BENIMACLET OPENS ITS DOORS Born and bred in Benimaclet, ‘24/7 Valencia’ writer Nona B. Romero gives us an exclusive inside look into one of Valencia’s most happening barrios. History says that Benimaclet was an independent hamlet of Muslim origin, situated on the outskirts of Valencia and conquered in the 13th century by the Christian King Jaume I. Benimaclet managed to maintain its independence until 1882, when it then became a district of Valencia. It retained its own district town hall until 1972, when it was fully absorbed as a barrio on the outskirts of the city of Valencia. Agriculture has been one of its economic foundations since the barrio came into being. The boundaries of the fields are marked off by the roads, paths, trails and irrigation canals. Thanks to the participation of residents of the barrio after months of mounting tensions, a system of urban gardens have been established that conceive of agriculture as being in tune with the young, urban rhythms of the barrio. Situated to the north of Valencia’s centre, Benimaclet is one of Valencia’s barrios

with the most individual character. You can arrive here by metro via Línea 3 (direction of Rafelbunyol), the tram or the 70 and 10 buses. It’s truly one of the most well-connected and accessible barrios in Valencia. The life of the barrio has changed with the arrival of students, especially Erasmus and Spanish university students and young families, too. Thanks to these changes, Benimaclet has risen from its ashes. In Benimaclet, we can find classic local bars that have seen the area evolve over the years including Tam Tam (C/ Emilio Baró, 20), with a unique terrace and a bohemian atmosphere. If we then head in the direction of C/ Barón de San Petrillo we will find Terra (C/ Barón de San Petrillo, 9), a collective space characterized by a strong social conscience and deeply involved with the local culture. Just in front of us in C/ Barón de San Petrillo, 14 lies the emblematic building of El Musical de Benimaclet, founded in 1910. There are few locales that have managed to re-invent themselves as well as this one has, with an ample programme of events, screenings of documentaries and a varied menú del día, too. You can find all of their events on their Facebook page. Finally, one of the spots

with most character and tradition in the barrio is the legendary El Glop located in Plaza Benimaclet 1, an ideal place to enjoy a few beers in an alternative and different atmosphere. Another classic meeting point is La Bodega (C/ Alegret, 2) with a relaxing little terrace and really charming interior, it’s a unique bodega to enjoy a glass of wine in good company. Benimaclet is a barrio very much connected to culture and proof of this has been the opening and success of various multi-discipline spaces over the last few years. One of the most interesting ones is Kaf Café (C/ Arquitecto Arnau, 16). As you enter you will find board games, at the bar there is a list of exotic teas to choose from and you can also enjoy tapas while listening to great music. Their free library is immense. What better homage to Franz Kafka than this wonderful café-bar! They also offer weekly live concerts, talks and imaginative crochet lessons every Monday. If you’re looking for a more minimalist and eclectic hang out, Chico Ostra (C/ Músico Belando, 15) is your best option. The white walls and varied interior complements well the selection of interesting books and second-hand clothes on sale. Don’t miss Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

out on this place, they do great mercadillos that are a lot of fun and photographic exhibitions that do not leave anyone indifferent. They offer snacks, sandwiches, a carta of teas, as well as locally brewed, traditional Valencia beer. Every Sunday morning you can enjoy a good session of gin & tonics here, too! Another hidden surprise is Café Cronopio (C/ Barón de San Petrillo, 46). Their main focus is recycling and you’ll find yourself at home here. The atmosphere is really warm, there is a stage, library, games and they organize concerts and exhibitions. Don’t miss out on their beers, cold meat dishes and exquisite tostas. You are sure to return here! In C/ Enrique Navarro 8, just before you get to the El Musical building, you’ll find London, a local with a British vibe, which offers intercambios in EnglishSpanish. Good music, nice vibes and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It’s just one of the treasures of the barrio that will surprise you. There are two other options on the other side of the tranvía; one is Café de las Luces, (C/ de la Guardia Civil, 4) situated in the park of the Guardia Civil. The interior, decorated by students from the Fine Arts College, is magnificent and the terrace is next to the huge park. It has a wide variety of infusions and cocktails and a mellow vibe. The other option takes us to C/ Daniel Balaciart 3, next to Av. Primado Reig, it’s Café de l’Alba, the unmistakable café del piano. It’s a classic café-bar with

benches, cushions and it’s perfect for a midday beer after having visited the local rastro. If you’re visiting Benimaclet at dinnertime, you’re going to have a fair few to choose from. In C/ Reverendo Rafael Tramoyeres, you’ll find up to three restaurants. The first is the asador (grill-house) Viejo Barrio, (C/ Reverendo Rafael Tramoyeres, 5) a small restaurant with a lot of personality and good service, too. You will love the variety and quality of their meats and if you prefer something lighter, their pumpkin ravioli is a treat. Just next door to this, the famous little Italo-Argentinean pizzeria-restaurant Bajo Flores (also C/ Reverendo Rafael Tramoyeres, 5) is a recognized classic of Benimaclet. Its romantic atmosphere will transport you; do not miss the opportunity to try their provolone or empanadas. Remember to reserve here because their pizzas have proved to be a great success, it’s been here for eight years and there must be a good reason for this. If we continue on to the corner of C/ Baron de San Petrillo, there is an original crepería called Uma Crepes & Pastas (C/ Reverendo Rafael Tremoyeres, 11) really worth checking. The atmosphere is colourful and urban and immediately captivating. Their starters are delicious and the choice of crêpes on offer makes it difficult to decide which one to savour. The proof of Benimaclet’s increasing choice of things to do in the last few years

