COMMENT

A Tale of Two Cities What would the late, great Valencia writer Blasco Ibáñez think if he’d known that a street with his name was about to literally smash through one of the traditional areas he made famous through his work? This ironic and controversial situation has been brought about by the plans to extend Avenida Blasco Ibáñez to the sea. In order to do so, the thoroughfare will have to plough through one of the city’s most idiosyncratic, historical districts – El Cabanyal. When elderly people from El Cabanyal go to Valencia’s city centre, they sometimes say, “I’m going to Valencia,” remembering the times not so long ago when El Cabanyal was a town apart. The new developments at the port area nearby have radically changed the seafront, helping to bring in the tourists and providing a few new chic bars whose owners have captured the idea of ‘chill out’ in their décor but not in their thumping music. Here you can wander by the Med, admiring millionaires’ yachts and see an area made famous worldwide with its America’s Cup hangars and the Formula One Street Circuit bridge that cost the taxpayer millions and is used about twice a year (it takes the place of another multi-million euro drawbridge that only saw a few years’ use). It may come as a

surprise to Valencia’s visitors, then, that if they stray a few yards from this spanking new leisure marina they can find an area of quaint but crumbling buildings where not everyone would dare to venture at night. This stark contrast between the money poured into the port (and gained, according to City Hall) and the apparent poverty a stone’s throw away is what leads many to suspect ulterior motives in the plans for the avenue’s extension. But not only do we find this huge economic gap here. In the Carmen area you can see the 15th century Silk Exchange, La Lonja, recently renovated with squillions of EU money, standing next to ruinous buildings draped in green netting to avoid chunks of wall crashing onto the heads of passers-by below (always look up when walking around Valencia’s older quarters, just in case). I myself was sitting on a bar’s terrace on the Plaza del Collado (just behind La Lonja) when one of these building’s balconies fell away, very fortunately killing nobody below. Some months ago I also discovered families of gypsies living under tin roofs about 50 yards from the entrance to Europe’s biggest aquarium, the Oceanogràfic. This area, the City of Arts

and Sciences, has needed a gigantic investment. There are two big shopping malls overlooking it, too. From one of these one can see what looks to be a large area of wasteland to the east. In fact, if you are brave enough to venture into this area, you will discover the city of Valencia’s only remaining huerta (agricultural gardens). You may even still be lucky enough to see the few remaining barracas, Valencia’s traditional houses for fishing and farming families with their typical, high-pointed gables. The area is criss-crossed by irrigation canals whose history may go back literally over a thousand years. However, as I say, from the outside it looks like overgrown wasteland. Nonetheless, standing here you can see some of Europe’s most avant-garde (and over-budget) buildings of recent years that have become symbols of modern Valencia to the outside world: the clamshaped Ágora, the shaded promenade of the Umbracle with the razorbacked science museum behind, the Oceanogràfic itself and Valencia’s highest point, the Azud d’Or Bridge, known to locals as the ‘ham-cutter’ due to its likeness to the boards used to cut cured ham legs. Needless to say, such abrupt contrasts in wealth around the city bring Article © 2011 24/7Valencia

the word ‘speculation’ to many minds and the suspicion that older buildings are simply being allowed to fall down in order to build new, supposedly more lucrative ones (though the economic recession may have left a few burnt hands in this respect, giving some bad experiences and good lessons). My own area of residence is near Cabanyal next to the beach, and it is no exception in terms of extremes in wealth. There are beautiful houses and mansions facing the sea that provide an example of what can be done with old buildings if there is money (in this case, they have mostly been renovated by private owners). Valencia CF’s ex-manager, Claudio Ranieri, lived here when he was busy squandering the club’s reputation and coffers. When coming back home by bus one evening to this area, I discovered just where the City Council’s priorities seem to lie. My usual bus stop had been moved about 50 yards further down the road, so that the stops were now unevenly spaced. “Aha!” I thought. “At last the local government is getting involved in changing local infrastructures to help the locals.” On closer inspection, however, I discovered they had moved the bus stop so that the owner of one of the mansions could get their swish car into their house without having to mingle with the local plebs.

