SAN JUAN – The Start of Something New More than 400 years ago, Lope de Vega wrote, “Salen de Valencia / Noche de San Juan / Cien coches de damas / Al fresco de la mar”. On the night of 23 June, Valencians all over the region will be celebrating San Juan. The biggest parties are a day later, down at the Postiguet beach in Alicante, but as you know, the city of Valencia is never backwards in coming forwards if there’s a fiesta to be enjoyed, especially if it includes fire and maybe even a few fireworks. In Valencia everything is centred on Malvarrosa and Las Arenas so prepare yourself for a one-night-only ‘Fallas on the beach’ with a taste of ancient mysticism celebrating the four elements. You may spend the whole night trying to get down there, which can be a nightmare unless you are within walking distance. Expect huge traffic jams and nowhere to park. From the centre, the best way is to cross the river from the Torres de Serranos and squeeze yourself onto a packed tram at the Estación de Madera or take Line 5 on

the Metro and change onto the tram at Serrería-Maritime. If you eventually make it, you can join up with the literally hundreds of groups of people building their own bonfires in a vast, open air party on the sand. When the clock strikes twelve, everybody rushes into the sea for a midnight dip while a bunch of lunatics dressed as wizards (usually drunk on *queimadas and ancient medicinal ‘herbs’) throw flowers into the water muttering strange incantations to invoke the maritime spirits. On this night of the year, at least, that soggy thing your hand touches while swimming in the Med might be a rose petal rather than a crisp packet or a jelly fish or something infinitely more disgusting. You won’t be just floating about on your back, though. Directed by the eccentric bloke in the pointy hat, you will have to jump seven waves if you want good luck for the next year, and nine if you want to get pregnant (that one only works if you are a woman). Don’t bother with a towel after the

nocturnal bathing, the traditional way to get dry is to jump another seven times (it’s always seven, isn’t it?) over a bonfire. This being Valencia, of course, some families, not wishing to waste good firewood, stick a paella on the top so be careful to look at what you’re jumping over. The traditional Valencia dish is best enjoyed without a sandy footprint in the middle. Tradition has it that San Juan is the opposite of Halloween. In both festivals, the doors to the spirit world open but while Halloween is the time for evil spirits and witches to roam the Earth, San Juan, being the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, is when the powers of Darkness have their weakest hold over the world. It’s the spirits of Light that are around in the Water, Fire, Earth and Air granting wishes and ensuring fertility and a bumper harvest (which sounds pretty good to me). Unless you’ve been sampling the wizard’s herbs, however, most of the spirits you’ll see will be brought in plastic Mercadona bags Article © 2012 24/7 Valencia

by the hundreds of folk adhering to the ancient Valencia custom of the botellón or bought in the verbenas and beach bars that spring up all along the promenade. Caipirinhas and queimadas to the sound of loud Spanish pop music from the mobile discos contrast with the whisky and Fanta lemon or vodka and Red Bull and the sound of strummed guitars and bongo drums around the bonfires. The festival of San Juan has its origins in the Christianisation of the Roman festival of the goddess Minerva. This in turn originates from ancient Norse and Celtic festivals marking the summer equinox and the harvest and planting season. One such was the festival of Alban Heruin, a Nordic wizard who could, amongst other things, ward off disease, bring you strength in battle and bestow horrible stomach complaints on your enemies (a good man to know in a crisis, I should think). The tradition spread down through Germany and Celtic Britain and Ireland to ancient Greece (the feast of Hephaestus) and Rome. It was then adopted by Christians as, by some strange coincidence, it happened to be John the Baptist’s

birthday, exactly six months before Christmas. Nowadays bonfires will be lit on this very night from the cold wastes of Chilean Patagonia, where it’s the beginning of winter, to Cork in Ireland, where they also have a beach-based festival but swap the caipirinhas for pints of Murphy’s. For Valencians, San Juan means the start of summer. Spain’s about to close down for a couple of months (and given the present economic climate, who knows if it will open up again in September!). School’s out and students have been known to burn their books and notes in the San Juan fires. From this point on, we have well and truly reached a time of year when the focus moves away from the city centre and people look to the beach for their entertainment. It’s a time when it’s perfectly OK for Valencians (not just *guiris who’ve been wearing them since February) to wear shorts on any occasion and a time when Spanish telly, believe it or not, gets even crappier.

