CAFÉ NEGRITO EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW It sometimes happens that a bar or a shop or a restaurant becomes so synonymous with its surroundings that it's hard to separate it from them. The bar and the square become one and the same place. This is certainly the case with the Barrio del Carmen's Café Negrito and the plaza of the same name on which it stands. You almost find yourself wondering which came first, the bar or the plaza, and it seems impossible to imagine one of them existing without the other. In actual fact Plaza Negrito was originally officially christened Plaza de Calatrava, taking the name of the street that crosses it, but to local people it was always Plaza del ‘Negrito’ in reference to the bronze statue of a small boy in the square's fountain, which had blackened over time. Eventually this became the square's official name. Installed in 1850, this was the first fountain in Valencia with drinkable water. People, it would seem, have been coming to Plaza Negrito for a quiet drink under the lemon trees for over 150 years. Also in the square in the corner, where C/ Calatrava enters from La Lonja, is Palacio de los Lassala, bought from the Marqués of Castellnovo in 1750 by the French family of the same name. It doesn’t look much from the outside but inside, by all accounts, it is a sumptuous mini-palace with an extensive art collection, a famous

library of 17,000 antique books and a collection of newspapers from the last three centuries. The house is still the family home of the Lassalas and is not open to the public. Had it not been for Cafe Negrito, the plaza would no doubt just have been another unknown dusty corner of the Carmen by now. When I got to know Negrito in the early ‘90s, unlike many other bars in the Carmen at the time, it didn't specialise in a particular type of music or punter so it was never intimidatingly cliquey. It was an everyman sort of place, appealing to all types and different ages, where most were made to feel welcome. That's not to say it has ever lacked in personality, it has always had an artsy feel with its regular exhibitions and trademark artist palette-shaped tables, but never to the extent that you wouldn’t feel part of it. Its always-open French windows allowed people to spill out all over the square, and the doable prices and funky but friendly bar staff meant that, for many, a night out in the Carmen would always mean at least having one or two in Negrito. The legendary queues for the toilets were not so popular but, hey, you can’t have everything. Although the ‘Amics del Carmen’ (‘Friends of the Carmen’ neighbourhood group) and the ZAS laws (restrictions

for ‘excessive’ noise) put paid to the French windows and the toilets have vastly improved, the beauty of Negrito is that none of what made it what it was has changed much over the years. In the early evening, you can sit on the terrace amongst the trees listening to the water rippling in the fountain but it’s later on, as a nightspot and meeting point, that it really comes into its own. People say it is a barometer of Valencia night life. If Negrito is empty, you may as well go home because everywhere else will be, too, but if it’s heaving, you know it’s going to be a good night. Interview with JUAN VÁZQUEZ VÁZQUEZ, owner of Café Negrito When did it all start? The 8th of November 1981, just five days after my 20th birthday, so this year in December we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the bar and my 50th birthday. Has Negrito always been in the same place? At the beginning, it was just on the other side of the square until the building was declared a ruin by the powers-that-be and pulled down. We had to close but luckily we got the place where we are now. We Article © 2011 24/7Valencia

now also have ‘La Negrita’ next door. We call it the “little sister”.

Any special customers you’d like to mention?

You must have seen a few things change around here?

We’ve always been popular with the actors from the Talia, Olympia and Principal theatres. Some of them have been coming here off and on for years, like Juan Echanove or the members of El Tricicle. Carmen Alborch and Francis Montesinos are also regulars. Eduardo ‘Calpurnio’ designed our logo in the ‘90s. I was an art student and we have a lot of friends who are artists, that’s how the exhibitions started, although lately for a number of reasons we haven’t done as many. All customers are special in a way and we get people from all over. There have been times when this place felt like you could have been anywhere in the world with all the different languages spoken. Some of our customers got to know us as Erasmus students or when they were here as language teachers and come back and see us when they are over on holiday.

In those days the Barrio del Carmen was almost a no-go zone, less people lived around here, and it was frequented by drug dealers and dodgy types and largely avoided by the well-heeled folk. Only ‘los progres’ (political, avant-garde bearded types from the ‘70s and ‘80s) and other outsiders dared to come. It wasn’t a place you passed through during the day. We were an island in the middle of dark, dangerous, dusty narrow streets. It was great! What do you think of those who bought a house here because they liked the atmosphere and then put up the “Volem Dormir” (“They want to sleep”) signs and complained about the noise? In some ways they are destroying the area. They came to live in a bohemian neighbourhood because they enjoyed the crazy nightlife and now they want to stop the next generation having fun. For good or for bad, the Carmen is no longer on the outside and has fully integrated as just another part of the city. Much of the feel of before has gone but it’s cleaner and safer, more people live here and there are more services. It’s better looked after.

Thirty years is a long time. What’s your secret? The way you treat people is important. Treat people the right way, be polite and friendly, have good quality products and create an atmosphere that makes people feel welcome both inside and out on the terrace. It’s important to work with good professionals who you enjoy being with and who understand what the place is

all about. A lot of our bar staff have been here for more than ten years and we still have good relations with everyone who has worked here over the years. What are your most popular drinks? At the moment a lot more people drink beer and less shorts, less gin, whisky or rum, perhaps it’s the recession! I suppose it’s all just a question of what’s in fashion. Valencia has never been a place for cocktails. We’ve always been about beer, agua de Valencia, cubatas and gin tonics. There have been times when it seems like everyone is drinking rum; at the moment gin is more popular. We also sell quite a few mojitos. To finish up, how would you describe the life of a Valencia bar owner? Always changing. Lean periods and periods of success. You need a lot of imagination, enthusiasm and the verve and energy to keep going forward. You need to be adaptable to new ways of doing things and how they are going to affect you and, of course, you need to be prepared to work at it.