is reflected in bars like La Gramola, En Babia, El Club de los Poetas, Fusionarte, Swan, El Carabasser, La Kañamera, Biocafé, L´Esplai (hamburguesas caseras), La Ola Fresca, Ameba… multi-discpline spaces and open to all. Also don’t forget Goatxa, with naïf-style shirts, fun and at reasonable prices, too. La Alegre Conchita is more than just a sex shop for women, it has workshops and activities, too. La Traca is a really impressive bookshop and enjoy La Coqueta, a new concept of hairdressing in the barrio with a relaxed, eclectic atmosphere. If you would like more information about these places and their agendas, you can find up-to-the-minute details of daily activities as well as emerging artists in www.benimacletentra. org. Another interesting link is www. lomejordebenimaclet.com, where you can find a lot of offers, like MagaCim, the television project for children of the barrio. Finally, we can say that Benimaclet is not just a market garden. Culture and tradition are working together thanks to various projects that have injected life into a very special barrio, where there is room for all alternatives.

VALENCIA MUSIC

DIOUKE

DIOUKE Interview with Matthieu Saglio of Diouke Who are Diouke? A few years back, not long after Abdoulaye N’Diaye arrived in Spain, we got together to jam and try a few things out musically. At the first session, we spent nearly four hours just tuning the kora! We connected right away and soon started playing with the percussionist Osvaldo Jorge. Later we invited the pianist Alex Conde to join the project. The sound was quite electric with keyboards and drums and was named Ecumene. After a while, the project cooled down a bit and we started it up again two years later with another concept in mind and the addition of Carlos Sanchis on accordion and harmonica. The idea was to go for an acoustic sound this time round and I believe it’s a really attractive combination. We added various guest star musicians to this ‘base trio’ for the recording: the Israeli percussionist Itamar Doari (who has collaborated with Avishai Cohen), drummer Jesús Gimeno (veteran of the Valencia band Jerez-Texas), Cuban saxophonist Roque Martínez (a wild sax player) and singers Thaïs Morell (from Brazil) and Damilola and Morenike Otusemade (from Nigeria). The truth is that I love seeing such a disparate mix working so well on the same record with such natural fluidity. What are influences?

your

inspirations

Basically, the original songs are by Abdoulaye with the exception of one of mine (“Miba”) and one by the trio (“Malengue”). The arrangements were done by Carlos and myself. I’ve always been fascinated by Abdoulaye’s natural mastery in composing melodies and riffs that are both simple and very seductive and yet also open to a lot of instrumental interpretation and interaction. I believe that the magic of African music is there: this ease in combining with everything. How do you find Valencia as a place to play live music? Valencia is very ambivalent. On one side of the coin, it is a hotbed for musicians and groups playing at a high level in many different styles. This is something about Valencia that is very well known all over Spain. It also has an ample audience who are very open to many different types of music and a dedicated, warm audience for live music, too. However, despite these supposedly ideal conditions…there is a total lack of support from the institutions. Musicians are really living through disturbing times that make it very difficult for them to make a living from their profession. The festivals are disappearing one after the other. Cultural Centres are left without a budget for programming concerts, as if they were empty shells. And the smaller halls are fighting day-to-day to survive.

and

Where can we see Diouke play in Valencia in 2013?

I believe that what is important is what each musician brings with their sensibility, creativity and musical baggage. The production work consists more in filling out, solidifying and giving unity to the group’s sound. The idea was to use Abdoulaye’s material, which is very African, as a musical base but to give it a quite open treatment.

We play the Instituto Francés (C/ Moro Zeit, 6) in the Zona Carmen on March 1…with the whole band! Take us through the album “Diouke”: Lima A very soft, acoustic ballad.

Matthieu Saglio's other band ‛Jerez Texas’ in concert 8, Friday and 9 Saturday, February @ Sala Russafa C/ Denia 55 23.00h 10 euros

Fallou Gallas The album’s hit. It's a party track, with a happy chorus and lots of percussion. Malengue A composition written by the three of us, with harmonica and Caribbean rhythms. Miba A song of mine that is rather distinct from the rest of the album. It’s jazzier and completely instrumental, with keyboards and the collaboration of Cuban saxophonist Roque Martínez. Yema Like a piercing primitive blues, full of melancholy. Artou It starts out almost mystically, as if the cello and Abdoulaye’s voice were recorded in a cathedral. And suddenly it goes more uptempo and segues into a devilish rhythm. Chouli A sweet and relaxing little ballad. Mame Yi Based on a traditional riff, with voice and chorus. A classic example of a multi-cultural fusion. Toubanka The final ballad of the record. Based on a traditional ballad for kora and featuring Brazilian singer Thaïs Morell to finish off the album. You can hear the whole record on www.matsag.com/diouke Diouke are Abdoulaye N’Diaye: kora, voice Matthieu Saglio: Violoncello, vocals Carlos Sanchis: accordion, harmonica, keyboards Interview by Owl / Article © 2013 24/7 Valencia

