This section highlights the colonial period by displaying a timeline of musicians’ major life events, either in school, or on stage, or at award-wining moments in the music sphere in Japan, as a tribute to their musical achievements. The timeline also shows when the music industry began in colonial Taiwan and when Japanese record companies were established to make and release recordings of Taiwanese music, and to sign up songwriters and artists. Furthermore, it introduces both Japanese scholars’ and Taiwanese musicians’ fieldwork documentations and sound recordings from local areas or throughout the island. These are all precious sources of great significance for reconstructing the history of Taiwanese music.
CHANG Fu-Hsing, the first Taiwanese musician to study in Japan, compiled Songs of the Indigenous from Shuishe, the earliest transcriptions of indigenous music made by the Han Chinese.

In a time when travelling abroad was hard and information from abroad was scarce, it was the great passion for music that drove Taiwanese musicians to make every effort to study music in Japan, either in school or with private tutors, or to develop a music career there. Through a range of historical items, this section presents how the rapport among musicians and life experiences are woven into their works, which have become a solid foundation for today’s music scene in Taiwan. Recordings of some classics made by established artists are also provided to be sung along, as everyone would do in live concerts.
‘The Peach Girl’, the promotional song for the film of the same name performed by Sûnsûn, became a massive hit.

Taiwanese popular music has long been a focal point in the Sinophone world. Popular music industry in Taiwan began in the Japanese colonial period, particularly in 1932 a decisive year when KAYANO Masajiro set up the A&R department in Taiwan Columbia Records, which gave a further boost to the production of popular songs. Many songwriters such as DENG Yu-Shian, WU Jin-Huai, YANG San-Lang, HSU Shih, WEN Hsia, HUNG Yi-Feng and CHI Li-Nan to name a few, once studied music or performed in Japan and have left behind a great number of classic works. Since the end of World War II Japanese music and audio-visual contents have been well-received in Taiwan, which steered more artists, such as Jimmy LIN, CHEN Fen-Lan, Teresa TENG, Judy ONGG and OU-YANG Fei-Fei, to foray into the Japanese music scene, and promote further musical exchange between Taiwan and Japan.

DENG Yu-Shian DENG taught at a primary school before he went to Japan to study music in 1929. After returning to Taiwan, with the rise of recording and broadcasting industries in colonial Taiwan, he started his music composition career in Bunseng Records where he wrote ‘Twatutia March’. He became a full-time songwriter in Columbia in 1933 and wrote the famous ‘Longing for Spring Breeze’, ‘Moonlit Night Sorrow’, ‘Rainy Night Flower’, ‘Shining with Happiness’ and ‘Momentary Pleasure in Verse’. With almost 100 songs left behind, he contended that artists should create works for the general public. During the Sino-Japanese War he went to Japan again in 1939 to seek better opportunities, but returned to Taiwan soon because of his daughter’s decease.

With the Western-style music education introduced in colonial Taiwan, the Taiwanese developed a penchant for music. However, as there were no institutions specialising in music education, those who would like to seek further training and development had to go to Japan. Established musicians, such as JIANG Wen-Ye, CHEN Si-Zhi, LÜ Quan-Sheng, KUO Chih-Yuan and HSIAO Tyzen, who studied Western classical music in Japan, could still construct their works on a solid Taiwanese ground with tender loving care for the land and the people. Others such as CHEN Si-Zhi, LÜ Quan-Sheng and SHEN Xue-Yong, as well as Anna Azusa FUJITA who has become a naturalized citizen in Taiwan, established good rapport with one another and devoted themselves to music education and promotion in Taiwan.

LÜ Quan-Sheng A concert he attended on a high school field trip to Tokyo inspired LÜ QuanSheng to study music. He began studying the piano, but later vocal music because of hand injuries, at Toyo Conservatory of Music (the predecessor of Tokyo College of Music) in 1936. He became a member of the Tokyo-Takarazuka Chorus and concurrently a guest singer of NHK after graduating from the Conservatory, and went on studying composition with NARITA Tamezō.
