LAS LUNAS It was very nice to have a good meal to look forward to at this quality and welcoming restaurant in the Canovas area of the city, a barrio very much alive with international restaurants. Las Lunas is run by husband and wife team Eric and Bianca, who worked for the Valencia Hilton before setting up this venture with Chef, Gustavo Casello, a Uruguayan of Italian parentage who has cooked all over Europe prior to the Hilton and now here. It is a largish (and very attractive) room and we had Eric’s almost undivided attention. He started by suggesting a red wine from Cuenca, Finca La Estacada, a meaty wine with a fairly unique taste that both D and I really enjoyed, and good value at 12.50€ a bottle. Then Eric started to bring the food, we let him and Gustavo decide what we should eat. A basket of Pan Catalan of hot doughy bread arrived and first on was an ‘amuse bouche’ of a filo-wrapped prawn dunked in a chupito glass of a spicy tomato sauce. Our starter was a beautifully presented platter at the centre of which was a mountain of mozzarella wrapped in a (very) green tortilla and topped with a rocket salad and surrounded by a moat of green and red (tomato) pesto and succulent dried tomatoes. We loved this dish.

It is only in the past couple of years that I have really come to love Risotto, there is nothing quite like a really well-made one and our next course was a great one. A parmesan risotto topped with goat’s cheese and served with a red wine and wild mushroom sauce. Adorned, like a Mohican style comb, with a ‘Crujiente de Parmesan’ (A crunchy parmesan wafer). Absolutely delicious, the flavours complimenting each other beautifully. There was still more to come, our main course. When we said we were not sure we could do justice to another course, Eric suggested that we stick to salad the next day! Argentinean Steak on a pillow of pureed potatoes with dried tomatoes and a chimichurri salsa (a typical Argentinean sour sauce made from Jalapeño Peppers, garlic, fresh coriander, parsley and oregano in vinegar and olive oil). If that weren’t enough a martini glass filled with truffle oil drizzled ravioli! Wonderful. The steak was perfectly cooked and the ravioli made a great pairing. We sat and chatted to Eric about the restaurant for a while unaware that Gustavo was about to sidle up to the table with a stunning ‘postre’. It was a work of art and another little meal in itself! A biscuit basket of fresh bite-sized fruits topped with golden spun sugar and sitting in a red fruit coulee and vanilla ice cream. A wafer-thin white

chocolate and orange ‘fan’ and a chocolate sponge shared the plate and the whole thing was a delightful end to an excellent meal. This beautifully presented food is very good value, with the starters from 7-10€, rice dishes priced between 10-12€, the main meat courses between 15-18€ and the desserts between 5-7€. There is a menú on offer each night at 20.90€ and the delicious weekday lunchtime menú del día is 9.90€ rising to 14.90€ at weekends. Las Lunas opens each day at 09:30am and serves really interesting sounding bocadillos and tapas through the day, so pop in for a drink and a snack to try it out! The soundtrack is often jazzy and it is an upmarket, welcoming and relaxing place to dine. ISSUE 123 APRIL 11

The Times is the world’s most famous newspaper. Founded in 1785, it has been the United Kingdom’s ‘newspaper of record’ for many years. That ‘The Times’ has chosen to highly recommend ‘24/7 Valencia’ is indeed an honour. We thank the newspaper and also the many locals, expats and visitors who have supported us over the years.

There is an insightful article on ‘Valencia at Easter and the story of San Vicente Ferrer’ just for our readers. El Gazza explores ‘Life in the slow lane’ in Valencia and the effect on the environment too. Anita Darling checks out the wine fair and learns about karma and Dara Parker tries to adapt to the customs of a Spanish Fiesta!

‘24/7 Valencia’ is the only guide to Valencia, in any language, that is recommended by the local, national and international media. This includes El País, Lonely Planet, Time Out, The Guardian, The Times, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Business Traveller magazine, Super Deporte, Levante-EMV, ADN.es, Business Traveller Magazine, CNN.com and many more…

We wish all of our readers a very happy Easter and we know you’ll make the most of all Valencia has to offer in spring. Brilliant mornings with blue skies, lazy afternoons on the terraza with a cold drink, walks in the Río Turia, velvet dusks and balmy evenings, hidden promises, happy coincidences and late, late nights. No wonder the ruling Moors called Valencia a little piece of paradise fallen to earth.

In this colourful April edition we enjoy some lovingly prepared Asturian cuisine at ‘La Taska Sidreria’ in restaurant of the month. In Valencia music we interview the band ‘Fado Blues’ about their new album and we have some colourful shots of ‘Vidas de Valencia’ and clubbing nights with ‘24 hour party people’ too.

