LENGUAS VIVAS

Emily Leighton-Smith and Olivia Morris are two English students who have come over to Valencia to study Spanish language and embrace the culture of Spain. Why did you decide to come to Valencia? We decided to stay in Valencia as it has everything that Madrid and Barcelona have to offer but in a smaller area. Not only do you get the beautiful beaches, you also have the historic, cultural side of the old town to visit.

Why do you want to learn Spanish?

Why did you choose Lenguas Vivas?

It is the second most-spoken language in the world. We have always loved to learn foreign languages and we studied it at school in England for GCSE and A levels. This year in Spain will help our confidence and fluency in speaking Spanish and will be a rewarding experience.

We are from the south part of England and Lenguas Vivas have been bringing students to the area where we live for the last five years. In this time they have promoted Spanish courses and we know other people who have studied over here and said it was an excellent school.

What do you do in your spare time in Valencia?

Do the school organise any social activities?

We love to play sport and thoroughly enjoy being by the sea. Whilst we have been over here, we have joined a basketball team and made new friends through this. We have been able to join in water sports, which is brilliant and different to England.

Yes, of course. We have classes in the morning and then the school organises activities in the afternoon and evening, going to the Albufera park, for example, trips to the city, activities on the beach. We have also visited many small villages around Valencia, all thoroughly enjoyable.

Do you think Spanish will help you in the future?

Would you recommend Lenguas Vivas to your friends?

Absolutely, my dream is to be a PE teacher abroad and being able to speak Spanish will open up opportunities to teach in many more countries. I am planning on coming back to Valencia after I have finished my degree to teach over here as I have enjoyed this city so much.

We will definitely recommend it to our friends for all the reasons above. Also, the staff were so friendly and helpful. So far, our Spanish has vastly improved and we could not ask for a better experience.

Valenbisi: Let’s Push Things Forward Apart from its confusingly irregular system of cycle paths, Valencia is a great place for riding a bike. The city is small and compact, there’s relatively good weather all year round and best of all, there are no hills. The two major problems cyclists face are the city’s tenacious cycle thieves and the inconvenience of having to lug your bike up and down stairs or into lifts at the beginning and end of every journey (we all know those tell-tale marks on whitewashed stairwell walls). All of which means that it made perfect sense when, following in the wake of Montreal, Paris (London was a month behind) and other Spanish cities like Zaragoza and Barcelona, the local Government announced its new cycle hire scheme. The much-vaunted “Valenbisi” began operating in some parts of the city (provisionally just north of the river from the Jardines Viveros to the beach) in June this year and new bike stops (or, if you prefer, docking stations) are

opening throughout the city every day. In the first month and a half, around 6,000 people have signed up and, according to Valencia mayor Rita Barberá, there is expected to be an “avalanche of new users in the autumn” as the scheme expands throughout the city. For those who live in Valencia the easiest way to sign up is to get the 18€ annual pass via the Valenbisi website (www. valenbisi.es). You can also register using a Tarjeta Mobilis. They’ll send you a smart card and a PIN number through the post (ours arrived in a matter of days) and you’re away. Find your nearest docking station, flash your card over the reader, put in your PIN, accept the terms and conditions and choose your bike. You then have to press the release button on the slot of your chosen bike and give the bike a good heave backwards (some of us seem to have problems getting it out of the slot at first). Then when you’ve finished, make sure you dock the bike correctly at your

destination (listen for the two beeps) or you may be liable if the bike is stolen. The pass gives you free access to the bikes for the first 30 minutes of a journey. Then they charge 50 cents for the next half hour and after that, it’s 2€ an hour. You can make as many under30-minute trips as you want in a day without incurring a charge, so if you need more than half an hour for your journey (not all that likely within the city) you can do a sort of relay by docking your bike at a station and picking up another one. As the price structure indicates, they’re not designed for long rides. If you want to do some exercise up and down the river or a day out in the wilds, you’d be better off hiring a bike from one of the many private hire places dotted around the city. The Valenbisi bikes are more for saving a bit of a walk, replacing a short taxi ride or avoiding the wait for a bus. This is just as well because the bikes themselves can be a little heavy

