INTERVIEW WITH JIMMY GLASS OWNER CHEVI MARTÍNEZ Jimmy Glass (C/Baja, 28, Zona Barrio del Carmen) is Valencia’s best known jazz club but don’t expect to stroll in to find people in double-breasted suits and kipper ties, drinking whisky sours to a backdrop of Miles Davis or Billie Holiday. Apart from the stage and the photos of jazz performers on the walls (mostly taken by the owner himself), it has the look and feel of a typical, atmospheric, old Barrio del Carmen late night bar. The music you’ll hear is always some form of jazz and you might get the odd Blue Note classic but priority is always given to new approaches to the music and younger contemporary artists. Jimmy Glass is not about using jazz as some kind of instantly recognizable label or as décor to add a bit of cool and pleasant background music; it is about the musicians who are pushing the boundaries of the genre. There are regular (almost weekly) Tuesday night concerts and slightly less regular solo and duo slots on Friday nights. The concerts are open to anyone who’s interested and are attended by a mixed bag of tourists, people passing through and a hardcore of local jazz fans who try to attend most of the shows. As music writer Don Snowden explains, “it’s the kind of place where you can get exposed to jazz and figure out for yourself

if you like it or not. It's not like you're going to church or sitting in some concert hall with your hands folded in your lap, listening to culture.” However, don’t think, as is often the Valencia way, that any performance in a bar is there merely to add colour to your own conversation. If you chat through the quieter solos, you’ll be hushed down. Jimmy Glass is a venue where local jazz musicians regularly hang out and owner Chevi Martínez has gone out of his way to ensure that the club is becoming increasingly well-known as a place to play for young jazz players around Europe and further afield, particularly among the scene of younger musicians developing in Brooklyn, New York. The venue has showcased a vast array of internationally acclaimed artists across the jazz spectrum. This month’s Jimmy Glass International Festival is a great indication of the club’s growing reputation. The festival celebrating the club’s 20th anniversary is typically ambitious in scope and a must for anyone interested in finding out what’s going on in the contemporary world of jazz as it spotlights a number of leading European and American bandleaders and featured performers.

Alto saxophonist Perico Sambeat, the most widely known Valencia-based artist on the contemporary jazz scene, debuts his new international quintet on the 15th while his younger compatriot Javier Vercher’s trio on the 11th includes African-born guitarist Lionel Loueke, a recent Herbie Hancock sideman with one Blue Note CD under his own name. The quintet co-led by pianist Aruán Ortiz and bassist Mike Janisch on the 2nd features Greg Osby, an innovative alto saxophonist with a 25-year career as performer, composer and mentor to many younger musicians, while Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug returns to Jimmy Glass on the 8th with the influential tenor saxophonist Mark Turner in his quartet. Drummer Antonio Sánchez’s Migration group has an impressive line-up of acclaimed saxophonist David Binney, up-and-coming pianist John Escreet and bassist Matt Brewer while Argentinean pianist Emilio Solla’s intriguing Tango Jazz Insiders quartet includes Chris Cheek, a saxophonist well-known in jazz circles for his contributions to over 60 albums by major artists. How did Jimmy Glass get started? I have always felt part of the Barrio del Carmen. I have friends here from the ‘70s Article © 2011 24/7Valencia

Chevi Martínez

We all know the image of the smoky jazz club. How has the smoking ban affected the atmosphere? I can’t see any effect at all. People come to hear the music and have a drink with a few friends. They can smoke in the street if they want. Personally speaking, if they changed the law back, I would maintain the smoking ban in this club. What about the jazz scene here in Valencia?

and ‘80s and we used to go to some great places round here like La Torna, La Jungla or La Tardor. After studying photography, I set up this place with a friend of mine. We started off as just another place to go in a neighbourhood full of bohemians. We didn’t really have any particular theme. In 1994 I became the sole owner, and since then we’ve been dedicated exclusively to jazz. The look of the club has never changed much but I find with jazz it’s not the look that matters too much. In other places, people have spent a lot of money creating ostentatious re-imaginings of a 1920s speakeasy and it hasn’t always worked out. It’s not the container, it’s the content. Why a jazz bar? The simple answer is that I love jazz. This is somewhere that’s different from the rest of the bars in the Carmen. I believe that over the years it has become a place of reference in the city of Valencia as a place that stands out. Tell us about your love of jazz? Jazz is a living thing. It is in a constant state of evolution. You can’t just focus on the classics as many people do, although they are there as great works and deserve respect. Jazz is an art form that you have to reinvestigate continuously to find new groups, new trends. It is a type of music that you can never tire of, there is always David Rhead is a teacher at Glenburn School of English

something new there for you to discover. This isn’t a time of revolutions, musically speaking, but it is a time of investigation and there are a lot of very good musicians out there working on it every day. Who comes to your club? We are in the Carmen, a focal point of Valencia nightlife, so we get all kinds of people at weekends. It’s different during the week, our clientele is a little more homogeneous, more regular. There are concerts here every Tuesday, and you get many people who are nearly always present at these concerts, who come week after week. For people like us, a real jazz fan will get to 20 to 25 concerts a year. In a funny kind of way, we are educational. We are offering people new ways to appreciate this music. Making them aware of new groups, new styles and people seem to enjoy that. Tell us about the musicians who play here? Jimmy Glass has put Valencia on the international jazz circuit. We get groups from all branches of the music, established musicians who play here and in the most famous clubs in New York or London and groups that are making a start in the world of jazz. There are groups that first played here as unknowns and have become acclaimed all over the world. They all seem to enjoy playing

