INTERVIEW

time and absolutely loved it. I decided that one day I’d come back for a longer period of time to work and live in Spain. Ten years went by, living a comfortable life in Belgium. But my love for Spain never really died, nor did my wish to experience life in Spain and, finally, I took the big leap in 2007 and left my Belgian life behind. I have been living in Valencia since. What makes Valencia so special?

SUZANNE VOLLENBRONCK What brought you to Valencia? In 1997 I spent half a year in Alicante on an Erasmus scholarship. That was my first encounter with Spain. I immediately fell in love with the country, its atmosphere, its people, its food and its language. It was also in that year that I visited Valencia for the first

In the 2½ years that I have been living here, I have never met anyone who didn’t like Valencia. This comes as no surprise to me. This city has all the ingredients to enjoy life to the fullest. It is a big city but has almost a village-like feel to it. The city centre is so compact you can get everywhere on foot or by bike. The Mediterranean Sea and the mountains are right around the corner. I love strolling downtown on a quiet Sunday afternoon, watching the sunset in La Albufera, rollerblading around the Palau de la Música in the late afternoon while enjoying classical music from the Palau’s loudspeakers, or simply going out for some great tapas! What I love most about Valencia is its light: the sky

is almost always very bright and hardly ever dull and grey. How’s your Spanish after 2½ years? When I first arrived in Valencia I already spoke some Spanish, but it was extremely rusty because ten years had passed without really putting it to practice. As I was looking for a job as an English teacher, I met the staff of English Tower. When they told me they also offered Spanish classes, I decided to give it a go. I was especially interested in speaking the language, because I already had quite a solid base in grammar. The teachers are qualified and enthusiastic. What I liked about them is that they really took into account my wishes. I wanted to be able to understand and use informal language, and so the teachers taught me all kinds of useful expressions. It still is very funny to see the Spaniards look up in surprise when I blurt out some slangy saying.

Yes. 24/7 Valencia is to be found all over the city. In bars, restaurants, clubs, hostels and academies. We are being contacted by an increasing number of writers and photographers who would like to be part of the 24/7 Valencia team. The magazine’s popularity and strong following is helped by the fact that it well-distributed and a common catchphrase has become: “24/7 Valencia? It’s everywhere!” The magazine is now in its tenth year and it is the only guide to Valencia that is recommended by all of the international media. This includes Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Guardian Unlimited, Footprints, The Times, El País, CNN. com and many more! 24/7 Valencia is the real deal. We are the only Englishspeaking guide whose editor and team actually live in the city of Valencia! On the subject of authenticity, we have a wonderful restaurant of the month review of ‘L’Antiga Bodegueta’, a Valencianowned Spanish tapas bar in the heart of the old centre. Just a few steps away, you’ll find some heart-warming photographic shots of daily life in ‘Miradas del Mercado Central’. We have an exclusive interview with ‘Valencia Face’ Chris Wright, a longterm resident of the city, who has his

book of memoirs out this month. Quite a life! Talking of all things literary, we take a trip down to bohemian barrio of Ruzafa where Lolita Devine checks out one of the hippest café-bar bookshops in the city, Slaughterhouse librería y cafetería, in the ‘chill out’ section. In our feature article, David Rhead and José Marín delve into the past and present of Ruzafa, one of the most diverse and popular barrios in the city of Valencia. ‘24 Hour Party People’ takes a trip to Excuse Me!, one of the city’s coolest clubs in the centre of Ruzafa. Professional photographer Monica Navarro also has an exclusive collection of residents of Ruzafa. In Woman, Anita Darling gets promoted at the Bank and keeps an eye on her daily horoscope. RUZAFA. A garden of delights

The elegantly scruffy neighbourhood of Ruzafa was first incorporated into the city of Valencia about 130 years ago. Even in that time it has often been seen as being a bit off the beaten track. Now, however, while more central areas become increasingly franchised, sanitised and expensive, it’s Ruzafa which is fast cementing its place as one of the most popular neighbourhoods in the city for those looking for an enjoyably different night out.

Although, admittedly, it is not something that immediately springs to mind when entering the barrio through the pedestrian tunnel under the Gran Via de Germanias, Ruzafa or Russafa takes its name from an ancient Arabic word meaning something like ‘scented garden’. For visitors, ‘Ruzafa’ is the Spanish spelling and ‘Russafa’ is the Valencia spelling. Hixem (or Hisham), the great Omeya Caliph of Damascus, built a garden which he called Russafa between the Euphrates and the city of Palmyra in the early 8th century and

