Rice to the Occasion Whether it’s your birthday, your saint’s day, some friends are visiting, it’s Fallas, you’ve come into a bit of money, or it’s just a weekend family lunch, at the heart of any celebration in Valencia is the regional dish. Paella: Rabbit, chicken, rice and vegetables, fried and boiled together in a flat pan. Paella is not just food. It’s a byword for a get-together, a bit of a party, and it’s the only thing that gets Valencians more excited than setting fire to things and the prospect of making loud bangs with a bit of gunpowder. Just like barbecues in the UK, there’s something of the outback campfire spirit of cooking paella that inspires the male of the species to take charge of proceedings. In many cases, after not lifting a finger in the kitchen all week, it’s the Valencian man who will proudly present the dish to the family on a Sunday, especially if it’s cooked outside. In the case of paella, this has its roots in history, as, in fact, it was men who invented Valencia’s pride and joy in the first place.

Early 19th century Valencia must have been a sad and joyless place. Paella had not yet been invented and the Valencian regional dish was a soggy, tasteless thing called arroz caldoso made in a large, bucket-shaped metal saucepan. At the home of paella, the Hoya de Buñol region of Valencia, most people made their living from agriculture. The plantations were often a good distance from the villages, so the workers would spend two or three days away from home camping out in the fields. For ease of carriage, they took large flat frying pans or paellas with them to cook their sausages in, instead of the more typical deep saucepans. Like their presentday descendants, on Sundays and holidays the men ‘helped out’ with the cooking (and, just like their present-day descendants, they probably made a complete mess of the kitchen and didn’t even think of doing the washing up). Thinking they knew what’s best, they tried to make arroz caldoso in the same flat pans that they used in the fields, which created a whole new, drier rice dish. Paella was born, named after the farm workers’ frying pan, a choir of angels sang and Valencia became known from then on as ‘Levante Feliz’ or Happy Levante.

Along with Tortilla de patata (served at all Spanish royal events), paella is the Spanish dish par excellence. Just like if you go to England you’ve just got to try the traditional Chicken Tikka Masala, any visit to Spain will usually include paella. Although it’s cooked and eaten all over the country, Valencians will warn you off eating it anywhere else but in Valencia. It may be the right colour and the right shape and even have all the right ingredients (although, of course, it usually doesn’t) but according to Valencians, it ain’t paella, mate. Just as you don’t see many Italians in Pizza Hut, you wouldn’t see many Valencians eating paella in, say, Burgos (and don’t get them started on what they serve up in Covent Garden) unless, of course, they’ve just gone there in order to loudly draw attention to the fact that it’s so much better in Valencia. It’s all in the water, you see. Valencians have been known to transport gallons of water from Valencia to other provinces when planning to prepare a paella outside of the region because the rice just doesn’t come out quite the same cooked with water from anywhere else. Paella

Arroz al horno

study made by a scientist at the Universitat Politécnica de Valencia has found scientific evidence to support this: “As in many chemical reactions, the concentration of diatomic metals has a determinate effect. Calcium and magnesium, for example, in particular, are fundamental for a good paella. Valencian water, which is high in calcium and magnesium, is clearly far superior to the soft water from other parts of Spain for the preparation of paella”. Yeah, whatever. Some Valencians take it to even further extremes, claiming that the only good water for paella comes from a well-known fountain in Buñol (La Fuente de la Alegría), which every day around lunchtime attracts large queues of people both from the general public and restaurants all over the Region, filling tanks of water in the hope of making the perfect paella. So, that’s the water sorted but if you want to be the next ‘Paellero Mayor del Reino’, like the present incumbent señor Vidal from Restaurante Levante in Benisanó (where the king of Spain goes for his paella), there are other rules you should follow. According to Mr. Vidal, the pan or paella should be a minimum of 30 centimetres in diameter and between 7 and 12 centimetres deep. Originally the meat was wild