There are some great musicians in Valencia. Perico Sambeat and Jesús Santandreu are perfect examples of that, and we have always supported them from day one. The pianist Albert Sanz is another, and you should try and get to hear the trumpet player Voro García or the trombonist Toni Belenguer. What’s your take on the jazz festival organised each year at the Palau de la Música? It is an important event and they go for quality. The problem is they always go for established stars who have earned their respect but usually don’t have anything new to offer. I would like to see a section of the festival dedicated to new, younger talent. What’s different about the Jimmy Glass festival? Well, we’ll be focusing on current trends in jazz, contemporary and the avant-garde. There won’t be any of the already acclaimed old guard. We want to introduce people to what’s cooking in the current world of jazz. That’s why, amongst many others, we have people like Will Vinson, who’s been a revelation and will be playing the opening concert with people of the calibre of the internationally acclaimed guitarist Mike Moreno. If you’re a jazz fan in Valencia, you should be checking out the festival.

David Rhead and José Marín with special thanks to Don Snowden

HEALTH

Personal growth with terapiados in Valencia We are a team of four counsellors and psychotherapists working in Valencia. Our approach has a humanistic focus based on relational and gestalt therapy. We consider that the basis of our therapeutic work is support and awareness. Counselling for us has to do with becoming more aware of our feelings, emotions, needs, relationships, how we deal with our environment and how this can affect us. We try to give the specific support that each person needs so changes can be made. In terapiados we offer individual therapy and group activities, such as personal growth workshops and therapy groups, in our offices in Valencia and La Cañada. These activities go on throughout the year and we also have monthly events. In December we have programmed the workshop Emotions: A Compass for Life that will be held in our clinic. Our work and activities are both in Spanish and English. Two of our members speak English. Jeffrey was born in the U.S. and David has lived and studied in the U.S. Both of them have experienced the difficulties of living in a foreign country. Being away from home can be challenging and fun but at times having to deal with people who have a different culture, language and customs can be a source of stress. Emotions: A Compass for Life What are emotions? What are they for? Should we control them? Should we let them go? How do they affect our relationship with others? A good knowledge of our own emotions and becoming aware of what they are telling us is a fundamental support for living a full life. Emotions are the guide that will show us what our actual needs are. Recognizing our emotions and needs is the first step towards knowing ourselves better and knowing what we really want, both from our environment and from the people around us. In this 8-hour workshop we will work on: The emotional process: When does it begin? What is it for? Are there ‘good’ or ‘bad’ emotions? Differences between emotions and feelings Differences between needs and satisfiers Five basic emotions Your emotional style Work methodology will include explanations of the basic theory concepts and exercises that will help assimilate concepts and connect them with each participantʼs own experience. FOOD

Rock Out With Your Crock Out Crock pot time is here again! Oh, the joys of the cool winter months; slow cooked, melt-in-mouth meat, long roasted joints, root vegetables... oh, whoops, getting carried away again! Honestly though, isn’t there some kind of pure bliss in winter when you can load up a crock pot in the morning and return home in the evening to a heartwarming slow braise that normally would’ve taken you hours of slaving over a hot stove? Naturally, you can do crock pot cooking in the oven or the stove top, particularly well if you have one of the French enamel cast iron numbers, it’s really just a matter of long, slow heat in a covered pot. The only difference is a slow cooker, or crock pot, will cook at an even lower temperature for twice the amount of time, which sounds like the wrong way to go, but we’re all generally out of the house for eight hours at work, so it really does work perfectly. And, slightly safer leaving the crock pot on all day rather than the oven (I think), and at least it will always give you a convenient excuse to race home early from a blind date. You can pretty much slow braise, or crock pot, anything. Give up on recipes and following things down to the letter... anything cooked that long will taste good. Another beauty of the crock pot is that you can just throw everything in raw and walk away, if you’re doing it in a large saucepan (the meal, I mean), you will need to soften onions first and brown off the meat, then throw everything in and leave it to cook slowly. I’ll give you directions of both ways in the recipe. The purists, and probably the crock pot cookbook, will tell you to brown things off first, too, but seriously, isn’t that why you’ve bought one, to save time? Especially now that I’m a mama, I have absolutely no time to think of meals, let along much to prepare them. So, in a nutshell, choose your meat, add some vegetables and then top it all up with just enough stock or tinned tomatoes, add some herbs and walk away. Add some cornflour mixed into a small amount of water to the pot at the end to thicken the sauce if need be. Sound simple? It is.

