Blanquita Bar, Plaza Dr. Collado, 8 46001 - Valencia This is the life! Blanquita Bar is set in one of Valencia’s most atmospheric plazas in the centro histórico, with a lovely view of the old town and is great for people watching, too. It is a mere stone’s throw from La Lonja so easy to find. We keep going back, which is a good sign. The restaurant bar is open every day from 8.45 a.m. to midnight. Enjoy a mellow breakfast in the tranquil square with a croissant + juice + cappuccino for just 3.50€. From Monday to Sunday, there is a menu of the day

Liven up your Wednesday nights with la Ruta de la Tapa del Cedro The great thing about the bars around the Plaza del Cedro is that they have always had to use their ingenuity and to offer something a bit different just to attract people across the river from the more ‘established’ nightlife areas in Valencia. This recession means that small businesses are having to think outside of the box and be a little bit more creative just to survive. It's no surprise, then, that eight bars in the Cedro have come up with an innovative way of joining forces to create the weekly Wednesday night Ruta de la Tapa del Cedro or, as the English version of the official Ruta map you can pick up in any of the eight bars calls it, the Cedro Tapas Trail. Whereas the bars around here have always tried to bring you in with music (the Cedro has more than its fair share of live music venues and bars, owned by music fans, often defined by the type of music they play), now they are seeking to also entice you with the offer of a plate of culinary delights and a caña. The idea is for each of the bars to offer three different tapas each week, which don't conform to what you might consider

as traditional tapa fare. While we all love our calamares and bravas – and if that's your bag, there are three or four excellent typical tapas bars in the area which don't take part – this is about a variety of different nightspots including a disco bar and a couple of Italian restaurants offering something new and (in most cases) tasty, and actively encouraging you to move on from bar to bar to take in the whole area at the same time.

of bringing people in from other areas for quite a while now. Set around a drab municipal park, the area certainly doesn’t look much, but away from the bright lights and tourists in the city centre, there’s been a healthily diverse and inventive nightlife scene here for over twenty years and there are plenty of little gems to be discovered amongst the ‘70s housing blocks and the skinny council issue trees.

The deal is you pay 2€ at each stop on the trail, you choose one of the three tapas from the bar’s list that week and you get a glass of wine, a caña or a soft drink thrown in. Certainly a good deal for us but not a great money-spinner for the bars you might think but, as Frank Walsh of Café Infinito says, “For our regulars, it's one way we can give them something a little extra. It also gets people out on what might otherwise be a quiet Wednesday night and of course brings new people in, both to the bars themselves and to the area in general”.

Plaza del Cedro, or Ciudad Jardín as it is also known, is the area of the city between C/ Dr. Manuel Candela and C/ Músico Ginés, west to east, and Av. Blasco Ibáñez and C/ Santos Justo y Pastor, north to south. Construction in the area started in 1965 to house the large number of immigrant workers coming into the city from Albacete and Cuenca, which meant the area has always been predominantly Spanish rather than Valenciano speaking. The descendants of the manchegos and conquenses now share the area with students from the University and the Polytechnic who have played a big part in making the barrio what it is.

With bars like Café Infinito, the Plaza del Cedro has been doing a pretty good job

Before this, of course, it was all fields. The only way through the ‘huerta’ was the Camino de Algirós, which wound its way along the channel from the old Mestalla River to the sea, which was built by the Moors to irrigate the surrounding fields. The French, under Maréchal Suchet, set up camp here during the Napoleonic siege of the city, their cannons lined up along what is now C/ Dr. Manuel Candela, ready to bombard the city walls. A row of whitewashed country houses in C/ José de Orga, which dip down below modern street level, along with the Jardín de Ayora, are the only remnants of the old days of the huerta. You can take in the bars on the Ruta in any order and you are constantly bumping into other groups going in different directions. One bit of advice we heard from someone we met along the way was to avoid the more sit-down restaurant type places at their busiest time (between 21.30h and 22.30h). In the majority of places you are served quickly and with good cheer (the tapas are ready and waiting for you), but in one or two places along the trail people having full meals get priority over those doing the tapas route so you might have to wait a while. Our route began at around 20.30h in CAFÉ INFINITO (C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 35), a bar-restaurant-pub with a perennial warm welcome, which seems to host some event or other almost every day of

the week, including art exhibitions, live music and a weekly quiz. There was a choice of spinach and cottage cheese cannelloni, a tasty ‘colourful’ mixed salad or a mini-veggie wrap. Then it was off to EL RINCONCITO DEL CEDRO next door, also on C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 35. These first two bars are amongst those on the route which make the most effort with the tapas as regards coming up with something a bit different each week. El Rinconcito is a small, cosy montadito and caña place on a corner with large windows through which you can watch the world go by and offers some of the best food on the route. The night we were there, it was vichyssoise, tuna pudding or an ingenious mini-arroz a la cubana (with all its usual ingredients). Next we stopped in at RAYUELA (C/ Campoamor, 42), a brightly lit, informal restaurant which offers crêpes and salads on the edge of the square. The restaurant takes its name from the novel by Julio Cortázar, pages of which decorate its walls. There was a choice of sautéed potatoes with a foie sauce, cheese and tomato empanada or croquettes. We then crossed the square to PETER ROCK (C/ Explorador Andrés, 19) a rock ‘n’ roll bar with heavy metal posters and guitars on the walls, which was a bit of a departure from the other places along the trail. We then went down Explorador Andrés and round to the right to one of our favourites, CASA PEPA (C/ Impresor Lambert Palmar, 3), a small tapas bar

