BLANQUITA This is the life! Blanquita Bar is set in one of Valencia’s most atmospheric plazas in the centro histórico, with a lovely view of the old town and is great for people watching, too. It is a mere stone’s throw from La Lonja so easy to find. Since it opened last spring, it has become a big hit with both locals and visitors. It’s a combination of good food at quite reasonable prices given the quality of the cuisine, the choice on offer, the wonderful setting and amiable service. Members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been coming here during the spring and summer months to chill out on the terrace and share a sunny Sunday paella amongst friends or midweek tapas with loved ones in the evening. We keep going back, which is a good sign. The restaurant bar is open every day from 8.45 a.m. to midnight. Enjoy a mellow breakfast in the tranquil square with a croissant + juice + cappuccino for just 3.50€. From Monday to Sunday, there is a menu of the day at lunchtime for just 10.90€ with two dishes, dessert and a drink included. Conveniently the menu is in Spanish, English and French! For starters, you can choose between a slice of omelette, a cool gazpacho from Andalusia, fried squid, grilled cuttlefish or their patatas bravas, which are fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and spicy tomato sauce. A healthy option is the Ensalada Valenciana with lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, corn, egg, tuna and carrot. We enjoyed their ‘Valencia salad’ the last time we went and the ingredients tasted as fresh as they looked. They also do a nice roasted chicken salad. Salads range from 5€ – 10€. The main dishes include a distinctive squid bocadillo with Valencian alioli sauce, a tasty grilled chicken breast or the succulent grilled pork with cheese, egg, bacon and potatoes. Enjoy a filling Pizza Margherita with tomato sauce and mozzarella. We have tried their paella several times, which we have always found to be evenly cooked, a generous portion and nicely weighted, too. It always takes a fair while to finish! Last week, for dessert, we savoured their Macedonia fruit salad with strawberries, kiwi, pear and orange pieces. It is beautifully presented and served with crema and even resembles an ice cream! We finished off with a healthy green tea, which they suggested we have with ice and lemon and it was a soothing way to digest… It was a very hot day out on the terrace and Blanquita were thoughtful enough to bring out a mobile air conditioning unit to give the diners a welcome breeze. These are the kind of touches that make all the difference when it comes to care for the customer.

Their extensive carta is attractively designed with colour illustrations and easy to use. Each dish is written in Spanish, English, French and Italian and includes the ingredients for many of them. You have a choice of 22 tapas to savour with an average price of around 6.50€… including ham and cheese, steamed mussels, puntillas (fried baby squid) as well as fried prawns, peppers or Ensaladilla Rusa. Experts at making pizza, they have 18 types to enjoy, including a tempting Calzone Verde (mozzarella, spinach and goats’ cheese) for 10.50€ or a naughty Capricciosa (tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, basil, mushrooms, artichokes, ham, olives, anchovies, hard-boiled egg and olive oil) for 12.50€. Meat lovers can enjoy their choice of three cazuelitas for 7€ each, which includes the Spanish chorizo (spicy sausage, potatoes, egg and pepper). There’s a good choice of refreshing drinks to go with your food, including fruit juices like tomato, orange, pineapple and peach. On the alcohol front, they have sangria and the famous ‘Agua de Valencia’ (cava, orange juice, vodka and gin!) by the jug, as well as a good selection of beers and Spanish wines. ‘Blanquita’ is named after a legendary character who was very well known in the alternative Barrio del Carmen nightlife

scene. She passed away and this ‘24/7 Valencia’ writer remembers her well for her gutsiness. She was a wild, eccentric, highly irreverent, very streetwise gypsy lady who always dressed in white and was adopted by the bohemian crowd of the old centre. She became a legend in her own right, playing cards on the steps of La Lonja with absurd stories to share if you let her win. The locals of the barrio are made up that this restaurant has paid homage to her and you’ll find her photo on the Blanquita tablecloth. She’s eternal. ¡Hasta siempre, Blanquita! ‘Rough Guides’ was founded in 1982 in London by Mark Ellingham. He was looking to start a guidebook that was neither heavyweight in tone nor cost-obsessed in the student tradition. Initially aimed at the low-budget traveller, Rough Guides has grown to become one of the most famous guidebooks in the world. It has over 200 titles covering all the continents of the globe and has now expanded into non-travel subjects including the Internet, popular science, ethical living, world music, blogging and iPods… 24/7 Valencia is really flattered to have been so highly recommended by Rough Guides. Indeed, ‘24/7 Valencia’ is recommended by the local, national and international media including The Guardian, Levante-EMV, El País, The Times, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Let’s Go, Thomas Cook, CNN.com, Business Traveller Magazine and many more. To celebrate the Stone Roses’ return to the stage at FIB 12, in this colourful July-August edition, you will find an exclusive collection of unpublished photos of The Stone Roses’ legendary 1989 concert in Valencia. Singer Ian Brown famously said: “ It ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.” At ‘24/7 Valencia’ you will find a dedicated team of professional photographers, designers and writers from around the world who have decided to make Valencia their permanent home. FOOTBALL

