CLUB EXCUSE ME? COMING UP TO THEIR 5TH YEAR IN VALENCIA! Excuse Me? celebrated its fourth anniversary on November 25, 2011. Situated in the up-and-coming, cool and hip barrio of Ruzafa, this club has become an absolute reference of the Valencia clubbing scene. Excuse Me? operates in an old disco from the ‘70s era with a period décor to match. The name of the club used to be Sider, which you will still see at the entrance along with Excuse Me? The club is divided onto two floors. Upstairs you will find more guitar-orientated sounds like fuzz-rock, garage, rock ’n’ roll and indie pop with resident DJs Sr Patilla & Miss Taboo at the controls, and disc jockeys from classic Valencia clubs including Calypso, Pinball, Swan and Magazine. This floor has also featured internationally renowned DJs from the pop and rock ‘n’ roll world like Frank Popp, Jeff Automatic and the Horrors.

The main floor downstairs has more electronic sounds. Over the last four years, DJs of the calibre of Prins Thomas, In Flagranti, Steve Kotey (Chicken Lips), Disckjokke, Todd Terje, Cosmo Vitelli, Tim Sweeney, Mirror People, Pete Herbert and Hard Ton have been at the decks. Whilst Space Disco has been a constant in the Excuse Me? mix, there have also been fiestas of 8-bits, Drum & Bass, ‘80s nights, hiphop and new rave. This year the club has added monthly parties like ‘Club de Perras’ by resident DJ Vladimir Dynamo, playing music with a wild, daring spirit that break the rules with electronica and indie, mash ups, edits and electrorock. ‘Beatamax’, with Sais and Gonzo in Vegas at the decks, goes for a colder electronic sound, more industrial with clear influences of Belgian New Beat and European EBM. Be sure to check out ‘DiskoBiskuits’, conceived by H4L 9000, where the musical world revolves around Nu Disco, edits, new wave, and dashes of proto-house and Detroit techno. 24/7 Valencia has spent many a late night at Excuse Me? and it is a good, mixed crowd. Remember that Friday nights has the two floors and Saturday nights has the upstairs floor. All night long, baby!

You can check out more information of their past, present and future via the www.excusemeclub.org web page that features videos, photos and music, too. Excuse Me? is open on Fridays and Saturday nights from 1.00h – 7.30h as well as the nights before holidays… like New Year’s Eve! If you want to join the Excuse Me? Club, you can do so on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ excusemeclub.org and on Twitter at @excusemeclub. Excuse Me? C/ dels Tomasos, 14 (next to Mercado de Ruzafa) Zona Ruzafa Valencia

CHRISTMAS MADNESS Christmas mash-ups, scatological crib scenes and mountains of almond-based confectionery…. Christmas in Spain is a time for peace on Earth, goodwill to all men, fondly remembering relatives who’ve passed away and trying as much as possible to avoid the living ones. Just like the rest of us when Christmas comes around, the Spanish like to have their Belgian chocolate-covered Italian panettone cake and eat it. Not content with holding on fiercely to all their own homegrown traditions, they enthusiastically celebrate those they can successfully incorporate from any other country as well. Let’s take, for example, Valencia’s contribution to Christmas, turrón. For years, two towns in the region had the Christmas sweet market sewn up. Alicante made ‘El Blando’, a soft dry almondy sweet moulded into a bar, while from Xixona came ‘El Duro’, a hard dry almondy sweet moulded into

a bar. The third option in this grand array of Christmas delights was polvorones, a powdery-dry almond sweet moulded into an oval shape. Polvorones, by the way, are only eaten at one time of the year. The reason for this will become immediately obvious if you ever try one. When your entire Christmas hamper has long been finished off, that box of polvorones (and there always is one) will still remain. At some point people realised that, without surrendering long-held traditions, perhaps a bit of variety was needed. The solution was to take what at any other time would simply be called “a bar of chocolate”, and rename it turrón de chocolate just for the Christmas period. Nowadays bars of chocolate turrón easily outnumber the traditional stuff on any supermarket shelf. They come in any number of not-so-traditional Spanish flavours, such as kiwi fruit, Irish coffee and rum & raisin.

Flavours from all over the world were imported in amongst the teeth-threatening almondy stuff without anyone really noticing. You may be surprised to hear that, despite being made from more organic and wholly natural materials, Spanish sweets haven’t really gone the other way. As yet, there is no great export market for polvorones. Traditionally every Spanish home is decorated at this time of the year with the dutifully sedate Belén, a nativity scene with models of Mary, Joseph, the baby and perhaps some of the other characters from the Christmas story. Belén building is one Spanish construction industry that is definitely not in desperate decline. Belenes are getting bigger and more spectacular by the year. What started off as adding a lump of moss-covered bark to add a bit of ‘atmosphere’ has got completely out of hand. Now you can have an entire Little Town of Bethlehem on your dining room table complete with moving parts, villagers and Article © 2011/12 24/7Valencia

the whole tradition. Just like George Martin was the fifth Beatle, Father Christmas is a bit like the fourth King. It’s just that he comes a week earlier, conveyed by reindeer instead of camels.