and restaurant with friendly staff which inside looks for all the world like a typical Valencian village cottage complete with socarrats (ceramics) and dresser. After the couscous and mini-hamburgers at Casa Pepa, we went on to LA PERCANTA (C/ Campoamor, 56), a smart-looking Argentinean owned pizza restaurant where we had chicken curry and panini and then just along the row to IL GENOVINO (C/ Campoamor, 50). Il Genovino is an Italianowned bar-restaurant which is popular with Italians who live locally and shows football matches from Il Calcio. Here we were offered chicken albóndigas, pasta and pesto salad, and mushroom and provolone. Finally the trail always ends up at DELUXE POP CLUB (C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 42), for homemade desserts and ‘copas’; it's more of an indie-style nightclub than a restaurant but no less committed to the ideals of the Ruta, and not a bad place to round off the evening. The Ruta de la Tapa del Cedro is a fun way to brighten up a Wednesday night and give a little bit of purpose to an informal meeting-up with a few friends. You get to try something different regarding tapas in places you may not have got round to visiting before. It's growing in popularity and the idea is catching on – a Ruta de la Tapa is already up and running in Cánovas and watch this space for other parts of the city. CLUBLAND The summer is officially over and we move from the terrace and in house for the autumn, but the programme of events is as hot as ever! So as always, this Clubland page lifts the lid on what is happening at some of the best clubs and parties in Valencia. We start with one of the newest venues on the scene in Valencia. TB Club (C/ San Vicente Mártir, 305) (www.facebook. com/TBCLUBVLC), only opened earlier in the year and, after a summer with its doors closed; they re-opened in September with a bang. Already boasting guest DJ appearances from Pacha Ibiza residents, October continues to deliver with more guests travelling to the club from across the country. The glamorous TB Club offers a perfect balance of quality across all fronts with excellent sound, guest DJs playing the finest dance music, ‘50s-inspired decor and great looking clubbers. Check out their Crazy Show, a pre-club dining experience with cabaret, performance and DJs entertaining through your fivecourse meal. For many, Barrio del Carmen is the perfect place to hang out. You can kick off early with some great restaurants, take in a couple of bars and then be only a stone’s throw from some of the most exciting venues in the city. In an area all about the party with an array of clubs that are open seven nights a week, one of the best venues is Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) (www.radiocityvalencia.com). With resident and guest DJs plus live artists passing through the venue, you can hear an array of top music from Latin to flamenco, breaks to electro, funk and pop to indie. With such a high number of quality nights over the month ahead, it seems impossible to pick the highlights, so my advice is to go direct to their website where you can check out the month’s line up for yourself! Mya (Av. del Saler, 5) (http://www. umbracleterraza.com/), and Las Ánimas Puerto (Edificio Docks, Paseo Neptuno s/n) (http://www.lasanimasdelpuerto. com/) always enjoy a summer of openair clubbing of the highest quality, with Umbracle above Mya offering an incredible setting next to the City of Arts and Science and Las Ánimas’ roof terrace overlooking the America’s Cup

24/7 VALENCIA Port. Well, both venues continue into the autumn but move the party downstairs. Mya continue to provide uptempo dance music of a more commercial nature to a dressed up crowd while the two rooms of Las Ánimas Docks offer electro and pachanga beats, respectively, on Fridays and Saturdays. Keep an eye out for some excellent midweek events at both clubs. As we head underground, my two personal favourite clubs in the city are MiniClub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) (www.facebook.com/Miniclubvalencia), and Excuse Me? C/ dels Tomasos 12, (www.excusemeclub.org) by Ruzafa Market. Both of these little gems provide only the finest disco, house, techno and bass-heavy beats and can be relied upon to attract the DJs from across the globe to our fair city. All backed up by an array of amazing resident DJs and an incredible atmosphere – if you like underground dance music, you will love these two clubs. For October, Miniclub offer parties Thursday through Sunday and feature some of Spain's finest house and techno DJs including Daniel Kyo, a DJ who has been making waves across Europe and beyond. Excuse Me? have a massive party on Friday, 19 October with none other than French DJ Brodinski. A massive talent and world- renowned, expect a sumptuous mix of techno, bassheavy house and electronica. This is a night that should not be missed.

