2016-17 PROGRAMS

Thank you for your interest in Long Wharf Theatre’s education programs. In recent years, Long Wharf has reaffirmed our commitment to theatre education as a vital part of our mission and critical to the quality of life in our region. We have made major expansions of our programming, including adding more student matinee performances and adding a new program, the “Moments and Minutes” monologue competition, to our suite of offerings. If you are reading this brochure, then you are already one of the converted. You know that arts education can help develop 21st century workplace skills like public speaking, textual analysis, and collaborative problem solving in a way that is engaging and often fun. Yet, the study and practice of theatre is so much more. It is an opportunity for students to access some of the greatest literary works as they were meant to be experienced—performed, not read. Familiarity with great plays, whether it is Measure for Measure or Fences, not only rounds out a student’s education, but provides a platform on which he or she can explore what it means to be a human being. The empathy and understanding which can be generated from the study of drama may be its greatest benefit for our young people, and it is especially important in this time of division, alienation, and the isolation that social media can bring. Long Wharf sees its role as a community organization to combat this trend. We hope that you will see us as a partner to keep arts education available for students. We are so proud of our team in education, and believe that they can become an important resource for your work. It is our hope that you and your students will join the over 6,000 students and 200 classrooms with which we worked last year. Our teaching artists are dedicated to exploring the mind, body, and heart. We look forward to sharing this journey with you. Gordon Edelstein

I
have worked with the education branches of other theaters and I have found Long Wharf to be the most accessible, rewarding, and easy to work with. The workshops and video make it much easier to integrate the show into the curriculum. The workshop activities engage the critical thinking and intrapersonal skills that are essential in 21st century learning, so I know I am truly giving my students an enrichment experience—not a “presentation.” – Jessica Dwyer, Valley Regional High School

Meteor Shower by Steve Martin A WORLD PREMIERE A Co-Production with The Old Globe Directed by Gordon Edelstein September 28- October 23, 2016 On the Claire Tow Stage in the Newton Schenck III Theatre Corky and Norm are excited to host Gerald and Laura at their home in the valley outside Los Angeles to watch a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower. But as the stars come out and the conversation gets rolling, it becomes clear that Gerald and Laura might not be all that they appear to be. Over the course of a crazy, starlit dinner party, the wildly unexpected occurs. The couples begin to flirt and insanity reigns. Martin, using his trademark absurdist humor, bends the fluid nature of time and reality to create a surprising and unforgettably funny new play. Suggested Age Range: 13+ Curriculum Connections: Marriage and relationships, absurdism, human psychology, societal and cultural norms. Other People’s Money by Jerry Sterner Directed by Marc Bruni On the Claire Tow Stage in the Newton Schenck III Theatre November 23- December 18, 2016 Larry ‘The Liquidator’ Garfinkle is a donut-chomping, fast-talking Wall Street takeover artist, and if you are running a business, he’s the last person you want to darken your door. When he goes crazy over New England Wire and Cable’s undervalued stock, it’s up to Kate, a brilliant young lawyer, to stop him from gutting the company. Can she save her hometown’s venerable factory from a gleeful corporate shark? Or should she? Suggested Age Range: 13+ Curriculum Connections: Wall Street, the culture of Big Banks, money and power, economics, ethics.
Endgame by Samuel Beckett Directed By Gordon Edelstein January 4- February 5, 2017 On Stage II Brian Dennehy (Krapp’s Last Tape, Hughie, and Love Letters), among the greatest stage actors of this generation, stars in this once-in-a-lifetime theatrical event! Samuel Beckett’s Endgame is a 20th century comic masterpiece that explores the futility of human existence. Endgame takes place inside a bare room by the sea, where four characters—Hamm (a blind man), Clov (his servant), Nell and Nagg (pestering parents) —are stuck and awaiting their final days. Through the lenses of absurd characters, poetic dialogue and minimal use of set, we experience the bare core of humanity and poke fun as we consider life’s big questions such as “is there meaning, is there truth, is there reason in the chaos of life?” Suggested Age Range: 13+ Curriculum Connections: Theatre of the Absurd, Existentialism, Avant-garde, Minimalism, Modernism, Post Modernism, Vaudeville (Marx Brothers, Chaplin), World War I & II, Cold War, Philosophy (Camus, Sartre) 11AM Student Matinee: Thursday, January 19 In order to provide the best experience for you and your students, all schools booking tickets for this performance will be required to engage in our 2-day residency. Smart People by Lydia R. Diamond Directed By Desdemona Chiang On Stage II March 15- April 9, 2017 Brilliant, hilarious, and incisive, Smart People explores the deep questions of race and identity. On the eve of Obama’s first election, four intellectuals—a doctor, an actress, a psychologist, and a neurobiologist studying the human brain’s response to racial differences—find themselves entangled in a complex web of social and sexual politics. Everyone wants to be successful, to find love, and to feel as if they’ve made a positive impact on the world. In
the great tradition of Clybourne Park and Disgraced, Smart People asks the questions that don’t always get asked in public. Suggested Age Range: 15+ Curriculum Connections: Racial and gender politics, current events, sociology. 11AM Matinee Date: Thursday, April 6

David Kaplan is a chef’s chef, making beautiful, simple food of uncompromising quality in his lovely Union Square restaurant. But in the crowded, cutthroat and expensive Manhattan food scene, is that enough to survive and compete with the next big thing? Enter Sergio, an old friend, rival, and possible savior.