their houses, a lake and a fully functioning Roman-era sawmill. There’ll be a whole farmyard of animals including ducks and for some reason swans and somewhere in the scene of course, the ‘caganer’, the figure of a man having a dump which is ‘traditional’ in Catalonian crib scenes and has now become popular all over Spain. These days he is not the only person relieving himself on that first Christmas night, a popular addition in recent years is the figure of the ‘meón’, or peeing man. These days in Spain, where anything deemed Christmassy will do, even the Belén has to fight for space with the baublestrewn northern European Christmas tree, the Mexican poinsettia plant, holly branches and the plastic Father Christmas climbing up the balcony. In some cases, traditions have merged. Thus you get mutant crib scenes of cattle and shepherds from sunny Palestine nestling among tinsel, fairy lights and snow. Conversely you might also find a chocolatecoated, squatting Catalan having a crap behind the Christmas tree. In Spain, presents are brought by the Three Kings on January 6. You’d think that would be enough – but not for the festively frenzied Spanish. In the last few decades or so, Father Christmas has appeared on the scene. Even he is an international mash-up. With his white beard and red suit he looks like the American version, but for some reason he bears the French name, Papa Noel. Far from having to fight it out with the Kings for his status in the hearts of Spanish children, he’s been neatly incorporated into Main & Baby Jesus Photos Kaiko © 2011/12 24/7Valencia

The big winners, of course, are the kids. Not only do they get loads of toys at Epiphany, they also get showered with goodies on Christmas Day. It surely won’t be long before the kids get the triple whammy. Why not get St. Nicholas, who brings prezzies for children in the Low Countries (Netherlands & Belgium) on December 6 in on the act? The 6th is already a national holiday (it’s the Día de la Constitución) and according to Dutch tradition, St Nicholas actually comes over from Spain and, of course, he also has a beard. Just like they do with their politicians, the Spanish love a gift-giver with a bit of face fuzz. Those other bearded heroes, the three Kings themselves, Balthazar, Melchior and Gasper (as they were named about 1,000 years after they were supposed to have existed) arrive in Spanish towns as part of a great cavalcade, throwing thousands of sweets to the kids lining the streets on the night of January 5. The Valencia parade starts at the port where the Kings arrive by boat and finishes up at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the Kings are raised up on a fireman’s ladder and enter the town hall through the balcony. In fact, they will use the balcony as a way into every house in the city this same night, a neat and much more practical twist on the chimney thing you get in northern Europe. Both the nights of January 5 and 6 are celebrated with the eating of Roscón de Reyes, a rounded, sweet cake with a paper crown on top and a bean and a present hidden inside. The tradition originates (you guessed it) not in Spain, but in France, where it has now fallen out of use. The lucky family member who gets the slice with the present gets to wear the crown for the whole day; the Spanish are second only to the British when it comes to a passion for eating sweet cakes

and drinking vast quantities of alcohol while wearing silly hats. If you get the bean, you pay for next year’s róscon. New Year’s Eve usually begins with a family meal, typically shellfish. People often follow the imported Italian tradition of wearing red underwear. When midnight approaches, everyone gathers around the TV and prepares to eat one grape for each of the twelve chimes of the Puerta del Sol clock, while drinking a glass of cava with a gold ring inside. The hospital admission rates for people choking on grape pips and expensive jewellery at 12.15 a.m. on a New Year’s Day have never been published. After that, for many people it’s penguin suits and party frocks and a macro-fiesta in some disco or sala de fiestas, with more silly hats, paper Hawaiian garlands and party blowers until the early hours of the following morning. Lastly we can’t forget a truly Spanish tradition, the buying of Christmas lottery tickets which is an obligation here. The Christmas period officially starts on December 22, when everyone gathers round the radio or telly to listen to the poor, tone-deaf children of the San Ildefonso School in Madrid singing out the winning numbers. No Spanish person can say no when offered a ticket, or will take no for an answer when trying to sell you one. This is purely to avoid being that sad person who always appears on TV after the lottery draw; the only one in the block who didn’t buy a share in the winning ticket. They are usually filmed desperately claiming they are really happy for their neighbours and that, “Health is more important than money” and that’s why December 22, when the lottery is drawn, is jokingly called ‘El Día de la Salud’. Wherever you are during the festive season, make sure you enjoy it as enthusiastically as the Spanish do. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

VALENCIA MUSIC

THE TOASTERS who were cut off now have the chance to see great bands. One of the finest alternative festivals is now Mighty Sounds in the Czech Republic. The only place I haven't been so far is Australia, but we are looking to fix that in 2012. It is very difficult to reach the number of years you have spent in the music business. Any tips for young bands?

THE TOASTERS

The Toasters were started by Englishman Robert ‘Bucket’ Hingley and fellow Forbidden Planet comic book store co-workers in New York in 1981. Despite line-up changes, the Toasters have been playing ska for 30 years and have been literally all over the world. In the ‘80s, Hingley set up his own record label, Moon Ska Records, which has sold over 1, 500,000 ska records by different artists. Robert has been living in Valencia, Spain with his family for the last 8 years. You have been to lots of countries, even to countries where anyone would doubt that there are any ska fans there. Is there any place where you have not been? I'm doing this interview from Bogotá, Colombia, with our next stops in Chile, Argentina and Brazil, so funny you should ask that. You'd be surprised at how many ska fans are out there, it's a style that has many adherents who are extremely loyal to the music and that's why the genre still exists, despite the fact that it doesn't grab much of the limelight these days. I think the strangest place we ever played was in Irkutsk, Russia – yes, there are even fans there. Some of the best emerging markets are in South America and the eastern European countries, where people

