As the days get shorter and the nights get longer… now is the time to make the most of Valencia in autumn. The increasingly popular ‘La Cabina’ International film festival features medium length films at the IVAM in November. Cines Babel, Yelmo & Filmoteca are salas where you can enjoy original version cinema in this great city throughout the year. Check out our exclusive report on La Cabina as well as an interesting look at Valencia’s long history with the world of cinema. Although we now live in a world of Youtube, DVD & digitial television nothing beats the sense of occasion of seeing a film on the big screen. Talking of the bigger picture, 24/7 Valencia is recommended by the international media including Time Out, The Times, CNN.com, The Guardian, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Lonely Planet, Business Traveller Magazine, Thomas Cook and many more. Check out ‘Clubland’ with our expert Barry Eaton. He tells us what’s going down in the clubs from the centro historico to the port and from the hip barrio of Ruzafa to the studenty area of Blasco Ibañez. In ‘Woman’, the legendary Anita Darling does haircuts, festivals and partying on! We have an exclusive interview with a Valencian taxi driver who was brought up in England by Spanish parents and decided to move back to these sunnier climes. We don’t blame him! At ‘24/7 Valencia’, we are interested in promoting local artists and we took the time out to interview the highly talented musician Gilbertástico who has a new album out in November. He will be presenting his new work at Sala Russafa on November 16. In ‘Valencia Football’, expert writer Mark Hulton reflects on the ups and downs of Valencia CF and the valiant progression of perennial underdogs Levante UD. Talking of contrasts, El Gazza gives food for thought with his piece on ‘Road Rage’ on the streets of Spain… What the world needs now is love, sweet love. A wise person once said that too many people in the modern world are more interested in being “right” than “nice”. Let’s bury our differences and work together for a better future. La Cabina Film Festival @IVAM (Guillem de Castro, 118)
Films from 30 to 60 minutes. Valencia, 9th to 18th November 2012 The fifth edition of the La Cabina Film Festival will be held this month in Valencia between November 9th and 18th. The festival is open only to mediometrajes, or medium-length films between 30 and 60 minutes long and is the only truly international festival of its type in the world. According to its organisers, the aim is to bring us something a bit different and “liberate us with the magic of the cinema”. In a city which has always had a huge fascination with the big screen, will it triumph where other previous attempts at film festivals have failed? Now Valencia has a new film festival, and, starting from modest beginnings, the hope and expectation is that it will be much more successful than previous attempts. The first La Cabina festival was held over three days in 2008 with just eight films. Through five years of hard work and promotion on the part of its organisers, over 100 films have been shown and this year will be the biggest one yet with more than 20 films. It has become a real showcase for young talent and has exploited a “gap in the market” for films
which are too long for festivals of short films and too short for traditional festivals. The festival starts on November 9th in the Valencia Filmoteca's Sala García Berlanga and continues through to November 18th in IVAM. All films will be shown in original version with Spanish and English subtitles and, to celebrate the fifth anniversary, there will also be two silent films shown accompanied by live music in the gardens of the Valencia Municipal Library in C/ Hospital on November 8th. There will be films from, amongst other countries, Germany, Austria, the U.S., Spain and Poland. This year’s festival also includes a number of Asian films like “Your Kind Neighbour”, a South Korean horror thriller from Sohn Won-Pyung, and “Miyuki” by Hideto Mori, a Japanese film in which a young girl faces up to her fears with the help of a mysterious hunter. There will also be animated films, such as “The Monster of Nix” by the Dutch filmmaker and comic artist Rosto, an animated musical which was made with the collaboration of people like Terry Gilliam, Tom Waits and the Residents.
In their press release, the organisers tell us that being on the side of culture these days is a “political act”. If you are getting a bit tired of the same old thrills of the multiplex, vote with your feet and get down to the IVAM for something a bit different. Who knows? You might even enjoy yourself. Between the 1950s and 1990s, Valencia had more cinemas per capita than any other Spanish city, including Madrid and Barcelona. Most of them were built in the golden age of the ‘50s, enormous picture palaces with impressive façades and luxuriously carpeted and curtained foyers reflecting the glamour on the big screen, which was magically beamed in (in glorious Cinemascope) from what often seemed like another world. Franco understood the power of cinema and apart from the frequent, clumsy snips of the censor’s scissors (which often left films surreally unintelligible), the regime never stood in its way. Along with football and TV, it was harnessed both as a distraction from the harsh realities of post-war Spain and as a propaganda tool which would Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

promote the dictatorship’s ideas and values. Competing for attention with the Hollywood romantic comedies, westerns and sword & sandal epics were the products of a prolific Spanish film industry, full of patriotic fervour, honest rural folk, conquistadors and saints, and the fight for independence against the nasty French. The regime encouraged filmmakers to reflect the values of Spanish culture and portray what it considered to be the most glorious moments in Spanish history. On Sunday mornings, filmgoers would walk down the C/ Ruzafa or around what is now the Plaza de Ayuntamiento to check out the posters to see what film they would be coming to see that afternoon. Long before the days of ‘multi-screenings’, each cinema would be showing a different film and Liz Taylor as Cleopatra would be side-by-side on the posters with Aurora Bautista as Juana la Loca or Sara Montiel invariably playing a virtuous and very Catholic cabaret singer in peril. By the end of the ‘90s, of course, most of these grand picture houses had gone, replaced by home entertainment and the modern day shopping centre multiplex. First to go had been the local neighbourhood fleapits which re-
showed films after their initial run in the cinemas in the centre. Then, little by little, the large picture houses in the city centre started to disappear from the Avenidas, Gran Vías and Plazas, all of which were once littered with cinemas and now only remain in the memory of those who knew them. Some, like the Olympia and the Rialto, were re-converted into theatres while others, like the Rex, became hotels. Most of them, though, are now clothes shops, bookshops, perfumeries and unrecognisable while some, like the enormous Cine Serrano, have disappeared altogether. If you look carefully, however, there is still some evidence of what was once such a big part of this city’s life; the grand 1930s façade of the Capitol in C/ Ribera, now a clothes shop (inside the shop you can still see some of the statues that were made for the cinema's foyer), and the old neighbourhood Cine Jerusalem near Plaza España, now a discoteca. Perhaps as a response to the city’s apparent love of film, it was decided that Valencia should have its very own film festival. The Mostra de València, Cinema del Mediterrani was inaugurated in 1980. Sadly, although the festival lasted thirty years, there was no honeymoon period
De perros y caballos, by Thomas Stuber
or golden age, it seemed to be doomed from the start and, despite a lot of interest from the public, it never seemed to receive any substantial support from the critics or local press. With the worthy, but perhaps not very commercial, aim of promoting the cinema of countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, along with a few lowbudget French and Italian films, the main section of the Cine del Mediterráneo festival was always less popular than the fringe sections, which really drew the public in but had little or nothing to do with the Mediterranean (in different years there were seasons of gore, science fiction, western and horror films). People could buy a stub of ten tickets relatively cheaply so you would probably take in the odd Algerian or Egyptian production, but you mostly spent the week watching a series of classic horror films. In its final death throes in 2010, the theme was changed from Mediterranean film to ‘Action and Adventure’ film until the festival was finally abandoned in 2011, mayor Rita Barberá citing the recession as the reason.

