¡Si! 24/7 Valencia is celebrating its 10th anniversary year with a string of concerts and fiestas in this fun-loving month of October. All of our readers are invited along to check out some exciting bands, dance till the early hours and meet like-minded night people! It all climaxes on October 31st at LA3. There will be a wild live set by highly popular Valencia band ‘La Pulqueria’ and then a party till well past the dawn, which is how it should be on Halloween! See the ‘Clubland’ article & the agenda for more details… 24/7 Valencia is the longest-established monthly magazine about Valencia in any language and it is the only one recommended by all of the international media, including The Times, El País, Guardian Unlimited, Lonely Planet, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, CNN.com, Footprints, Thomas Cook, Business Traveller magazine and many more. We are also recommended by the local media of Valencia including the main Valencian television channel Canal Nou, local paper ADN, sports paper Superdeporte and the renowned newspaper Levante EMV. All of these local media have featured reports on ‘24/7 Valencia.’ We are told that this is a magazine that is “loved by the locals, followed by the expats and enjoyed by visitors.”

In ‘Chill Out’ we visit Café Lisboa, one of Valencia’s coolest café bars in the old centre with a fantastic terraza. It’s a favourite of ours and we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy it too. Lovers of Thai cuisine are in for a treat as we send our expert restaurant reviewer to the Thai Gardens, for a lovely dinner in sumptuous surroundings. Ryanair are returning to Valencia and we have an entertaining piece on them by our writer El Gazza. You can tell that he has been on a few of their flights over the years! Whatever your experience of budget airlines, Ryanair being back in Valencia is great for the local economy and tourism. Thumbs up! We dedicate this packed October edition to all the traditional pubs that have supported ‘24/7 Valencia’ over the last ten years. This one goes out to Finnegans, St Patrick’s, Sherlock Holmes, The Guinness House and Portland Ale House. Indeed, you’ll find a photographic report on the traditional pub scene in this month’s colourful issue.

Cheers! See you next month… 24/7 Valencia team

King Jaume I

Get the Flags Out! It’s the 9th of October At the beginning of the year every Valencia native checks the calendar to see if there is any chance of a puente between Valencia Day on the 9th of October and the Fiesta del Pilar on the 12th. The peculiar Spanish art of the puente consists of bridging the gap between national holidays and weekends by taking the days which fall in between as holidays, too. So if the fiesta falls on Tuesday, you may as well say the Monday is also a holiday and if you’ve got two holidays in the same week (as sometimes happens in October) why go to work at all? Tragically, this year the 9th of October falls on a Saturday while the 12th is a puente-friendly Tuesday. Nevertheless, as the anniversary of the reconquest of the city, it is always an important and, for some, controversial day in the Valencia calendar. On the morning of the 9th of October 1238, King Jaume I (like many people in Valencia after him) woke up feeling a bit groggy after spending the night in Ruzafa, where his army was camped. After brushing off a bat that had settled on his tent which he took

to be a sign of good luck (so legend has it) and later incorporated into the city’s coat of arms, he looked up to see that the Aragon flag was flying over the minaret of the great Mosque. This was a signal from the Moors that they had surrendered and the six-monthlong siege of the city was over. He then probably had a glass of ‘orxata’ (a traditional Valencian drink) and some ‘fartons’ (a traditional Valencian sweet snack) before marching into the city and taking control of Valencia on behalf of Christendom and the Kingdom of Aragon. And thus, we are told, ‘El Reino de Valencia’ was born. The actual ‘cuatre barrada’ flag (the four red stripes on a yellow background of the Aragon kings) which the Moors raised on that day has survived. It is known as the ‘Penó de la Conquesta’ and is on display in the museum in the Ayuntamiento (City Hall). As we will see, flags play an important role in the whole 9th of October thing. Valencia myth has it that, as the gates were flung open, the Valencians in their delight ran out to the fields to gather fruit and vegetables in their neckerchiefs to offer to

the liberating army. It seems more likely that the starving citizens were actually running out of the gates to scrabble together some food for themselves after months of siege. Nevertheless the story is remembered in the tradition of the ‘Mocadorà’ when, on the 9th of October, gifts of marzipan in the shape of fruit from the Valencia huerta (countryside) are wrapped in a neckerchief, or these days a silk scarf, and given to wives and girlfriends in Valencia. Traditionally the wife gets to keep the scarf while the husband wolfs down the marzipan. These romantic ideals of the birth of a nation and liberation are, of course, farcical. The majority of people living in the city were lowly peasants who didn’t give a fig which bunch of ruffians were in charge, but given the choice, they had been living relatively peacefully as Moors for 500 years and so were unlikely to have been too elated when a load of unwashed Northerners and Hungarian mercenaries took over. It was only the city of Valencia that was conquered on the 9th of October, not the

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9 Marzipan

whole region. Morella was taken six years before and Alicante 10 years later. Since the late 1970s, however, the festival, much to the annoyance of some residents of Alicante and Castellón, is a holiday in the entire Valencia Region. As a result the whole thing is celebrated with little enthusiasm outside the city of Valencia. Although I suppose even bitter Hercules fans (Alicante’s leading football team) never say no to a day off work. In the city of Valencia, the 9th of October celebrations include the parading of the Valencia ‘Senyera’ flag, which has the four red stripes on a yellow background of Aragon with a blue band at the mast added by Pere IV (El Ceremoniós for you nickname lovers). The flag leaves the Ayuntamiento via the balcony as it may never bow down before anybody (well, not while the TV cameras are there, anyway). The ‘Senyera’, along with a procession of marching dignitaries, brass bands and groups in traditional dress and military uniforms, is then taken to the Cathedral, the Generalitat palace (home of the Valencia Regional government) and the statue of King Jaume in the parterre (designed garden). Councillors of different political parties take turns carrying the flag throughout the parade, which is much more about civic pride than politics. Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