(www.lococlub.org).October is packed with bands and DJs playing into the night. One event that particularly stands out is the appearance of Leeds-based band the Wedding Present who have been playing across the globe since 1985. With a new album out earlier this year, expect to hear classic hits alongside their new work. Reggae, ska and dub are thriving in this part of Spain and the Rototom festival that takes place in the region in August is testament to this. Dub Club (C/ Jesus, 91) (www.facebook. com/dubclub.valencia) and Juanita (C/ Lepanto, 8) (www.facebook.com/ groups/50909260487 ) are the only places to go for roots, sound system culture and bass-laden beats. The latter is just a stone’s throw from Torres de Quart. Valencia plays host to a vast number of clubs catering for everyone. Musically the city offers such a diverse spectrum of sounds that it is impossible to fit everything onto this page. 24/7 Valencia listings further into the magazine offer a comprehensive rundown of many more venues across every night of the week. It’s all about the music, so get out, listen and experience as much of it as you can. Barry Eaton (www.valenciaclubnews.com)

La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 3) (www.facebook. com/latres.valencia ) off Av. del Puerto never disappoints with its infectious mix of music that seems to mould together so well over the three rooms of nu disco, indie electronica, electroclash plus live performances, underground beats, showcases and just about anything else they can cram into a night’s worth of debauchery! Another club that brings forth the cream of the international DJ fraternity, and the highlight of their October programme is a visit from world class DJ and Bugged Out legend, Erol Alkan. Across the month the three rooms at this venue are packed with diversity and talent, so make sure you check out their Facebook page to see what else they have in store. If rock, indie, punk, ska and live music is your bag, then don’t look much further than Loco Club (C/ Erudito Orellena, 12) © 24/ 7 Valencia 2012

FOOD

Lo Rat Penat Heartbreak Chocolate Cake By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Well, if you thought you were going to have to wait till February to woo your loved one, fear not for the feast of St. Dionisio, the patron saint of lovers, is around the corner. Mainly celebrated here as el día 9 d’Octubre, Valencia Day and yet another holiday! The bakers’ windows will be stacked with sweet little marzipan fruits known as mocaorà and these beautifully wrapped in silk scarves (also be found adorning every bakery) are the traditional gift to give your loved one on this day. To see some of the best examples of this marzipan world of art, I can recommend a visit to Cuenca Bakery on Avenida Blasco Ibáñez to see their spectacular window display. Valencia Day also celebrates the reconquest of Valencia from the Moors by King Jaime I in 1238 and his adoption of the bat Lo Rat Penat as Valencia’s emblem. Many versions abound as to why the bat became the symbol, but for St. Dionisio’s feast, we’ll choose the most romantic one. On the eve of the final battle for the city of Valencia, it is told that a bat (previously the mascot of the Moors for catching mosquitoes) flew into the tent of King Jaime I, whereupon the bat espied the iron dragon crowning the king’s helmet and fell hopelessly in love. This enabled the king to capture the bat and with the bat in the bag, hence the strength of the Moors. The next day the battle was won and the bat became the heraldic symbol of the city. And so in homage to our noble Lo Rat Penat and its misplaced love, we present ‘Lo Rat Penat’s Heartbreak Chocolate Cake’, adapted from a recipe by Harry Eastwood. It may seem a bit sinister to make a cake with aubergine, with its dark purple hue and

Lo Rat Penat’s Heartbreak Chocolate Cake • 2 small whole aubergines (weighing roughly 400 gm) • 300 gm dark chocolate of 70% minimum cocoa solids (nothing else will do), broken into small squares • 50 gm good quality cocoa powder, plus extra for dusting • 60 gm ground almonds • 3 medium free-range eggs • 200 gm clear honey • 2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon brandy (optional for dragon fire)

aubergine puree. Make sure all the chocolate has melted and inhale. Whisk up all the other ingredients for a minute in a large bowl and then fold the melted chocolate and aubergine mixture into the other ingredients. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and place in the bottom of the oven for 30 minutes. Your kitchen should be smelling nicely like a cauldron of chocolate by now. Take the cake out of the oven and let it cool in its tin for 15 minutes before peeling off the parchment paper. Quickly turn it over again so it is the right way up. Take your bat stencil. Mix a little cocoa powder mixed with icing sugar and sieve over the form of your bat shape. St. Dionisio, silk scarves or no, you will be in heaven!

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LA PITANZA We booked this month’s restaurant, La Pitanza, for a Monday night and reserved a table on la terraza hoping that the weather would be kind (following the deluge that took lives and roads away a few nights earlier). Luckily the evening was warm, so dining on the pavement outside this attractive restaurant was definitely an option. We were greeted by Belén, the chef and part owner of La Pitanza (her partner is her brother) and she introduced us to our waiter Joan (Valenciano for Juan). He gave us a menu to look over as he was busy serving another of the three tables on the terraza, an English couple who were quizzing him on the ingredients of a traditional paella. We overheard some of the conversation, “Oh no, madam, there is definitely no chorizo in a Valencian paella. Maybe they do this in Madrid, but not here in Valencia!” Once he had put them right and taken their order for a paella marinera, he was free to talk with us and was very happy to hear that we would leave everything up to him, including choosing our red wine. Joan’s taste in wines is impeccable as proved by his choice for us, a Heretat de Taverners Mallaura 2008, locally produced by the small bodega of the same name in Fontanars dels Alforins and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Monastrell and Garnacha. Served by Joan with the grace and aplomb of a sommelier in the finest of restaurants, it is a really fine wine at a great price. Once the wine had been served, an amusebouche of a boquerone and olive artfully served in a presentation sardine tin arrived at the table along with some lovely crusty bread. A beautifully served tomato, skinned and filled with the best tuna, capers and onions in a delicious dressing was our first entrada,