VALENCIA MUSIC
GILBERTÁSTICO by Charly García, Andrés Calamaro, Los Abuelos de la Nada and I now listen a lot to Franco Battiato. How do you find Valencia as a place to live as a professional musician? It’s a good city for inspiration but obviously you have to leave frequently and play in other cities to be on a national level in Spain. Thank God for the Internet, which makes life a lot easier now in terms of reaching people with your music. Take us through the tracks on your album, Heil Gilber.
GILBERTÁSTICO Tell us something about your background, school, travels and experiences. My name is Gilberto Aubán and I studied classical music (piano, violin, choir) whilst going to a religious music school L’Escolania de la Mare de Déu, which gave me a good musical base from an early age. This lasted until I was 14 years old, when I started playing sala football for a while…but I soon learnt that my real path was music. At 16 years old, I formed my first group Estilo Casero and I started to sing as Gilbertástico at 23. Until then, music was something quite important yet complementary to my life, first as a university student, then as a journalist. I happily left that type of life behind, for good, three years ago but in spirit I’d left it behind a long time before. Describe your music and influences. My music changes with no fixed direction. Nothing I do now resembles what I have done before with the exception of the way I sing and the piano, which is nearly always present in my songs. Regarding the rest of my music, I am an unknown quantity and I never stop surprising myself, for better or for worse. As for influences, classical music is obviously one of my strongest inspirations, including Renaissance music. Recently, I have been listening to a lot of Renaissance guitar compositions, including those by John Dowland. This brings me to one of my favourite groups; the Welsh band Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. This band has a lot of connection with El Niño Gusano, that magnificent and surreal Spanish band. In Spain, we also listen to a lot of Argentinean music and for a long time I was influenced For more information: gilbertastico.bandcamp.com
“Amor Tírria” It’s about the lack of control that an unattainable beauty and youth can provoke. “Vida y Mar” Reflections on the deck of a ship coming back from a memorable trip to an island. Being on the high seas is very similar to being on your own, just wide-open space and complete liberty. “No Sirve el Arte” It’s a way of reducing the importance of the artist. We can spend months or years perfecting a work of art and it can become our only universe but, really, you soon realize that life outside continues with its problems and that sometimes it is difficult to apply art to real life, something that I find to be very negative. “Locos en la Isla” A happy and pretty way to transform being stood up into a bit of a dance tune. It creates an interesting duality with the next song because the protagonist in this song is the forgotten one and in the next… “Un Nombre Vasco” He’s the one who turns up late for a date that then never occurs. “Barchín del Hoyo” It’s about nature and the cycles of life. One summer we went to the country to play in cottages in exchange for food and board. They gave us bicycles to explore the mountains. One day, standing in the middle of the forest, I noticed that the mere existence of living beings around me was a symphony that I had never heard before. It was a tremendously cosmic experience with nature that, as a city dweller, I had never known. For that reason, I decided to make a painting of that afternoon, in words and music, so as to
never forget it. “Máquinas de Fichar” Where is the world going? Can you manufacture the manufacturer? Can you control the controller? Manufacture machines that control the manufacturer? Can you end up liking it that way? “Mi Corazón y Yo” It’s like a country tune or something like that, about the truest option being the easiest one that comes from within yourself and even more so when it come to getting close to someone and giving them your love. “Arduo es el Camino” It’s the story of turbulent and tortured lovers, those eternal and classic situations that are so typical and often long-lasting. “El Hechizo Laboral de San Vicente” Here we mix Gregorian music with hip-hop as a base, something I’ve fancied doing for a long time, and talking about a love affair that never occurs at the same time. The song is also about an ancient custom in Valencia: those who live within the four crosses rest on the day of San Vicente. “El Amigo de las Estrellas” A long song for dancing a bit and also listen to a story of an outsider musician who ends up dazzling a city. I got the name from a Rudyard Kipling book, ‘Kim’, which I like very much and I wanted to pay a little homage to it. “Tierra de Hombres” A post-apocalyptic future where only men are born…can you think of anything more dangerous? The strange thing is that the title of the song comes from the name of an ONG (NGO) that no longer exists but had asked us to play a benefit concert for them. When we found out the name of the organization, we couldn’t stop singing this refrain and it soon became a song. “Todo Gigante y Blanco (Urbe Urbe)” I fancied the idea of closing the album with something referring to Valencia. It’s a clear summing up of my last few years here. Where can we see Gilbertástico play in November? I will be presenting my new album Heil Gilber live at Sala Russafa (C/ Denia, 55) in Ruzafa, Valencia on November 16th. Interview by Owl

FOOD