There have been times in recent decades, however, when things have taken on a more political edge. During the transition period to democracy in the mid-to-late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the 9th of October celebrations were used to promote autonomy, human rights and as a vindication of Valencian identity. Demonstrations were held in the afternoon with calls for “Libertad, Amnistía y Estatuto de Autonomía!” (freedom, political amnesty and a statute of regional autonomy). These days the afternoon political demo has been replaced by a Moors and Christians musical parade. There are two groups, however, who, even now, still keep things a bit edgy. There is always a march by an alliance of right-wing groups carrying a mix of Valencia flags, Spanish national flags and usually a few other dodgier symbols. They strut around all muscles, tight black T-shirts and sunglasses shouting at the top of their voices “Valencia is not Catalonia!” which would beg the response “Er…nobody said it was” except for the fact that there is another group who claim just that. The ‘Maulets’, a group of weekend punks, Barça fans and ex-hippie university lecturers reliving their radical youth, carry their own versions of the Senyera; without the blue bar for the ‘Catalanistes’ (who believe Valencia is indeed part of Catalonia), or a Senyera with a blue triangle and star

for the ‘indepedentistes’, those who want independence for Valencia from Spain (usually associated with a wider pan-Catalan independence). There will probably be the odd Republican flag thrown in for good measure. So, you always get the “We are not Catalonia!/Oh, yes we are!” brigades. Much more popular, however, are the fireworks. There’s a castillo (fireworks display) competition in the river between Valencia and one Asian and one European country on the night of the 8th (for some reason Valencia always seems to win). There is also a ‘mascletà’ (fireworks display) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at 14.00h on the 9th which is as good as the ones in Fallas but with far less people and no human statues or tourists in straw Águila hats. The parades start from the Ayuntamiento at 12.00h and the huge Moors and Christians parade in the centre during the afternoon is good fun. So enjoy yourself and celebrate the city on the 9th of October and, whatever you believe, make sure you are carrying the right flag.

VALENCIA MUSIC

WITH LA PULQUERÍA

La Pulquería - Fast cuisine 24/ 7Valencia met with Pancho (guitar), Miguel Ángel (bass) and Jordi (guitar) of La Pulquería at Café Lisboa in the Ciutat Vella, Valencia. Thank you to Café Lisboa for the terraza and fine service.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH VALENCIA BAND LA PULQUERÍA Tell us about the band and how you got the name We’re a bunch of local lads from Valencia. We love punk and rock ’n’ roll and Mexican mariachi music and those are our main influences. We also dig ska, surf, boleros and Balkan music. Our sound is a mixture of singable and danceable melodies, three voices in harmony, rabid guitars, Mexican trumpet and trombone and a powerful rhythm section. It is a sound of light and shade, rocking, eclectic and fun. We sing of love and desamor and about life. You’ll love us live! We formed in the year 2000 and were on the major label Sony for many years, releasing three albums with them. The name La Pulquería comes from the Mexican term pulquería, which describes the type of taberna bars that are slowly dying out, frequented only by Mexican machos who drink pulque, a milkylooking alcoholic drink similar to cider. Your latest album is called ‘Fast Cuisine’? Yes, it is our first independently produced album, distributed on Maldito Records, as we decided to go our separate ways with Sony in 2009. We recorded ‘Fast Cuisine’ in Buenos Aires in Argentina,

to get away from all the distractions of recording in Valencia and also to get reenergised by a different environment. It was recorded with the expert production of famed producers Osqui and Pepe at the Estudio Del Cielito, which is pretty much where every mythical Argentinian rock band has ever recorded, including Los Piojos. Recording in Argentina gave our sound a freshness, using more analogue equipment helped, too. It was then mixed in Valencia by the expert Valencian producer Manuel Tomàs, who spent a decade recording in Los Angeles. You could say that the big Hollywood sound of the ‘Fast Cuisine’ is his influence! We’re planning to release a new video each month on YouTube for each song on the album. Keeping up with the changing times we’re releasing the album on digital formats like 7 digital, iTunes, Spotify as well as physical formats. We’re breaking the album into three EPs, making it very affordable at just 3€ each. Having recorded so many albums, have you played abroad much? We’ve been lucky enough to play all over the world in the last 10 years, including festivals in Berlin and some wild Mexican and American tours. We played in Brooklyn and in Manhattan at the legendary Bowery Ballroom (Neil Young, The Strokes) in New York and we headlined two festivals in Switzerland. At one of them, we hung out with fellow

headliner Pete Doherty backstage and he was a kind and polite bloke away from all the hype of his public image. We shared tattoo stories and he swapped his rum stash for our marijuana. We played the Vive Latino festival in front of 40,000 people, sharing the main stage with artists like Molotov and Andrés Calamaro. Touring Europe and America has been a hell of a ride and a lot of fun! Where can we see you play in Valencia? We’re currently doing a Spanish tour to promote the new album and we’ll be playing all over Spain, including concerts in Bilbao, Madrid and Barcelona. We’ll be playing LA3 in Valencia at the end of October. It’ll be a rocking good laugh for all. 24/7 Valencia have supported local bands for many years and it’ll be an honour to play at the 10th anniversary celebration of ‘24/7 Valencia’ on October 31 at LA3. There’ll be a lot of our fans and your readers, too, and we’re looking forward to it! La Pulqueríaʼs new album ‘Fast Cuisine’ is out now on Maldito Records. They play LA3 on C/ Padre Porta, 2 (just off Avenida del Puerto) on October 31st as part of the 24/7 Valencia 10th anniversary celebrations. See www.groovelives. com for more details. VALENCIA FILM

WITH FREDDY MAS FRANQUEZA

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH A VALENCIAN FILM DIRECTOR What is your background in film? I live in Valencia but I studied cinema at the Berlin Film School, taught by Wim Wenders, who was a great influence on me. I worked as a director’s assistant on various films in Germany, including ‘Goodbye Lenin’. What is the name of your new film (in English and in Spanish)? In Spanish it is ‘Amanecer de un Sueño’ and its English title is ‘Awaking from a Dream’. Your film has won 9 awards overseas. Could you tell our readers about your travels abroad? Which countries had the best response to your film and why? In the festivals I participated in, I had a lot of good experiences. The film has been shown in 12 countries, including Germany, U.S.A., Italy, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Egypt, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Bulgaria and Cuba. The public has always had the same reaction. People have been really moved by the film and have told me of their own experiences after the film was shown. It has made me think about the universality of art and that a local film about matters of the heart, if it is sincere, can become a universal film.