Slow Braised Beef and Mushrooms • 1kg (more or less) of diced beef (or lamb, or chops on the bone) • 2 brown onions • 3 stalks celery • 3 carrots • 3 anchovies • 4 cloves of garlic, or more • 8 good-sized mushrooms, 12 or so if just button size (omit if using lamb) • 2 bay leaves • 2 sprigs fresh thyme, rosemary • 1 small tube of tomato purée • 2 cans diced tomatoes or a jar of tomato passatta

large cast iron pot as well. Brown the meat off first, in batches, so the juices don’t stew the meat instead of browning it. Add a little salt and pepper whilst doing this. Set the meat aside and sauté the onions off in the same pan, they will help to deglaze it of the meat brownings, working their delicious flavours into the dish. Once onions are nice and soft and translucent, add the garlic and anchovies and then empty half a glass of wine in there (red or white, they’re actually both good). Allow the wine to almost evaporate before adding the rest of the vegetables. Once the veg is soft, stir in the tomato purée and allow to cook for a minute or two before adding the meat and the tomatoes. Add a little water if needed to just cover everything and set it on a very low stove top with the lid on, or, preferably, use a saucepan that has no bits on it that can melt and put the whole thing with the lid into a very low oven, say 120ºC, for around 3 – 4 hours. Enjoy! I’m off to take my bubba for a walk to the square for a hot chocolate, try the ones in Plaza del la Reina if you haven’t already – totally amazing! Christmas next month – can you believe it??

Dice all the onions, celery and carrots and finely chop the garlic. Obviously, if you like garlic or have more or less of the other ingredients, go for it... 6 cloves of garlic and 2 sticks of celery will be good, too. Cut the mushrooms in quarters and tear the bay leaves in half.

Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

Put all of this into the crock pot with the anchovies (they will just dissolve into gorgeous background flavour) and add a small amount of water and give it a good stir. Set the temperature to Low and leave it for about 8 hours. You can also set it to High and cook it for about 4 – 5 hours. When you’re nearly ready to eat, you can add some cornflour to thicken the sauce if necessary. Cornflour must be mixed into a small glass of water first and then added to gently boiling sauce. It will need to simmer for a few minutes to work its magic. You may need to add at least a tablespoon or two of cornflour to thicken this amount of sauce. Make a luxurious mash with loads of butter, milk and salt to serve it with and some crusty bread. Mandatory glass of red, or bottle, goes without saying. For those of you without a wonderful slow cooker (no, I haven’t got shares, I just haven’t got time), this will work well in a Article and Photo © 2011 24/7Valencia

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

copenhagen It's been a week of coincidences. All of us at my home are absolutely hooked on Forbrydelsen, the original Danish version of ‘The Killing’, a 20-part, subtitled thriller which held the UK in thrall earlier this year. We are up to episode seven and are all finding excuses to stay in to watch it. On Thursday, copenhagen for dinner. Not Copenhagen, in Denmark, but copenhagen, a very stylish, recently opened vegetarian restaurant and bar in Ruzafa. There is simplicity of style in the Danish name and beautiful typography throughout the restaurant, from the logo to the menus and the graphics. At copenhagen, we were soon to discover, it is a completely different story. The menu is extensive, and contains not just vegetarian, but vegan (and gluten-free) dishes, too. The food can best be described as fusion with a menu that contains Thai, Japanese and Mexican food. Most of the dishes on offer are designed to share, which is, of course, just what we did. We chatted to Olga, one of the owners, about the restaurant and its philosophy – both in design terms and in terms of the kitchen and produce. The restaurant first opened its doors in March, it is a delightful space… all subdued hints of heritage colours, natural wood and atmospheric lighting. There's a long bleached wood bar to your right as you walk in, backed by a blackboard showing the logo and a sketch, in white, of a low landscape with a small building and a tree. Beyond the bar on the left is a long bench with a line of tables and chairs of different designs, at the rear of the room are more tables and chairs against a black backdrop with windows to the kitchen.