Focaccia alla Genovese By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Bread seems to have become public enemy number one in the health columns, but in fact it is full of vitamins, calcium and minerals and is, of course, cheap to eat and so perfect in any crisis. However, flour and water does make glue and the quickly risen, preservative-pumped, so-called ‘bread’ we are palmed off with today will of course cause your digestion to grind to a halt! So let’s get back to basics and roll out the dough. A little like the hearty Cornish pasty being invented with its thick crust for coalstained miners’ hands to take hold of while they ate, the origins of focaccia bread also comes with a tale. For it is said the ‘Focaccia alla Genovese’ was traditionally heavily salted to replace the lost minerals of the lovely, sweaty shipyard workers of Genoa as they worked in the hot sun. Possibly the wives hoped that, laced with rosemary and olive oil, the aroma of their husbands would also improve! A more risqué rumour is that their wives proved the bread in a rather personal place to keep their men faithful – but we won’t go into that here! If you are a complete die-hard health guru, you can use integral flour instead of white, but for true focaccia it has to be white to get that light, airy texture and the contrast between the salt herb crunch topping. For this recipe I used spelt yeast and flour from the organic flour mill Rincón del Segura. If you buy from a baker or supermarket, you want to ask for strong (‘fuerza’) white flour and for that kneading, you have to be strong to strengthen the protein molecules within for the structure of your bread. Of course, you can use a processor but why miss out on the best bit, which is the process of the making! As with pizza you can let your imagination go wild with the topping for focaccia, and include ingredients such as olives, red onions, walnuts, goat’s cheese and sundried tomatoes, but today we are going for the pure and simple ‘Focaccia alla Genovese’ with energizing rosemary, sea
Focaccia alla Genovese For the bread: • 1 kg strong bread flour (plus wholemeal flour extra for dusting) • 625 ml / just over 1 pint tepid water • 2 x 7 gm sachets of dried yeast • 1 1/2 dessertspoons olive oil • 30 gm / 1oz honey or sugar • 2 teaspoons ground sea salt NB: For fresh yeast dissolve in bowl with 1 teaspoon of honey and 4 tablespoons of lukewarm water. After 15 minutes the yeast should be frothy and ready to use. For the topping: • 30 gm / 1oz sea salt • Sprigs of rosemary • At least 4 tablespoons of olive oil + extra for when the bread is removed from the oven. • 2 baking trays lightly oiled
salt and olive oil. First assemble all your dry ingredients (dry active yeast, flour and salt) and mix well in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and to this add the lukewarm water, mixing it in as you go with one hand (keeping the other hand dough-free for unplanned activities such as answering the phone.) It’s a very touchy feely thing, so you have to be careful to adjust the liquid added according to how the dough is performing. We want our dough to be neither dry and crumbly, nor overly sticky. If at any moment your dough becomes too sticky, add more flour to adjust. When it is not clinging to your fingers or the side of the bowl, turn the dough out on to a lightly floured surface. To ensure a more elastic springy loaf, really try to stretch the dough as you pull it outwards, twist
La Ola Fresca Calle Músico Magenti 11, Benimaclet, Valencia. Reservations: 610026305
and push it back over itself. After about 10 minutes of stretch-and-pull exercise, you should end up with a delightful, silky smooth dough, as satisfying to pat as a baby’s bottom. Cover with a damp tea towel and leave to rise (or prove) until doubled in size, about one hour in a lukewarm kitchen. If you should miss the moment and your dough becomes over-risen don’t worry, simply knock it back and start again. Some people in fact say that focaccia should be proven three times. When your dough has doubled in size, knock it back in a most stress-releasing manner by plunging your fist into your aerated dough. Turn out on to a lightly floured work surface and knead for a few seconds. Divide into two and roll or pat out into an oval shape. Place onto your greased baking trays. Again leave to rise at cool to normal room temperature until doubled in size, about 20 –30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 220C (425F, Gas 7). With two fingers make the hallmark indentations all over the bread. If the groove remains the dough has risen enough. Drizzle with lashings of olive oil mixed with the sea salt and rosemary. Bake immediately for 15 – 20 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven (it should feel hollow to tap underneath). Place to cool on a wire tray. At this point you can reanoint your bread with more olive oil, inhale the aromas and dive in! RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
EL RINCÓN GRIEGO El Rincón Griego and its owner Stratos have been in Valencia for nearly 40 years, so not only is it the only Greek in town, it has to be one of the longest surviving restaurants as well! D and I, and our dinner companions M and I, are all pretty expert on Greek cuisine from eating out in other countries, and especially Greece, of course, but we all can actually put on a pretty good Greek feast ourselves! So to be entertained by Stratos’ staff on this wet Thursday evening and served his Greek cuisine was quite a treat, and we all came away agreeing it had been a very pleasant and interesting experience. The decor in Stratos’ little Greek corner of Valencia is very authentic, with pictures of Greek sites, columns and statues and lots of grapes adorning lights and corners of the restaurant. You could believe you have gone back in time and actually be sitting in a corner of Greece somewhere. If you eat at El Rincón Griego when Stratos is about, introduce yourselves; he is an interesting man, with many great stories to tell. His life here in Valencia has been fascinating. And so to the food, our starter was a Mezze, a selection of typical Greek tapas, which included a creamy Taramasalata (cod's roe, garlic, olive oil and parsley), a tasty slice of feta, the lovely Greek cheese, smothered in olive oil, some excellent black olives, Melitizanosalata (an aubergine dip), my all time favourite, Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), and Tzatziki (Greek yogurt, cucumber and spices). Accompanying this was a basket
of the hottest pita bread ever! Sharing dishes like these is always our favourite way of eating in any cuisine! As we were all enjoying the shared plate experience, we continued on in the same way with the next three main dishes, starting with a cod dish, Bakaliaros (cod steak, slowly baked in the oven on a bed of red peppers and garlic), served with crispy potatoes.
