CLAUDIA BAIRD HOYOS Claudia is a 16-year-old student whose mother is Spanish and father is Scottish. She enjoys walking round Valencia and discovering little interesting places in her city. What’s the Valencia?

I’m leaving next year as I got a scholarship for an international school in Bosnia but I’m 100% sure I’ll come back. This is my home and I love its streets and its people too much to leave it. What do you do when you’re not studying?

Obviously I have it easier than most Spanish people but even so, this year I’ve been going to classes at English Tower to get a certificate to prove my level of English. I’ve done my CAE and passed with an A so that’s that done. I’m glad I chose English Tower because not only my classmates but also the teacher and even the receptionist were really welcoming.

One of my main commitments is to my rugby team. Yes, I am a girl and yes, I play rugby. We train at the university so I’ve got to know a bit of that international and positive atmosphere before I should have. We play the matches at the riverbed so if one day you’re walking by and see

CÁNOVAS A MONUMENT TO ITSELF

Building started on what we now call Cánovas in 1912. It was part of the turn of the century ‘Ensanche’ or suburban expansion of the city propelled by the profits and needs of the newly rich upper middle class industrialists and traders in rice and oranges who wished to make their mark on the city and create a lasting monument to themselves.

named after the formidable conservative politician who was behind the constitution of 1876. Cánovas alternated power in the late nineteenth century with his liberal counterpart Sagasta in much the same way as Gladstone and Disraeli did in Victorian Britain. In 1897 (conforming to the fashion of the day), he was assassinated by an Italian anarchist.

This second phase of the development, designed by Francisco Mora and Vicente Pichó, stretched Valencia southwards from the Gran Vía and down from the river to Ruzafa. A series of tree-lined streets with elegant Modernist and Austrian Secessionist style houses were seen as a perfect home for the new tophatted and bewhiskered masters of Valencia and the area has never really lost its air of celebration of upwardly mobile sniffy bourgeois swagger.

The square with two crescents on either side of the leafy Gran Vía serves the dual purpose of being flashy but at the same time closed-off and exclusive, seemingly telling the city’s lower orders, “You’ll never be one of us but you can come and admire us”. On the corner of the right hand crescent, as you look from the river is the famous modernist Edificio Chapa (1913) with its showy corner galleries and wave design rooftop.

The centrepiece is the square which gives the barrio its name, the Plaza Cánovas del Castillo. The Plaza was

This area has often been associated with the more conservative elements of Valencia society and during the ‘70s and early ‘80s it was known by some as

the ‘Zona Nacional’, one of the areas of Valencia with the highest number of Spanish flags hanging from the balconies mourning the death of Franco. In the middle of all this, and as symbolic (and pompous) as anything else in the area, is the falla-esque statue at the top of the Gran Vía designed by Mariano Benlliure. Rather than a tribute to a great artist or an ancient hero, here in Cánovas you naturally get a statue to one of their own, the Marqués de Campo. An archetypal 19th century paternalist fat cat, he was mayor, aristocrat, industrialist, intellectual and philanthropist, a man whose love for humanity was second only to his love for himself. There he stands tall, dressed to the nines in the garb of the time with his adopted son next to him, an Oliver Twistlike figure who the Marqués had plucked from the misery of poverty and brought up as his own. Down below, his business interests of shipbuilding, city gas and the railways are represented along with (lest

we forget) his great works of philanthropy like the Casa de Beneficencia workhouse and the Asilo de Marqués de Campo old people’s home. He did a lot of work for charity but he didn’t like to talk about it. He just had a huge statue erected to himself at the end of the Gran Vía. While Cánovas has always been considered to be ‘a good address’ for lawyers’ offices and private medical practices, since the ‘70s it has also become a key area of the city for bars and restaurants. On the right hand side of the Gran Vía is a true Cánovas staple, Aquarium. A perfect name for a place where, for the last four decades, gentleman of a certain age and a certain social class (who really should know better) float around hoping to be seen in their jaunty nautical shirts, expensive jeans and loafers. But Cánovas, of course, is not just a place for the oversixties. During the 1980s it became THE place to meet for private school teenagers and well-heeled students. The story goes that it all started when Bar Zorba’s on the corner of C/ Conde Altea and C/ Salamanca became a favourite meeting point for the pupils of the all-boys Catholic school Maristas and their counterparts in the posh Loreto photos © Kaiko - Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

all-girls school. From there, bar after bar opened throughout the adjacent streets keen to get hold of a share of the cash from papá in exchange for plastic cups of dodgy spirits. Before long, kids in monogrammed polo shirts with a little Spanish flag on their watches and RayBan sunglasses perched on their slightlytoo-long, gelled-back hair were pouring out onto the Gran Vía, cubalitro in hand, every weekend night.

exchange nights. On the right side of the Gran Vía, housed in the Edificio Chapa, is the well-known Irish pub St Patrick’s (Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 64), run by a welcoming staff and highly popular with locals and expats for live sports, including football and rugby. Don Salvatore (C/ Conde Altea, 41) is an Italian restaurant run by the legendary Jonathan, personal friend of all the sports stars who visit on a weekly basis.