a new beginning than, say, New Year’s Eve. The equinox, a fresh start, a turning point. Whether you’re a Druid courting the favour of the spirits of the field, St. John the Baptist washing away sins or just someone who’s saying “Summer’s here. Let’s party!”, San Juan taps into something universal that spans cultures, religions and centuries right back to the dawn of our existence. Don’t forget your flip-flops. David Rhead and José Marín

VALENCIA BOOKS

JASON WEBSTER Could you see your detective novels being made into a film one day? Yes, absolutely. I’ve always thought that Cámara could be played by Javier Bardem. There’s a physical presence about him, yet also a certain sensitivity. Describe a typical day for you… Writing is a job. I get up, get the kids off to school, then head upstairs to my study and sit down to work. When I’m ‘in production’, actually writing a book, I’ll do between 2,000 and 3,000 words a day. And I don’t get up from my desk until they’re done.

JASON WEBSTER Who is Max Cámara? A chief inspector in the Spanish national police and the hero of my series of detective novels, the first of which, Or the Bull Kills You, came out last year. The series is set in Valencia, although Cámara himself is from Albacete (not unlike a lot of policemen in Valencia). He has problems with authority, smokes homegrown marijuana provided by his anarchist grandfather, and tends to think in traditional Spanish proverbs. Tell us about your new novel, A Death in Valencia. A Death in Valencia is the second in the series, and starts with the murder of a paella restaurant owner in the Cabanyal area of the city. In real life, the town hall has plans to knock down a great swathe of this historic fishermen’s quarter, and I threaded that into the narrative of the novel. Also, the Pope is visiting Valencia and a high profile abortionist is kidnapped just as he arrives, possibly by maverick right-wing conservatives within the other Spanish police force, the Guardia Civil. Meanwhile, the block of flats Cámara lives in collapses one day, and he suddenly finds himself homeless.

He’s a fascinating character, something of a picaresque hero, who played an absolutely vital role in ensuring the success of the D-Day landings and the subsequent Normandy campaign. There aren’t many people who you can say played a pivotal role in changing world history. Pujol is one of them. Interview by Owl

Afternoons are spent trying to catch up with odds and ends – e-mails, social media stuff, articles, requests for interviews... That kind of thing takes up a lot more time these days. Then it’s being with the kids over the course of the evening. My wife teaches flamenco dance and is often working at that time of day. After that it’s bed, sleep, and dreaming time – very important for new ideas and resolving certain knotty problems. How does living in the Valencia countryside compare to living in the city of Valencia? It’s bliss, quite frankly. I found the noise levels in Valencia unbearable in the end – a new metro line was being built outside our Russafa flat, and dangerouslooking cracks were developing up and down the walls (some of this also turned into material for A Death in Valencia…). Now we live most of the time in the huerta, very close to the city, yet far enough away not to be overwhelmed by it. It’s a perfect situation for me – enough peace to be able to work, yet within easy reach of a great, very stimulating city. Do you have any new projects in the pipeline? The third novel in the Max Cámara series – The Anarchist Detective – is already written, and will be coming out next year, I suspect around June as well. At the moment I’m working on a book about a Spanish double agent in World War II – Juan Pujol, alias ‘Garbo’.

FOOD

PICNIC FOR SAN JUAN OR SIN JUAN By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca So ‘‘June Is Bustin’ Out All Over’’ and as there’s not much fear of rain in Valencia spoiling picnic plans, it’s time to escape the city grime and take your bike and yourself for an airing in the campo equipped with your picnic for comida al fresco. For our picnic we could choose chicken drumsticks, Scotch eggs or even go to Morocco with falafels, but instead we are going to investigate a traditional Valencian recipe which, in contrast to the usual suspects of paella, horchata and fartons, hides from the limelight. This paparazzi-shy dish is generally sold in bakeries but rarely seen on menus, but back in the glory days when Malvarrosa Beach was lined with merenderos (outdoor wooden picnic areas), this was the traditional food that grandmothers packed up for their families to eat by the sea. So in the month when we get ready to jump the waves for San Juan (June 23rd), we present the Coca de tomate, pimiento y atún (Coca de tomaca y pebrot amb tonyina in Valencian). So delicious that you can certainly have it ‘Sin Juan’ as well. Researching this recipe has been somewhat problematic. As well as the wide range of different cocas, savoury and sweet, as is so often the case with family recipes, there seems to be no definitive one for this. Some say it should be more of an empanada (similar to a Cornish pasty) style, but in one thing at least all the grannies agree. The pastry should contain alcohol! Although here again, some say white wine and some say beer. Never having made a pastry with white wine and oil before, I plummeted for an open-topped coca, with white wine pastry and it definitely does add a subtle wine flavour. So here goes…