VALENCIA MUSIC

JOSH ROUSE AND THE LONG VACATIONS contemplate living in...but times change and I love the peace and quiet, the lack of traffic and my family is my life apart from my music. That said, I'm looking forward to having a change of scene with the upcoming tour of Spain in November. Tell us about the new album.

JOSH ROUSE “Happiness comes without warning...in the south of Spain” Josh Rouse is one of North America’s most popular folk-pop-alternative singersongwriters. His music has appeared on film soundtracks and classic television series like Six Feet Under and albums like ‘Nashville’ and ‘1972’ have won him critical acclaim and the chance to tour the world. He has gigged from the States to Spain and Scandinavia to South America ...via Valencia. He modestly says he is surprised that he has any fans and yet he has sold a lot of records over his long career and has over 28,000 friends on his Facebook page. He has set up his own Bedroom Classics record label since moving to Spain. Josh has been based in Valencia for a number of years and is married to Valenciana artist Paz Suay, who he met at one of his concerts in the city. On a sunny midweek morning, 24/7 Valencia met up with Josh in the Barrio del Carmen for a drink and a chat about the new album, simply titled ‘Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations.’ How is life? Good. We’ve just had another boy, born this summer and I now live with my wife and two kids in the Valencia countryside on an urbanización for 800 people. It’s the kind of place that, five years ago, I would never

It is called 'Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations'. It was mostly recorded in my studio in Valencia and features my band of local musicians and a few guests. It was mastered in Nashville, where I lived before moving to Spain. I lived all over the States as child and teenager, coming from a military family, but Nashville is where I spent most of my adult life. Nashville is also the name of one of my most popular albums. My longterm aim would be to write 12 classic songs for another album one day but I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, either. Sometimes it’s fun to take it easy and just enjoy the music. This latest album sounds effortless in the best possible way. There's occasional touches of the Kinks, the Beatles, bossa nova and the Eagles and yet it is very much your sound. It’s mainly acoustic, understated and really well-crafted, and dead catchy, too. Glad you like it. It was recorded mostly live in the studio. It’s good not to sound like you are trying too hard and yet still come up with something that is not amateur. It has to compete and it is out there on the international radio so the production is important. The mixes sound different on the radio! Why are you now playing with local musicians from Valencia? I was playing with American musicians but you can’t keep flying people over, it just isn’t realistic. I’ve been playing with Valencian musicians Xema Fuertes (vocals, tres cubano, guitar, banjo and drums) and Cayo Bellveser (background vocals, bass and piano) for some time now. You caught the show we did last winter at El Loco in Valencia for the ‘El Turista’ album tour. Abroad, we also played as a band in London at the Camden Jazz Café this year and we had a good time! Why do your recent albums tend to be quite short in length? There’s too much music about and I prefer to present my albums that way. Only the Beatles

should do double-albums! Take us through the songs of the new album, ‘Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations.’ Diggin' in the Sand – I wrote it based on a kalimba (a type of African thumb piano) riff. We then added banjo and marimba. Movin' On – It is a song about changes, adolescence, the painfulness and the quirkiness of that time. Fine, Fine – It is in 7/4 time. It is about touring life and life as a musician. To the Clock, to the City – About urbanisation, the rhythm of city life. Bluebird Street – A sad, lonely song about the only kid on the block. It’s about finding friends when you’re younger. Lazy Days – This has a Leon Redbone influence. A New Orleans blues-jazz, vaudeville-style musician. Oh, Look What the Sun Did! – It is an old song but not about anything in general. The video was shot in Malvarrosa. Friend – This is a dark, jazzy one about going back to a place where I grew up and finding somebody you knew hasn't necessarily changed and still has their demons. I spent some time growing up in Clarksville, Tennessee. Yes, the same town the Monkees sang about! Disguise – This is a song with different images. It is about love and keeping the attention of the one you love. Thank you for your time and good luck with the tour. Any wishes for the future? I just hope to be able to continue doing what I do, touring and keep making records! Before, I used to only play only about three gigs a year in Spain. Now live music has become more and more important for a musician’s livelihood. My plan now would be to play more like 20 to 30 concerts a year in Spain. Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations play El Loco, C/ Erudito Orellana, 12 (Zona Juan Llorens) in Valencia on November 26. See www.joshrouse.com for more details. FOOD

Green Me Up, Scotty! I’m starving. So hungry, in fact, I could eat a donkey. My stomach feels like it is wrapped around my spinal column, I feel weak in the knees, my mouth is like the Gobi and I’m starting to shake. I’ve only had a croissant for breakfast, coffee for lunch and what I really want is a big, juicy Argentinean (steak!) from Mattilda’s, but they’re not open yet – gasp! I generally crave a steak, or junk food, when I’m really hungry – I think by that stage we’re all searching for the monster chew, the meal that will totally satisfy and satiate us. Tofu and wilted greens is generally not what I think will cut the mustard. But I’m going to give it a go and let you all know that it can be just as wonderful a meal as any other of our favourites.