Nowadays things are a little less raucous. Once strewn with noisy bars, C/ Salamanca is now filled with family restaurants and terraces but there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the area for those looking for a night out. C/ Conde Altea and the streets leading up to the river are popular for pubs and clubs of every type where, over a nice pint of Guinness, Cánovas types can practice their English and reminisce about the three-month business ‘masters’ they did at Loughborough University.

Though modern Cánovas may have lost some of its pijo (posh kid) image, it still likes to see itself as a little bit upmarket. The kids from Maristas and Loreto have grown up and now like to patronise the many high-class gyms and beauticians, the acupuncturists and alternative medicine centres, the boutiques and little shops selling expensive children’s clothes and organic food and, of course, the odd top-quality-if-ever-so-slightlypretentious restaurant. It certainly hasn’t lost its inkling to be showy, all those smart tree-shaded terraces and shop windowlike bars offer the perfect opportunity to see and be seen. You, too, can be another fish in the aquarium.

If you are looking for something a little different, the authentic American cervecería Portland Ale House (C/ Salamanca, 10) offers a variety of good American beers and a friendly mixed crowd of people from around the world with a popular quiz & language

FOOD

Spring Unsprung So here we are, spring slowly fading into summer, swanning in through the door, we will soon be right in the thick of it. I thought I’d celebrate the end of spring with a lovely, light risotto. A sort of celebration of spring flavours and (probably) what will be one of the last times I’ll spend much time slaving over a stove until autumn arrives! Admittedly, there’s a lot of stirring involved in risottos, for a simple dish, there is a fair amount of labour involved. But it is a labour of love and it is an easy one - it’s not that bad a task to stand there stirring with one hand, glass of wine in the other, whilst chatting to your friends - easy peasy! I love risotto, and once you understand the basics of it, you’ll be able to make any flavour you like. I find it helpful when I’m making a recipe I’ve not done before to read it through from beginning to end before you start cooking. This will help you break down the recipe into a few basic steps, so that you may understand the broad process of what’s going on. I know this sounds nerdy, but if you’re not a big cook or just learning to cook, it’s a really, really good tip. If you can let go in the kitchen, and not be a slave to a recipe, you will find your own creativity and inspiration and you’ll truly feel like you’re having more fun in the kitchen well, that and a little vino, and you’ll be thoroughly enjoying yourself! Put the stock into a saucepan that will fit it and keep it over low heat on the stove top. Then, put a large, heavybased saucepan over medium heat and add in a couple of tablespoons full of olive oil. Add the chopped onions to this and sweat them gently until they have softened. Be careful not to brown them here, that is not the flavour we’re after, we just want to make them soft and translucent by cooking them gently. Pour yourself a glass of wine.

Courgette and Dill Risotto • 1 brown onion, diced • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped • 500 gm Arborio rice • 1 bottle nice, dry white wine • 1.25L chicken or veg stock • 2 courgettes in small dice • 1 small bunch of dill, finely chopped • 1 cup grated Pecorino cheese • 1 dollop of crème fraîche or sour cream (optional)

just a dollop if you fancy it. A little soft goat’s cheese would also pair well with this risotto. Serve out onto plates or large bowls, preferably with the wine you made it with, but a good white wine will do well enough. I also roasted some baby beetroots to go with mine, but you don’t have to serve risotto with anything other than wine. And that’s it. A lovely spring dish that’s light but filling and will make a great meal for either lunch or supper. Now, bring on those summer salads! Buen provecho!

After a few minutes, add the garlic and stir it around for a minute or so to soften. Next add the rice and stir it well into the onions and garlic until it is well coated by the oil. Turn the heat up slightly and pour in a good cup of wine - the rest of the bottle is yours! The wine should bubble up nicely and the rice will start to absorb it. When the wine has been almost all absorbed, add a ladle full of stock or two. Stir the rice well and agitate the pan a little. Keep adding the stock in this way, waiting for each addition to absorb, until you’re about half way through the amount of stock. Now add the diced courgettes and continue adding stock until all has been absorbed. Near the end of adding all the stock, you’re looking for a nice, thick consistency, not too soupy and not too dry. The rice should be slightly al dente - it should still have a tiny bite to it, almost like it’s not quite cooked - this is perfect risotto! When all the stock has been added, stir in the Pecorino cheese (or Parmesan if you have it), the dill and if you would like it creamy, you can add some crème fraîche or sour cream BUZZING IRISH PUB

