BACCO D.O.C.

this has become one of the most popular restaurants in all of Valencia… and for all of the right reasons. It is original, good fun and it is baroque! It has a stunning cave-like interior of “bejewelled and mirrored” stalagmites and stalactites, tasteful lighting, lots of nooks and crannies and three floors. So it’s no surprise that this restaurant is highly popular with romantic couples looking for something original yet tasty and genuine. It’s also a first choice for international visitors, the arts crowd and work groups. How about the food? Our international food critic found their Tagliatelle Funghi Porcini “delightful” and their Carpaccio and Aubergine Parmigiano “absolutely delicious”. They have a superb value afternoon menu for 10 euros during the week and 12 euros at the weekends. Expect to pay around 30 euros in the evening.

Summer has arrived and it is time to eat, drink and enjoy life. Bacco D.O.C. is a distinctive and authentic Italian restaurant in the centre of the historic Barrio del Carmen. Run by a welcoming Italian family and with Italian chefs,

The salads are imaginative and well-presented including a succulent Insalata di Rucola e Parmigiano, authentic Caprese de Bufala and tasty Insalata Bacco to choose from. Lovers of Spanish wine can enjoy a fair selection of tintos including Muga Crianza (Rioja) and

Plaerdemavida Reserva (Utiel-Requena). Their carta is extensive with a wide selection of pizzas including chicken, bacon, cheese and tropical fruit specialities. Their authentic pastas include Spaghetti alle Vongole, Bucatini all’ Amatriciana, Tagliatelle Paglia e Fieno and Gnocchi Rucola e Speck. Meat dishes including Tagliata, Filetto alla Griglia, Ossobuco alla Milanese, and Scaloppine in Salsa are amongst the recommended. If you prefer a white wine to go with your fish dishes like Orata or Branzino, we recommend their Señorío de Sobral (Albariño). Lovers of Italian wine can enjoy their Lambrusco. The 24/7 Valencia team has always found the atmosphere welcoming and often international, especially at the weekends. Now that summer has arrived, it’s time to relax, have fun and enjoy some genuine Italian cuisine in heady surroundings. We recommend you take a trip to one of the most original Italian restaurants in Spain. Just one minute’s walk from the Mercado Central! Bacco D.O.C. ACTIVE ENGLISH

We’ve basically organised a free language exchange group in the Valencia area based around activities that people like to do. So far, we’ve been walking in the country and doing cinema trips to UGC Cine Cite and Cine Babel (with a drink after to chat about the film), pub quizzes, meals etc. Members can suggest and organise activities themselves by posting an idea

and testing the response. Photography outings, video groups, cycling trips, Trivial Pursuit/Scrabble evenings and cooking classes have already been suggested. People need to join the group to receive information. Activities are posted on the Google Groups page and anyone can come along.

Valencia in summer is full of the joys of life. Great weather, fine beaches, excellent nightlife, an increasingly international choice of restaurants and lots of outdoor concerts too! Valencians know how to enjoy life by living in ‘el moment’ and leaving tomorrow for another day. For those of you visiting Valencia for the first time…you’ve chosen the right ‘guia’ to Valencia. ‘24/7 Valencia’ is the oldest monthly guide to Valencia and is the only one recommended by all of the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, El País, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Footprints, Levante, Superdeporte, Thomas Cook, CNN.com, Guardian Unlimited, Business Traveller magazine and many more! 24/7 Valencia is the only English Speaking magazine to Valencia whose editor and team, as long-term residents of the city, have experienced and seen the city’s changes over the best part of two decades. Indeed, 24/7 Valencia has just finished celebrating its 10th anniversary edition. We started with nothing and we’ve come up the hard way. We also appreciate all the support we have been shown by the local, expat and tourist communities over the years. Recently, an experienced Valencian journalist got in touch by email to say that 24/7 Valencia, in her opinion, was “the best guide to Valencia

by a fair margin.” A streetwise British barman, based in Valencia, recently remarked that “24/7 Valencia is the best one going.” In this month’s special July/ August edition we have a packed arts, theatre and restaurant listings & busy agenda of concerts and club nights to help make your summer truly memorable. Legendary DJ Paul Childs gives you the lowdown on the local nightlife scene in Clubland and we visit the delicious ‘La Sardineria’ in restaurant of the month, excellently located by the Cathedral. Photography lovers are in for a treat with exclusive shots of Valencia summer, terraza life in the barrio of Ruzafa, party people getting into a groove and Valencians enjoying the World Cup too. Sport lovers will enjoy our exclusive photographic report that includes shots of the football stars Juan Mata, David Villa & Leo Messi, Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso and America’s Cup winners BMW Oracle. We dedicate this summer edition of 24/7 Valencia to our highly popular and talented writers David Rhead & José Marín. They have a piece on Guadalest for you all. It makes for a great day trip from Valencia. Have a great summer… and enjoy the moment! See you in September! 24/7 Valencia team