a refreshing and delicious start to a meal. Joan told us the best was yet to come and returned with a tiny, creamy chowder-esque soup topped with a slice of griddled duck foie (liver), a dribble of balsamic vinegar and topped with toasted, cracked corn. We were instructed to get it all on a spoonful and eat in one mouthful – rather like a shot – to get the true flavour. I remember once seeing a BBC children’s presenter guesting on a cookery show and on being asked to taste something, going into raptures and describing it as (shock horror!) “a mouthgasm” – she could well have been describing this little treasure. Next came a small red pepper stuffed with ciervo picada (minced deer meat), and topped with frutos rojos (red fruits). Very rich and tasty. Belén was keen for us to try as many of her favourite dishes as we could and we were lucky enough to have a taste of a bowl of a chickpea, langoustine, calamari and pulpo stew which had an unusual and very welcome spicy edge! We loved this, too! So, by the way, do some of her regulars who actually phone ahead to make sure this is on the menu when they come to La Pitanza to dine. Next came the first of two entrantes (main courses): Pescadilla y almejas (baby merluza and clams) in a traditional suquet (a sauce made with tomatoes, onions, garlic, bread, saffron and ground almonds). D loves fish and could have eaten this all night, it was so good. Come to think of it, so could I. The second main course was Carrillera de cerdo (cheek of pork) slowly stewed until it melts in the mouth, and accompanied by a few crispy potato wedges. We were really so full by this time that we shouldn't have manage to eat this, but do you know what? We did, and it was lovely. Joan insisted we try Belén's puddings, too, and we agreed as long as we could sit awhile and make room for Belén to come and chat with us about the meal we had just eaten and the

restaurant. She is coming up to 10 years with this family venture (her mother helps her in the kitchen), it originally started serving drinks and tapas, but she got bolder and decided to offer a full menu. She cooks what is fresh from the market that day, so the menu changes daily. La Pitanza specialises in rice dishes and Belén is happy to accommodate the eating habits of northern Europeans and regularly cooks paellas in the early evening to serve them. It has been a great success, deservedly, and she has a loyal customer base. Her family is Valencia born and bred and Belén grew up in the old town, by the Mercado Central. It was then time to try some desserts. Belén prepared a little selection of three: Crema Catalana (a thick vanilla custard topped with sugar), a cheesecake with forest fruits, and finally a rich chocolate cake with a heavenly mandarin sorbet. Joan, a very charming and extremely knowledgeable guy, especially when it comes to fine wine, generously presented us each with chilled glass of a superb moscatel wine from Navarro, Pago de Cirsus, a perfect partner for a light and delicious dessert. La Pitanza is great value, the meal we had was roughly what you would get in a set dinner menu for just 24€ (three starters, one main course and dessert). As I write this it's our wedding anniversary tomorrow, and I'm sorely tempted to go again to celebrate with their fine quality service, food and drink. Kaf Café Bohemian lives! Bohemia lives and Kaf Café is one of its best meetings points in Valencia. It’s a cosy, warm, safe and comfortable hangout for people with open minds and lovers of art, music and books covering many subjects… Kaf Café is run and owned by the pleasantly grounded Uruguayan couple Sebastián and Cecilia. The former is of Valencian descent as well as being a painter and poet, and you can currently see his paintings on display this month of October. It’s clear that they care about what they do regarding food, drink and culture in general. Their philosophy is that culture can be created in small places that have nothing to do with officially funded public spaces and that reading should be free – hence their free library! Every month they have a packed programme of talks, documentaries, films, live acoustic gigs, poetry readings and more. Check out what’s on their agenda for October and the coming months! Named after the famous Czech writer Franz Kafka, Sebastián was part of a writers group in the past and decided to name the bar in homage to the great literary figure. Coincidentally, this ‘24/7 Valencia’ member’s first teaching job abroad was in the Czech Republic, just a few years after the Velvet Revolution. Kafka’s museum in Prague is definitely worth a visit… At Kaf Café, the music soundtrack is eclectic Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

with some choice jazz, blues, rock ’n’ roll, folk, world music and more but the emphasis is on mellow volume so that people can really relax with their drink and food and hear themselves in conversation, too! The last night we went we were privileged to hear deep funk sounds played by good friend and lifelong revolutionary DJ Crazy, who provided a great soundtrack to the night with War (minus Eric Burdon) and jazz – funk from the early ‘70s… Over the many times that we have enjoyed a night out at Kaf Café, we’ve tasted their authentic empanadas done the South American way, chatted over nachos con guacamole and been filled by their patatas a la sal con all i oli. There are seven tapas to choose from and 12 montaditos, too. Our favourite is their mermelada de tomate con queso de cabra (salted goat’s cheese with sweet tomato marmalade) …delish! A healthy option is the Ensalada Kaf with corn salad, tomato, avocado, raisins, goat’s cheese and sesame seeds. Expect to pay 10 – 15€ a head for a meal here. Drinks include house wines at 2€ a glass, Chimay Trappist monk beer, Palauner as well as the usual Heineken and Amstel. There are a good range of infusions, pleasantly served in earthenware style cups including red tea, black tea, mint, jasmine, lemon, Earl Grey, Rooibos and the interesting tea of ‘Eden’, which combines apple, nectarine and peach. It’s good! We tried it last Saturday evening on an energetic full moon and it did the trick.