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CARMEN MIRANDA

It’s amazing the way people insist on inviting you to eat with them when your partner goes away and leaves you for a few days - ‘a la Rodriguez’, as they call it here in Spain. D has returned to her home town for a couple of weeks to see her family, leaving me to carry on and to fend for myself - not a problem! - I happen to love cooking and food shopping. No sooner has she departed than the phone rings: “Come and have dinner”, “What are you doing for lunch?”, “I bet you haven’t eaten a proper meal...”. Yes, I have! I’ve cooked meals, I’ve eaten on a regular basis and, really, I am fine! Despite the protestations, I have ended up eating out over half of the nights that D is away and had as many lunches out, too! I had luscious risotto, cooked to perfection by one friend, an excellent pesto cooked by a couple- a joint effort, and great ‘Mexican Fayre’ in the company other friends. So I was running out of time to get to this month’s Restaurant of the Month, Carmen Miranda. I managed it on a Tuesday night with my friend P. Tuesday is, frankly, not the greatest night to test the ambience of a restaurant, especially in these times of crisis. The restaurant had a few diners and we were shown to our table by Jesús, one of the owners. Jesús is front of house, while Juan is in the kitchen working on some excellent food. For those of you who didn’t know, Carmen Miranda was a legendary Portuguese-born Brazilian samba singer and actress.

Carmen Miranda the restaurant has undergone a change since we last saw it. Gone are the sofas and mirrors and it is now a large and clean room dominated by the image of the lady herself, complete with her fruity headgear, on the dark grey rear wall - the furniture is stark white and the tables laid with white crockery on black or green mats. The menu is quite simple, around 18 dishes ranging from starters to mains, four postres and a wine list consisting of just two reds, one white and one rosé wine, water, beer and soft drinks, coffees and infusions. There is a 15€ menú degustación (tasting menu) on offer each evening and we decided to plump for this over an icy-cold martini. It is nice to let someone else decide your culinary fate once in a while. We also ordered a bottle of the Valencia Coto d’Arcís Crianza red wine. We sipped our martinis to a laid back soundtrack of cool jazz and chatted about food, the first days of summer, and the crazy rain that took us all by surprise the day before. Why are we always caught out by these massive downpours here in Valencia? We had chosen to eat inside this evening although they have a large terrace because the sky was looking a little threatening when we arrived, but we needn’t have worried, the rain stayed away. Besides, it gave us an excuse to talk to Jesus about the restaurant and how he and Juan had moved here from Ciudad Real, where they had run a small casa rural and restaurant. They explained that they had changed the layout of the restaurant to make it more inviting and how they are looking forward to the terraza trade this summer.

Our first course was ‘Confit de pato’ with two marmalades, one of which was Parma Violet, P’s very favourite flavour in the world, so we were off to a good start. Our next course was Verduritas confitadas con ahumados (grilled roasted vegetables with smoked fish) - a lovely combination of the sweet roasted peppers and onions and the salty smokiness of the fish. Next came grilled squid, a small one each, garlicky and oily and perfectly cooked. The main course was a pork loin with yucca chips on a bed of roast potatoes - we had just been looking at the yuccas that afternoon in a supermarket and remarking that neither of us ever cooked them. The pork was tender and tasty, the juice-soaked roast potatoes delicious. Postre? It is such a problem having puddings - I am not a pudding person, as you know if you read this regularly, but P was lured by the word chocolate and I, too, succumbed to a chocolaty creamy thing in a Martini glass called Pedro Ximénez con helado y pasas. P told me to tell you it was delicious. Carmen Miranda is great value for exciting and well-cooked food. It is in C/ En Plom just by the Torres de Quart, off C/ Guillem de Castro, and is well worth the visit. Expect to pay around 20€. CHILL OUT

UBIK CAFÉ The up-and-coming barrio of Ruzafa is now what El Carmen was five years ago. Every bajo and every little space is being taken over by travelled, arty and bohemian people and being made into fascinating hangouts that you will definitely go back to. Ubik Café opened in December 2009 and is run by three Italian guys. The story is that Ricardo and Lorenzo met on Erasmus in Madrid ten years ago, and decided they wanted to open a coffee shop / book shop / restaurant anywhere that they felt they could. They tried it out in Rome and tired of all the red tape, gave up and ending up sleeping on the sofa of a friend of a friend of a friend whilst they trailed Valencia to see if they liked it. Whilst kipping at Piero’s, they found he wanted in on the idea, too. Having never been in Valencia before, they decided that this was the place, and got Article © 2010 24/7Valencia / photos © Pierpaolo Palazzo