Daily from Ruzafa Market, copenhagen gets its supplies fresh, and its three chefs (one Japanese and two from Valencia) whip up the menú del día (10€, three courses and bread) from what is great that day. As I write this, today's menu features an oven baked potato salad or celery soup to start, an enchilada or noodles with a salsa of bamboo and mushrooms for the main course and, for pudding, vanilla ice cream with rum-steeped currants or apple in wine with a cinnamon cream. Olga recommended a marvellous wine, Mitus Reserva (Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo), a really delicious biodynamic wine from the Toro/Zamora region and a bargain at 16€ a bottle – their wines are mostly Spanish and carefully selected. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality and range from 12€ with the top three around 30€. As usual we asked Olga to choose our meal. She chose the Guacamole con nachos de yucca frita (homemade yucca chips) and Croquetas de boletus y avellanas tostadas (hazelnut and boletus mushroom croquets) and Enrollado de milhojas de berenjena (carpaccio of aubergine wrapped around scamorza cheese, sun-dried tomato & tapenade) for our first course. All three were great but the guacamole was standout delicious, coarsely chopped avocado with added chopped red onion and sun-dried tomato. I shall be copying this the next time I make guacamole! Next came the main course, a Pasta Thai con salsa de coco (Thai red curry with noodles, peanuts and a coconut sauce), beautiful to look at and a good flavour (I would have gladly eaten it more spicy! But this is Spain and they don't like chilli too much!). Our postre was a triumph according to P, who loves white chocolate and Parma violets. A Mousse de chocolate blanco con frambuesa natural, confitura de violetas y helado (white chocolate mousse with white chocolate, fresh

raspberries, violet jam and ice cream) and it was every bit as good to eat as it looked! We had been chatting to Olga about their bar and cocktail menu, which is heavily weighted towards gin & tonic. As we came to the end of our meal she offered us a digestif, we accepted and then she said, “Maybe you should try one of our gins?” How could we refuse! P ended up having a Gin Xoriguer, bayas de enebro y corteza de lima and me, Gin Bulldog, regaliz y corteza de limón. P’s was made with the most famous of gins from Mahón (the Menorcans love their gin, said to be a hangover from the 18th century when the island was a British possession for a short while) with added juniper berries and lime. Mine had pieces of liquorice and lemon, the flavour growing as the liquorice slowly melted. Both were lovely – and very strong, thank goodness I left the car at home. Dining at copenhagen was a real treat. Vegetarian or not, I highly recommend a visit to this restaurant, but book first – it is, deservedly, extremely busy.

EL DESVÁN DEL CAFÉ What a jewel of a place. This is real bohemia in the arty barrio of Ruzafa. El Desván del Café is cosy, original and relaxing. Members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been enjoying chilling out here since it first opened in 2009... and yet it seems like it has been around a lot longer. Run by the Venezuelan-born hosts Luis and Douglas, the former speaks English and Spanish and the latter has a good grasp of German, English, Spanish and some Japanese, too! Born of Spanish parents, Luis spent 15 years in the U.S.A. and also studied art and design. The hostsʼ cosmopolitan backgrounds and open-minded approach is reflected in the relaxing vibe that you will find at El Desván del Café. It has a very distinctive interior that has to be seen in person to truly appreciate. With a bike and chairs on the wall (!), you are surrounded by paintings, lamps and curiosities. It is bohemian in the truest sense of the word, different and original Article & inset photos © 2011 24/7Valencia

and unique. Luis adds that, “Here you will find a non-aggressive and relaxed, tranquil, protective atmosphere if you fancy a good wine, an enriching conversation with tea or coffee or a tasty piece of cake to unwind with.” The clientele is an interesting mix of groups, couples and individuals who like to enjoy the good things in life. This includes coffees like cappuccino and carajillo (coffee with brandy), special coffees from New York, London and Paris and, of course, their own ‘El Desván’, an espresso with Cointreau, chocolate and whipped cream. Their impressive choice of teas include mint, orange and cinnamon, Earl Grey, English breakfast, Darjeeling, jasmine and fruit teas like peach, exotic fruits and orange too. For health lovers, there are organic and fair trade teas and infusions including like rooibos, cranberries and elderflower. The last time we went, we opted for their speciality of lemon, ginger & ginseng, which was as uplifting as

described and left a good feeling for the rest of the evening. Sweet-lovers can enjoy croissants and magdalenas (madeleines), as well as chocolate, apple and carrot cakes. They also have salads and fruit juices like tomato and pineapple. They also serve beers including Amstel, Alhambra Reserva and Murphy’s, too. Next time we go, we're going to check out their Victorian Lemonade! VALENCIA FOOTBALL

The Dwarfs are Growing for Emery What more can you ask of Valencia? They lie fourth in the table, and are beginning to put a bit of a gap between themselves and fifth place and so lie well in their pursuit of a Champions League berth, even though the season has only just begun. More worryingly, Valencia have failed to capitalise on this season’s Champions League football. The draw away against Genk and the point saved at home against Chelsea meant that the Chés had to get a result away against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Valencia went one - nil up after 24 minutes through Jonas and had numerous chances to put the game to bed. It would not have been scandalous to presume that Valencia could have been five - nil up at half-time, such was their domination over the Germans.

We will never know what Unai Emery said to his players at the break, nor more importantly what the Leverkusen coach threatened his players with, because the second half was completely different. Whereas Valencia had over-elaborated everything in the first 45 minutes, the Germans displayed a ruthless efficiency (uncanny) and they were leading by two goals to one within 10 minutes. Emery made changes, some would say too little too late, but to no avail, and Valencia had yet again thrown away a glorious chance to win a football match.

home to give Valencia a vital three points. This means that VCF need to win against Genk and, in all probability, need a point away to Chelsea to progress to the last sixteen. If they fail to do so, UEFA (Europa League) football beckons, maybe we’ll see a Stoke City-Valencia humdinger.