Right now I'd have to say don't quit your day job (if you have one). I have never seen such a toxic environment for start-up bands and it's a Catch-22 situation where, in order to get anywhere, you have to be well known. These days it's more important to know what you want and be ready to go through hell to get there. I'd say the most important thing, apart from having an excellent business plan, is to write good tunes, and in a way the reversion to the more ‘60s-style, singlesdriven business model is bringing back more quality. Being in a niche market always helps but there's no substitution for melody and harmony. You are not going to get anywhere by regurgitating rhythms that other bands played better in the ‘60s. Lots of bands want to play out before they are ready and that's always a mistake. Recently, the Selecter and Bad Manners were playing in Benidorm. What can we expect from the Toasters and this 30th Anniversary World Tour as the American 2-Tone band? We want to go out and play as many new places as possible, with new tours planned for China and Southeast Asia, there's a big scene in Jakarta, for example. Recording new tunes is on the back burner – the next release will be a 7-inch single on vinyl – although we are gradually working new material into the live sets, people get mad if we don't play the standards. What you can expect is to see a good band on stage at El Loco in Valencia, and many more concerts over the next couple of years. Why did you come to Valencia? Apart from the food and weather, what do you like about it? Mostly by accident. The family came on holiday here in 2002. At that time we were actively looking to downsize and change our lifestyle drastically after the 9/11 debacle in New York – a whole new light was shed on working 60 hours a week and existence in the rat race.

Originally we weren't considering Spain, more so the UK, however we liked Valencia. Even though the city is urbane and has much to offer culturally (keep the fireworks… despite what Brussels says!), it's the antithesis of NYC, everybody has their foot off the accelerator and we liked that. Apart from the obvious reasons like the climate and the cuisine, we liked the fact that the city had a strong cultural identity – Fallas is a fantastic holiday – and it was compact and walkable. We like the fact that Spanish culture revolves much more around the family. That’s one of the main reasons we moved, so that we could spend more time together as we were spending more time commuting than we spent with the kids – that was really missing in NYC. We love the Mercado Central and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Living right next door to L'Eliana we are outside of the city, but we can still be there in 15 minutes and our kids have access to the metro. We can be at the beach in 30 minutes or in the mountains in the other direction. Most of my neighbours are oranges. In short, Valencia is everything that New York isn't and nothing that New York is. That seemed appropriate enough for the drastic lifestyle change. But it would be nice if Delta would oblige by making that direct flight to JFK a year-round thing! What do you like doing when you are in town? The Mercado Central is our Mecca, although the other neighbourhood markets are also fun. Going to the old city, tapas bars, specialty stores like the Asian and Indian markets and now the Polish shop. Kanda Books! Going to the Portland Ale House 'brew' pub. All you can eat sushi. The great thing about the city is that there are lots of hole-in-the-wall places that you can find if you look and that's why it’s a fun place to walk around to see what you can find, especially if you are a café-culture vulture. The Toasters play El Loco, C/ Erudito Orellana, 12 (Zona Juan Llorens) on December 9. See www.toasters.org for more details

FOOD

Talking Turkey and Eating Cake Yikes, it is that time of year again and I have so much to tell you this December that I might spare you my usual rants and ramblings and get on with it. Right, let’s talk turkey first. Some key points; know its weight, make your stock the day before and DON’T stuff it. Cook absolutely according to weight, turkeys take a long time, but not necessarily that long. A 3-4 kilo bird will only take 2-2.5 hours, add a further 20 minutes cooking time per kilo extra. But remember that a 3-4 kilo bird will feed at least 10; it really depends on how much leftovers you want, and for how long! I think the most important thing is to keep it simple, I know that sounds like a cop out, but truly, do keep it simple. There are so many ways to fuss over a turkey, and by all means try them, but my money is on the simple, roasted bird, it wins the flavour stakes every time. And on Christmas Day, when you’ve got a million other things to do, perhaps simple will work on more than one level. Once you add gravy, stuffing, ham, langoustines, greens, and everything else to the mix on Christmas Day, keeping to a simple roasted turkey will be sublime. Please do make sure your bird is at room temperature for at least an hour before it goes into the oven, this is muy importante! Do tie it up, the legs at least anyway, put a quarter of an orange and/or a lemon, and half an onion inside it to keep it moist, season it really well with flaky sea salt and black pepper and roast it in a hot oven at 200-210ºC. If you’re roasting the bird on a rack in an oven tray, it’s a great idea to fill the tray with water and make sure it doesn’t dry out during the cooking process, this will create a steamy atmosphere in the oven and really help your bird. A hot oven will keep the breast moist while the legs cook and not dry it out. People used to favour a lower cooking temp but the breast dries out while you wait for the legs to cook through. You can carefully separate the skin from the breast with your fingers and push seasoned butter up under there, but you don’t have to if you don’t have time. I think covering it in