SAN VICENTE FERRER & EASTER IN VALENCIA Togas, Hankies and Espadrilles With the city all partied out and out of puff after Fallas, Valencia has never been big on Holy Week. Easter is a quiet affair around these parts. Some opt for a tentative pre-summer trip to the beach in the patchy April weather. Others decide to get away to the mountains for fresh air and herbal teas (or perhaps more likely, lamb chops and jugs of beer). If you do stick around, however, you’ll find there’s still plenty going on even if the pace slows a little and, best of all, you’ll easily get a table in that restaurant you had to queue outside the door for during Fallas. The only place in the city where you’ll find any full-on Holy Week celebrations is in the Poblados Marítimos down by the beach and the port. Far from the solemn, dignified processions you tend to find in Castile and Andalusia, the Valencian take

on it all is a bit more relaxed. Here it’s just another excuse for Valencians to show off and dress up as if they were taking part in one of those 1950s ‘sword and sandals’ epics starring some be-quiffed Hollywood muscle man. So you get local people interpreting all manner of biblical characters, Roman soldiers, emperors, slaves, courtesans, virgins and saints, all dressed to the nines in their Quo Vadis chic. Pop into a Cabanyal bar during Holy Weekend and you might encounter Jesus Christ sharing a quick caña and some olives with Herod, Delilah and Victor Mature. At this time of year all over the city the bakeries fill up with the traditional monas de Pascua, a sweet cake also typical in Aragon and Catalonia, which is made in the shape of an animal and decorated with coloured hard-boiled eggs. Up until the ‘60s and ‘70s, before everyone

had a flat at the beach or could rent a casa rural, the whole of Valencia would flock down to the river or to Malvarrosa to eat the mona along with longaniza de Pascua (a sort of less spicy Peperami forerunner), eggs and chocolate. A la vora del riu (down by the river) games would be played, ropes would be skipped, kites would be flown and girls would be kissed. The girl in the old Valencian Easter joke says to her mother, “I lost my espadrilles down by the river”, with her mother replying “As long as it was only your espadrilles!” These days the boiled eggs are often replaced by chocolate Kinder eggs and the mona is usually taken off to the villa or apartment to be eaten but the tradition lives on. It’s still a time for kite flying and the odd girl still gets kissed, although most of them lost their espadrilles a long time ago. The weekend following Easter is known as the Pascua de San Vicente. The first Monday after Easter Monday is San

Vicente Ferrer day, which means we all get a second consecutive long weekend. San Vicente Ferrer, along with his luckless namesake San Vicente the martyr (who was tortured and executed by the Romans and thrown on a rubbish dump), are the most iconic Valencian saints. San Vicente Ferrer is the patron saint of the region and San Vicente Mártir is the patron saint of the city. Born in C/ del Mar in Valencia in 1350, Vicente Ferrer was never martyred, tortured or even called nasty names and he probably never even went near a rubbish dump. Vicente was the son of a rich lawyer, the godson of a royal prince and a prize networker who was close friends with the Borgia family and intellectuals like Erasmus and Machiavelli. He was an extremely able politician, a dealer in influence and a proclaimer of Popes who had a great knack for always supporting the winning side, jumping ship whenever it suited him. With incredible foresight he baptised Rodrigo de Borgia, who was to become the first Borgia Pope, dropping one of the heaviest hints in history by declaring, “This boy will one day be Pope and he will make me a saint”. Vicente was indeed fast-tracked to sainthood, just thirty years after his death, when Rodrigo ascended to the Papacy. Article © 2011 24/7Valencia

Throughout the week you’ll start to see what look like ornate Punch and Judy puppet theatres popping up on corners all over the city centre. These are San Vicente’s altars, which provide the scenery for short plays acted out in Valenciano by local children. The plays depict the many miracles performed by the saint, because by far the coolest thing about San Vicente Ferrer is that he was the most prolific miracle worker of all time. Vicente is credited with 873 miracles, more than any other saint. He is usually depicted with his index finger aloft because, in the same way that Samantha from Bewitched could do magic by wriggling her nose, Vicente could zap miracles out just by lifting his finger like some sort of ecclesiastical superhero. There are 18 altars in total around the city, the oldest is in C/ del Mar where they have been putting on the plays since 1561. Other altars can be found in Bolsería, the Central Market, Plaza del Carmen, El Pilar and Ruzafa. One of the miracles you may see dramatised is El Salser, or ‘the cruet set miracle’, where San Vicente cured a neighbour’s fever with just oil and vinegar (there is a commemorative plaque on the door of the house where this is purported to have happened at C/

del Mar, 37). Another famous miracle was the Mocadoret, ‘the little handkerchief miracle’, where San Vicente proclaimed to his followers that there were people nearby who needed their help. “Where are these people?” his followers asked. The saint told them to follow his hanky and he threw it up in the air and into an attic window where, sure enough, they found a poor and needy family (not all that unusual in medieval Europe, to be fair). The square where this is said to have taken place is just off the Plaza de la Reina and is named after the miracle (Plaza Miracle del Mocadoret). Seats are put out around the altars which are usually filled by the parents of the kids taking part. In the old days, money was thrown for the children by the appreciative crowd. The kids had to hand over the cash to the local priest, although there’s more than one story of junior San Vicentes performing a little miracle of their own by stuffing the coins into their shoes and hoping nobody had seen them.