They had to now win at Mestalla against the Germans to have any chance of progressing to the next round, this seemed to be a foregone conclusion as a slip from the young German goalie gifted Valencia a goal after just under 11 seconds. The home team then sat back and invited the Germans to come at them, which they did, grabbing an equaliser before half-time. The writing seemed to be on the wall for the Chés and the crowd began to voice its opinion. Then, yet again, Soldado came to the rescue and 10 minutes later, Adil ‘Rambo’ Rami headed

The trip to Mallorca seemed to be a profitable one until the referee from Malaga decided to invent a penalty for the home team in the 93rd minute. Rami had put Valencia ahead but the match had not been put to bed and the Chés were to pay the price for poor football and poor tactics. Many can argue that the referee’s decision conditioned the result but Valencia were incapable yet again of defending a lead, and serious questions need to be asked about Emery’s tactical decisions.

In the league, Valencia's progress has been stop-start, with the only constant being unentertaining football which would have even the most ardent VCF fan searching for the remote to change channels.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

Valencia were lucky to win one point in their next home game against Athletic Bilbao, the Basques had a perfectly good goal ruled out and a decent penalty shot waved away whilst VCF had Soldado to thank yet again for a last-minute equaliser. Handkerchiefs were unveiled and whistles aimed at the seemingly ever-under-fire manager Emery. The match was marked by a serious injury to Sergio Canales who twisted his knee and in all probability will be out for about six months. A midweek trip away to Zaragoza offered a chance for redemption for VCF, an opportunity they seemed somewhat reluctant to seize. This was probably one of the worst games you could ever wish to see and my heart truly goes out to the maños, because if we think we have it bad in Valencia, let me assure you they have it worse. Apparently the Zaragoza team have lost the map to the opposition’s penalty area and are having a lot of trouble finding it (nearly as much as my beloved Wigan Athletic), yet Valencia still found it hard to take the full three points. It was only in the 82nd minute that little Jordi Alba popped up to poke home the winner that Valencia fans could relax, if they were not already asleep. After the game Unai made a groundbreaking statement, “No, it wasn’t a brilliant victory”, wiping the sleep from his eyes, but it was still three points. During the week the ‘peñas’ of fan clubs of VCF issued a press statement condemning the style of football and tactics employed by Emery. His reply was to change the line-up against rivals Getafe, including the young Frenchman Feghouli. Many were bemused by the inclusion of Feghouli, but he replied by netting a brace and injuring a few Getafe players in the process. Aduriz’s first goal of the season meant that Valencia ran out comfortable 3-1 victors and Emery had answered his critics for the moment.

which surprisingly is not best viewed by the club, and Tino Costa has incurred the wrath of Emery by not giving his all in training. The Argentinean would do well to respect the club who pay his wages and remember where he was playing football only a few years ago.

¡Qué rápido!

Meanwhile, the club seems to be headed, financially, in a positive direction. Talk abounds that Mestalla will be sold and that the money will pay off debts and allow construction of the new stadium to recommence. Rumour also exists that VCF have reached an agreement to sign Andrés Guardado, the permed Mexican, from Deportivo for the forthcoming season for the grand price of nothing, yet another freebie. Champions League

November will reveal if Valencia can carry on to the next stages of the Champions League or if they fall by the wayside at the first hurdle. In the league, the local derby against high-flying Levante should be a highly emotional contest whilst the visit to Mestalla of Real Madrid with Mou and his media circus will be one to watch. Off the pitch, Emery seems to be also having a few problems with players. First to rebel was Ricardo Costa, who has made several disparaging remarks about his teammates, Photos Heino / Article © 24/7 Valencia 2011

COMMENT

Airspeak For those of you who have just got off the plane, I hope your stay in Valencia will be long enough to recover. Here’s a glossary to guide you on your trip back.

Coin: Object used to get a trolley. No other use known in airport departure lounge, where only banknotes and credit cards are accepted.

Air traffic controller: Unseen, omnipotent being with the fate of all in their hands, yet whose motives are unknown. Presence particularly noted (or rather, missing) at the summer solstice, Christmas and Easter. (Not to be confused with God – see below).

Kilometre: Distance between original gate and the real one announced two minutes before boarding. Life Vest: Pre-flight entertainment and optional extra on low-cost airlines, available at a minimum extra cost. Departure Lounge: Designated location for informing travellers that their flight is delayed or cancelled. Duty Free: Overpriced goods more expensive than outside Departure Lounge. Emergency Exit: location on plane.

Desirable

seat

Alcohol: Popular beverage found in Duty Free shops.

Flight Attendant: Politically correct name for air host(ess) / steward(ess) found blocking aisle on plane and waking passengers to sell electronic nail clippers, etc.