mountain rabbit but such was the appetite for paella in late 19th century Valencia that wild rabbits became extinct in a matter of a few years so they were replaced with farm-produced rabbit and chicken. The rice should be rounded (code 46 in the official Spanish Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food register) and, of course, grown in Valencia (preferably from the Tío Batista rice fields near El Palmar). It should be cooked over dry pinewood from the forest of El Garbí. The finished paella should be left to stand for ten minutes and covered with newspaper (you should use either Las Provincias or Levante, any Madrid-published newspapers might have a catastrophic effect on the overall taste of the dish). Paella should always be eaten at midday and never at night (unless, of course, it’s Fallas and cooked in the middle of the street specially blocked off to traffic since the beginning of March). Once you’ve got past all the foibles and pernickety do’s and don’ts of how to cook the dish, the best thing about paella is the complete lack of any airs and graces whatsoever when you go to eat it. Even in some of the most expensive restaurants (and a bit of rice and chicken can get ridiculously pricey), don’t expect candlelight, a quiet, out-of-the-way table and soothing background music. Think

paper tablecloths and a huge noisy school dinner hall. Going for a paella is not a formal occasion. There, perhaps, is where the attraction lies. Besuited businessmen will loosen their ties. Paella is often a shortsand-T-shirt kind of meal. There’s probably going to be a few jars of beer involved, there’s going to be kids running round, you’re all maybe going to be eating off the same dish and it’s going to be noisy, very noisy. The classic background to paella is the cacophonous din of fork chiming against plate and the tremendous levels of noise that a Valencia Sunday lunch conversation can create. Over a paella, it sometimes seems that is not what you say, it’s how loud you say it. Every one, of course, will have a comment to make on whether the texture of the rice or whatever was as good as the last time or that time in April six years ago... Valencians are blessed with a particularly advanced ‘paella memory’, the ability to remember the exact taste and texture of every paella they have ever eaten. But, of course, that’s not what it’s really about. It is a Valencia identity thing but it’s also about letting your hair down, relaxing with family and friends and, most important of all, sharing a meal and having a bit of fun. VALENCIA MUSIC

CAROLINA OTERO & THE SOMEONE ELSES lyrics and a dramatic chord change. 10. Benidorm A pop song sung as a duet with Mr Pèrfumme which, as said before, speaks about a love that died. And, no, it doesn’t speak about Imserso or getting drunk on the beach.

CAROLINA OTERO & THE SOMEONE ELSES Tell us about the background and influences of Carolina Otero & the Someone Elses. With four different members of the band, all with different tastes and not all the same age, our musical spectrum is really rather immense. Where we all meet is rock in its broadest sense. Some of the bands we all like include the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Lhasa de Sela, the Beach Boys, Sonic Youth, Beck, PJ Harvey, Dave Grohl and Rush. How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work as musicians? It is not that difficult to play acoustic gigs, particularly during the pre-lunchtime hora de vermut. Our record label, Malatesta Records, often organises these type of gigs with other local bands called ‘Circuit Vermut’. Electric gigs can be harder to find and, although we can and do adapt well to an acoustic setting, a full-on electric format is where we really feel at home. Tell us about the original artwork of your new album Benidorm (Malatesta Records, 2013). The artwork from the record is designed with old photos of Carolina’s parents. We chose these black and white photos so as not to give too much away to the listener. It is a very different concept to the first record cover (Give Me Your Shoes, Antártida Records, México, 2011). The cover photo of Carolina’s mother reflects the melancholy nature of the title track “Benidorm”. Could you take us through each track on

Benidorm? We are Porcelain This is a pop song about the dangers of desire. According to Guattari, the human being is a “wishing machine”. It is sung as a duet with John Martínez (Megaphone ou la Mort). Song to Myself A rock track whose lyrics (inspired by a famous poem by Walt Whitman) celebrate the self. On the Fire Another song about desire, but less poppy and more rocky than the first tune. Your Brain is Backwards Another pop song about someone’s weird mind, this is really a tune about us all. You Don’t Speak My Language A song that speaks about the difficulties of human communication. Two of the lines say: “You’re just like an ancient scripture/ But I’m not the Rosetta Stone,” a complaint about someone not being able to express himself without using weird metaphors. On the Floor A blues tune played raw on an out-of-tune ukulele. This song deals with being drunk on Jägermeister. Composed on the floor quite literally! 7. Ewan McGregor A tune with quite explicit lyrics. One of the most uplifting ones from the record, it speaks about a “chat” on a table with Ewan McGregor. Sr. Correcto (Megaphone ou la Mort) guests on this song. 8. Apples and Arrows A pop rock tune that re-creates the myth of the warrior Atalanta. 9. Dead There is a connection between “Dead” and “Benidorm” since this song speaks about a love that’s over. In relation to the other songs, “Dead” is really different, melancholic. The chorus is very important for the song, not just a chorus to remember, but with quite dramatic