such gardens were built all over the Arab world as places of beauty and quiet around the palaces of the Moorish kings and princes. The area of Ruzafa in Valencia was a country retreat or ‘munya’ built around 796 for Prince Omeya Abd Allah al-Balansi whose lands extended into Catalonia and Murcia. In the 13th century, the Moorish poet al-Saqundi described the Valencia Ruzafa as one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Sadly, nowadays not even a stone remains from Ruzafa’s Moorish past. At the centre of the barrio is a square dominated by two buildings, the 15th century church of San Valero Obispo y San Vicente Martír and the recently garishly painted 1960s market building. They make up a typically Ruzafa juxtaposition of crumbling past grandeur and the ugly practicalities of modern life. According to tradition, this was the exact spot where the keys of the city were handed over to King Jaime by the defeated Moorish king Aben Zayyan after the re-conquest. It

was also the place where the last victim of the Inquisition in Valencia was burned at the stake in 1826. He was an unfortunate schoolteacher named Cayetano Ripoll whose only crime was a dangerously heretic passion for humanism, philanthropy and Rousseau. The scandal and indignation caused by his execution led in great part to the final dissolution of the Inquisition just a few years later. The Ruzafa we see today was mostly designed and built at the end of the 19th century after the neighbourhood became officially part of the city in 1877. The barrio is divided into two distinct areas. Between the market and the Avenida del Antiguo Reino is the posher end (the streets are wider and often lined with trees, the houses more elegant) which was built for the bourgeois children of rich merchants and those who’d made their cash from the railways. From the market down to the Estación del Norte train station is a distinctly more working-class area (very few trees, narrower streets and

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

more modest houses), which was originally built for the railway workers. It’s this part of Ruzafa which gives the area its personality and which has given life to an eclectic array of restaurants, bars, shops and night spots, with new ones springing up all the time. As one local barman pointed out, “Ruzafa is at that exciting place where the Carmen was in the ‘80s and ‘90s”. There’s a buzz and a sense of individuality without losing sight of the barrio’s essential feel. Bodega El Mercat on C/ del Cura Femenia, 2 is a restaurant which still keeps the feel and decoration of its previous incarnation as an old olive oil shop and the Ubik Café on C/ Literato Azorín, 13 is a spacious and cosmopolitan bookshop / bar with second-hand books to read and a children’s play area. Alongside the café-bar bookshops there is a wide range of entertainment and cuisine to choose from. Quality live jazz music can be enjoyed at Café Mercedes Jazz on C/ Sueca, 27. There are flamenco and salsa clubs, North African tea rooms, halal butchers, Chinese food shops, specialist guitar shops, a shop which sells only honey, vegetarian shops photos © Mónica Navarro - Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

and restaurants of every type. Hip night clubs like Excuse Me! on C/ dels Tomasos, 14 have moved to Ruzafa and provide an all-night party for clubbers with electro, space boogie, rock ’n’ roll and more. Highly popular bars like Rojo and Café Pessoa (both on Literato Azorín) have names that reflect their bohemian clientele. Sinpy Jo’s on C/ Cádiz, 43 is a British-run bar that is highly popular with both locals and expats. The name of the bar is a Spanish play on words that means without ‘posh people’ (sin pijos). The varied character of Ruzafa has made the area a popular place for a night out and, despite the fact that there are hardly any schools and it’s impossible to park, it is an increasingly popular place to find a flat. This part of town is characterised by a population mix of families and older people who’ve lived in the barrio all their lives, people moving into the barrio’s newly restored buildings, students, and (mostly) North African and Asian immigrants. Despite this potentially explosive cocktail of a traditional working- class area with an increasingly visible immigrant presence, Ruzafa has so far largely managed to avoid the problems and

tensions other similar neighbourhoods around Europe have suffered. This is partly due to good attitudes on both sides. The local mosque has gone out of its way on a number of occasions to cooperate with the community and local residents have strongly rejected any attempts by the far right to stir things up. Another factor might be the social position of many of the immigrants. One lifelong resident told us, “The non-Spanish population here, especially the North Africans, is for the most part very well integrated. There are no problems unless you look for them. Maybe it’s because many of the people who’ve come here already have established social networks, and have been able to set up businesses, open up shops and generally bring more life to the barrio”. Things may change in the future. There are fears that the inevitable gentrification of the area, accelerated by the long-planned Central Park development, will sap some of the barrio’s soul and may cause tension as lifelong residents and immigrants alike are forced out. Until that happens, do your best to enjoy Ruzafa’s scuffed, modern-day Valencia version of Prince Omeya Abd Allah’s garden of delights. David Rhead and José ‘Ruzafa born and bred’ Marín