Is the film in any way autobiographical?

Where can we see the film in Valencia?

Yes. The film tells a story about my relationship with my grandfather, Pascual, from my childhood to late adolescence. It is a piece of my life that also reflects the life of people who have felt loved by their elders, whether they are grandparents or parents. It was filmed mostly in the Valencia Region and partly in Berlin.

At the Cines Lys, Paseo Ruzafa, 3 (just off Plaza del Ayuntamiento) in the month of October. What are your plans for the future? I am working on an American project called ‘Second Lives, Second Chances’ and planning to film it in Formentera. Interview by Owl

FOOD

Mejillones para mi! Mejillones, moules, mussels, call ‘em what you will, they are my absolute favourite seafood hands down. Surprised? Think prawns, crabs, oysters, lobster, or langoustines are better? Well, I might concede the langoustines, but I will take mussels over anything else any day! Get those soggy prawns and boring lobsters away! A big bowl of mussels gives one the ultimate seafood experience; delightful little parcels of juicy, salty goodness, tucked into nature’s own cutlery and (hopefully) swimming in a sublime sauce that complements their flavour but does not hinder it. Sided with another bowl of crisp, hot shoestring fries and a carafe of cool vino, one would be left wanting for little else – company, perhaps, but I could, and would, eat these on my own easily. I’ve just had a beautiful baby boy, and one of many things they warn you not to eat whilst pregnant is seafood. Generally I obeyed these rules of perceived risk, so, as you might imagine, it was really difficult for me to give up mussels but hell, it was only 9 months, I could do it. Last week, for a bit of a celebratory supper at home, mussels were most definitely on the menu. I love mussels with most any type of sauce, and I’ve written about a chili tomato sauce in this mag a few years ago – my favourite with beer – but this is my don’t-give-a-damn-about-yourfigure all-time fave. You can have it alone as a starter or stir it all through fettuccine or spaghetti as a main meal, add some crusty bread (or fries if you have your own deep fryer!) some chilled, crisp rosé or vino blanco and off you go. Clean and debeard the mussels, discarding any that are broken, and leave in the fridge till required. Peel the banana shallots and cut them in half lengthways, then slice them thinly.

Mussels in Cream with Coriander Serves 4 • 2 kg black lip mussels (allow 500 gm per person) • 6 large brown banana shallots • 4 cloves garlic • 600 mls pure cream • 1 bunch coriander • ±500 mls dry white wine • 50 gm butter • Sea salt and pepper to taste

Once all the mussels are added, stir well to combine. Now check for seasoning, the juice from the mussels will have added some of the necessary salt, so it’s important not to salt the cream sauce before adding the mussels, or it may be unbearably salty. Steaming the mussels separately in this manner allows for any dirt and grit from inside the shells to fall to the bottom of the pan and therefore not be incorporated into your meal - a far better result indeed. Serve immediately with fries, bread, pasta and plenty of wine. Use the mussel shells as a spoon and just get stuck straight in - you’ll love it! Have a lovely month and take care. Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

© 2010 24/7Valencia

Roughly chop the garlic and in a large pan over medium to low heat, sweat the shallots and garlic until soft and translucent. Once softened, pour in all the cream and bring to the boil, reduce the heat and allow to simmer gently whilst you prepare the rest of the dish. Finely chop the coriander and set aside. Get everything else for supper ready now, the mussels won’t take long and you want to serve them immediately, so now’s the time for organising pasta and bread, etc. Then, in another large saucepan that will hold all the mussels adequately, pour in the white wine and set over high heat and bring to the boil. Once boiling, add the mussels, cover with a tight fitting lid and shaking the pan occasionally, wait for all the mussels to open – you can give them a stir as well. They will take 4-6 minutes to open, more or less, and once opened, add the chopped coriander to the cream sauce, and then with a slotted spoon, lift the mussels into the cream sauce. You can allow some of the juice from the mussel saucepan to mix into the cream sauce – this adds a little of the wine, some of the salty flavour from the mussels and also allows the sauce to thin a little.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

THAI GARDENS My love affair with the Far East and its cuisine started more years ago than I want to admit to here. I was working in the airline industry (long before the advent of budget airlines) and had this crazy idea of a whistle-stop, round-the-world trip of a honeymoon. I applied to various airlines and hotels for flights and accommodation, expecting most of them to reject my requests. Not one rejected me – in fact all but one airline offered us free tickets with first-class upgrades (if available – we were on standby) and the international hotel chains offered either free or incredibly cheap rates for us honeymooners. As you can imagine, we had the time of our lives; we travelled from London to Madrid for our first night and then returned to London to begin our journey through the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Los Angeles and New York – and we were treated to luxury travel and special treatment in Hiltons and Sheratons all along the way. But it was the food that really stays in our memories, we dined like kings in the Far East. We ate in the Satay Club in Singapore, in beach bars and clubs in Penang, in street markets in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. We had the hottest curry of our lives, before or since, in the beach bar of the E&O Hotel in Penang, and the first taste of Thai food in the streets of Bangkok and it was love at first taste. In the years that followed whilst I was still working in the airline industry, we always tried to make at least one annual trip to these magical countries and though we have still managed to get away over the ensuing years, it was never in quite as much luxury as that honeymoon. In the years we have lived here in Valencia we have learned to always keep a stock of Indian, Thai and Chinese spices at home to make our own dishes. It was so hard to find anywhere serving these cuisines in or around the city.

