ABOUT

Each summer, in a digital festival, Black Trans Women At The Center presents 3-5 new short plays by Black trans women offering distinct glimpses into the lived experiences of the Black trans community—creating an intersection of art and activism. This program is our most recent centering of creative work that challenges systems of oppression, as the theatre acknowledges the fact that when it comes to undoing racism and transphobia, in the words of Dane Figueroa Edidi: “a world free of oppression is possible, but not without Black trans people.” As part of the program, Black trans playwrights work closely with Dane Figueroa Edidi to develop 10-15 minute plays over several months—culminating in online readings every August.

They find freedom in multiple disciplines, welding culture and southern organizing principles to make liberation irresistible. Mickaela is a co-founder of Southern Fried Queer Pride, a 2018 Atlanta Pride Grand Marshal, an Auburn Seminaries Sojourner Truth Leadership Circle (2018 cohort) alumnus, and 2019 House of Pentacles Film Fellow. As lead organizer of a national transgender political coalition, she co-wrote The Trans Agenda for Liberation. Rising up from nothing young model, creative director, producer, and writer Adisa Steele has already planted her mark on the entertainment industry as an award-winning stage performer, renowned dancer, and choreographer; and currently making way as a promising model and writer—already proving that she has a unique artistic voice to share with the world. Learning from all the experiences of life both professional and personal, Adisa’s overemphasized, yet chillingly realistic, perspective of the world only enhances the already ingenious eye she brings to any project before her. Starting as just a dancer from the streets of Miami, she quickly found her way onto stages around the globe, touching people with her intense passion, discipline, and skill—quickly managing to make herself an undeniable force to be reckoned with. Gracing such stages as the Joyce Soho Theatre, El Portal Theatre, The Hollywood Bowl, as well as publications such as Vogue Italia and National Geographic Adisa’s career is just getting started.