Coca with tomato, red peppers and tuna ‛Coca amb

tonyina’

Ingredients • For the Pastry (open-topped Coca) • 375g flour • 1 cup white wine • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil • Pinch of salt • 1 beaten egg (optional) • For the Filling • 1 kg fresh ripe tomatoes (loosen the skins by soaking in boiling water, peel and dice) • 2 large red peppers, diced • 200 gm tonyina (atún en salmuera, fillet of tuna belly in brine) • 100 gm tuna in olive oil • 25 gm pine nuts • Olive oil for frying

and chopped tomatoes. Stir and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Allow to cook down, stirring occasionally, until all the liquids have been absorbed (30 minutes to 2 hours). Meanwhile make the pastry… Place the flour and salt in a large, heatproof bowl. Gently heat the olive oil (be careful that it is not too hot as your hands are going to have to mix it in awhile!). Mix all the liquid ingredients into the flour bit by bit, taking care not to add too much liquid or you will have to add more and more flour and will end up with enough pastry to carpet your house! Leave to rest for around 30 minutes. Finally roll the pastry out onto an oiled baking tray and let it fall just over the sides so you can make nice corners around the edge of your coca. Leave to rest in the fridge until your tomato and pepper mix is ready. And if all this pastry making is too stressful, you can use ready-made pastry (shortcrust) available in most supermarkets – shhh, no one will know! Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F / Gas mark 4.

You will need: A large mixing bowl A flat baking tray 1 large frying pan or saucepan To start our recipe, we begin with the filling as with maximum cooking time, this absorbs all the flavours and brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes and peppers. In a large, heavy-bottomed, deep frying pan or saucepan, heat a little olive oil. When it has reached that early sizzling moment add the pine nuts and toast them lightly. Be very careful not to burn them, as these little chaps are certainly worth more than their weight in gold. Remove from the pan and set aside for later. Add a little more oil and when heated, add the diced peppers. Cook until they have become soft and are just at the point before they start to caramelize, before adding the peeled

La Ola Fresca Calle Músico Magenti 11, Benimaclet, Valencia. Reservations: 610026305

When all your tomato mix is ready, add the tonyina, tinned tuna and toasted pine nuts and cook for a further 5 minutes. Season with salt to your liking. Allow to cool a little before adding to your pastry base. Tuck up the edges and, if you like, glaze with a beaten egg. Place in your preheated oven and bake for around 15 minutes and off you go to San Juan! What’s cooking in La Ola Fresca in June: For more information: www.laolafresca. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LA CARME People who visit our home are always slightly amazed at how much stuff we pack into our rooms. D and I are terrible hoarders, we collect things –ceramics, books, cocktail paraphernalia, books, pictures, records and CDs. Oh, and mirrors. Nothing is of any great value but all are things which give us great pleasure. I have a particularly hard time getting rid of the books and LPs. I sort them into a pile to keep and a pile to sell. Then I invariably re-sort them and the pile to keep is almost always bigger than the selling pile, so it all takes such a long time. Poco a poco is the motto here. I'll keep you posted. When I told a friend of mine that ‘La Carme’ was this month's restaurant, he was, first of all, very surprised that I hadn't been there before but also told me that the place always reminds him of our home. “It’s crammed with old and interesting things, just like your place,” were his exact words. “You'll love it, and the food is great.” In fact, he wasn't the only one of our friends to sing the praises of this French-Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen. Other friends regularly go there for dinner when the family are over for a visit, so I was looking forward to it. I arranged to meet up with P at around 20.00h for an aperitif nearby. I kind of knew that she would be late, as usual, so took a copy of 'The Week', my current favourite magazine, along with me for company. At 20.45h, I got a call from P saying she was on the metro and would be with me ASAP. I called the restaurant and advised them we would be about 15 minutes late for our 21.00h reservation. “Tranquilo!” said the calm, reassuring voice of a man who would turn out to