Christmas Fruit Cake • 500 gm currants and raisins • 120 mls whisky or dessert wine – your preference • Juice and zest of 1 orange and 1 lemon • 1 teaspoon 4 spice powder • 350 gm softened butter • 350 gm light brown sugar • 5 eggs at room temp • 250 gm prunes • 200 gm dried apricots • 150 gm dried figs • 150 gm dried peel – lemon and orange • 50 gm dried cranberries • 50 gm dried pineapple • 100 gm dried cherries • 50 gm dried peaches • 100 gm ground almonds • 150 gm hazelnuts roughly chopped • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 350 gm plain flour

overlapping slices of jámon is a good idea, particularly as they make nice crispy extras when it’s done. Don’t stuff the cavity, it won’t make enough for everyone at Christmas dinner and it will make the bird take too long to cook, drying it out. Stuffing needs to be made separately in a large cake tin and you’ll find plenty of recipes on the Internet. Make your stock the day before with the neck and giblets that come with the bird, sauté them off in a pan and then add lots of finely chopped onion, carrots and celery and cook on a gentle simmer for a couple of hours. This can be strained and thickened the next day to make the gravy. Now for the cake... good Christmas cake is hard to beat, some folk hate it, and I can’t understand why; whisky-soaked, densely moist fruitcake, served with a ripe Stilton or other strong blue cheese and plenty of port is my singularly favourite edible thing of the year! I think originally this may have been

my favourite Nigel Slater’s recipe, but it’s been written in shorthand in my recipe book for so long, it could’ve been my Nan’s. Preferably the day before, if not months before, soak the currants and raisins in the whisky or muscat and stir in the 4 spice powder. The day before, add the zest and juice of the citrus and stir well to combine. Set aside. In a rather large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy and add each egg one at a time, mixing well between each. The mix may look a bit curdled at the end of the five eggs, don’t worry. Chop the rest of your dried fruits up and stir into the butter mixture, you don’t have to stick exactly to my list, any kind of mixture is good as long as there are plenty of prunes, figs and apricots. Slowly stir in the ground almonds and hazelnuts and then add the soaked currant mix including all the juice. Mix the baking powder into the flour and fold this into the mixture. Fully grease and line a large round cake tin, a deep 24 cm tin is good. Bake for around 3 hours, the first hour at about 160ºC and then turn it down to 140ºC, lower the temp by 15-20ºC if using a fan forced oven. A skewer should come out covered in moist crumbs, as opposed to a battery goo, when it’s cooked. Leave it to cool completely in the tin. I like very much to sprinkle the cake with whisky, dessert wine, or Muscat when it first comes out, just enough to dampen the entire surface of the cake. When the cake is cooled, completely wrap it up tightly in two layers of cling film and then in foil. Ideally, you’ve made your cake well and truly before Christmas, and it’s a good idea to unwrap the cake carefully each week (if well in advance of Christmas), and daily if you’ve not many days to go, to liberally sprinkle it with whisky again. The more moist your cake the better the result, no one wants a Gobi! Please remember to cut your Christmas cake using a serrated bread knife, otherwise it will crumble like Rome. And por favor, don’t forget the port! Wishing you all a very merry Christmas indeed, and an absolutely wonderful new year. Felices fiestas y buen provecho! RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

L’HAMADRIADA We were just getting our act together the other night to go out to L'Hamadriada for dinner when a spectacular thunderstorm hit our barrio. The temperature dropped and there were loud rumbles circling the house. The thunder rolled for several minutes, will it or won't it come closer? Finally, very suddenly, there were the accompanying bright white flashes of lightning and the heavens opened. The rain came down harder than I ever remember…doesn't it always? We arrived at L'Hamadriada slightly wetfooted but otherwise dry to find people spilling out on to the pavement, drinks in hand, chatting animatedly. We made our way into the restaurant and were shown to our table. We were greeted a few moments later by the co-owner Sylvia, a friendly host who speaks very good English, too. She bought us a bottle of Icono, a very drinkable Valencia D.O. wine from La Font de la Figuera, by which time a group of 25 customers had begun to seat themselves at the long table in this very attractive room. We also noticed another large party in the room at the back. We were led to an intimate little table by the bar at the front of the restaurant. Our host joined us for a glass of red wine as we chatted with her about the restaurant and she explained the name is Spanish and L'Hamadriada is named after a wood nymph in mythology. Sylvia is a very charming and friendly host who, within minutes, makes you feel you have known her all your life. And so the food began to arrive.

The chef and co-owner Fernando chose our menu. I love foie and we started with a generous portion accompanied by some delicious caramelised apple, served with little toasts for 12€ in total. Next came Patatas bravas, I was surprised at this but these were very much tastier than the norm, crispy mouthfuls of potatoes with the skins on, with a delicious slightly picante (spicy) paprika tomato sauce and a garlic mayonnaise, excellent value at 5€. Our third dish (all were to share) was Chipirones salteados con piñones, habitas, ajos tienos y soja (baby squid griddled with small broad beans, pine nuts and spring onions in soy sauce). The chipirones griddled in soy sauce made for a wonderful flavour here, slightly crispy on the edge and the accompaniment of the beans and nuts was excellent and again great value at only 8€. Our main course was Carrilleras en jugo al vino tinto, a lovely stewed piece of pork cheek in a rich red wine jus – succulent and full of flavour for 12.50€. To finish this excellent meal we had two desserts, a lovely light tiramisu and a chocolate brownie full of dried fruits, topped with a hot chocolate sauce – both just 5€. We will be returning to L'Hamadriada, their lunch menu is a bargain and weekend lunch sounds great fun as it is regularly full of extended Spanish families enjoying paella or whatever rice dish Fernando is serving on a particular day. They are also happy to serve you a drink and a montadito.