Things have been changing and improving over the years, except, until very recently, for Thai food. We had to rely solely on our own or friends’ Thai food. Some of the Chinese restaurants in the city have offered Thai dishes but they have almost always been very disappointing. We used to treat ourselves to a visit to Thai Gardens on our all-too-infrequent trips to Madrid. But now, finally, they have opened a branch here in Valencia. We went on a Tuesday, (the night before the General Strike, actually) and when we walked through the unimposing front door we came face to face with a large Buddha garlanded with flowers and holding incense and walked through an attractive seating area with low sofas and tables into the lovely dining area, its high-raftered ceiling reminiscent of long houses in rural Thailand. There are exotic floral displays and a water feature on a rear wall. Everywhere is spotlessly clean and the general ambience is of calm. There were several tables of couples and families already eating around us as we sat down to read the menus and decide on what to eat and drink. We decided on a very good value Protos Ribera del Duero red wine. And so to the food. We started with a platter of Thai starters which included small spring rolls, battered Langoustine, chicken mince balls, steamed Won Tons, chicken Satay and a vermicelli noodle salad, all served with two dipping sauces, soy and sweet chilli. Alongside this was a Pad Thai of noodles, Khung (langoustines), vegetables and chilli. To follow this little feast we ordered two main dishes to share, steamed lubina (sea bass) in a red curry on a bed of pak choi (cabbage) and chilli served on a pretty fish-shaped burner, and delicious slices of tender duck cooked with mushrooms, pineapple and grapes, in a red curry, a surprisingly delicate dish served warmed on a burner. Each dish was decorated

with an orchid flower. We had a side order of aromatic Thai rice, sticky and delicious – so different to Basmati or Spanish rice, and essential to accompany Thai food. For dessert, D had (an absolutely perfect) mango and a sweet sticky rice, and I had the Thai Gardens fruit dessert, a selection of exotic fruits of the season. Mine included papaya, mango, grapefruit, pineapple and lychees served with a mousse de chocolate and coconut flan, and we shared the two desserts. The ingredients are flown fresh from Bangkok every week and you can really taste the difference, everything was fresh and perfectly prepared. The service is, as you would expect from this gentle race of people, friendly and discreet. It is a lovely place to indulge yourself and your friends and to spend an evening in lovely surroundings with great food. CHILL OUT

CAFÉ LISBOA “Nos vemos en el Lisboa!” is something you will hear very often in Valencia. Lisbon? you’ll ask yourself. No, silly, Café Lisboa!

baileys’ (with a touch of Bailey’s). The menu is also in English. You can order food from 09:00 h to 23:00 h.

Café Lisboa is probably one of the most well-known bars/terraces in the old centre. It’s been there for years and feels like it hasn’t been touched since day one. Situated right behind the central market and La Lonja, Café Lisboa’s terrace, under that big olive tree that is over 400 years old, and is never ever empty. They are open from early morning for yummy croissants and very Spanish coffee, for lunch when they offer filled sandwiches and baguettes, tapas and salads, and freshly squeezed orange juices, all through to late late at night when you can enjoy anything from a bottle of wine (as I’m sure anyone will agree, it’s never worth just ordering a glass), a cocktail or a coffee ‘tocado de

Café Lisboa is famous with the arty Valencians & bohemian students that use the terrace as their studios as they paint the Plaza Dr. Collado. It has its charm with the old buildings and little shops and bars, foreigners who need a cool beer after so much sightseeing, and it’s very, very popular with first dates! Why, you may ask? This plaza is probably the busiest in the old town after the Plaza de la Virgen. People hustle and bustle through here all day and all night long trying to get somewhere, the skaters whizzing through in a hurry, the fire eaters that entertain and slightly shock you with their madness or just the Valencia everyday lifestyle, there is always something to see and talk about.

Café Lisboa is a favourite of ours for a bottle of chilled white wine (around 12€ a pop) and some olives, and a gossip. They also serve the tasty Catalan beer Voll-Damm. Indeed, you can watch FC Barcelona soccer matches here every week. Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary

Ryanair Lands in Valencia (again) Yes, they’re back. The no-frills, nomeals, no-sleep airline. Those of you who have experienced Ryanair flights will be familiar with the hideous interior yellow advertising decor that penetrates your closed eyelids, not to mention the incessant in-flight loudspeaker reminders of instant-win scratch cards and cheap weekend getaways to Plovdiv. And don‘t think you can sneak off to the loo for forty links, either, for the airline’s colourful boss, Michael O’Leary, has said he’s thinking of charging for the privilege of visiting the only peaceful place on the plane besides the cockpit. Not to worry – the plan is doomed to failure anyway as you can never reach said haven since your path is barred by trolleys continuously rattling up and down the aisles, crammed with ciggies, the aforementioned scratch cards and ‘fun size’ booze for the hung-over Brits too fuddled to work out the exchange rate. “Excuse me, sir, could I interest you in a 3€ plastic cup of gravy with caffeine, I mean coffee? A Karaoke Love Songs CD? Or a nasal hair remover, perhaps?” “Oooh, yes, please, that’s just what