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

going. They need to be strong enough to take plenty of wear and tear and the odd beating from drunken vandals so they’re pretty solid. This means they are comfy enough but don’t go very fast. The gears have three speeds: slow, quite slow and not very quick. You won’t be seeing Chris Hoy on a Valenbisi bike any time soon. Nevertheless they are equipped with a good-sized basket and a lock if you need to pop into a kiosko for a paper (neither of which are available on London’s Barclays bike), dynamo lights and there’s a bell to ring at the many Valencians who enjoy stopping for a chat in the middle of a cycle lane. The scheme is clearly aimed at residents using the system all year round but there is a shorter, week-long registration option for those visiting the city. It’s quite costly at 10€ for the week plus the usual charges if you go over the half hour. If you are just after a bike for the day, you are much better going private hire. Even so, in the first six weeks more than 3,000 people have taken up week registrations. The major problem with this type of system is, of course, the availability of bikes. JCDecaux, the French company that runs the scheme in Valencia, photos Kaiko / Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

has promised to have 3,000 bikes in circulation in the system by the end of the year, when the scheme is fully up and running city-wide. However, every station has a limited number of bikes and slots so, at popular destinations and at popular times, you might find yourself without a bike or left with nowhere to redock your bike as all the slots are taken and your thirty minutes are nearly up. Those going to, say, a football match or the mascletà in Fallas or even to university on a Valenbisi bike are going to have some problems. The local councillor for traffic, Alfonso Novo, admits that, “these problems will occur but we will try our best to ensure it happens as little as possible”. JCDecaux, who also run the scheme in Paris where they have suffered from the ‘Montmartre effect’ (everyone wants to cycle down but no one wants to ride up) will try to combat this in Valencia by using trailers to move bikes around to where they are needed and leave free slots in the more popular destinations. There’s even an app available for your phone which tells you how many free bikes and slots there are at each station around Valencia at any given time. Those that don’t own a poncy palm warmer can also get the information

online via a normal computer. The bikes are all shiny and new now but over time they are going to deteriorate. People in Paris, where the scheme has been running for over a year, have taken to scanning the bikes at a stop, checking brakes, chains and air pressure before selecting their bikes and other cities have had serious problems with vandalism. The screen at the stop near me already has someone’s tag written all over it. It’s going to be up to JCDecaux and the local council to ensure the bikes and stations stay in relatively good condition or are replaced when necessary, which may make the whole thing too costly and push up charges. Despite the problems, however, Valenbisi has got to be seen as a positive and green-thinking addition to life in Valencia, even if it’s just to avoid an expensive taxi fare when you are travelling home after the last metro (can you be breathalysed on a bike?). If enough people use it and more road space is taken up by cyclists, it may even lead to a more extensive and less random cycle path system. You can only dream. FOOD

Otoño and Me September is here! Finally an end in sight to the relentless heat of summer - phew! As much as I love the summer, I am glad when it starts to cool again, similarly I love the hint of watermelon in the air when spring gets the jump on winter. I’m just glad we live in a city that has changing seasons and we can enjoy all of them. Valencia will be waking up again now after many places shut for August to escape the perilous heat. It’s a great time of year to be wandering the labyrinth of streets, checking the market and whiling some time away on the terraces. Autumn is a particularly lovely time of year, time to get back into the kitchen and get friends round for supper. I’m making a slow roast pork belly this month and although you may balk at being in the kitchen for any length of time at all - it’s not that cool yet - this is great because there’s very little to do prep-wise and you can leave the kitchen for hours at a time - even better.

Slow Roast Pork Belly

• 1-1.5 kg piece of pork belly • 1-2 tbsp Chinese 5 spice • 4 cloves garlic • 1 tsp white peppercorns • 1/2 tsp coriander seeds • 100 ml olive oil • Flaky sea salt - about 1 tbsp or so • 3/4 bottle good dry white wine • 500 ml homemade chicken stock

Have your butcher score the skin of the pork. Dry it well with paper towel and rub the Chinese 5 Spice all over the underside of it. Leave it, covered, in the fridge for 24 hours. Preheat the oven to 225ºC - 250ºC (depending on how accurate and hot your oven is - a gas one may need to be high and an electric fan forced one low). In a mortar and pestle, grind the garlic, white peppercorns, coriander seeds and olive oil until you have a nice, smooth, runny paste. Rub this all over the underside of the belly and place this side down in a baking tray. Dry the skin again with a paper towel and now work the sea salt into the scores. You want to use plenty of salt, but not so much that it forms a crust and may prevent the skin from crackling. Place the pork belly, skin side up, into the hot oven and leave it for 40 minutes to an hour. The skin should now be starting to form a nice crackle. Turn the oven down to 140ºC - 160ºC and pour in the wine and stock, taking care not to get it on the skin as you need this to stay dry. Cook at this temperature for another 45 minutes to an hour.

juices into a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer. Skim off any scum that rises and mix a couple of teaspoons of cornflour into a small amount of cold water and add this to the saucepan - cook, stirring for a few minutes until thickened. Transfer to a warm gravy boat. Slice the pork onto a serving plate and get your roast veggies out of the oven. Serve on nice warm plates with your favourite wine - a white that matches or is similar to the one you cooked with would be good, but red, if you like it will also go well. It’s what you like, really. I really hope you enjoy this recipe, there’s nothing quite like slow roasted pork belly, that tender, juicy and succulent meat that makes a perfect dinner when you want to make a real effort. But then again, it’s really effortless, it’s a long time cooking, but not much prepping on your behalf, so do give it a go. Until next month! Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