La Roja, La Bandera, Tiki-Taka y la Mare que la Parió – How I was Face-Painted into Submission The Spanish football team have dominated international competitions for the last four years. It’s a team with a strong identity and style, Spanish players are the toast of the football world and once again they have won the final of a major tournament with a superb and well-deserved victory over Italy. Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal is in the top two in the world and Fernando Alonso has just won one of the greatest victories of his life in the GP at Valencia, not to mention Spanish successes in basketball, handball and water polo. There are Spain flags and red shirts everywhere. A country in celebration is a great place to be, my family and many of my close friends are Spanish and (except for an inexplicably deep-seated hatred of Cesc Fàbregas) I have nothing against the players, so why do I find it all so irritating? The triumphalist and less than impartial attitude of the TV commentators, who act more like gibbering, salivating, superfan monkeys than journalists at times doesn't help but, of course, the real answer to the question is, being English, I'm just painfully, desperately and pathetically seething with

jealousy. I just wish it were my countrymen puffing our chests out in pride, wrapped in the flag with a knowing, self-satisfied look on our faces in the secure knowledge that we are the best in the world. Yes, WE, not just them (the players), because basking in reflected glory is what football fans do best. This, of course, has to work both ways because the other thing that football fans do best is suffering. You can't pat yourself on the back after victory and then just walk away when things aren't going so well. I take some comfort, then, (and also try to justify my bare-faced envy) in the feeling that there's a certain amount of bandwagonism going on here. When I first came to live in Spain, the national team were on a par with England when it came to blown up expectations and constantly disappointing performances. But it was the attitude of the fans which was the real eye-opener. As soon as they were knocked out (usually in the quarterfinals), most people disowned the team, explaining that their real interest was

club football. The Selección was just a distraction from the serious business going on in La Liga and the Champions League. In Catalonia, people even celebrated Spain's defeats and there was certainly very little evidence of today's face-painted flag wavers singing “Yo soy Español” on Las Ramblas or the streets of Valencia and Madrid. Important qualifying games would be played in half-empty stadiums despite the cut-price tickets. There was much debate in the press about how regionalism and the huge success and rivalry of the biggest club sides meant that the Spanish national team would constantly underachieve. Players’ and supporters’ priorities lay with their clubs, not the national team, they told us. It was Barça and Madrid who represented Spanish football on the international stage, not La Selección. Success changes everything, of course, and a winning team, especially one as hugely successful as Spain have been, will always attract more fans. Now the old press debates look decidedly outdated. These days we associate Xavi and Article © 2012 24/7 Valencia

FOOTBALL

Casillas, say, as much with the red of Spain as we do with their club colours. People all over the country are getting behind the team. And support for La Roja (as we now seem obliged to call them since some headline writers from Marca or Telecinco invented the term a few years ago) is loud, proud and everywhere. Which of course might beg that venerated, timehonoured old football question, “Where were you when you were shit?” Quite obviously, it would be stupid to claim that fickle or fair-weather football fans were peculiar to Spain. I mean, just think of Chelsea. However, if you’ve ever stood on the stands of Mestalla amongst the white hankies and droves of early leavers when things aren't going Valencia's way, it won't have escaped you that fickleness is a widespread and widely accepted part of being a football supporter in this country. This is also compounded by regionalism – it is perfectly possible and acceptable for people to be Spanish enough to celebrate when Del Bosque and company win and also be Catalan, Gallego, Basque, Madridista or Valencian enough to shrug their shoulders and disassociate themselves when they lose. Here, it seems, you can have it both ways. The success of the Roja has meant you see more and more national Spanish