GUADALEST - HOW TO PASS A CAMEL THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE If you are going down the coast this summer and you find you’ve had enough of the packs of tourists and the sun, sea and sangria, you might want to get away from it all and visit an authentic medieval Spanish town set in spectacular countryside. It might occur to you that Guadalest, just 25 km west of Benidorm, is just the thing you’re looking for. The problem is you won’t be the only one. The castle of Guadalest is, after the Alhambra in Granada and the Prado Museum in Madrid, the third most visited tourist attraction in Spain. Guadalest in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province is nestled in amongst the three highest mountain ranges of the province, the Sierra Xortà to the north, the Sierra Aitana to the south and the Sierra Serrella to the west. This gives this little castle town dug into a steep valley an impressive natural fortification which was virtually impregnable in its day. Nowadays, of course, it is (for a moderate admission fee) open to all and sundry

seven days a week, with early closing on Sundays, and parking not included. The town, which consists of just one main street, a church and a Moorish castle, and has just 204 inhabitants according to the last census, receives more than 2,000,000 visitors a year. The history of Guadalest makes it a place of interest but it is considerably less significant than other less visited towns and cities in the Valencia region like, say, Sagunto or Xàtiva (Játiva). The castle was built during Muslim rule in the 11th century and was taken by the Crown of Aragon in the thirteenth century as part of the Christian Reconquest. Its imposing walls and position in the region gave it strategic importance throughout the medieval period and the 18th century War of Succession and it was a stronghold of the Dukes of Gandía and later the Cardona family. The castle was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1644 and you can still see where the walls were torn apart. It was

further ruined in 1708 during the War of Succession. Still in good repair is the stately 17th century Casa Orduña, built onto the rock of the old castle tower on one side and the baroque parish church on the other. However, along with its beautiful setting and, perhaps more importantly, its proximity to Benidorm, what really stands out for Guadalest is the unusual gift industry and insatiable appetite of its inhabitants for attracting tourists and tourist money. This must be the only town in Spain where you have to pay to get into the cemetery. If you go on a package tour to Benidorm, Altea or perhaps Calpe and there is a day trip as part of the deal, self-promotion and the right ‘connections’ have ensured that you can be almost certain it will include a visit to Guadalest. And when you get there the whole town seems to be involved in some way in the business of making your trip a happy and enjoyable

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

one, all for a small fee, of course. Guadalest has more museums per inhabitant than any other municipality in Europe. There are nine in total, the Casa Orduña Museum, the Antonio Marco Dollhouse Museum, the Ribera Girona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Micro-Miniatures (a collection of very small things including a miniature camel passing through the eye of a needle ), the Micro-Giant Museum (a collection of very small things and very big things, stupid), the Ethnological Museum (full of the same ageing farm implements and old kitchenware you can find in any Irish pub in Valencia), the Museum of Medieval Instruments of Torture (strangely popular with northern European tourists), the Guadalest Valley Museum of Historical Vehicles (mostly lots of rusting old motorbikes) and last, but not least, the Museum of Salt and Pepper Pots and Cruet Sets. Each museum charges three to four euros per adult although there are group rates and reductions for children. And if that’s not enough for you, those citizens of Guadalest who couldn’t photos © Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

decide what type of museum to turn their living rooms into have instead opened a restaurant, a bar or a souvenir shop. There’s a good choice of simple, decent restaurants, some serving the traditional stew ʻolletaʼ but most serving ‘traditional’ egg and chips, patatas bravas, ham bocadillos, pork fillets and salads, all with tourist-friendly picture menus . There’s also a vast array of local souvenirs on offer ranging from bulls made out of sea shells to comedy ceramic botijos artistically fashioned so it appears you are drinking wine out of a Guardia Civil officer’s penis. All this within ancient castle walls set in some of the most beautiful countryside in the area. A phenomenon like Guadalest is, of course, not without its colourful characters. For nearly thirty years, from the first democratic elections in 1979 until 2008, the town was run uncontested by Partido Popular mayor Juan Bautista Balaguer, an autocratic local bank manager. Under Balaguer the tourist business grew tenfold but his approach was what you might call a little too hands-on. He personally hired

and fired municipal employees and had the takings from the municipal car park and the publicly owned Casa Orduña delivered to his house each night to be put in the town council safe. Surprisingly enough, when he was finally voted out in 2008, the new PSPV government (led by ex-beauty queen Trinidad Amorós) found that the official council takings from the car park and official museum in their first year in office were in some cases five times more than that of the preceding three years under Balaguer, with the same prices and around the same number of visitors. Balaguer claims to be ‘unaware’ of any irregularity. If you don’t mind the buses of day trippers from the coast, Guadalest is a true testament to the wonderful ways of man when it comes to extracting a few euros from tourists, but so what? The town is well worth a visit if only for the beautiful views and of course the cruet set museum.

FOOD

Just Beet It! By now you probably all know my eternal love and fascination with the beet - my most favourite of vegetables. What did Tom Robbins say in ‘Jitterbug Perfume’, “a story that begins with the beet will end with the devil”. Great book, great vegetable. What’s that other saying? You can beat an egg, but you can’t beat a root?? Ha ha, lighten up! The beetroot, an amazing gem of nutrition and taste and a vegetable that should be wholly incorporated into our diets way more than it is - very high in iron, gals! Roast them, grate them, purée them in soup, put them in a carrot cake – its possibilities, like its colour, are endless. What on earth is more enticing, more devilishly exciting, more passionately exquisite than this vegetable? A purple burgundy that will stain the skin and pink the cheeks with greater fever than any vino tinto. We are well and truly in the thick of summer now, and as usual, my desire to cook lengthy meals is about as burning as a nice cool bath. Go out to eat, at home, make salads. For summer I’ve created a delicious salad for you, it’s big and hearty, it will nourish your club-exhausted system, rejuvenate your soul, quench your entire being. It’s a salad good enough on its own, and it will hold its own in a room full of blokes eating big steaks, and its colour and spark are enough to put that smile back all over your dial. Enough said? Have I convinced thee to buy a beet? Have waxed lyrically enough to stir you into a beat of urgency? Great! Let’s go. Head to the Mercado Central, buy a bunch of small beets with the tops still on, the leaves are great salad leaves and there’s no need to waste them. Grab all the other fresh veggies you need whilst you’re there, the naturally essential bottles of rosé and get cracking.