I wanted right now. And could you please wake me again in two minutes and ply me with perfume products, too? Why, oh why, doesn’t British Airways provide these essential, non-stop services! Actually, I’m being sarcastic – I’d rather you depressurised the cabin and trundled these inane wares out of the emergency door when we’re over the sea, please.” Ah well, the whole point of such airlines is their cost, of course. At least cheap airlines have provided the chance to travel for many who otherwise could never have done so, and given the fact that oil is running out, my advice is to make the most of it while we still can - I don’t see jumbo jets being powered by solar energy somehow. So if we have to put up with Ryanair’s wall-to-wall hard sell for two hours, then we just have to grin and bear it, or better still leer lewdly at the flight attendants with a sinister chuckle and chew garlic in the hope they’ll stop pestering us for a few minutes. But love ‘em or loathe ‘em, Ryanair are back in Valencia. In case you didn’t know, the cheapskate airline decided to pull out of Valencia for two years,

allegedly due to accusations of favouritism as regards subsidies from the regional Valencia government going only to a Spanish airline. Knowing the alleged nepotism and backhanders so rife in Valencia government and given the character of Ryanair’s main man, O’Leary, famous for his outbursts of swearing (“blow jobs for business class”) and ‘maverick’ methods (he once bought taxi plates for his car to use the bus lanes in Dublin), the explanation sounds perfectly plausible. The result may have cost Valencia’s tourist industry a fortune, so Mr. O’Leary has certainly made his point. The company now expects to pass one million tourists through Valencia a year. Valencia Club de Fútbol’s return to Champion’s League football may even have influenced the airline’s decision to come back to the Mediterranean city, as this has brought in not inconsiderable revenue to the airport at Manises in the past. A 1.6 million euro handshake with the Valencia tourist department may also have swayed the balance. Ryanair’s return means Valencia now has nearly 30 direct flights with them. Within Spain, they’ll be going direct to Fuerteventura, Mallorca, Article © 2010 24/7Valencia

Ibiza, Santiago de Compostela, Barcelona (!) and Seville, and abroad to various destinations in Morocco, Italy (seven cities), Germany, France, England (not Scotland), Dublin, Oporto and Oslo. But not Plovdiv. It is years now since Ryanair overtook the privatised Irish airline Aer Lingus (humorously known as ‘Air Fling-us’) as the country’s number one airline, and they have even attempted takeover bids of said airline. Just over three years since taking off at Alicante’s El Altet airport, they are now the top carrier there. Nevertheless, there are those who have their doubts as to the company’s low-budget methods. A few even voice concerns as to the amount of money spent on safety measures, imagining them to be as cost-conscious in this respect as in the rest of their services. As for charging for use of the loo, I suspect this is just another of O’Leary’s publicity ploys, straight out of the Benetton marketing textbook under the heading ‘All Publicity Is Good Publicity’ (including this article). The head honcho has also suggested non-seat flights as in an underground train to cram in more passengers. I’d like to see the trolleys bump their way through that. It’d mean a faster turnaround, though:

“All change at Heathrow. Please mind the 20-foot gap to the tarmac.” Incidentally, a new seat has been designed – the Skyrider ‘saddle seat’ – which may interest such airlines: it doesn’t actually let you park your butt as much as bend your knees slightly, and the only riding will be done by your underwear where the sun doesn’t shine. I hope they’re not reclining, too, or the guy in front of you will be snoring and drooling on your shoulder while your deep vein thrombosis sets in. Then again, we often find similar conditions on some road or underground journeys, yet no one complains. Nor do people seem too concerned about the far higher accident rates of other forms of transport, or the statistically shocking risks of smoking, for example. Of course, watching a plane plummet in a ball of flame on YouTube is far more eye-catching than watching someone cough up phlegm on a hospital bed. Then there is the publicity coup of the calendars with Ryanair hostesses posing as if the airline were also saving on air conditioning. The boss’s most recent wacky suggestion is that we passengers could save a fortune if they did away with the co-pilot. Again, he seems to be confusing his planes with trains, as Richard Branson did when he bought up some of the old British Rail thinking

it was British Airways. Let’s hope the number of near misses we see when trains pass each other on the rails are not repeated in the skies. In fact, a Ryanair pilot has already responded by suggesting that a co-pilot could take over O’Leary’s job and thus save the company millions of euros in salary. As for the vacant copilot’s seat, maybe they’ll sell it as a Premium Window Seat with great views. I’d be wary of chatting to the person seated next to you, though, in case you distract them. Or worse still, you may discover he/she also has a Premium Window Seat and asks you what all those buttons and switches do. I can see myself arriving late at the check-in desk: “Sorry, sir, this flight’s overbooked. The only seat free is next to the pilot. But only if you meet three conditions: 1. Hand luggage only. 2. No alcohol. 3. Can fly a plane.” “Ermmm, yesss, OK… I can fly a plane…”

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

THE K I N GS ARE D E AD, LO N G LIVE THE K I N GS If someone had told you in the summer that in the month of October Valencia would be top of the league and unbeaten, you would probably have thought that person was as mad as a brush. However, after a solid, workmanlike start to the season the Chés are sitting pretty. The sales of Villa and Silva led many to believe that the team would struggle to maintain its position in the division, let alone be up at the top. History does tend to repeat itself, as when Mendieta left the club, it seemed the end of an era; on the contrary, the next season the team won the league. Over the last few seasons Valencia have played more or less for Villa, nothing strange for a player of his class. The fact that he has gone now means that responsibilities are shared and the players seem to be more united as a team. Valencia probably won’t win the league but the season’s start has certainly