© 2010 24/7Valencia

If the skin is starting to blacken, cover loosely with foil. Now, turn the oven down to 90ºC - 110ºC and cook for a further hour. The pork may seem cooked to you, but you need this length of time for it to tenderise. Keep your eye on the stock and wine, if it is starting to burn off completely, add a little water, more stock or wine. This last hour of cooking is the time to cook your accompaniments, baked fennel with breadcrumbs and garlic, roast potatoes, cauliflower gratin, slowbraised cabbage - whatever you fancy. I particularly like fennel with this type of pork, its subtle flavour is a great stage for the pork. Parboil some fennel for 5-10 minutes, drain and set in a baking dish. Whilst this is happening, bring a little cream to a boil with garlic and once it’s thickened, pour it over the fennel, and sprinkle over some breadcrumbs that you’ve mixed with the chopped fennel tops and some finely grated Parmesan cheese. When the pork is done, remove from the oven and set aside, pour the pan

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CAROSEL RESTAURANTE We were having a discussion at a dinner party with friends one sweltering night during the summer about food. The crux of this particular discussion was whether food and drink should be treated so reverently and seriously. I have had meals over the years in restaurants where the atmosphere was charged with an overblown reverence for the food and the chef - and even the staff. I am certainly serious about food, but it is as much for fun and enjoyment that I eat out with friends as the food. I was fascinated in 2008 when Pascal Henri, a Swiss motorbike courier who had saved 30,000€ to visit 68 Michelin 3-star restaurants around the world in as many days, disappeared without paying the bill from Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli. It was restaurant number 40 and Adrià is said to be the world’s greatest chef, but Mr Henri just left the restaurant to get a business card to give a reporter. A Europe-wide search was mounted and the gastronomic world held its collective breath before he turned up back at his home a few weeks later. His excuse –well, basically, it was boredom: “Food, it’s not that important”, he said. Shame his number 40 wasn’t La Carosel here in Valencia. No Michelin stars (yet), but Mr. Henri would have had a bit of respite from all that seriousness. We arrived at La Carosel, knowing already from a friend who eats there regularly that we were in for a treat. Every meal is a set menu put together with flair and imagination and, above all, fun.

The fun began when we were handed a party bag containing three smaller ones! One had a delicious selection of olives and guindillas, the second with fried dried habas (broad beans), and the other with little savoury biscuits - a nice little aperitif, with a selection of little wrapped sweeties and a chuppi chup for later! Our starters arrived on a big scrubbed wooden tray: Crema de foie, ice cream of maize with a duck slice. Lemon sorbet topped with a finger of toast and smoked mackerel. An escabeche of aubergine, tomato, peppers and onions with drippings of black olive tapinade and little pieces of sardine. A skewer of delicately tempura-ed vegetables with a sweet chilli dip. A paper cone filled with crispy coated goujons of chicken. A lovely colourful mix of salad – a variety of leaves, cherry tomatoes, ribbons of carrots, dried roast onion, roasted pipas (uniquely served in a cellophane bag) with a delicious tuna and mayonnaise dressing to mix with it. All this was accompanied by a fantastic selection of homemade breads, including sesame breadsticks, lovely heavy brown rolls, and some tomato breads served with rich grated tomato in a very tasty virgin olive oil. We did comment to the amiable chef Jodi that maybe he should consider selling his breads over the counter, too! D particularly liked the escabeche and the tempura while I loved the foie and the escabeche, though all these little dishes were delicious. Our main course was still to come – two pieces of fish both perfectly cooked, a swordfish steak griddled in butter with a drizzle of parsley oil and a lightly battered tail of monkfish served with wedges of fresh Valencia lemon. To round off our meal there was a light

and sweet chocolate dessert, espuma of marscapone with a sorbet of carajillo on a bed of crunchy biscuit and chocolate. The room is large and airy and was well over half full on the night we went. It was great to see everyone’s faces as the food arrived – big smiles followed by approving and satisfied looks as they tucked in to this excellent food. The wine list is small and well-priced and includes champagnes (from 39€) as well as cavas (from 12€), French wines (from 14€), Italian wines (from 18€) and Spanish wines (from 11€). We had an excellent tinto – Frailes from Fontanars (Valencia) and a small carafe of Mistela after our dessert. We chatted to owner/chef Jordi Morera, who is from Alicante and has worked in Venice and Rome prior to opening La Carosel. He thinks food should be great and should entertain, too, and he has certainly pulled it off. He offers a smaller version of what we had each weekday with a rice (paella or fideuá) for lunch at 15€ and the evening menu is 22€, a fantastic value. The menu changes every week. Seriously good food and great fun. CHILL OUT