Can’t Beet a Summer Salad • 4-6 baby beets with leaves • 2 tsp sumac spice (zumaque) • 2 tbsp olive oil • Flakey sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 cloves garlic • 1 bunch new asparagus • 1 lemon • 200 gm mixed lettuce leaves • 1 punnet cherry tomatoes • 1 bunch mint leaves • 1 bunch chives • 3-4 spring onions • Small chunk green cabbage • Walnut oil and balsamic vinegar (optional)

with a handful of finely sliced green cabbage. Sprinkle with a little olive oil or walnut oil and add a few drops of balsamic vinegar if using, or just another squeeze of lemon. Now add in the cooled beetroot and slice the asparagus into chunks and add these, too, throw the beet leaves in and toss all to coat. Just before serving, gently toss through the mixed salad leaves. Check for seasoning and add a little extra salt and pepper if needed. Serve immediately with seared steaks, on its own, and definitely with plenty of cold rosé. If you want to mix it up, you can add grilled Haloumi cheese, crumbled soft goats cheese or even fried tofu – up to you. Delicious! And that’s summer; fresh and bountiful, healthy and healing. I’m off to have a baby now – OMG!!! Can anyone believe it?? So I’ll see you all back here in September – stay tuned for puréed banana I expect! Kidding. Professional Chef Erica Choate

Wash the beets and leaves and trim the leaves off the stems and set aside to drain. Cut the beets into quarters or eighths, depending on size. Preheat your oven to 180ºC and in a baking pan, put the beets, sumac, olive oil, salt and pepper, and garlic cloves. Toss all around to coat beets well, then bake in moderate oven for 30 minutes, until soft enough to yield to a knife. Allow beets to cool, you can do this ahead of time if you like. Heat a large frying pan and throw in a little olive oil, add the asparagus spears into this and quickly sauté them, squeezing the lemon over as you do. This will cause steam and cook them nicely, remove from heat after a few minutes – you just want to quickly char them but keep them crunchy. Quarter the cherry tomatoes and put them into a large salad bowl, add in as many mint leaves as you desire and finely chop the chives and add these too. Slice the spring onions into pieces about 1-2 cm long and add these, along BUZZING IRISH PUB

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LA SARDINERÍA Let’s be truly Valencian and talk about the weather at the top of this review! The heat arrived just in time for the F1 Grand Prix, moved from its roastingly hot August slot to the supposedly cooler month of June. It was 3º hotter for the main event and it hasn’t let up since. A colleague, a Valenciana in the know about all things weather-related, tells me it will be the hottest summer since records began; hotter by at least 3º – no, I’m not getting Prince Charles-like in my obsession for the Three Degrees – that’s what she told me. It’s coincidence that the F1 main race had the same hike in temperature. A friend was in (on!) one of the open grandstands facing the sun and reckoned it was “hotter than hell”, though he did have a good view of the race. We met up afterwards at the Guinness House to watch the miserable defeat of England in the World Cup and he drank an awful lot of liquid – not sure if it was pure thirst or the match! Having guests staying is really very nice, particularly if they are the types who want to try new foods and flavours. M and his partner B love to eat out in Valencia and, as soon as they set foot off the plane, invariably want a list of our latest finds and they are off, booking us to join them on some and reporting back to tell me if I am right or not on the other ones. Coincidentally, though I hadn’t tried it myself, I had heard great reports about La Sardineria and sent them without knowing that the editor of this fine magazine would

phone me almost the next day to ask me to review it. M and B raved about it after their visit, so I looked forward to my turn in the company of P. We booked a table for 21.30h. D was off to a different restaurant with another good friend, so we left home together in good time, only to find I’d left the car’s lights on and the battery was flat - profuse apologies by phone to both the restaurants and a mad dash for the Metro. We were (fashionably?) late. And hot. Very hot, and it was therefore a great relief to find we had an outside table with the El Miguelete bell tower as the backdrop to our dinner. We had a good look through the menu but decided to let the restaurant select our meal for us.

expect from a restaurant whose speciality is this very fish, were excellent. Served hot and crisp, they were salty and delicious. Something very curious is happening to me doing these reviews, I have never been a great ‘postre’ or dessert lover, but recently I have begun to look forward to the (invariably) chocolaty end to the evening. P absolutely adores chocolate so I let her choose and La Sardineria came up trumps with not one, but two unusual chocolate creations for us to try. The first was a Tarta de Chocolate with Maldon Salt, smooth and terribly rich with the crunch of that salt – really worked for us! The other was a rich dark chocolate cake with nuts and, wait for it, basil. A stunning combination and a great end to a lovely meal.

