The Right Choice How to Select a BUILDER or REMODELER
THE QUESTION consumers most frequently ask the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) is, â&#x20AC;&#x153;How do I select a qualified builder or remodeler?â&#x20AC;? To help you select a professional who can meet your building or remodeling needs, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has developed the following checklist:
Contact your local home builders association for the names of member builders and remodelers. TBA also has a list of builders who have earned the Construction Industry Professional (CIP) designation which means they have met high standards of experience, education and customer servVisit the website: ice. Permanent and Reputable Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.
Longevity Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.

Get a Contract
Check out the company's rating and if there have been any complaints filed with our local Better Business Bureau: www.bbb.org.
Make sure the builder/remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract will benefit both of you. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner manual as well.
Licensed and Insured Make sure the builder/remodeler has appropriate workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.
References Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previous customers. If they won't, beware. If they do, ask the customers if they would hire the builder/ remodeler again.
Quality of Workmanship Ask if you can see the builder/remodelers work, both completed and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials.
Communication Do you feel you can easily communicate with the builder/remodeler? Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home.
Priced Right Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!

We are not a one-size-fits-all generation, and what has worked for seniors in the past may not necessarily work for us in the future. We are a very physically active, mobile and influential generation. The idea of moving to a huge retirement facility as we age does not appeal to most of us. For this reason, the National Home Builders Association has created a course for builders, contractors, interior designers, architects and occupational therapists to become “Aging in Place Specialists.” This three-day, 18-hour course includes Marketing and Communication Strategies, Design/ Build Solutions for Aging and Accessibility and Business Management for Building Professionals. The course focuses on “Universal Design,” which defines a specific way of designing a home so that people of all ages, abilities and levels of health can enjoy the same home for a long time, ensuring the house will work for its residents as their needs change. Some aspects of “Universal Design” to make homes accessible to residents of every age include: • EACH HOME has no-step entry, so that no one needs stairs to get into the home or into the home’s main rooms. • THE MASTER BEDROOM, full bathroom, kitchen and living room are located on one floor. • WIDER DOORWAYS and hallways are designed to allow easy access from room to room.
• FLOORS, bathtubs and curbless showers are made with non-slip surfaces for safety and comfort. • MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING is built into every room so that both chair-bound and non-chair-bound residents never have to fumble for a light switch. When you like your home, your neighbors, your community, there is no reason to uproot yourself and move to another location, especially when you can make modifications to your home in order to “Age in Place.” Carole Butler, CAPS, an interior designer and active member of TBA and the Tallahassee community, is an expert in aging in place and one of more than 25 TBA members who have earned the Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) professional designation.

Changing times and changing seasons have largely impacted what we do with our homes and more importantly, our landscapes.
If you are a true do-it-yourselfer, designing your landscape can prove to be a daunting task. But don’t fret. To start, ask yourself what you expect to gain for your landscape: Do you want it to be formal? Organic? Full of color? A concise landscape plan will help you get a finished product you are proud of.
Now comes the fun part, planting your landscape! I recommend starting with the bed lines. Consider making lovely curves that encompass the trees and other spots where grass will not grow. Next, think about vertical elements — the trees or accent plants. Then, keep in mind focal points and views; as a general rule, the front door should be the main focal point from the street.
As we approach the fall season, keep in mind that it is one of the very best times to plant trees and shrubs. The cooler weather allows for an easier and less-stressful transition for your plants and yields better success than any other time of year.
Here in Tallahassee we have many dynamic fall elements to work with that other parts of the country do not.
The Fall Cassia is a fast-growing plant reaching heights of 10 feet and a showstopper with its cheerful yellow blooms. Confederate Roses are a woody perennial which also boast spectacular blooms.
You’ll see varying stages of change on one plant, giving you a multicolor effect. They open white, then fade to pink and finally red. Sasanqua camellias thrive in our area and, with a range of growth habits, you’ll find them growing low or taking on tree forms. Furthermore, Japanese Maples, Native Red Maples, Ginkgo and Tulip Poplar trees will give you the much sought-after change in foliage color.
Whatever you decide to do with your landscape always remember there is no harm in seeking professional help — our landscape designers can give you a plan or sketch that you can work from or install it for you. This may save you from mistakes and headaches.