La Ola Jamaicana... Jamaican Beef Patties By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Breathe a sigh of relief, escaping winter chills, we set our sails for the Caribbean to the balmy island of Jamaica, where this month they celebrate the anniversary of the birthday of the legendary Bob Marley, who died 32 years ago. Here, roughly 7,500km from Cornwall in the southwest of Britain, in the westernmost part of Jamaica we find another county of Cornwall and identical places names such as Falmouth, Truro and Trelawney. Welcome or not, Cornwall had a decisive imprint on 18th-century Jamaica. With the mining of tin came the arrival of the immigrant Cornish miners and, as the saying goes in Cornwall, wherever there is a mine there is a Cornishman and wherever there is a Cornishman, there is a pastie. Hence the dispersion of variations of pasties around the world, including Mexico and Argentina, which brings us to our recipe of the month; similarly wrapped in crimped pastry and filled with beef, the Jamaican Beef Pattie. A pastie with a strong kick of Jamaican spice! “Ansome” as they say in Cornwall or “bashy” as they say in Jamaica! First make the pastry. Mix the flour, salt, baking powder, curry powder and turmeric in a large bowl. Chop the fats into small pieces and then, either using a mixer or with your hands, rub the fat into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the water bit by bit, mixing with the blade of a knife so you can see how it is coming together. Pat the mixture into a round bowl shape. Wrap with clingfilm and leave to rest in the fridge for half an hour while you prepare the filling. If you have minced beef, ground it with a food processor. Chop the scallions or the medium onion, garlic and Scotch

Jamaican Beef Patties Pastry • 450 gm / 1lb plain flour • 115 gm / 4oz butter • 115 gm / 4oz lard (manteca – you can find this in most supermarkets) • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon curry powder, medium hot • 1 teaspoon turmeric • 1/2 cup ice cold water • 1 beaten egg for coating Filling • 1lb ground beef • 1 medium onion • 4 scallions (or 1 more medium onion) • 2 stalks fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons ground thyme • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper (chilli habanero / or ordinary chilli / or 1 tablespoon curry powder) • 2 cloves garlic • 1 cup water • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp pepper • 1 tsp paprika • Pinch of sugar • Ground nutmeg

over and press down the edges with a fork to seal. Place your semi-circle patties on a greased baking tray, coat with beaten egg and bake in the oven for around 35 minutes or until golden brown. Of course you can make vegetarian versions of these using texturised vegetable protein (TVP) or they are also delicious with grated cheese, coriander, chopped spring onions and chilli. However, don’t serve your vegetarian friends pastry made with lard – they won’t like you! Change the lard for all butter.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CARPE DIEM Is it me, or has it been cold over the past month or so? I know we haven’t had the snow and freezing temperatures of northern Europe but the winds have certainly seemed icy. The night of our latest restaurant review was one of those windy and cold nights. Our restaurant this month is Carpe Diem, in a small street between the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and C/ Colón (Valencia's Town Hall square and its main shopping street, respectively). It bills itself as a Mediterranean which specializes in Spanish & Italian cuisine like rice dishes, pasta and pizza. It is actually next door to its sister, a pizza restaurant, which only opens on high holidays and during the summer. It is their ovens that are used for their excellent pizzas. I booked the table for 21.30h and arrived on the dot to find D already sitting at a table with a large glass of wine, olives and a slice of pizza, chatting to a waiter and a girl who was swaddled in thick coat, huge scarf and mittens, and carrying a tray of pizza slices to hand out to passers-by. I took my seat and the very friendly and bubbly, Diego, welcomed me and offered me a drink and a slice of pizza, too. He then told us that he wanted to choose our menu for us. We gladly agreed. To start, a crispy medley of freshly fried fish; calamari, prawns and sepia (cuttlefish), all lightly battered tempura style, with lashings of alioli – garlic mayonnaise. Following this was an interesting pasta from the south of Italy; Spaghetti Nduja, a very fine pasta with an extremely hot and spicy sauce, salsa Casera (home-made), made from tomato and a hot sausage from Calabria. We are good with spicy, but in

case we wanted it hotter there was a slice of the sausage (a little like the Spanish sobrasada to look at) on a side plate IF we needed it! It was surprisingly spicy and we wondered how the sensitive Spanish palate would cope with it, and discovered that the Spanish tend to order the Pizza Diablo made with the same sausage, but not the spaghetti. Our next and main course was Arroz meloso bogavante, a soupy terrine of delicate tomatoey rice with lobster pieces to crunch and pick at. A perfect complement to the fiery pasta that came before. After all that fried fish, pasta and rice we were pretty full and could quite easily have stopped there. But there was another surprise in store; we were presented with an enormous sundae dish of hot chocolate and hazelnut sauce, topped with some fabulous crunchy twirls of goodness, which turned out to be deep-fried strips of pizza base. Funnily enough, we were able to polish it off quite easily. Carpe Diem is an attractive place to eat or just to have a drink at their long bar and it was doing good business on the night we were there despite the wind and cold. At least two of the tables were regulars who were on first name terms and there were more, very hardy regulars on the ample terrace having drinks and ciggies (thank God I no longer smoke – particularly in winter). The food is great and the service is friendly, attentive and the entire dining experience is fun. We drank a very palatable locally grown and bottled Vegalfaro, a red wine from UtielRequena. The wine list is small and neat with wines from Spain and Italy. Prices range from 15.50€ for the house wine to 36€ and cavas are available from 21€ to champagne at 60€.

variety of Italian dishes. It was unusual to see one of my favourite Spanish dishes, Roast suckling pig, on a menu in Valencia for 14€ and we will definitely be going back to try that. CHILL OUT