Bag: Container measuring less than 54cm x 35.5cm x 20.5cm and weighing under 10 kg if you do not want your flight fare to double.

God: Third party referred to in travel insurance policy small print whose acts are responsible for all mishaps and cancellations.

Check-in: Departure point for your luggage to be sent to its destination (not to be confused with passenger destination).

Hand Luggage: Oversize, baggy coat with deep pockets worn in all weathers, containing 20 kg of luggage that does not fit in Bag.

Aisle: Space on aircraft occupied by trolleys selling goods otherwise only seen on TV ads at 3.00 a.m.

Information: Top secret data held by airport and airline staff. Jet-Lag: Condition caused by time difference between estimated time of take-off and actual time of take-off.

Metal: Ubiquitous material found in the entire developed world that makes passport control machines beep. Particularly amusing for people with pacemakers, pins in body, tooth braces, etc. Nose-Dive: Sleeping position causing severe neck pain. Not to be confused with horrifyingly rapid descent of aircraft, though after-effects may be similar. Overbooking: system.

Common

reservation

Passport: Identification seemingly only carried by UK citizens in Europe today. Queue: Place where hundreds of people stand for hours in front of gate even before gate has opened, as if the plane is going to take off sooner this way. Duh. Reclining Seat: Favourite on-board child’s game.

COMMENT

Samsonite: Ubiquitous bag designed to withstand falling anvils, collisions with fork-lift trucks and Liverpool airport baggage handlers. Toilet: Most comfortable and soughtafter seat on plane. Scene of lovemaking and cigarette smoking.

Undercarriage: Wheels of plane and humorous name given to passengers’ baggy-arse due to wearing of four pairs of underwear so as not to overload Bag. Vomit Bag: paper bag placed on adjacent, empty seat if you wish it to remain vacant.

Water: Potentially devastating terrorist threat, not allowed through passport control. Bottles must be emptied (drunk), then re-filled with Eau d’Armitage Shanks in the Departure Lounge. X-Ray Machine: Device for destroying hard drives, photographic material etc. Yellow: Notoriously lurid colour used by a certain airline to keep passengers awake. Pilots must shield their eyes on boarding to avoid temporary in-flight blindness. Zanzibar: (See Check-In). El Gazza © 24/7 Valencia 2011

VALENCIA WORLD

Giuseppe Grezzi Even though it is a regional capital and the third largest city of Spain, it is relatively small in size. This allows us cyclists to travel around the city from one end to the other very easily and comfortably.

Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. I was born in a small town south of Naples in southern Italy. Since I was a child I have been fortunate enough to travel and participate in student exchange programs with other European countries. These experiences left their mark and have perhaps determined why I have always wanted to continue travelling abroad and continue discovering other realities, to know other cities and countries and meet people who enrich me, too. When I turned 18, I took the opportunity to go to university and I went to live in a city big enough to open up further horizons for me. After finishing my studies, I went to live for a while in New York, to study English and get work experience, too. It was a crucial opportunity to come in contact with a cosmopolitan society which, because of the contrasts, gave me the chance to know many different cultural, human and political realities. A two-week bike trip around Cuba was one of my richest experiences in travelling, because the natural beauty of the landscape and the people there blended together to welcome you with open arms. An unforgettable experience! I have been living in Valencia for over 11 years. I am now very integrated in the life of this city and practically a Valencian to the point where I’ve become deeply involved in the social and political field. I was a candidate of Compromís (a regional coalition of independent political parties with a commitment to the environment) for the Ayuntamiento (City Council) in the recent municipal elections. How do you find Valencia as a place to live? Valencia is a very comfortable city to live in.

Thankfully, Valencia also has an exceptional climate. It is also very flat, with a relatively small metropolitan area and the short distances between the city and the surrounding towns and villages enables us to move around between them. There are spaces like the wonderful gardenpark in the old Turia riverbed, which connects the barrios. It is a green lung which Valencians enjoy very much. Also, Valencia is fortunate to have some beautiful places of exceptional natural beauty like L’Albufera and El Saler, the Serra Calderona natural park and the Parque Fluvial Turia (Turia River natural park). They are all just a few kilometres from the city and so easy to visit. However, I have the feeling that there is still plenty of work to be done in making Valencia a green, sustainable city. Green spaces are still scarce, there are many cars while public transport is very limited and the widespread use of cycling in the city is not being seriously promoted. In the area of culture, there has been a recent surge of interesting developments in terms of art galleries, underground theatre, the growing number of music groups playing in Valencia clubs and bars, along with an increase of very promising local bands and musicians. This is despite the fact that public funding has been reduced and a number of theatres and concert halls have closed down. There is a lot of choice in terms of clubbing and eating out but perhaps it will require an effort to make it more professional and appealing. Describe your work. Over the years, I have developed a strong ecological conscience, which has had a profound effect on me. I have a commitment to repair the damage inflicted on the world by a civilisation that bases everything on economic