calmed fraught nerves. The Chés’ second game of the season was at home to Racing Santander and after a rare Hedwiges Maduro goal, Valencia held onto the three points. The football was not brilliant and in all honesty, the Cantabrians probably warranted something from this game, but two wins out of two meant that the blanc i negres led the league table as they travelled to the Turkish inferno to face Bursaspor in the first match of the Champions League. Valencia surprised everyone with what has been their best performance of the season so far. They were fluid and positive, Joaquín and Pablo were brilliant down the wings. Tino Costa scored one of the goals of the season with a thumping 25yard drive that had the Valencia faithful jumping from their seats, and further goals from Aduriz, Pablo and Soldado meant the team’s 4-0 victory also put them top of their Champions League group. Back in the league, the team travelled to Alicante to face Hercules, who had just come off the back of beating Barcelona. Two early goals for Valencia seemed to spell a trouble-free game for the visitors, until David Navarro was sent off for getting

fouled (yes, it’s true) so he was shown the red card whilst being stretchered off. French veteran David Trezeguet scored a penalty just before half-time and Valencia had veteran keeper César to thank as the old-timer produced some stunning saves to ensure that the Chés went home with all three points. So three from three, and Atlético Madrid came to Mestalla to present the Chés’ most difficult test to date. The Colchoneros took the lead through Simão and Valencia threw everything at the ‘Atleti’ keeper, David De Gea, who was sensational. Spain have a worthy replacement for Iker Casillas when the Real Madrid keeper should decide to stand down. With seven minutes to go, Aduriz headed Valencia’s equaliser and De Gea was finally beaten and the shares were spoiled. On the road, Valencia travelled to Gijón to take on Sporting. The Chés shot out of the blocks and scored two early goals, which all but secured the game after an impressive first half performance. In the second half the team took their foot off the pedal, no doubt with the upcoming fixture against Man Utd in mind. Ferguson’s United team came to Valencia missing Rooney, Scholes and Giggs. © 24/7 Valencia 2010

Fernandes is back!

Valencia CF vs Manchester Utd

Levante UD vs Real Madrid

Valencia were far superior to the English team yet failed to convert their chances. Soldado missed a sitter and failed to connect with several superb crosses. Manchester had probably settled for a point after being outplayed for most of the match until with five minuets to go, the ‘Little Pea’ Javier Hernández buried a shot into the bottom corner and left Valencia looking like some right Carloses. The result now means that Valencia need to travel to the British Isles and get a good result, be it against United or more probably against Rangers. If the team’s confidence was damaged, it didn’t show against next league opponents, Athletic Bilbao. Yet again Valencia were outstanding in the first forty-five minutes and a single goal advantage, thanks to Aduriz, was little recompense for numerous chances that the home team created. The Chés’ manager Unai Emery said after the game that he was concerned about the team’s lack of clinical finishing in front of goal, no doubt reflecting the team’s performances against United and Bilbao.

We had to wait until the 91st minute for the second goal from Vicente to assure the three points, even though the Basques sneaked a very late consolation goal from a free kick. Valencia have sixteen points from a possible eighteen and are top of the league before they visit the Camp Nou and take on title favourites Barcelona. If the Chés could get a result against the Catalans, then maybe Valencia’s impressive season’s start will make the national press take notice that, after this summer’s fire sale, Valencia are still open for business. Across the city, Levante have bounced back from a poor start to the season. After losing the opening three games, it seemed that they were favourites to be relegated. However, they hit back against Almería, securing a 1-0 away victory followed by an even more impressive home draw against the galácticos of Real Madrid, a team that seem more interested in what their manager says

than what they do on the field. Levante’s next games are against teams who are involved in a similar situation to themselves, clubs whose first goal is to assure their Primera status, such as Real Sociedad, Osasuna and Deportivo. The ‘granotas’ need to keep their good run of form going and get some points on the board before Christmas, which is easier said than done, but if they show the same sort of fighting spirit they produced against the ‘merengues’, then they have every chance. CLUBLAND Well the summer is now officially over, and what a summer it has been! Valencia is showing more and more why it is becoming a city with a wide array of events and nightlife options attracting an ever-increasing international attention. From the impressive Formula 1 parties, festivals such as FIB and Arenal Sound to the numerous new and luxury terraces opening up this year, it will only add to an even better summer in 2011! I have had the opportunity to host some great events, bringing over 100 people over the summer from London to party at my ‘Secret Terrace’ as well as our unique F1 three-day party and the odd stag do along the way! Now as we say goodbye to the terraces and summer clubs for another season, it gives the opportunity to say hello to new and interesting places back in the city centre with re-opening of established venues, new venues and also some interesting and special events for October. The Groovelives Team have re-opened LA3 (La Tres on C/ Padre Porta, 2) just off Av. del Puerto after their August break. This theatre-styled club offers live bands in the main room and then DJs late into the night playing a mix of mainstream, indietronica, electroclash, and new rave music from resident DJs Fono & Obtuso. In their second room upstairs, you will find an energy-fuelled room with deep & tech house hosted by resident DJ Pablo Cebrián. Check out the 8th for the Mira Una Moderna Festival with a large line-up of artists as well as live performances and visual shows. On the 29th, we welcome back to Valencia Wagon Cookin’ sponsored by Jagermeister. Don’t forget to come down on the 31st for the 24/7 Valencia 10th anniversary party with the wildly popular Valencia band La Pulquería playing a rocking set of infectious punk-mariachi and of course Halloween is on, so expect some interesting people dancing the night away in fancy dress! It starts at midnight and finishes at 7.00h! Other Groovelives venues to check out are Piccadilly (electro, indie, pop, rock ‘n’ roll and more) right in the heart of the city, open every night until well past dawn. So, it’s good as a late night drinking and dancing venue and 47 Social Club is cool for pre-club parties in the Carmen. Be sure to find discounts to LA3 and all other Groovelives venues at these places. (www. groovelives.com) There are a few other pre-club venues I recommend to visit. The luxury Estrella Damm Club (Edficio Veles y Vents) in the port will continue to keep its doors open until the end of the year. It will be open Wednesdays to Saturdays playing a mix of house, hip-hop and R&B, with special events throughout October. The other venue is Laydown (Mercado Campanar) which offers great nights and ‘Supper Club’-style dining. Watch out for the ‘Sasoul’ parties being hosted there with the best mix of