Closed Sunday evening Menú del día – 12€ with a choice of Greek tapas to start, main course, dessert, bread and drink. Main dishes 11€ – 16€ Wine 9€ – 12€
Next came Arni sto fourno, a mix of lamb and spices wrapped in filo pastry, with a side portion of tzatziki and some more crispy potatoes. Our final main course was Soulvaki, which was griddled skewers of pork with some more tzatziki on the side, served on a pita. We just had to finish with the Baklava, probably the most famous of all Greek pastries. Flaky pastry and sweet, sweet honey and pistachio nuts. We decided to try the Greek red wine and we were all very pleasantly surprised – we had memories of not-so-good Greek wine tried on holidays when we were all younger! It was so good we managed a second bottle of ‘Dirigido por Stratos’, a very good buy at 12€ a bottle. The wine is apparently imported from Greece into Madrid in casks, bottled there for Stratos and then shipped to Valencia. Live music on Fridays too! CHILL OUT
LA BICICLETA Over the last few years, Ruzafa has become a reference point with regards to Valencia’s growing café culture & arts scene. La Bicicleta was founded in the summer of 2010 and is run by Nieves, the lovely Spanish host and a deservedly well-respected figure in the area. We have been enjoying lazy evenings here since it first opened. Being treated to her hospitality, you have to admire her for the love that she has put into this place. Regarding the original décor, she had been collecting the furniture for a number of years, always with the idea of eventually starting her own space. And what a place it is! The long interior is a veritable mish-mash of vintage sofas, old tables and chairs from a long gone nostalgic past and a curious assortment of paintings that cover many subjects: classic cars, the Virgin Mary, bulls, Renoir and many more. Suffice to say, it is a popular place for art exhibitions and especially popular with boho women and sometimes accompanying dudes… but open to all. It’s the kind of place that really should appeal to a wide age range for its cosiness factor. It has the sense of belonging to many generations! The interior of La Bicicleta has the imaginative flavour of an eccentric Syd Barrett psychedelic song. Combine this vibe with the contents of illustrated Victorian or Edwardian books. It’s also a bit like being in a retro Francoise Hardystyle ‘60s flat… had the chic singer moved to Spain! Even going to the washroom is an adventure where it feels likes you are walking past a corner of Sherlock Holmes’ dining room to be greeted by a macramé-like entrance to the gents or ladies with yet more to ponder inside. Near the entrance to the bar, dig the retro blue fridge, an ancient vinyl record player
and the classic bike in the front window display. The mix-and-match furniture makes for a very comfortable and relaxed feel so unlike the generic, modern bars of the barrio that can leave some cold. This is kitsch and comfort with soul. You can actually while away the hours here like it was your second home. We keep coming back, which is a great sign. Valencia needs more places like this to really, properly chill out… Music is important here and the selection is cool and catchy with swing, jazz, indie, pop, soul and more. The classic song “Rolling in the Deep” from Adele was sung in La Bicicleta… but this time live by a local singer, Mary Lebone. She treated the crowd to a faithful acoustic version of the song as well as her own compositions from the comfort of one of the vintage sofas. Indeed, you will find that intimate live music gigs are becoming a growing feature here. And so to the food. We’ve always appreciated the freshness and pleasant presentation of their healthy tapas like mojama (salted tuna) con rucula y mango. You can choose fresh tapas for 4.50€ ranging from anchovies on a bed of tomatoes, guacamole with nachos, mini-hamburguesas, mini-hot dogs, pinchos mexicanos and more. They also do naughty desserts like chocolate crêpes with ice cream. We loved their fresh cheesecake the last time we went! Tasty, well-prepared salads include mozzarella with almonds, goat’s cheese with cherry tomatoes and nuts or the tasty chicken choice with vinegar honey, mustard and mushrooms, which we savoured recently over a couple of smooth glasses of Ribera del Duero red wine.

Their famous ‘Tostas frías’ or ‘Tostas calientes’ are bits of either hot or cold bread topped with delicious and lovingly prepared ingredients, including combinations with ham, goat’s cheese, cod, courgette and mushroom toppings. The texture of the mushrooms was wonderful the last week we visited, on a busy Friday night. Regarding the atmosphere of La Bicicleta, it’s become deservedly popular but it is still relaxing. It’s a fairly cultured and mostly Spanish crowd so not noisy but considerate and they are happy to be amongst their friends. Enjoy a caña or one of their exotic infusions and forget the outside world for a while… Owl and Bella La Bicicleta C/ Reina Doña Maria, 7 (near Ruzafa Market) Tel: 96 325 84 93 www.labicicletaruzafa.com Facebook labicicletaruzafa Tapas – 4.50€ Tostas – 3.50€ (hot & cold) Salads – 6.50€ Desserts – 3.50€: Tarta de queso con mermelada de arandanos (cheesecake), Crema de yogourt con salsa de cerezas (cream of yoghurt with cherry sauce), Chocolate choices too! VALENCIA FOOTBALL
Chalk and Cheese It’s getting ever more difficult to try to say something new and positive about Valencia Club de Fútbol. We are still in stop-start mode, we still don’t know who the first choice keeper is and the club still have an enormous financial debt, which will see its better players sold off. The jury is still firmly out on its decision of whether Mauricio Pellegrino is equipped to take this team forward, or at least not take it backwards. On the field of play the Chés are capable of the sublime and the ridiculous, the derby against Levante being a prime example. For the first 20 minutes, Valencia were far superior to their rivals but failed to convert their chances, a quick counterattack leading to a Martins goal that completely knocked the visitors for six and Valencia simply disappeared from the game. Levante could quite easily
have increased their lead but the game ended in a well-deserved 1-0 victory for the granotas. The next fixture was at home against Athletic Bilbao, which saw the return of ex-Valencia player Aritz Aduriz who, to give him his dues, didn’t celebrate either of his two goals against his old team. At 2-1 down, with two minutes to go, Pellegrino had to endure the whistles and waved hankies from the Mestalla crowd and he must have thought a trip to the INEM (Spanish job centre) was on the cards, but then two late goals from Tino Costa and Nelson Valdez completely turned the game around. The manager’s job was safe for the time being but there was no disguising the fact that, with eleven men on the pitch, the Basques never looked like losing. It was only the sending off of Ander that allowed the blanc i negres to get back into the match. Buoyed by their fight back, VCF travelled to Belarus to take on the surprise package of Bate Borisov. After a shaky start, the visitors began to gain a bit of rhythm but
