hile it may not snow in Florida, the weather change during traditional “winter” months can often times feel unbearable. A relief of heat for some Floridians but what about your home? How does your home react to 20 degree weather? Have you checked your irrigation system? Often times, first-time homebuyers and New Construction homeowners are not aware of the simple tricks and tips of maintaining their home during inclement cold weather. Here’s a short list of maintenance tips you can complete in advance of the cold:
Backflow Preventer A backflow preventer valve’s purpose is to prevent the water in your main water lines from flowing in a reverse direction and brining contaminants into your drinking water. The valve distributes sanitary water from the supply pipes to the water lines underneath your homes foundation. During cold weath-er, these water lines and pipes have the potential to freeze, leak or bust and could bring contaminated water into your main water supply line. The easiest way to protect your Backflow Preventer is to insulate it. If you need help with addition-al protection, contact your plumber or irrigation specialist to conduct an inspection.
Fireplace With wood-burning fireplaces, chimney fires are one of the top causes of most home fires.With fire places sitting idle most of the year, professionals recommend getting a comprehensive chimney inspection that reviews the fireplaces venting, flue, safety systems and more. It is im-portant to make sure that small animals and birds have not nested in your chimney. Clean out your fireplace of any leaves and debris. Stock up on firewood but do not store wood next to the exterior of your home. Keep it in a dry place. If you do not plan to use your fireplace, specialists recommend using a piece of fiberglass insulation as a cover to prevent cold air from filling your home.