Their library is impressive, with almost 3,000 books to browse and borrow from and is conveniently shelved in easy-to-use sections with art books, philosophy, science fiction, literature, psychology, poetry, short stories, plays, history, detective and thriller novels, travel guides and more. There is also a quite a good English section. Each book in the library has a form within it to fill in and your time given to borrow is as long as you wish, within reason. Ask at the bar for more details. This is culture with a generous heart. On November 3, ‘24/7 Valencia’ magazine will be celebrating its 12th anniversary in Kaf Café with live music from 21.30 – 23.00h from a ‘Folk – Jazz’ duo and then a party until 01.30h. All of our readers are welcome and there is food and drink to enjoy at a very reasonable price. The concert has a free entry. This is a lovely, relaxingly lit and genuinely alternative hangout with a healthy philosophy of sharing and creating ideas and good times. Kaf Café has become an essential part of the increasingly active & hip Benimaclet café – bar scene. Welcome to all. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Two Steps Forward – One Step Back It is turning out to be a real stop-start beginning to the season for Valencia Club de Fútbol. After scraping just two points from a possible nine, the Chés managed to get their first win of the season over Celta de Vigo. The increasingly impressive Feghouli got Valencia off to a dream start after just three minutes, converting a cross from Jonathan Viera. However, the team from Vigo did not roll over and struck back after 15 minutes… thanks to some poor judgement from home keeper Diego Alves. Valencia were put under the cosh but held on and a headed goal from new signing Cissokho gave Valencia the three points. Pellegrino himself said that VCF

had won without playing well and most of Mestalla was in complete agreement with him. A few days later, a much sterner test awaited Pellegrino’s team as they travelled to Munich to take on the mighty Bayern in the opening match of this season’s Champions League. The difference in quality between the two sides was enormous. The midfield duo of Tino Costa and Dani Parejo were completely outclassed and were unable to convert a pass during the 90 minutes. The Germans, principally through an excellent Toni Kroos, controlled the match from start to finish, and finishes from Kroos himself and Schweinsteiger were enough to ensure that Pellegrino’s first taste of Champions football as a manager was to be defeat. A late goal from Valencia forward Valdez made the scoreline a little more flattering for the Spanish visitors. Back in the league, the team had to travel away to Mallorca, a perfect occasion to wipe away the disappointment of the defeat at the hands of the Bavarians. But, alas, VCF were

very poor to say the least. Mistakes from the two centre-backs Rami and Ruiz, plus questionable decisions from the Valencia goalie Alves, allowed the home team to pull out a two-goal lead, which they never looked in danger of surrendering. A week later Zaragoza were the visitors to Mestalla, a Ché victory was imperative and thanks to strikes from Valencia’s two most, and only, impressive players, Viera and Feghouli, ensured a two-nil victory for the home team. This gave Pellegrino a bit more breathing space as criticism was growing due to the shaky start to the campaign. Once again the team did not play well but managed to grind out a result, right-back Pereira and the return of Fernando Gago were the other two notable positives from the game. The next round of the Champions League saw Valencia take on Lille and a result was important for the blanc i negres after their disappointing visit to Munich. Pellegrino recalled Valencian keeper Vicente Guaita, after a string of dodgy performances from Diego Alves, and he also gave a chance to

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

reserve team player Carlos Delgado. Both players responded well to the challenge and did not let their manager down. Valencia ran out 2-0 winners, thanks to a brace from the Jonas brother who slotted away a fortuitous Soldado pass and then scored directly from a cross he mishit. A half-empty Mestalla yet again saw a more than average performance but importantly the Chés got three points on the board, and their next game away to Bate Borisov will be very important after the Belarusians managed to defeat Bayern Munich in the surprise result of the week. Whilst in the league the upcoming fixtures will see them play against Betis, Athletic Bilbao and neighbours Levante. Valencia’s biggest headache at the moment is their lack of money and the fact that Bankia has pulled out of the financial deal, which would have seen the new stadium completed. President Llorente has warned that the club will have to keep on selling its best players as it seeks to lessen its debts, so goodbye Feghouli and Soldado? Levante have also had a topsy-turvy start to proceedings. Home wins to Real Sociedad, Espanyol and Helsinborgs in the Europa League have been offset by heavy defeats against Osasuna and Málaga. But the granotas have a relatively easy run of games, which sees them take on Getafe and Granada and, who would bet against them pulling out a surprise win against a distinctly average Valencia? As far as their European adventure goes, they are set to face Hannover 96 and FC Twente.

So it has been an average start to the season for both teams from the capital as both squads look for a little more consistency in October. The local derby will be fundamental for both teams as they look to find some form. Amunt i Força Mark Hulton See listings page 31 for football calendar

