ISSUE 140 SEPTEMBER 12

Spain ain’t what it used to be. This is a country in the midst of its worst economic crisis in living memory. Then again, everything is relative. Just ask an old age Spanish pensioner who lived through the Spanish Civil War and then the Franco dictatorship… and they’ll tell you about real hardship. The somewhat mollycoddled ‘Western Youth’ of today with their iPhones, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, American sports trainers & extended leisure time had it pretty easy compared to previous generations…until the world economic crisis came along. With unemployment rising and cuts in health and education, España is no longer a fairly easy place to live. Plenty of people once based here, both young and old, are leaving Spain for fresher pastures… On the positive side, even the politicians can’t tax the sunshine and the good weather is just one of the reasons that this hidden jewel of a city has been attracting an increasing number of tourists over the last few years. All the statistics show an impressive rise in tourism with more and more airlines flying into Valencia from all around Western Europe, the U.S.A, and even Russia. Over the last decade, there has been a huge increase in cruise ship travellers stopping to visit Valencia and there is a continual growth of expats buying property in Valencia region. Thankfully, despite its increasingly cosmopolitan outlook, Valencia still remains an authentically Spanish city.

Rómulo

Bioparc – A Better Home for Rómulo Rómulo the white rhino probably best epitomizes what Valencia's state-of-theart, spacious, ‘environmentally aware’ zoo (or to give it its official name, the Bioparc) is all about. Rómulo, who was born in a safari park in the UK, worked for a few years in a circus and spent most of his 33 years in an 18-metre diameter cage in the old Valencia zoo in the Viveros Gardens. This was a sad, decrepit, now defunct place where distraught, half-crazed animals were kept in tiny, bare, barred cages. Rómulo was traumatised by the experience and now suffers from stereotypy, which means that although he now has a large open area to roam around in the Bioparc and can interact with other rhinos, he still walks in a constant 18-metre circle. Despite attempts to coax him out of it by changing the position of the things around him and using other stimulants, Bioparc director Miguel Casares admits that there is very little chance of him ever being completely cured. When you see how relatively happy and healthy the other animals in the park look, Rómulo's sad story shows that if you are going to have zoos, places like the Bioparc are definitely the way forward.

Built as part of the Cabecera Park development at the Mislata end of the Turia riverbed, the Bioparc opened in 2008. It is a new generation zoo where the idea was to move away completely from the bad old days of the Viveros, embracing the philosophy of ‘zoo-immersion’ in line with other developments around the world like Orlando Animal World and the Singapore Zoo. The idea has been to create large spaces for the animals, which represent different African environments using clever design and indigenous plants and trees which recreate their natural habitat as much as possible by mixing animals which would naturally cohabitate in the wild. Avoiding mixing natural predators with their prey, of course, the lions and leopards each get their own area. All of which means the animals are happier and healthier and we get to feel that we are experiencing something approaching what seeing these animals in the wild would be like and visiting their environment rather than them becoming part of ours. This is still a zoo, however, and all the issues about keeping wild animals in captivity for our enjoyment remain, but

in terms of the welfare of these animals, it is clearly a vast improvement on what went before and the commitment of the park to wildlife protection means that part of the ticket price goes to worldwide animal conservation. For the most part, the feeling as you are walking around is that the animals have all the space and you are just getting the chance to briefly observe them and enjoy them without intruding too much. You can have a beer on the restaurant terrace looking out on zebras and exotic birds which are completely unbothered by your presence to the point that they don't seem to even realise you are there. The park, which stretches over 100,000 square metres and has more than 4,000 animals of 250 different species, is dedicated entirely to Africa, divided into different areas and habitats. Areas concentrating on Asia and the Americas are planned but, given the present economic climate, are unlikely to appear in the near future. The Madagascar zone, like the island itself, is separated off from the rest of the park. It is the only part of the park where you walk amongst the animals themselves, lemurs running and jumping around you as you wander Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

along the path which winds through the enclosure. The Equatorial Africa zone in which you walk through what looks like a huge dark tree trunk has crocodiles, tortoises and boas. The Niger Delta area has hippos, mandrill baboons, otters and ducks living together amongst dark sand pools and indigenous trees. There is an area dedicated to the green mountain forests of Ethiopia with fierce-looking leopards and, in a separate enclosure, chimpanzees and cranes and another area representing the valleys of the Congo with its buffalos and pelicans, and gorillas who sit and look at you disinterestedly through the glass. The Kitum Cave area (named after the famous caves in Kenya partially ‘mined’ out of the rock by elephants in search of salt) allows you to observe the animals of the Great Lakes of Africa – its hippos, Nile crocodiles, fish and turtles – from above and below the water. There is a huge, dusty elephant area with tall rock faces and man-made baobab trees and a pool where the elephants swim, which can be quite spectacular if they happen to fancy a dip while you are there. Meerkats (surely everyone's favourite), mongooses and porcupines each also have their own enclosure. The largest area of the park is dedicated to the savannah with its giraffes, zebras,