FOOD

A Quail of a Time So here we are in May already, I feel like I’m in a ‘new year’ for ages, and then suddenly we’re nearly half-way through! I started my herb and veggie garden last weekend, or rather my pot garden, considering there’s no ground in my apartment in which to actually make a garden - but you know what I mean. Masses of tomato seedlings, parsley, basil, chives, mint, I just need to find some lovage which is proving difficult. It’s my favourite salad herb and I have to admit I didn’t discover it till my year in Scotland, but oh my! How delicious! Valencia’s pretty much back in full swing again, revving up for another blast of summer and I have to say I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. After a month of quiet hibernation post-Fallas, I’ve been really enjoying whiling my time away on the terraces again. I went to the Gaudí - Picasso exhibition at IVAM last week, it’s on till the end of June and well worth your while. And, I’m heading to the 10dB Festival in Burjassot in early May as well, loads of street theatre and a medieval market on the final weekend - always lots of tasty treats at those! I had some friends from southern Spain visit last week, it was so good to see them, we went to some of the ballet that was part of Dansa Valencia, which was beautiful. They brought some quail up from their farm, so we had a lovely supper on my terrace before heading out to my favourite bars on C/ Caballeros. In mortar and pestle, grind the preserved lemon, sumac, white peppercorns and garlic until you have a mushy paste. Add a small amount of olive oil to make a nice, thick consistency. Wash the quail inside and out and pat dry with paper towels. Now, using your hands, smother the quail with the spice paste, leaving a small amount in each cavity, but spreading over the outside of the birds as well - remember; it’s a

Quail with Moorish flavours and pan fried potatoes • Fresh quail (codorniz) - 1 or 2 per person • 1/4 piece of preserved lemon • 1 tsp sumac (zumaque) per quail • 2 tsp white peppercorns • 3 cloves garlic • Sea salt • 1 potato per person cut into small cubes • 4 cloves garlic, sliced thinly • 1 dried chilli, finely chopped

good hot oven is all you need and 30 minutes max. The potatoes should have finished frying by now, too, and be nice and golden brown and crispy on all sides. Warm some plates in the oven quickly and serve the quail - a whole bird, or two, per person with a pile of potatoes and your choice of veggies. Some sauce will have collected in the oven pan from the roasting quail, and this will be fine enough to spoon over each bird. A good Rioja will go nicely here, perhaps on a terrace with great company and you’re in for a great evening. Especially if you’re heading out to the ballet! And remember, you don’t have to be posh to chew on the bones - it’s the only way you’ll get a good feed! Until next month, buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

flavour, not a coating. Preheat your oven to a hot 190-200ºC. Meanwhile, melt a large knob of butter and a good tablespoon full of olive oil in a large skillet or fry pan. Add the potatoes to this and cook, stirring occasionally to turn each side that is frying. Keep the heat to medium low, so the potatoes are gently browning, but not burning too quickly. After 10-15 minutes, add the slices of garlic and chopped dried chilli, and a little more butter if necessary. Continue frying, stirring occasionally, while you put the quail in the oven. Put the quail in an oven dish that will fit them snugly. Roast them for 25-30 minutes, they need to be only just cooked, and then rest them for a few minutes while you organise a salad or steam some vegetables. The legs will stick out on the quail and the skin on the ankles will just begin to come back. It is okay if the quail are just a little bit pink, this is good - but you don’t want them too rare, or raw. A

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

L’ANTIGA BODEGUETA 1833 Fusion, Asian, Italian, Lebanese, French, Mediterranean – you name it, Valencia is beginning to offer it all at last, but the knockon effect is that it is getting harder to find good, typical home-cooked Spanish tapas. Last week D and I had a delightful meal in a modern and cosy little restaurant in the Barrio del Carmen. Well, officially it’s the Barrio Mercat but most of us think of this whole area as the Carmen, but there are several little barrios that make up the Centro Histórico and they all have their own byelaws. This is important because if this place had tried to open in the Carmen it probably would not have gotten permission because of its proximity to the next bar. Barrio Mercat is keen to keep the area alive by granting new licenses to businesses in its area. L’Antiga Bodegueta 1833 is just a little off Plaza Dr. Collado, going past the bike shop in the direction of Plaza Negrito - blink and you will miss it. The spelling of the L’Antiga Bodegueta 1833 is in Valenciano and the owner is Valencia born and bred, which reflects the authenticity of the place. The owner, Rafa, is charming and extremely enthusiastic, full of information (the Mercat bye-laws and the history of the area), with an obvious passion for his restaurant and, more importantly, his customers. The bar/

restaurant is only a little over a year old and, judging by the busy clientele who appeared to be locals on this Thursday night, everyone is very happy with the result. The restaurant is named L’Antiga Bodegueta 1833 because when the owners were restoring the building, they found an old wine bottle with the date 1833 on the label and it was known to be a bodega for the area around that time. An added advantage is an outside (covered) terrace behind the restaurant in a quiet and shaded street. What better way to eat good food than al fresco! The menu is chalked each day on a large blackboard and consists of probably every tapa you can think of at excellent prices, 3€ up to 7€ for very generous portions. The tapas change according to what’s fresh at the market (they couldn’t be closer to the Mercado Central!). We sampled a good assortment: patatas bravas (small crispy potatoes with a tomato hot sauce and garlic mayonnaise) which were crispy and perfect, verduras a la plancha (griddled vegetables; onion, mushrooms, finely sliced artichokes, crispy and lovely, tasty olive oily peppers), puntillas (little battered baby squid) and langostines a la plancha (delicious, perfectly griddled huge prawns). We washed the food down with a lively red from Utiel-Requena. We never do the desserts justice (we never leave enough room!) but we did enjoy the huge portion of chocolate cake drowned in chocolate sauce! Every weekday Rafa’s mother cooks a typical Valencia dish for lunch. This could