COMMENT

The Queue After twenty years in Spain, I am afraid to say that there are still some aspects of life and culture here that baffle and exasperate me. My regular readers will be aware of my trials and tribulations with bureaucracy. A word of stoic advice in this regard: if you have any bureaucratic procedure to do (buy a car, change doctor, pay tax, etc.), assume it will take at least three visits to the relevant offices and take far longer than you imagine. In a country with such a vast, unwieldy bureaucracy, one of the most visible examples of culture shock that I have yet to overcome is the Spanish queue. Let me explain how the ‘system’ for queuing works in Spain. When you first enter a shop or approach a market stall, you may be perplexed at first to see an amorphous mass of people milling about apparently aimlessly. In fact, this is the ‘queue’. You must call out “¿El último?” to discover who is at the ‘end’ of the ‘queue’. The next person to walk in will do the same, and you must let them know that the ‘último’ is now your good self if you do not wish to lose your place. To Brits like me, I used to feel miffed at first at people ‘pushing in’ front Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

of me, until I realised that they were just wandering about yet perfectly aware that I was before them in the imaginary queue. In fact, this ‘system’ does have its advantages. For example, if you only want one item in the supermarket yet the person in front of you has a trolley load of goods, you can often ask politely to ‘push in’ front of them to save time. You can also get the person behind you to save your place while you do something else, though this is not infallible. Again, the newcomer to Spain can find this disconcerting when people stroll into a shop and reclaim their place in the queue in front of you, and as in all countries there are wily old ladies who will take advantage of your lack of awareness to push in front of you. I first experienced Spaniards’ lack of awareness of orderly queuing as an English teacher long ago. I put a group of teenagers in a line and told them to imagine they were in a queue and that they had to pass information down the line from the “information desk” (my desk) at the front of the class. After several minutes of frustrating confusion,

it finally dawned on me that it was the whole concept of queuing that they hadn’t managed to grasp. And this is where the problems start for Brits like me who love their orderly queues. Take the example of my local clinic, which I think represents all the inherent problems with queuing in Spain. I visit this clinic regularly to give blood samples, and the procedure for queuing goes something like this: 1. Arrive at clinic to mob of people around the entrance, wandering about or sitting on the kerb. This is the ‘queue’. 2. Walk around trying to discover who is ‘last’. 3. All rush towards door when public workers finally arrive 10 minutes late (natch). 4. Argue about who came before whom. 5. On passing through door, take number from ticket reel craftily hidden behind door where people can’t see

twentyfoursevenvalencia 41

COMMENT it. Some people who know this slyly take their number and sit down quietly without telling anyone. However, these people are unaware that there are in fact two queues; one after the other, and the first queue does not go by ticket number. In other words, as they sit in smug silence they are actually losing their place. 6. Finally arrive at front desk regardless of the order in which you began in the queue. (Now go back and get ticket number if you didn’t know you needed one or didn’t see the hidden reel.) 7. Jostle amid people wielding badly sealed wee samples (and I don’t mean small ones) to get given bits of suspiciously soggy paper (natch) for next queue.

conclusion that the reason the Spanish have such a fondness for official bits of paper is that they need written proof of their rights and duties for arbitration in case something goes wrong (e.g., tickets in case they lose their place in a queue, posters on the bus indicating they should give up their seats to pregnant ladies, etc.). When I tell Spanish friends that the U.K. has no written constitution, they are often baffled, especially as their own constitution was so hard won. My somewhat smug reply is usually this: “British people don’t need a written constitution to know their basic rules. They can see them written in the orderly queue for the bus.” El Gazza

8. Sit down and wait for ticket number to appear on digital screen. If bored, moan loudly and indignantly about lack of organisation and suggest other queuing methods involving different bits of paper and number systems. 9. Realize after 15 minutes that the number screen is not working (as usual). 10. Curse bitterly and blame others for not informing you. Go back to 5. The Latin queue is perhaps one of the clearest examples of the differences between northern and southern European cultures and, I believe, indicative of what lies at the root of the reason for the massively oppressive bureaucracy in Mediterranean countries. The simple act of forming a line of people, one behind the other, is turned into a system of numbers, screens and bits of paper, with rules written down in an attempt to ensure people don’t cheat the system (which some will certainly do, given the chance). So whilst I have enjoyed the sun, landscapes and other more attractive sides to Spanish culture, I often wonder how many months of my life have been spent unnecessarily waiting in public buildings. This leads me to the Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA WORLD

level here was at least two years ahead of what it was in the States. I remember that my fellow classmates had started to study differential calculus at the age of 15! Believe me, it took lots of hard work for me to be able to catch up and adjust to what was demanded.

JOHN GARCÍA Tell us about your experiences of growing up in the States and then moving to Valencia in 1979… In the beginning it was quite a culture shock. Not only were there huge differences between both countries, but I also had to adjust from having resided in a residential area, full of open spaces and wooded areas, to living in a city. None of my former high school classmates in the States had any concerns regarding politics. This was not the case in Valencia. You must recall, this was still the beginning of democracy in Spain. There were a few students who were affiliated to right-wing parties. Most were very active, outspoken and outright violent at times. Most students, however, had leftist ideals. Many of them had grown up surrounded by relatives who despised the totalitarian regime that had reigned in Spain during the previous four decades. Every Saturday and Sunday, the Fascist Party would set up stands in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, still called Plaza del Caudillo at the time, to promote their party. Fortunately, this is something we do not have to observe nowadays. As you can imagine, I had never seen anything like this in the U.S. It was stunning. Another thing that shocked me was academics. There was a huge difference at that time between the levels demanded in mathematics, physics, history, all subjects, really, between Spain and the U.S. The