be Miguel when we finally arrived and introduced ourselves. Let’s begin with the interior of La Carme. It really is lovely, brick and deep red painted walls adorned with objects and pictures, wooden floors and the typical Valencia beamed ceiling. A long, dark wood bar with mosaic at each end and a white marble top is the first thing you notice as you walk in. There’s an old phone on the wall behind, beside which sits a big, well-thumbed diary. We took a table by the window, open to let the sultry night air flow, and looked through the room with the simply and elegantly laid tables to a large open kitchen, where the owner/chef, Rafa and his assistant were preparing the food. La Carme is billed as market fresh FrenchMediterranean cuisine. It is directly behind the newly rebuilt Mossén Sorell market, and has actually been part of the restaurant scene in the Barrio del Carmen for almost 30 years. They had to move from their last premises 18 years ago because the building was to be reformed, something that still hasn't happened! We had wines by the glass, a white for P and a red for me. Both were very good Valencian house wines, which I noticed that all the regulars were drinking, and did the usual, dispensed with the menu and allowed the chef to choose. Soon the food began to arrive – Pâté with excellent bread, gherkin and unsalted butter came first, followed by a refreshing house salad of mixed leaf, avocado and melon with a yoghurt dressing that cleansed the palate. Next came a delicious crépe filled with chicken in a cream sauce. Then came a house speciality, Costillas a la miel, a pork rib slow-baked in the oven with a rich honey sauce and pureed potatoes, the pork was juicy and so tender it fell off the bone. Finally, we had Escudella gratinada de merluza con gambas y almejas, an

oven-baked hake steak cooked in a prawn and clam sauce and topped with grilled cheese that was melt-in-the-mouth. We really didn't think we could eat anything else but, “You have to tell your readers about our isla flotante (île flottante). It's one of the things we're famous for!” OK! It is the lightest of desserts, a poached meringue floating on a sea of custard, light, refreshing and delicious. There was also the matter of a small strawberry ice cream with fresh strawberries which, though never mentioned, turned up at the same time and was delicious, too. Rafa came out of the kitchen to meet and chat to us towards the end of our meal. He is justifiably proud of his restaurant and the people who work with him. La Carme is Valencian run and owned and a classic dining night out in the Barrio del Carmen. The menu is interesting and the idea is great, dinner is 16€ per person Wednesday – Thursday and 20€ Friday – Saturday. Sunday lunch is also 16€. The price includes starter, main course, dessert and bread. You could do what we did and share everything, so effectively ending up with double the dishes. The service is unhurried, friendly and attentive, never fussy. There is a good wine list featuring wines from Spain and France. TAPAS BAR

TABERNA EL OLIVO This is the real Spain, set in the historic centre of Valencia and just a brief stroll from Plaza del Carmen. The first thing that captures the eye is the attractive harlequin design of the interior and then the olive tree that shades the ample terrace. Run by two experienced chef / owners, this is as Spanish a tapas bar as you will find in the city. Carlos has run Andalusian bars for over 30 years and his mother is from Seville and father from Málaga. Mucha alegría! Juanma was born in Cádiz in the south and has built a good reputation for his vegetarian tapas, too. Both of them are warm and friendly characters, popular and wellrespected by locals and visitors. There’s a good cross-mix of couples and groups on the terrace and every time we have been, it has been a case of getting there early to get a seat as this is an increasingly popular hangout! Indeed, it has become a meeting point for locals of the barrio, the kind of bohemian crowd who know what they like when it comes to good value food and drink and having a good time. The last time we went, on a balmy spring night, the terrace was completely packed by 21.15h. Taberna El Olivo is a place where everyone is made to feel welcome. The crowd ranges in age from 20 to 60-somethings. Article © 2012 24/7 Valencia / Photos © El Olivo