We both love clochinas (mussels) and pulpo a la gallega (thinly sliced octopus with paprika, salt and olive oil) and had already decided that if we weren’t offered them, we would have to ask. They were offered, along with sardinas a la plancha (grillled sardines) and a large goat’s cheese salad with a raspberry vinegar dressing.

This little restaurant is absolutely in the middle of the tourist trail and could so easily be a tourist joint serving expensive food with lacklustre service. It is quite the opposite, this is good food, well prepared and presented and very well priced, with tapas from 5€, salads from 8€, sardines from 6€ –10€ and paella from 11€.

The clochinas were small and sweet and delicious in a garlicky broth that we mopped up with chunky bread. The pulpo was soft and tasty with a nice kick from the paprika.

The service is quick, attentive and friendly. Everyone in the restaurant, the night we visited, looked genuinely happy and enjoying not just the food but the general ambience. Highly recommended.

We drank different wines – I chose a smooth Requena red Crianza wine and P a very good Rueda white wine. The salad arrived with a large round of grilled goat’s cheese perched on top and was an extremely generous serving filled with nuts and sultanas and that lovely raspberry vinegar dressing. The sardines, as you would

CHILL OUT

CAFÉ DE LAS HORAS Marc and his business partner Manuel found a large empty space just off the infamous Plaza de la Virgen and thought, “Let’s do something special. Let’s make a beautiful, handmade, intricate bar that people can come and be sophisticated and relaxed in and enjoy inventive beverages, candlelit ambience and feel at home”. Cafe de Las Horas was born in autumn 1994 and has been open 365 days a year since then. They brought cocktails and proper cups for any type of tea and infusions to Valencia. The decor is to die for, hand painted walls, gold leaf mirrors, man-made mosaic floors, stripped back beams, thousands of candles and candelabras, different sized tables and chairs, curtains and beautiful boys that serve you with love and care. The clientele have been faithful to Las Horas since day one and keeps getting bigger and better. anything from a bourbon and cava tea and slice of their famous homemade chocolate cake, iced coffee with a twist, to a cocktail that Marc has thought up that afternoon served in a beautiful, elegant glass. They are open every day of the year with a large terrace that looks on to the Plaza de La Virgen. This July enjoy their ‘REBAJAS’, when mixed drinks have 50% off from the 12th until the 18th. This makes a Cacique rum and coke a mere 3 euros, a Tanqueray and tonic 3.50 euros, an Absolut and orange 4 euros, and the list is endless. If you only go out Fridays and Saturdays, make the most of their 4 euros for a mixed drink of their choice offer from 21.00h until 24.00h every Friday and Saturday. And if that’s not enough, enjoy their last-Sunday-ofevery-month offer where all drinks and cocktails have 50% off. Cafe de Las Horas also enjoys theme nights, just last week when myself and

H popped in for a few drinkies with Marc, it was Dorian Gray night. The gorgeous waiters were dressed in Victorian attire, there was a smoke machine and a group of girls in amazing dresses posing around the bar and the nearby streets. Pop by and check out the calendar which is always on the door. All in all, a gorgeous place to enjoy a drink with a friend, a partner or a group of people at any time of the day any day a week. You will always feel welcome and you will always walk away with a smile and glamorous feel. BURN OUT OR CHILL OUT

Response to the Economic Recession Burn Out or Chill Out? Is it just me or is there anybody else out there that sees negative economic growth as possibly a good thing in a society that consumes five times more resources than the planet can withstand? Not long ago I came to realise that I may be alone in this respect as I spent a couple of days with acquaintances holed up Big Brotherstyle in a charming country house in the Castellón countryside, miles from any shopping malls to satisfy their urge to consume things they don’t need. Let me explain. These people’s idea of fun (and my idea of stress) means spending the day in the metal-and-glass womb of the mall, where they can do all under one roof – shops, cinema, shops, Scottish hamburger restaurants, shops, Internet cafés, and shops. One of the group is also a churchgoer and so spends a few hours on a Sunday following another God, but those of you who have read Saramago’s ‘The Cave’ will know that this service will soon also be provided in your local mall, no doubt at a reasonable price. One of Valencia’s many new malls that are springing up like mushrooms, Aqua, from which one has fantastic views of – well, another mall and a huge department store – also provides customers with a hotel on

top, so you never have to leave the mall itself. Ever. However, pressed by the economic crisis, my adventurous group of acquaintances had decided to spend a weekend in the beautiful Castellón countryside, and were wondering what one could possibly do there. I first suggested a stroll, which was met with stony silence from the plump gang, except for the two kids present who were wired on a high energy breakfast washed down with a well-known fizzy beverage. For obvious reasons I cannot name said drink, but suffice to say that it’s the one that has to maintain its ingredients in the strictest secrecy, lest they be overtaken by their main competitor’s identical product. (My years of journalistic investigation can now reveal, however, that said ingredients basically consist of: tap water, heaps of sugar, carbon dioxide bubbles, and addictively high levels of caffeine and additives. One can discover this mystery recipe cunningly printed where one would least expect it: on every can and bottle under the heading: ‘Ingredients’). Nevertheless, since nobody had any other suggestion (there was no TV!!!), the