La Comisaría – Tapas y Copas Ilegales Set in the centro histórico of Valencia, La Comisaría has only been open since 2011 but has become so popular it seems to have been around much longer. The clientele ranges from 18 – 70 years old and you can expect to pay between 15 – 22€. Good value for sharing great tapas, good wine and pleasant company, too. The staff is truly cosmopolitan and includes British, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Turkish and Romanian in their team. Indeed, the head chef and co-owner Eduardo Phillips Blanco comes from the prestigious two and three star Michelin world. He’s a dynamic, creative and multilingual cook and it’s no surprise that La Comisaría is proving to be a hit with both locals and visitors. It’s growing by the month. Just check the packed terraza at the weekends. As winter slowly seeps into spring, there’s a wonderful extended terrace to enjoy outside. Via video, you can actually see the chefs creating your dishes from the open kitchen projected live onto the wall outside! For those who prefer the cosy atmosphere upstairs or downstairs, you can also watch the chefs combining fresh ingredients to make your tapas via a colour television screen. It’s a great idea and just one of the things that makes La Comisaría unique and innovative in Valencia. So, to the food…La Comisaría is currently adapting its carta but we can give you a good idea of what to expect by telling you what we savoured on a mellow midweek night. Settling for the intimate upstairs we let Ana, our friendly and informed host, choose our dishes and we began with ‘Tomate valenciano en tres texturas’, which were delicious, very fresh, sliced and cubed Valencia tomatoes and marinated tomatoes with a tomato and garlic foam topping. A generous portion, too. It’s going to be four textures by the time you read this! Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

The presentation was lovely, we dined with rectangular plates, which gave the visual aspect of presenting the food and appreciating each dish as a little work of art. Indeed, we slowly savoured the delicious ‘Chupa Chups de langoustino con dip guindilla dulce’, which was a crunchy and seductive selection of prawns with a lovely chili sauce to dip with. The original and Mediterranean-influenced carta has some nice and frequent Asian choices for all tastes, whether you’re a vegetarian, fish lover or prefer a meat dish with an original twist. Nice, healthy bread to accompany your meal, too. Dining out with the 24/7 Valencia team at La Comisaría was good friend Susanna Gregorian. She’s a first violinist with the Palau de les Arts classical music orchestra. Refreshingly modest for such a world-class musician and very well-travelled food lover, her favourite dish of the night was ‘Sardina ligeramente ahumada con vinagreta templada de tomate, aceituna y cítricos’. It was a delicately prepared, lovingly presented, succulent lightly smoked sardine dish, with olives and dressed with a tomatoey and lemony vinaigrette. In her words: “Delightful!” For our meat dish, we enjoyed ‘Pollo campero con perfume hindú y con toque BBQ’, which was a lovely organic chicken with an Indian flavour and hint of barbecue. It was filling and a lovely way to round off the four imaginative tapas dishes we had slowly savoured with a fine bottle of red wine, a Pasiego from UtielRequena (Crianza 2005). We couldn’t resist the offer of sharing a delicious La Comisaría dessert. Their ‘Textures and temperatures’ dessert changes every day but tends to include chocolate, fruit, cake and ice cream…ours certainly did! The time flew by and we spent over three hours enjoying delicious and varied tapas, really good Spanish wine, pleasant and informed service and a hip and warm interior…

The music soundtrack was wonderfully eclectic and at an unobtrusive volume, too. Starting off with the bluesy soul of Ray Charles, segueing into a modern ragga groove, flowing with funky electronica, the night ended memorably with some great Cuban salsa that got us dancing upstairs after midnight as we were the last to leave! Incidentally, La Comisaría specializes in cocktails like their own Mojito La Comisaría, a prime selection of excellent gin & tonics and caipirinhas, too. A memorable night out. We’re going back soon, which is always a good sign! 24/7 Valencia team La Comisaría – Tapas y Copas Ilegales Plaza Árbol, 5 (corner C/ Baja) Tel: 96 391 07 39 www.lacomisaria.com Zona Carmen Open Tuesday – Thursday 14.00h – 16.00h, 20.30h – 24.00h Friday – Saturday 14.00h – 16.00h, 20.30h – 01.30h Sunday 14.00h – 16.00h Closed Sunday night / Monday 6 plates with glass of wine: 15€ Menu of the day: 12€ (3 starters, one rice dish, dessert or coffee) Weekend menu of the day: 15€ Group menus: 20€ (All in, 4 plates, drink, coffee, dessert) Vegetable dishes: 7.50€ – 8.50€ Fish dishes: 9.50€ – 12€ Meat dishes: 8.50€ – 9.50€ Red wines (including Valencia, Rioja, Ribera del Duero): 11.50€ – 16.50€. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Efecto Valverde The sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino at the beginning of December 2012 meant that Valencia had to look for a new manager to take over an unruly dressing room and a club somewhat in disarray. The man they chose was Ernesto Valverde who, whilst having success in the Greek league, had not really set the world on fire with his managerial appointments in Spain. However, in the seven league games VCF have played since he took over, they have won five of them, which is a much better record than his predecessor. His reign began away against Osasuna, never an easy venue to visit, and thanks to a second-half goal from Soldado, El Txingurri, as Valverde is nicknamed, started with a three point haul. A few days later Valencia faced the same team in the Copa del Rey, when another strike from Soldado and a rare goal from Dani Parejo made

the visitors favourites to go through to the next round. On the crest of a wave after back-toback victories, poor Rayo Vallecano came to Mestalla; the Valencia media were beginning to speak of the “efecto Valverde”. As always, they got it wrong, as a schoolboy error from Tino Costa gifted the visitors a soft penalty that ex-Valencia player Chori Domínguez scored to hand Rayo their first victory in Mestalla after thirteen attempts. A week later the blanc i negres had a chance to redeem themselves before their fans as Getafe paid a visit to Valencia. After seven minutes Valverde’s team were 2-0 up thanks to Jonas and Soldado, only to see Getafe to pull one back. A goal from Ricardo Costa meant that the home team went into the break 3-1 to the good but a second-half strike from yet another ex-Valencia player, Alexis, meant that the last 30 minutes were a little nervy for VCF until substitute Valdez put the game to bed. After a two-week Christmas break, the team