The restaurant is in a little cul-de-sac just off of Plaza Vicente Iborra and C/ Pintor Zariñena, very close to the Home youth hostel there. Once you've found it, I guarantee you'll keep going back. SHOPPING

BLUE MOON Rock ’n’ Roll. This shop is named after the Rodgers & Hart song ‘Blue Moon’ made famous by Elvis Presley and Billie Holiday among others. The couple who run it, Laurent Lanouzière and Sophie Delfolie, are a warm and well-travelled couple from Paris, France but this original shop wouldn’t be out of place in Paris, Texas! In terms of rock ’n’ roll credibility, Blue Moon has owners who know the score. Laurent is good friends with Jason Pierce from Spiritualized, who produced his first band’s debut EP and Laurent has also toured all over the United States and Europe for almost a decade as a musician with the legendary Tav Falco’s Panther Burns. This cult psychobilly ‘art damage’ figure is a favourite of Bobby Gillespie, which might explain why he got Laurent and Sophie VIP tickets for the Primal Scream gig at Benicàssim this summer at FIB 11 ...where we all hung out backstage before witnessing a great set of ‘Screamadelica’ live…. The choice of clothes and shoes is for him and for her. The style and feel is cool retro and top quality with articles of clothing you will not find anywhere in Valencia. shop that has been put together with love, knowledge and understanding. Women's shoes feature brands like Irregular Choice and Poetic Licence from London and Leg Avenue from the U.S.A. while the men's shoes include Pepe Milán from Spain. Enjoy the distinctive, superior calidad of the men's T-shirts from the legendary ‘La Marca del Diablo’ of Los Angeles. This marca was set up by a Mexican designer and uses plenty of skulls and religious figures mixed with rocker imagery. Men's shirts include bowling shirts from St. Louis in the U.S.A.

wonderful vintage guitars for sale. Indeed, a certain rock ’n’ roller on the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team sometimes pops by for a little guitar jam session and an interesting chat...so we know this shop very well and are always made to feel welcome. This cat and chick have got it together, they are cool and they are kind, which is the best combination. The store is just off Plaza Dr. Collado and a two-minute walk from Mercado Central and La Lonja, so it’s easy to find. Owl BLUE MOON

There are also some wonderful ‘40s – ’50s style women's dresses/skirts/tops and shirts from ‘Collectif UK’ of London as well as erotic women's lingerie and stockings from Leg Avenue in the U.S.A.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL Homage to Valencia CF legend Mario Kempes

FUTBOL ES ASÍ... In the run up to the Christmas break, Valencia are perfectly placed third in the overall league standings and first in the league of mortals, taking away the galácticos of Real Madrid and Barcelona. They are four points ahead of fourth placed Levante, who seem to be running out of steam and, incredibly, only four points behind world beaters Barça who have played a match more than Valencia. A two-nil victory away against city rivals Levante carried on VCF’s impressive league run, thanks to a Javi Venta own goal and a Tino Costa free kick. The team were solid, serious and well-organised. Mathieu and

Jordi Alba on the left wing combined to form a dangerous double act whilst the other dynamic duo of Ruiz and Rami, at the centre of defence, offered a solid wall against the granotas’ attacking plans. There then followed another international break of two weeks whilst the next league game was to be against Real Madrid. The merengues, dressed in red, opted for a defensive trio in midfield, no doubt wary of early Valencia pressure. They were not to be disappointed, the Chés piled on early pressure but with no goal to show for it. In a lapse of defensive concentration they allowed Xabi Alonso to take a quick free kick, which Benzema expertly stuck away. Valencia tried to strike back but Soldado was frustrated by some solid Madrid defending and, in yet another defensive gaffe, Sergio Ramos was allowed all the time and space he needed to head home a corner. Valencia

and Mestalla reacted for once and three minutes later Soldado got one back and just when it seemed that VCF were in with a chance, their goalkeeper Diego Alves committed a real clanger. A long speculative ball from the Madrid defence could easily have been collected by the Brazilian but he decided he had lost the use of his hands and tried to head it away. He failed and Ronaldo scored and the game was effectively over, or so it seemed. Soldado yet again scored to bring it back to 2-3, he had another ruled out for an inexistent offside and then in the dying seconds, Higuaín, the Madrid centre forward made a stunning save (with his hands) to deny the home team a well-deserved point. The handball was difficult to spot, in defence of the referee; the offside was a complete invention that robbed the Chés of a memorable fight back.

Valencia had no time to feel sorry for themselves because four days later they had an important game against Belgian team, Racing Genk, in the Champions League. Emery’s team knew that nothing short of a victory was required to give themselves any chance of going through to the next round. The result was a new record for Valencia in Europe… 7-0!!! Goals from the Jonas brother, Pablo Hernández, Aduriz, Tino Costa and, of course, a hat-trick from Soldado meant that the Chés only needed a score draw or victory away at Chelsea to go through to the knockout stages. The fact that Bayer Leverkusen scored two late goals against the Londoners meant that effectively they needed to beat the ‘blanc i negres’ or they were out of the Champions League. Unfortunately, that was no great problem. From the outset Chelsea were the hungrier team, Valencia were slow to react to everything, defensive errors realistically gifted Chelsea the tie and Chelsea beat Valencia 3-0. Ironically, two of Chelsea’s goals were set up by ex-Valencia CF player Juan Mata. The Chés now have to be content with Europa League football. Valencia should have been in the last sixteen but the goalless draw away to Genk may well come back to haunt Emery as an exit at this stage of the competition is simply not good enough. Back in the league, Valencia travelled away to Rayo Vallecano, where they ground out another three points, thanks to goals from Jonas and Tino Costa. There was little football to see and, in all honesty, Rayo could have snatched a late equaliser but VCF prevailed. With one eye firmly on the upcoming game against Chelsea, Emery

¡Así, así, así gana Madrid!

decided to leave Soldado on the bench against their next rivals, Espanyol. After an early converted penalty from Tino Costa, who is on a bit of a roll at the moment, Emery’s gamble seemed to have paid off but Espanyol got back into the game whilst Valencia seemed lethargic and at times disinterested. When the visitors equalised, the Valencia manager decided he need the ‘efecto Soldado’ and after only four minutes on the pitch, he grabbed the winner. How Del Bosque continues to call upon Fernando Torres, who can’t get a game down the local park, whilst Soldado is knocking them in for fun is beyond the comprehension of many, myself included. Could Soldado weave his magic against Chelsea? Sadly, no.