ZUME - SUCS I CÒCTELS Freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and health-conscious eating has got more and more popular in the rest of Europe during the last couple of years, and finally Valencia is getting into it, too. When you’re hungry and thirsty, what’s nicer than a massive glass of fresh juice made in front of you and a homemade, filled-to-the-brim crêpe whilst sitting in a comfy chair in a cool and chilled out atmosphere? Mouth watering yet? Pop into Zume. Three lovely Brazilian boys who have lived and worked in Valencia for the past couple of years have had the amazing idea of opening a juice and crêpe bar in the heart of the old town, El Carmen. The boys are health gurus and want to help you get your recommended 5 A Day with their delicious juices. As we all know, Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

these 5 A Day help us to prevent heart problems, cancer and hypertension, give us vitamins, minerals and natural enzymes, and keep our bodies full of healthy energy so we can keep up with today’s manic lifestyles. Their start product is Açaí, an Amazonian berry that they crush with banana into a paste and mix with cereals and other fruits for a brilliant boost of energy with a surprising taste. This has always been popular with surfers, and now the boys at Zume are one of the only chill out bars in Valencia to bring it here in its pure state. Shocked and horrified by so much healthy talk coming from me, the queen bee of cocktails and naughty eating? The boys aren’t mad. They also offer a fab wide range of cocktails, and you can ask for a dash of spirits in any of

their juices. Fancy something warm? Try one of their delicious teas brought over from Málaga. Hungry? Have a crêpe filled with fresh produce from round the corner at the Central Market! Pop into Zume any day of the week from midday and try something from their menu, kick back, and enjoy! Chilling, Not Burning... In the last issue we saw how my consumer-mad acquaintances had been forced by economic circumstances to find ways of enjoying themselves without spending money they don’t have. Valencia is the perfect place for this – both the city and the region. The city itself is pleasant enough for a stroll and one can cross it on foot, bike or roller blades due to its lack of hills and size (I’ve come to the conclusion that around 1 million people is the perfect size for a city). There is some beautiful and even spectacular countryside to be found, too, without the huge traffic jams and distances one gets used to on excursions from a bigger metropolis. However, I happened to be spending the weekend with people who have lived their whole lives here but, like many who are not tourists in their own land, are not aware of the gems that their region has to offer. We were walking amid a mountainous cork forest in the province of Castellón. The group came to a clump of wild asparagus. I picked some, washed it from the water bottle, and popped it in my mouth, savouring the fresh flavour, and offered some to the kids. They warily backed off like vampires from garlic and their parents gave

me an admonishing, startled look at my irresponsible audacity on offering their children unadulterated food which had not come out of the standard plastic wrapping. In Valencia there is a surprising amount of fresh food literally falling off trees on semiabandoned lands that are no longer cultivated. I myself bought a nice plot of almond trees that was being left unattended, though around autumn and winter in the lands of Valencia you can find sackloads of such produce, not to mention oranges, simply lying around and going to waste. This may be due to cheaper imports, though a recent truck drivers’ strike shed light on the mysterious matter of why food prices shoot up from the farm to the shop in Spain and many countries. Lately, many Indian immigrants have set up greengrocer shops in Valencia (each immigrant community in Valencia seems to corner a certain market), creating a humorous contact language with their perceived spelling of their goods. Since they buy their produce locally from the dwindling ‘huerta’ (the market gardens surrounding the city), the truck drivers’ strike meant that the unaffected Indian shops were fully stocked with local produce whilst the local Valencia supermarket

chains ironically had suspiciously empty shelves. Anyhow, it may be cheaper to import almonds, and there is a simple mistrust of natural, matt-coloured oranges as opposed to the shiny, waxed and therefore more expensive version we find on supermarket shelves. Even so, one could quite possibly live in Valencia all year round on a great variety of food without the need to even visit a shop, provided one is prepared to work a little on the land. And by little I mean very little. Recently I was reading a text by the agricultural scientist Jack Harlan in a book by the anthropologist FernándezArmesto, in which he had studied the life of hunter-gatherers such as Bushmen and was astounded at the findings. The average hunter-gatherer spends only twenty hours a week working. Contrary to popular belief, they fully understand agricultural techniques such as planting, pruning, protecting plants and harvest times, and even own land themselves. The only difference is that they don’t stay in one place but move around according to the seasons. Their diet is also very healthy due to its great variety, and they suffer less chronic illnesses and tooth decay than in the Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

developed world. Obviously I am not suggesting that society should return to its hunter-gatherer origins, but it is a sobering thought that our prehistoric, cave-dwelling ancestors probably enjoyed far more leisure time than our advanced industrial society. Where did we go wrong? As we came to a clearing with magnificent views, everybody gratefully agreed to stop and snooze, apart from the kids who set about a headless chicken-style improvised football match and then went to climb a nearby walnut tree (abandoned, natch). I got out my notebook and plug-in modem, and decided to get some work done. This surprised all present, as they assumed that because they lead such stressful lives they get more work done than myself. In fact, as many of you know, one of the great advantages of modern technology is that you can take your office with you. Some say you should “leave your work at home” but this to me is simply a state of mind. I know of people who leave their phone at home, and then spend all day worrying about missed calls. Like a modern day cyber hunter-gatherer, however, I have the great advantage of being able to take my work with me and to a certain extent plan my working hours and calendar. With my notebook or Blackberry I am safe in the knowledge that I am not losing