jobs in random places whilst they looked for the space to open Ubik Café. Doing all the DIY themselves, restoring furniture they found on the streets, and gathering and buying a large collection of second-hand books, suddenly Ubik Café was ready and born. And they are still going strong a year and a half later. The idea is a place for anyone and everyone to have a drink or something to eat and to buy a second-hand or a brand new book at a good price. The prices of drinks and yummy Spanish and Italian tapas are in everyone’s price range, and it’s anything from 10 euros to 22 for a bottle of wine. The books can cost anything from one euro! Their special event is the ‘Tapa del Libro’ nights held one Thursday a month, where for just three euros you get a glass of beer and a homemade tapa (pasta, salad, meat pie!), and a second-hand book to take home with you. Jazz nights, live concerts and readings are also held there on a regular basis, as will the 24/7 Valencia 10 Year Anniversary Party on 24 June at 20:30h. They hold children’s mornings on Saturday mornings from 11.00h where your child can go and make things and read

and have fun for five euros a head, and be looked after by the lovely Alicia. They have art exhibitions on all the time at the front of the bar and played a large role in the Russafart festival this year. What excited me most was that I can buy second-hand ENGLISH books for three euros a pop! Pop by, buy a beautiful and loved secondhand book or a brand new one, order a beer and have a seat on the comfortable sofas or the quirky chairs that don’t match, and enjoy. VALENCIA WORLD INTERVIEW former is sweet, romantic and full of folklore while the latter, merengue, is more cheerful and contagious on the dance floor.

Luís Sandoval on love, political corruption and Diego Maradona The meeting place is his regular, Bar Negrito (Plaza del Negrito). Two glasses of red wine and the dark music of Tricky’s “Bad Dreams” is filling the air. At 40 years old, Luís Alberto Sosa Sandoval looks as energetic and lively as ever. The secret, he tells me, is to always be in love, even when love turns itself against you. That sounds only slightly less corny in Spanish but his broad smile adds a lot of weight to it. On the same note, his grandmother of 96 in the Dominican Republic still considers him a virgin as he did not yet provide her with grandchildren. Perhaps that keeps him young, but he also admits to running a lot in the riverbed of the old Turia. What’s the life of an immigrant like in Valencia? Luís came to Valencia 14 years ago. He was born and raised in the Dominican town of San José de los Llanos, but his musical talents paved a way for him to come to Europe. He arrived in Spain on a Latin music tour organised by a fellow immigrant woman from Nicaragua and decided to stay for two good reasons: he fell in love with a Valencia girl and he was able to continue playing here. Since he arrived in Valencia, Luís, better known locally under his last (and artistic) name of Sandoval, has had quite some success as a musician. With his ‘Muralla Latina’ group, Sandoval plays a lot locally and made several appearances on local television, most notably in the famous programme ‘La Tómbola’, a talk show that ended in 2004 and which was regarded as the archetype of ‘telebasura’ with host journalists such as Lydia Lozano. ‘Sandoval y la Muralla Latina’ play salsa and two rhythms with cultural origins in the Dominican Republic: bachata and merengue. According to Sandoval, the Photo www.chronoscoop.nl

Sandoval now has a Spanish passport so we first talk a bit about his identity. He considers himself both Dominican and Spanish, a mixture of the best of both worlds. He feels at home and completely integrated in Valencia society. He tells me Valencia has given him a lot. It has opened up doors for him and allowed him to grow as an artist. From being a backing vocalist and trumpet player back in the Dominican Republic, he became a singer-songwriter and frontman of his band. Apart from these professional opportunities, he says in Valencia, he loves the sea, the nightlife, and the good local wines. His music is a way for him to give something back to Valencia. Are there any negative sides to Valencia? Sandoval says that he has experienced quite a bit of racism since he arrived. This ranged from people calling him names in the street to the police bothering him from time to time. But he immediately adds that in general he has been very lucky as an immigrant in Valencia. Still, he thinks there is a need to address some of the social and political problems in the city. Political corruption, the theme of his last song, is among them. Why is it so important to raise such issues in his songs? Although some of his songs are about lighter topics, Luis says he wants to provide his small contribution to raising awareness on issues that the people are concerned about. A recent book on corruption by Carlo Alberto Brioschi states that Spanish people have grown accustomed to political corruption and even keep supporting politicians that are accused of or condemned for corruption cases. Still, Sandoval says that it is important to prevent Spain from turning into the Dominican Republic, where corruption is a way of life. The corresponding video of his song “El Reciclaje de los Políticos Corruptos” has quite a lot of images of the popular rally against corruption, the Partido Popular and regional President Camps. Sandoval comments that he is not against the conservative party, but concerned with corruption in general. He definitely does not want to choose sides in the political division that is still very