rhinos and antelopes all roaming together and, up above and separated by huge rocks, the lions. The savannah area is at the centre of the park and you can walk all the way around it, the path leading you from ground level where the restaurant is situated to up above at the level of the lions, where you can look down at the giraffes who come up close to get to the grass at the top of their enclosure. Despite all this, the park has never achieved the number of visitors it originally hoped for when it was built, 16 million euros over budget, in those devil-may-care days before the Valencia regional government went bankrupt. Initially, in 2008, the park expected 650,000 visitors a year, which would rise to one million in successive years. The reality is that there have never been more than 470,000 in any one year and, with the present recession, they don't expect to reach 600,000 a year until 2015. Ticket prices are high for a one-off visit (23 euros for an individual ticket and around 75 euros for a family of four), which has

put off some tourists. But if you live in the city, it’s well worth getting an annual pass which works out to only slightly more than the one-off price by allowing you to come and go as you please to a place which definitely merits repeat visits (although, annoyingly, you can't use your passes on certain popular days). The animal rights group Defensa Animal describes the park as “the biggest animal prison in Europe”. They may have a point, but Rómulo the rhino is expected to live another 40 years and though he may well never see his natural habitat of Africa, his quality of life has been raised immeasurably. This is a huge, respectful and more dignified improvement on what went before and the philosophy of the Bioparc means that Valencia has a zoo which puts many similar institutions to shame.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE STONE ROSES

Mani in Valencia

‛24/7 V a the towlencia out on n with Mani’

EXCLUSIVE! THE STONE ROSES INTERVIEW It’s been a long, strange trip. 24/7 Valencia magazine’s relationship with the Stone Roses stretches back to 1989, when resident 24/7 Valencia photographer Kaiko witnessed and shot photos at their legendary gig at the Barraca club in Sueca in the Valencia region. Between 2002 and up to the present day, 24/7 Valencia editor Will McCarthy has been fortunate to have hung out a fair bit with Mani and Ian Brown, too, in the city of Valencia or at the FIB festival. Indeed, when Mani DJ’ed in the city of Valencia in 2006, he met the editor of 24/7 Valencia at the bar of El Loco and there began a musical conversation/ interview/surreal night out over a good few beers and spirits that began at 10.00 pm at El Loco and included a walk around the Juan Llorens district, a drive through the old centre, and ended around 6.00 am in Latex Club! Contrary to the Stones Roses’ public image of cool detachment, the 24/7 Valencia editor found Mani to be genuinely friendly and approachable. He was open to the point of being garrulous, very witty, and a right

character with endless anecdotes – including unprintable information about the secret drug habits of a talented “Notting Hill” actor – as well as a neverending stream of surreal dialogue including stuff about backstage frozen chickens, meeting Mick Jagger in Benidorm and “camel toes”.

people. A little crazy, yes, but in a good way. A proper rock ’n’ roller…

As the drink and the conversation was flowing while discussing favourite bands with Mani like Primal Scream, the Byrds, Love, Oasis and Shack, it was due to Mani’s friendly insistence to this ‛24/7 Valencia’ editor – “You really know your music…stay out with me, man” – that we made a whole night of pleasantly painting the town red in Valencia.

24/7 Valencia: musician…

This was one of the world’s best bass players happy to spend hours and hours in Valencia with ordinary people like me or you, people who love music, people who like to have a good time and people he can connect with. After clubbing all night and talking music and more, Mani left the 24/7 Valencia team at the club at dawn with the biggest bear hug humanly possible before returning to his wife at the hotel. A surprisingly warm, generous person and a real man of the

We were high as kites on skunk marijuana, climbing up the walls! It must be a jinx ‘cos Arthur Lee has since died. What are your memories of playing in Valencia in 1989? FOOD

Foods to Get Us Back in the Swing By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca The sun may still be shining but it’s back to school and back to reality, which can mean a sudden dose of the blues. So instead of reaching for the Prozac, keep hold of that holiday euphoria with natural endorphinreleasing foods. Most fruits and vegetables contain the necessaries to give you that pick-me-up, and eating what is in season and produced locally will maximise those benefits. As we transfer from August to September, we should have the last of the peach season plus juicy melons, figs, apples and plums to brighten our lives. A freshly squeezed juice or smoothie of peach and melon with a touch of fresh ginger should get you skipping, especially if you add a little Spirulina to help combat fatigue and anxiety (available in most natural health food stores such as Ecorganic on Av. Blasco Ibáñez). To re-boost your potassium and zinc levels try a breakfast of figs, chopped banana with walnuts and a little honey; and who could be downhearted when presented with a plate of chopped figs and soft goat’s cheese, topped with cracked black pepper? Both in Indian and Chinese traditional medicine, much attention is placed on the diet and the effects on the moods of eating different types of food. We all know that certain foods can leave us screaming for something sweet or stodgy and swinging up and down the mood pendulum of highs and lows. So we are looking for something that isn’t boring and bland, but zesty on the taste buds, that doesn’t leave you climbing the walls for more carbohydrates or stodged up for a month of Sundays! Our September recipe isn’t a crowd dazzler, with lashings of butter and other indulgences but a balanced combination, so that after eating it you’re not on a sugar high anxiety or carbohydrate slump. With quinoa, red peppers, courgettes, aubergines, tamari, lemon and ginger, it’s a recipe to get your feet back on the ground, possibly just a little bit smiley, ready to start again afresh.