Things have changed now, and there is virtually no difference between academic standards in the U.S. and Spain. You see, until the early to mid-‘90s, only the best students studied ‘preparatory’ secondary school. The rest went to vocational schools or simply got jobs at the age of 14. This has changed now, and secondary school education is comprehensive and compulsory until the age of 16. Now everyone goes to secondary school. Has Valencia changed much in the last 30 years? Yes, a great deal. When I arrived, there were streetlights only in the city centre. It wasn’t until the early ‘80s that streetlights were installed all around town. The riverbed, where we now have a beautiful park, was practically abandoned. There were a few dirt soccer fields here and there but, for the most part, it was a swampy area full of reeds, debris and homeless people. It was quite a dangerous area. There were practically no tourists in the city. There was really not much to see, except for the historical part of the city. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias has really done a great deal for this city. It has made Valencia a well-known city in Europe and beyond. Nowadays you see tourists and Erasmus students all around the city. Describe your typical day. I work at the UNED University teaching English Literature and Translation. Most of our classes are in the evening so I do not have to be in my office until 10.30h. That allows me to get up early, set the kids to school and go to the gym before work.

In the mornings, aside from preparing my lectures, I have to tend to e-mails from my students, review online student forums and general office tasks. In the afternoons, I have my classes and after that, three times a week, I go to practice as I coach a local baseball team in the Spanish División de Honor. Could you let our readers know about the Valencia baseball team that you run? The Valencia Astros are more a club than a team. You see, it is composed of various teams, which correspond to different age groups. The team with most exposure is obviously the senior team that, as I stated previously, competes in the top Spanish league, which is nationwide. We ended up in first place during the regular season, having won 32 out of the 36 games, but we lost the playoffs for the championship against FC Barcelona. We have various Americans on that squad who, in turn, also coach in our youth program. We have almost 100 young boys and girls in our youth program ranging from age 8 to 18. This program has grown enormously in the last three years since we decided to conduct our baseball practices in English. We have many Spanish kids who started out because their families were more interested in improving their kid’s English than in the sport itself! Fortunately, many of them discover the sport and they continue with us for this reason. We also have a few American youngsters in our teams. We believe it is a great way of having kids from different backgrounds and cultures mingle and learn from each other. If anyone is interested in trying this experience, they can get in touch with me at jgarciapuig@ono.com or the head of the Youth Program, Albert, at aloroig@hotmail. com. Facebook Valencia Astros.

WOMAN

My best pal, partner in crime and drinking/ shopping/running/b*tching buddy Lolita Devine had her birthday last month, and though it was not a round number, we decided to make it a Special Do nonetheless. Falling mid-September, her birthday is usually a pretty fun affair as it brings our little clique back together after the general drift apart during the ‘Summer Holidays’ (as if we were still at school or something) – we all go a little bit AWOL from July onwards so it marks a reunion of sorts as well as a chance to celebrate another wonderful year of Ms. Devine. We spent the first half of the month testing cake recipes, tracking down trinkets, dusting off lanterns and candles and downloading essential tunes for a top party playlist. We had the party in her lovely secluded garden, where we enjoyed champagne cocktails as the sun went down, chomped on a delicious Mexican feast, nibbled on cake pops, sat and chatted, danced, drank more cocktails and gossiped some more til the early hours. We even played a drinking game, just like teenagers – I thought I would die laughing as I tried hopelessly to spell out the letters of VODKA with my body... As the guests gradually trickled off home, the few of us girlies left behind moved indoors, slipped into PJs and crashed in a heap on her ample sofas. It was a very sophisticated yet rather relaxed affair and a lovely way to welcome in the Autumn. It is a funny time of the year, though. For starters, it was 33 degrees in the sun today when I popped out for a sneaky fag, yet this evening I am sitting here with a streaming cold, puffy eyes, doped up to

available – 100 cañas (little beers) and 100 montaditos for 100 euros. Frankly, if it’s not on a Wednesday or Sunday when everything is a euro anyway, say if I was a sports coach and had 10 strapping young lads to feed, I would think that this offer seemed to good too be true – 10 euros a head for dinner including 10 beers? Obviously, for us ladies 10 little baguettes is out of the question, I can barely manage more than three, but I plan to spread the word for huge groups – they even give you one of each item on the menu! What a bloody nightmare for their kitchen staff! Apparently, in the one by the train station it hasn't been ordered yet, but I will keep you posted, I plan on finding out just how successful this deluded deal actually is. the ears with paracetamol and something sweet and citric I was given in a glass. (As you can see, I am very trusting). Just the other day, after a super crazy week at The Bank, I met some girlfriends for some beers on a terrace at the end of the day and it soon became glaringly clear that it is not only my body that is confused by the changing season. True, the magazines, blogs, and the Internets lead us to believe that transition fashion is “fun” and “easy” – layer this, tie that, put ankle boots on with a summer skirt – but the reality is that it is no mean feat to pull off. As we sat people watching, my favourite outdoor activity in case you were wondering, it was obvious that the recent Fashion Weeks just taken place (New York, London, Paris, Valencia!) had no influence whatsoever on the general public, who seem to take a very laid back approach to getting dressed in the morning. More of a, “Throw on what's lying on the back of this chair and pull on these warm boots 'cause I heard it’s going to be chilly today” sort of attitude. As we do, when it involves beer, girls and fashion, we got into a ridiculous conversation about how we could hold a New Season Crash Course in Getting Dressed, have it in 100 Montaditos, and charge a euro a head. This crazy concept came about not because we want to make money from the clueless, oh no, we want to share our knowledge for FREE, to make the City an even more beautiful place. No, my friend, diverting even further from our initial subject, as these alcohol-infused conversations often do, we decided on the cover charge because our favourite mini-baguette shop has a new offer