11. El Húesped This song was composed from a poem by Luci Romero which is included in her book, “El Diluvio”. It has a Spanish ‘fronterizo’ air. 12. Mai A very naked song (guitars, vocals, and keyboard by Quique Ruiz) sung as a duet with Micalet Landete (Senior i el Cor Brutal), another love song. 13. Celebración A melodic pop song composed from one of Carolina’s poems included in her book, “Anunciado en Televisión”. It includes lines sung by some of our friends from other bands in Valencia, Isabel Castro (Emma Get Wild), John Martínez (Megaphone ou la Mort), Gilberto Aubán, Manolo Tarancón and Soledad Vélez. Any gigs coming up in the Valencia Region in the coming months? Our label is in the process of organizing a short tour (Madrid, Barcelona and other cities). Since we released our record last March here in Valencia, for the moment, there are no more electric gigs in town. However, we will be part of the Circuit Vermut on May 11 in Canguro Verde (Ruzafa) and that will be a semi-electric concert. We will also play in June (on the Día de la Música) with other local bands. Please check our sites for updates and to hear the music. Clochinas Valencianas

Sunday 12th 18.30: Acoustic concert by Dixie Jumble with Marian Zorio and Raúl Rabadán. Voluntary contribution.

By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Get ready! The season of the clochina, the Valencian mussel, otherwise known to his friends as Mytilus Galloprovincialis, traditionally starts in the third week of May and lasts until the end of August. However, with high spring temperatures, like many of you, he is making an early appearance on the Malvarrosa and this year the season officially opened on 1st May. Catch him quick as, according to a scientific and unbiased report undertaken by Valencia University, Mytilus reigned supreme in 32 tastings, beating both his gallego and tarraconense (Tarragona) rivals in aroma, taste and juiciness! Rich in vitamins, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and low in calories, it’s your perfect bikini mission meal...

Thursday 23rd

no disputing that the best way to eat them is the simplest, so this month there are no complications. Having selected your tightly closed mussels, all you have to do is to add a dash of olive oil and perhaps a squeeze of lemon and steam them just to the point that all the shells have opened. Alternatively, gently fry an onion and a small amount of garlic in a large pan, add the mussels, a cup of wine, turn up the heat and place a lid over the top for a couple of minutes, again until the mussels have opened. Then add some chopped flat-leaf parsley or, if you like Asian flavours, coriander or kaffir lime leaves are also delicious. What is really important is not to overcook the clochinas and not to mask their own flavour.

Clótxines Valereta, a family business run by Laura at the bottom of Avenida dels Tarongers close to the beach, is a great place to buy them but you can also find them in any of the main Valencia markets. They should cost around about 5,50€ a kilo. Produced in Valencia since the beginning of the 19th century, the Valencian clochina is smaller than its Mollusca cousins; darker on the outside and whiter on the inside, and with a more intense taste. Although people are sometimes scared of seafood, the good thing about cooking mussels is you know how fresh they are, because if they aren’t moving, they ‘ain’t going in the pan’, so carefully pick through your mussels discarding any that don’t shut their lids tightly as if to say, “Not today, gracias!” Then, with a small sharp knife, pull away the unwanted beard, plus any barnacles. The mussels will survive longer the less they are disturbed so it is important to prepare them just before cooking.

When you come to eat the clochinas, discard any that haven’t opened, pour a nice class of chilled white wine and breathe in the aromas of the sea.

Now with all those subtle flavours in the clochinas themselves, there is

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LA MORA TABERNA ESPAÑOLA There are a few things that tell you a restaurant is good. Two of them are as follows: D and I got a little lost finding the restaurant and we asked a passer-by where the street was. He had no idea, but when we told him the name of the restaurant, he had no problem guiding us to it. As it turned out, we were very close and immediately recognised La Mora, having often remarked that we would like to eat there when passing in the car. The second pointer to a restaurant’s quality and reputation is how busy it is on a Tuesday night. Packed with an obviously local crowd. It says it all. La Mora is a very attractive restaurant with a superb, partly-covered terrace in the heart of Valencia, just a five-minute walk from Plaza de España. It is very conveniently open all day from 12.00h midday to 01.00, so you can just pop in for a drink or a snack when you feel like it – so often you need just this type of place and everywhere decent is closed! La Mora was, as mentioned, packed and one got the feeling this was pretty normal. For a busy restaurant, one could not fault the service or the standard of the food. The dining area spreads itself across two rooms on the corner of this street, it is all white and black and the end wall is glass with the wine cellar behind. We had no chance to chat with the owner or the staff as it was so busy, but you just know that this would make a great local eatery, as all the staff were so friendly and attentive. The next table to ours was a noisy and boisterous birthday group and behind us was a more sedate group of four friends. The atmosphere was buzzing and fun. I’d like to tell you that there was music in the background, I am sure there was, but the chatter was so loud all evening we didn’t