Like all drastic urban development plans to change the face of a city, the plans to extend Avenida Blasco Ibáñez have brought citizens and politicians to argue fiercely for and against, and in this case it has also involved Spanish and EU governments and judicial authorities, too. Those in favour point to striking new developments such as the City of Arts and Sciences. However, this example was built on polluted land long in disuse, whereas the Blasco Ibáñez plan involves demolishing thousands of people’s homes (about 450 households). The original route plan has been changed to avoid relocating so many people (they will be given homes in the new avenue, apparently), but it still basically involves slicing the area in two, thereby disrupting traditions such as the only famed Semana Santa procession in the city. Ironically, it was a socialist government that approved the avenue’s extension plan in the late 80’s, and said party is now fighting bitterly against it now that it is in opposition. To my mind, there is one basic aspect of the plan that seems to have gone completely unnoticed yet which I find amazingly obvious. Firstly, the planned avenue will reach the sea around the Las Arenas beach area. Yet again, this is an area of curious contrasts. If you lie

on the beach here in summer, you’ll see the locals from El Cabanyal with their supermarket bags and ham sandwiches sitting among the manicured jet-setters with their Gucci bags and iced teas staying at the 5-star hotel just behind. This area is precisely where traffic already comes anyway (along Avenida del Puerto), creating a bottleneck that the planned extension to Avenida Blasco Ibáñez will simply add to. But then there is the parallel Avenida Los Naranjos further north. This road separates the city’s two big university campuses. Here, we find eight lanes that are empty at weekends and in summer – precisely when people go to the beach. It leads directly to the middle of the beach, thereby distributing traffic. Suspiciously, City Hall did knock down an unsightly building here, giving the perfect chance to bring this huge avenue to the sea – but instead they decided to plonk a cumbersome traffic island there whose purpose baffles me, leaving just one narrow road to the sea with a traffic light that seems to be permanently on red. I think it’s painted on…

VALENCIA MUSIC

CALDITO

CALDITO Tell us something about your life, travels and experiences I have always been a restless traveller with the desire to learn, from music as much as life. This is reflected in my songs, in my music I like to throw everything in the musical cocktail shaker... and then let the magic happen. In my daily life I have travelled to many countries, all over Europe and Latin America. I have played with musicians from different cultures and countries that have enriched me both musically and culturally. I have an absolute respect for any cultural expression, I don̓t care if it̓s popular or not. From the north, I learned to live with the cold, sadness and discipline. From the south, I appreciate the rhythms, the happiness, the colour, improvisation, and the collective. Life and music are presented differently in each country, everything is life, everything is music. I have played with bad musicians, average ones and great ones and I have learnt from all of them. Describe your new record and also the soundtrack to the award-winning film 'Bestezuelas' that is set in Valencia and which you act in My new album 'Jartito' came from the need to put out a collection of wellstructured, expertly recorded and excellently produced songs. This album has stripped-down songs like "Jartito" and others with electric arrangements like "Atormentao" as well as rock, flamenco and boleros. I’m probably unclassifiable as an artist, which has its good and bad side. It’s artistically satisfying but bad

for selling records. The soundtrack to ‘Bestezuelas’ is very rhythmic, which I believe goes perfectly with the scenes and fits the film like a glove. Juan Carlos Zapata on flamenco guitar and backing vocals and Nuno Alves playing trumpet made this soundtrack possible. How do you find Valencia as a city to live, go out and play live? I have lived for twenty years in Valencia and it has become a city without personality, dominated by extremely conservative and closed politicians. There is no help for creative people who are not connected to those in power, every day it is more and more difficult to perform live and live from one's art. Every day I have to find sustenance for myself and my family outside of Valencia. If you are comfortably off, Valencia is a great place to live and everyday there is more tourism because there’s plenty for them to enjoy. What are your plans? My plans are to keep trying to keep the fridge full, survive and to carry on singing until the day I die. You can hear me on my website, www.caldito.biz, and on Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, etc.