flags around the place. According to estimates published in El Mundo, there have been more than twice as many Spanish flags sold in the last four years than there were in the previous 40. In a country with Spain's make-up and recent history, this seems an important issue. There is the often trotted out argument that sporting success has allowed Spaniards to embrace their flag and has ‘normalised’ the display of national colours, which for some time was limited to old fachas nostalgic for the days of Francoism. The flags of the transition to democracy in the 1970s and ‘80s were largely the regional flags of each soon-to-be autonomous community and Republicans, of course, have their own flag. There is no evidence, however, that the current rise in the number of national flags displayed on balconies or wrapped round people's waists reflects anything more than the fact the football team has done well, there's been no discernible upsurge in nationalism going hand in hand with the triumph of Tiki-Taka. When Barça come to Mestalla, some Valencia fans get their Spanish flags out, but when Madrid come, they take the Senyera along to the match. In the now regular victory celebrations, the players of the national team wrap themselves in the flag of the region of Spain where they were born.

Perhaps one of the biggest factors is availability. In the past, national flags were only available in specialist shops; nowadays you can just pop down to your local corner shop and buy them for a euro a pop. London's souvenir shops have long been packed full of items displaying the Union Jack and this, although a relatively new thing, is increasingly true of the Spanish flag on mugs and T-shirts along with the Osborne bull in tourist shops in Spain. To the right degree the depoliticisation of the national flag and a measured show of pride in where you come from can only be a good thing. After all, it's only football. So, I suppose, if you can't beat them, join them. For the next World Cup, which Spain have already qualified for as champions, get yourself a one-euro Spanish flag and a set of face paints for fifty cents, although you should remember it might be best to wait to see if they get through the group stage first. I mean, in the unlikely event that they don’t do so well next time, which self-respecting Valencian would want to be associated with a bunch of losers from Barça and Madrid? And how come they didn’t pick Soldado?

VALENCIA MUSIC

EMMA GET WILD

to get the balance of American, British, folk and rock just right.”

EMMA GET WILD When you go to an Emma Get Wild concert, you never know what you are going to get; a stripped down and unplugged version of the band perfect for soaking up the stunning vocals and guitar arrangements, the fuller sounds of their many instruments (ukuleles, banjos, mandolins) or a sixpiece band rocking out with their amps on 11. Though a well-established band in the Valencia music scene, only three members are local – Salva Fito and Àlex Badía on guitars and vocals and Santi Serrano on drums. Lead singer Isabel Castro was born and raised in London and bass player Scott Devore comes from Iowa in the U.S.

Playing in Valencia has its ups and downs, however: “It used to be really difficult to play live in this city, the licensing laws are so punitive that few venues would risk the fines, but there’s been a real upsurge recently, with restaurants, cafes, bookshops, even hairdressers all taking the plunge.” Most of their recent performances were under an initiative called ‘The Secret Corner’, a spin-off from the name of the new album, Dark Stories from the Secret Corner. The idea, developed by the production company Barret Films, involved 11 secret gigs in undisclosed venues throughout the city. Potential spectators were asked to subscribe and invitations were received via mobile phone and e-mail a few hours before the event.

With a decade of experience under their belt, they have toured Spain and Portugal and have released three albums, yet they never miss an opportunity to play small local venues; they are one of the hardestworking bands in the city, with almost 30 gigs under their belt so far this year.

“It was hugely successful, sponsorship by the local beer company Tyris meant that we could offer subscribers free gifts like a free beer or a CD when they attended. And it definitely worked, some ardent followers turned up for all 11 shows, it just goes to show that by being creative with event planning you can create a really lively music scene in Valencia!”

Lead singer Isabel Castro emphasizes how important playing live is: “For me, it is definitely the best part of being in a band, regardless of the size of the venue or how many people turn up, the potential is always there to give a memorable performance!”