Aubergine and Quinoa Bake (serves 4) • 4 tablespoons sesame seed oil • 200 gm quinoa (washed) • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds • 1 teaspoon vegetable stock • 1 large red pepper (cored, seeded and chopped) • 2 medium aubergines (sliced lengthways, 1 cm thick) • 2 medium to small courgettes or 1 large (grated) • Juice of 1 lemon • 125 ml water • 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce • 1 inch grated fresh ginger • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds • 1 dessertspoon chopped parsley • 1 oven baking dish

should be tender, but still nutty in texture (drain surplus water if necessary). Meanwhile cut the aubergines into slices approximately 1cm thick. Heat the sesame oil in a grill pan and cook until they are brown on both sides. Remove from the pan (reserving the pan for later use) and place in the ovenproof dish. Combine the water, lemon juice, tamari and freshly grated ginger, pour the mix over the aubergines. Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes (or until most of the liquid has been absorbed, turning the slices midway). Chop the red peppers and cook in the same pan with the remains of the sesame oil. Mix the quinoa and grated courgette to the peppers and add a sprinkling of sesame seeds. Place over the top of the aubergines and return to the oven to bake for a further 5 to 10 minutes. Serve hot or chilled, garnished with parsley sprigs. Get Back in the Swing with La Ola Fresca in September:

Quinoa, pronounced “keen-wah”, despite appearances is a seed, not a grain. It has a slightly nutty flavour and interesting texture that makes it quite delicious enough to eat on its own lightly seasoned with lemon or olive oil. It has a list of health benefits far too lengthy to go into here but suffice to say that, as opposed to many grains, it contains a full house of amino acids so it can serve as a complete protein source. Combined with the high level of nutrients, this makes it an excellent choice for vegetarians. However, if the carnivore in you will not be appeased, the recipe below can be combined very well with lamb chops or even sausages! Quinoa is available from all health-food stores and you can also buy it at La Ola Fresca. Preparation: Heat oven to 180C / 350F / Gas mark 4 Wash the quinoa and place in a pan of roughly double the volume of water, a teaspoon of cumin seeds and one teaspoon of vegetable stock. Bring to the boil and cook for about 15 minutes. They are ready when the seeds have just unravelled. They

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

GUERNICA I love the summer in Valencia; I am one of only a few of our friends who stay around throughout the hotter months. It is hot, and there is no doubt that this was the hottest summer I have experienced in my years here, but if you stay here during August, there is so much that makes it worthwhile. The traffic is less frantic and parking is, quite frankly, a joy. Then there is summer food and drink, everything is so fresh and delicious, it barely needs to be cooked – gorgeous fruit and vegetables, the freshest of fish and great meats and sausages, all for the eating and drinking. Guernica, a relatively new incarnation of an old barrio bar which was once the haunt of toreros and aficionados in Ruzafa, was just such a summer treat. Rubén is the owner-chef, a fidgety, happy and wiry man buzzing with enthusiasm and boundless energy. He is from a family of cooks, his mother owned three marisquerías (seafood restaurants) and an uncle owned a restaurant in a village close to Chulilla, he has learned his trade in great restaurants and hotels around Valencia, and he just loves his food. He is within spitting distance of Ruzafa Market and his menu changes daily, governed by what is fresh and good that day. We booked a table on the terraza and were joined by our friends B and M. We were offered an aperitif but decided to go straight to a house red wine, which turned out to be an excellent Ribera del Duero (no big label, just a small denominación label at the bottom). We were given small clipboards with tonight's menu clipped to them, but told our server that we would be very happy for her and Rubén to choose our meal. She in turn told us she would