much visible in Spain today. To stress the fact that he is not a political singer, he mentions that his next video will be about Argentina football coach Diego Maradona. When all eyes will be on the Argentinean coach during the World Cup, fans will be able to dance to the funny “Mi Primo Maradona” song, which contains a play on words with cocaine and Coca Cola. About five years ago, Sandoval was featured in a ‘Punt 2’ television documentary about immigrants in Valencia, which introduced people in Valencia to his band and to his day-today life in Valencia. That ironically also was the starting point of some years with less success. Sandoval explains that life has become harder for local musicians. Because of the Internet it is difficult to sell records and most of the smaller record companies have closed shop, making it more difficult for smaller artists to earn a living through their music. His recent appearance on Facebook and other online social networks only partly makes up for that. Nevertheless, Sandoval is positive about the future. He wants to reach a global audience with his songs and music. He is currently working on a song about illegal immigrants arriving from Africa. His advice for immigrants arriving now: always work hard and things will work out for you in the end. While we continue to sip our wines, Sandoval sings part of this new song: “Comencemos a ayudar a los que vienen de fuera, comencemos a ayudar a los que vienen en patera, porque cuando Colón fue al Caribe, fue de la misma manera” (Let’s start to help the people who come from abroad / Let’s start to help the people who come in small boats / Because when Columbus went to the Caribbean / He went the same way”), the wise words of an integrated immigrant who continues to be in love in, and with, the city of Valencia. KANDA BOOKS

KANDA BOOKS Most people will agree that Valencia is pretty much perfect with its (usually) short winters and long summers, its great location on the Mediterranean, its fresh delicious food and stunning architecture. But for many there was something missing. You may have noticed it yourself when lazing on the beach or when passing an hour or two in the park or on the Metro. What was it? It was the opportunity to get lost in a good book. For non-Spanish speakers, Valencia was lacking in options for foreign language books. It was possible to go and buy the full priced latest novels from the main shops, but the cost certainly racks up after buying one or two as prices in Spain tend to be a lot higher than you might be used to. And then came the solution. KandABooks. Hidden away in one of those magical streets in El Carmen it’s stuffed with an ever-growing number of second hand books to keep you engrossed all summer and probably the winter too. KandABooks is owned by Kelly and Andy, a British couple who are settling in well having only moved here in August of last

year. Their shop is open 7 days a week and they are both happy to give you some reading recommendations, share stories, give some tips into Valencia and generally chew the fat with you.

the books you bring in. It means that you can change the ones you’ve read for new ones which could come in very handy if you’re travelling with one of the budget airlines!

The books range from 1€ for well thumbed paperbacks to 15€ for the latest Lonely Planet Guides ensuring there’s something available for everyone’s budget. And its not just English books, although the majority of books are in English, as they also have shelves dedicated to Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, French (and the odd one in other languages too).

So if you’re only here for a short while enjoying all that Valencia has to offer and you’ve read the book you came with and now need something to pass the time on the beach or even the next leg of your journey, pop in and check out their selection.

Both fiction and non-fiction books which cater to all tastes are available, books for adults kids books, and also language learning books for all levels from beginner up to expert. They’ve even marked award winning books and easy to read books, as well as given personal and customer recommendations to make it easier to search out what you want. If you can’t make it to the shop they list all the books in the shop on their website at www.kandabooks.com. If you see something you like there just e-mail them and they’ll set it aside for you for the next time you’re able to pop in. Their big thing is green, ethical living, and through this they have a book exchange offer. When you have finished your book, or if you have good quality books at home that you don’t want any more, they’ll discount your next purchase based on the value of

They also provide a sweet reminder of home from home with a great selection of chocolate and sweets and also are one of the few places in Valencia you can buy handmade greeting cards too. Buying cards from KandABooks also means you are supporting two childrens charities – one in Africa and one in India - as for every sale, a donation from the proceeds is made to these. So if you’re in Valencia looking for a great value book, a taste of home, or just want to get an insight into Valencia, make your way along to KandABooks. KandABooks

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Barajaʼs last match for Valencia

MISSION

ACCO M PLI S HED It’s all over for another season, Valencia have entertained, frustrated and infuriated its followers throughout the year but finally they managed to confirm the thirdplace berth, which means that we will have Champions League football next season. On January 2nd, Valencia moved up into third place and stayed there all the way to the end, eventually holding an eightpoint gap over fourth-placed Sevilla. The Valencia fans were able to watch the last few games in relative peace as the team’s position was already confirmed. This fact also allowed the club to preempt the market by announcing three new signings as soon as the season finished. The first was Ricardo Costa, a Portuguese defender, who comes on a free from German outfit Wolfsburg. He’s no spring ‘pollo’ but comes on the cheap and hopefully will shore up the rickety Valencia defence that failed to come to terms with the loss of influential centre back Raul Albiol, who toddled off to Real Madrid during the summer when Florentino Pérez got out the cheque book.