FOOD

Hungry Caterpillars Is everyone feeling relaxed and refreshed after their long, luscious summer? I do hope so, because, typically, I’m feeling completely exhausted but that’s mainly due to the fact we’re all bouncing bloody Leos in my house and thus summer marks the end of a long period of festivities.

Vanilla Butter Cake

vanilla beans in a big bowl using an electric mixer, if you have one, until light and fluffy.

• 250gm butter, softened • 1 tsp vanilla extract – or 3-4 pods split and scraped • 1 1/4 cup caster sugar (275gm) • 3 eggs • 2 cups self-rising flour (335gm) • 1/3 cup ground almonds (50gm) • 3/4 cup milk (180ml)

Add the eggs, one at a time and beating well to incorporate between each. Now, add the sifted flour and milk in two batches each, starting and ending with the flour. Fold in the almond meal and any alternate flavourings you may be using here such as orange or lemon rind. Spread batter into prepared pan and bake in the centre of the oven for around an hour. It is cooked when it springs back to the touch and a skewer comes out clean.

Festivities are fabulous, but somewhat taxing as I always get carried away and want to cater for all of them and make everything from scratch and by hand. It’s fun, and I love it, and at the time it seems like such a great idea, but afterwards, I’m knackered and I’ve really only myself to blame. This summer it was my son’s first birthday – whacko! I made it! I kept a child alive for a whole year and he’s growing and blossoming and becoming a real little boy and gush, gush, gush, it’s just an incredible achievement in my book. Let’s see how I’m going in another 18 years, eh? Anyway, not that he would even notice, but I really wanted to make him a cake and I really wanted to make something great and one gets all these fantastic ideas in one’s head about what to do and how to do and in the end, it’s actually quite hard! I thought kids’ cakes would be a cake walk, but they’re not. So, this month, in order to celebrate my totally modest success in my inaugural children’s birthday cake baking, I thought I would share my ideas with you. And for those of your familiar with ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, it is celebrating its 40th anniversary in print this year, so why not also dedicate a cake to it? I don’t think I’m the first and there’s no doubt I won’t be the last. It is also a particular favourite of my son and in a cake, it was something he recognised, which made it that much sweeter. There are loads of kids birthday cake ideas out there, some quite fiddly, and some appropriately simple and I know many mothers get stuck trying to

For a basic butter frosting beat 90gm of softened butter in an electric mixer until light and fluffy, sift in 1 cup of icing sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk and beat well to combine. You can colour this in myriad colours to make your caterpillar body and head. I used my discarded vanilla pods to make the feet and the antennae. do something that can really be very elaborate. Just think of a shape or a theme that your child adores and bake a big cake and cut it to fit. In the end, it’s really all down to the colour of your icing. I put a twist on a plain and simple butter cake. I would’ve liked to run with chocolate (and scissors – but that’s too dangerous), but chocolate can wreak havoc on a party with very young quests, so I went with vanilla instead. Normally, you only need a small amount of vanilla extract, which is absolutely fine, but I was extremely lucky to have a pile of vanilla beans that a friend brought back from Madagascar, so I thought I would vamp it up with fresh vanilla, and lots of it. It also adds a darker hue to a light cake, which is nice. I also substituted a little ground almonds for some of the flour, resulting in a lovely, moist crumb. I baked one large round cake, which I cut into a pear shape, you could make an orange, or an apple, or a strawberry, and you could even flavour the butter cake accordingly if you want to pull out all the stops. Then, I made another batch of muffins that become the body of the caterpillar. Preheat your oven to 160ºC for fan forced or 180ºC. Grease and line with baking paper a 22cm round cake tin or a 19cm square tin. Beat the butter and

Make sure you get a good-sized chopping board or some wood to make a cake board and cover it with tin foil. Put the big cake in place first and then ice it, ice each muffin separately and a good trick to do this without getting your fingers too mucky is to stab each muffin gently on the top with a fork so you can hold it and ice the sides of the muffin, then you can sit it in place and ice the top and you’ve no sticky finger marks proper job, like! If you want to cut the big cake in half and spread some whipped cream and fruit such as mango or strawberry inside, this will be lovely, but it’s also great on its own. It depends whether your eaters are more adults or children and what you think they’ll prefer. Most of all, have fun with it, it will be so nice to have made it yourself, even if it’s not perfect – who is? Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