travelled away to Granada. It seemed that too many turrones had been consumed over the festive season as they struggled to get into the game. Even when Granada went down to 10 men they still managed to gain the lead but Valencia’s numerical superiority began to show. Piatti played his best game so far for Valencia and his second-half performance was sufficient to claim the maximum points thanks to goals from Jonas and Piatti himself. Four days later in Mestalla, the return leg of the Copa del Rey saw VCF progress after seeing off Osasuna with a 2-1 victory, which meant they faced Real Madrid in the next round. Before they met the meringues, they had to take on Sevilla at home and a double from hotshot Soldado got them a victory over the Andalusians. This meant that El Txingurri’s team went in to the triple-header with Real Madrid with some confidence. The away Cup tie saw Valencia dominate their mighty opponents yet still lose 2-0. The Chés had no one to blame except themselves for failing to take their chances,

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

of which there were many, and the referee who invented fictitious offsides when Valencia were about to score. The less said about the league tie in Mestalla, the better. Suffice to say that at half-time Madrid were 5-0 to the good and that was the final result. Valverde’s tactic of pushing his defence forward backfired terribly as Özil and Di María found all the space they needed to destroy the Chés. The return leg of the Copa ended in a 1-1 draw, which meant that Valencia were eliminated. Their next league game would be crucial for their season as their confidence was shattered after the drubbing they had received at the hands of Real Madrid. That game was against lowly Deportivo Coruña. After one minute Valencia were one up thanks to Jonas but the Galicians struck twice to take a 2-1 half-time lead. In the second half, Depor were down to ten men and Valdez levelled the tie whilst a late, late goal from Ricardo Costa secured an unexpected victory for VCF. The match was also memorable for the league return of Sergio Canales after his lengthy injury and a great performance from Bernat. The next league encounter saw runaway league leaders Barçelona visit Mestalla where they literally ran into a brick wall.

Strong in defence and solid in midfield, Valencia harried and hit the Catalans and were unlucky not to win the game, a silly penalty gifted by João Pereira allowed the culés to get back into the tie and it ended with a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the club is wracked by internal disputes. After the bizarre appearance of an unknown Costa Rican businessman promising to buy the club, now former player Fernando has his heart set on the Presidential hot seat. Unfortunately, his proposals look like hot air, he offers no money and no names, saying only that if he is elected President an unknown investor will solve Valencia’s problems. If his bid is true, he should put the money on the table and show all his cards, instead of causing problems that the team he purports to love can hardly afford. At this moment in time, VCF is property of the Valencia local government, who have assumed control of a large block of shares in the club whilst a financial solution is sought.

have only managed one victory but thanks to their phenomenal start to the season they are still high up in the table. They are gearing up for their Europa League tie against Olympiacos whilst in the league they will face Málaga, Real Sociedad and Osasuna. Carriage, Car and Train The book Arroz y Tartana (Rice and Carriage) by the great Valencian writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez unfortunately depicts some Valencians as rather vain and snobby (in his day, he was far more acclaimed in the USA than back home, though most people now love him in his homeland as one of their own, possibly because they haven’t read his books). There are characters in his pages who seem to be willing to do anything to keep up an appearance of wealth in hard times. Thank goodness they don’t behave like that today, I hear you say. But I fear you may be mistaken. A friend of mine was telling me just the other day of a family that has fallen upon hard times like so many in this seemingly endless economic crisis in Spain. Apparently, they have been forced to go to local dining halls set up for the poor to get a hot meal. However, their daughter has been chosen as this year’s Fallera Mayor (the main falla lady or girl chosen to represent the local falla organisation). They are overjoyed at the news, despite the fact that the Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

beautiful fallera dress she will have to wear will cost thousands of euros. No, that’s not a typo; those dresses really do cost that much, and before the Fallas celebrations you still see people queuing to buy them in these dire times. It’s just as well that the Fallas are a relatively recent phenomenon, appearing after the times of Arroz y Tartana. Perhaps this attitude explains why many Valencians still do not seem to have learned the important lesson of the current economic crisis – that you should never spend more money than you have, or at least never borrow more than you can reasonably pay back. I have many friends who are still talking of doing up their house, or buying a new car even though they have one that goes perfectly well, amid the current shaky economic situation. Just for the sake of it. To show the neighbours. A walk around my humble, working-class neighbourhood clearly bears this out: Audi Quattros, BMWs, Land Rovers, Mercedes…judging by the vehicles, it could be mistaken for Kensington or

Bel Air if not for the prevalent smell of urine and the dog turds, spittle, litter and seedy local shops, cafés and Chinese bazaars typical of such a working-class area in Valencia. So where do these people get the money for these modernday carriages? There are various possibilities: maybe they take out bank loans (which they may not be able to pay back) or maybe they work in the huge, mushrooming black market, for example. There is a very worrying side to this attitude of putting up a good front after four years of recession with no light at the end of the tunnel. One has the dreadful feeling that if the Spanish ever come out of this economic crisis, they will simply go looking for another one by popping into the bank for a loan for a new Jaguar and a kitchen with marble worktops and gold taps. Moreover, after years expecting and hoping that Valencians would wake up to their regional government’s giddying waste of public money, I have

