LONG WHARF THEATRE
1
ROM T E ARTISTIC DIR CTOR Welcome to DREAM HOU$E. Long Wharf Theatre has a rich history of producing bold, ambitious, and challenging new work for our audiences. It’s been said the American theatre has entered a kind of “golden age” of American playwriting with some of the most exciting new plays to emerge in recent years. These brilliant plays we put on our stages are taking on new resonances given the current state of our world; we are truly in uncharted territory. What can these stories teach us about how to live, how to love, and how to forgive? DREAM HOU$E, the exquisite new play by Eliana Pipes, joins that growing roster of the golden age. The collaboration of three theatre companies to bring this world premiere to life is testimony to Eliana’s gifts as a writer in our community. With DREAM HOU$E, Eliana is calling forth our ancestors to reflect on how we understand our legacies and how we reconcile with family histories that may or may not serve us. She is also putting forward a question that feels at the heart of the play: even in our deepest pains, can we find the pathway to reconciliation? A new play is only words on a page until a visionary director can “lift” these words, put all the pieces together, and bring us a story in time and space. Laurie Woolery, with a magnificent cast and creative team, has given us a production of great depth. Laurie believes deeply in the transformative power of theatre – I’m honored she is sharing her artistry with us. None of our work would be possible without the dedicated staff of Long Wharf Theatre. I thank them for their continued work of making our season one to remember. Thank you for being here,
Jacob G. Padrón
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We acknowledge that indigenous peoples and nations have for generations stewarded the lands and waterways of what we now call the state of Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land. We are standing on the unceded territory of the Paugussett, Quinnipiac, and Wappinger peoples. We remind ourselves that along with stolen land came stolen people. It is our responsibility to the future to know our past. 2

DREAM HOU$E
ROM T E PLAYWRIGHT my neighborhood used to be and who I used to be in it.
For me, DREAM HOU$E comes out of two inspirations. The first was reflecting on where I grew up, in a pocket of Los Angeles that was rapidly transforming in a way I didn’t have the words for as a child: gentrification. Then, when I was 13, my family sold our house and moved. On one hand, that move was good for my family; it changed our financial future for the better. On the other, moving constituted a kind of cultural loss that I didn’t understand at the time. We were participating in and profiting from that “changing neighborhood.” Developing this play was a way to consider the benefits and the losses of that move, the grief that I felt for what
The second inspiration came from moving into the professional theatre as a writer who is also a woman of color. I’m Black, white, and Puerto Rican, and found myself writing Black and Latinx characters for a field that does not always welcome those populations into their audience. I felt like I was being asked to put my cultural pain on display for money — and I wanted the money, I wanted to be in those spaces, and to have that platform. This play invited me to interrogate my complicity, what I had internalized about value and where it comes from, and where I feel the right to take up space. Thank you for coming out to share space with us tonight. In many ways, DREAM HOU$E is a play about space: the historical legacy of the land we occupy, the social spaces we move through, and also the space we choose to hold for each other. I hope that our show tonight will hold some space for you.

ABOUT THE SHOW PhD candidates Sanam and Ariel have spent the better part of the last decade exhaustively researching vanishing bee populations across the globe. Just as these close friends are about to publish a career-defining paper, Sanam stumbles upon an error in their calculations, which could cause catastrophic damage to their reputations, careers, and friendship. Now, Sanam is confronted with an impossible choice: look the other way or stand by her principles and accept the consequences? Queen is a provocative portrayal of brilliant women confronting inconvenient truths.