attractive offers of work. And when there is no work, I can brush up on typing skills, software, go on courses, etc., ready for when it comes in. I can recommend such a lifestyle to all, and can assure you that many jobs today can be done in this way. The afternoon wore on and MrR Sole continued snoring loudly and contentedly to the amusement of all, particularly his wife. She was pleasantly surprised as he had been suffering insomnia of late due to his impending decision brought about by the economic crisis. I reminded her that so far that day we had not spent a cent, were getting exercise, and the kids were out of her hair and burning off their excessive sugar intake. Roused at last by his grumbling belly, her husband finally came to. He looked about at the lush pine scenery, the butterflies and bees hopping from flower to flower on the cherry trees, the kids laughing. Finally, he said dreamily: “I could do with more of this”. I think we all could. And I hope Mr. Sole will become Mr. Soul and consider his fellow workers and the long-term future of his company before the credit-driven consumer desire that has got our planet into this fine environmental, economic and ethical mess in the first place. The accepted wisdom, or dogma, is that we need to consume

goods and services so as to give people jobs providing them. However, if we consume less, then we also need to work less to survive, too. All I’m saying is that we can see the glass half-full and appreciate it. If work is slack, then have a beer on the beach instead of a Chianti in the wine bar, and invite your friends round for a healthy dinner instead of dining at McOysters or the Ritz. Buy local, not imported, and help your local economy as well as your own. Enjoy the free time while it lasts (preferably not in the mall buying things you don’t need). Pace yourself and prepare for the boom times round the corner; your mental and physical health is also important. My advice for seeing out the recession: chill out, don’t burn out. It seems to me that the modern world only concentrates on the means for finding happiness (which is usually understood to be a booming economy alone) and not the end in itself. Like many native English speakers living in Spain, when I first came here I rejected a far better paid job and career to take up a badly paid, shaky one here. But as I sat on the beach, swam under waterfalls and danced till dawn, I knew I had made a wise move. After all, the job was only the means to an end. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Hard T imes Here we go again, another season of highs and lows, of frustrations and exaltations, in short another football season following Valencia Club de Fútbol. It couldn’t have got off to a better start after a tremendous 3-1 win away from home against Málaga. In the team’s first game without Silva and Villa, many wondered who would step up to fill the gap. Valencia’s’ most expensive signing Joaquin turned out to be the man who dominated proceedings. Valencia went one up after Aduriz, making his league debut for the Chés, headed in directly from a corner, which is a first in my lifetime anyway! And then Joaquin played a sublime angled ball to Mata who failed to round the keeper. Málaga equalised with a flukey, deflected free kick but were worth the draw at that stage of the game. After the break, Valencia showed a lot of ambition and continued to press and were rewarded when Joaquín also benefited from a deflected shot and Valencia were 2-1 up. Málaga had a glorious chance

to equalise but César palmed away Rondon’s goal bound header. The Chés third and decisive goal was a cracker, little Jordi Alba whipped in a cross from the left, Aduriz nodded it back and yet again Joaquín stepped up, unleashed a thunderbolt volley and up went the shouts of “start the bus”. So with three points in the bag came a two-week break for international football, in which for the first time in many a moon Valencia had no representative in the full Spanish national squad. Villa and Silva have gone, Marchena after many years defending the Valencia shirt has moved up the road to Villarreal, and Mata was deemed surplus to requirements. This is just a sign of the times of the situation at Mestalla, gone are the days of big stars and squad players and the cruel reality is that the team has had to sell its more established players to raise money. Another player that was sold was Alexis, which caught most people by surprise, then again he has struggled with injuries and has never realised the potential he promised. V.C.F had to move quickly to fill the gap left by Alexis and moved for Mario Stankevicius (I hope my kids don’t want a shirt with his name printed

on, it’ll cost a bomb) so Emery has the squad he wanted except for the fact that Fernandes stayed. All bases seemed to be covered and after the Málaga performance it seems that the squad are implicated and determined. However the defence did still seem to be too leaky and the opposition was, after all, only Málaga (no disrespect) and the upcoming games

The squad seems to have a decent blend of youth and experience and an amazing number of ex Valencia players, Del Horno and Nacho González have been loaned out, whilst Cerra, Pallardo, Xisco and Juanfran have all worn the “blanc i negre” at one stage in their careers. The club have also made a couple of great signings bringing in Sergio, Valdo and Javi Venta to add valuable knowledge to the squad. A last minute loan signing was Felipe “Milli Vanilli” Caicedo from Manchester City, let’s hope he has a better time here than he did up north. It’s not going to be easy for Levante and their immediate aim must be to stay up, anything beyond that is a bonus. Let’s hope they can pull it off as the Comunidad Valenciana proudly boast four teams in top-flight football.