prestigious train to come to their towns, in spite of the fact that it does not seem to bring the promised economic benefits. One of the most ludicrous examples of this madness is to be found – you guessed it – in Valencia. finally realised that in fact we have a government here that I fear is truly representative of its people. It seems perfectly in tune with black market finances (perhaps the most politically corrupt region in Spain) and prefers to spend our money on grandiose projects like the City of Arts and Sciences, whose maintenance costs alone would alleviate the massive cutbacks this region’s government is making in health care and education. Said government is now technically the proud owner of Valencia Club de Fútbol, too, as a consequence of endorsing the equally debt-ridden entity, though it can’t seem to pay for medicine or schooling. Not long ago, the BBC’s Paul Mason went on the ‘Squandering Tour’, a bus journey around Valencia that explains the devastating level of waste in public spending in recent years on such ostentatious projects, of which my regular readers will be well aware. He showed a school that has been waiting for funding for years, where the students study in shipping containers for want of a proper building. Beyond, one can see the huge, stunning opera house, which is now hardly used and already looking flaky (its weekly maintenance costs come to half the yearly budget of the Valencia Institute of Music and there was already a perfectly good opera venue 500 metres away). The curious thing about the Spanish media is that whenever Spain gets talked about in the foreign media, this becomes news in itself here. Mr.

Mason’s report has already been attacked by the right-wing Spanish media. If only such journalists would devote more time to attacking the politicians who have helped bring this situation about. Again, one senses an acute sensitivity as to what others are saying about them, and the need to give a good impression above all else. But maybe this immodest insistence on having the best that money can buy without actually having the money to buy it is not limited to this region’s people and politicians. A classic example to be seen all over Spain is the AVE, the high-speed train. The first line to be inaugurated was not between Madrid and Barcelona, as one would expect common economic sense to dictate. It was between Madrid and Seville (coincidentally, the home town of Spain’s president and other highranking politicians at the time…). After a few years, it soon became clear that the AVE was too expensive for most people to use regularly, and it led to the elimination of ordinary, slower rail journeys to smaller towns. The AVE trains themselves have about 60% passenger occupation, compared to France’s almost 100% with their TGV. Spain’s passenger-to-track ratio is also at 2.8 passengers/km, compared to 41 in France. But has this stopped regional governments all over Spain from jumping on the AVE bandwagon? Hell, no. This train is in the Champions League of trains, so they all have to try to hop on it. Regional governments everywhere have been vying to get this

High up in the province’s interior amid vineyards, there are two sleepy little towns best known for producing some great wines – Utiel and Requena. These two towns just happen to lie on the path between Valencia and Madrid, so when the AVE fever caught Valencia, they obviously didn’t want to miss out. As there are only about 15 km separating the two towns, the competition for the poisoned trophy was fierce. After much bickering, a Solomonic decision was taken: the AVE station was built between the two towns, smack in the middle of nowhere. This means that if you wish to take the AVE to either of the towns, you must also get a mini-bus from the station or call for a taxi. The platforms are now bare and the car park with a 250-vehicle capacity is virtually empty. This new station is already reminiscent of Edward Thomas’s Adelstrop, albeit with a 12.4 million euro decor and a 21st century high-speed train rolling in now and again, with nobody getting on or off. Looks great, though. El Gazza

VALENCIA WORLD with the public in Valencia, keep the faith and let’s make things better together! How did you find living in London?

Paquito

Paquito of ‛Las Torres’ Tell us about your background. I’m in love with the hospitality industry (hostelería) in all its variety: hotels, chains, restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs, discos, and big events, too. I’ve been involved in this world since I was a boy and it continues to fascinate me every day. It also gives me the chance to explore my other passion, which is travelling. My first experience was in London in the summer of 2004, after working in my family’s bar in Spain for six years. I was only supposed to go to England for three months in the summer but I ended up staying a year! After a year in “the city with the worst weather in the world”, I went to Ibiza to recuperate and started to work during the summer seasons in Ibiza and the Canary Islands. During the winter, I was working in the ski resorts of Formigal and Baqueira. After these rewarding experiences, I decided to go to Germany to learn the language and for the level of professionalism there, too…as well as for a wonderful German girl, Judith. We now live together in Valencia. After being involved in the hospitality industry for nearly 20 years and taking a brief break in Italy to learn ‘Flair bartending’ with Nicolas Saint-Jean and Roberto Cuda, I’m back in my native Valencia. The reason for my return is the opportunity to run a traditional Spanish bar and the challenge of changing it into a really good bar with a modern flavour, surrounded by friends and good professionals. I want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that the best way to grow personally is to travel and learn different languages and cultures. And a message to all the professionals working

As I said before, the worst thing is the weather. It’s possible to be cold, windy, rainy, sunny, cloudy, and rainy again and even snowing… all within the space of one bus journey. However, in inverse proportion to the unpleasant weather is the deeply enriching cultural experience of living in this city, which means that no one can really forget London or think about it without feeling real passion and nostalgia, too. I had the great fortune to work in the Meliá White House Hotel in Regent’s Park and Club Annam in Whitechapel, two incredible places with top professionals! That’s where I got the idea to dedicate myself to the hospitality industry. We shared a room, my German girlfriend and myself, in a fivebedroom house for 800€ a month! I made a lot of friends in London and had some exciting experiences there, too…without forgetting to learn English and the art of being a barman. It’s a city that you are obliged to visit but I don’t think it’s the best choice right now for the majority of young people looking to emigrate to the Englishspeaking world…the world is enormous!