Green Gremlin Tofu • 1 square (packet) of firm tofu – about 500gms • 1 teaspoon of your favourite Thai curry paste • 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon of veg stock paste or a cube dissolved in 1/4 cup hot water • 1-inch knob of ginger • 2 large cloves of garlic • 1 stalk lemon grass (optional) • 2-3 field mushrooms • 1-2 courgettes • 4-5 spring onions • 1 small handful of mustard greens/ Asian spinach • 1 small handful baby spinach • A few sprigs of basil/Thai basil/ Vietnamese mint • 1/2 bunch coriander

I was vegetarian for a long time when I was at university (ha, weren’t we all??), but I was a proper vego, none of this, “Oh, I still eat fish and chicken” rubbish! I was vego for nearly nine years, and I LOVED it, I didn’t miss meat at all, ever. I do really like meat again now, though, and I think it’s an important part of most people’s diets, in small amounts. But, what I’m trying to get across is how great alternatives can be, and that we can look forward to them equally as much, that we really don’t have to force feed ourselves with them every time we go on a crash diet.

entertaining. Chop the tofu into small cubes. Mince the garlic, ginger, and lemon grass with a knife until quite fine, you can grate the ginger, put them in a food processor or mortar and pestle, whatever is handy. Slice the mushrooms finely, about 1 – 2mm thick, and also finely slice the courgette and spring onions, including most of the green tops.

Head to the Mercado and grab as many fresh green leaves as you can, mustard greens, baby spinach, spring onions, sorrel, rocket, curly kale, coriander, mint, Thai basil or normal basil, silver beet (chard), beet greens, Vietnamese mint... these all grow really well and easily in pots, so gets some seeds and plant some up on your terrace, then you can pick away at will.

Rinse the greens you’ve chosen in fresh water and set aside to drain. If you have large-leafed greens, you can choose to finely slice these, too, and it will be easier in the pan that way as well. Put some rice or noodles on to go with the stir-fry. Choose a really big saucepan, or preferably a wok and preferably over a gas flame, and get all your ingredients ready beside it.

Please don’t let the long list of ingredients deter you, you can really omit and add to your heart’s desire, if you’ve only got curry paste and no aromatics, don’t worry, it’ll still be good. It really depends whether it’s just for yourself in a flash, or you’re

Heat some rice bran oil or ground nut oil in the wok until quite hot, add the curry paste and stir until it loosens, add the aromatics; garlic, ginger and lemon grass and the tofu cubes. You want the tofu to absorb a lot of this flavour, so you can

stir fry the tofu for a few solid minutes first before adding anything further. If you allow the tofu to sit for a while in between stirring, it will also allow it to brown on each side. After a few minutes, with the heat still really high, throw in the mushrooms and courgettes, just a handful at a time to keep the heat in the pan. After just a few minutes, add the stock and sesame oil. Now throw in the spring onions and then the greens, keep stirring and tossing nonstop. Just as the greens are wilting, add the herbs, give it a couple more seconds and turn off the heat. Serve immediately with your rice or noodles and lots of icy cold beer. I know, I’m normally a wino, but what is it about Asian food that makes it so good with beer? So do please give this a go, I promise, it’s absolutely lovely and really good nosh... and now I don’t have to bang on about eating your greens and not having to need steak and creamy things all the time. I’ll bring you something more sinful next month! Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Co-owner Juan Carlos

La Pilareta When we first moved to these shore many moons ago (wow, how the years roll by!), I had heard from friends how you are inundated with ‘friends’ who are just passing through on their way to so-andso and could one stay a night or so on the way? It did happen, but not as much as we expected because the other question would always be, “Are you on the beach where you live?” We would answer truthfully that we were a 20-minute drive from said beach and no, we didn't have a pool. Once they had gleaned this from us they were usually, unless they were real friends, suddenly in more of a hurry to reach their destination. However, a few years ago we were living in the very centre of the city in a huge flat with great views across the city. As a consequence, we were suddenly more popular as a stop-off destination. We had many a fun weekend with visitors glued to the view and the events happening way below them in the square we towered over. One weekend we had a niece coming to stay with her best friend S (who we didn't know) and, just before their arrival, she called to ask if it would be OK if her friend S’s brother M (who we didn’t know from Adam) could join them – he'd sleep on the floor and be no trouble. We said of course not, we'll make him up another room. They all arrived and we had a really wonderful weekend, they turned out to be perfect guests and great fun to be with. They also fell head-over-heels in love with Valencia and were eager to see and experience everything. They also loved their food, which immediately endeared

them to me. We took them to some of our favourite restaurants and bars. All of which they loved. On their last night, I suggested we went to a favourite little bar of ours in the Carmen. “It's a typical bar,” I said, “very much a barrio bar, but the food and the atmosphere are great.” We took them to La Pilareta (or Bar Pilar, as I have always called it). As usual there was a queue, but I went to the front and got my number from José, the maitre d’ and voice of La P. I then pushed my way to the bar to get us a bottle of wine, their own unlabelled but surprisingly good Rioja, and some glasses to quaff whilst we waited for our number to be called. La Pilareta is basically a long bar down one side of the place with buckets along its base (more on these in a minute) and old glass cabinets above holding ancient bottles of gin, brandy and sherry and other assorted liquors and wines. On the other side are low tables and even lower stools packed with diners crouched over little dishes of tapas and mussels against old black marbled tiles. Above their heads are framed newspaper clippings on the history of this old bar. The clochina is king here. Clochinas are mussels, as are mejillones. Clochinas are Valencian, are smaller, sweeter, and have a shorter season (May to August) than mejillones. And any Valencian will tell you – clochinas are far superior to the larger mejillones. This old bar has been serving the best of both of these crustaceans for years. They claim to sell four tons of the things during March, the month of Las Fallas. The buckets on the floor? For the empty shells, of course.