Dark Stories from the Secret Corner comprises 11 songs tinted by a whole spectrum of folk influences from Americana to ‘70s British folk while still holding true to a pop and rock category. As Salva states, “the spectrum of tastes within the band are very wide, and it’s taken us a good while

This is evident in the songs; there are lighthearted, country-influenced songs such as “Know My Name” and “Ho Ho Lucas” but also darker, more complex tracks such as “Armageddon”, “Little Things” and “Mice on Ice” which demonstrate more Fairport Convention leanings. Isabel has her clear favourites: “We are very comfortable with the musicians that we are playing with now, and this has made us dare to be ambitious. The darker, more psychedelic songs are testament to how confident we are and I definitely prefer performing them, I don’t think we were brave enough to compose in this way before.” For Salva, the challenge was in developing his skills as a producer. “Having facilities to record at home gave us the luxury of time, something else we’d never really had before. It was great to layer track after track and give the songs a much fuller sound”. Something which is more than evident in the guitar-fuelled “Mideast” and “Sweet Unrest”, songs which confirm that the album has some strong rock leanings. Emma Get Wild will be performing on 7 July in the SERARTE festival held in the City of Arts and Sciences and then will be taking a well-earned break over the summer. However, they will be back in September and if this year has been anything to go by, probably playing in a venue very near you! LA TOMATINA & COOL DOWN GAZPACHO! By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Summer is here and some of you will be escaping for cooler climes. However, for the faithful who remain, beware! The heat is on and this can cause unusual outbursts of behaviour. Allegedly, such an outburst did occur in about 1945 in the small and sleepy town of Buñol when a few men, possibly a little over-frisky after one too many morning espressos, rudely interrupted a carnival procession. A fight ensued, a vegetable stall was raided and the contents of a crate of tomatoes were splattered over the town and so the foundations of the Tomatina festival were laid. Now firmly on the hit list of many international travellers, the rioters’ numbers have swelled to a staggering 40,000, making the Tomatina possibly Europe’s quirkiest and most masochistic of festivals. If you want to get closer to humanity, the date to head to Buñol is the last Wednesday in August. With usual temperatures soaring into the 40s, the aroma of warming tomatoes is perhaps the most pleasant thing about the day. Fresh, clean white shirts quickly turn to salmon pink and these are suddenly cast off and hurled in the air to land with a thwack in your abnormally, owing to the strange position of your neck, upturned face…ripe tomato trickles down your hair into your eyes, nose, ears and other parts. The benefit is you can get into all sorts of postures you may have been striving for in your yoga class with all sorts of strangers. Afterwards, your hair and skin will feel soft from the acid exfoliation action of the tomato juice and you will feel pretty elated that you have survived the experience without being crushed like your tomato missiles. As you may have gathered, unless abducted by aliens, I won’t be going to la Tomatina this year! I would rather recreate that T-shirt colour at home

Watermelon Gazpacho Ingredients • 1/4 red pepper (finely chopped) • 1/2 watermelon (juiced and certainly de-pipped) • 1 dessertspoon fresh mint leaves (plus a few more for the garnish) • Juice of 2 limes • 1 green chilli (finely chopped) • 1 clove garlic (finely chopped) • 1 cm finely grated ginger (or juice with watermelon if you have blender) • 1 Spanish white onion (the less pungent kind that doesn’t make your eyes stream and make everyone avoid you for the next day) • 2 small cucumbers (peeled and chopped) • 1 handful chopped coriander leaves • Splash of Thai fish sauce (optional)

with salmorejo, a delicious chilled soup easily made with ripe tomatoes, grated bread, olive oil, salt and vinegar and a small amount of garlic, blended together, cooled and served with chopped boiled egg and jamón serrano. Or better still, to avoid any similar future outbursts developing, try La Ola Fresca’s super cooling watermelon gazpacho! Preparation In a Magimix juice blender, blend the watermelon (de-pipped) and mint together. Retain some mint leaves for the garnish. Juice the limes. Finely chop the chilli, garlic and grate the ginger and mix into the juice. Roughly chop the cucumber, red pepper, white salad onion and coriander (stalks and leaves). RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