sure that your visit here will be a great experience. We also speak English if your Spanish doesn’t go past “Dos cervezas, por favor”, or if you want to order something else! Our trademarks are quality products, friendly service, a relaxed ambience, and the best international music. We also have great brands like San Miguel and an ample selection of beers, an exquisite African coffee in Kilimanjaro from Cafés Brasilia and our premium drinks come from Bodegas Momparler to complement our breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. At the front, our kitchen chef Alejandro García (La Ferradura) combines tasty tapas with homemade recipes and a well-prepared carta of international drinks. None of this would be so much fun without our clientele, an agreeable bunch who like to have a good time here with friends. If that’s your attitude, too, then this is the bar for you. How do you find Valencia as a place to live? Valencia is a fantastic city, with very agreeable weather and a wonderful variety of magnificent things to do for visitors. The Malvarrosa beach area, the Mercado Central, the gardens in the Turia riverbed, the Bioparc, wonderful parks, ancient and modern architecture, a unique cuisine and some quality products make a visit to Valencia essential for any traveller of whatever background. The great nightlife completes this broad range of options to encourage you to stay longer and try to live the whole experience. And while everything can be improved, this is a city with a wonderful potential and a great future ahead of it. Tell us about Bar Las Torres. Las Torres has a simple concept: to treat each day as if it was our first day and use all our international experience to be innovative for the benefit of our customers. WOMAN

February is my both my favourite and most detested month of the year. It is the best month because it heralds a time for many a local and foreign fashion week, therefore providing catwalk and streetstyle inspiration a-plenty, is shorter than any other month which means less working days but just as many weekends (score!), but most significantly, houses the most important day in the calendar, My Birthday. Since I was born, birthdays have always been a Big Thing in my house. My parents both come from huge families so decided right from the getgo to make it a really special occasion for each of us each year, a traditional guilt-free pampering and spoiling for one whole day, from yummy breakfasts to favourite dinners, and most often as a child and even now up into my late twenties, things often escalated into a whole entire Birthday Week. There's only two of us sisters, so it really was and is quite unnecessary as it’s not as if either of us ever felt left out, but if I'm honest, I'm sure I could have milked the situation into a Birthday Month, but my Mother's big day is but a fortnight after mine so we must have a little break from celebrating in the middle somewhere. This year I am torn as to what to do for my birthday. As a group of friends, it is fair to say we do really like to party. Not in a 1990s, off-our-heads way, let me hastily add, but in a let’s-have-a-few-drinksand-take-over-the-dancefloor manner, because we do love to shake it and move it and drop it like it's hot. Sadly, Valencia, in my humble opinion, has

intention of buying, and not haggling for a huge round mirror and a gorgeous old clothes chest we were so desperate to buy we were afraid to lose. All very bizarre with the mirror as the guy tried to haggle with me before I even opened my mouth – “Only 20 euros, but for you, 10, darling” – but super exciting as it matches two mirrors I previously bought at the Rastro a few years back. I'm making quite a collection! We then sat for hours on a terrace after, drinking hot coffee and eating toast, rather proud of our purchases, but even more so of not being hungover and for wearing our sunglasses for entirely practical reasons (not just to cover up party bags).

dropped the ball over the last few months when it comes to nightlife. Without wishing to offend, but then that would be assuming these people can read and can read in English at that, I'm not all that enamoured with the idea of propping up the bar with the likes of Mujeres, Hombres y Viceversa contestants or Gandía Shore cast members, which seems to be all there is to find at most of the spots we used to frequent. I'm not being snobby – much – but I do enjoy a night out surrounded by people like me who are also looking to have fun, and are not spray-tanned, buffed, pumped up, squeezed into tiny dresses that barely cover buttcheeks (the girls) and skintight tees with more chest on show than I would even do on the beach (the boys) and are there for one reason only – to be seen. It seems like Big Nights Out are just not 'In' any more. And although I do miss the shaking of bootay, a lot has to be said for gossiping over pre-dinner drinks, lazing over late suppers and enjoying a long cool tipple of choice in a nice bar afterwards, and yet more still for actually being out and about on a Saturday and/or Sunday morning. Just the other weekend, a few girlfriends and I wrapped up in leather skinny jeans, warm boots and big cosy jackets and beanies and headed down to the Rastro in the Mestalla football ground car park. The fleamarket was packed, the sun was shining, the wind was absolutely freezing and we had a blast haggling for huge pieces of furniture we had no

But back to my case in point. February rocks, but is also a huge mess in the way of fitting everything in. Less days is cool from a work perspective, but when it becomes apparent just how many people decided to be born this month too, and not leave the whole 28 days to me (we're working on a Birthday Month here, people!), including about five of my closest friends, it makes one want to pull one's hair out. I not only have to share the limelight, but I have to sing more “Happy Birthdays” in one month than I will do for the rest of the year. I also have to pull together more than five different show-stopping, birthday-worthy outfits and find the time to buy as many presents, and I am one of those people who likes to put a lot of thought, time and effort into gifting, which just isn't possible. Plus, do you know what is on offer at this time of year? Everything is emblazoned with love hearts, decorated with teddy bears or smudged with faux-lipstick kisses. Because, as if there wasn't enough going on, it's also Valentine's Day half way through the month! Say what?! Obviously with all my hundreds of admirers I’m going to be pushed to find date nights for all of them, especially with all the shopping and drinking and eating and (attempted) dancing I’ll be doing. Maybe we could push it back to March? I'm sure no one would mind if it was after Fallas, what difference will a few days make, I say!