Another addition is young French midfielder Sofiane Feghouli, who apparently is one for the future; again Valencia had done their homework beforehand and snapped up one of France’s top promises on another free transfer. The Chés had to shell out money for the third signing, Turkish international Mehmet ‘The Spider’ Topal, who apparently is a defensive midfielder whose speciality is cutting out passes and breaking down the opponent’s play. Hopefully, he can pass the ball as well, if not he could always go back to being the main man in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Of course, as some players climb aboard, others have jumped ship, most notably David Villa, who has gone to Barcelona for around 40 million euros. Valencia will struggle to find a player of ‘El Guaje’s’ calibre for a long time but in the cold light of day, Valencia cannot pretend to hold onto arguably the world’s greatest striker when said player wants to win titles before he hangs up his boots. Next season Villa will surely surpass the 30 goal mark playing in what is probably the best Barça line-up in its history. Villa has given his all for Valencia and 40 million euros is a lot of money for a player who will be 29 years old in December 2010.

Another who has left is Serbian giant Nikola Zigić, who for whatever reason has been unable to make Unai Emery believe in him. He’s gone off to Birmingham City for around 7 million euros, which is a big financial loss compared to what VCF paid for him a few years ago. At this moment in time, Valencia has no recognised forwards in its squad, although no secrets have been made about the club’s desire to bring in Mallorca’s Aritz Aduriz and Getafe’s Roberto Soldado. Another rumour that is growing in strength is that ex-Man Utd and Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will join on a loan, injuries pending. If the Chés could get the Dutchman fit, he would be sure to stick in a panful next season and whereas Soldado is a proven goal scorer, Aduriz could hardly be referred to as prolific. Time will tell and money will be important as the club look to continue keeping costs at a minimum. Much will also depend if more players leave the team and for how much. David Silva is being chased by Real Madrid, Man City and Man Utd, Mata by several clubs and Manuel Fernandes has quite clearly stated that he wishes to leave Valencia, the only problem being that nobody wants to buy him. © 24/7 Valencia 2010

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 As all these transfer market movements continue the World Cup approaches, Spain are the bookies’ favourites and they are the form team even if they did struggle to beat Saudi Arabia the other day. Hypothetically, Spain could meet England in the final and banking giant JP Morgan has used its immensely powerful quant machine to predict the outcome of this year’s final. Using all kinds of data, their findings are that England will beat Spain 2-1 to lift the World Cup! So, to wrap up the season, Valencia have done exactly what they could have hoped to do last August, which was to finish in the top three guaranteeing Champions League football and its necessary financial rewards. The team have finished third, behind two of the best teams in world football who both own bottomless war chests to finance deals that VCF can only dream about. Barcelona have paid 75 million euros plus Samuel Eto’o for Zlatan Ibrahimović, who could now be on his way out, and now they have shelled out 40 million for our own David Villa. Real Madrid spent 260 million euros last summer and have achieved exactly the same result as ‘nostre Valencia’, no titles and Champions League football next year. Let’s celebrate this season

and look forward to the next one and let’s hope that Valencia sign a striker. If they’re struggling we could always loan them Jason Scotland. Yes, Wi-gan! Mark Hulton See listings for football calendar

CLUBLAND Hi folks! First things first, I would like to congratulate the 24/7 family on reaching the ten year milestone. Most definitely not a feat to be sniffed at, so well done one to all who have contributed. A serious knees up is more than warranted so expect the whole crew to party hard on the 24th of June at The Ubik Café in Ruzafa on Literato Azorín, 13 at 20.30h. The nightlife scene has seen some major changes, developments and losses over the last decade. Ten years just about precedes me but I was here long enough ago to catch the death rattle of the famous “ruta de bacalao”, which brought the Madrid crowd down the A3 to the famous clubs which were spinning a Valencian hardcore techno sound non-stop from Thursday night till Sunday afternoon. I imagine the current scene appears tame in comparison but Valencia has witness some pretty cool movements over the last ten years including Drum& Bass, Deep House, Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Reggae, Funk, Electro and Dub Step. The city has definitely benefitted from a number of pioneering lost souls from outside of Spain bringing fresh ideas, music and attitudes. Some ideas have merged well with the Valencianos love of a good party to help build a reputation as a pretty decent party/club city these days. So those of you who played your part as Djʼs, promoters or just serious clubbers – we salute you! Summer is more or less upon us and the clubs are make with the unenviable task of trying to entice clubbers through the door with interesting and varied programming while also trying to keep down cost in such trying times. The power is most definitely with the client right now as clubs battle it out to offer the best anti-crisis offers. Valencia in the Summer is very much about the open air experience and we kick off our what’s happening section by heading to the port area. Estrella Damm (America´s Cup port - Marina Real Juan Carlos I) is always a popular spot and there is usually a