bring dishes until we felt we'd had enough. We began with Sardina ahumada y tomate confitado (smoked fillets of sardines with a tomato marmalade — all home-made), subtle and delicious and a great marriage of flavours. Next came Tomate de Perelló y Mojama de almadrava. Anyone who has spent any time in Valencia will tell you that the tomato is as important to the locals as paella and the tomato from El Perelló, a small coastal village just south of Valencia, is particularly prized. Mojama is a dried, ham-like tuna and almadrava or almadraba is the method used to catch tuna on the coast of Andalusia. It is such a wonderfully simple dish, a large tomato quartered and smothered in a great olive oil, sea salt and mojama slivers scattered on top. Next up was Carpaccio de champiñon y trufa, the freshest of raw mushrooms finely sliced and served with a walnut-flavoured olive oil and topped with shavings of truffle. Perfect. Then Rubén appeared with Abuela's croquetas, which were lovely, hammy and crispy and soft in the middle. Along the way there were several servings of good Pan con tomate, bread and grated tomato and olive oil. Our final first course was a succulent Entrecot buey brasa, a prime piece of steak, seared pink inside and served with wedges of potato and slices of ajo tierno. Simple again, but great. We had a rest whilst we chatted to Rubén and his partner, Elisa, who is a champion cocktail maker; she makes wonderful cocktails with really exotic ingredients. She decided it was no good talking about them, we should try some! She first brought us some chupitos named Golden Bitters that were her own secret recipe. We downed them as is expected but felt they were really too nice to throw back like that. Then she came out with two identical-looking cocktails, both rosecoloured and called Malvarrosa – one

without alcohol for B, who was our elected driver for the night, and one swimming in gin for D, who was not going to be driving anywhere in the next 24 hours. Rubén insisted we finish with his Abuela's tarta, not actually hers but her recipe. A chocolate and biscuit concoction that was a perfect end to a pretty perfect meal, or so we thought – there was one final surprise, an amuse-bouche that certainly amused! A dessert spoon filled with a gin jelly and sorbet. Incidentally, the old picture of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ behind the bar was from Rubén's bedroom wall as a child. SHOPPING

BritishFood.es A friendly and informative couple, José & Isabel have been working in Valencia’s central market since 1998. This is a familyrun business, with their two daughters often helping out at the weekends. Impressively, José speaks Valenciano, Spanish, English (like his daughters) as well as French, Italian and some Russian and German too! Tell us about BritishFood.es. Our objective is to cover all the necessities for British food products, and from the Commonwealth countries, in the area of Valencia and its surrounding region. Basically, we are aiming at shoppers who know these products from their own culture as well as people with an interest or natural curiosity for gastronomy that is different. Under our banner of ‘Menjars del Món’ (Foods of the World), we understood that British food was not sufficiently catered for in the city of Valencia and we initiated contact with suppliers from the Marina Alta area, basically British importers and wholesalers. What products do you currently have available? We work with an ample selection of easily recognizable brands from any British grocers, basically limiting ourselves to frozen, packed and canned products. You can find bacon, pies, sausages, condiments, flour, marmalades, teas, ales, soups, bottled or packed ethnic food and many more products Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

on our website. We also have a specialist section for cake decoration with products from Wilton, Dr. Oetker and more. 3. Where can visitors find you? We are in the Mercado Central, the gastronomic heart of the city. You can also buy our products via our website and we have a service that delivers to your door. Any plans for the future? It depends on the demand. Our plan is to establish a growing business but everything depends on the reaction of the British community in the city of Valencia and the surrounding region. We have 450 products at the moment and we plan to have 650 items by the end of the year, following our customers’ suggestions. We should also add that we have non-British clients who ask us for products that they have found whilst living or travelling in the United Kingdom. Like any specialist market in these times, we have to rigorously adapt ourselves to the demands of the client, and try to leave them satisfied and provide what they ask us for. Lastly, I would like to congratulate you for your publication ‘24/7 Valencia’, a well-researched magazine and a good read, too. Thank you for sharing our shop with your readers.

FIB 12 was special. A good few of the ‛24/7 Valencia’ team made the 50 minute trip to Benicàssim to party & enjoy a fantastic few days and nights of live bands from the past and present. Crowd numbers were down compared to FIB 11's record attendances but many in the crowd were promising to return for FIB 13…whatever the rise in IVA. 70% of the happy crowd were British & Irish! Here's hoping for more Spanish for next year's festival. Enjoy these exclusive photos by '24/7 Valencia' resident photographer Kaiko…one of Spain's most famous music photographers.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Valencia CF goalkeeper... Diego Alves

No Need to Worry Here we go again, ready or not, for another season of highs and probably mostly lows, if the first three games are anything to go by. This is Valencia’s worst start to a season for 13 years, not surprising, really, when you take into account that they have travelled away to face Real Madrid and Barcelona. Even less surprising when they had two perfectly good goals disallowed, which would have meant three more points for the unfortunate Chés. The first game of the year was away to Real Madrid and Pellegrino’s team gave the merengues as good as they got. They were aggressive, peleón and brave. The writing seemed to be on the wall for the visitors as Higuaín scored after only nine minutes but an equaliser from Jonas and some fine saves from the erratic Diego Alves kept Valencia in the game. A goal from Soldado was ruled to be offside, a