It's a noisy place at peak times, the waiters shout the orders to the kitchen at the far end of this long bar and the barmen shout back, and José shouts our number when a table comes free. We sit. We order. Nothing fancy, just quality tapas the way they have been serving them since 1917 (that date makes it one of the city's oldest eating houses), Patatas bravas, Habas (herby and delicious broad beans), the Valencian speciality Esgarraet (salt cod and peppers), mussels, of course, and Sepia a la plancha, which is grilled cuttlefish. The place was an instant hit with M who now returns each year and we make a pilgrimage to La Pilareta. Like me, he loves the whole atmosphere of the place, the hustle and bustle, the characters who eat there and most of all the food, in particular those spicy mussels. No coffee is served. “No time!” say the barmen. Quite right, too. I regularly eat at La Pilareta (after many years being known as Bar Pilar) with friends and family, it is such a pleasant way and inexpensive way of spending a few hours and eating good home-cooked Spanish food. All dishes are around 5 – 7 € each and a glass of wine will set you back around 2€. It fully deserves its reputation that has become pretty worldwide – just check the glowing reviews all over the web. CHILL OUT / VEGETARIAN TAPAS / ANARCHIST BOOKSHOP

LIBRERÍA ASSOCIATIVA SAHIRI Special. Over eight years old and set in the historic centre of Valencia, Sahiri is just a stone's throw from the Mercado Central and found behind La Lonja. It is fondly known as ‘The Anarchists’ Bookshop’ and the welcoming staff, who are anarchists, are quite happy with that description. This is a bookshop with a difference, replete with vegetarian restaurant and events like live music, meetings on subjects of the month and poetry readings throughout the year. 24/7 Valencia are regular visitors to this hidden gem. The good people of Sahiri include a warm, Andalusian vegetarian chef who went from Valencia to his native Cádiz and back for his summer holidays... on his bike! That was a 1,600 km round trip. There is also a charming Danish waiter who speaks fluent Spanish and English and is often able to inform you about your choice of tapas or drink with a smile and witty aside. It's a warm interior, with wooden tables and plenty of groups at the weekend. The atmosphere is pleasantly tolerant, which makes for a chilled out, healthy meal in good company. The service is genuine and relaxed and the food is lovely, too. There is a great mixture of salads with toppings including carrot, beetroot and

spinach. Tablas include vegetarian pizza and tasty, different-coloured cheeses on a bed of tomatoes and olives. Many of the dishes are good for those with gluten issues. Their bocatas are a real strong point as the bread they use is whole-grain and variations of this type of pan, including negro de malta. Ingredients include tofu, mushroom and hummus choices. The dessert of the day is homemade. Last Saturday, when a couple of the 24/7 Valencia team went along for a meal, we rounded it off with a delicious chocolate cake that smelt lovely and was tasty, too. For our meal, we enjoyed a young Rioja, served by the jug, and to round off the night we had a Baudelaire ‘mistela’ and a Rimbaud ‘brandy’. If you like fruit juices, you can enjoy an Isadora Duncan pineapple juice among others. Infusions include an Isabel Allende Pennyroyal tea (Poleo). Beer lovers have the whole range of Damn (the Catalan beer) to choose from, including Malcolm X and Jack Lemmon! Expect to pay between 25-30€ for two, with wine included. The music soundtrack includes Afro-Latin, flamenco, jazz, reggae, rai & punk! If you have some Spanish you will find the menu riddled with humorous, philosophical titles. It

was a mostly Spanish crowd the night we went but they do have Erasmus visitors, too. In the bookshop room run by Oscar, the books are in Spanish and Catalan and cover a wide range of topics including anarchism, feminism, sexuality, gender, ecology, socialism and more. Incidentally, they tell us that the name Sahiri comes from “the cry that the women of North Africa make, vibrating with their tongues, a cry of resistance and pride in being Arabic and women”. Sahiri is a meeting point, it’s fun, informed, a bit different and healthy too. They try to combine quality product with reasonable prices. We keep going back. This is a place that deserves your support. Check them out on Facebook Asociación Sahiri Librería. They are open to your proposals. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Back to Normal After the frantic game against Racing Santander, Valencia have settled back into their usual mode of effective but not eye-pleasing football. The second game of the season promised to be a cracker as the visitors were Atlético Madrid, a team that have spent quite a lot of euros this summer in search of that elusive Champions League berth. Arda Turan and Diego are two top-class players and the fact that they went and spent 40 million euros on a forward (Falcao) shows that the colchoneros ‘va en serio’ this season. The Chés started the better of the two sides in what was a cagey match, both keepers being tested in the first half without being beaten. Sandwiches were still being

consumed at the start of the second half as Miguel whizzed down the right wing and crossed a sublime pass to Soldado, who obliged by heading home. Only then did Atlético manager Manzano decide to bring on his new signings of Turan and Diego but they found the Valencia defence resolute, led by Rami and Ruiz. And thanks to some fine saves from Guaita, the blanc i negres held on for the full three points. They then travelled to Belgium for the first match in this year’s Champions League against group minnows Genk. Unfortunately, it was one of those days that nothing went right. Valencia had control of the game but were incapable of making it count, their best chance was a superb overhead kick from centre-back Rami that rattled the crossbar. If it hadn’t been for keeper Diego Alves right at the end, then the team may have left Belgium with ‘nul points’. The draw, however, was seen as two points dropped rather than one point gained.