group eventually trooped out of the house into the sunlight. As they headed for their cars, I pointed out that the path was not accessible to road transport. More groans and looks of mutiny. One of the group – out of respect for his anonymity, let’s call him R. Sole – was thus given a theme of conversation with which to break the boredom: a light on his dashboard had lately begun to flicker for no reason, which would mean another visit to those modern day druids, the mechanics. The irony is that Mr. Sole has worked for a supplier to a multinational car plant for twenty years yet is incapable of fixing a car he helped to manufacture. (Another irony is that, like many I know in my country of residence, he’s always complaining about the USA, yet has spent decades working for a U.S. company, avidly consumes U.S. products and follows a U.S. lifestyle). My own car is about to celebrate its 20th birthday and is doing fine (though scoffed at by this ever-competitive Big Brother gang). Any problem it has can generally be easily spotted, and any spare part I need can be found and recycled at the local scrap yard for a few euros. Let me stress that it’s not a question of money – I can afford a new car - but common sense needs and not problematic wants. You can’t fix zips, Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

but you can fix buttons. More technology, more problems. More features, more things to go wrong. This is a philosophy that I often apply to software. (And to life: more possessions, more worries…) The idea of a second-hand car is anathema to these people, however. To be fair, they work in the automobile business so I guess they’re only helping themselves. Nevertheless, they generally bought new cars on credit when they themselves were teenagers, and their houses – new and on credit – when they were in their midtwenties. Such loans are obviously an albatross round their necks now that they are faced with losing their jobs or pay cuts, something which they had apparently never contemplated before the economic crisis struck, caused by irresponsible lending – and borrowing. Mr. Sole himself had to decide that very weekend whether to accept a pay cut and less hours (hence more leisure time) or to let some of his less fortunate workmates and lifelong friends be laid off and potentially starve to death under a bridge along with their paupered, rag-clothed families. I asked him which option he thought he should choose. “Don’t know” was the vague reply. This famous reply appears in opinion polls in all countries around election time, when that mysterious 10 percent of the population – the ‘don’t knows’ – are the ones who can swing the vote and therefore have real power and the fate of all in their hands. They are of particular

demographic importance in times of true debate, not when the winning candidate is obvious (by ‘obvious’, I mean those popular characters who win landslide victories and tend to become thuggish dictators). In the Valencia region, there has recently been a stream of powerful politicians and influential people facing charges of fraud, influence peddling, perversion of the course of justice, bribery and fiscal fraud, with taxpayers footing the bill, all of which mysteriously never seems to find its way through the monolithic judicial system, whose presiding judges are sometimes suspiciously old friends of the accused. The ex-mayor of Xàtiva (Játiva) was caught on the microphone during an election campaign calling his townspeople “donkeys” for believing he would build them a beach. They promptly voted for him again. Far from damaging his career, he is now the president of the province of Valencia. Perhaps the most blatant example is the president of the province of Castellón, Carlos Fabra, famous for allegedly winning the lottery three times (a common Mafioso practice to launder money is to buy tickets off the winners). Not to mention the president of the entire Valencia region, Francisco Camps, accused of allegedly dividing up lucrative government contracts worth millions of euros to hand them to the company Orange Market (whose director is Álvaro Perez “El Bigotes”) without public tenders, purportedly in return for impressive gifts

to his friends and family (most famously, suits). Indeed, there is allegedly a recording where Camps calls Pérez a “little friend of my soul”. I mention this because such politicians do indeed continue to enjoy huge popular backing (the local population and victims often even come to applaud the suspected culprits as they leave police custody). While perplexed at such phenomena, I believe the reason can be found in the reply that many natives of Valencia give on these matters: “I’d do the same, wouldn’t you?” Well, no, actually, I wouldn’t, and I take offence that anyone may consider me to be so greedy as to have such an unethical thieving streak in me. Moreover, I am aghast that so many people apparently do. The next time a mugger steals my wallet I must remember to congratulate him for his initiative with a handshake and give him my credit cards, too; this seems to be the generally accepted thing to do in today’s society. The credit-driven consumer desire that has got us into such a fine economic and ethical mess has also had its environmental consequences on the planet and this region. But as I plodded through the country with Mr. Sole, I came to realise that these all have a simple solution, involving a different way of looking at life and the economy – to chill out, not burn out. All will be revealed in the next issue. TO BE CONTINUED... El Gazza Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

CLUBLAND Summer is in full swing and so is the season of terrace bars, clubs and all the July festivals in and around Valencia. Valencia offers a great selection of things to do in the summer, which is why I still feel like it’s my first summer here every year with new concepts and ideas that pushes the city on the map as a place to come and party on an International level. My first Secret Terrace party last month was an amazing start to the summer, bringing over 120 people from London and Valencia and we look to triple that for the end-of-summer event we have planned. Big thanks to my partners in the event Simon Jukes and Dougie Mac and we are looking forward to what we have up our sleeves. (www.secretterrace.com) Starting in the centre of town, my first exciting new terrace for 2010 is Parc de Capsalera, located near the Bioparc in the Parque de Cabecera by a tranquil lake in this intimate location. Open every day from 17.00h – 3.00h, it offers amazing food and relaxing drinks. From 24.00h watch out for live bands such as the ever-impressive Baron Dandy y Sus Rumberos, DJs such as Daniel Kyo and Marvin Deno, and I hope to see myself gracing the decks there over the summer months. With Daniel Kyo and friends on our minds, let’s not forget Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111). Though it does not offer the summer outside experience, it makes up for the quality of music they keep putting out to the city. This place is for lovers of underground dance music and it never disappoints. This summer look out for Huxley (Tsuba, UK) on July 9th and DJ Roland from the US on July 24th. Also good friends Dieciseis Cubos are there on July 23rd for some good local minimal and tech music talent!! (www. myspace.com/miniclubvlc) Excuse Me! (C/ dels Tomasos, 12) are still bringing their unique style of music to the city centre with their mix of space disco, cosmic house, and nu disco downstairs and rock & roll, indie and punk upstairs. This fusion of music makes for an interesting crowd never to disappoint. This month see a more local line-up with good friends Sais, Vladimir Dynamo and Nacho Marco as well has HAL 9000 and Dioni Sánchez holding down their residencies there in the hip barrio of Ruzafa. (www.myspace.com/excusemeclub) The Groovelives team offers three different venues across the city in LA3, Piccadilly and