VALENCIA MUSIC

FADO BLUES

How did Fado Blues start, where are you from and what are your influences?

How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work for musicians?

My name is Mario Ferreira, I’m from Lisbon but I have lived in Valencia for 15 years. One night I played in a jam session with Vicente ‘El Mono’, an interesting guitar player from this very city. The special feel of the jam was more than just a coincidence and it was experimental, too. After recording our first demo, we started working with the Dwomo boys, Antonio Iglesias (drummer) and Jorge Lorán (bass), just over a year ago.

Not bad. Things are not good anywhere. We just came back from a tour in Portugal and it is worse there than here in Spain. Valencia is a cool place to live with nice weather and good musicians. We could live here or on Mars...going to be the same, it’s all about the chemistry.

Influences??? From fado to the blues, folk and traditional music, swing and rock ‘n’ roll, dockers and sailors, bitches and Kafka. Like an imagined and sweet surrealism.

What are your aims for the future with Fado Blues? Nothing special. Just keep playing together, doin’ gigs and tours. Just having fun...and if this thing helps us payin’ the bills at the end of the month, better.

Describe the new album.

Are you playing live in Valencia in the coming months?

Bohemian and romantic. Music for a drink with your buddies or your wild family at the local tavern. 13 songs which tell you some beautiful tales about fantasies and hopes. It’s a real proof of our chemistry because what you’re listening to on the CD is the same as what we do onstage. We recorded it live. No overdubs.

Yes. Now we’re having some rest from the Portuguese tour and we will play live in Valencia next Saturday 9 April at 23.00h in La Caverna, C/ Cuenca, 70. And we will do a live presentation of the new Fado Blues CD Taberna Flotante in Valencia on 21 May

in Dub Club. We will play the showcase in FNAC on C/ Guillem de Castro, 9-11, the day before, in the afternoon. Then we will prepare a small tour for Paris in June and will be going back for another, bigger tour of Portugal in the summer.

FIESTA

*

Tienes una Fiesta en tus Pantalones? My Colombian friends in Bogotá believe that “Tienes una fiesta en tus pantalones” is the token Spanish phrase in American movies, and hence they would repeat it incessantly. Which was a little bit annoying, but mostly hilarious. However, if you want to know about a real fiesta, forget Colombia, or the U.S… Spain is your country. ‘Fiesta’ is the Spanish word for party or holiday, events I believe the Spaniards may have invented. Despite the fact that Spain is known for partying (see: drunk northern Europeans), I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I moved here. Sure Spaniards go out late… but heck! I can stay up late, once in a while… ha. Say you innocently want to go out for a spot of dancing – sounds lovely, no? How do you feel about waiting until FOUR O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING? Seriously.

Spain is a little bit ridiculous. On average, clubs open at midnight, which by no means is an indication that people might show up at midnight, far from it. Rather, folks may start to show up around 3.00h… and the DJ may start spinning live at 4.00h I don’t know anywhere else in the world where this is the starting hour.

to sleep? I for one have solidified my ‘abuela’ status by refusing to participate in their shenanigans (this girl certainly needs to sleep!).

And we’re not just talking about clubs.

Dara Parker is an urban planner who writes regularly about planning and sustainability issues at: www.daraparker.com

Last Friday we went out with some friends for dinner and a casual drink. Of course having an early dinner meant we ate at 21.00h (the meal times are also silly), and subsequently ended up at the bar around 23.00 p.m.… and it was, empty. Literally. One of the ‘hot spots’ of Valencia, and all you could hear was the scraping of tables as the promotional drink folks set up their booth, all the while shooting us confused looks. I honestly don’t understand how this society functions. Period. I mean don’t people have to sleep? Don’t they want