Banega is the midfield star

hopefully will tell us just exactly where we are. The calendar has been favourable to the “blanc i negres” as Valencia look to ease themselves into the season with ties against Racing Santander, Hércules, Atlético Madrid and Sporting Gijón.

This season also is more interesting with the welcome return to top-flight football for Levante UD. On the contrary to their city neighbours, Levante have had a tough draw to kick-start the league. They lost at home against Sevilla after leading

This season will not be easy for football lovers in Valencia be your team one or the other but as the late, great Jock Ewing once said “Any man can win when things go his own way, it’s the man who overcomes adversity that is the true champion”. Let the football commence. Mark Hulton

See listings for football calendar

Let’s not forget that this season we have Champions league football as well and the draw has also not been unkind to Valencia. Their three rivals in the group stage will be Glasgow Rangers, Bursaspor and Manchester United. United apart, the other ties should allow Valencia to gain access to the next round and more importantly, more money. The Valencian President, Manuel Llorente received a lot of criticism for selling the club’s best players, yet the situation in which Valencia find themselves leaves him no choice. V.C.F. have banked 88 million euros this summer and have spent around 25 million and we have to realise that this is the path the club must take to keep its head above water. Llorente is not the cause of the problem, he is trying to find the solution after the disastrous reign of Soler. So let’s get behind the team, enjoy the football and amunt Valencia.

FIB 10 was a special one. New owner Vince Power, the mythical music mogul, is turning this festival into a truly international affair that looks set to grow in the years to come. Clubbers, indie-rockers, sunbathers and ravers from around Europe all turned up for a long party of music and fun in the sun. As we have been doing since the early noughties, a fair number of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team enjoyed El Festival Internacional de Benicàssim in the flesh. We got to meet a lot of the artists in person, including John Lydon and Ian Brown, and there was plenty of partying with the rest of the festival goers and some fantastic live concerts to boot. These exclusive photos are by our resident professional photographer Kaiko. He spent the whole week out there just for you. It’s a hard life!

VALENCIA WORLD What are the things you like, and dislike, about Valencia? I loved my first ‘honeymoon’ year. I remember being amazed that I could drink in bars until the early hours and party ‘til dawn. My first Fallas festival was very special. I do like Fallas, although the novelty has worn off over the years. But I still get a kick out of showing the festival to my friends when they come to visit. Valencia drivers literally drive me crazy. I wish they’d use their indicators occasionally and think where they want to go a few seconds before arriving at a roundabout.

CRAIG WEALAND Tell us a bit about your background in Britain. I’m an Essex boy. I spent my formative years growing up in Ilford, but I left the UK in my early 20s to travel and work. Apart from visiting family and friends, I haven’t really been back there since. Interestingly, just the other day a friend asked me if I would go back to the UK if I ever left Spain. I don’t think I would. What brought you to Valencia, and what do you do here? Actually, my family came here before I did. My parents, my sister and brotherin-law all moved to a small village south of Valencia called Moraira in 1996, and I followed them out here a year later. I’d just finished a teaching contract abroad, and I had to decide whether to move in with a mate and look for a teaching job in London, or come over to Spain. Hmmm…..grey, rainy, miserable London or a sunny spot on the Med? It was a nobrainer for me, although I honestly didn’t know if I’d like living in Valencia, or Spain, before I came. I didn’t speak Spanish either. Some say I still don’t. I teach English at the British Council. I’ve been there part-time since I arrived in Valencia. I also run a website with my Spanish friend, Luis, called La Mansión del Inglés. It’s a free site which helps Spanish speakers learn English. We also sell CDs on the site to earn some extra cash.

Customer service can be pretty bad here, too, although I think it’s getting better. Maybe when people in Valencia fully realise that giving good service and going that extra mile for a customer will improve their business in the long run, then this city may catch up with Madrid and Barcelona in this respect. I’m not keen on the summer heat, but I love those bright, sunny spring and autumn days when the light is intensely clear and clean and the breeze is blowing in off the sea. Life just doesn’t get much better than that. On the whole, I am very happy here. The people are warm and friendly and they have a great attitude to life. I’ve travelled quite a lot and most of what I’m looking for in a place can be found in Valencia, but I guess it’s a personal thing. Valencia isn’t for everyone. What changes you have seen in this city over the last 10-15 years?