be one of a variety of dishes; arroz al horno (rice with meat, morcilla and chick peas cooked in the oven), paella (usually Valencian with chicken and rabbit), fideuá (a paella type of fish and seafood pasta), albóndigas (meatballs), etc. - all home cooked from the freshest of ingredients in her own kitchen. This is offered as a menú del día (the menu of the day) at 8 euros including salad and a drink - good honest home cooking at a great price - but get there early, because once the portions she makes are gone, that’s it for the day! At weekends, both Saturday and Sunday lunchtime, the Bodegueta offers paella, salad and a drink for 6€ a head - fantastic value! Two could eat very well for 15€ a head and there is a good selection of wellpriced wines. Pop in for a drink and a tapa or stay and have a very affordable delicious feast! Value like this is getting harder to find in the city. Tim Birch

SLAUGHTERHOUSE LIBRERÍA Y CAFETERÍA Think Brick Lane, London, checked shirts, rough stone and mosaic floors and off-white walls, beautiful art books, think Apple Mac, infusions and beers, think loved and thumbed books, arty people and familiar faces. Think SLAUGHTERHOUSE, librería y cafetería. Opened in September 2009, in the heart of the up-and-coming bohemian barrio of Ruzafa. Slaughterhouse is a trendy, homey coffee and book shop that is most popular with the trendiest and artiest 30 to 40-year-old Valencianos. Jacobo, an artist, Ramón, a chemist, and Jaime, a philologist, are the brains behind this charming little hangout and the story behind the name is just as enchanting. in another bookshop/cafe in Ruzafa, they kept coming across some pretty awful books by an author called Slaughter who was big in the ‘60s and it became their in-joke. At the time they were all rereading the infamous Kurt Vonnegut novel ‘Slaughterhouse Five’ and when they discovered this old butchers shop, the name for their new venture was nothing but obvious. You can follow their journey from butchers to bookshop in the series on their website made by the filmmaker Pau Fenollosa, some amusing episodes now in their second season. Open every day except Monday mornings, you can relax and enjoy a coffee or a beer over a book, or just pop in to see the exhibitions they have and change every month, see the agenda on

their website, or just to buy a book as all books on display are for sale. They also hold wine tasting nights, acoustic music evenings, readings and lectures. Well worth a swing by. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW out of business. So I decided that if I was going to be unsuccessful, l might as well do it somewhere warm. Why did you choose Spain? Well I knew Costa Brava since the late 1950s and into the ‘60s, in particular Tossa de Mar. At that time the atmosphere grew on you. Sunshine, beach, great parties and fantastic music. The Beatles had made their debut in the UK and Spain had Johnny and Charlie with ‘La Yenka’, Los Bravos with ‘Black is Black’. Then there were Edie Gorme and Los Panchos. All together with flamenco and rumbas it was magic. You love music? Couldn’t live without it. All types right across the board. Pop, big band, jazz. You name it. I still play guitar, sing country & western, oldies and blues numbers in the Abastos neighbourhood of Valencia.

VALENCIA FACE CHRIS WRIGHT

And then you came to Valencia?

So, Chris, originally?

where

are

you

from

Well, I was born and grew up in Leicester UK until National Service committed me to the RAF for 3 years. Then, as my father had been a ‘bobby’ all his life, I decided to join the Exeter city police in Devon. Only it didn’t work. I wasn’t fitted out for it. This became obvious when I mistakenly stopped a police car that was chasing some robbers by smashing the windscreen with my truncheon. And after that? I tried various jobs like trainee management with a well-known chain store and after that a pharmaceutical representative in the Surrey area, which I enjoyed tremendously. Finally in an attempt at something different I took on a Northamptonshire country pub. Again not really successful, my handicap being a depressed basset hound, a neurotic donkey, an oversexed cockerel and a delinquent goat, all contriving to put me Contact Chris Wright - Mobile: 607 190 266

Actually no. Cullera was where I arrived first and it was there that I set up the first pub in the region. There were no licenses for ‘Pubs’ so they gave me a ‘Cafeteria’ license and said I could name it a pub… whatever that was. Was it a success? Not the first week. Nobody came in so I started what was probably the first ‘Happy Hour’ in the region. We were packed every night. Even today occasionally people will stop me in the street and say, “Hi, Mr. Happy Hour”. After all these years. Amazing, really. Then you moved into Valencia? Yes, and rented some wonderful premises for what was to be ‘El Gran Desastre Inglés’. And it certainly turned out to be a disaster. Problems over ownership of the premises made it impossible to even complete the conversion. What did you do? Went into agency work like jewellery, ceramics, porcelain, toys and even onions. Yes, would you believe it - even onions! After that, together with a friend,