And, I don’t even have a job. “Qué pena!” Dara Parker

FOOD

Sticky Thrifty Nigel Slater once said, “There is too much talk of cooking being an art or a science – we are only making ourselves something to eat.” Never a truer word has been spoken. There is so much fufu con-fusion food out there these days it’s hard to see the meal for the plate. I enjoy Nigel’s approach to food very much, and if you’ve read this column before you’ll know what a fan I am. Sometimes it is lovely to go to a beautiful restaurant, have some nice wine and admire their flatware, but more often than not, we’re hungry, man! I want to eat. Cooking is enjoying an explosion of interest worldwide of late and I think this is wonderful, but the celebrity chef rock star baloney is wearing me out. Back home recently dining out in one of my city’s ‘go to’ restaurants I was gobsmacked, a Wagyu steak NOT cooked by the celebrity himself and (apparently) they thought it was worth $135! Are you kidding me? Anyway, I won’t get onto that soap box, much as I would like too, I’ve decided I need to spend more time in my life on positive notes than bitching about the negatives. And I guess all this is leading up to my dish for this month. Perhaps I’m offering an excuse for something so simple and off-the-cuff, trying to justify my own eating habits. But, I think, sometimes we are just doing exactly as Nigel says; making ourselves something to eat, and so what if it’s not technically correct, so what if you’ve taken a short cut, used flat champagne instead of white wine because that’s all you had in the fridge (can’t imagine why you would have leftover champagne, but you take my point). Life is meant to be lived and there’s far too much time lost poring over the details. Of course, you can take the time to make something properly and wonderful whenever you feel so inclined, I completely encourage you, I’m just making a point that sometimes you can throw caution to the wind and it will actually turn out OK. When you have a crying baby at your feet, washing piling

Sticky Pork • 1 kg pork off-cuts • 1 large brown onion • 5 cloves garlic • 1 large knob of ginger • 2 dried chillies • 1 cup Marsala • 3-4 tbsp oyster sauce • Sea salt and white pepper

it through for a couple of minutes. Now add the fortified wine and turn down the heat. The wine should bubble and fizz, but you don’t want it all to evaporate, so turn it down quickly. Now add the oyster sauce and stir well to combine. Put a lid over the fry pan and put it in the oven for at least 3 hours. After a couple of hours you can take the lid off for a while if you think it’s too watery. This will allow the sauce to reduce a little and it will be a nice gooey mess when it’s done. It’s ready when you can shred it with a fork. You could serve this any manner of ways, it would be supersonic in rice wraps, with cabbage and coriander, etc., or stirred through a wide-flat rice noodle dish with pak choy, Thai basil and baby corn. Mine was quite simply served with jasmine rice and steamed Chinese cabbage, and the sweet, salty, chilli pork melted in my mouth!

up around you, a dog that needs walking and feeding, a bathroom that needs cleaning, a husband who’s hungry, an article that needs writing, and you can only manage to throw some things at a pan and hope for the best... it’s alright, and more than likely it’ll be delicious, so who cares if you’re not playing by the rules? Take the pork cuts out of the fridge and make sure they are close to room temperature before you start cooking. The off-cuts can be off any part, belly, loin, whatever. Just get some leftover bits with lots (sort of) of fat on the edge. Take a large cast iron fry pan, or any fry pan that you will be able to transfer to the oven, and preheat the oven to 140ºC. Set the pan over a medium-hot heat. Once it’s quite hot, add a little oil and the pork. Don’t stir the pork, allow each side to sear and become golden brown before turning. Sprinkle over a little sea salt and grind in some white pepper. (Naturally, in the spirit of this article, black pepper will suffice if that’s what you’ve got). In a food processor put the onion, garlic and ginger and whiz to almost a paste. Roughly chop the dried chillies. Once the pork is nicely browned on all sides add the onion mix and the chilli and stir

There you go, I know this recipe is kind of slapdash, but it’s what I could make with what I had on hand, and it turned out well. Sure, next time I might make it when I’ve got more time and try it properly. I’m sure some Chinese FiveSpice powder would go well in there and maybe some Chinese sherry instead of Marsala, and hey, I’ll probably go to all that effort and it won’t have the same flavour as the original, but never mind. I guess I’m trying to impart the idea that with a little effort you can make just about anything and it will taste good, even if you’re not a rock star. It’s the food on the table, in the home, that keeps bellies satiated and people happy. Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LA TASKA SIDRERÍA Spring is here! Well, at least I think it is, though the weather is behaving so strangely for the time of the year – and I gather that the pollen count over the next weeks is predicted to be the highest for years and years. I tell you this because after a long life without any allergy to pollen whatsoever, I seem to be allergic to, wait for it, orange blossom pollen! In Valencia! Can you imagine? So the thought of increased levels really makes me very happy! Not. I am talking spring because, post-Fallas, the Comunidad is awash with things to do, much of it free or at ridiculously low prices – this weekend there was a wine fair in the Turia riverbed, a medieval market in the Carmen, coinciding with, I gather, some re-enactments of the conquest of Valencia. My own village had a local products fair entitled Tasta la Dipu, with craft demonstrations, wine and food demonstrations and even a virtual hang glider ride that was very popular with the punters. The following night my friend P and I had a reservation for 22.00h at La Tasca Sidrería, in C/ Conde Altea in Cánovas – I completely forgot about the wine fair in the riverbed and we drove. We had the Cortina recommended by the barman, an Asturian cider slightly less dry than the Galician one on offer. It was poured as per tradition from above shoulder height to the tumbler held low and was