upfront house music. (www.estrelladammclub. com, www.laydown.com) Ruzafa and the surrounding areas are now getting busy with the opening of a new club nights as well as current clubs still going strong. Link Club (C/ Cuba, 8 at La Belle Époque) opened its doors in September hosting top DJs and a more underground music policy with deep, tech and minimal house music. Open from Thursday to Sunday this club offers underground dance music nights of all varieties on certain nights so look out for fliers and information. If you are a fan of Barraca, then this club offers an inner city alternative with monthly resident and good friend Andrew Grant from Circo Loco and Barraca fame on the 29th. Another interesting night will be the 15th for the Circo Loco release party with Maetrik. (www.facebook.com/Electronicsummermeeting) Just off Mercado de Ruzafa you will find Excuse Me! (C/ dels Tomasos, 14) Having just celebrated their third year anniversary in September with an amazing party with international guest producer Prins Thomas, they carry on their nights into October with their unique style of space, nu and Italo disco downstairs and indie pop, rock ‘n’ roll and soul upstairs. Watch out for the 8th with monthly resident and international producer Nacho Marco (Loudeast, Pacha). Also check out their bar Flow (Plaza Honduras, 37) for a mix of music Thursday to Saturday. (www.facebook.com/ excusemeclub) We’re not forgetting the more mainstream clubs in the city that have reopened their doors in September. The highly popular and elegant Indiana Club (C/ San Vicente, 95 ) offers three rooms with a mix of R&B and hip-hop in one room, an impressive main room featuring funky and commercial house with a light show and dancers, and the upstairs room offering a more Spanish-orientated music. Visit Gran Vía 73 (Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 73) from Thursdays to Saturdays to get hold of discount entrances to Indiana. Also come see me DJ at Gran Via 73 with Simon Jukes every second Thursday of the month at our party URBANista for a mix of upfront disco, deep and funky house with a London vibe! The internationally famous Pacha resides in Valencia (C/ San Vicente Mártir, 305), open Thursdays to Saturdays offering that Pacha vibe known the world round. The final mainstream club to consider is Las Ánimas with two venues, their bar located in C/ Pizarro 31 just off the Gran Vía in Zona Cánovas and their impressive club by the port, too. Again, visit their bar prior to going to the club to find discount entrances to their other venues. Whilst we are talking about the centre of town I have to mention Barrio del Carmen, which sees the influx of winter party-goers with the large

variety of bars to kick start your night. This is also a great place to go and find fliers and discount entries to all the bars and clubs from all the public relations people walking around the streets. If you are in the Blasco Ibáñez area then I have some interesting options for you. Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) offer a great venue for underground house music now running well into its second year. They kicked off their opening party with international DJ Kiko Navarro in September to a sold-out club! This month sees another international DJ & producer and a favourite of mine, Chymera, gracing the deck on the 8th so you are bound to see me there dancing the night away on that night. The other night I recommend is the 29th with London-based DJ Rick Maia (www. syncinternational.net). This club is a must go to for the amazing sound system to keep you dancing all night! (www.myspace.com/miniclubvlc) Drum & Bass and dubstep are still alive and kicking in Valencia. For you lovers of deep bass lines, you can find two options for October. Street Plan have an event at Radio City on October 6th and Bassline Abuse will be at Double Gota on the 15th. Check out their websites for more information on any other events they are holding. (www.streetplan.es, www.myspace.com/ basslineabuse). Every Wednesday night, Radio City has drum & bass... For you live band lovers, one special event to mention comes on October 8th at Mirror (C/ San Vicente, 200). Peter Hook, famous as the bass guitarist for Joy Division which later became New Order, will be presenting ‘Unknown Pleasures’ by Joy Division. Tickets are €25 in advance (€28 at the door) and available from www.valenciaticket. com. Mirror is also a night club so look to carry on partying until the early hours. Just to finish off, this time of year we welcome new people to the city and if you are here to live or are just visiting and want to meet more like-minded people, I recommend a visit to the Portland Ale House (C/ Salamanca, 10). Open all week, they offer a variety of events for people to come and interact, making it a friendly and open bar until 1.30h. A great venue to find out where to go party afterwards! So I hope this gives you some insight into what is going on around the city, and most that you don’t hear about with other magazines. If I have missed any good nights you have been to and feel they should get a mention in other editions, please contact the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team and let us know. See you on the dance floor!

singer Sargento Garcia, who is based in Valencia. How do you try and help people with your music?

KUAMI MENSAH What brought to you Valencia and what do you think of it? My first thought to that question is to remember that I chose to study physics and chemistry instead of Spanish at school in Africa! So, with that in mind, I can say that life naturally brought me to Spain and especially Valencia. Tell us about your music. My music is an authentic mix of influences. I was born in Benin, Africa, and my father Gnonnas Pedro was a Latin salsa musician (ex-leader and singer of the pan-African band called Africando). I sing in a number of African languages, Spanish, French and English. Reggae music gives me hope. Therefore what I do is ‘AfroLatinReggae’ music...

What is your message? Generally, I never choose what I want to sing about, but quite often my inspirations come naturally from fighting the system. I sing for justice, to fight against injustice in this world and I sing for the respect of Africa. After slavery, colonization and independence, I cannot understand why Africa is living in shame. I sing for humanity not to be corrupted. I know it is difficult but I will still try to give my best through my music. Could you explain what your latest album is about?

Have you played many concerts in Valencia, Europe and Africa?

My last album is a little different from the previous two. I have added more AfroLatin influences to emphasize the origin of American and Cuban music today. We all know that Africa is the beginning of it all and this album is my way to make the world remember the slaves. I say, “May we start a day to pay homage to the memory of the slaves every year.”