I set up a company manufacturing golf course maintenance equipment which gave me the opportunity to travel all over Spain. Regarding your autobiography, why the title, ‘The Spanish Cheese ‘Sanwish’ Without Bread’? Well, years back I went into the Barrachina cafeteria (long since gone) in the centre of Valencia and there was a sign which read, ‘SANWISHES’. I took this to mean that the humble English ‘sandwich’ had arrived so I ordered a cheese sandwich. The waiter then asked if I required bread with it. I said, “No” just to see what would happen. After several trips to the kitchen he returned with two plates, one with cheese and the other ham, and told me to work it out myself! There are many such incidents in your book and many characters as well. That’s true. My autobiography is even dedicated to Doris Wilson, a brave character from Bermondsey I neither knew nor met but whose memoirs I read. When I found out about her, I was convinced that she was worth recognition, albeit posthumously. Reggie Bowler was another character and wonderful raconteur. He knew the author Ernest Hemingway, both in Africa and Valencia. In fact, they were both banned from what was the Hotel Metropol in front of the bullring. Continuing the fiesta which had started at the La Pepica restaurant on the beach, they squirted the hotel customers, including the mayor, with gin-filled water pistols. Other characters in the book include El Colorado, Dirty Harry, El Zorro, the X-File lady and many others. When and available?

where

is

the

book

Available this month, it will be on sale through www.amazon.co.uk, www. waterstones.com as well as www. authorhouse.com. The book launching will probably take place on Friday, 28 May in the Abastos neighbourhood of Valencia around midday. Finally, for those who would like to know more about authentic Spanish characters together with notes on original places, please note that my website is www. thespanishcheesesanwish.com. VALENCIA FOOTBALL David Villa

YOU W I N SO M E , YOU LOS E SO M E This is getting ever more difficult to put together each month as Valencia put us through our own Groundhog Day. They win a few games, play well, then lose a few games playing like donkeys, and it has been like that all season. Mistakes are not learned from and points are dropped as a consequence, despite which the Chés will finish third and claim the final place for direct qualification for next season’s Champions League. There is nothing new in the fact, either, that referees have influenced Valencia’s season and, in particular, the official who blew his whistle (or not) when the team travelled to play Atlético de Madrid in the return leg of the ex-UEFA Europa League. Valencia were not brilliant but deserved to win, the fact that everyone in the world saw a clear-cut penalty in the Chés favour, after Zigić literally had the shirt torn from his back in the dying seconds was not awarded, meant that the ‘blanc i negres’ were eliminated and were denied a semifinal against Rafa

Benítez’s Liverpool. Valencia also could have had another penalty for a handball earlier in the game but this does not excuse the cruel reality that VCF lost the tie after their Chaplinesque defending in the first leg in Mestalla. Incidentally, the loss could be the final nail in the coffin for Unai Emery, whose contract renewal is still up in the air. Things got worse in the next league match for the young Basque manager as Mallorca ran out 3-2 winners in a game where Emery decided to rest Villa and Silva, and gave opportunities to Zigić and Domínguez which they failed to seize. Valencia were soon 2-0 down and the match was effectively over. Young Manuel Fernandes had a cracking game in midfield, he scored an own goal and then got sent off (one to tell your mates about) but the most disturbing moment was when Emery decided to take off Éver Banega. The young Argentinian stormed off, refusing to shake hands with his manager and actually barging into him, accidentally on purpose, which led to Emery giving him what for in his ear. Banega apologised immediately after the game, but the lack of respect was all too evident and is a result of the manager’s mistaken tactic of too much ‘buen rollo’. The next game in Mestalla witnessed some ‘novedades’, Vicente returned to

the starting line up after more than a year and Silva got stuck in and scored a brace. Valencia began to look like the side we kind of vaguely remember and the final 2-0 victory was a fair reflexion of the Chés superiority over Athletic Bilbao. Hopes were raised for the next game against the nation’s favourites, Real Madrid. This match served to exemplify Valencia’s unpredictability. The manager again decided to break up a winning formula where, in the previous victory, he had used Vicente and Joaquín to attack the goal line, he brought back Mata and Pablo who tend to get drawn more into the centre. Unfortunately when he realised this and brought on the two more experienced players, the match was all but over. Apart from yet another tactical error, the team lacked motivation, ‘chispa’ and ‘ganas’. It was excruciating to watch and listen to a game where Valencia seemingly didn’t try. The team’s performance was simply not good enough for the majority of their fans who quite bluntly hate Real Madrid, and many a TV and radio would have been left switched off in the Communidad Valenciana for at least a day after the loss. Deportivo La Coruña came to Mestalla next and as Emery had a brainwave and selected Joaquín and Vicente to start against the Galicians, Valencia won. © 24/7 Valencia 2010