Valencia’s first away league game of the season saw them off to Asturias to take on Sporting Gijón. The first half was all Valencia who controlled the ball quite brilliantly; Sergio Canales started his first match in Valencia colours and was instrumental in the fine first half display. Lord knows what the Sporting players added to their half-time cuppa but they came out in the second half a different team. If it hadn’t been for Guaita in the nets, the Chés could quite easily have lost the contest, but the young Valencia keeper was faultless and yet again his team took the spoils. Then came the Big One, Valencia against Barcelona in Mestalla. After witnessing the stumbling performance a few days before, many could be forgiven for fearing the worst as the league champions stepped onto the pitch. Almost immediately those fears were dispelled as Valencia went for the jugular. Tactically, Emery was spot on and Guardiola was not. The Barcelona manager’s policy

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 Alba vs Mata of playing three defenders meant that with Jordi Alba and Mathieu doubling up on the hapless Mascherano at makeshift right back, Valencia got to the byline time and time again. After eleven minutes Mathieu beat the defence and crossed in for the unlucky Abidal to score in his own goal. However, Barça are champions because they never lie down and they came right back to equalise barely a minute later. Valencia, however, maintained their intensity and were rewarded ten minutes later when Pablo knocked home yet another cross from the left wing. The Catalans were somewhat in disarray and in the last minute of the first half Soldado had a chance to make it 3-1 but failed to connect. The Catalans re-formed at the break and came out meaning business. The Chés were lucky to only concede the equaliser in the last 45 minutes and even had chances of their own but a 2-2 draw was a fair result.

the equal of the English visitors. After the break it was a different story. Chelsea dominated the game and if it hadn’t been for a magisterial performance from Diego Alves, VCF could have been four or five down. The Brazilian keeper literally had the game of his life but was still incapable of stopping a Lampard shot that gave the visitors the lead. With three minutes to go, Kalou inexplicably handled the ball in the area, Soldado converted the spot kick, and a 1- 1 draw almost tasted of victory. Granada were the team’s next opponents in Mestalla and after Sergio Canales’ first goal for Valencia after only three minutes, a stroll in the park seemed on the cards. As we have seen recently, when Valencia take their foot off the pedal they usually encounter problems, this time was no exception. Granada fought back and dominated the second half and were extremely unlucky to leave Valencia with nothing to show for their efforts.

Three days later they went to Sevilla and played as bad as they had played well against Barça. They were lacklustre, slow and seemingly unmotivated against a Sevilla team who used all their guile to get Aduriz sent off after they had already had two of their own players shown the red card. The reactions of Navarro and Escudé in getting Aduriz into the early bath should be punishable, too, but this is Spain and disgraceful, unprofessional behaviour seems to be rewarded here rather than punished. Sevilla won after Banega failed to convert a penalty and Valencia suffered their first loss of the season.

October will see Valencia travel away to Mallorca and Zaragoza whilst home games against Bilbao and Getafe will show us if they are capable of maintaining their impressive run. The most important fixture will be in the Champions League away against Bayer Leverkusen, where a point would be important and three would be a godsend. As I write this, Levante UD are co-leaders of La Liga with Barcelona, having beaten Betis away from home!

A few days later Juan Mata came back to Mestalla, this time dressed in the colours of his new team, Chelsea. The first half saw Chelsea come out stronger, although when the home team reacted, they were

The Big Picture As Valencia has found itself increasingly on tourists’ itineraries, it is also becoming far more common to find oneself dodging tourists’ cameras on its streets. One has to scoot around people taking photos so as not to appear in other people’s cherished images for decades to come. When I lived in the centre of Barcelona many moons ago, I was accustomed to this phenomenon of living in a place that people like to photograph, but now I find I have to get used to it again. People who live near famous landmarks around the world know what I’m talking about. A simple walk to the grocer’s or the baker’s or whatever becomes a complex, zigzagging route as you dodge the lenses or mumble, “Sorry”, as you inadvertently cross their path. Or you may even be stopped several times to take snaps yourself. A cantankerous friend of mine who got fed up with this used to take the photos and cut off the smiling people’s heads in the picture. Of course, this was before digital cameras when you had to wait to get the pictures developed. Said friend is a complete Luddite and when I last met him he was still developing his own photos in a dark room at home, so he may be in for a shock if he’s still continuing such antics.

Having said that, you don’t need to have a foul-tempered local to screw up your photos when on holiday. My friends do that for me. I can’t stand going on holiday with people who don’t know how to take a half-decent photo. My last holidays were spent in the Pyrenees amid awesome alpine scenery, quaint old cottages and tumbling waterfalls. But did my friend get any of this into the photos? Of course not. Why include an imposing 3,000-metre mountain in the background at the top when you can get the sight of railings and rubbish bins into the frame at the bottom? Why bother with a 2,000foot ravine on my left when there’s an elderly lady’s back on the right, along with her plastic shopping bags? This particular friend’s apparent theory on photography seems to be: “Get Gary in the middle.” She slyly ‘forgot’ to bring her own camera, too, so she obviously appears in more photos than me, and without the appearance of railings, other people and plastic bags to boot. Of course, these days it’s obviously getting more and more difficult to take a quaint photo without modern life intruding anyhow. One may want to take a photo of an old Valencia traditional barraca house with its typical pointed gables, but of course you have to crane your

neck so as not to include the TV aerials, surrounding cars or the kids playing games on their mobile phones. Then again, some people seem to want some cheesy proof that they were there. I remember going to Río Mundo by a stunning waterfall in the Cazorla National Park, where I saw people queuing up…to take their photos beside a sign saying ‘Waterfall’ in front of a rock wall. The fact that they could have set up such a photo in their garage at home didn’t seem to bother them. The sign seemed to be proof enough, without bothering to include in the photo the thundering, imposing waterfall cascading beside them. Taking photos on holiday is indeed a little like getting a trophy to take back home and say, “I was here”. For this very reason, I personally think you should get yourself in the photo if possible, as there will always be better photographs than one’s own to buy on postcards, for example, or simply see them on the Internet. Of course, if you’re visiting a city such as London or New York you can always ask the police for the CCTV footage and hence piece together a video of your entire stay. This would be without sound (as far as I’m aware), although