The upcoming fixture list offers some tantalising bouts. Away games against Betis, Villarreal and Racing and at home against money bags Málaga, Real Sociedad and humble Osasuna all present difficult ties for the Chés. With a Copa del Rey match away to Cádiz thrown in to boot, all adds up to an exciting couple of months for VCF. See you in February 2012. Bon Nadal i Amunt! COMMENT

Patriotic Paella In recent years, two remarkable scientific discoveries have been made regarding the human brain that appear to contradict each other. One is that many of the idiosyncrasies of our character, be they our preference for one or two teaspoons of sugar in our coffee or our penchant for leather jackets or nylon anoraks, are already programmed from birth in our genes. The other is that this programme can be changed in much more profound ways, by rewiring our synapses ourselves through training or due to strong emotional pressures. The latter fact is what helps us learn new skills that may at first seem impossible, from riding a bike to speaking a language. But it can also help us learn bad habits, become more set in our ways, or even have strong political opinions based very little on reason. A university in the U.S.A. conducted a curious experiment with brain scans on Republicans and Democrats while asking them questions about politics. Their director of clinical psychology said: "None of the circuits involved in conscious reasoning were particularly engaged. Essentially, it appears as if partisans twirl the cognitive kaleidoscope until they get the conclusions they want, which eliminates negative emotional states and activates positive ones." However, there was no increase in activity in the part of the brain most associated with reasoning. In other words, the study pointed to a total lack of reason in political decision-making.

As I write this article, my TV behind me is broadcasting the only debate between the two main candidates for prime minister of Spain and the conclusion to the last paragraph comes as no surprise to me. One of the candidates, the favourite, is being deliberately vague about his plans because he is the one most likely to have to carry them out soon. The other, the underdog, is getting bogged down in details that 99% of the population won’t understand anyway. In the interlude, his campaign’s vice-president and image creator was interviewed on TV unshaven and dishevelled, which explains why his boss is the underdog. Anyhow, by the time this is published, you’ll know who the new prime minister is, although from what I’m hearing on my TV so does everybody else already. Besides, it has also been scientifically discovered that we have already taken nearly all of our supposedly wellpondered decisions subconsciously before we are actually conscious of them. As in any country in economic recession, the voters are going to blame the national government for everything, vote them out and therefore feel a bit better for a day or two. This comes as no surprise to me. What always does surprise me in politics is when one party actually stays in power for a long time in a democracy with supposed freedom of speech and information, as in the Valencia region (where I use the word supposed with ironic emphasis when referring to local TV).

Of course, dictators tend to last longer for obvious reasons, though the Arab Spring should give us all cause for hope with its implications for citizens’ journalism and the social media as mobile phones show truths that governments deny. Clearly, people’s fear of a dictatorial government (as Spain has suffered) can lead to a kind of mass Stockholm syndrome with people actually adulating the leader. The most extreme and obvious example of this was the Nazis in the 20th century and the founding father of advertising agencies and spin doctors, Dr. Goebbels. After so many years of being told who to love and loathe, it is sadly not surprising that people ended up actually believing such nonsense. But it has never ceased to amaze me that immediately after the war, when the awful truths were uncovered, so many people interviewed still believed their cause was just. This is the power of rewiring our synapses, the thing we used to call brainwashing. I’ve always felt sorry for those who have grown up with overbearing governments, parents or even teachers that impose their opinions on them, be they political, religious or patriotic. Still, at least now I can understand that their problem is neurological and not bother listening to them or arguing with them any more. However much I tell them that two and two is four, I now know they will go on believing that it’s three whatever I say. They’ll call it something uplifting like faith or

Controversial designer Javier Mariscal

pride and hotly affirm their democratic right to believe that the world was literally made in seven days, their country is the best in the world and Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Leo Messi. But we now know it’s just the wiring gone wrong over the years. And then there’s the way they’re always putting other people’s medals on their own chests. They sing “We are the champions” in the first person, as in Spain after the last World Cup, when in fact the champions were just eleven overpaid lads who were thousands of miles away. Meanwhile, 45 million other people back in Spain cheered and felt better because Iniesta had stuck the ball in the net, despite the fact they still had to pay off their insane mortgages or look for a job the next day. They say “we” when talking about a battle or war their country won or a grievance “our people” suffered centuries ago, despite the fact that it was a completely different society and very possibly not even their direct ancestors involved. What still remains unclear to me is why they often see symbols as more important than people. When these people see their country’s flag they feel the urge to stand up and place their hand over their heart while a lump comes to their throat. I see a piece of rectangular cloth. And I’m obviously not going to get involved in the dizzying effects that religious symbols seem to have on them. To me, these examples are like the wise man pointing to the moon while these people look at his finger and worship it. A flag represents many things, above all a group of people, and a religious symbol can be used to indicate one’s partiality for a particular