47 Social Club. LA3, near the port, offers 3 rooms of electronic music with the main room bringing Zombie Kids on July 9th and they have Acid Party on July 24th, so watch out for some old school tunes. You will find more underground house / electronic music upstairs with resident Pablo Cebrián before LA3 will shut for the summer break in August. Piccadilly, located near the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, offer a cool late night venue (until 7.00h) all week. Nights of choice are Kinky Night on Wednesdays with ‘80s, ‘90s and kinky disco and the Friday and Saturday Populent parties, a mixture of events with guest DJs. Finally 47 Social Club in the Carmen is open Tuesday to Saturday night with a great mix of music and people. Watch out for Cosy O on Wednesday with his Disco Demolition black music night! See listings for all addresses. (www.groovelives.com)

the selection of 40 different cocktails and a special food menu will make this a popular venue open every day from 12.00h – 3.30h. ( www.laydown.es)

Barraca host two events in July worth going to. This club is famous throughout Spain, offering a piece of history into dance music culture in Spain for over 25 years. Located outside the city, it is worth the travel on July 10th for Ben Klock with resident Rafa Siles and We Are Not Drunk. On July 31st, Cocoon Night @ Barraca has Extrawelt Live! and one of Barraca’s up-and-coming producers, Samuel Knob. (www.barracamusic.com)

Not forgetting the other clubs on the beach up on Malvarrosa, Gandhara (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 225) has always been a great intimate venue with its Indian / Buddha-themed terrace for a more social late night gathering, though in the inside room they are dancing away. If you want to party all night and then walk straight onto the beach for the sunrise, then a visit to Akuarela Playa (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 152) is a must. This stunning ground floor terrace has a lush garden feel to it and everyone goes there to impress!!

Soul have moved to their summer location at Rumbo 144 (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 144) every Saturday night. DJ Cosy O and friends offer the most upfront R&B, hip-hop and soul music in Valencia. Well into their third year now, they are going strong and have a dedicated following. (www.soulvalencia. com) Now we hit the port area of Valencia where the summer is swarming with people partying on the numerous terraces. Estrella Damm Club (Edificio Veles e Vents, Port America’s Cup) opened their terrace back in May to great success and now is open every day throughout the summer from 12.00h – 3.30h. Home to some of the best DJ talent in the city, their parties go off! Great view mixed with well-priced beer and the best mojitos makes this a must-visit location in the port. (www.estrelladammclub.com) The newest addition to the port opens their doors on July 1st, when Laydown (Port America’s Cup) brings a bit of style with their beautiful new terrace restaurant and bar. All dressed in white, you would think you were at Nikki Beach in Miami with white sofas and beautiful people dancing their way into the night. Look out for the odd yacht turning up, as they even have their own mooring area to accommodate. Their speciality is

Once the bars in the port are shut, you don’t have to go far to carry on your terrace experience by visiting Las Ánimas Puerto. Open from 1.00h – 7.00h, this club has the largest roof terrace in Valencia, accommodating over 2,000 people with great music and a VIP area worth the money if you can get in, as it is situated in the middle of the club to impress your friends and sure to make many new ones!! Stay up all night and watch the sunrise light up the dance floor. Kind of a cool moment so take it in, turn your head back to the dance floor, look at everyone partying away and join back in!! (www.grupolasanimas.com)

Now to tell you about two amazing festivals going on in July that will receive international attention. Arenal Sound Festival from July 23rd – August 1st is located on the beach at Burriana near Castellón offering 100 DJs, 50 live acts and ten days of camping for only 150€!! Catch a huge array of national and international talent –for the complete line-up, visit the festival web site. (www. arenalsound.com) The biggest festival in Spain arrives for the 15th year in Benicàssim from July 15th – 18th. FIB Festival (www.fiberfib.com) is on a par with Glastonbury and other top European festivals. This year will see such live acts as Kasabian, Gorillaz, Hot Chip, Lily Allen, The Temper Trap, Calvin Harris and a favourite of mine, Prins Thomas (I am just touching the surface here). Expect to pay around 160€ – 180€ for tickets for the whole festival. I will be DJing at Water Poppers Pool Party Festival just next to the FIB festival with a line-up of other great local talent over the same days. See you on the terrace!!! VALENCIA WORLD experience to say the least. It was a bitterly cold January, the spindly trees that lined the boulevards were as bare as my pockets and yet, as I sat in a nameless cafe on my very first day, with no flat, no job and no ... erm... hablo español?, a wry smile from the waiter only served to heighten my optimism and excitement for the journey ahead – I’ve made it to Spain! Setting off on the job hunt, CV and a dodgy map in hand, I tackled the first in my makeshift list of language academies, and a trying experience it proved to be! As my first sun-filled day dwindled, along with my list of addresses and a sizeable portion of confidence, I scoured my remaining options.