cosmopolitan, down-to-earth and bohemian. You can still find a few ‘spit ‘n’ sawdust bars’ and you don’t have to sell a kidney to buy a couple of beers. Tell us about Active English. What is it and how does it work? Active English is a social networking and language exchange group that Gary Smith and I started a few months back. It encourages Spanish and English speakers to get together and do stuff they are interested in. We’ve been on walking trips and cinema visits to see films in original version (with a drink after to chat about the film). We’ve also been to pub quizzes in English, and someone kindly offered to take a small group sailing out of Dénia this summer. At the moment we’re doing it though Google Groups, and members can suggest and organise activities themselves by posting an idea and testing the response. Photography outings, video groups, cycling trips, Trivial Pursuit/Scrabble evenings, pub crawls and cooking classes have all been suggested. There are about 60 members, but it would be great to get some more native English speakers involved. It’s free to join and people just pay for their own cinema ticket, drinks, etc., or contribute to petrol if they go in someone else’s car. People need to join the group to receive information. Activities are posted on the Google Groups page and anyone can come along.

Prices have gone up a lot. I suppose that’s the result of European integration and Valencia’s increasing visibility on the European stage. The port area has been cleaned up considerably. There isn’t nearly as much drug pushing and prostitution ‘a la vista’, although it’s a shame there aren’t more parks and green areas instead of yuppie bars and expensive restaurants. After all, the port is public land. Speaking of yuppies, El Carmen has changed a lot since I got here. I prefer the atmosphere in Ruzafa. It’s more

WOMAN

It’s back to school, folks! I have had the most incredible, non-stop, crazy, spontaneous summery Summer, for about the first time in history, despite the fact that I have only had two weeks off the whole time. I’ve been all over the country and even out of it, from Benicàssim to Perpignan to Ibiza to Madrid and Rocafort (ha!) – it’s been beautiful. In fact, I suddenly realised around August 15th that my fridge and cupboards were completely bare as I hadn’t actually eaten in for about five weeks... Usually though, I am so bah-humbug about the heat I am praying for Autumn and Winter to come around, so things can go back to normal, everyone will be back in the City and we can relax back into our usual routine. I had obviously not seen the benefits of people being away before now – what better way to spend quality time with absent friends and let them show you new sights and sounds and their favourite places in their new habitats than to visit them in Summer? I’ve grasped onto any glimpse of spontaneity I’ve been offered, desperate to do something different to forget about the heat. The day the thermometer outside work flashed 50º I was dashing to the port to catch the ferry to Ibiza – thank goodness! It may have been the only time in my life I actually would have rushed back IN to work, thankful for air conditioning!!! Some friends in Bétera saw temperatures soar to 55º and I fear this may be the way of things to come in the future, so am hoping my friends decide to migrate to far chillier climes such as Denmark or Iceland and I can visit them there during Spanish summers. Work at My New Job is so slow it is excruciating to actually watch as the Photo Kaiko. Article © 2010 24/7 Valencia

day after two months and am desperate to dig out boots and scarves and jackets again, happy as Larry I may have been this year to kick about in sandals and flipflops, flowery dresses, little jumpsuits and even tinier denim shorts.

hands on the clock do not move, but it’s another Spanish Summer thing and I know that September will be crazy busy so I should have been making the most of things. However, I am one of those people who would rather have a million things to do than none, and when one of the most exciting things to happen the whole of August was an ant infestation under my desk, I nearly locked the door so the fumigator couldn’t get in, so dull were the days. Summer Nights, of course, in El Carmen get busier every year and for a week at the beginning of August, you could not move for Italians wherever you looked, which was fun - if you went to an Italian restaurant and sat on the terrace as they passed by in their droves you could have been forgiven for thinking you were on holiday in Milan or something. Until mid August, that is, when the streets are invaded by crazy Australians in town for La Tomatina. The Fanatics lot, in their yellow, Heinz ketchup-inspired matching T-shirts, ripped and customised to flaunt rippling abs, bulging pecs, cleavage and belly-button piercings, are the most outrageously outlandish, especially at night when they hit the streets in packs like a river of loud and lary mustard, but I do love the Aussies in general. I think it’s because they share an almost British politeness with us, but they’re just so much fun, and so nice and kind with it. I went to the Tomatina myself, with thisisvalencia.com’s coach tour, and aside from Californians, Asians, Brits and Americans, I’d say about 80% were from Down Under, and what a lovely bunch they were. It may even be an alternative destination for my holidays next year, when I’m tired of hot sunshine every single