very decent turnout no matter what day of the week.. Therefore those behind AHH Sunday each and every Sunday afternoon/evening should have high hopes of success. With Paul Childs (UK) as resident alongside some of Valencia’s finest, a nice mix of deep and groovy house can be guaranteed to accompany a refreshing mojito. The mainstream crowd should head for the best known terraces In the city such as Las Animas (grupolasanimas.com), Lʼumbracle (The City of the Arts and Science) and Gandhara (Malvarrosa Beach). LA3 on C/ Padre Porta, 2 provides an option for those in search of Indie, Pop, Indietronica and Electro Clash should make their way along Avenida Del Puerto and check out LA3. These guys never stand still with their program so expect a month filled with guests, national and international acts. (www. groovelives.com) For those looking for a even more underground tip I give you the challenge of tracking down the @#+k commercial s@#t rave which takes place at the Playa de la Mosca on the 12/13 June. Drum n Bass and Techno are on the menu. Another party which bucks the summer trend by packing crowds into a sweat box during summer months is SOUL in Rumbo 144 (Blasco Ibáñez, 144). Every Saturday night from the 19th of June for the Urban Crowd. Yours truly will be sharing the wheels of steel with a whole heap of guests and banging out the very best of RnB, hip Hop, Dancehall and UK Funky. Rumbo’s Wednesday night urban session is a packed seven in the morning affair throughout the year so don`t expect any let up in the Summer.

country this summer in the shape of the Heineken FIB festival (www.fiberfib. com) in Benicassim which takes place up the coast from the 15th till the 18th of July. Get your skates on if you want to catch the likes of The Prodigy, Dizzee Rascal, Lilly Allen and Kasabian. Spanish locals prepare for that time of the year when they wake up to the sound of revellers taking a bath in their swimming pool! Advance warning also for the Arenal Sounds Festival (http://arenalsound. com/villae.html) which will take place in Burriana from the 27th of July and feature Simple Minds, The Cranberries and Armen Van Burren amongst many. Brazillian beats are on offer every week at Cachao on Plaza Periodista Vicente Ros Belda, 5 just behind Avenida Aragon. So there you have it for June – Sunshine and holidays will undoubtedly provide the perfect conditions for all you 24/7 party people. Enjoy!!

Peace DJ CosyO See http://www.facebook.com/djcosyo1 for more information

The crowds arrive at Rumbo having usually passed by one of Valencia’s longest running midweek sessions at Fox Congo on Calle Caballeros, 35. Back in the UK, streetdance fever has gripped the masses on the back of Diversity’s success in Britain’s got talent and the release of a 3D movie. On the 27th of June Valencia’s Funkydance competition will see hundreds of Hip Hop dancers from all over Spain and further afield battle it out at the Palau de la musica. WOMAN

I am so rubbish at packing it’s not true. I have just this second abandoned a suitcase half-full on the floor and a bed covered in clothes, shoes and bags to sit at my computer because I give up. I already know what’s going to happen. When I get to my destination, I will realise I have left everything I actually want to wear at home and that none of the clothes I have packed match in a way that could actually constitute an ‘outfit’, so I may as well pop on a blindfold and cram random items from my wardrobe in a holdall without looking, because at least that way I won’t get annoyed at myself when, whilst unpacking, it becomes apparent I may as well have done it that way in the first place. Where am I going? I hear you wonder. Well, I am off on a road trip with four of my best girlfriends. The lady readers out there will know that working out what to take on holiday is even harder if you’re going away with girls because we all really notice what each other is wearing. So far, from where I’m sitting I can see a flowery dress, some leggings, a denim shirt and a striped T shirt, which I obviously will not be piling on at the same time. Aside from the suitcase dilemma (which will be easily solved as we all share everything anyway and my stripy T is sure to match one of the other girls’ denim shorts and grey blazer, for example) I am so excited it’s not true. It’s been donkey’s years since I went on a proper girlie holiday, Ibiza/Summer 2007 to be exact, and even though it’s just a long weekend it will be lovely to get away from la Ciudad. We are off to Photo Mateo Sanchis. Article © 2010 24/7 Valencia

for insurance/garage space/petrol! It’s only this weekend really when it would have come in useful - I walk or bus it everywhere, really, in Valencia.

Alicante, which is a delightful city, and the weather looks like it will be lovely, too. Four out of the five of us girls hitting the road tomorrow are also looking to get away from boy-related dramas - who am I kidding, as if we’re ever free of those! I may have just come out of the shortest relationship in the history of man, but, don’t worry folks, I’m not devastated, or hiding under a duvet with an endless supply of chocolate - though the boy in question was ever so sweet and boasted a rare, wide-eyed innocence you don’t see very often, he was a little dull if I’m completely honest, and I know I’m going to go back to having much more fun without him! I’m not being a man-hating cow, I can’t stand girls that do that as soon as one of their friends’ relationships looks like they’re in trouble- “Oh, we never liked him”, “Men are crap!” etc., it’s just I like my men with a bit of crazy stirred in, and this one was seriously lacking in that department. I mean spontaneous, silly sense of humour, no shame in public sort of crazy, not the axe-wielding kind, just to be clear there. So ex-boyfriends (and current boyfriend, sorry Iz!) long behind us, the hilly city of Alicante awaits, and a whole day of uninterrupted retail therapy on the endless strip of shopping centres that is the entrance into Murcia is on the cards. We are all deeply embarrassed to admit that poor M. will be the only one driving our rent-a-car as she is the only one with a licence! Yes, five twentysomething independent women and only one drives. It’s ridiculous, really, but I am far too poor right now to one, pay for lessons, two, buy a car, and three pay