nice and dry. Once served, the bottle had a little model of a man put over its neck which was to be our dispenser for the evening – a little button on the back, when pressed, pumped the cider into our glasses at just the right speed to simulate the overhead trick. Then we had our table and decided on the menu for two – four starters, a main course and dessert, and while we waited we took in our surroundings. We had jamón serrano with bread and tomato, followed by a huge salad of asparagus, tuna, lettuce and tomato. This was followed by chistorra (a sausage) cooked in cider and then we were served small, sweet and delicious clams. For our main course, P chose the bacalao (cod) which, when it arrived, was smothered in the same excellent clams we had for our starter. I ordered the entrecôte steak, poco hecho (rare) and it was wonderful with a very rich Idiazábal cheese sauce, perfectly cooked with delightful cubes of fried potato. For dessert I had pears poached in cider and P, on the advice of our waiter, had a chocolate tart with chocolate sauce, but this time we were so full, we hardly did our desserts justice. Let me say upfront that this is a noisy and very busy restaurant, it has a great atmosphere and the service is excellent. It was heaving when we went, both inside and out, but the waiters were attentive and friendly and seemingly unruffled by anything. It is run with great aplomb by the two brothers and a visit makes a great night out with good food to boot!

CHILL OUT / RESTAURANT

ANITA GIRO When Anita Giro first opened its doors in September 2009, the owners were very clear about the fact that, although the food served would be excellent and cheap at the price, people wouldn’t see the space as ‘just a restaurant’.

you get there early if you want a seat. The draught beer is a high-quality, ambercoloured bitter and at 3.50€ a pint it goes down a treat. Whether you ask for a caña, a half or a pint, it will be served with a bite to eat.

dinner or just a great atmosphere while you have a decent beer, there’s something for everyone. All of the staff speak English.

A year a half later and the girls have achieved just that. Incredible effort has gone into making Anita Giro a place people think to go to whether they’re up for a coffee on the sofa, beers and bravas on the terrace, cocktails at the bar, dinner on the tables inside, or kicking off their Friday or Saturday night with a few well-prepared drinks while listening to the DJ.

If you fancy going for dinner, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more economical option in the Carmen for the quality of food on offer, and you’re spoiled for choice between tasty tapas and more substantial dishes. Bean hummus, wild mushroom croquettes, duck confit and the house paté head the tapas list, while chicken pitas, roasted pork ribs with barbecue sauce and the ‘casserole of the week’ are offered if you need a more hearty meal. Once you’ve finished eating it’s the perfect place to have the first couple of drinks; at the weekend the bar plays host to a lively, mixed crowd sampling the cocktail menu and the house gin tonics, carefully prepared with lemon, cucumber or orange and cinnamon.

The big screen on the back wall was well used during last summer’s World Cup. Not all matches are shown as the owners prefer a more chilled out atmosphere at the weekends, although you can count on Champions League matches being shown on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Where the Spanish league is concerned, matches between the league contenders are put on and the girls are looking forward to the clashes between Real Madrid – Barça and then Valencia – Real Madrid later on this month. The last time Barça played Madrid back in November, it was standing room only, so make sure Article © 2011 24/7Valencia

There’s an event organized every month or so, and you should check Anita Giro’s Facebook page for an update of what’s happening at the bar. Whether it’s a rowdy bingo you’re after, the chance to listen to decent DJs while you have

Life in the Slow Lane Astronauts looking down on the city of Valencia have been surprised to discover that this is the brightest spot in Spain at night. The reason this causes such amazement is that the city has less than half the population of Barcelona or Madrid, not to mention its much smaller size. The explanation can be found in the fact that a few months ago Valencia was discovered to be Europe’s brightest city, and when I say bright I am clearly not referring to the city’s environmental planners. The annual cost of public lighting in Valencia city came to around 15 million euros, with one street light for every 8.7 citizens. In fact, the only time one sees many Valencia citizens economise on electric light is with their car indicators, which many resolutely refuse to use. Though Valencia took part with the rest of the world in the Earth Hour in March, if you were around during Las Fallas just before you will also have been able to see how some streets are lit up at this time of year so that one almost loses the sense of difference between daytime and night. And if you wander down to the beach at night, you may well be surprised that you can see

the waves so clearly. Valencia’s sandy beaches are so wide that when I first came here young lovers could smooch under the stars by the shore, but now they are so lit up by floodlights that I imagine even people from Ibiza can see the lovebirds making out. Perhaps it’s an advance warning system against tsunamis. The Valencian government has complained about recent measures to switch off certain stretches of street lighting, though it was the same political party’s last national government that actually introduced this measure into law.

had plans to build ‘Neutopia’ (Snowtopia), a huge indoor ski slope where one could enjoy chilly Swiss winter temperatures while the thermometers outside were hitting 40ºC. I don’t know if these plans still stand today, but sadly it would certainly come as no surprise to a veteran Valencia city dweller like myself.