notice. We did notice, however, that the large terrace was also pretty bustling. Bet ween our charming and ver y knowledgeable waiter and ourselves we came up with the following combination for our dinner. First was Lacón con aceite de oliva y humus, tasty slices of the ham we are more used to in northern climes, drizzled with olive oil and served with a portion of hummus and super crispy breads (6.40€). Next we had Cristal frío de redondo de ternera cocido en finas hierbas, bañado con salsa de mayonesa, atún, alcaparras y pimientos asados en Almíbar (7.90€). These ‘cristales’ are a speciality of the house, a great combination of a light and extremely crispy baguette (they crack like glass) with delicious toppings. We chose the finely sliced roast beef, delicious and flavourful, with a fantastic dressing of mayo, tuna, capers and syruproasted peppers. The Ensalada La Mora (9.30€) of espinaca, lacón, piñones, virutas de queso parmesano y vinagreta de mostaza was delivered to the table at the same time as the cristal, a nice fresh salad with a base of young raw spinach, more of that delicious ham, shavings of parmesan, pine nuts and a vinaigrette dressing with mustard. Finally came a little plate of Tempura de Langostinos, lightly tempura-ed, skewered large prawns served with a soya dip (6.90€). For our main course our waiter recommended we share a fabulous Argentinean entrecot steak, perfectly griddled with a nicely spiced chimichurri and a goat’s cheese sauce accompanied by fine, crisp-like potatoes. This Entrecot Argentino con salsa chimichurri y salsa al Cabrales was an excellent value at 16.50€.

obviously lovingly homemade, they were Tarta de Queso con salsa de arándanos (Blueberry cheesecake), Tiramisú con mascarpone italiano (the classic Italian pudding) and Tarta de chocolate con dulce de leche (a chocolate cake with caramelised sweetened milk) La Mora has an extensive wine selection, you can see the cellar through that glass wall. We had PC Pago de los Capellanes 2011, a very fruity Ribero del Duero and perfect with our selection of food. All the wines were very reasonably priced from around 14€ and up, though there was a special offer on another Ribero for only 11€ so check with your waiter. As you can tell, we loved La Mora, the food and service are great and the prices are very reasonable. We would have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending it. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

POLITICALLY INCORRECT For most habitual readers of this monthly column, you will be relieved to know that this will probably be, if not the last, then the penultimate contribution from myself after many years of sharing my thoughts about Valencia Club de Fútbol. The singular reason being that today’s VCF has been taken over by politicians and as such is destined to fail. Veiled conspiracies have contrived to see the downfall of Manuel Llorente, the man behind the success of the team under Cúper and Benítez, the same man who fought against the suicidal economic policy of Soler and the same man brought back to rescue Valencia when it was on the verge of going under. Llorente steadied the ship and began to reduce the club’s crippling deficit and just as it seemed that things were beginning to settle down, in stepped the politicians to get their slice of power.

At this moment in time, the club is being carved up into little parcels distributed amongst this group of people and no one knows where it will end. The manager Ernesto Valverde has publicly said that he will talk about a new contract when he knows who is in charge of the club, the problem being that nobody knows who that person is. The latest incumbent lasted 13 days whilst the next one, reputed to be a well-known businessman, will have to wait until the next shareholders’ meeting. Other directors have to wait and see if they can assume power within the club if it does not affect their political and legal responsibilities!! Football-wise, the team seems to have reflected the tumultuous state of the club with good results followed by disastrous defeats, the story of the season if truth be told. The Chés went away to Atlético Madrid and came away with a point, which was little to show for their domination of the first half. An early goal from Jonas was cancelled out by a strike from Falcao a minute later but VCF were incapable of