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 Villa’s 15th consecutive successful spot kick was enough to ensure the three points but the two old-school wingers made the difference. The manger stuck with the winning formula in a different formation against Espanyol, who have been in awesome form in the Montjuic stadium. After sixty minutes, it was difficult to see how Valencia were going to break down the Catalan team until Zigić replaced Villa. Vicente then did what he does best, getting to the byline and crossing the ball and the giant Serb does what he does best and that is scoring from crosses, ‘seemples’! No rocket science required, no blackboard, no complicated formation

El maestro

patterns to learn, just a simple “get to the line, cross it for the big lad and he’ll nod it in”. Football in all its simplicity, something we see so rarely these days with Valencia as some days they seem to want to walk the ball into the net. Two home games against Xerez and Tenerife with a short trip away to Villarreal will bring the season to a close and will confirm third spot for ‘nostre Valencia’ which will probably not be enough to see Unai Emery continue as manager. As previously stated, this would be an error if the club cannot find a suitable replacement, Manzano not being a suitable replacement. Rumours have surfaced that maybe the club will sign

ex-player Mauricio Pellegrino (currently at Liverpool) as the next gaffer, but that could be quite risky. Saying that, the last time the club lost its best players and brought in an unknown manager, they won the league, so we’ll just have to wait and see. By the way did anyone see Wigan Athletic’s fight back against the mighty Arsenal? Now that’s what I call football.

CLUBLAND Finally the spring is upon us, with the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer that only means one thing……. Terrace openings, summer clubs and boat parties where the hordes of partygoers start to move from the centre of the city to the port and Malvarrosa Beach to party under the stars and watch the amazing sun rise over the sea in the mornings. Not forgetting all the other things going on around the city in the many clubs and bars, you are bound to find something to suit all music tastes and I hope to cover as many of them here as possible. Las Ánimas Puerto (Paseo de Neptuno) finally open the stairs to their roof terrace on 15th of May with a capacity of around 2,500 people and two areas. This place has something for everyone with views over the port and everyone dressed to impress with impressive VIP areas. Also on the 8th, Umbracle (Av. del Saler, 5) open their doors for the summer in the City of Arts and Science, go check this place out for the wow factor, seeing is believing here! (www.grupolasanimas. com), (www.umbracleterraza.com) Staying in the port area before we party at Las, Estrella Damm Club (Edificio Veles e Vents, Port America’s Cup) also officially open their terrace on the 15th of May. This bar has seen international DJs such as Jimpster, Daniel Kyo and recently David Durango. Catch me there DJing on the night with Nasty Cube and good friend Fabian Dresens from 22.00h – 3.30h. You will fall in love with this bar offering the best views over the port and watching the sun set over this amazing city before hitting Las Ánimas next to see the sun rise!! Estrella is open every day from midday until late throughout the summer on the first floor of the Veles e Vents building in the port. (www. estrelladammclub.com) If you love the life on the open water as well as good music and fun people then you will be pleased to know that Valencia caters for you. Starting on the 8th, Valencia Boat Parties start again on their 24-metre catamaran. This boat holds 100 party-goers and sets sail with food, drinks and DJs. Catch the sunset over Valencia then party into the night with your new friends. Tickets are all inclusive of food and drink and you can contact me or VBP direct for more information and prices. (www.valenciaboatparty.com)

So far we have been to sea, enjoyed the sun and terraces in the port, but now we’re looking for something alternative without having to travel too far. Five minutes from the port you will find LA3 (La Tres, C/ Padre Porta, 2). This club is a converted theatre and have three rooms bringing you a great mix of underground music and bands. The main room you will get to hear the best indie, pop, indietronica and electroclash in the city and upstairs for all you house heads, party away with resident DJ Pablo Cebrián. This month sees WePlayCDs from London tearing up the main room on the 1st and also check out the 14th early for some live music before Dorian & Zoe hit the decks. Also another big night for Nasty Cube upstairs on the 28th with their Berliner night with AR9 and Vlad Danieli. (www. la3club.com) If you are lover of house and want to hear great music in what I feel has the best sound system in Valencia, Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) are still attracting a great crowd and international attention. Only last month saw London-based party Gifted bringing over 80 people from London and Barcelona to the club and the feedback was amazing! This month the must-sees are Tuccillo on the 14th and one of my favourite producers of the minute, Sebastian Davidson, on the 28th.. (www.myspace.com/miniclubvlc) Excuse Me! (C/ del Tomasos, 14) in Ruzafa have just refurbished their venue famous for strong international DJs playing a unique sound of space disco. They celebrate the birthday of their sister bar Flow (Plaza Honduras, 35) on the 14th with a special guest from London and supported by Nacho Marco who is a regular face in Valencia and now working with Pacha record label producing and remixing some great music that you will hear this year!! Also I recommend the 21st with Peter Herbert from the UK. (www.myspace.com/excusemeclub) For all you lovers of drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep and jungle, Street Plan have been working hard to bring you the best upfront DJs and MCs to the city and have a great line-up for May. The 7th sees them in LA3 with a special showcase of all their music and on the 13th they will be at Turmix (C/ Dr. Chiarri, 8), just off C/ Alta in the Barrio del Carmen, for a night of pure dubstep. If you are looking for some R&B and hip-hop then you need to visit Soul at