moral code, but these people seem to see the symbol as more important than what it actually represents. I remember visiting the Montserrat monastery in Catalonia and out of curiosity joining the queue to see the Virgin of the same name, a patron saint and famous symbol of Catalan identity. I was surprised to see that the historical figure was perfectly accessible to the general public, and as the visitors passed by, they all left their germs on it with a little kiss. Not me, which angered the elderly lady with a runny nose and halitosis in front of me who had just left her saliva on the Virgin as a sign of her respect. I’m just glad they don’t have the same custom in Valencia, where patron Saint Vincent’s withered brown arm is proudly on display in the cathedral, again as a dubious sign of respect for their beloved saint. Einstein once said that, “Nationalism is the measles of mankind, an infantile disease.” What he meant is that younger, newlyestablished countries tend to be more patriotic. Take the Americas, or far younger examples as in the Balkans and – dare I say it – the likes of Catalonia. Of course, if you ask Serbs or Catalans they’ll tell you, “We go back hundreds of years”, as if they were personally as old as Yoda. (Incidentally, Catalonia’s longest-serving president and nationalist, Jordi Pujol, bears a striking resemblance and some say he was indeed around at the time of the Crusades.) When Spain’s democracy was established, certain regions rushed to affirm their own nationalistic identity, and in the ensuing years their wily politicians have gained ever more power in exchange for support at Congress in Madrid. The result is that there

are now overlapping powers that some see as an unnecessary drain on the economy and believe that a final decision should be taken regarding independence. Personally, the only version of nationalism I prefer is the one expressed by a famous Valencian designer who went to live in Catalonia, where he was so successful in creating Barcelona’s Olympic mascot, Cobi. Javier Mariscal was once asked to define the difference between Catalan and Valencian nationalism. He replied that Valencians express their identity by having a paella under a pine tree. Ché què bo! Addendum: The Partido Popular did indeed win the elections with a landslide victory, giving them an absolute majority in both Congress and the Senate, as well as their overwhelming majorities regionally. Now we might hear what their plans are. The Catalan and Basque nationalists also advanced, the latter also seeing the emergence of a more extreme nationalist party, AMAIUR, now that ETA has declared to have ceased its armed campaign. It now has more power than the traditional Basque nationalists, PNV. The communists from Izquierda Unida also advanced, as did UPyD, an anti-nationalist party that has become the fourth most voted party in Spain and won its first seat at Congress for Valencia. Calls are rising for a voting system of proportional representation due to the fact that regional nationalist parties have always won a disproportionate number of seats in congress to the detriment of the latter two nationwide parties. VALENCIA WORLD To his booming career as a waiter, getting paid little for slaving himself for long hours in a row, knowing this is all there is left for him here? As most of you know by now, Spain is in deep shit. I don’t have to point it out here, the extent to which the economy is dead. If you’re looking for a job, you’re in the wrong country. So much for the positive side of my piece. Don’t get me wrong. I’m dying to get reunited with my lovely boyfriend! We didn’t choose to wear rings for nothing. No, we’re not getting married, yet. Un anillo de compromiso is what they call it here. That’s what it is. A real commitment with my gorgeous waiter of 28, something I never thought would happen to me.

It’s Me or Brazil! I’m surrounded by a mix of different men while having a Pepsi in Finnegan’s at Plaza de la Reina. I love the ambience of this Irish pub, they let me sit for hours, having two drinks only, writing my next piece for 24/7 Valencia. Remember that new Dutch girl in town, who was born in Colombia and brought up in Holland? I hopped some waiters and got struck by lightning? The year 2011 turned out to be a fantastic year, even though I knew it would end abruptly. Christmas awaits us, a city full of extra beautiful lights, and I will be spending the holidays very far away from my favourite waiter in town. Boo-hoo! He used to work at that chocolate place, Valor. On Sundays you’ll see a queue outside, waggling old folks waiting to enjoy their chocolate con churros. Public transport drops them all at Plaza de la Reina wearing fake teeth, lipstick and freshly dyed pink hair. I’m sure my darling Alexandro doesn’t miss them drooling over him, looking for a late night ride from a young stud. I do, by the way.

Arriving in Valencia two-and-a-half years ago, I planned on spending my life as a single woman for at least another decade or so. I wasn’t looking for real love, nor was I expecting to meet my soul mate, since I was perfectly at ease with my life as it was.

Dutch pension for having bipolar disorder and the freedom to live wherever I want, I feel very confident about my next lifechanging experience. I’d say, go learn Portuguese, buy that plane ticket and find out what it’s like to be in another beautiful place! As you all know, Brazil is booming. The economy is rising to the top and jobs are all over the place. Now you understand why I don’t want my love to come back? Of course it’s not me OR Brazil. It’s me AND Brazil! It’s me, Alexandro, tropical beaches, a beautiful apartment and costly tickets. My mother in Holland isn’t going to like this at all, even though she loves Alexandro, but then again I’ll go my own way, following the path I see ahead of me. May you all find your way in 2012, making it a successful life-changing experience! Merry Christmas to all of you! See you next year. I’m not gone yet! Marilûz Vergaz If you can’t get enough of my silly writings, you can follow me on www.hubpages. com. Look for Escobana.