decision seen only by the linesman and Madrid fans. An away win may not have been a just overall result, but the reality is that Valencia scored two goals against Madrid’s one and only managed a draw. Next up Deportivo came to Mestalla, surely this would be the game Valencia needed to kick start their season. After two goals in the first 30 minutes by Soldado, both assisted by the ever-impressive Jonas, things could not be any easier. Some woeful defending from a corner allowed the Galicians to snatch a goal and a lifeline, which was wiped out a few minutes later when Feghouli scored a third for the home side, who went into the changing rooms 3-1 to the good at half-time. No one knows what Pellegrino said at the break, had the oranges been poisoned, had someone slipped something into their half-time cuppa? The fact is in the second half they fell to pieces, Parejo gave the ball away much too often and the central defenders for Valencia, Ricardo Costa and Victor Ruiz, committed far too many errors, one of which by Costa resulted in a red card, a penalty and an equalizing

third goal for the visitors. In the last few minutes the home team were struggling to hold on to the point. White hankies were at the ready and the team was booed off the pitch by the fans unfortunate enough to have still been there at the end. Valencia’s third encounter of the season was a simple one, away to the mighty Barça where yet again Valencia were very unlucky not to have got more from the game. Only a wonder goal from Adriano separated the two teams whilst the Chés had clear chances to score, a free header from Victor Ruiz being the most clear-cut. The centre-back also had a goal ruled out for a very dubious offside decision. The cold facts are that Valencia have two points from nine and are struggling to get going. A two week break for international football may give Pellegrino time to rethink and re-jig, but forthcoming fixtures against Celta Vigo, Mallorca and Zaragoza will show if this year’s team are capable of maintaining their position as the best of the rest, as they did under the tutelage of Unai Emery or, as many fear, will they slip

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

away under the auspices of an untried and untested manager. The two first fixtures against the mighty Bayern Munich and Lille in the Champions League will also be vital if the blanc i negres are to progress in the competition.

Soldado

It is a little too early to judge if this year’s signings are good ‘uns or bad ‘uns, as both Pereira and Cissokho are international defenders, the midfielder Guardado looks a little lost at the moment and new striker Valdez is more heart over technique. Gameiro would have been the better option but then again, he would have cost more and unfortunately money is still very hard to come by, taking into account that the club is in debt to struggling Bankia. Meanwhile, a stone’s throw from Mestalla, Levante UD are off to a decent start in their aim to maintain their Primera Liga status and then some. An opening day draw to Atlético Madrid was followed by an away defeat to Valladolid and even the most committed granota must have been a bit wary as they went 0-2 to Espanyol in their third game, but true to their philosophy they never gave up and fought back to gain an unlikely 3-2 win after a dramatic, lastgasp winner. Their upcoming opponents Malaga, Osasuna and Real Sociedad will also provide stern tests for Levante. Taking into account that this season they also have Europa League ties, starting with Helsingborgs IF and Hannover 96, which will test the strength in depth of Levante’s squad to the limit, more so after losing their top striker, Arouna Koné, to English Premiership stalwarts, Wigan Athletic. COMMENT

OUT OF AFRICA the Botswana incident, one of his sonsin-law took a royal grandson hunting underage and the lad blew a hole in his own foot. Come to think of it, the king is also unlucky with his sons-in-law.

King Juan Carlos in Africa

There is a darkly humorous expression that the Spanish sometimes use selfeffacingly to explain aspects of Spain that exasperate northern Europeans: “Africa begins at the Pyrenees”. It is a curiously paradoxical expression in that it smacks a little of racism when used, by implying that Africans can’t do things as well as Europeans, while at the same time saying that this includes the Spanish themselves (possibly the Moor in the genes). The phrase is particularly apt this year, as events linked to the continent just over the Strait of Gibraltar have been rocking Spanish society. First there was King Juan Carlos’ visit to Botswana, where he shot an elephant for fun to the tune of 18,000€ and had an accident with his dodgy hip to boot. As usual, the politically divided Spanish media saw it all completely differently. The left sympathised with Dumbo and the right with the king and his hip. Images of his Christmas speech were screened again, where he harped on in his peculiar, plummy tones like someone with a swollen tongue about how we all have to make sacrifices and nobody is immune to the recession, before going off to hunt pachyderms in Africa (as Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

one does). There was also stupor about the fact nobody seemed to know where the nation’s head of state was when he almost killed himself. While most Spaniards assumed their wise king was busy signing reams of official papers or whatever monarchs are supposed to do these days, he was in fact in deepest Africa stalking ivory through the long grass with a gammy hip. While many rural Spaniards also enjoy winding down by killing a few animals, the fact is that the bigger the game, the more expensive it is. This is why it is usually royalty or politicians that enjoy the ‘sport’. When the oil tanker Prestige was sinking off the Galician coast several years ago, the relevant ministers went off hunting, as did the region’s president, apparently switching off their mobile phones. This is the modern equivalent of what Spain’s ancient kings used to do to avoid work or battles: off to the hills of Úbeda. However, the current king doesn’t seem to be very lucky with guns. Not many foreigners know that he shot and killed his own brother in an un-witnessed accident, which is hardly ever mentioned in the media, not even after his latest accident while hunting in Africa. Just after

