications and numerous attempts to get things right he does meet Mary played by McAdams (

). But Tim has to learn that even when you have the ability to change the course of your life, there will still be heartache and loss along the way.

R.I.P.D Now for something a little different. This film stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as partners on a police force that’s not what you usually see, because they’re dead. The title of the film and their division stands for the Rest In Peace Department. Their job is to police the bad souls that cause trouble in the afterlife. After Boston detective Nick Walter (Reynolds) is murdered, he’s recruited and put with Roy Pulsipher, a United States Marshal from the Wild West who’s also a veteran RIPD officer. As well as policing the undead, Walter also has to find the man who killed him. Kevin Bacon takes a Sheffield 1st

break from the EE Orange mobile adverts to also star, playing Reynolds former partner when he was alive. Bridges brings his usual laid-back, slow southern drawl voice which lends itself perfectly to his character of the rough-around-theedges cop, but dead. One to watch if you enjoy cop and crime films but are maybe looking for a little bit of a change.

ICONS

The Beatles Perhaps the most famous, commercially successful and critically acclaimed British rock band ever, The Beatles redirected the history of western popular culture and music. The style was rooted in skiffle and rock, but developed into an innovative, sophisticated and genre-busting musical idiom as the group’s songwriting skills, range and musical intelligence grew. Singles hit included , and , but The Beatles’ legacy was assured by a sequence of revolutionary albums. In their early days as a gifted, wisecracking rock-and-roll group, The Beatles revolutionized the sound and style of British popular music with their original and catchy synthesis of rock music, rhythm and blues. They first appeared in the clubs of Liverpool - their home city - and Hamburg. On the way, they lost two early band members - bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer, Pete Best. They acquired drummer, Ringo Starr, in 1962 to make up the Fab Four of fame and fable. Molded by manager Brian Epstein from 1962, they adopted their signature mop-head haircuts and collarless suit jackets and were signed to the EMI Parlophone lable by prescient music producer, George Martin. Thie debut , recorded in a single album session at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, became their first No. 1 hit. In total, 11 studio albums and 17 singles went on to reach the top spot in the British charts - an astonishing record. Beatlemania went global, when the band toured the USA in spring 1964 and they entered the movie world with their mock-documentary (1964) and its successors

(1965) and (1967). A succession of landmark albums followed. (1965) featured elements drawn from the contemporary US folk scene and went and from world music, notably in its use of the sitar, while (1966) further extended their range, from classical to psychedelic rock. The phenomenal concept album (1967) is regularly listed as one of the greatest albums of all time. A creative period of transcendental meditation at a retreat in India led to (1968, formally called ). However, it also increased personal tensions within the group, which became focused on John Lennon’s relationship with the artist, Yoko Ono. Two further acclaimed albums followed, (1969) and (1970), but in April 1970, Paul McCartney announced he was quitting the band and he filed for formal dissolution at the end of the year. All four members went on to make solo albums and McCartney developed a hugely successful post-Beatles career. In the years that followed the band’s dissolution, two tragic events happened. Lennon was killed in 1980 in New York City and George Harrison Died of cancer in 2001.