as Jackie Mason once said, “Anyone who speaks good English here must be a foreigner” anyhow. Depending on the district, you can take photos to make out you visited Bombay, Hong Kong or Italy, too. The fact is that globalization has brought with it a creeping uniformity in big cities, which are becoming more and more similar to one another. A walk around the souvenir shops of Paris, Rome, London, Barcelona and, yes, Valencia, soon reveals that such trinkets are exactly the same with a different city’s name emblazoned on them. Even the more hippy shops seem to be completely in touch via Internet, churning out the same handcrafted products. The great landmarks themselves, after being seen a thousand times on the Internet before you see them in real life, cease to have the same impact. This is why, when I visit a city unknown to me, what I like most is to discover the bars, the markets, the people and, if possible, the countryside. I find this to be a far more educational and entertaining experience and perhaps the only way of still finding differences in an ever more homogeneous world. So if you’re visiting Valencia for a few days, whilst the imposing City of Arts and Sciences is certainly worth seeing,

my advice would be to wander around the Ruzafa district and have a drink or a bite to eat. I used to live in Barcelona after the Olympics, when the city had a real bohemian feel to it that has sadly since disappeared, and I have to say that this area of Valencia reminds me of the Barcelona of the ‘90s with its mixture of young foreign artists in bohemian haunts and yuppie wine bars, sitting happily side by side. The leafy Cánovas area is like a smaller, slightly cheaper version of Barcelona’s Eixample district, too, but without the latter’s bustle and pretentiousness while retaining some first-class restaurants for dinner. Between the river and Ruzafa you’ll find Valencia’s city centre and the famed Carmen district; again, reminiscent for me of Barcelona in the good ol’ days and the place to be for a night out. There’s also the great Central Market here, where you can see and taste what the locals eat. Curiously, in a newspaper survey, the barrio of Valencia that got the most votes by its residents as feeling happy with where they live was Benimaclet. This area is really a small town that got swallowed by its big brother’s expansion. It appears on no tourist itineraries but its bars are well worth visiting at night for the atmosphere created by the local mixture of students from the nearby campuses and the working class regulars. The plazas around Avenida Blasco Ibáñez are also trendy and well-priced due to

their student population, if a little more up-market and leafy. Incidentally, don’t be surprised if you hear people say they’re going for a stroll, a game of football, or even to park their car in the river. Said river has no water since the floods of ’57, which led the authorities to divert it south of the city. It is now a park, where you can see the locals “in their sauce” as we say here, rollerblading, jogging, having a siesta, playing the bongos, chatting heartily at the same volume as the bongos, or just chilling. You can even see open-air cinema here in summer, the kids can scramble over a giant Gulliver lying pinned to the ground, while others play baseball, American football (heavy sigh from author) or do athletics. There are also one or two bars away from the noise of the city all around, and often a fair of some sort, too. For me, this is what I visit a city to see. And if I have to use Photoshop to erase the rubbish trucks, McDonald’s signs, supermarket trolleys and postcard stands that my friends insist in photographing alongside me, at least I’ll have some memories other than spending my time trying to take photos that look like postcards. CLUBLAND Another summer has come to an end in Valencia and what a summer it has been. The city goes from strength to strength with its array of night & day parties (never forget your sunglasses on a weekend), terraces and ice- cold mojitos to keep cool whilst dancing away. The city is going back to its roots as a 24-hour party city. Since my last article we have hosted the European Formula 1, held two internationally renowned festivals; FIB and Arenal Sound, enjoyed creativity and VIP parties for Fashion Week and Design Week, whilst fitting beach time where we can. It’s a hard life for us hardcore few, DJing and hosting these events. Now, with the weather cooling, the many dormant winter clubs are re-opening their doors with new parties and events and I hope to give you a good mix of what is available in October. I am going to start from the heart and introduce you to Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111), now in its third year and it has started September with a bang. If you are into your underground house music with a top sound system, then this is the place to go with an array of international DJs such as Marshall Jefferson, Funk D’Void and Daniel Kyo. Good nights to catch this month will be the 21st with Lalupa Records and Daniel Kyo on the 22nd. (facebook.com/Miniclubvalencia) As we are in the Blasco Ibáñez area, I will let you know of some alternative suggestions if Miniclub is not for you. Right next door to Miniclub you will find Murray Club (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111), which always has a queue outside for people wanting an alternative music night till very late. Music is a mixture of indie, rock, pop and electronica with a live karaoke rock band every Wednesday to back you singing! (www.myspace.com/ murrayclub33rpm) Now directly across the road you will find Rumbo 144 (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 144). They host packed parties there from Wednesday to Saturday night. Expect a lot of commercial dance music and very international student crowd partying till the early hours. (www.rumbo144.com) La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2) re-opened their doors in September with their great venue