The other one, Iñaki, has been to court under suspicion of shady dealings using his noble image to pocket public money through a company of his. The police investigation was following up leads from another public money scandal involving the ex-president of Majorca, the same man who, as environment minister, went hunting while the Prestige sank. Clearly, when the king made his speech about belt-tightening austerity and how the law is the same for us all, he was not referring to himself or his family. The curious thing is, if he hadn’t had an accident, the Spanish would continue to be blissfully unaware of his antics. But suddenly, for perhaps the first time since the last ill-fated Spanish republic, some of the standard media have actually begun to criticize the Spanish royal family. In general, I have always found the Spanish media to be a bit soft on their leaders. Perhaps there is still a little residual Stockholm syndrome left over from the dictatorship, but the fact is that there is no Spanish answer to Jeremy Paxman or Mike Wallace. It is frustrating to see how politicians are often treated with kid gloves by Spanish journalists. Incidentally, the new government has already returned to the ridiculous propaganda of Aznar’s years in the national public media, replacing key, respected journalists with prominent right-wingers. But at last, that great taboo of the Spanish media, the royal family, has suddenly found itself in the firing line of some of the media. For perhaps the first time in history, a Spanish monarch has publicly apologised for his behaviour. Admittedly, it was only a few seconds, but that was enough to cause shock waves in half the media, while the other half published front-page photos of the king signing reams of paper with headlines like ‘Back To Work’.

COMMENT

One wonders if the idea of some Spanish media criticising royalty is just a passing fad. The judiciary is another public institution they always seem terrified of criticising. The president of the Supreme Court was recently caught spending public money on unjustified trips to Marbella; he eventually resigned with no apology. Valencia perhaps has the dubious honour of being top of the sordid list of corruption in authority. One of the latest in a sickeningly long string of cases in the region involves the governing party’s spokesperson in the regional congress (now temporarily suspended). He is caught up in sleaze involving NGO money destined for Third World aid allegedly being diverted to his circle of chums to buy houses in Valencia. Tapped phones revealed the disgustingly racist anti-black language used by these people to show their contempt for the less unfortunate people, children included, deprived of this aid. On hearing such racist expressions, I was reminded of similar cases with sports personalities, another group in Spanish society that local journalists treat like gods. Luis Aragonés, the national soccer coach who won the 2008 Euro Cup with Spain, was overheard in training using shockingly racist terms, apparently to motivate one of his players. Clearly unrepentant, he even fanned the flames of racism with disparaging comments about the British (whose press were attacking him for his behaviour). Far from demanding his resignation, the Spanish media generally backed him, insinuating that such language is all part of the game and the dressing room banter. Racist jeers from soccer fans are often ignored by Spanish TV and radio commentators. The national basketball team also had an advertising campaign for the 2008 Olympic Games in China where the entire squad made slitty eyes with their index fingers as a joke, and were surprised at the reaction from the Chinese, if not the world. There have been other cases such as white Spanish people painting themselves black to taunt Hamilton at a Formula 1 race, which didn’t faze the local media. Indeed, in all these cases they

seemed indignant about the backlash from the northern European media. Every Christmas time, local authorities also often paint a white person black to imitate wise King Balthazar to entertain (and educate) kids, apparently incapable of finding a genuine black person. Which brings us back to that curious expression. Not so long ago, Africans risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean and find work in Spain. They did the jobs few Spaniards at the time wanted to do, with a seemingly endless property boom providing wellpaid work requiring little skill. Some bosses were happy to employ them unofficially and thus cheaply, though paperless immigrants are now to be denied public health care services in a measure of dubious efficacy to combat the economic crisis. Now, however, it is the Spanish who are emigrating in search of work. Unfortunately, they are finding that skills such as languages are needed north of the Pyrenees, but ironically it is the African immigrants in Spain who have gained a better mastery of languages, having learned Spanish as well as their home countries’ European tongues. Suddenly, Spain is looking very much like the Africa some of its prominent figures seem to enjoy making fun of. Or even worse: European economists are now advising Spain to bring its wage costs down to compete with countries in the developing world that have employment and growth rates Spain can only envy. In fact, the Asian economic tigers are very much at home already in Spain, taking over many local businesses and working longer hours than the Spanish to make them viable. Then there is the Arab Spring and its overthrow of dictatorships (something that never happened in Spain), which may soon lead to thriving democratic economies and cultures with workforces hungry for the riches they see on the opposite shores of the Mediterranean. The distinctive creak of tables turning is beginning to be heard, as the imaginary border with Africa does indeed seem to be shifting northwards from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Pyrenees.