only a magnificent save from Diego Alves kept the Chés from going one down. In the last minute of the first half, Soldado provoked a penalty that he duly converted. In the second half, two more goals from the Valencia forward ensured his Champions League hat-trick and that his team left with all three points. Could Pellegrino’s team carry on their good form, could they thump! The first half against Real Betis was one of their most atrocious performances in a long time. They were lucky to only be losing by one goal at half-time when the Valencia manager, in his infinite wisdom, realised that his team play better with Éver Banega on the pitch. The Argentinian playmaker allowed his team to get back in the game but they were unable to convert their chances. This season, Valencia’s form away from home, which was one of its strong points under Unai Emery, is woeful and is the main reason why the team are lying not much more than mid-table and look unlikely to finish in the top four this time round. Upcoming fixtures against Valladolid and
twentyfoursevenvalencia 37
Espanyol will severely test the squad’s will to win whilst two tantalising home games in the Champions League against Bate Borisov and Bayern Munich will define if VCF can progress to the next round. Atlético Madrid, unbeaten in 23 games and flying high in the league, were Valencia’s latest rivals and on paper the colchoneros were favourites to take the spoils. However, the Chés are nothing if not unpredictable. They were solid, strong and a trifle lucky to win the tie thanks to a magnificent half-turn volley from Soldado, an excellent performance from Feghouli and a bruisingly physical effort from the Valencia defence. For once, Falcao was tamed by the opposition and the only thing he could take away from Mestalla was several stitches and a head bandage. Pellegrino, along with Ricardo Costa, were both given their marching orders but VCF still ran away with a priceless victory. Sofiane Feghouli continues to attract interest, Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly preparing to make an offer for the young winger whilst, after a falling out with the manager and his staff, Jonas Gonçalves has been rumoured to have expressed his desire to move on. If Pellegrino does not manage to turn thing around soon, Valencia Club de Fútbol could well be looking for a new manager before too long, let’s just wait and see. One manager who will not be getting the sack is Juan Ignacio Martínez of Levante, who is doing a tremendous job with limited resources. After the merited derby win over Valencia, he took his team to the capital where they came away with a fortuitous 1-0 victory. Getafe probably deserved more from the game but the Levante defence and keeper, Munúa, were very solid. This is a trait that has seen the granotas progress nicely in the Europa League. Twente Enschede are the leaders of the Dutch Eredivisie and on paper promised to pose a real threat in Levante’s desire to progress further in this competition but no fear, JIM’s team ran out 3-0 victors. They carried on their winning spell when they faced Granada in the Ciutat de València stadium, finishing as 3-1 victors thanks to a double from Obafemi Martins, who it seems has played football since I was a little lad. Levante are up to fifth in the league, just three points behind Real
Madrid, who they will play against in the next few weeks as well as facing Sevilla and Deportivo La Coruña. Long may their run continue. Amunt València i força Llevant. Mark Hulton See listings page 31 for football calendar

COMMENT
All Roads Lead to Rage After a few years of seeing the shocking death toll on Spanish roads falling continuously, the figures have been climbing back up recently. Some blame the fact that the new national government’s road safety media campaigns are low-key compared to their predecessors’ (the last Conservative prime minister once made a speech after a few glasses of wine to say that nobody was going to tell him not to drink and drive). While some people jokingly take the mickey out of the British insistence on driving on the left (and the Japanese, Australians, southern Africans, Koreans, Indians...), the fact that the UK has the best road safety record in Europe should give food for thought, especially in Spain. But the real problem, of course, is not which side of the road people drive on (the Maltese have a supposedly humorous saying: “we drive in the shade”), but how they drive. For years now I have worked from home, so when I take the car it is purely for leisure. This means road rage is non-existent for me. In fact, on rainy days my schadenfreude leads me to switch on the radio in the morning and listen to the traffic reports with a smug smile on my face. But for those of you condemned to use the car on a daily basis in Spain, the following list of gripes and faults that need to be corrected will no doubt sound familiar. First, there is the question of road signage Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia
itself. Lately I’ve noticed many signs on motorways being completely obscured by overgrown foliage. I suspect this is due to economic cutbacks. Having said that, many such signs only give local directions anyhow, which are of little use to anyone – the locals already know where to go, and travellers need to know the main directions to big cities. The signs are often located in odd places, too, such as 5 metres before the exit on a main road, so you see them as you go whizzing past said exit. The functionaries who plan these locations don’t seem to have been to the place in person. In the city, you may also find your view obscured by arbitrarily placed recycling bins on corners, making it impossible for drivers and pedestrians to see each other. A word of warning to all foreign pedestrians in Spain: although the green man is flashing (Oo-er) on a zebra crossing, cars may still cross if they are turning a corner. If you are driving, remember on turning a corner that a flashing amber light – not a permanent red one – indicates that pedestrians may be crossing. Given that so many fatal accidents occur precisely on pedestrian crossings in Valencia and Spain, I am amazed that the traffic authorities still use this hazardous system. You should also be aware that many drivers seem to think that indicators are merely adornments, and
be well aware that they may turn without indicating. In fact, I believe the usual British system of MSM (Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre) is the other way around in Spain. The indicator is used mainly to justify swerving into your lane, after having done just that. The horn has a similar function. The Spanish generally drive at least 1020 km/h over the speed limit, too. You may even find drivers behind you honking their horn at your slow driving if you are only moving at the speed limit. Don’t be surprised to see police cars nonchalantly overtaking you over the speed limit, either. On Valencia’s main city streets (where the speed limit is 50 km/h), the green wave of traffic lights is suspiciously set at 70 km/h. I find it hard to believe that City Hall has not planned this deliberately. Roundabouts also seem to be a conundrum for many Spanish drivers. You may be surprised to see traffic lights actually on the roundabout itself, thereby defeating the whole purpose of a roundabout. It seems to me that this is done precisely because many drivers seem unaware of who has the right of way on such junctions. I myself had an accident on a roundabout, caused by the driver swerving off the central lane without indicating to turn off, thereby cutting me off. After arguing for several minutes