La Galeria Dinner with Art On a swelteringly hot evening at the very beginning of September we met up with friends W & A at La Galería on C/ Baja, in the centre of the Barrio del Carmen. We were recovering from a visit to La Tomatina with a large group. We probably still stank of tomato even though we had had several pink water showers (where, oh where, does it keep coming from?). We were a little tired, too, so we needed something good to perk us up. We arrived on the dot of 22.00h, the time of our reservation, to find that W & A had beaten us by seconds, a major feat for all of us to be punctual. Paco, the owner, is a Valenciano who is not only friendly and open with a great attitude but also has a bit of English, which could be useful if you don't have much Spanish. He greeted us warmly and we asked him, as usual, to give us the specialties of the house to try. La Galería is a very nice open space, set in a typical old Valencian building with high ceilings, the walls adorned with paintings. It's a rolling exhibition with the works/artist changing every two months, hence the restaurant's name. Paco told us that he hangs the work for free and instead of taking a commission, he keeps a single work from each exhibition (budding artists, please note) and some of these are hanging on the railings of the mezzanine above you. There is a wealth of food to choose from and all the dishes are named after famous artists or wellknown galleries – Picasso, IVAM, Hermitage, and Miguel Ángel among them. We sat and chatted about how eventful the summer had been, over a glass or two of red

wine whilst we waited for the food to arrive. The restaurant offers a huge range of dishes, something for everyone, all suitable for compartiring (a bit of Spanglish there, meaning sharing with your friends!). First came a Tabla of Serrano ham and three cheeses, topped with raisins and walnuts and a sprinkling of olive oil and served with a basket of fresh bread. This was followed by Quesadillas – thin grilled tortillas sandwiched with delicious fillings, ours was chicken, onion and mushrooms, served with a bowl of chunky avocado salsa. It tasted as good as it looked and looked so good the table next to us asked where it was on the menu and promptly ordered the same. The next dish was huevos rotos, or Hermitage on the menu, roast sliced bravas-style potatoes, with Serrano ham and topped with fried egg, always best chopped up and eaten immediately. Such a simple dish but it always pleases! Paco then brought us bocadillos, a Miguel Ángel, comprised of beef, peppers, fried onion, tomatoes and mayonnaise, and a Bernim of chicken, roast vegetables and mayonnaise. We moved on to desserts as we were all getting rather full, but we could have chosen from a variety of great looking salads, pinchos, or even nachos. Desserts were lovely and very obviously homemade. We had Tarta de manzana (a pastry case filled with apple and almonds), a brownie and a delicious cheesecake with blueberries (arándanos) called the Tate. By the time we left after an excellent and reasonably priced meal, the place was positively heaving with people, not at all bad for a Saturday night and testament to its lively ambience and

great value food and drink. La Galería is a young and lively restaurant with a very Spanish crowd. The music is loud and it is really quite noisy when full. Great for a big group night out. If you want a quiet romantic dinner, get there early! Open every day 19.00h – 1.30h. Closed Mondays. Menu in English or Spanish. Flamenco with Kike Naval every Wednesday. Free WiFi. SHOPPING

ECORGÀNIC A different way to go shopping The ecological supermarket Ecorgànic has, in recent years, become a reference for ‘biological cuisine’ in Valencia. On their shelves you will find a very wide range of products ranging from vegetables to spices, breads and dairy products. This healthy approach to food and diet has been developing in Valencia in the last few years and the Ecorgànic Ecomarket emerged several years ago in response to these new habits and tastes. A great variety of products It is an ecological supermarket where you can find a great variety of natural products, including a large number of different yoghurts as well as vitamins, different types of rice, organic meats and chicken. There is also an abundant selection of spices from around the world, domestic cleaning products, physical therapy products, cosmetics and more. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