The world-famous Bankia bailout attempted to plug a black hole with Spanish public money amid government opacity in its explanations, before the EU and IMF realised much more was needed for the entire system. Spain’s president sent the Economy Minister begging north of the Pyrenees with the message, “Spain isn’t Uganda” to calm his nerves. The Ugandan president heard of this and replied: “Uganda isn’t Spain – we’re not asking the EU or IMF to rescue us.” The EU bailout coincided with the Euro Cup, when the Spanish could be relied upon to forget all their woes. But many politicians from stronger European economies are now wondering if they should be giving money to a friend with holes in his pockets, above all given the corruption seen here (Spanish corruption scandals over the years have involved EU funds). Christine Lagarde, the IMF chief, angered Greeks by saying that she felt sorrier for black African children with little access to education than for Greeks who evade tax. She certainly hit a nerve, albeit a tad hypocritically (she herself pays very little tax). Many of those who are disgusted with the somewhat culturally ingrained corruption and tax evasion in Mediterranean countries sympathise with Lagarde’s words. The Spanish must now hope that their neighbours north of the Pyrenees will treat them better than some Spanish politicians and media seem to treat poorer nationalities. If not, the only viable economic escape route may eventually be for the country to leave the euro in order to reintroduce and devaluate the peseta. And then the Spanish who joke about Africa beginning at the Pyrenees will realise this also means Europe ends there. But that, of course, will be no joke.

WOMAN

Right on cue, beginning of September and it seems to me right now that everybody is complaining about having to get back into their routine, when I've been all over MY routine like a rash since summer began and I really do not want to snap out of it! It has basically been like this, for three months: although I haven't been on holiday, I have been super creative in trying to make life feel as much like a vacation as possible. I have decorated my garden with garlands and fairy lights, play cheesy Spanish radio stations all day long, and drink all my liquids with little umbrellas in. Even if it's a mineral water. One of the unavoidable parts of my life preventing me actually being on holiday would, of course, be Work, but I have found ways to make the day feel less stressful and more FUN. Which, at the end of the day, should be our motto for everything. The first step is – and I really recommend everybody gives this one a try – coming to the realisation that Work only takes up about a third of the day, which leaves all those other hours for Me Time. Or Me and the Girls Time, or Me and Wine Time, or Me and the Girls and Wine Time, but especially for Me and Him Time! Apologies if you are married to your job and you work for what feels more like three quarters of your day and, during the fourth quarter, you sleep. I sincerely hope you love what you do! Anyway, so I've found a way to while away my working day as I will clock out time to come around so I can get outta there, getting away with minimal effort, maximum fuss all season. Looking like one is super

Mind you, it's usually winter when people say this, “Cor, you'd never know, you're not very brown, are you?” And I bite my tongue to stop myself from saying, “It has been 2 degrees for a month”…). I assured the New Zealander that by Darling standards, and on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being my average skin tone in January and 10 being me cast away on a desert island for at least a year without sun block and no shade, I am about an 8, which is certainly saying something. So I am tanned and not so flabby, which I am rather proud of.

busy and super important at all times is essential, so taking the work mobile phone out into the corridor a lot is key. I have usually, using my personal phone, arranged for a girlfriend to call me on said work phone beforehand, so am prepared when it rings to answer with a, “Mr. González! Thank you for calling me back, did you get the figures okay?” as I leave the room to actually talk about shoes/boys/“Geordie Shore”/“50 Shades of Gray”/all of the above with Lolita (or other female substitute including, but not limited to, my mother, N., M., and a girl from Orange who lives in Segorbe. True story.) for 20 minutes, whilst pacing up and down outside other people's cubicles. I have found that delegating also makes one look as though they are up to one's eyeballs. Ask a colleague kindly to photocopy a report, dropping in a remark about working from home to meet a deadline, and you'll soon have the rest of your team doing all your work for you, so you have more time to stalk your ex on Facebook and buy a full body massage at 75 % off on Groupon. So once I've pushed some papers around on my desk for eight hours (this is ironic, obviously – I only pretend to work for about five hours. I'm on a break for the other three.) I grab my holdall, strategically hidden under my desk, put my bikini on under my clothes in the office toilets, and swap my heels for Havaianas before I flip and flop out the front door. And from there, it’s either to the beach or the gym. According to a Kiwi I was chatting to at the Tomatina, and I was wearing a gleaming white T-shirt at the time, I am not very brown, “considering I live in Spain” (Is it just me or do any of you other lovely expats get this a lot too?