finishing off the tie and the spoils were shared. One week later the blanc i negres quite literally robbed three points from Valladolid. In all honesty, they should have sealed the match after 60 minutes but were incapable of making their superiority count. They went into the lead thanks to an own goal from Valladolid but a missed penalty from Soldado meant that the pucelanos still believed they had a chance to get something from the game, which they did. At 1-1 in the 93rd minute, a throw-in was awarded to Valladolid. Unfortunately for them, the Valencia centre-back Rami took the throw-in, gave it to his teammate who crossed for Jonas to score a completely illegal winner. To say the visitors were miffed is a bit of an understatement. The next match was even crazier. Valverde’s team travelled away to Espanyol, looking for a win that would keep them in touch at the top of the table. The home team held a half-time lead that was pegged back by Sergio Canales, still finding his feet after a lengthy injury,

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

and the periquitos scored what looked to be the winner in the 82nd minute. Amazingly Jonas and Soldado scored in the dying moments to seemingly claim an impossible win but with the last kick of the game, ex-Levante striker Sergio García struck to equalise and the spoils were shared. VCF’s next challenge was against fellow Champions League aspirants, Málaga. What looked to be a difficult tie was all but over after half an hour after goals from Parejo, Canales and a brace from Soldado meant that the Chés could take their foot off the pedal and coast to an astounding 5-1 victory. Things were looking up as the team faced another direct opponent for the fourth place spot, Real Sociedad. Unfortunately Valencia’s luck ran out and after taking an early lead from Soldado, things began to go badly wrong. The referee failed to spot a blatant handball outside the area from the Real keeper, Bravo, a straight red that would have seen Real down to 10 men and losing 0-1. They

rode their luck and fought back to achieve a 4-2 win over Valencia and cemented themselves in the cherished Champions League spot. All Valencia can do now is win and hope that Real Sociedad stumble. Their next match was against Osasuna, who put up little resistance and left Mestalla after a 4-0 drubbing. VCF were unstoppable thanks to stellar displays from Soldado, Jonas and Banega. If their performances throughout the season had been more consistent, it is difficult to imagine that Valencia would be so low in the table and struggling to attain fourth place in the league. Their last four games against Rayo, Getafe, Granada and Sevilla must be victories if they are to achieve their goal whilst Real Sociedad still have to take on Real Madrid.

If we take into account that teammates are accusing each other of taking bribes to throw matches, then the explanation of the team’s poor form becomes explicable. The 4-0 home defeat to Deportivo is under investigation by the Spanish FA amid rumours of briefcases filled with money in exchange for below-par performances. The truth will out. So both teams in the capital are having a rough time of it, one being accused of corruption and the other facing a takeover from politicians. It’s a good job that I still have my beloved Wigan Athletic, an FA Cup final, Europa League football guaranteed and next season in the Championship, el fútbol es así!! Mark Hulton See listings page 31 for football calendar

Over at Orriols it is all going off. Since assuring La Liga status in December, the granotas have really taken their foot off the pedal and lately cannot win a game.

TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH

What a beautiful way to spend an evening in the spring in Valencia. ENBOU Lounge Drink + Tapas is set in the heart of the centro histórico so the setting is just right for a meal on their atmospheric terrazza. We went on a balmy Friday night and it was a really cosmopolitan crowd that were wining and dining to their hearts’ content along with us. To our right was a table of 20 friendly Norwegians in their 20s, to our left a large table of decent Brits enjoying postdinner gin & tonics! Both groups were unobtrusive and the mellow setting makes for a relaxed atmosphere. There was also a good smattering of attractive Spanish and Italian bon vivants sipping wine and enjoying sharing tapas under the Valencian moonlight… ENBOU has only been in existence for about four months but it is already very much part of the Valencia tapas and dining scene. We asked Javi, the informed host and owner, to choose for us a representative dinner for two and we were not disappointed. We started with Ensalada de espinacas, rulo de cabra, nueces y pasas, which “was really good” according to Bella… and she really knows her salads. It was a tasty combination of spinach salad, goat’s cheese, nuts and dried raisins. The portion was generous, too. To accompany our meal, we went for Alidis (Crianza 2009), a Ribera del Duero. It was a superb red wine, crisp and smooth, balanced and with body. As we sipped our red wine, we savoured a mixed tabla of ham & cheese that was attractively presented with olives. Continuing with the stylish presentation, we were next served Champiñon a la plancha con salsa verde, which were top-quality grilled mushrooms in a special green ‘mery’ Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia / Photos © Vicente