I have played many concerts in Valencia, around Spain and some in Europe, including festivals in France and Italy. Like I’ve said before, “Every concert I do is a lesson and I am an eternal student. I always think I’m just beginning my professional life and I still have much to do.”

I pay a tribute to my musician father Gnonnas Pedro from Benin, Lluis Llach from Spain and Abdel Halim Hafez from Egypt with songs by both of them. The arranger of the album is Cuban trombonist Julio Montalvo and there is also a track featuring the legendary French/Spanish

Life for me doesn’t make sense if I can’t find a moment for the rest of the people, whether they are black, brown, white or yellow. I don’t care about the President of the USA, it’s more important for me what man does for humanity. I just try to do my best with my music and I hope I’ll be able to always do my best. I think it is the same for all of us, in whatever we do... Where and when can 24/7 Valencia readers see you in concert in Valencia? Very soon. In the month of October, I’ll be giving a big concert with my Kuami Mensah & AfroLatinReggae band to present my latest CD ‘AfroLatinReggae Hwendo’ at Mirror (C/ San Vicente, 200) on 22 October at 22.00h. If you buy the CD for 10€ before that day in Discos Amsterdam (Nuevo Centro), La Pulga (C/ San Fernando, 22) or Arte & Facto (C/ Pie de la Cruz, 8, near Radio City) you also get a ticket to the concert. If you buy a ticket on the day of the concert, it is 13€ with my CD included in the price of entry. The concert will have a number of guest musicians. It is also a concert to celebrate our good friends at 24/7 Valencia for their 10th anniversary year. 24/7 Valencia is a magazine that has always fought for Valencia and we appreciate their help over the years. Good health to you and your loved ones!

WOMAN

for being involved in such illegal activity. Which is unlikely, but would be super entertaining. I may start a blog, by popular demand (of Miss R., mainly) but its highly likely that blogging in the workplace is a security violation also, so either things pick up or I look for something new, as I don’t think I can stand to see my poor neurons dying off from lack of use.

I thought September would bring a wash of calm over my household, everyone settling in, getting back into a routine, going to bed early, rising even earlier, but instead it’s been like a tornado has been whipping my life into a frenzy. I’ve had friends sleeping on camp beds, family members in the spare room, their friends on my sofa, and a constant revolving door of guests and activity happening all day and all night. I’ve been up to Castellón to look at the port, ice skating in Bonaire, to the beach, up into the hills, back and forth from the airport, bus and train stations at least once every three days, had so many tapas I never want to see another patata brava in my life, and drunk more beer than two weeks at Oktoberfest. Every afternoon. There have been times over the last few weeks when I’ve thought, “Oh, My God, will they ever leave?” But now I’ve finally got a bit of peace and quiet I think I quite miss all the fun and games! And it’s not often people come to visit so I can definitely say I made the most out of them coming to stay. The most entertaining visitor was perhaps my cousin from the UK who is drop dead gorgeous and had all my friends – guys and gals – swooning at the very sight of him. I took him along to my dear Lolita Devine’s birthday (21 again!) and he was hot topic of conversation all night. Especially as the poor thing doesn’t speak a word of Spanish - everyone else could talk about his abs and guns to their hearts’ content. He is charming though, as well Photo Mateo Sanchis. as a looker, and those that do speak English were practically queuing up to speak to him. For the Little Miss Devine’s birthday we took over our local naff typical ‘bar español’ where we go all the time for the excellent food and endless jugs of beer, but not for the decor nor the unfriendly waiters nor the ‘ambient’ (read: flourescent) lighting, and we sat on the terrace outside in late September, with our own decorations strewn over the trees and down the table, convinced the usual drunks that sit on the bench next door must have been paid off so not to spoil the celebrations with their rowdiness and general banter. Talking of General Banter, the massive workload at the New Bank Job I predicted would come around this month has not appeared and I am pulling my hair out in despair at my desk, every single day. It’s not as if anyone even seems to care, either, what with 90% of the department in Barcelona, it’s like the few of us that are here don’t even exist. I am desperate for something to do, the hours go by at a snail’s pace, and it’s like watching a pot boil, all day. We can’t even do Facebook stalking, or look at anything interesting on the worldwide web as most sites bring up an interesting “Security Violation: Level 4” error which does make us feel like we’re trying to hack into the CIA or something but also slightly worried that a big man in a black suit with an earpiece may come in and drag me out by the hair

Warning: Major Product Plug coming up – thank goodness I have my new Blackberry (never go back-berry?! Terrible pun, sorry), so I am not completely at a loss. I don’t know how I ever lived without it, especially with the last month’s constant comings and goings we would never have all kept up with each other. I adore it and hate it at the same time. I love that I can keep up with people constantly, everyone in the City seems to have one and their little messenger/chat thing is wicked. I have convinced myself I am saving massive amounts in phone calls as I don’t actually need to talk to anyone any more (but am always on the phone anyway) and I can update Twitter/text my gran/ chat to my crush all at the same time! Hate it though, because everyone can get in touch with you all the time. Any time. And I feel a little stalked. I have resorted to leaving it at home from time to time as it bleeps and vibrates any time I get an e-mail, text, Facebook notification, Twitter mention, etc.! It’s enough to drive a girl crazy. In fact, I did have a crazy moment about a week after I got it. I went to the beach with some girlfriends, and stayed down there, as we do, til sundown, chatting away, packed up and halfway back to Valencia I realise in the car that - Shock Horror! I do not have my phone. Cue major panic, drive back to the beach, and me on hands and knees in sand, digging up the Patacona, convinced that I’d dropped it as we got up to leave, as the others retraced our steps back to the car. Of course, it was all for nothing, because being as slim and sleek as it is, I had slipped it inside my purse. Idiot.