near the port that hosts a mix of live bands and indie and electronica in the main room and a further two rooms with a mix of underground house music and rock/pop. For September, we even saw 2ManyDJs live, packing out the venue and we hope to see more high-profile artists passing through their doors this year. For October, they welcome Crystal Fighters from the UK on the 14th and the Oven Club there presents one of Spain’s hottest producers at the minute, Nacho Marco, for his Loudeast label night on the 15th. (www.la3club.com) If you are looking for nightclub towards the centre of town and you are in the Ruzafa area then I highly recommend you visit Excuse Me! (C/ dels Tomasos, 14).This club has pushed their style of night to great success, making it original and attracting even international attention from such DJs as Prins Thomas. Find upstairs a mix of rock, pop indie, soul, groove and even ‘60s music, and downstairs an original sound of nu, Italo and space disco. My recommendations will be the 11th for Residents Night and also the 28th for Orxata Sound System after party for something different. (facebook.com/excuseme.valenciados). Also in Ruzafa, run by the good people of Groovelives, is the brand new XtraLrge Playground (Gran Vía Germanías, 21), Valencia’s latest multi-use club, with three distinctive rooms and more than 600 metres of floor to share. See Facebook Xtra Lrge XL. If you are near Plaza España, then Rich (C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55) is located towards the main train station. This converted theatre is elegant and one of my favourite, visually appealing nightclubs. They welcome a new Friday night party called ‘Random’ that aims to offer something different and look to bring some great DJs and producers to Valencia. They opened their night last month with one part of the group Hot Chip, Al Doyle, to a packed crowed. Resident DJs including local talent and good friend DJ Fono will offer a night of dirty beats to keep you on the dance floor. If you want something more commercial at Rich, go on a Saturday for a night of commercial R&B, hip-hop and dance music. (facebook.com/randomvalencia) The Carmen is the old town and is the trusted source for an option full of bars, restaurant and clubs with heaving streets

every weekend. To find the best venues to meet international crowds and funky beats, get to Fox Congo (C/ Caballeros, 35) and Johnny Maracas (C/ Caballeros, 39) or Bolsería (C/ Moro Zeit, 12). Finish the night at Social Club 47 (C/ Quart, 47) or Music Box (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 16) for a mix of rock, pop, indie and dance music. The latter is near the Torres de Quart, so easy to find. Open till 7 a.m.! Red VLC (Av. Cortes Valencianas, 58) is one of the newer bar/clubs in Valencia located next to the Hotel Sorolla in the north of the city in the trendy Zona Palacio de Congresos. This venue has become a popular venue due to its luxurious décor and popular dance music on the weekends and also a great venue to visit during the day. Do not be put off by its location not being so close to everything, as you will not want to leave once you get there with their high quality of soulful and funky house from top DJs such as Robin Orlando, Carlos Jean, Dom Scott and the Sassol Crew. (www.redvlc.com ) Finally, to finish off my list of places to visit in the city I have to mention the big guns of the city. Las Ánimas offers a wide array of venues in the city and offer deals within each location. They recently acquired a new nightclub called Superclub 95 (C/ San Vicente, 95) located within walking distance to Rich. Find three rooms of mixed music with a fantastic main room and LED show. Mya is located in the City of Arts and Science, which is a fantastic location to see at night. Beautiful club with fantastic sound system and expect great funky house with beautiful dancers on the stages around the dance floor. (www. grupolasanimas.com) Well, I hope that this give a broad outlook what is going on in Valencia. Once we get further into winter we will see these venues get better and better. Feel free to Twitter me any questions or comments and I’ll get right back to you. See you on the dance floor

WOMAN

Au contraire to the rest of the world, as I most often am, I am taking October, and not September like everybody else, as my Back to School month. For some bizarre reason I made a complete pancake of my 2011 holiday request when I put it through in December 2010, and found myself stuck at my desk for the entire duration of June, July and August. When I could have been enjoying a long fortnight basking in the Summer sun along with all my friends, had I thought about it properly back at Christmas prior, I was instead dragging myself to The Bank every day, in 40º heat and a suit and heels. Fun. However, every cloud has a silver lining, the glass is half full and all that jazz, and luck would have it that I happened to coincide with my jet-setting bosom buddy Lolita for my ‘Summer Holiday’ – a week off at the end of September. She works very strange hours and in very strange places, and has free time at some of the oddest moments of the year, and so was as delighted as I was to find someone to holiday it up with somewhere ‘in Europe’, as the Americans say. I sat at my iMac for days on end, scouring the Interwebs for interesting destinations, desperate as we were to get out of Spain, disconnect from Valencia and be forced to try our hands at a foreign language (or at least point at a menu for a foreign waiter). It was fairly late notice, so my number one destination, Croatia, the new luxe hotspot on the Med, was by that time way off-budget, and we ended up getting cheap-ish Ryanair flights to northwest

Sicily for a week of sun, swimming and spaghetti. The fact that Lolita had just got back from Milan and had had quite enough of the Italians for one month was beside the point, and we lounged by a pool in the delightful fishing town of Marsala, sharing the hotel with hundreds of middle-aged military. We thought at first they might be on a stag do, then realized they were far too well-behaved at 11:00 pm on a Friday night to be doing anything else but working. Luckily they kept to themselves and we had free range of the hotel for most of our stay. We took a one-carriage train to Trapani (the driver actually leant out the window to us to call out the train’s destination, very Dolce Vita) and watched some hunky international sailors at the Extreme Sailing Series, sampled some mulberry granita in the ever-so-pretty port (N.B.: Granita is basically granizado. With bits in.). We took tacky touristy photos on church steps, in Roman gateways and on seafronts. By boats. We ate enough carbs to give Dr. Atkin a coronary and slept enough carb-overload-induced naps to never need a siesta again. It was gorgeous, and just what we needed. Plus we got to catch up on all the gossip as we girls do so enjoy, and put the world to rights over copious glasses of wine (and not just Marsala – that is one strong alcoholic beverage!). Once back in Valencia, I had a few days left over to sort out some paperwork, do some more sleeping, see some friends and catch the ever-amazing 2ManyDJs at