The tapas menu is conveniently available in a number of languages, including Spanish, English, French and Italian! To accompany our Spanish beers, Jaunma laid on some Andalusian tapas. The shrimp fritters (Tortillitas de camarón) were filling and the marinated dogfish (Cazón en adobo) was spicy. We then shared a fine plate of fried fish (pescadito), to which we added lemon for an extra tang. Our dish of mussels was sweet and tasty. The red wine was flowing as the night progressed and we enjoyed a smooth crianza, Príncipe de Viana from Navarra, to accompany our dishes. Yes, James Bond would have chosen a white wine but us lesser mortals fancied a vino tinto that night. The combination of tapas was just right and we unwound with some manzanilla infusions. They currently do not do desserts. Amongst their many specialities you will find artichokes, homemade croquettes, grilled sardines, fried prawns, octopus, cured ham, a selection of cheeses and much more. All tapas are made in the moment, which means you can take your time over a glass of wine or beer. It was an agreeable atmosphere and the service was friendly and efficient yet unobtrusive. We even got to enjoy a

passing fire-juggling punk performance out on the square with Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven” as the rocking soundtrack! El Olivo is the kind of place that is open and spontaneous due to much of the life being out on the terrace, and good for groups and dating couples. There is also some limited space to dine inside, too. Yes, this is a good night out and relaxing during the day as well. Me gusta! COMMENT

Valencia’s Follies A tour of the Valencia Region these days is becoming reminiscent of films such as I Am Legend, 28 Days After and The Day After Tomorrow in the images of a decadent past splendour that abound. There are the huge avant-garde buildings in Valencia city’s old riverbed: the Palace of the Arts sitting like a huge spaceship waiting to take off, the massive eye of the IMAX cinema squatting above shimmering water and the razor-backed Science Museum, lying like the skeleton of a fantastic extinct monster (how apt). Beyond these, the highest point on Valencia’s skyline is provided not by a building but by an unnecessarily extravagant bridge. Next to this we find the Ágora, a giant clam reaching for the sky (as clams do…not), and beyond that the Oceanographic marine park, full of the world’s exotic mammals and snazzy buildings. In Alicante there is the City of Light, Spain’s answer to Hollywood or Rome’s Cine Città that was intended to become Europe’s Mecca of the movie world. The province of Castellón to the north is not to be outdone, with a spanking new airport. So what do all of these buildings have in common, apart from their astronomical public cost? Well, they’re all, erm… pretty naff, unused and/ or empty, actually. So here’s the lowdown you won’t find in the official tourist brochures or regional TV propaganda: The City of Arts and Sciences Budget: 0.3 billion euros Real cost: 1.1 billion euros (and rising). El Palau de Les Arts This opera house, like something that just landed out of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, was inaugurated in 2005 and then spent a year closed. It is already looking a bit flaky, which is hardly surprising when one considers that its daily maintenance costs come to half the yearly budget for the Valencia Institute of Music. On top of this, heavy rain in the past has led to it being flooded

with water and mud. The elevators have been insufficient to prevent big queues considering its capacity, and some seating arrangements had to be changed because they had columns smack in front of them, obscuring the audience’s view of the stage. Strangely enough, if you stroll five minutes up the riverbed, you’ll find the Music Palace, a building which was already there and which can be used for concerts…and opera. The Hemisphere After the Palace of the Arts comes the “eye” of the IMAX cinema or Hemisphere. Your curiosity may be piqued by the weird white patterns on its roof. Fortunately, this particular artwork cost the taxpayer nothing – the seagulls have created it by crapping on it. Prince Felipe Science Museum This dinosaur skeleton bears the name of Prince Felipe (possibly to thank him for having to inaugurate it twice). It was built by the same world famous architect as the two aforementioned structures, Valencia’s own Santiago Calatrava. They say this architect has an inimitable style, though he certainly knows how to imitate himself repeatedly. But give credit where it’s due – he knows how to sell himself, which is surprising considering he’s also world famous for overshooting budgets and technical gaffes for which city councils all over are trying to sue him. He is clearly a Valencian of his time. This building provides a gigantic indoor space (which they still don’t seem to know what to do with). It has a huge, transparent wall on one side, which I believe is made of solid diamond and cleaned regularly with wads of euro banknotes. According to the regional government, this building is a great success in terms of visitor numbers, though in their figures they include anybody wandering through the ground floor (free entry), in the vicinity, passing by on the bus, glancing at it from an aeroplane or looking at a photo of it.