twentyfoursevenvalencia 41
COMMENT afterwards, the other driver still believed he was completely in the right. As we filled in the insurance form on my bonnet, I simply drew an accurate sketch of what had happened. He went on his way, satisfied with this, and was no doubt baffled when our insurance companies decided I was right. Such situations lead me to wonder how on earth some drivers obtained their licence in the first place. A few years ago, there was a scandal in Valencia when it was discovered that driving instructors had been accepting bribes to give the answers to the theoretical exam. Needless to say, I was not surprised and suspect that this practice may be widespread, as is copying in exams. Once again, Spain’s infamous bureaucracy may have something to do with this. To give you an idea, I recently bought a second-hand car, and this was the process: Go to PROP (government building). Park car (paying gorrillas – self-appointed, illegal car parkers – waiting on blue payand-display zone so they don’t scratch my car, in presence of police chatting amongst themselves). Queue to find out what queue I’m supposed to be in. Queue for form. Discover form costs 13 cents (I now have no change as I’ve just paid the gorrillas). Go out and get change. Queue for form. Buy form. Queue for next desk. Be given paper to pay for car owner swap. Go to bank to pay and get receipt (and pay VAT while there, remembering to take a ticket number on my way out of PROP, as it’ll be 45 minutes till I’m called again). Go back to PROP. Get a new ticket number in case the old one has already passed. Go to desk to hand in receipt. Get given bit of paper to take to Traffic Authority. Discover gorrillas have paid my extra overtime. Not sure if this is a scam or helpful, but am impressed with their ingenuity and pay them handsomely for saving me a fine. If only the civil service were as efficient as these unemployed down-and-outs. (The same police are still there, apparently chatting.) Go to garage with old car to get relevant papers signed to get tax back on old car. Go to Traffic Authority. 20 minutes to find expensive car park. Queue for form in Traffic Authority. Fill in form with info that is also on the photocopies I’m going to give them anyway (ask others waiting if they can explain the bureaucratic jargon
on the form). Take form and pay. Get given number to queue at another desk to hand in relevant papers. Hand in relevant papers, photocopies, etc. Discover at last moment that there is a small fine from 2001 outstanding from Palma, Majorca City Hall (possibly a bureaucratic error as the car’s ex-owner wasn’t even living there then), so I can’t change the owner’s name. The exowner has to call Palma City Hall (when she finds the correct number, department, etc., as such relevant info is not given by the Traffic Authority). Days later, she discovers that there is no fine; it was a mistake by a Palma civil servant. Cost: about 100€ plus two day’s work, and the process still hasn’t finished.
paths in tourist areas seem to serve the same purpose of impressing visitors.
For many foreigners, such bureaucracy is enough to put us off driving altogether, without all the aforementioned hazards. You may decide to rely on the bike, as Valencia is a fairly flat city with a good climate. There is a public bike system, Valenbisi, whose bikes some Londoners may recognize as Boris Bikes, the machines named after London’s mayor and every hairdresser’s nightmare. However, this system is far from perfect, above all because they are not replaced or distributed regularly. At specific times of day, certain areas of the city are either full of these bikes (so you can’t park) or completely empty (so you can’t get one). The police also seem far more willing to fine cyclists than motorists, too. You may also find cycle lanes that end mysteriously in brick walls or simply fade away. It seems clear that the City Council favours the car over healthier transport or pedestrians. Many believe that districts such as El Carmen with its many bars, restaurants and terraces would be spectacular without cars. The streets are narrow and thronged with people at night anyhow, so cars that insist on going through do so at about 5 km/h to the annoyance of the human cattle parting around them. Valencia was the last region in Spain whose politicians renounced their official car and chauffeur (even in the Basque country with its potential terrorist threat they did so before Valencia). The only road that has been pedestrianised in this area is on the bridge in front of the Serrano Towers. This has had a negligent effect on traffic, and pedestrians still have to cross two busy roads at either end anyhow. It seems to have been done for tourists to take nice photos of an apparently pedestrian city. Many uselessly short cycle
El Gazza
In short, it seems clear that Valencia’s rulers are car fans. Our Lord Mayor’s physique clearly indicates that she hasn’t had physical exercise since she came to City Hall two decades ago, when she parked her car that has remained rusting there ever since (she uses an official, chauffeur-driven car to go and buy her designer handbags and other essential activities). If you want to use your legs, it may be a better idea to do so in Valencia’s pretty countryside. This city belongs to the car.

The English-Speaking Taxi Driver of Valencia
VALENCIA WORLD
Victor Bermejo
Tell us something about your background and experiences. Hello to all ‘24/7 Valencia’ readers, my name is Victor. I was born in Paddington, London. My parents are Spaniards who emigrated to England in the early ‘60s. I have lived most of my life in Stockwell in South London. I went to an English primary school and also to a Spanish school in Charlton (Greenwich), which was founded by a businessman named Vicente Cañada Blanch from Burriana in the Valencia Region. He established his business in 1920 at the Covent Garden fruit and veg market. He was very successful and became one of the most important importers from Spain. He then decided to donate 100,000 pounds in 1977 to set up a school for the children of Spanish immigrants. In 1992, I married my beautiful wife Monica, who also was born in London but of an Italian family. We have two boys named Victor and Gianluca. In 2003, we decided to make the move to Valencia. It was a long-term plan as Valencia has always been one of my holiday destinations as a boy with my parents who, although they were not born in this part of Spain, they grew up here in Valencia. Regarding my work, after two years of working as a chauffeur for a Valencia businessman who I met in London when I worked as a doorman at the Grosvenor House Hotel, I then decided to become a taxi driver in 2005. It was the beginning of the America's Cup and Valencia was chosen to host this nautical event, which for me was the start of this great city’s popularity as a holiday destination. How does living in Valencia compare to London?