MARIA MANDILES Have you noticed how sometimes your social life becomes so busy you have no idea how you are going to survive it? I say sometimes, what I really mean in our case is that it is a rare occurrence, so when it happens, it's a bit of a shock. You nearly didn’t get a restaurant review this month – everything was conspiring against us. Football, weather, fire, unexpected visitors, double bookings and more. We eventually booked for Saturday night at 22.00h as we were going to see Jason Webster present his new Max Cámara crime novel, A Death in Valencia (good book, by the way!) and we finally arrived at our table on the terraza at María Mandiles at 22.00h on a sweltering night. We ordered an excellent and perfectly chilled Ribera del Duero from an interesting wine and cocktail list and were soon enjoying our first course (Before you reach for your pen to write in telling us that red wine should not be served cold, the wine was chilled, not cold. On a night when the temperature was still in the high 20s, the last thing you need is a wine at the same temperature!). This is very much a menu of tapas and dishes to share. We began with two montaditos, rounds of toast, one with Brie and caramelised onion, the other jamón serrano on grated tomato (pan Catalan) and oregano. No sooner had we polished these delicious little starters we were served with a large quesadilla (a sort of crepe made with tortilla, rather than pancake), stuffed with bacon and a leek puree, and it was really very good. Next came María Mandiles' version of fondue,

an earthenware platter of cooked, impossibly tender cubes of steak, crispy chunks of herby bread, fried potatoes and tiny button mushrooms, all there to dip into a pot of hot melted cheese with wooden sticks. It was terribly hot, as I have already said, so we stopped with the main courses and moved on to a light and creamy and ohso-sweet tiramisu. María Mandiles is on the Plaza del Carmen, though its actual address is a calle (see below). It is on the ground floor with an all-glass frontage that more than lets you view a pretty interior with dark red walls, blond wood and white furniture and lots of patchwork everywhere. It is very good value and the service is friendly and efficient. It's a nice place just to have a drink and a tapa, too. Carlos, the owner, explained the theory behind all the patchwork and, indeed, the name. A couple of generations back, the population was a lot poorer than today and buying a length of fabric was not always affordable. But remnants were cheap and so patchwork was born, most women were adept at the craft and it soon became an art and quite fashionable. Most women in those days had the name María, (María Jesús, or María del Carmen are examples) and the abuelas (grandmas) would always wear mandiles (aprons) around the house. They would often change to go and do the daily shop at the local market, but were often too busy to remember to change or remove their aprons, and the market traders would cry, “Here comes María Mandiles!” Carlos’ own mother made the patchwork panels that adorn the walls and the waitresses wear patchwork aprons – I forgot to ask if ours was a María. NERO’S FIDDLE President Rajoy enjoys the Euro 2012 football final while Valencia burns...

This June was one of the hottest on record, and on one of the hottest days at the end of said month it began to snow in Valencia. The sky was strangely overcast yet the heat oppressive, and as I travelled around the city the little white flakes were fluttering down all around. As I stopped for a drink on a terrace, I inspected the strange precipitation falling on the table more closely and saw the veins of leaves in them. These were not snowflakes; it was ash from a massive forest fire that had begun 40 km away near a nuclear power plant. When I arrived home, I checked the Internet and saw satellite images of the gigantic plume of smoke emanating southwest of Valencia and casting a reddish shadow over the city. But the thing that amazed me about this tragic environmental disaster was the citizens’ reaction to it. A few moaned about the ash on their cars, others complained they couldn’t go to sunbathe on the beach (the sun was by now a faint pinkish ball choked out by a billowing column several miles across). But the big topic on everyone’s tongue was the Euro Cup football final. As towns ever nearer to the city were being evacuated, people in the city itself continued their lives unfazed, enraptured by the possibility of 11 compatriots winning another sporting trophy. And suddenly the penny dropped – after well Article © 2012 24/7 Valencia

over a decade in this city and two in Spain, I finally understood something that has always perplexed and sometimes irritated me about Mediterranean peoples. If you have read this far, I presume you are one of the educated and informed minority in this city, in which case you may think that the title of this article is an inaccurate myth – that Nero was nonchalantly playing his lyre as Rome burned. However, the fiddle I’m referring to in the title is another one – the belief that the emperor began the fire himself in order to clear grounds for a new palatial complex. Several months before the Dantesque fire began to sweep through this region, the Valencia regional government made moves to change the law regarding land devastated by forest fires. Originally, the law stated that land could not be built upon for 30 years after a fire. The intention of this older law was to stop speculators taking advantage of fires to make a huge profit by intentionally burning land they had bought on the cheap, a practice many suspect to have been rife in the Aznar years, particularly in this region. (Aznar, a former president of Spain, changed the law to make it far easier to build on land classified as agricultural beforehand, thus feeding the gigantic property and credit bubble that has led Spain to be far more shafted and unprepared for the global recession than most developed countries).