growth, very much tied to consumption of fossil fuels like petrol, without taking into account the limits of the planet. This is why I got involved in Green issues and collectives like Acció pel Clima and Valencia en Bici (an advocacy group promoting cycling), which got the Critical Masa (a monthly bike rally) going. From that, I made the leap to being an active member of Los Verdes (The Greens), playing a very active role in municipal politics, writing articles in the press, organising debates and talks, and leading social demonstrations. Since the elections last May, when I was a candidate for Compromís per València, I have been working as a staff adviser for the Compromís group of the City Council of Valencia. We have a lot of responsibilities, the principal ones being to monitor the work of the government and to make suggestions so that the government works well in order to satisfy the demands and needs of the people. We also believe that one of the most important things is to make sure that the opinion of the people is heard and the government takes that into account more and more. Any plans for the future? I have made a commitment to put a lot of work into making Valencia a modern city in all aspects. I hope that it can be the Green capital of Europe in a few years, like Hamburg, Stockholm and Vitoria have been, because of the enormous potential that this city surrounded by natural parks has. I also hope it will be a city of culture on the level of Spanish cities like Barcelona, Madrid or San Sebastian and the great European capital cities. A city that invests in public services and health, the city of children as Francesco Tonucci would say, a healthy and safe city. It is possible to achieve this and much easier than it appears to be because, beyond the political debate aimed at winning elections, the results would be beneficial for each and every one of us who lives in Valencia. That is to say that, right now and I believe for good, I have stopped my natural tendency to be a globetrotter because Valencia is my home. WOMAN

I am struck with a severe case of hair envy, people. I have had a lovely, healthy bob for a long time now, and I was happily growing it out into an Olivia Palermoinspired shoulder-length crop when a pair of new hair straighteners frazzled the life and soul out of the ends. After a swift visit to my hairdresser to get it sorted, immediately, I am now back where I started a year ago. And now everywhere I look, all I see are long, luscious locks, fishtail braids, and poker straight manes and I am one green-eyed little monster. I feel like a five-year-old, frantically tugging at my ends to try and coax them into growing, just like a My Little Pony I had in my youth – you’d pull its shiny purple tail and it was instant length, then click its leg a few times and start all over again. Luckily my hair grows extremely fast and it's not like I have an Amelie or Edie Sedgwick look going on, it’s still past my ears, but my dream of hair cascading down my back to my bottom in two years is fast fading. You will be pleased to know I received a full refund for my straighteners, though in my haste to get it sorted out I have probably missed out on my chances of receiving any kind of compensation – I've destroyed all the evidence! – but I will keep you posted on my bob progress. Shoulder length by Christmas, living the dream! I usually get my panic on around this time of year as I get more and more paranoid that my ears are going to freeze off in the winter months. Obviously this fear is founded on absolutely nothing at all, I've never worn a woolly hat, and

of the wearable. I have bought one pair of ankle boots (an absolute steal in Zara for 19,99€) and a basic Tee. And that is it. My bank manager will be pleased. If I was a high- flying exec, I would happily fill my wardrobe with all the beautiful suits and blouses on offer, but let’s face it, in the current economy there can't be that many high-flying executives about anyway, and I doubt they’d shop where I do. Plus, one can get a suit any time of year, so who am I kidding?

even less so in the mild City of Valencia, but that's how I roll, I like to keep my mind preoccupied with this kind of abstract paranoia. I own a lot of earrings, too, so what would I do with them? I am starting to worry this year, however, if it will actually get cold at all. Just this last weekend I ventured out in tights, wondering if it wasn't a bit too soon (after all, I was wearing shorts just the day before), but was then rendered speechless (a rare occurrence) when I saw a group of boys get out of a car looking like a picture out of a proper ski-wear catalogue. Tans (obviously, it’s practically still summer), three-day-old stubble, skis and all. Well, maybe not skis, but they were definitely all wearing thick woolly jumpers with the kind of winter motif Bridget Jones’ mum would have been mighty proud of. Okay, I get it, I love to shop, too, and I can see that when you buy new clothes you want to wear them. Straight. Away. But this was taking it a little too far. Maybe there was a 5-for-1 offer on the shopping channel they just couldn't resist, but if I had had a say in the matter, I would definitely have advised them to stow said jumpers away until at least December. I have to say that I have been practising extreme self-control in the shopping department, even though new collections are in on every single street corner. But it’s not just me, all my girlfriends are showing similar restraint but it’s not self-induced, oh no, it’s because everything on the shelves is ugly. Yes, I said it, ugly. I am a fashion junkie, but this season my habit has dwindled considerably due to the lack