Gandhara (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 225) just off Malvarrosa Beach every Saturday night. DJ Cosy O and special guests keep this place moving with their upfront style of music. Also catch Cosy O at Las Ánimas on Friday nights. (www. soulvalencia.com) If you are in the old city centre of the Barrio del Carmen, then you have to check out two venues, Radio City and Music Box, that go hand-in-hand and offer great music right in the heart of the Carmen. Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) offer a range of different music, with live flamenco on Tuesday, eclectic music on Thursdays and then the weekend with DJs keeping the crowd moving. Finish your night off in Music Box (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 16) the late night venue in the Carmen open until 6.00h. The 13th sees Valencia’s DJ Soak who is Spain’s DMC Scratch Champion DJ and only 17 years old!! They will also have a Depeche Mode Party on the 22nd, and my good friend Falomir with play on the 28th. (www. radiocityvalencia.com), (www.myspace. com/themusicboxclub) Finally we have a secret to let you know about in the Carmen. A place where you drink for free, eat for free and enjoy new activities every month. This is a members - only club and is open from Monday to Friday, 11.00h – 22.30h. If you want to check out what this is all about, contact me for more information. This is a great venue for birthdays and if you ask nicely they will throw in a cake for you. If you want to know more, contact iNsound to become a member and to get the address. Also don’t forget that if you want to take advantage of good deals, Valencia Ocio offer membership cards for discounts across the city to clubs, bars and restaurants to make that extra saving so you can save up to enjoy all the events and parties I have mentioned. Let them know you found the information first at 24/7 Valencia. (www.valenciaocio.com) Check out my blog for any information I find useful in the city and for any questions, comments, recommendations, help or even guest lists to clubs, email info@insound.es. As always see you on the dance floor!!

BARRIO DE E L C A B A N YA L

‘Photography is a powerful art form, capable of stopping time, provoking emotions and transmitting ideas. An art that the great French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson defined as “to put the eye, mind and heart in the same line of vision”. An apparently simple equation that the photographer Victor Aranda Garcia tries to resolve with a camera in each of his photos. A lover of the direct shot, without photographic treatments, Victor continues to cultivate the art of traditional black and white photography. However, for his professional work he prefers the versatility of digital. He has participated in the International Biennial of Athens (2003) and Mexico (2008), winning various photography prizes. You will currently find exhibitions of his work in La Cuina de Pilar (Méndez Nuñez, 36) in Zona Puerto and Studio Vintage (Purísima, 8) in Zona Carmen.’

WOMAN

Dear reader, I hereby solemnly promise over the next 1000 words or so, give or take, not to make a single negative comment about anything: I swear to be either super happy and joyous and emotional or to give the facts straight up with no depressing undertones. I feel that the year 2010 and I have got off to a bad start, and it’s time I was grateful for my lot and stopped whining, as I am the first person to hate a whingebag, and I really do not have much to moan about anyway, if you look at things from my current post-day-inthe-sun, perhaps a little wine-induced positive and cheery perspective on life I am enjoying right at this very moment in time. The truth is, I have lots to be excited about this month, and can feel the winds of change blowing my way, as my free online horoscope so rightly predicted only just the other day. Sometimes I like to read my horoscope and ponder on just how great the chances are its predictions are right on track today not only for me but all the other trillions of Aquarius out there, which must be impossible, really. The good thing about horoscopes is that they are absolutely completely subject to one’s own personal interpretation anyway, and where “Take the leap! Make that investment” may mean I run out and buy that pair of Chanel fingerless biker gloves which will not only make me look like a white Rihanna but will be something I can hand down to my future granddaughters to treasure/ wear/sell on E-Bay, for Mr. Bloggs in his skyscraper office it may be the sign he’s Photo Manu Fernández. wine for hours (Mercadona’s sweet L’Antigón - I’m telling you, you just can’t beat it, and at 95 cents a bottle it’s our best kept secret!). The perfect way to spend a Sunday, winding down after a stressful week and crazy weekend before back to work, and the company could not have been better.

been waiting for to buy those hundred shares in a pharmaceutical company/ tobacco brand/Microsoft after all. Just ten minutes after reading the similarly ambiguous statement about big changes in my near future, my Boss at the Bank called in me into her office to offer me a new position (with a teensy bit more money offered up to give me an incentive to bite the bullet and say “Yes! Winds of Change, blow my way”!), so now I’m a little more important and finally feel valued, indispensable, and that all my hard work was recognised at long, long last (really want to slot a Fast Show-esque phrase in, which is nice in there, but don’t want to come off as sarcastic, so will just think it). Positive personal happening no. 1. I now can’t wait to channel my inner Melanie Griffith in ‘Working Girl’ and don a shoulder padded suit to strut around the offices I think I cannot express enough in words just how happy this winter has made me sartorially, I have been dying for an ‘80s comeback for years and have put my vintage Karen Millen shoulder pads, a gift from my uber-fashionable mother, to good use in all manner of jackets, tops and dresses. The winds of change seem to be blowing a little breeze into my love life too, after a rather rocky start at the beginning of the year with a sweet boy who unfortunately turned out a little sour. I have now met a delightful young man who has actually whisked me off for a picnic today, with Lolita and her boy of the moment, and we lounged on grass and rolled in the sun and drank cheap white

