multiple translation poems Dolan Morgan These poems have been constructed via multiple translations in numerous languages. They each started as preexisting English language documents – such as websites, advertisements, and other poems, the ghosts of which still haunt the pieces – but they have been transformed into entirely novel works. plans Bella Dear They sat around a table on three sides, two men and a woman. In front of them the plans were laid out, smoothed out and held down at the corners by coffee cups. The fourth edge curled over irritatingly so that the second man held it down. They discussed the plans and as the debate heated, gestures were flung about accompanying their heavy and serious words. The

second man tried to participate, but his argument seemed stilted and his one free hand could not point and wave as effectively as the other two. Increasingly he withdrew from the argument and sat back in his chair. One hand stretched forward holding the corner of the plans down. The first man and the woman continued until furiously the man thumped his fist on the table clipping a cup and sending cool, thick liquid across the plans. Silence fell around the table as they watched the blue ink rise from the thin paper and mix with the coffee. ‘Disaster,’ the second man said and rose from the table. The woman leaned back in her seat and sighed angrily. Her eyes rolled to the ceiling. ‘We can get the back up plans.’ The first man said and left the room. The second man stood by the window, one hand pressing against the pane. ‘He should never have got involved.’ He said quietly. ‘He’s good. He knows what he’s talking about.’ She said. ‘Help me clean up.’

The others arrived not long after, with a fresh set of plans carried under their arms. Everyone sat down around the table. Fresh coffee was poured and the plans rolled out. The edges were held down with a book, a flowerpot, a sugar bowl and a heavy silver lighter. The group leaned forward over the plans and studied the complicated structures of lines and grids. Carefully written notes flowered the edges. ‘These look different,’ the woman said. ‘These aren’t the same plans.’ Everyone moved closer, their elbows jostling the edges of the table. There did seem to be some differences. Some areas of the plans looked less detailed, whereas others looked overly complicated. The two men tried to recall the original ruined plans perhaps she was wrong. The others threw looks of annoyance across their bent heads. Why had the two men and the woman been looking at the plans without them? ‘These are the only plans we have. Now.’ One of the others said under his breath. ‘We have to get the originals. These plans are out of date.’ The woman pointed, ‘this was changed, we agreed weeks ago.’ Her hand swept across the surface. ‘This has changed, this and this and this.’ She dismissed the plans with a wave of her hand and laughed harshly. ‘This can’t be done. We don’t have the right plans.’ Everyone looked away from the table and away from each other.