It is important to remember that Spain imports 75% of the energy it uses and is therefore very susceptible to events beyond its control such as the recent oil crisis. The current national government decided to steer away from home-grown nuclear power long before the recent natural catastrophe in Japan (yet Spain continues importing it indirectly from France), and has made efforts to increase solar power use. The latter idea would seem to be patently obvious in a country where the sun is in plentiful supply, especially in this region. However, a few years ago Valencia still

All of this has become particularly significant lately due to the Libyan conflict and the resulting oil price hike (in Spain, petrol prices soared by the same amount in a few days as they had in the entire previous year, and are still suspiciously relatively higher than in comparable countries). The national government has brought in 20 new measures (including the aforementioned street light savings) in a bid to bring down Spanish energy consumption in a country which, according to a study by a university in Madrid, uses the highest amount of

Spain is also one of the bottom European countries in energy recovery using rubbish (as well as recycling less than half its rubbish while producing more than the European average).

* energy per inhabitant in Europe despite not being one of the most industrialised. Generally, these measures have been met with an angry outcry from the “I’ve got a right to have my TV on 24 hours a day even though I’m not watching it” sector of the population. As I’ve said before, such people may well have the right but they are most certainly wrong. One of the national government’s measures that has caused most indignation is the reduction in the top speed limit on motorways from 120 km/ hour to 110 km/hour (in other words, a similar speed limit to those in the UK or the USA). I myself hardly ever drive over this speed anyway, precisely because I’ve seen how much I save in petrol and because I’m fortunately never in a hurry when driving. Last summer, however, I drove on holiday across Spain with a Valencian friend who got extremely irritated at my ‘slow’ driving, so it would appear that some people simply like driving fast even when there’s no need to rush. I should add that many drive at least 10 km/hour over the limit anyway. But even taking the above into account, one has to remember that the biggest pollution problem created by traffic is at much lower speeds, and especially traffic jams. If you wish to appreciate this aspect of Spanish culture, try going for a paella in El Palmar on a Sunday afternoon. Here you’ll find the typical weekly Valencian pastime of sitting in traffic for hours as the sun beats down on the little metal wombs

when they could be enjoying the beach a stone’s throw away (and a pleasant bike ride from the city).

centre recently to locations such as the middle of El Retiro park, the city’s huge green lung).

One of the biggest differences between English-speaking and Latin cultures is that Latin peoples tend to live in the city centre as opposed to commuting to work there. This creates a great street atmosphere and cities with a decidedly ‘lived in’ feel like Valencia. It also means they don’t occupy such extensive areas per person. Whenever I fly over the southeast of England I am always amazed that all of the land is completely occupied by houses with their little gardens, with hardly any natural woodland. Nonetheless, this does not mean that the Spanish do not commute. It simply means they do it the other way around. On the outskirts of Spanish cities (and Valencia), you’ll find large industrial estates where many of the city’s inhabitants work. Surprisingly, however, you won’t find any public transport to these areas. Everybody has to go to work by car. Needless to say, in such small distances with everybody working at the same time, tailbacks are inevitable. I myself used to live in Barcelona, a far bigger city, and can affirm that the traffic jams there can be mind-numbing. Outside Madrid a few weeks ago, bad weather and an accident meant people who were driving back to the city were held up in their cars until past 4 o’clock in the morning. (Incidentally, the wife of Spain’s ex-president, José María Aznar, conveniently had Madrid’s pollutionmeasuring devices moved out of the city

The most surprising aspect of this is that it doesn’t seem to have occurred to the citizens and much less the government – regional or national – that public transport such as buses to work could solve this problem in a pinch (1 bus journey = 60 car journeys). In fact, the only bus I know in Valencia that sensibly takes workers out to the factory is run privately by the firm itself – ironically, a famous car manufacturer. Perhaps the reason for this impasse is that public bus transport is run by local town councils, which would therefore require agreements between them (and work, a four-letter word to many civil servants). For example, if you wish to visit the lovely Patacona beach (just north of the Malvarrosa), you may be surprised to find that most buses suddenly stop apparently half-way, then turn around. Presumably the reason for this is that technically they have reached the Valencia city limits and any further they would actually be entering the town of Alboraya (which ironically is run by the same political party). The upshot of it all is that, once again, the overlapping governments in Spain (municipal, regional and national) are incapable of agreeing to do what would seem to be plain common sense to the average citizen. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

CO N UN PAR! What better way to bounce back from the defeat against Barcelona, than going to Mallorca and coming away with the spoils. That’s exactly what Valencia did, even though they were one down after Ricardo Costa has rather clumsily handed the home team a penalty. The Chés came straight back and a minute later were on equal terms through Pablo “He’s got Marty Feldman eyes” Hernández. Young keeper Guaita managed to make a pair of great saves to keep his team in the game until Pablo latched on to a Jonas through ball and made it 2-1 to the visitors. Valencia’s new signing Jonas made his first full start and was most impressive, having a hand in both goals; he was also called up to the full Brazilian squad and made his debut against Scotland. However, the team’s defensive frailties were all too evident and would prove costly in the forthcoming weeks.