Onwards and Upwards.

An English Teacher in Spain

After six months of living and working as an English teacher in Valencia (a feat that is hardly as easy as it may sound!), I only recently mustered up the courage to climb Valencia’s tallest bell tower, El Miguelete. And well worth the effort it was! A mighty 207 steps to the summit, the presence of El Miguelete can be felt throughout the entire Catedral area of Valencia’s historic centre, not only for its height but for the regularity with which its 13 bells sound over the city, chiming in every 15 minutes to signal the passing of the hours (not to mention waking me up most mornings!). It was precisely as I emerged onto its impressive terrace, peering out over Valencia’s sprawling mass that it suddenly struck me how this recent ordeal to tackle El Miguelete’s steep incline resembled another, more personal journey – from starting six months ago as a fresh-faced, fledgling teacher in Valencia to becoming an established resident in one of Spain’s most vibrant and exciting cities. Strike 1 – Difficult Beginnings The climb lies ahead. It’s daunting and the challenge towers over me. I feel for the first step and begin the ascent. Arriving in Valencia with nothing but a Ryanair baggage allowance and a teaching certificate was a frightening

One school left. I gather the remainders of my energy, take a deep breath and smooth down my dishevelled appearance. I attempt a step forward and manage, finally, to plant a firm foot in the door. Strike 2 – The Going Gets Tough! The climb continues and I’m beginning to lose my breath. I’m wading, swimming, almost drowning in a sea of language that fills every aspect of my life, leaving me gasping for air. Teaching English along with all its grammar, pronunciation, idioms, and vocabulary as I learn new and foreign ones every day is exhausting, but nevertheless enjoyable and incredibly satisfying. For the most part, my students are Valencia natives, and away from the confusing hustle of the streets, we can sit for hours chattering about anything from Spanish music and food to the secrets behind Valencia’s famous Fallas festival. It is here, in this small classroom space, that Valencia comes alive through the experiences of its people and as I come to learn and understand its way of life through the mentality and habits of the Valencians themselves, I begin to realise just how generous, welcoming and proud of their city these people really are. The hours pass and suddenly class is over. I glance at the clock, it’s nearly half past the hour. I gather my notes, wipe the board clean and shut the door behind our little square of Valencian England.

Strike 3 – Finding My Stride. As I settle into the pace, the journey’s becoming familiar and the challenge is diminishing with every foothold. It perhaps takes a little bit of work to really adjust to the Spanish rhythm of life but once the tempo is found, it’s even harder to escape it! The work hard, play harder mentality of the Spaniards becomes addictive and while teaching lasts until late in the evening, a taste of tapas and a strong mojito are enough to lift the spirits for another bout of sangria-scented fiesta! Life and routine find their pace and I step into time, joining the crowds en route down C/ Caballeros towards Plaza Tossal – the Carmen’s hub of nighttime revelry. El Miguelete chimes its third strike - it’s a quarter to one and the night is in full swing. Strike 4 – The Summit! Bright sunlight, blue sky, a million glistening roofs and meandering streets reaching out to the tower blocks and the dark smudge of the mountains beyond. The climb is complete and Valencia’s landscape comes into view. Suddenly the struggle of the ascent makes sense and the city comes alive from an entirely new and fresh perspective. Summer has arrived and Valencia flourishes into an even busier, bustling, lively mishmash of parties, cafedawdling, beach bronzing...and the odd bit of work, of course. Valencia has changed and not merely for the shift of seasons. Favourite haunts, familiar faces and happy memories fill what were once unknown houses, anonymous avenues and hidden street corners. This is Valencia. This is my Valencia and as the bell chimes its fourth strike to signal the passing of yet another hour, I know this is where I belong.

WOMAN

I have to be completely honest with you, until a month ago I had never stepped in a gym in my life. Like all women, I have tried endless ways of trying to get thinner, the latest being the silly maple syrup diet – Beyoncé did it for ‘Dreamgirls’! It has to work! – from eating boiled beetroot for dinner for a week to cutting out all carbs a la Atkins to the cabbage soup phase, but none of them work long term, especially with my addiction to toast. So this year I feel like at my age I need to start properly looking after my body as it does carry me around every day and needs to be treated a little better. I signed up to a gym with three friends, as I would probably give up after a week if I was on my own, and we meet up every other day for a workout. We have a personal trainer who is kicking us into shape and have such a laugh we get dirty looks from the die-hard gym buddies around us, but the trainer is so tough on us we are already seeing the effects! Maybe a little late in the game for getting those perfect beach bodies but definitely feeling firmer than last year. Plus we got a group discount! So its thumbs up all round, especially as I have my eye on several little flowery jumpsuits in the shops I’m hoping will be marked down in the sales which have already started. I went on day one straight out of work thinking, “It’s siesta time, there’ll be no-one around”, and there were queues out the door at every cash desk! I went with my new colleague N and Photo Mateo Sanchis. Article © 2010 24/7 Valencia