I love London and it will always be my city because I grew up there. Valencia is a smaller city with nearly one million in population. There are no traffic jams like London; you could cross the whole city by car in less than half an hour. Also, the city is flat and easy to walk or cycle. But for me the great difference is the weather, we have sunshine here nearly all year round. There are many trees and greenery around the city, especially palm trees that give that exotic look. Although Valencia has a river just like the Thames in London, the difference is that the Turia River has no water, which was redirected around the city due to constant flooding. The riverbed is now a long park full of trees, running and cycle tracks. One of the comments tourists make here is that Valencia is a very clean city and it is also safe. Describe a typical day. My normal working day starts at around 8.00h with breakfast at a cafeteria. I have concentrated my business on establishing long-term clients who, because of my English and professional service, I have repeated work with these loyal customers. But I also do the hard grafting driving around the entire city, like every other cab.
in English. After showing them what a beautiful city this was, the TV presenter then asked me to swear like a typical Spanish taxi driver might do in a traffic jam. I told him I don’t swear but if I did have to, I would do it in English in a way that would not offend anyone: “Wanker!” One other great experience was when a client approached the taxis standing outside the Hotel Las Arenas rank and asked in English where a street was, and I replied in English. He then returned and asked if I could take him there, I said, “Yes, no problem”. This gentleman was Dutch and had been waiting for an interpreter at the hotel who did not turn up, he then asked me if I could go with him to translate in Spanish. I said yes. When we arrived at the office, I found myself in the middle of a meeting translating back and forth with the director of this Spanish company, trying to negotiate a deal. At one point during the negotiations, the director asked me what my relation was with the Dutch company. I told him I was the translator. After everything was settled and agreed, the Spanish director invited us for lunch at the Valencia Tennis Club. During lunch, I approached the director and said to him, “You asked me earlier on what was my relationship with the company…”, and I told him I was the taxi driver. You should have seen his face! You never know who you are going to meet…
Here in Valencia, the workers stop for brunch (10.30h – 11.30h), this is very popular here. Then they re-start work right through until 14.00h, which is lunch combined with a break until 16.00h or 17.00h. The evening traffic picks up at 17.00h when the schools finish and Valencians have tea-time around 17.30h – 19.30h. Dinner here is from 21.00h. As you can see, life here revolves around the food table!!!

Two years ago I got to know Sam and Salam from Canada. When they are due to arrive, they always let me know so I can collect them from the airport, only the next time they come to Valencia they have promised me a box of live lobsters. When my Canadian friends are here in Valencia, I show them everything you could not see from a bus tour, and they have become good friends of my family. As a cabbie you get to meet a lot of different people, most the time it’s all great experiences. During the America’s Cup, I was filmed by New Zealand TV. They wanted to see Valencia from the taxi and speak
The crisis in Spain has been going on for the last four years. I think eventually we will see the light at the end of the tunnel and learn from our mistakes of the past. The more visitors we can get to the city of Valencia, the sooner we can finish this crisis.

who convince themselves that they can survive on 5 hours a night, then collapses at 9.00 pm till the following afternoon after two weeks of 10 coffees a day. I may also pop over to my friends' amazing duplex they just moved into for some coffees and cake in the sun on their gorgeous terrace, complete with gazebo, sun loungers, and paddling pool (can't wait for next summer already!!). Just last Sunday I sat and enjoyed the show as my most metrosexual friends battled with a power drill as they attempted to hang shelves then blamed it all on the drill bit. Too funny.
Many years ago, when I was still not allowed on fairground rides because of the height restrictions and still believed in the Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas, I had a lot of toys, but one of my favourites was to be found in my small collection of My Little Ponies. I can't remember the name of this particular Pony, but its gimmick was simple and very attractive to seven-year-old me – when I pulled on its beautiful shiny tail, it grew – longer and longer and longer. I remember being very protective and possessive of this toy, I certainly wouldn't let friends play with it in case they yanked too hard and left it with a bald botty. I would gently pull out the tail to its full length and brush out all the tangles so it could gallop across the hillside (read: my bedroom carpet) with its glossy mane flowing out behind it, glistening and gleaming pink and purple – obviously – in the light. Rather gruesomely, one had to click its one articulated back leg back and forth in a highly unnatural manner for the tail to re-shorten in order to begin the whole process all over again, but that was all part of the charm at that age, I suppose. And now, bizarrely enough, I have come to remember that Pony quite often recently. Not because my leg clicks up and down uncontrollably like I'm trying to kick start a Vespino – it doesn't. Oh no, its my own mane that seems to be growing just like My Little Pony's did back in the day, only it won't stop. Unfairly, I even manage to get a round of “For God's sake” and “Are you serious?” every time I meet my friends, which is about seven times a week, on average. “Are you on medication?” “Are you wearing a wig?” “Is that really your hair?” are the questions I have to continuously and begrudgingly answer, because yes, my
locks are looking luscious and yes, they have been mysteriously growing at lightning speed over the last few months. And yes, it makes absolutely no sense at all. For one, I am a haircut addict. My Mummy is the best hairdresser I know, and I drive her crazy every time I visit because I always beg her for a trim. She doesn't always oblige, poor love, but over the last year I must have had her hack at my hair at least every three weeks and sometimes even every two. Last October, I still had a pixie cut, and it is now way past my shoulders. It should not be this long. And I'm not even eating healthier (I'm eating worse, if anything, but that's another column for another month, my friend). It certainly sucks having to almost apologise for the miracle that is taking place on my very own head, but as long as I put it up in a My Little Pony-tail (sorry!) every now and then I can save myself some angry and jealous glares from my girl (and guy) pals. I am pretty sure my 'do is to come in useful this winter to cover my ears and neck with the nippy weather on its way. Being of British descent, even though I have now adapted quite nicely to these Mediterranean climes, I must admit I do rather enjoy this cooler weather. I like the autumnal colours, the crunchy leaves underfoot, the cool breeze, and to wrap my chilly neck in a cosy scarf (or a plait woven from my own hair – ha!). But most of all, I really like all the bank holidays coming up that mean I don't have to go to work. That sounds like I don't like my job! Don't get me wrong, I really do! But if I don't have to go in, it’s hardly going to draw a complaint from old Muggins here. From now until Christmas, there's so many days off I will not know what to do with myself! Mostly I will probably sleep, as I'm one of those people
In the coming weeks, I will also definitely be planning a visit or two to La Rambleta, Valencia's newest hotspot for exhibitions, shows, theatre and music. My introduction to this new venue will probably happen on the 10th of November with my buddies, when they've forgiven me for my involuntary hair growth and we head to Sens Rambleta – a musical event with a pretty cool line-up. Nick Höppner is joined on the bill by Tobias.Live and Nacho Marco, I can't wait to get down there, check the space out and really let my hair down. (Sorry, it was a pun I just couldn't avoid!) But! There's always a But. It seems that although Sens Rambleta sounds totally awesome and some of my party animal friends have already got their tickets, there is a serious conflict of agendas going on that very night in this fair City. The Feria de Muestras is hosting the Black Lotus Festival which boasts a perhaps more commercial, but no less exciting line-up, with my all-time favourites 2 Many DJs accompanied by Pendulum, and the homegrown Kostrok, not to mention the incredible Soak. Someone I've never seen on stage, LMFAO are, as we go to press, unconfirmed, but their name is emblazoned in huge black letters on the poster, so a good sign, right? If LMFAO sounds like something somebody may have written to you in a MSN Messenger conversation back in the day that you would have then pretended to understand while you Googled it on a window in the background (guilty as charged!), you'd be right, it means Laughing My Freaking Ass Off, but this month it also spells the soundtrack to an awesome party. There's no way you haven't heard 'I'm Sexy and I Know It' or 'Party Rock Anthem' and not tapped your foot just a little. Go on, admit it. November 2012 readers, coming soon to a dance floor near you. We shall need December to recuperate! Anita Darling Photo: Mateo Sanchis / Article © 2012 24/ 7 Valencia

CLUBLAND
24/7 VALENCIA two smaller bars, the club has an amazing atmosphere and a packed dance floor from Thursday to Saturday night. With the venue being such an interesting space, you can often find art exhibitions, theatre and various other creative goings on and this is a place well worth a visit.