One could say I am an Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (unofficial) resident, really, as there is not a year I have missed the four days of music, art, fashion, theatre and more, and 2010 was no different. Plus I had to be witness to the changes Irish super-mogul Vince Power had put in place since he now basically runs the show. Not going to harp on about that, it’s old news, but the festival does play a helping hand in providing the seasonal soundtrack to my life, as I whizz around the place under the hot hot sun. (I’m not going to let it drop, it’s been really, really hot here, O.K.?!) With the Temper Trap and Two Door Cinema Club being my absolute faves of the weekend, my girl Ellie Goulding who I have been raving about in this column more than enough over the past year, absolutely stole the stage when she nabbed no-show Lily Allen’s (we now KNOW she’s pregnant, like it wasn’t obvious) spot on the Green Stage. Can’t get enough of her! She was brilliant. My pal Lolita Devine was incredulous after discovering I had not heard of Eliza Doolittle yet, and after getting myself a copy of her debut album I was dancing around in my knickers to ‘Skinny Genes’ in no time. It’s seriously that good. A pep-you-up potpourri of happy music if ever you heard one. I love September for many reasons, though I hate the darker mornings and shorter days (sure sign of Winter Coming!), and Valencia Fashion Week with all its naturally glam and not-so-glam-buttrying-really-really-hard attendees has to be one of them. Bumped into some guy-friends at Miquel Suay who’d never been to a show and thought they’d get tickets on the closing Friday to start off their evening looking at pretty girls – only to find it was Suay’s Spring/Summer ‘11 men’s collection. Too funny for words. Then had photos taken with best bud Miss R. by official photographer, only to see her check over the photo, make disgusted face, and practically shudder. Not funny at all. Formentera, the Little Balearic Paradise Years ago, in a previous 24/7 issue, we talked about a real paradise close to us, Formentera. Now, there are a few good reasons to go there and enjoy this incredible island, like new ferries from Valencia and more companies have opened routes in the last few years. There’s also another reason to take your bicycle on a ferry – La Volta a Formentera en Mountainbike is a tour created for mountain bike riders. Well, now some of you may think it’s a bit late to go there, because August has gone… but it’s not true. In August, the island is packed with tourists, especially Italians, and it could be risky and even dangerous to cycle around the little pearl of the Balearic Islands. September is perfect, lovely weather, less tourism… and if you decide to go and join La Volta a Formentera en Mountainbike, it will begin Saturday, October 30 and end on Monday, November 1 (for details, check http://www.formenterabtt.com). You can take a ferry from Valencia, or you can cycle down to Dénia, where you’ll have different options and companies to get there. It’s possible to rent bikes in the port, but I advise taking your own or renting before you go, given that the majority of what’s available there are typical city-style bikes (not great quality…), if there’s anything left to rent. I still remember my first visit where we had to rent city bikes with no gears and I suffered, but you’ll understand this better later on. Once you’re on land, I recommend discovering the prettiest part of the island, which means heading towards the south in the direction of Sant Ferran de ses Roques. Just past this village, a long stretch of coast starts that seems from the distance to consist only of rock. But it isn’t. Between the rocks that make up the coast, there are little coves with beautiful pale sand…and if you take photos of the spectacular turquoise water on this stretch of the coast, you can say you’ve been to the Caribbean and everyone will believe you. A bit further on you get to Es Caló, an old fishing village that was until recently

dedicated to catching the delicious lobster of the area. (If you can possibly stretch to it, you really should try a ‘caldereta de langosta’, an unforgettable experience. The lobster from the island is the most delicious in the world). Then after Es Caló, there’s a gradual change in the scenery. Pine trees start appearing, and then the woodland starts to become denser. We are on the hill towards La Mola, a reasonably challenging ascent, particularly on a heavy bike with no gears. The first time we went, the rental bike got the worst of me, and we had to walk up together. On the way up there’s a bar. It’s nothing special, but from its terrace you can see the most beautiful views I have ever seen in my life. The island spreads before your eyes, with the sea on both sides. After getting your energy back, continue up to La Mola, the highest part of the island, and from the lighthouse there, more stunning views of the sea await you. You will no doubt see a few lagartijas, little lizards with an incredible intense green colouring never seen elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Leave La Mola and head towards the beach of Mitjorn, a different kind of territory as there is a great difference between north and south coasts on all the Balearic Islands, above all due to the intensity and orientation of the wind. This part of Formentera has long sandy beaches, calmer, warmer water, and is also a lovely place to enjoy the sea. After leaving this area, go towards Es Cap de Barbaria, the second highest point of the island, to take in the views from this vantage point. The next destination could be Cala Saona, somewhat hidden and far from the more touristy nucleus, to move again towards La Savina and arrive in Es Pujols. This area is completely flat, and from here you can see the two lagoons of the island, Estany des Peix and Estany Pudent. To complete the visit, there’s one more magical spot on the island: the northern point, Es Borronar. If you go towards the north, at some point you’ll have to abandon your bikes, because from here on in, it’s sand, sand, sand. In some places it’s really amazing, with only 20 or 30 metres of sand between each side of the island. At the end you’ll find the island of S’Espalmador and some days, depending on the tides, you can get to the island by foot. © 2010 24/7 Valencia