Talking of romance, I think I may have found my future husband through my New Job! I’m still not wearing suits and strutting around in high heels bossing people about, but I think I might have to next time we have a visit from the beautiful area manager - from speaking on the phone I expected a short and balding old man, but when I was introduced in person I literally went bright red and think I may have stuttered when he shook my hand. It’s now a joke around the office and we have to keep double checking the phone is on mute whenever anyone calls out that my lover is calling! I think I would be mortified.

in Accessorize we were very annoyed that none of the collections we love were reduced, but oohed and aahed so much in Zara at the 15 euro dress rail we actually walked out empty-handed unable to make a decision on any single one. I am hunting down festival appropriate outfits (though will probably end up wearing my trusty white tank tops and little skirts/shorts like every year), but the aforementioned jumpsuit is festival essential. It is common knowledge that my entire summer revolves around FIB – Festival Internacional de Benicàssim – and this year’s line-up is more varied than ever. Dizzee Rascal seems to me like the most random choice for Benicàssim – it’s usually indie and rock, pop and electronica that fill the tents and stages with their melodies and I’m excited to see what kind of crowd he brings in this year – it’s sure to mix things up a bit and maybe even set a precedent for more garage and R&B acts in the future! The summer months bring festival after festival to the country all up and down the coast, and I just love enjoying live music outdoors with a nice cold beer surrounded by my friends, I really couldn’t think of anything better. The Feria de Julio once again provides a lovely set of concerts in the Jardines de Viveros – if you can get to one the setting is idyllic, right in the gardens, and last year the walkway into the arena was paved with little lamps and the trees strewn with fairy lights – so romantic!

Having totally gorgeous bosses seems to be the only perk of the new job so far - everything else seems more or less exactly the same as my previous post but with different computers and the added ‘bonus’ that I get to train up five completely clueless newcomers, which is proving to be much harder than I thought. When I say clueless, I mean they really are starting from scratch in our field of work, not that they are dim. One of them, in fact, is so confident she has it down already she has taken it upon herself to explain to the others how things work – she even said, “It’s so easy!” and then proceeded to describe things all upside down and back to front, poor love. If she didn’t talk about herself all day I may feel a little bit sorry for her, but I don’t, so I’m just going to have to be very hard on her until she understands it all. Which, with my new whiteboard just put up last week, shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. Give me a marker pen and a big white space to scrawl on and I’m happy as Larry! I feel like a teacher, I may even get them to start calling me Miss. If all goes well, training should be over by September and maybe hunky boss man would like to take me out to dinner to celebrate! Have a fantastic summer, dear readers, and I’ll see you back here in the same place in two months time. I would like to send a big shout out and congratulations to all the 24-7 Valencia team for our 10 year anniversary! I’ve been a part of things for a big chunk of that time and it’s been great fun. Here’s to another ten!

Cycling in the Last Virgin Paradise It seems that the long rainy season has ended… at last! To celebrate, it’s time to go to the beach and enjoy the sun and the sea. This month we’re going to recommend refuge in one of the most virgin paradises of the country. El Cabo de Gata, in the province of Almería, is an incredibly beautiful area, still safe from the avalanche of bricks inundating Spain. We’re going to describe one route, taking us to the southern part of the nature park. To the north of the city of Almería, on the coast, starts the nature park, in the zone called Retamar, and its first village is the Cabo de Gata, or San Miguel de Cabo de Gata, where you can find somewhere to stay, restaurants, shops to buy provisions, and in the summer months, chiringuitos, beach bars which serve wonderful fresh seafood. In this first zone of the nature park, starting at the village, we can make an excursion on our bikes. If you leave the village in the direction of Almería, close to the edge of the sea, there is a little path that leads you through dunes and typical vegetation of the area, where you’ll see the wide variety of bird life that live in, or visit this humid area. Pass through the Rambla de las Amoladeras, full of these impressive cactus/trees that tower over you as you cycle. At the end you reach la Torre García, a tower once used as a watchtower to look for possible invaders coming from the sea.

But without doubt, the most important zone in the first part of the natural park comes after El Cabo de Gata. Take the straight road that leads you towards the cape (a road used time and again in car ads and films). To your right is the sea, and to your left is Las Salinas while bit by bit, you’ll be able to see the charming ancient church roof in front of you, like a guardian protecting a small fishing village. The name of this village is La Almadraba de Monteleva, and its name is derived from an ancient and special form of fishing used to fish tuna in pre-Roman times, consisting of installing a labyrinth of nets in the path of the tuna, which would normally run close to the coast. When La Almadraba de Montelva ends, there is a route to the left which runs between the skirts of a mountain and Las Salinas, where you can see many types of birds like pink flamingos, herons and storks (there are special viewing huts with descriptions of the birds for amateurs). At the end, the route makes a circle coming back to El Cabo de Gata. But this is only the start. If you continue from La Almadraba de Monteleva by road, you’ll come to a place as difficult to cycle as it is beautiful. From the steep foot of two mountains, you can see the Arrecife de las Sirenas, a beautiful volcanic formation rising out of the sea, and a bit further on is the lighthouse of El Cabo de Gata. If you still have energy left, take the uphill run to the Torre de la Vela Blanca, a watchtower built in the Moorish period. From there, you can see beaches stretching into the distance on both sides, such as Monsul and Los Genoveses, two of the most beautiful beaches in Spain, which you’ll hear more about in some other 24/7 issue.