The Ham-Holder Then comes the bridge that has come to be known by the locals as the Jamonero due to its resemblance to the device used to hold ham legs in many a Spanish kitchen. Its official, poncy name is Azud d’Or (Golden Waterwheel, in remembrance of its cost-effectiveness). The Spanish have a habit of naming their landmarks with far more originality than their authorities – near said bridge you’ll find the ‘Dragonfly’ roundabout and the ‘Pink Panther’ roundabout, the names with which the locals have identified the mess of abstract sculptures on them. I think their real names are Broken Cutlery and Scrap Metal Turd on a Stick #2. True to Calatrava’s inimitable style, the Jamonero was budgeted at 23.2 million euros but its final cost came to 59.9 million and apparently had design faults that called for modifications. Fatal accidents soon after opening led to a traffic light being installed in the middle, making it slower to cross than an ordinary bridge. To avoid heart attacks, don’t use the inside lane. The Ágora Next stop down the riverbed: the Ágora. This was built, or should I say is still being built, by – you guessed it – Santiago Calatrava. Urban legend has it that he scribbled a drawing of it on a napkin while having dinner with Valencia’s shifty expresident Camps and thus clinched the deal (a similar rumour applies to evil pixie Bernie Ecclestone bringing the ruinous Formula 1 Street Circuit here). I say it’s still being built because it has yet to have the architect’s ‘unique’ Mazinger Z-style visor on top and seems to need a proper door fitting (it has broken twice), not to mention the leaky roof. It is used a couple of weeks a year for a tennis tournament and a fashion show, but for the rest of the year it seems to be fenced off on one side to the public who paid for it. Budget: 40 million. Real cost: 90 million (so far…). We could also harp on about the Oceanographic marine park, a new zoo, the empty buildings at the port left behind

COMMENT in the hangover from the America’s Cup binge and a multi-million euro bridge for the F1 street circuit that gets used a couple of times a year. It is fascinating that most Valencians themselves haven’t even heard of the monumental fiasco known as Sociópolis just south of the city (because it is never reported in the local public media); they often ask what those gigantic, vacant buildings are. There’s also Norman Foster’s Congress ‘Palace’, almost invisible now as it has been hemmed in by rampant speculation in the surrounding area (just like the City of Arts and Sciences), and which has also had its leaky roof. But let’s leave some limelight to the other region’s provinces… Terra Mítica The story of the Benidorm area’s theme park began with an unsolved case of arson that cleared an area of trees for the local mayor to ignore forestry laws (which were then aptly changed with the help of this same man, who went on to become the region’s environment head) and forcefully expropriate, grant the relevant licences and build the fittinglynamed Mythical Land. This is perhaps the most blatant example of public money being used for eventual private gain and backslapping, with laws being used and changed accordingly for dubious motives. Not that it has worked out entirely, since the park is by no means a financial success. The local mayor in question also went on to become the dodgy president of the entire Valencia Region (no, not Camps; the other dodgy one before him: Zaplana). The City of Light Another of Zaplana’s bright ideas (pun intended), Alicante’s Ciudad de la Luz, recently went up for sale after investments totalling 150 million euros (plus 190 million in debt). It was supposed to be Valencia’s Hollywood, but its most famous success story was in shooting an Asterix film here – though they coughed up four million euros to entice the French filmmakers. Castellón Airport This is one of the most internationally famous examples of how the region’s government has been disgracefully

wasting everyone’s money: an airport that has never been used. It is believed to have been a personal commitment by the province’s president at the time (whose huge copper statue stands outside), yet another of Spain’s most infamous sleazespattered politicians. Upon inaugurating this white elephant, he was overheard telling his grandchild, “What do you think of granddad’s airport?”, thus showing the megalomaniac’s true intention, as if his statue weren’t enough. The purported idea was for the airport to herd tourists into the eco-terrorist zone of concrete and golf courses known as Marina D’Or on the coast. Said ‘Golden Marina’ became famous throughout Spain through its hard sell in all the media for years, yet it has now felt the property bubble burst more than most places, largely because so many of the buildings here are holiday retreats. The airport’s total investment is believed to come to 150 million euros, though this does not include management costs (yes, we are still paying people to keep rabbits off the empty runway) of 6 – 8 million euros a year (i.e., about 56 million euros in total). Such utter waste of public money amid shifty dealings has long ceased to anger me, above all because I see that most Valencians seem quite happy to vote for this Pharaonic cretinism. Now that the recession is finally digging in, however, the enormous buildings in Valencia’s riverbed are no longer lit up at night midweek, presumably to save money in the recession, as if they are ashamed to show themselves. It is particularly galling at a time when the Valencia Region’s government is now using the recession as an excuse to be the first region in Spain to hop on the bandwagon of surreptitious privatisation of health care and cuts in public education. Unlike the impressive Fallas sculptures that get burned away ready for next year, the region’s leaders seem to have forgotten that these structures are here to stay and that they need maintenance. They will not simply disappear in a bonfire of the regional government’s vanities. Such gigantic monuments to public waste are the physical embodiment of political folly that is literally visible to all of Valencia’s