I was hoping not to have to do so, but I am going to have to climb over the furniture in my storage unit and dig out the ANITAWINTER boxes to see if there's anything I can't recycle in there. And if not, then I will have to dress exactly as I did last year, only slightly shabbier, and with shorter hair. I still can't believe flared jeans have come back in, my collection of skinnies must stretch to way over ten, and I love every single pair. Flared jeans, in my experience, mostly only look good on girls built like gazelles who can wear high heels all day, but on the rest of us actual human beings, they make us look like exchange students from the early ‘90s. In case, reader, you are man, or indeed you are not fashion savvy, this is NOT a look one aims to emulate when opening the wardrobe of a morning and asking oneself, “What shall I wear today? Oh yes, pass me the baby backpack and the platforms – they'll go nicely with my new flares.” Crazy Spice would be proud. In other news, I never did sign up to that spinning class, so I'll never achieve the gazelle-esque thighs to go with the flared jeans anyway. My spinning partner fell up an escalator and split her knee open, which is a shame. She's okay now, nothing broken and just a few stitches, but it doesn't help with the fitness regime at all. I need some motivation and a partner, otherwise I'm likely to find any excuse to stay at home and eat Pringles in front of Sex and the City marathons. Which, with the stormy weather predicted for November, sounds way preferable to anything else anyway!

A VALENCIA STORY

No Ham, No Life... by D. Blackwell

PART 3 They arrived about an hour before dawn. The village was way out in the country and the early morning air was noticeably colder than in the city. Morgan belched and dragged his fingers through his beard while trying to work out where he was and why. “It’s colder than a witch’s tit,” he spat. “Yeah,” said Javi, in English, without understanding a word Morgan had said. “C’mon lads, this is the stuff right here,” Javi motioned. They had stopped a little way out of the entrance of the village at a fountain. Javi pushed the iron nozzle on the lion’s head and took his fill of the crystalline water, chilled by the early morning air. They all drank deeply. Morgan gargled. “Pure Formixe water, that is. Not like the shit you get in the city, boys!” beamed Javi. “C’mon, one last stretch and we’re nearly there.” Javi’s house was in the middle of the village, overlooking the town plaza which measured about 300 metres. They were all noticeably impressed by the town house’s grandeur. To enter they went up a wide, spiralling staircase, the stone steps worn down in the middle from generations of Javi’s ancestors. The interior too was in keeping with the antique feel. An upright piano rested against the wall of the main salon under a painting of one of Javi’s distant relatives in a military uniform. They were all noticeably impressed and tempted to check it out at length, but Javi proposed they got some shut-eye, as dawn was about to set and they needed to get some rest in before the festivities began.

The house had trapped the cold air like a refrigerator, and it seemed about 10 times colder inside than out. It didn’t bode well for George who was a delicate creature. Javi saw him huddled in on himself and took him to the private room and piled so many blankets into his arms that all that was left visible was the top of his balding pate. A muffled ‘thanks’ was just audible before George shuffled off to bed. Morgan was already asleep in his clothes on the sofa, oblivious to the cold. Javi looked at him as he led Miguel to the room they were to share. “These fucking Vikings. Used to it, aren’t they!” And they slept. ******** Scarcely had the first drops of light sprinkled their gaze over the town than the bells in the main square began to ring. A farmer, standing on the hill that hugged the horizon, looked down on the town with an extra special glee. The dew in the evergreen trees refracted the first rays of light and made everything in his old eyes cloudy. He gazed on the newly lit fires in the distant plaza. His goat nibbled at the frosted ground, its bell tinkling mournfully. He breathed in deeply. Yes, today was the day of the town festival alright, he could smell it. Morgan was gripped by a terrible nausea and wondered whether his head would implode. “Whose idea was it to ring bells inside my fucking brain?” he shouted and dragged one of the sofa cushions from

under him to cover his pounding head, which he nuzzled into the folds of the armrest. He finally gave up any attempt at hibernating when he heard the kettle whistle. That noise meant hot drinks so he stood up, his hairy belly exposed between his T-shirt and jeans, and strode into the kitchen to find Javi, George and Miguel sat at the table. Javi was accepting the maté gourd from George. “Ah, that’s the stuff,” he enthused, drinking the bitter herb through the metal straw. He sucked the dregs then took the thermos and refilled the pumpkin container until it foamed a little at the edge and passed it to Morgan. “MA-TÉ,” he accentuated as if talking to a monkey. “Yeah, I know what fucking maté is, you arsehole,” he said in almost perfect Spanish for once. One of George’s friends shared a house with Morgan, so he was well versed in Argentine customs and curse words. Javi was delighted to hear the insult in Morgan’s mouth. Morgan drank the maté, sucking loudly, then passed it to Javi. Javi refilled and passed it directly to George, skipping Miguel who had no taste for it. Miguel was eager to get out and had little interest in putting his lips round a communal straw and drinking something that tasted like tobacco. “You look fucking rough, mate,” Morgan said to Miguel. “How much did you drink last night?” Javi answered on his behalf. “Miguel doesn’t drink.” The truth is, he always looked that bad. It was just the first time Morgan had seen him during the day. “C’mon guys, let’s check the place out already,” said Miguel, eager to see the village. TO BE CONTINUED...