Over the last two decades, Valencia has become rather synonymous with political corruption in Spain amid a generalized, growing belief that the judicial system is much politicized (many of the country’s most important judges began their careers under Franco). The region’s leaders are constantly in the news and the courts for all the wrong reasons (continual accusations of massive embezzlement of public money and influence peddling), and though no charges ever seem to stick, the evidence of misuse of public money is there for all to see: an airport with no planes, outlandish buildings with overshot budgets, an inexplicable and expensive Formula 1 circuit that causes havoc for months every summer, unfinished or unused government buildings and projects, etc. A plan for fire prevention has been pending approval since 2007, but the regional government hasn’t wanted to cough up the forecast yearly budget of 95 million euros this would require (to compare: two days of Formula 1 in the city costs 300 million euros). And yet the regional government continues to win landslide elections consistently, which is something that has always baffled me – until now. As I write this article, dusk is falling and with it the ash from what is perhaps the most terrible environmental disaster ever to strike this region (there are now three fires raging as I write). Meanwhile, my neighbours are cheering and letting off fireworks for the goals scored by 11 young millionaires thousands of miles away. Even the regional public TV is giving plenty of time to the big football match. As the sun sinks like a blood orange screened by the smoke, the Nero complex of Mediterranean peoples has suddenly become clearer than ever to me. Prince Felipe made a speech today, giving encouraging words about the Euro Cup final, with not a word about the fact that the Valencia province could become mostly parched desert over the next few days. As I write, the president of the nation is on TV, sitting in the football stadium and cheering them on (meanwhile, Obama is visiting Colorado in the aftermath of a much smaller fire).

COMMENT

Ironically, he may be doing so precisely to earn public support in a country where politicians are expected to have the party animal gene. I remember the Mediterranean Euro-parliamentarians getting up and dancing like an ungainly pack of morons, to the incredulity of their northern European colleagues in the Parliament, when Juanes played a song there, knowing full well that their voters back home expect this behaviour of them if they are not to be viewed as nerds. On the Internet, I can also see that the Spanish media is far more interested in the football match than the fires. In all countries there are the kinds of people who only worry about fires when it is their own house burning down or that of someone dear, but it seems to me now that in Spain this attitude is more socially and nationally ingrained. Many in Spain talk of civil rights in the first person and civil duties in the third. Here’s another example. Once a week, there is a market on my street that leaves the road so full of rubbish that you literally have to wade through it up to your knees. While doing just that recently, I mentioned this to one of the street vendors who had just spent hours nonchalantly throwing cardboard boxes and plastic wrapping from his stall onto the road, ignoring the large container bin right next to him. He replied completely innocently, “Yes, they should send more street cleaners,” shaking his head in disgust at ‘them’.

sparks in a natural park,” but “Others have the duty to protect the forest against fires,” as if the right and the duty were unrelated. It is now clear that the Spanish government’s most unpopular decisions such as the European bailout and price hikes for medicine have been taken to coincide with the Euro Cup. This is perhaps no surprise, but the level to which a few football matches can blind people to their dreadful reality has now reached a point of self-delusion and mass hypnosis I could never have suspected. A Valencian friend of mine recently tried to convince me that Spain needs something to lift its spirits in these grim economic times, so that taking a big interest in the soccer tournament is no bad thing. I conceded the point, but this was before the apocalyptic fires began to rage through the region. I now realise that there is a time for partying and a time for more serious matters, and that the famous Mediterranean fiesta is in fact seen by many natives as a necessary diversion from their crude reality, a way of convincing themselves that everything is fine while Rome burns. A few corrupt, ignorant fascists are no real threat to democracy – the real threat comes when the majority of people allow

them to govern. And panem et circenses is a policy far easier for governments to apply in a country where the word fiesta is seen as both a people’s right and a government’s duty, whether this means goading bulls around a village or having Formula 1 cars roar around a city. The match has now just finished as I write; the massive forest fires have not. The smell of forests burning all around the city is now being masked by that of gunpowder as people set off fireworks and cheer in the street. But tomorrow and for years to come it will be the smell of scorched earth that prevails in Valencia, both literally and figuratively. We will need far more fiestas and fireworks to mask the rising stench. And so we will keep paying, cheering and voting for the fiddlers. El Gazza