WHAT A START! Are you ready for another roller coaster season following Valencia Club de Fútbol? One more year of highs and lows, frustration and just a little ‘alegria’? If the opening match of the ‘temporada’ was anything to go by, then any Chés fan should think about taking a trip to their GP and asking for something to calm their nerves. Due to the players’ strike the first match of the season was at home against Racing Santander, a side that have all too often in the past been Valencia’s bogey team. Things really could not have got off any better as prolific striker Roberto Soldado opened the scoring after just one minute. Not content with his tally, he then went down the other end of the park and headed in an own goal. Things got worse as Racing hit the home team on the counter to take an unexpected half-time lead. Ten minutes into the second half the Cantabrians snatched a third, and

no doubt knives were being sharpened around Mestalla questioning the everunder-pressure Emery. Five minutes later, man mountain Rami rose above the rest at a corner and buried an unstoppable header. Could the Chés snatch a point from such a desperate situation? Mestalla got behind its team and Valencia dominated the match but could not find a way through. Jonas played a sublime pass into the feet of Soldado who scored the equaliser for the home team and sent the home fans into delirium. When Jordi Alba crossed a beautiful ball into the box two minutes later, there again was Soldado, who forced the ball over the line to grab an unbelievable injury time winner, and the crowd went berserk.

order to strengthen the back line. They have brought in Víctor Ruiz who was plying his trade in old Napoli although he is Catalonian by birth. After coming through the ranks at Espanyol, he was whisked away to Italy but Valencia have brought him back. He’s young, strong and quick and more importantly, he is a defender (not like Topal). Antonio Barragán has also been signed up after spells at several clubs including Liverpool where Rafa Benítez signed him as a 16-year-old promise.

After the euphoria of such a dramatic victory died down, questions were asked of the frailty of the Valencia defence and the tactical decisions of the manager. It has been well known all summer that the ‘blanc i negres’ were looking for a new centre back (which they finally found) but Emery’s decision to play Topal at the back almost cost Valencia the match.

To cover the void left by the fact that Valencia felt obliged to sell Juan Mata to Chelsea, they have signed Canales from Real Madrid, Piatti from Almería and Dani Parejo from Getafe. The club received just under 30 million euros for the inspirational Mata, a player who came for free and it would seem that the money has been well spent. Canales has been touted as the new Spanish boy wonder although his chances of success were damaged by his premature signing for Madrid, where he failed to guarantee a place in the starting eleven. If Valencia can bring out the best from the young Cantabrian, then they could have a real diamond in their midst.

These defensive mistakes have led the club to sign several new players this summer in

Many players have left, including Fernandes, Joaquín, Del Horno, Vicente, Chori

higher than that is pure fantasy as the rest of the teams struggle to compete with the big two who take 53% of all TV monies between them. If La Liga is not careful, we will end up with a similar situation to Scotland, where the top two battle it out year in and year out and standards slip as a consequence. By the way congratulations to the Tarbies after their magnificent Brigand Cup victory, better luck next year, Brucies!

DomĂnguez and David Navarro included, a fact that will lower salary costs and also will help stabilise the dressing room atmosphere. The season promises to be an interesting one as Valencia strive to achieve their one realistic aim, which is to finish third. Anything

VALENCIA WORLD would prefer to plan my future here but as times are so hard for everyone right now I might go to London to find some work from time to time although I am always open to good offers. I love the social side of life here where people seem to value their friends and family a lot more than they do elsewhere. I have a great social network but a very close friend has recently moved to live in London and I am missing her company.

JOHN TREACY Tell us something about your background, travels, and experiences I was born in Cornwall but my family came from Liverpool, where my dad worked with BBC Radio Merseyside. I played football for the school team when I was seven and began playing rugby at Newquay Hornets when I was seven. I played for the Cornwall Schools’ rugby and football teams and, at the age of 16, I signed for Plymouth Argyle Football Club. I had trials with Exeter, Wolves and Hull but started playing semi-professional rugby when I left school for Penzance Newlyn. I played in Ireland for Gary Owen in Limerick and also had a spell as a junior professional with Manly in Australia and Asti in Milan. Because the family was moving to Spain, I came to Valencia where I played for Les Abelles. I worked at Guru, one of Valencia's premier nightspots where I managed the bars and I have been teaching English as a foreign language in the city. I also enjoyed working as a DJ around various venues. What are you doing here at the moment and how do you find it to live? As a city I love Valencia. It is clean and spacious and a vibrant yet safe city. I

