RETHINKING TRAFFORD
POMONA + TRAFFORD + STRETFORD
In the 20th century, the industry declined and housing deteriorated further into slums amongst the derelict factories. But 21st century Great Ancoats Street is rising again, with many of the great mills converted into apartments and offices. Developed by Manchester Life, a partnership between Manchester City Council and Manchester City FC owners Abu Dhabi United Group, since 2002, Ancoats and New Islington have been in a process of urban regeneration that has positioned itself as two of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in Manchester. But you may wonder, what are the stories behind the new Ancoats ‘urban village’? What’s happening with the consolidation of new communities and the one displaced? What about the lack of green spaces, safety and, transport integration? What do we think of this gentrified urban living space?

Introduction
1.1 TRAFFORD SITUATION?
To understand the situation in Trafford, this project began with the site
visit. The site visit was on the prime time and we found many problems, the road was full of traffic jams, the tram carriage was overcrowed, parking lots narrowed public roads, many buildings are derelict which is not being used in full
potential, demolished building waste occupied public land, and public green space is blocked by fencing. These show the current situation that Trafford is facing.
Furthermore, the research of Trafford found that the
northern area of Trafford is being covered by air pollution, such
as NO2, PM10, and PM2.5, which is produced from after-burnt
car engine can cause lung cancer to locals. The bottle-neck road in north Trafford causes daily traffic jams and concurrently
produces this air pollution concentration. Similarly, the few of green space in the area is not enough to purify air pollution for
locals. Therefore, these are the main problems which are
needed to be solved and the solutions can be the improve
of public transportation to reduce car and the increase of green space to purify air pollution.
1.2 SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY FOR TRAFFORD?
What is sustainable strategy for Trafford? Waiting for public fund
which may not be provided by the government or councils to start the
healing project for Trafford seems to be hopeless. Locals can enhance their
communities by their own resources. The resource that can be answer is the use of tourism potential in Trafford. Old Trafford is the main destination that
welcome daily tourists who are global football fans. Tourists travel to Trafford want to attend Manchester United FC and Cricket matches and visit the
stadiums but it seems that it is only one destination which attracts tourists.
Locals can use this potential of football fans to increase their locals tourist attraction to welcome people to tour around Trafford rather than just visit Old
Trafford and leave. This will rise locals’income and they can use them to make their sustainable communities.
Where is new tourist destination(s)? Looking through the potential
of Bridgewater canal network which links to 3 valuable places (1. Pomona
Island, 2. Old Trafford, and 3. Stretford) that have tourism potential to create
more destinations for tourism along canal corridor, which run in parallel with
A56 corridor.

Therefore, in the ne w tourism route, the plan is to strengthen the route from Football Stadium to Cricket Stadium, including removing or reconstructing a few buildings, creating new Bicycle Bridge, and using various elements applied in the route in order to achieve the concept, which is making the area more vibrant and people more willing to stay.
In the new route, some new plans and the square designs with theme elements connected by Bicycle B r i d ge we re c reate d , s o a s to strengthen the route and guide crowds moving.

3.2 Site Location The site is located in Old Trafford, England. It is adjacent to Manchester United Football Stadium, and Trafford Cricket Club is in the site. In the north there is River Irwell, which is called The Manchester Ship Canal. And the south is Gorse Hill including Trafford Park and a small part of Old Trafford as well. The site has two large supermarkets, Lidl and Tesco Extra. And there are a number of landmark buildings, such as Trafford Council, UA92, Trafford College, etc. The north and south boundaries are respectively railway and tram links, so the transportation is relatively convenient. It can be reached from Manchester center by X50,250,256 buses and several tram routes, which only takes about 30 minutes.

For first-time visitors, there are many landmarks in the area, and the boundaries, zoning, and road orientation of the site are obvious, so it is not easy to feel lost. But other than that, it doesn't leave much more impression. As a result, how to make people to build more deep impression and let them experience different feelings is important.

INSPIRATION “ Colorful Street ”
UA 92 Cricket Ground Tram Station
The resource of my inspiration of the old Trafford design
We walked along the street from the Tram Station the old Trafford football stadium, we have noticed many elements in yellow near the Tram Station when we went to the area of old Trafford for the first investigation, and the Tram Station was the starting point of our investigation. Moreover, we have discovered many elements in red when we walked closer to the football stadium which is the end point of our investigation. However, t h e m a i n co l o u r fo r t h e m i d d l e area between the two point was black. A thought of using colour as a connection of these two points appeared to mind.

3.9 COLORFUL AVENUE
VIEW OF THE CURRENT AVENUE.
The Warwick Road which connects the 2 iconic landmarks, the cricket stadium and the football stadium is imagined as a colorfull processional avenue by creating a desirable scenario for walkability and public activity. The colors of the avenue gives any person a sence of direction towards tram station or the foortball stadium. The elevated cycleway and low height .buildings shape the new urban landscape

3.10 MARKET
The Barlow road and Hornby road which are two parallel streets connected to Warwick Road has residences on both the sides and the main activity of the street is filled with vehicular roads and parking for this residence. The proposal aims to create an active street environment by converting the function of ground floor of these residence to commercial spaces like restaurants, bar, cafe, shops and souvenir shops for tourist. The marketplace which is the open space between the residences act as a multifunctional area which changes its function according to the requirement, during typical days the street is a pedestrian street and the marketplace acts as an outdoor seating for bars and restaurant, whereas during match or festival days the marketplace converts into an open-air market with stalls.

3.14 Drop Park
For this part, we mainly focus on how to show the beauty of the rain.
“ DROP PARK
Why did we consider to build a drop park?
The rainy day occur in the UK very frequently. And when we investigated old Trafford at the first time, not surprisingly, we met a rainy day.
During the rainy day, we found that the rain always bring a special atmosphere to the UK. Therefore, We are considering to introduce the elements of weather into our design to show the different scenery of old Trafford.

Ecological rainwater park: According to the typical local climate, the ecological rainwater park is designed to utilise the resource of rainwater. Moreover, using art installations to show the beauty of rain and bring the new landscape perception and visual perception to visitors.
Analysis of Ecologic Rainwater Collection and Utilization Elements
The inspiration of the symbolic rainwater contanier is from the football, the pentagonal and sexangle elements are taken to make the roof of this art decoration. The top of this decoration looks like an umbrella made by a tiled football in order to keep passengers dry and sound. The constructive material applied is glasses, allows visitors appreciate entire process of collecting rainwater.
Despite collecting the rainwater, ot h e r i n f ra st ra ct u re s s u c h a s a fountain and small art decorations are built to show the beauty o f ra i n w a t e r i n va r i o u s f o r m s . Meanwhile, these interesting art decorations can attract many visotors, and offer a entertainment area for residents living nearby.