With morale high, the team set off for Germany to play the return leg of their Champions League tie with Schalke 04. After 15 minutes, the blanc i negres did what they had to do and scored first, thanks to some awful defending and Ricardo Costa scoring the opening goal. Things could not have gone any better, Schalke’s away goal had been cancelled out, Valencia were in front, the Germans midfield was missing in action and as for their defence, Joaquín was a constant menace down the flanks, setting up chance after chance for Aduriz who unfortunately had brought his sheriff star boots that day. Just before half-time the referee invented a free kick on the edge of the area that was gratefully accepted by the under-fire home side. Needless to say they converted it and the teams went in at the break all level. Emery’s team were still in shock as they came out for the second half and after a blunder from Guaita, Schalke took the lead, VCF tried to react but were unfortunately incapable of getting back in the game. A late, late counter from the Germans left a rather flattering scoreline of 3-1, but the match should have been Valencia’s, they just didn’t have the ‘cojones’ to go out there and win it.

This lack of mental fortitude has dogged Valencia for the last couple of seasons. Seemingly, the team lacks the belief in themselves and their capabilities, a problem that surely a manger should be able to solve. Why this problem, you may ask? Firstly, who is the leader of the team? Who is the player that commands respect in the middle? Who is Valencia’s new Ayala, Albelda, Baraja or Cañizares? It’s certainly not Banega, Topal, Soldado nor Mata. Strong leadership begins in the dressing room and filters through the team. Sadly, Emery’s early policy of ‘buen rollo’ has backfired on his squad’s mental discipline. His continuing changes and tinkering with the line-ups also means that there is no real solid core to the squad; everyone plays, no matter what. It is too late now to act with a ‘mano duro’ as players constantly lack respect towards the manager and the club (Miguel, Mathieu, Banega, Fernandes and most recently Vicente). If Valencia president Manuel Llorente does decide against renewing Emery’s contract, he will surely cite the fact that the young Basque manager has never really commanded the respect and discipline needed in the dressing room. The players themselves should also have a long look in the mirror and question their application and determination, too.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

The Chés performance against Primera strugglers Zaragoza was a prime example of this lack of belief and fight. It didn’t help that they were one down after four minutes, nor was it foreseen that after 30 minutes Emery would substitute Ricardo Costa to bring on Éver Banega, but Zaragoza simply wanted to win more than their opponents. Valencia were appallingly bad, they only had one feeble shot in 90 minutes. The ‘maños’ eventually routed VCF by a score of 4-0 and immediately the excuses came from the Valencia camp, that they were still deflated after their exit from the Champions League, they were still thinking of Schalke, they were tired, etc... ‘¡Un huevo!’ Valencia pay (and pay well) a manger to prepare his team for football matches. The fact that you lost on Wednesday doesn’t mean you have to lose the following weekend. It is his job to mentally and physically prepare the squad and unfortunately Emery has failed on several occasions. The next game promised to be easier for the Chés as the visitors were Sevilla who hadn’t kept a clean sheet away from home in the last 18 months. Guess what, Sevilla won 0-1 in Mestalla, this time round at least the team did put up a bit of a fight and had numerous occasion to score. The man in black overlooked two blatant penalties and Sevilla snatched an unlikely victory with twenty minutes to go. Once more the defending was comical, more in the Mike and Bernie Winters style, painful and predictable. With players such as Bruno and Dealbert, Valencia are going to find it almost impossible to keep clean sheets. The team’s rise up the echelons of the footballing world began with back lines with the likes of Djukic, Angloma, Carboni and Ayala. Now we have Navarro, Dealbert, Bruno, Maduro and Stankevicius, can you spot the difference?

VALENCIA WORLD

JULIE OF THE LAUNDRY STOP Could you tell us something about your background, experiences and travels? I was born in a small town near Antwerp (Belgium). I grew up in the countryside and after secondary school I spent a year in Peru. I later went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp to study restoration and conservation of Ceramics. After that I decided to study advertising & marketing, where I got the opportunity to come and study in Valencia. After my unforgettable experience and travels around Peru (what a country!), I was bitten by the travel bug and visited many countries around South and Central America and Europe. Why did you choose Valencia and has changed it much since you moved here? I came to Valencia through the wellknown Erasmus exchange programme. I got here on the first of September in 2003, a hot, sticky humid day that

ended in a gota fría rainy afternoon. I remember walking past the Central Market and Plaza Dr. Collado and thinking: “I think I could live here,” a feeling I never had had before in any other country or city. And here I am, still. I had a bit of troubles finding a room to stay, but ended up sharing a huge flat with 14 other people from all over the world. Another amazing experience! Our flat was right in the centre of El Carmen, I would never leave El Carmen again. I did study a bit, but more than that I started to really like Valencia and its corners, streets and people. After my Erasmus, I started working at the Home Hostels. Has Valencia changed? Yes, a lot. On a personal level, most of the people I spent my first years with have left Valencia, everything is more expensive, and I feel Valencia is losing its authenticity a bit, which is normal with the flood of tourists coming to Valencia. When I got here there were no planes to Belgium leaving from Valencia. Ryanair didn’t exist, then I started to know the real Valencia and its people, habits and lifestyle. Now I feel I’m part of the Valencian scenery. What I love about Valencia is that it’s a calm city; it’s almost a town with the character of a city. I love to stroll around town, love the Turia riverbed and the beach.