VALENCIA NIGHTLIFE HELLO CLUBBERS!! Yes, it’s me, John Tracey and I’m back for another pubbers/clubbers guide of Valencia. In this month’s edition we are going to be taking a little look at the Blasco Ibáñez area, but first I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and hopefully a healthy and a ‘prospers 1 two’:) Now then, with all that said and done, let’s get back to business. First on the agenda is something I like to call ‘Wild Wednesday’. For those of you who didn’t know, Wednesday night in Valencia is Erasmus night! What makes this different to other student nights around the world I hear you cry? Well, for me the best thing about Erasmus night is the fact that you have hundreds of people from all over the globe that have all chosen Valencia to study in for various different reasons. For many of them it is the first time away from home, and the main objective for 99% of them is to get completely and utterly funked up, and to finish waking up to a random person you’ve never met before from hopefully an exotic foreign country (and no, Scotland doesn’t count as an exotic country). The first port of call has to be Caribbeans in C/ Bélgica, 5 (Tel: 608 664 713). It’s opposite the Mestalla fútbol stadium and this is a little underground bar, and when (i say underground bar, i don’t mean drum & bass or garage, i mean literally you have to walk down some steps to get into it:) The music on Wednesdays or any other nights is very commercial, but also with a few ‘big’ hits from countries like Finland, Estonia, and let’s not forget about Iceland, all known for their world-renowned musical lyrics...NOT!!! Hahaha! But it is quite funny to see clubbers all bouncing around and throwing each other up in the air to songs even the Eurovision would be ashamed to play:) After Caribbeans you could go to numerous bars in the area, but I have found that the busiest and most consistent are Negritos and Café Tucan (C/ Poly y Peyrolón, 40, Tel: 654 338 542). Both are on C/ Polo y Peyrolón and a practically opposite each other. The only real difference between them (and for me a real game changer) is that Negritos serves their copas in plastic cups and Café Tucan serves theirs the

24/7 VALENCIA correct way, in proper glass ones. I don't know what it is, but I simply can’t fully enjoy drinking a nice Jim Beam and coke, or gin & tonic out of the same sort of cups we had at my nephew’s eighth birthday party, call me pijo (posh) or what you will…it just doesn't taste the same!! Also, Café Tucan has a better space to dance in my opinion and cheaper drinks, too. Whilst in any one of these three bars, don’t forget to ask the bar staff for some free tickets to the nightclubs afterwards. Normally after you buy a drink, if you ask they will give you a ticket to either Murrayclub 33rpm (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) or Rumbo 144 (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 144). They are opposite each other. If they have run out they will point you in the direction of one of the PRs from the club who is normally drinking for free in the corner of the bar, or if not, they will be ready for you when you leave… One thing, though, be careful that you don’t dawdle on the walk there. It should only take you about 10 minutes, but the free passes are a little bit like Cinderella at the ball but, instead of turning into a pumpkin at midnight, they turn into disappointing discounts at 04.00h. So I would even suggest to leave the pubs about 03.00h, as there is normally a big Q the closer you get to cut off time. Ok, so the big question is which one do you choose? Murrayclub or Rumbo 144? Answer? Well, it’s simple...BOTH:) Get to Murray’s around 03.00h to use your free pass, grab yourself a beer and then go to door and get a cuño (stamp) which is normally free but sometimes they might charge you one or two euros. After that, stroll over the road to Rumbo and do exactly the same before the free passes are worthless.... SIMPLES:) Personally, I like Murrayclub between 03:00 – 04.00h for its rock selection and cheese, then Rumbo between 05.00 – 07.00h, where they have the best hip-hop in town on Wednesdays with the one and only DJ Cosy O from the UK. He has been on the scene for long time in Valencia and constantly keeps those flavours fresh and up to date, keep up the good work:) You might have noticed that there was a

gap in between 04.30 – 05.00h, I like to call that pizza pay time:) Next to Murrayclub there is a pizza place that has being going for years, I think it’s 2.50€ and you get a kickass slice of pizza, mmm, just what you need about that time, trust me:) Also there is a place called Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) which is right next to Murray’s. This is also a very cool club but most of all it has a pair of balls due to the fact that, along with a few other clubs like La3, the Carmen Club and the new nightclub called Play, it hasn’t conformed with playing all the same commercial music as many of the clubs. It focuses more on electro downstairs and indie pop upstairs, nice mix if you ask me. Obviously, all the places which I’ve been talking about, are good to go Thursday, Friday and Saturdays as well, just with a few variations of bars and clubs like El Tornillo (C/ Campoamor, 42), an indie pop-electronica bar, and Ben’s Inn (Plaza Honduras, 12) with hip-hop and house, good atmosphere and great people. If you get the chance, ask to speak to Ben. He is a top fella and I’m sure he will sort you out with passes or discounts to all the big clubs at the weekends:) Just a stone’s throw from Blasco Ibáñez, two other decent clubs in the Plaza Cedro area are Wah Wah (C/ Campoamor, 52) and Matisse (C/ Campoamor, 60). Both are similar to each other but very different to the rest in the neighbourhood. They normally have live music bands between 22.00h and 24.00h, then Spanish music and good tunes from back in the days of the Beatles and the Stones on the dancefloor. With an international staff, Café Infinito (C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 35) is a great pre-clubbing place to start the night as well as par of the area’s ‘Ruta de la Tapa del Cedro’ every Wednesday! Anyway, that is the end of our rollercoaster ride around Blasco Ibáñez and the surrounding areas. Hope you give it a wild ride some time, as I’m sure you won’t be disappointed:) Remember stay loose, stay moist but most of all stay safe Valencia:) this is J.T @ 24/7 Valencia :) Photo Mateo Sanchis © 24/ 7 Valencia 2013