Talking of wine, and new man, I could not have picked a worse time to introduce said man to my wacky friends than just after we’d spent the whole day at the Feria del Vino. Several extra glasses than the 10-euro-ticket’s worth later, added to copious amounts of sausage and ham and cheese meant we were rather the worse for wear by the time we staggered back to El Carmen, though I think if he still wants to see me after meeting Team Anita it’s a pretty positive sign. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but it was the first wine fair I’d been to, and I loved it, even though it was a Saturday and the busiest day there - I’m talking half an hour’s queue for a bit of Manchego. We even did a wine tasting (for the free tasting, naturally) and I fell in love with the little old man giving the speech, much to my friends’ amusement and bewilderment, though his daughter, pouring the glasses, had obviously had just a little too much and dripped on my trainers - its lucky I was going for a dirty grungy look that day or I may have had to start a little riot! The month of May, traditionally associated with Spring and the weather warming up and all that jazz, looks like it may be as drizzly and grey as February was, but at least we don’t have volcanoes to worry about in Valencia just yet. Two of my friends from The Bank were in a secret relationship and jetted off to Amsterdam on their first romantic minibreak! Three days of tulips, bicycles and dams later and unfortunately for them, Eyjafjallajökull erupted and they had to stay for five more days- it was hard keeping things secret then, I tell you! Being completely selfish here, I’m glad the cat got out of the bag, to be honest! It was getting hard not to talk about them as a couple any more!! I’ll tell you one thing though, never in my lifetime did I think I’d be able to answer the phone and say “Oh, I’m afraid so-and-so isn’t in today, she got held up by a volcano”! The delights of 2010, I say!

Let’s Have a Safe Ride (Checking our bike after the winter) The sun is shining again after a long rainy winter, unusual for the Valencia area. And now everybody wants to ride their bicycles again… it’s time to check our machines! Talking about safety with our bicycles, the most important factors are the brakes and the wheels. As with all vehicles, (cars, motorbikes, etc.) the state of the wheels is fundamental, being the part that comes into contact with the ground. And obviously, it’s the brakes that control whether, and in what way, you come to a halt. Consider the wheels first. “I keep getting punctures, but look, the wheel is almost new. The pattern hasn’t rubbed away at all.” This is something we’ve heard a few times now. And the customer, of course, is right. The tread (the raised pattern in the surface of the rubber) is still clearly there, but it’s not the most important aspect of a wheel. A tyre has a limited shelf life. For that reason, when you buy a bike, it’s important to feel the rubber, and make sure that it still has a ‘corky’ or slightly spongy texture, and that there are no cracks in the surface. These same telltale signs indicate that it’s time to change your wheels, whether you’ve worn away the tread or not. Stick a fingernail into the flesh of the tyre; if the mark stays there, and you can feel the sponginess, the wheel is still okay. It you see that there are cracks in the tyres; it’s definitely time to change them. A wheel in bad condition will not stick to the ground well, and has a much higher probability of getting a puncture. The rubber of a tyre has a maximum life expectancy of about two or three years when you cycle every day in the city.

And when it goes, it goes rapidly, like bread – from spongy to rock-hard. If you think about the difference between wearing rubber-soled shoes and hard soles on a slippery surface, you know the difference it makes. If the texture of your tyres is ok, you’re halfway safe. There are also the brakes to consider. Customers say the same things about their brake pads, “There’s still a lot left there…” But it’s the same story as with the wheels. The brakes get old, whether or not the bike sees daily action or lives in the garage collecting dust. The material from which they are made erodes at the same rate, crystallises, and loses 80% of the braking power. It’s also important to make sure the cables are in good condition. These are normally made of steel, and the majority of cables need to be changed at least once a year. Although these days, cables made of stainless steel with Teflon casing are available, they are much more expensive, but they last four or five times longer. Think about where you put your lock on your bike while you’re riding it. You can easily cause unnecessary wear and tear by attaching it to the bike in a place where it rubs against the cables. One last fundamental point, talking about braking power, is the contact between the brake pad and the rim of the wheel. If and when you change a wheel, make sure it’s well fitted, and that the length of the brake pad touches the metal rim of the wheel. If the rim is bent, or the distance of the brake pads is wrong, the brake system won’t work properly. With the disc brakes systems, you need to check that the discs are not bent, the condition of the pads and, another important point, the condition of the brake fluid (it has to be changed every two years or every 10,000 kms).