What is the Laundry Stop? After many jobs here and there I decided it was time to do something for myself. The idea of the Laundry Stop was born whilst working in the Hôme Hostels. Valencia didn’t have any laundrettes! So I decided to give it a go. The Laundry Stop is a small and welcoming cyber-laundrette. It’s situated right off Plaza del Tossal in the Barrio del Carmen, in C/ Baja. The idea was to make it a different laundrette, a place where doing your laundry would be fun, or at least chilled out…nice decoration, sofas, Internet, magazines, a multi-cultural meeting point! You can find us on Facebook or www.thelaundrystop.com Tell us about your hopes for the future. I’ve never been really good at planning the future, but I hope the Laundry Stop will survive this bad crisis Spain is going through, so that more and more people from all over the world and Valencia can come and clean their clothes! I also hope that people open up a little bit more and that they live and let live! Valencia is such a great place and there are so many things to explore. WOMAN

It has been a glorious Spring day today, the sun has been shining, the birds a-singing, people riding around on bicycles, enjoying picnics on the grass... or so I hear. I have been cooped up indoors nursing a hangover after hitting the Wine fair, hard, last night. It is this time of year, Fallas kicking off the proceedings, where everyone starts to take to the streets after work, and there are outdoor activities one may partake of every weekend – and this first weekend in April was no exception. After a long and super strenuous week at The Bank, I rounded up the troops and we all headed down to the riverbed for some drinking, eating and general merriment. Not the most original of ideas to be had on this Friday night, though – it wasn’t even 7 o’clock and the place was absolutely packed out. It was full of the rich and beautiful, the wine connoisseurs and the not-so-connoisseurs (us!). We bought our eight tickets for ten euros a head but soon realised, both from the queues we had to endure at the ticket boxes that we would probably be better off buying whole bottles of wine and whole plates of food between us if we actually planned on having a full dinner down there! They were being far less generous with portions than other years - I even tried sucking up to the old ladies on the cheese stand, to receive a lecture about how they make it, and

idiot pushed into me from behind. Not only did my dinner, not yet touched by me, slide straight to the floor, but my glass of wine, red, may I add, ended up all down my side and on my brand new pale grey plimsolls. Cheers, karma! Love you too! I suppose that will teach me for pushing in next time. The guy who knocked into me happened to be a friend of one of the boys I was with, but then who wasn’t? Aside from the hordes of people that had flocked to the fair, it was even more impossible to move from stand to stand as everybody knew everybody. It was obviously the place to be, word had probably spread that I was going, that was what it was.

then less cheese in my dish than the guy before me, who hadn’t said please or thank you. First bought bottle in hand, we decided to cash in our last food tickets at a barbecue stand in the corner, and, probably with a little Dutch courage from the four little glasses of wine I had just consumed, I took one look at the 20-minute line over to the other corner of the fair, and declared to my friends that we were going to push in. I meandered to the front, pretending to look at the signs, and subtly stood at the table next to a couple in their 50s who obviously had been waiting for the obligatory 20 minutes, and with a perfectly natural smile, put in orders for food to fill our trays, bought jamón ibérico baguettes, and got a hot dog for someone else. Very smug and rather proud of myself, I moved away from the table completely laden with goodies, handed out food to everybody, but couldn’t actually eat my own, as my hands were still full. Which is when karma, that dear friend of mine, stepped in and said, “Oh yeah, Anita, you think you’re clever, do you? Barging in in front of 30 people waiting patiently for a little tray of sausage? Well it’s not on! Take this!” And just as I was about to take the first bite of my deliciously appetising bocadillo de jamón serrano with its crunchy bread, fresh tomato and succulent ham, some

At 10 p.m., when the stands were supposed to be battening down the hatches and kicking us off site, my dear friend A. and I found a stand on the corner that was still, sneakily and on the down low, selling bottles of very nice red - and at 6 euros a pop! On our way back to the gang, we made a new...’friend’, who slurred at us saying how lovely we looked, and could we help him work out what to do with his brother. His brother who had just been released from Picassent Prison and who was lying on a bench, out for the count. It was at this point when I realised we should really be thinking about making a move, made polite excuses, and slipped off to find our friends and drag them away, asap!