I play football for St Patrick’s, my local pub in Cánovas on the Gran Vía Marqués del Turia. It’s a great place to have a drink in and watch all the sporting events with friendly staff. St Patrick’s has been a great way to meet fellow expats here in Valencia, and seriously a good way to meet the local English and Spanishspeaking professionals in the community. Many good friends have been made in that pub. Could you tell our new readers about where you would recommend for chilling, partying and dining out in Valencia? If I was to recommend things to do to newcomers to Valencia, the first is to go to the top of the Miguelete as soon as possible. When I arrived to Valencia, it took me forever to find my bearings and really feel comfortable with the geography of the city. I got lost pretty much everywhere I went. All the streets looked the same!!! Especially at night!!! The Miguelete is the name of the bell tower for the main Cathedral in Valencia in Plaza de la Reina. Someone told me that you could go to the top and see the whole city 360 degrees round. My friend who knows Valencia very well came up to the top with me and pointed out all the important areas you need to know for going out to eat, drink, and dance. These are El Carmen (the old town), Ruzafa (the new El Carmen), Blasco Ibáñez (the student area), down by the Port (dress-toimpress part of town) and Cánovas (expat land). Also you get a good idea about how to use the Turia riverbed as a benchmark of how to find your bearings. After that day I didn’t have any more problems about finding my way around town. It was a godsend. In Valencia, you’re spoilt for choice of

restaurants. A few I like are La Tierruca on C/ Salamanca, 42. It’s a familyrun restaurant which specializes in Cantabrian dishes. It’s really well-priced and has great staff who serve with a smile (very hard to find in Spain). There is a little gem called La Francesa del Carmen on C/ Sogueros, 5, which is a little bit more difficult to find but well worth the trip. It is a small, intimate place where the chef and waiter are husband and wife, and has tasty food, great atmosphere and brilliant service. This is a bit more expensive but still will not break the bank (less than 30€ per head, including wine) and really nice to take your partner for a romantic meal. Pincho y Corto is a nice cheap restaurant in Ruzafa on C/ Doctor Serrano, 19 and, last but not least, if you’re a meat lover, go to Aquí Teruel in C/ Ruzafa, 7. Not the best atmosphere in the world and it is a bit pricey, but that’s where I go to get my meat fix every few months, it’s SO good!! A nice place to have a drink in El Carmen is called Los Picapiedra, which translates into Flintstones. They serve the booze in an individual way...if I remember rightly, they sell cider, calimocho (red wine and Coke) and beer in giant jugs designed to drink from so you don’t need to worry about glasses, really good to kick-start a night and all on a nice budget. Every Thursday, I will be DJing in Club47 in C/ Quart in El Carmen, where I will be playing different types of classic old and new tunes depending on the people there. So if you’re out and about on a Thursday, please pop by and say hello. Maybe we can have a shot together and I can put on one of your top tunes to make you move your dancing feet! What outdoor pursuits would you recommend for those new to Valencia? (Trekking, etc...) If you fancy a day out, I would definitely recommend Montanejos. It’s about an hour outside Valencia and has a great, five-hour nature trail you can walk with lots of stops, where you can have a nice refreshing swim, a must do if you like the great outdoors.

WOMAN

According to Facebook, on this very day one year ago I was enduring "the worst hangover of my life". Well, I obviously didn't learn because I have had a few more of those over the past few months, but as I predicted way back in July that it might be, this has definitely been my most chilled-out Summer ever. From all my super lazy afternoons down at the beach, be it El Saler, La Patacona or El Puig, I'm the brownest I've ever been in my entire life – but don't get me wrong, I've been rocking my factor 30+ all season and don't look anything like the average walnut-brown expat. I'm an extremely careful tanner and annoy the living hell out of all my, “I'm oliveskinned so I don't need sun lotion” friends as I slap cream on their shoulders, noses and knees every half-hour like a Niveawielding madwoman, but it’s a subject very close to my heart and something I believe everybody needs to be more aware of. No point burning when there's absolutely no need, I say, and I'd like to look as young as my lovely Mummy does at nearly 60 from protecting her skin all her life. It makes me die to see girls and guys in their teens lathering on the oil – yes, oil! – when the sun's at its highest in the sky. I dread to think what may become of them at 30 and 40 years old (NB, readers: a YouTube video must-see is "Dear 16-Year-Old Me", the most moving skin cancer awareness video I've ever seen). This year I've developed a gradual golden sheen I'm very proud of, and I thank the heavens every day for the invention of Bronzer in a handy powder compact to give me that extra boost every morning. Beauty essential par excellence.