Perhaps this attitude exists because the change from dictatorship to democracy was so recent here and involved the fascists themselves who were never defeated, with the result that a certain level of understanding as to how democracy works on a daily, social basis has yet to be taken on board. While many people in Spain are quick to say “I have the right,” (even when, in fact, this is not even true), seldom does one hear people say, “They (others) have the right”. And vice versa, with the word “duty” replacing “right”. VALENCIA WORLD and Montjuic Barcelona, respectively. Their younger brother George, who now lives in Waterloo, Canada, encouraged me to investigate. Local Spanish authorities and media also took an interest, and the ceremony at Cervera was presided over by the mayor as well as local press, and I was invited to explain the story briefly and read in English and Catalan the traditional tribute to the fallen by Laurence Binyon:

BOB YAREHAM What brought to you Valencia and has it changed much since 1981? I arrived in Valencia in 1981, after two years in Italy and a summer in Yugoslavia pursuing the most beautiful woman I’d ever met. Having learned how to pronounce her name, I made her my wife, despite her objections. We now have three Spanglish sons and are living happily ever after. When I came to Spain, democracy was still a debatable idea, people were much shorter and practically no English teacher was legal due to pre-EU protectionism. I actually had to bribe a civil servant (5,000 pesetas) to get married at the time. In the 30-plus years that I’ve been here, I have witnessed the enthusiasm of a new democracy turn into cynicism and despondency, largely due to the emergence of a political class of parasites and selfseekers. Tell us about your travels around Spain. For many years I have travelled Spain researching old battlefields, Commonwealth War Graves sites (there are 19 in Spain) and locations where more than 600 English language films have been made. But the most moving experience for me was when I participated in a remembrance service after researching two CWGC sites in Catalonia. John and Charles Hill, who both died in Catalonia in May 1941, are buried in the municipal cemeteries of Cervera, Lleida,

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.” Describe a typical working day. A good bowel movement is usually the highlight. It mostly goes downhill from then on. Seriously, I earn my living as an English teacher and my typical day consists of teaching as many classes as I can (I’m selfemployed) and then washing up, making meals, shopping, cleaning, satisfying my wife and trying to convince my sons that they should study, even though, as they quite rightly point out, it would be a lot easier to be a politician or banker or participate in Big Brother. At night I lie awake and contemplate the crisis of values that we are experiencing in the 21st century. Tell us about your books. I have published two paper books through publishers, and found it a frustrating, pointless exercise, where non-writers try to tell you how to write, but very slowly. Now with Kindle / Amazon e-books, anybody can publish a book, literally in 20 minutes, and then the people decide what the people want. English Expects is a series of essays about etymology and misogyny, the follow-up to English Beauty, which nobody bought, either, whereas Classical Classwork seeks to promote the use of classical music in the TEFL classroom. Lemmings spring to mind. Death and Glory details my experiences trudging across the battlefields and cemeteries of northern Europe and Spain, whereas VIPs: Valencian International People is a profile of my 100 favourite

Valencians (living and dead, totally ignoring the seat-warming parasites who appear in the newspapers every day). You can find my books by typing in my name at Amazon. I have also published a book called English Beauty, a compilation of my columns for Costa Blanca News and a methodology book about using scenes from films in the TEFL classroom that somebody had the brilliant idea to publish in German, a language I don’t speak. What is the ‘Silver Screen’ project? www.silver-screen-spain.com is an attempt to exploit the emerging trend of set-jetting, and to highlight some of the fascinating locations where more than 600 English language films have been made. It is also a research and educational project, encouraging students to speak to their parents and grandparents about some of the films that were revolutionary experiences for thousands of Spaniards suffering in post-war Spain. For example, when David Niven made Around the World in 80 Days, the bullfight scene shot at Chinchón employed 15,000 local people, in other words, everybody for miles around. For some years now I have used my holidays to travel the country visiting these locations and meeting people who appeared as extras; it keeps me off the beach, where I would only embarrass myself. Forty years of Franco made Spain a very dull country, and these films had a revolutionary effect on many small villages, where nothing much had happened before, and often since. Katherine Hepburn spent a summer making The Trojan Women in the tiny village of Atienza in Guadalajara, Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn transformed Artajona in Navarra into Nottingham in Robin and Marian. The villagers of Candilichera, Soria, couldn’t believe their luck when MGM offered to pay them the two years’ harvest to use their land for filming the scenes at Varykino in Doctor Zhivago. Mind you, the money wasn’t spread evenly, and on visiting the village some inhabitants remembered that while some landowners were able to buy a flat in Soria with the money, others got nothing. WOMAN