For my conference, however, I would not have just those 10 lads attend, though they are of course more than welcome especially if they would like to model, say, underwear or swimwear – the beers and bread would be shared amongst those guilty of wearing leggings as trousers, underwear as outerwear, tracksuits outside the gym, that kind of thing. I would, along with my girlfriends, as they enjoyed a warm carbbased snack and an ice cool beer, explain how hard it should be not to look on-trend these days even if you wanted to with all the super cool things in all the shops at the moment! It’s already jeans weather, I'll grant you that, so pull on something studded (you really can't avoid this trend - I swear Zara clothes should come with protective goggles for your loved ones so many items are spiked and pronged) and sling on a blazer and voila! We did just so the other night as we took Lolita out to one of our local bars to cheer her up. It appeared that after the initial excitement of the birthday celebrations died down, the whole I'm So Old thought hit her like a watermelon (look up ‘Watermelon Launch’ on YouTube, you will totally understand) and so distraction was needed, ASAP. Turns out we took her to just the right place - it appears that getting checked out by 22-year-old boys as we play pool is just the ticket. Even worked wonders for me, and my birthday's not for another five months.

A VALENCIA STORY

No Ham, No Life... by D. Blackwell and wished he’d grown up in the country and not in the city.

PART 8 (Based in Valencia, our motley crew have gone to Aragon for a festival...) During the weeks leading up to the festival, the villagers had all been encouraged to write dirty ditties. These were then selected and performed by the band. A panel of ten individuals, including the mayor, were judging for the best ditty of the year. The songs swiftly reduced the crowd into drunken belly laughs as each joke reached its punch line. The composer of each number could be easily spotted by the elbow jabs they were receiving from friends and family as their song was performed. Miguel was in his element contemplating the vocal swoops and arcs. He integrated himself into one group of revellers by complimenting the old patriarch whose song had just been performed. During an instrumental break placed to give the judges time to relax and have a drink with friends and family, Miguel turned to the old man and made a well-informed comment about jotas de Aragón (a comment he’d actually just lifted from the liner notes of a CD) and the viejo patted him on the back, repeating, “that’s ma boy, that’s ma boy…” and passed him a plastic bottle filled with some unknown alcoholic drink. Miguel feared going blind if he decided to drink it, but went with the flow anyway and took a swig, feeling more at ease now that the village vibe was finally beginning to coax him out of his shell. He felt an immense satisfaction at being part of a cultural tradition like this

Morgan, Javi and George eventually grew tired of the music and wandered off for more beer and hijinks. George spent most of the remainder of the day besotted with the waitress. Javi swept from group to group like a rock star, and Morgan was periodically plucked from amid the throng to entertain a new group with his jig which, as usual, resulted in him kissing some old lady. Morgan was like a species from a different planet so the husbands didn’t seem to mind. Their girlfriends were all too fat and ugly to be worth fighting over, anyway. It was fiesta. They could roll with it, and if they wanted to hunt him down later it would prove no problem spotting him because he was the only redhead in town. The sky eventually darkened, blackening the evergreens on the hill, and the winning song was picked. The old lady who composed it was begrudgingly nudged out of the crowd by her son-inlaw and accepted the prize, blushing bright red from embarrassment at the foul language she had used to win. The group of four somehow miraculously reconvened in the town square and began saying their goodbyes to their newfound friends. The butcher tried to convince them to stay another day and go boar hunting come dawn. Miguel stepped in quickly and nipped the idea in the bud by insisting he had a concert in the city and thanks for the offer but, “There’s just no way…”

flashing his gold filling, and presently Morgan and George dropped off to sleep. Javi finally used up his key anecdotes (including a joke about the town of Formixe being founded by an Englishman and a Valenciano; the punch line was “For Me, Xe”). He finally fell into a keen silence, observing the proud evergreen trees, patron tree of his hometown, lining the road leading out to the highway. He looked on them with yearning. Javi was a little concerned about whether Miguel was still mad at him, then Miguel began in a gentle voice to croon the winning ditty: “Said the ass to the pussy, what great milk you lap.” He repeated the line with all the graceful vocal arches of the jota style. “Said the ass to the pussy, what great milk you lap.” He paused and drew breath, to get the most out of the harmony as it reached up. “You take all the cream….” And Javi chimed in, “And leave me with the crap!” Javi laughed and watched Miguel’s contented face shining in the rear-view mirror. They really, truly, loved each other in spite Miguel’s refusal to bow down at the altar of Ham. They fled the little town, the fountain singing their names as they hurtled on to the distant city, with no suspension and a prime cut of pig in Morgan’s pocket.

Javi and the butcher hugged, then Javi began hugging the rest of the village, one by one, which took its toll on the others; they spent a good hour actually getting from the square to the car. Javi took the driver’s seat, and off they set. He proceeded to tell everyone about his apprenticeship in the red light district,