October was another brilliant month of clubbing with international guests in town plus those clubs who had their doors closed over the summer were also back in full force. November continues the trend and as always on this club page, we take a look across Clubland in Valencia for some of the highlights of the month. We begin this month with a festival rather than a club as on Saturday, 10 November, running from mid-afternoon until 8.30h on Sunday morning, the first Black Lotus Festival (www.blacklotusfestival.com) will be taking place in the Feria de Muestras de Valencia. Created by the brains behind Club Qoqoa, they have brought together a line up from across the globe and will showcase the finest electro, dubstep, nu-rave, techno, hiphop and much more. The pick of the artists include 2 Many DJs, Pendulum & Verse and Sky Blu of LMFAO.
Staying in Ruzafa and less than a stone’s throw from its market is Excuse Me? (C/ dels Tomasos, 12) www.excusemeclub.org), which also offers a jam-packed month of events with rock ’n’ roll, space disco, electro and more. My personal pick-of-the-month guest One Fat DJ is joining the excellent resident H4L9000 on Saturday 10th. Nylon (C/Germanías, 31) is a relatively new club in the barrio with a young, sexy, arty, fun-loving crowd to match the electro sounds and modern interior.
It’s often hard to pick one night from the clubs in Valencia to highlight and this shows the strength of the guests that are attracted to the city on a regular basis. Going towards the port area of town, La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2) (www.facebook.com/latres.valencia) is certainly a venue that brings in the best and November is another packed month for the club. My pick of the month there is Friday 30th, as UK legends The Freestylers are the special guests and having seen them on numerous occasions, they will shake the foundations of the club. With three rooms covering electroclash, indie electronica and nu-disco plus live gigs from national and international bands, there’s always something good going on at weekends here. Definitely worth the shared taxi ride as it is open until 7.00h!
Barrio del Carmen is alive pretty much every day of the week with activity and there is always a plethora or choices, whether out for dinner (check the restaurant listings), drinks or a club. Many of the clubs in this area are free to get in, which makes visiting several over the course of a night something very easy to do. If a club crawl is your idea of a great night in the Carmen, free venues worth checking out on your travels are the new and sexy Carmen Club (C/ Quart, 26) (www. facebook.com/CarmenClub) with house music and more. Cafe Bolsería (C/ Bolsería, 41) draws an international crowd with funk, Latin & house music (www.cafebolseria.com) and Music Box (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 16) has danceable beats all night. Open until 3.30h at weekends, Pinball (C/ Concordia, 3) (www. pinballvalencia.com) is a great hangout for lovers of ‘60s music, funky soul and retro sounds –it is just a little off C/ Caballeros and always with free entry. Dig it! For night owls looking for a proper Valencia nightclub overlooked by many guides and is a bit of a secret… Calcutta (C/ Reloj Viejo, 6). Off the other side of C/ Caballeros on a side street, it also stays open until well past the dawn at weekends with a number of floors, national pop and international dance music and more of a Spanish, conventional club than the bohemian corners of the old town.
We move into Ruzafa to one of the newest venues in the city. Xtra Lrge Playground (Gran Vía Germanías, 21) (www.xtralrge. com) opened just over a year ago and delivers a great soundtrack of various electronic music, funk, soul, alternative and more. With a large basement club and
One of the most popular clubs in the centro histórico area is Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) (www.radiocityvalencia. es). Open every night of the week with DJs, the club is one long party and plays a vast variety of music styles from funk to electro, indie to hip-hop to world music
and everything else in between. It also has authentic live flamenco every Tuesday with the cover charge including a drink. In the Blasco Ibáñez part of town, Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) (www.facebook. com/Miniclubvalencia) have booked in two stunning guests to play alongside the super talented resident, Daniel Kyo, for November. On Friday16th, internationally renowned Spanish DJ and producer Simón García (Poker Flat) will be behind the decks and on Saturday 24th, London-based Japanese artist and Holic Trax record label boss Tomoki Tamura will return to the club after a stunning set last year. If big venue, commercial music and a younger crowd are on your clubbing list of requirements, SuperClub 95 (C/San Vicente, 95) (www.superclub95.com) is definitely a place for you. Open Thursday to Saturday, the venue offers various commercial music aimed at the dance floor for a dressed up, local and international crowd (the club is a popular destination for the Erasmus students in the city). Across the month expect various themed parties to keep things fresh and on Friday 9th, the Hangovers Nights club concept take over the club with their unique music! There is never enough room to highlight all the good parties and unique artists doing their thing on the Valencia nightlife scene. In fact, the amount of excellent clubs across the city shows just how diverse the spectrum of sounds are… and all on your doorstep! Check 24/7 Valencia club listings for many more venues in barrios across town. Get dancing, keep warm and have a great November in Clubland! Barry Eaton (www.valenciaclubnews.com)