La3 – that club is really upping their game this season, kicking off with the genius Belgian brothers who absolutely packed out the floor and had all the little Valencia hipsters with their non-prescription glasses and ankle boots with shorts forming a queue right round the block to get in, the presale tickets having sold out four days before. October is a great month to party, as the summer terraces close their doors and the nightclubs open theirs, with new management, new DJs, new flyers and well, same old crowd. The clever people down at Rich Club have got their finger on the hipster button now that Piccadilly is closed, and have started a new indie / electro night called the Random Fraternity on Fridays, but you can still glam it up with the chic elite and get down to some house music on Saturdays as per last year. It’s a great spot and very central, which is always a plus! The old Indiana site, Superclub 95, is back, too, under the Ánimas umbrella, and the girls and I checked it out last Saturday. Apart from an unfortunate incident with a silly drunk girl who'd forgotten to put clothes on over her underwear – I mean, not to sound like an old biddy, but really? A corset and hot pants in 2011? – who elbowed me in the chest ‘by mistake’, we had a fabulous night. Now that Mango and not only Zara but the whole Inditex group is offering online sales, one has no excuse to look in the slightest bit shabby ever again. Have it delivered to your home or pick it up from your store of choice for no extra charge! I already have my eye on some lush leopard print booties (Mango), an amazing pair of gold – yes, gold! – skinny jeans (Zara), a sparkly lurex jumper (Stradivarius), some ‘70s flared jeans (Zara again) ... And while I'm on the subject, another dangerous (for your credit card) newbie to the Interwebs is Amazon.es. In case you're wondering what to get me for Christmas this year, I'd suggest Mad Men, Grey's Anatomy, Fringe, Big Bang Theory... box sets of the lot, please! Also the new Lenny Kravitz album, an iPod dock, a new Blackberry cover... I'm sorry, I think it’s my Back to School Syndrome. I'm feeling nine years old again, next I'll be wanting new pencils, shiny new shoes, a new backpack, new folders and some New Kids on the Block stickers to adorn them with... A VALENCIA STORY

No Ham, No Life... by D. Blackwell

“Negligee,” George corrected in a French accent, without opening his eyes, then went back to sleep. “Yeah, she was wearin’ one of them. And she says to me, ‘Fix me teeth and I’ll fix you.’”

PART 2 The following Friday rolled around. The three of them met up at the Bodegueta, the only place still willing to put up with their drunken antics. It was also one of the few bars where you could close the shutters and play with the gypsies until daybreak. They decided to go at it and drink until the place closed, then head out and take anyone else that was up for it. The New Zealander, Morgan, happened to be in that night causing the usual fuss. His Spanish was elementary, but his personality beat his language skills, and allowed him to make it evident how belligerently he viewed other mortals. George could never quite put his finger on what it was that made him such appealing company to the bodega crowd. Granted, he was larger than life, as they say, and his drunken antics and mood swings made for an interesting night, but George was just a little too cultured to buy into it. He seemed so uncouth. Morgan, though no one ever knew it, was particularly fond of George and secretly desired to be like him some day and settle into a life of delicate spectacles, as opposed to the more likely scenario of playing out the rest of his life like a Viking barbarian. His wild red hair, always flailing out of control, often retained the pearls of spit that he spewed forth incessantly in his rants against everything and everyone. He drank like a fish and, despite his aggressive posturing, never hurt a fly. Javi, more than anyone, adored Morgan. And, in keeping with his love of jazz, he

also had a deep affection for the English language, mainly fostered by a total ignorance of it. Morgan and Javi seemed to meet about halfway in their inability to master the other’s tongue and the ability to match each other drink for drink. So, Morgan was enlisted to join them on the drive down to Javi’s hometown. None of them seemed to care that they were all too drunk to drive, or that the car they had borrowed had no suspension. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Morgan, downing the dregs of a bottle of vodka he had got on tab from Isabel, the owner. Isabel smiled fondly as she opened the shutter to let them out, the stars in the sky blurred to all. They were like her little drunk children, off on a school trip. Morgan kissed her on the cheek a little too fondly (she was twice his age) and they were off. The suspension-less car promised a bumpy journey. Javi drove and Morgan insisted on riding shotgun, claiming to be the world’s best navigator, before promptly falling into a noisy sleep. His snoring blended with the hum of the highway and soon sent George off to slumber land, too. That left just Javi and Miguel to chew the fat. Friends for years, they were happy listening to each other’s stories over and over again without admitting to having heard them before. To kill time Javi began: “You know when I was an apprentice dentist, the first job they gave me, know where it was? The red light district. Yep, that’s right. I turned up and there was this old whore, face pretty past it but everything else in the right place, y’know. She was in this black slip, what d’ya call them…erm, neggelejers…”

Javi slapped the steering wheel and turned round, flashing Miguel his gold filling. “Ooh-eeh, boy! That’s the stuff right there. Sixteen years old, first ever job and I got laid no more than walk through the door. That’s what it’s all about, my friend. My formative training was all done on hookers and I never earned a penny but, man, I raked up some good experience right there, I tell ya.” Miguel couldn’t really match Javi’s racy stories. Nothing really interested Miguel except flamenco. He spent all his free time studying the masters and learning the classic lyrics. He was one of the most well-informed singers in the city, but for some reason no one liked to play with him. Maybe it was partly due to the fact that he wasn’t much fun to be around. His singing tone was a little old fashioned and nasal, and he never really let loose. The people getting the gigs were technically much worse than him, and less knowledgeable, but they knew how to rip it up and put on a good show. Miguel didn’t really care for all those fireworks because he sincerely believed he was better than all of them and one day history, or God, would prove him right. After Javi got bored of recounting his adventures, Miguel started talking about how he’d managed to get his hands on some rare recordings of ‘Terremoto.’ It wasn’t of any interest to Javi but it was nice to listen to something as the scenery rolled by. And anyway, the radio was fucked.