We are renting because M.’s reliable old Corsa turned out not to be so reliable in the end after all, and needs the thingamajig and the what’s-it-called fixed, straight away, stat!, so we couldn’t very well go in that. Oh, and the boot is small, so we wouldn’t have got many candle holders/picture frames/tables/ jars of herring from Ikea in, would we? We have set ourselves a challenge to try and do Ikea in under two hours, having stopped for the obligatory meatballs and cranberry sauce and smoked salmon platters for lunch and all, so somebody please have the Guinness Book of Records on speed dial, please! If you’ve been to Ikea, you will know how clever the layout is that one is forced to walk the floor of the entire superstore before getting to the cash desks - even if you only want one rubbish bin! (yes, it’s happened to me). We have a plan of action and are going to use our cunning female charm to cut through straight to the bazaar. It’s all very well them guiding you through the showroom but I quite like my house how it is, thank you very much, and don’t need suggestions on how to lay out my bedroom. I know what I need and would like to get right to the end of the treasure hunt through the whole store to the rugs, lamps and sheets, so I can get what I need and get out of there and back to Alicante. After all, when you’re with your girls and having a night out, the best bit is all getting ready together and enjoying a glass of wine as you get preened and dressed. And don’t tell anybody, but I’m hoping the few glasses of wine might just help me convince Iz to trade me my flowery dress for her studded miniskirt, and it’s going to take at least that if she’s going to even think about handing it over!

44 twentyfoursevenvalencia of the helmet is to save your life in a bike crash. It’s a fact that in the majority of collisions your head is the first part of your body to receive the impact. Orange Bikes is a bike shop but also a bike rental business. The first thing we did after choosing quality bicycles was to look for good helmets to offer our clients. (All cyclists are provided with a safe helmet when they rent from us.) It is an aspect of the business in which we would never look to save money, because it is just too important for that.

Safe Cycling (and Please, Wear a Helmet)

The last days of May brought us some ‘bad’ news for the cyclists in Valencia. Finally, the local government has banned the circulation of bicycles in the pavements of our city… without offering to cyclists a good and safe alternative. They just said we have to cycle in the road, and risk our lives between the cars. We’re not living in Holland, and it’s going to be really difficult to cycle in these conditions… no more connected bike paths, just a few ‘bici-calles’, a weird name for certain streets supposed to be restricted to 30 kms/h for the car traffic (I never felt that this was happening when I was cycling in one of these streets). Other points in these new rules are the mandatory use of lights and fluorescent clothes in the night, but, as usual, no one says anything about the helmet. I heard a lot of controversy about the use of the helmet in town. Outside the city area, where the local government has no authority about the traffic, it is mandatory to use a helmet, and now the Guardia Civil is going to be really strict about it, as it appears in the new traffic law approved few days ago. Then… why is it not mandatory to use it in town? I heard reasons like… “A car driver is going to be more careful with you if you don’t wear a helmet”. But there are a lot of articles and studies around the world proving how important the use

A helmet consists of three main parts. The outer layer is made of a special plastic that usually survives direct impact. The inner layer is made from materials that differ with each manufacturer, with extra sponge padding attached for comfort. This inner layer is extremely important as it absorbs the impact felt by our heads. Then there are the straps that should keep the helmet in place, in the moment of impact. The manufacture of helmets has advanced and now almost all helmets have straps that go from the nape of the neck (with a part inbuilt to protect the body there) and from the front of the helmet, joining under the chin. When buying a helmet the first thing to take into consideration is the manufacturing method, which should always have been done using the In-Mold2 technology. This technology is designed to make the outer and inner layers at the same time. This greatly increases the strength of the union between the parts. After this, check that the straps are made as described above, arriving from front and back of the helmet to under the chin. It is also important to consider the way the ventilation shafts are constructed. Ventilation is a necessary thing, but some designs compromise the overall safety of the helmet. Use your judgement. A removable sun visor is also a welcome extra in this sunny city of ours. Fasten your helmet safely to your head, keeping in mind the possibility of impact, and not the crazy fashion of leaving them dangling loose at the sides of your head. Wearing a loose helmet can be as bad or worse than wearing no helmet at all, because if it slips from position in an accident, it can damage your neck or face. Finally, and talking about active safety, there are helmets with lights attached to the rear side, and fluorescents strips that helps you to be even more visible. Safe cycling (and good luck…)!