Today it’s pouring down since the moment I woke up. Love those rainy winters in Valencia! You dress comfortable, hit the road with your umbrella and you smile inside when seeing the Valenbisi stations, suddenly all filled with bicycles. The gota fria makes Finnegan’s look like my second living room and makes Holland look like my old far away life. Where winters used to be annoyingly long, freaking cold and absolutely unbearable to me.

I miss him drooling over me, holding me tight, making me fly to the moon and back. Seeing him going through customs at the airport of Valencia made November 10th the worst day of 2011. On his way back to beautiful Brazil, crying my heart out when his plane really took off.

Could it be that my next winter to endure will be one at the south coast of Brazil? Or better yet, is that new Dutch girl in town planning to leave this wonderful city, turning life upside down, for the sake of love? I sure am going to give it a try! Skype is such a disappointing way of keeping in touch with your sweetheart, after having spent a year together as a couple. Longdistance relationships are only fun if there are mutual plans of having a future together.

“Isn’t he coming back?” friends ask. “I hope not,” I tell them frankly. Back to what?

Lucky for me I’m an online writer at www. hubpages.com. Next to receiving my Article © 2011/12 24/7Valencia

WOMAN

may or may not have to say about 2012. We'll just have to make sure we have a little bit more fun, just in case!

I said it last month and I was hoping the High Street would have got its sartorial act together by now, but I'm still completely uninspired and utterly unimpressed as I wander in and out of the shops like a lost puppy, desperate to put my hard-earned money back into the economy and play my part in pulling this country (slash world) out of the recession, but I just can't. I'm not buying any of it! There's no ooh-ing and aah-ing, no gasps of delight and certainly no impulse purchases. There's been no wardrobe updating whatsoever this month, let alone this season, despite how excited I was when all the lookbooks came out with their metallic hues and jewel-toned palettes. All the stock piled high on the shelves is so boring!

many pieces of a very small, very odd, gold-studded patent pink bag/bucket/ bread basket on chains? Not sure what she was thinking when she designed that... Ooh, maybe it’s a carry case for a teacup Chihuahua?

And if it’s not boring, then it’s Versace for H&M, which was downright scary and I'm not just talking about the price tags. The only items worth investing in were the leather jackets and skirts (still drooling over the Versace motifembossed pleated leather mini, but I just wasn't prepared to camp outside the Colón store from midnight for a piece of clothing. I don't love fashion that much...) The garish patterns, the odd cut-outs designed to reveal parts of the body no one ever imagined were supposed to be revealed, the tassels that wouldn't look out of place in a strip club... It was all just a little bit much. It's nearly a month on and the shelves are still stacked with Donatella's patent sandals and far too

Not only has it been a pretty awful year for our dress sense, but it has been rather up and down in other aspects, too, and although I am obviously coming from what I know from my beloved friends and family, I am absolutely positive we are not the only unlucky ones around feeling a bit sorry for ourselves! We've had break-ups and make-ups and more break-ups, falls down the stairs and up escalators, car crashes, weight gain and weight loss (and weight gain – Merry Christmas!), loved ones moving away and moving back, vacations and staycations – all making this one hell of an emotional roller coaster of a year. I am glad to be welcoming in a new one, if I'm honest, despite what the Mayan people

It’s no wonder girls across the City (sorry, can't speak for the rest of the country, I haven't left Valencia for months, boo hoo) are finding themselves hard-pushed to spend their well-earned paychecks on clothes, even with the sudden appearance of 'special price' racks springing up all over the place, and garments that started off at over 50 euros being miraculously knocked down to 20, we are still not convinced! What is going on, 2011? I say bring on 2012, sharpish.

Speaking of fun, I am expanding my horizons and starting to fulfil my New Year's resolutions before January even begins, and even impressing myself, if you will allow me to be a bit big-headed about things. Well it's my column, so I will be big-headed and tell you just how brilliant I am at my new hobby. It's so grown-up you are going to think that me in 40 years is writing this instead, but I don't care, I'm not ashamed to tell you how into knitting I am. Yes, you read right, knitting. According to the source of all things true and indisputable – Wikipedia, of course – “Stitch ‘n’ bitch” is a term that dates back to ‘as early as the Second World War”. Well, I don't have a knitting group, but I certainly make the most of TV time and Skype conversations with family and friends overseas to get on with it on my own. And it’s sooo relaxing. It's not always the ideal activity for a daydreamer like me, though, as it only takes a moment's distraction to make a complete mess of things – you look down and it’s like Shaun the Sheep threw up in your lap – but I have made several scarves and even a hot water bottle cover. I'm starting on a big, fuzzy, woolly jumper now, and if I get it finished – we all know I am easily distracted – I have a feeling it will do me rather well as I step outside into the cold and brave the Christmas crowds, will disguise my bloated belly from overeating during the holiday season very nicely with its oversized-ness, and will keep me cosy and snug on my way out of the city for a little trip away with my closest guys and gals to ring in the New Year. I hope, dear readers, that you all enjoy the season to be jolly immensely and I can't wait to tell you all about my Yuletide adventures when we meet again in February. That way, I can avoid the subject of yet another blooming birthday of my own that month and we can all pretend that I don't age at all (which I believe was my New Year's Resolution several years ago, but the – very faint – laughter lines around my eyes seem to have proven that one unfulfilled... Bah, humbug!). See you in 2012, lovelies! Anita Darling Photo Mateo Sanchis. Article © 2011/12 24/7 Valencia