My girlfriends and I have not only been working out on a near-daily basis, even braving Saturday mornings at our local facilities – I heard you gasp from here – but we have also been trying out some of the classes on offer. The Gym is pretty much deserted from June to August so we have had the privilege of partaking in amazingly fun, almost-private classes for three months. Body Combat is hilarious, though I'm not entirely sure it is supposed to be. It's “Million Dollar Baby” meets Aerobics and the instructors encourage grunting and shouting, so I can air punch away all that work-related stress from my extremely busy day at the Office. Well, I feel the burn, anyway. To get me in my non-holiday holiday mood, if I'm beaching it, it’s 'til sundown. There is nothing nicer than those last few hours sprawled out on the sand, enjoying an ice-cold beer with friends. The weekends have brought more beach, and even a couple of trips away, including to music festivals FIB (Benicàssim) and Arenal (Burriana), for Bob Dylan, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, the Stone Roses, the Vaccines, Two Door Cinema Club, and more. I've body-boarded with guy pals, stalked windsurfers with my girlfriends, enjoyed delicious meals outdoors at my mum and dad's, and watched movies under the stars down at the beach and in the old riverbed. I think I have proved my ‘Pro-Routine’ case in point quite well. Luckily, while the weather forecast keeps predicting temperatures in the high 20s and 30s, I see no reason why I should start doing anything differently, so take a leaf from my book of life and put some holi- in your day. You'll thank me for it next month!

A VALENCIA STORY

No Ham, No Life... by D. Blackwell with grease from the gachas. Morgan offered him a dripping spoonful. “If I’m not gonna share a straw to drink tea, there’s no way in hell you’d get me eating pig from a vat with a shared spoon.” Then he muttered under his breath: “Barbarians!” while Morgan muttered “Twat!” under his. PART 7 (Based in Valencia, our motley crew have gone to Aragon for a festival...) Miguel was nowhere to be seen so they made for the house. Sure enough there he was, asleep in Javi’s room. They tried to coax him out but he feigned a migraine. In truth, he couldn’t bear the thought of killing an animal in public, and he was sulking over Javi bringing him. It was so barbaric. Even ensconced in Javi’s house, he had not been able to escape the screams of the pig and was feeling like glass about to shatter; Javi was a piece of shit to bring him down for this, he thought—what a sick fucking joke! They finally gave up on getting him out of the house, but Javi eventually got Miguel’s assurance that he would come out later for the concert. Miguel felt a little appeased that there would be some folk music. Now they were all in the house it only seemed logical to follow suit and get a quick snooze in, just in case. Morgan slumped back on the sofa, too small for him to lie comfortably, but familiar enough. George went to his private room, and Javi just went out on the balcony, took off his shirt and spread it under him to get the benefit of the early afternoon sun. Thus they snoozed, oblivious to the festivities for an hour or two until finally Javi was rudely awakened by something being thrown up from the street below. In his somnambulant daze, he thought it was a pig’s foot but it was just a clump of dirt from the neighbour’s garden. “Uncle Javi, wake up, you lazy old git.”

“Fuck off,” he shouted, still prostrate. “Javi, Javiiiiiiiiii,” another kid wailed, “C’mooooooooooooon ouuuuuuuut.” “RESPECT THE SIESTA, FOR GOD’S SAKE,” he bellowed, using his angry uncle voice. “Ya lazy old maaaaaaaaaaaan,” another shouted. “VIVA ESPAÑA – AND LONG LIVE THE SIESTA!” he shouted back, all the while without opening his eyes. He covered his head with his shirt but it was too late, he was awake. In a moment the strains of music began piping into the air and Javi stirred. He got up and woke the boys, one by one – leaving Miguel till last. “C’mon, brother. The music’s starting,” he said, gently shaking Miguel by the shoulders. The band was set up on a stage facing the now desolate pig pen. The crowds were swarming around the gachas pans. Each had a token piece of the ritually slaughtered pig thrown in and supplemented with some of the butcher's prime cuts. Spoons were distributed and everyone ate from the same pot. Spoons were scarce so people were continually licking them clean, and passing them on to the next salivating specimen in line, out of town solidarity. Miguel tried to keep a wide berth of the fires, concerned about the smell of smoke getting in his hair. He was particularly repelled by the sight of Morgan: all the area surrounding his mouth was thick

The band that had so enthralled Morgan earlier was playing the traditional music of the region: jotas of Aragon. Jotas were generally considered to be the abused child of Spanish folk. They had none of the mystique or passion of southern flamenco and had the added injustice of almost exclusively being performed in a traditional dress that was nothing short of silly. The men wore long white garter socks over tight pantaloons, matched with a colourful bandana that Morgan thought made them look like gay pirates. He was about to remark so to Javi before realizing that he wasn’t sure how to say ‘gay pirate’ in Spanish and decided to just point and laugh. For the women, the dress was a frilly, layered affair that – at least – hid the superfluous flesh of the grannies that seemed to enjoy dancing that kind of thing. The men and women skirted each other like ridiculous crabs in a mating dance while the various stringed instruments rattled out in tandem with the women’s pincer-like castanets. The singer was really the key figure. The style was in fact incredibly graceful and, when well executed, as impressive as any flamenco. The lyrics could be anything from bawdy limericks to historical ballads. Formixe favoured the former. During the weeks leading up to the festival the villagers had all been encouraged to write dirty ditties. These were then selected and performed by the band. A panel of ten individuals, including the mayor, were judging for the best ditty of the year.