citizens. But they still don’t see it. El Gazza

VALENCIA WORLD

NITU CHUGANI Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. I was born in India and brought up between Ghana and Hong Kong. I have travelled to various places like Dubai, India, London, Switzerland, France and also some cities in Spain. I had an arranged marriage when I was 18 and came to Valencia. How my marriage was arranged is another story by itself!! My parents knew my husbandto-be’s family and decided to get me married. I was in Hong Kong and my future husband, who lived in Valencia, was in India searching for a bride. A few hidden phone calls and I was shown a photograph of him saying I was engaged to him! And no, I did not like the photograph!! It was a whirlwind courtship and then a typical colourful Indian marriage and it all seemed like a fairy tale to me at 18. Now 32 years down the line, the fairy tale is a distant memory. Has Valencia changed a lot since the 1980s? Oh yes, definitely. When I first came here, I got a cultural shock coming from such a modern city like Hong Kong. I could not believe that English was hardly spoken and that there was just one Chinese restaurant here! Indian groceries were unheard of – I had to get them shipped from the Canary Islands. I had a first-hand experience with the coup in 1981 and actually saw the military tanks from my window. My husband wasn't home yet and I was frightfully worried. My parents even called up from Hong Kong as soon as they saw it on the news! Yes, Valencia has changed a lot! El Corte Inglés was the only decent shopping option we had, the ‘ruta de bacalao’ was the in thing then and every weekend we would

hear of so many deaths due to drunken driving. The trend is now the ‘botellón’ (outdoor drinking) for the kids and for the local people it’s the pubs and clubs, and lounge bars. I have also seen the influx of the Chinese coming in, the recession creep in slowly and the whole change in the way the city has been governed. I have also seen how Las Fallas have now become so global and then the Tomatina rose to fame in India due to a Bollywood movie that decided to showcase it in one of their films! I quite like the fact that Valencia is now known all over the world. When I got married, many people had not even heard of this small city! I remember trying to trace it on the map! Yes, I married a stranger, came to a strange city and I survived! Describe your blog and your working day. I run an online cooking page on Facebook, Cooking with Nitu, which my cousin in Hong Kong started for me two years ago and I now have 8,500+ followers. I am still trying to figure out how I got so many followers! I try to put up my own tried and tasted recipes daily. I then started a blog, www.nitudidi.com, and my own YouTube channel where I put up bilingual videos in Spanish and English. Local television station Canal 9 filmed me, live on air, doing ‛a curry in a hurry!’ My day starts with my PC!! I am also an advisor on a cooking forum so I help people with their cooking queries via e-mail, and then proceed to post my recipe with my picture on my various pages online. I also teach and give English-speaking classes and have cooking workshops in my home when I get the people who want to learn. I sell saffron and spices (my own brand) online, too, so I have quite a lot to fill in my day. Of course, I also surf the web for new ideas for my recipes! I was given my app for Android as a gift, so that’s been a real achievement for me. Hopes for the future? I would love to see Spain back in its glory where everyone was happy and life here seemed like a perpetual holiday. I would love to bring Indian home cooking into Spanish homes (I also have a blog in Spanish) and basically spread a lot of love

and happiness through my recipes and videos. I have been told I do impart a lot of that!! And most important, I would love to see all terrorism and hunger disappearing from this world we live in today. Happiness and food is our birthright and being a food blogger, I can only say that eating good food does make one happy! To end this on a delicious note: my all-time favourite dish? Has to be Tandoori Chicken! Tel: 619 581 580 E-mail: nituchugani@hotmail.com Interview by Owl Photos © / Article © 2012 24/7 Valencia