to say, having been a Vodka devotee my entire drinking life, I was easily converted to Whisky and coke in just a few hours. My boy Professor Green rocked his set – I'm sure his backing artist was toootally giving me the eye. I could tell, even if he was wearing sunglasses – and I fell in love with Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner all over again. How he was rocking a leather jacket on such a balmy July night will remain a mystery to us all. The best show of the weekend by far was staged by Arcade Fire, with their ‘70s cinema theme and incredible set, but it has to be said we had the most fun in the JD tent watching the up-and-coming indie bands strut their stuff on a tiny stage in a dark and smoky marquee, as if we were in some east London pub watching friends score their first gig on a teensy stage. I'm a big fan of Ann Summers’ Sexy Skin body bronzer and tend to dust (or cake, depending on my mood) it over every visible bit of my body, but H&M also do a great compact, and the super popular Hoola by Benefit is available at El Corte Inglés. When it comes to make-up, the older I get the more I try and cut down my everyday basics (always looking for a way to get those extra five minutes in bed!), and even though I'm looking forward to the drop in temperatures, there is nothing better than reducing one's beauty regime to just a swipe of mascara, a dusting of bronzer and a lick of lip gloss for that gorgeous, effortless, beachy look. I am completely dreading that moment, in a few weeks to come, when the sight that meets me in the mirror at 7:00 a.m. is a ghoulish mixture of white, patchy, morning skin, visible bags under eyes, and blemishes from lack of vitamin D!! That can all wait, thank you Autumn!! The one thing I haven't got round to doing this Summer is surfing, but that would have required actually getting off my arse and making an effort to: 1). find a decent course, 2). get myself there, and 3). slide back into my fitness regime again, and that just didn't appeal as I sipped Mojito after Mojito on friends' terraces and lounged about every afternoon doing next to nothing. I will have you know though that I managed to make it to not one but two music festivals. First it was my old fave FIB up in Benicàssim, and much to my surprise, Heineken and its garish green seemed to have been kicked to the kerb in favour of the sleek black-andwhite of Jack Daniels as sponsors. I've always been a monochrome girl and I have

A few weekends later I braved the seaside destination of Burriana for another music festival on a far smaller scale but for perhaps even more fun. Arenal Sound is child's play compared to FIB, Summercase, Sonar, SOS Murcia etc., and the organisation was absolutely dismal, but it’s an entirely unanimous vote amongst everyone I've spoken to since, including all my friends and I, that we had the most fantastic time. There was one area of showers for 40,000 campers, the toilets were so blocked the whole week that people were doing what they needed to do in the sea, and the rubbish was piled up as high as my head for miles around, but the vibe was brilliant, everyone who was anyone in Valencia was there and the concerts and the venue were really not that bad at all. And all for under 40 euros including camping for the early birds, i.e. moi! I am extraordinarily lucky in the fact that not only was I being a little lazy this Summer, but I was also working Monday to Friday, so my friends, treating me like the princess I can be at times, arrived early in the week and set my tent up for me. Right in Camping A. Near the showers, the ice stand, the toilets, the hut where one charged their mobile and about five minutes from the door to the main arena. For someone who said they would never camp unless it was in one of those Tee-pees Kate Moss stays in at Glastonbury, I honestly could not have felt more pampered. And I was in the perfect location to nurse that festivalinduced hangover. More JD and coke for a hair of the dog, anyone?