I am not usually one for a serious rant on these pages, most of the regular readers will know that I am more than happy to wax lyrical about shoes, clothes, partying, concerts, food, frivolities and my general mishaps and misfortunes, but as this magazine goes to press, there is a very serious issue affecting our beautiful Valencia Community and it is breaking my heart. It is now the 3rd of July as I write my column and I can't help but address the raging forest fires that are still burning in the hills above the City and have already destroyed over 50,000 hectares of land, including homes and vast expanses of vineyards and orange groves. Shockingly enough, the International Press has barely given the situation any coverage at all, preferring to lend their column inches to the Spanish victory in the Euro 2012 final. I by no means wish to undermine this piece of news, it is obviously a huge triumph not just for Spanish football but also for Spain as a country, and it is a relief for the population to have something else to concentrate on other than unemployment, debt and depression, to come together and enjoy watching Spain's strongest team ever play their way to the final and regain a little bit of their dignity lost in the past few years during the recession. However, it would have been nice for just one of the players to send their regards and well wishes to Valencia after the match. Just sayin'.

in the world that we are planning, and planning far ahead at that! Eek!

Poor Iniesta has been shown up all over the social networks as a rumour spread that he was to donate his €300,000 cash prize to the families that had lost their homes – I am sure that was an embarrassing 'promise' to have to 'take back'... I am sure his PR were having a meltdown. “No, I don't know where that came from...,” he mumbled on his return to Spain with very shifty eyes indeed. Not wanting to depress the pants off you all, dear readers, as usual I say ciao for now for the Summer. Unfortunately, I have been a bit of an idiot and taken my holidays super early in the season so my Summer is essentially, well, over! I will be working, still at The Bank (got to add in the still, and a Thank You to someone up there, too, in this current climate – knocking wood as I mention I even have a job!!) as you know, all the way through July and August, unlike most people I know, who have wisely taken a fortnight off during the hotter months of the year. Luckily for me, the days are long and I don't leave the office too late, so a few weekend escapades may be on the cards over the coming weeks. I haven't been anywhere exotic on my vay-kays this time, I'm saving my pennies for a big trip FAR FAR AWAY at the end of year, but I'll keep you posted on that subject when we're back in September. I can let you know that I am So So Excited it may possibly be the best girlie holiday

I stuck around VLC, saw some Formula 1 buddies over for the race, cheered for Alonso with the best of them (though I have The Biggest Crush on Button imaginable, and I can assure you, up close he is more of a dish than you can ever imagine) watched some football in noisy, sweaty and testosterone-infused bars, and made the most of the sweltering days and breezy evenings. I became such a beach bum I think I may be getting some serious post-holiday blues back at my desk. I have enjoyed the beach so, so much, I can't help thinking sometimes that we live in one the best cities in the world – not many can boast a coastline so clean and so vast, pebble-free and mostly quiet, especially just over the dunes between the Albufera – that lovely peaceful lake and the stretch of white sand that is La Devesa and the like around El Saler. I am now in dire need of a good beach read, having devoured four books in two weeks, confusing myself immensely as I skipped from First World War London in one book to Second World War Germany in the next, but it’s nice sometimes to feel a bit more knowledgeable about the not-sodistant past, is it not? Even if it is fiction... I now need to get one of those light, aluminium folding chairs so I can read my novels without getting cramp in my elbows. There is no comfortable position to lie, book in hand, on a towel. There really isn't. I am now tanned enough anyway – don't worry, I always wear factor 50 – to look suitably festival-y for the season in my July sales purchases. Yes, I am one of those crazy shoppers who likes to go on the first day the -50% signs come up, and this year it was well worth it. I am kitted out and ready for whatever July and August have to bring. Even if it is after work and on the weekends, but I am certainly not complaining, me! Happy Summer, friends and see you ever so soon! Anita Darling If you feel you'd like to volunteer to help with the aftermath of the fires that have affected Cortes del Pallás and Andilla areas, please – do not hesitate to give the Police a ring on this hotline: 902 222 292 to find out how you can help.