WOMAN

I have a confession to make. I am unashamedly a huge, raging British Royal Family fan. I love the lot of them. Whereas in this country, if you are patriotic it is often seen to be fascist, I would wave my Union Jack all day long, don a red, white and blue minidress à la Geri Halliwell and even wear themed knickers. I have Union Jack bunting strung up from corner to corner, Keep Calm and Carry On (or Drink Vodka, Eat Cupcakes and many other variations we have been sent in postcard form over the years) in bright red and white stuck to the fridge, and silly British trinkets brought back from family visits. In a previous flat, I even had William, Harry and the Queen adorning my bedroom walls in gilt frames, but that didn’t last too long. I found that most boyfriends were, perhaps understandably in retrospect, a little freaked out by the royals looking out at them haughtily. So you can imagine how I was more than a little bit sad to not be able to get to the U.K. for Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, but over the moon when I received a party package from my cousin with streamers, little flags to stick in desserts and pies emblazoned with “Let them eat cake” and more bunting. I had all my friends over for a Coronation chicken and rice lunch and we enjoyed the sunshine while the whole of London got drenched in rain during the pageant, a patriotic, no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 60year reign, which we watched on a live

stream from the BBC whilst drinking beer and sangria (couldn’t get hold of any Pimm’s, unfortunately!) Whether my Spanish friends fully understood the festivities or not is another matter entirely, but having been here such a long time sometimes it’s not only nice to share a bit of heritage and history with them, but also remember where I come from for myself. And also, any excuse for a get-together, you know me! And this was actually the second themed party my friends and I have enjoyed in the space of a fortnight, and the truth is, by the looks of things, this Summer will offer us more than a few more chances to do so! Just a week before the Jubilee, we had all piled into a friend’s flat, laden with dips, chips, mini-pastries, beer, vodka and wine to enjoy the utter cheese-fest of a night that is that age-old bonkers competition, Eurovision. Although we were invited for the rather early hour of 8.30 pm, we all made it more or less on time to grab a spot on the sofa/floor/ nearest lap and crowd round their fancy plasma screen TV, ready to enjoy a good laugh at most of Europe’s expense. Or at least their Eurovision representatives, anyhow. By 10 pm, most countries had made it more than obvious that they were there to score as few points as possible, and some of the choreography was so bizarre a couple of us took to our feet and copied it all, for hilarity’s sake. We have been holding a Eurovision party for half a century now, and are all fully-

trained experts in guessing whose points will go to which countries. Frankly, it has got to a point where they either have a Swedish songwriter, or are Sweden, or the rest of countries might as well not even sing, they will get points from their neighbours anyway. Poor old Engelbert Humperdinck (emphasis on the old, there) did terribly for England, yet it was still Ireland, predictably, who gave them nearly all their points, and vice versa, which makes for extremely entertaining viewing. Spotify provided our Eurotrashthemed soundtrack to the rest of the night as we slid around the parquet floors in tights and socks, in absolute hysterics as we recalled the funniest bits of the show. Namely, the lovely Russian old ladies who produced cakes from an oven on set during their act. Quite bizarre, but shouldn't they have won, bless the old dears? For a far less ironic, but no less fun, musical extravaganza, it is becoming increasingly hard to choose which festival I should treat myself to this year. Ideally, I would hit them all, but neither am I made of money nor am I 20 years old, one’s body cannot take the same strain as it couId a few, ehem, years ago, so it will have to be just the one this year. Or maybe two. Everybody knows I haven’t missed a Benicàssim since I moved to Spain, and it is still my favourite festival, despite the fact that Vince Power is doing extremely odd things to the line-up – just a good thing that it’s just my kind of extremely odd: Jessie J, Katy B, New Order and Bombay Bicycle Club, to name a few, all in the same weekend? I’ll take it. With knobs on! Plus, I absolutely refuse to miss Florence and the Machine. She is one of my top bands of all time and to see her live would make my year, only I have the slight problem in that she is playing Thursday night, and I work Friday at 9 a.m. I think I feel a fever coming on... Touch my forehead, I’m warm, right?