A VALENCIA STORY

No Ham, No Life... by D. Blackwell

PART 1 “‘Most of the Muslims who were sick with Islam came over to Spain just to eat the cured ham,’” quoted Javi. “Everyone knows that life without ham is not life.” “Knock it off, man,” Miguel protested. “What difference does it make to you whether I eat fucking ham or not?” Miguel hardly had any choice about his diet. He was born with a condition that left him a chronic vegetarian. Deep down Javi felt sorry for him – he would never poke fun of his pale complexion, for instance – but he liked to tease him on the issue of cured ham, which was somewhat sacred in his opinion. “Because you sit there singing every style of flamenco there is; you’ve got the long, black, gypsy hair and everything – wonderful! – and you claim to be preserving Spanish culture, but it’s all a waste of time if you’re wasting perfectly good Spanish food, no?” “What the fuck, Javi! Who are you to have a go at me? You play fucking jazz trombone, for God’s sake. You’re the traitor to Spanish culture. Why don’t you stick to flamenco and lay off all that gringo bollocks.” Javi’s lip, with its perfectly groomed pencil moustache, snarled into a grin, exposing his gold-capped incisor, as he lapped up the insult with gusto. Really it was more of a compliment because being Spanish had nothing to do with it, if anything Javi wished he were a gringo. He had only cultivated the ‘ham denial as unpatriotic’ argument

as a way of getting at Miguel. It was worth it just to see his pallid little face leap out from under the long black locks in protest; to see those malnourished teeth gnarl at him. Javi – as his senior – felt he had the right to tease him mercilessly. Javi was one of the best ‘rumba’ flamenco players around and knew pretty much the same repertoire of flamenco as Miguel. They’d played gigs together way back when but these days Javi was only interested in his trombone. Javi, unlike Miguel, was sick to death of flamenco – and rumba more than anything else. He resented having to knock out that same rhythm night after night. The flamenco circuit bored him and playing on the streets for money was too tiring now that he was in his forties. George, the middle-aged Argentinean expat who sat with them now in the dimly lit bar, was always in awe of Javi’s ability to whip up a crowd at the drop of a hat. He was particularly perplexed as to why Javi had recently given up playing rumba guitar and taken up jazz trombone. “You’re amazing, Javi, the people go crazy when you play rumba, all the chicks shaking it.” He took a sip of his chamomile tea. It was still too hot and it steamed up his glasses. He took them off and wiped them with his handkerchief before continuing. “I’d kill to be able to do that. So what’s the deal with the trombone? You get a room full of people dancing with your rumba every time.” “The problem is, George, that in Spain you don’t need to do anything to get a room full of people to dance. I might as well just bang two bloody spoons together. I’d get the same effect.”

George saw the logic in that. The thing that caused him the most consternation was that Javi was learning to play an antique trombone with no slide. It was a real oddity and it seemed a little pointless to George, a jazz musician himself. Where was the fun in playing a trombone that didn’t slide? Javi was dedicated enough to learning the instrument, but Jorge confessed to mutual friends that he didn’t really care to hear him play; though he always went to any gigs because Javi was the closest he had to a best friend. And the concerts were always full of good looking young girls that he could kid himself he was still young enough to woo. The three of them, Javi, George, and Miguel, were all at The Bodegueta, trading the same old insults as always. They had covered the ground of Miguel being a traitor for not eating ham, but this time it was destined to go a little further. “So, Miguel, George is really excited ‘cause I’m taking him back to my hometown this weekend.” “Oh yeah, you’re from Formixe, right? Never been myself, hear it’s laid back. Kind of a quiet hick town, innit?” “Laid back….?”Javi exclaimed, in mock shock at the idea that Formixe was an eventless backwater. “Oh, well, laid back, ya say…umm, I suppose most of the time it’s not untrue, but next weekend is the town festival.” Miguel’s curiosity was piqued. “Oh yeah?” “Yes, sir,” Javi said with an assuredness that was a little ominous, “you up for it, are you?” Miguel shrugged his shoulders in a way that the three of them recognised as consent. Javi grinned, his gold-encrusted tooth glimmering in the dark bar’s half-light.