sauce. Amongst their seven tapas to share, you will also find Spicy sausages in cider as well as Crunchy chicken skewers with corn and BBQ sauce. Our hosts recommended that we really should try one of their ‘Hamburguesas Gourmet’ so we decided to go for the EnBou, which was 200 grams of beef, grilled goat’s cheese, caramelised onion with a balsamic vinegar of Modena. It was big! Suffice to say, it was wonderful, too. The combined textures of the ingredients, the quality of the meat and the presentation was rather impressive. Bella says she wants to go back to ENBOU with friends and family specifically for the Gourmet Hamburgers! For dessert we were presented with a Brownie de chocolate con pistachio y bombón helado. We don’t recall a brownie being presented with such care, artistry and variety in a long time. It was delicious! It was a real treat in every sense with the pistachio giving the dessert a distinctive tang. Again, a very generous portion. Overall, we found ENBOU to be really good value given the quality of the ingredients and presentation of the salads, tapas, gourmet burgers and desserts. Expect to pay between 15 – 22€ per person for a good night out here. This was a memorable evening for dining out and the service was caring from all of the staff that we met. The carta is in both Spanish and English, which makes choosing your meal very easy. Regarding the interior, the lounge / restaurant of ENBOU is set on two floors with tables for couples and group reservations for those who prefer to dine inside. Javi tells us that you should now find paella available at ENBOU at weekends. We’re going back this month! Owl and Bella

VALENCIA WORLD La Bodegueta

Isabel by Manuel Más

Isabel Tomás García Tell us about your background. I was born and brought up in Aldaia, a town on the outskirts of Valencia. The ‘Bar Sol’ was run by my father, ‘Tío Kiko’, and I remember him as a singer who sang the flamenco of the time (Farina, Manolo Caracol and all those singers from the ‘40s and ’50s). I also remember that he would also tell chistes (jokes) and it was this, along with his singing, that my mother says charmed her and got them together! Frequent musical visitors to the bar were the local gitana (gypsy) family ‘Los Cariños’, and Tomás de los Cariños now lives and plays flamenco in Valencia. Everyday, to get ‘home’, I had to enter the establishment, go past the bar, go through the kitchen to get upstairs and I was brought up like this until I was 15 years old. My father was Valenciano and my mother Castilian and I was brought up with their values and those of our local pueblo. It was in the ‘60s that my dad installed the first jukebox in town in the bar and you inserted a coin to play a song. I remember the hits from those times in the ‘60s and ’70s like Nino Bravo, the Beatles and flamenco…they’re really great memories. In the ‘80s, I came to the city of Valencia and had two children, Manuel and Sara. Manuel is a professional singer and music teacher who has sung opera all over Spain, including in Valencia and Barcelona. He was invited to sing in Mallorca for the 150th anniversary of Puccini’s death. He speaks many Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

languages including German and Italian. Having been brought up with flamenco and pop / rock, it’s curious that he should like opera so much. He said he wanted to be an opera singer from such a young age, but I do remember an uncle who loved opera and sang in the church choir, so that’s probably where it came from. He’s also a great cartoonist! You can find my son singing on YouTube as Manuel Más (baritone). We’re a musical family. My daughter Sara lives and works in Mallorca and loves living amongst nature and by the beach and is a complete artist! (Laughs).

courteous and a great conversationalist. I’ve got two guitars signed by him. La Bodegueta was just 24 meters squared and I would need to virtually write a book to include all the memories I have of the place, memories which can’t be bought. It was here I would also serve my tapas, the famous tortilla and patatas of Isa as well as sausages and more. It still saddens me to think that La Bodegueta had to close in 2012 when the licensing rules of the local council regarding having a bar in the Barrio del Carmen changed in recent years. It’s now a T-shirt shop. The growing crisis and fines by the local council ruined us and it finished off a lot of bars in the barrio. I closed La Bodegueta both very angry and sad that La Bodegueta ended, it left a lot of people orphaned and without their second home from home. That said, no one can take away our spirit, the music, the dance and the song. Olé!

Tell us about your legendary bar ‘La Bodegueta’.

Tell us about your new place, La Creïlla.

I started the bar in 1996 on C/ Caballeros, 10, and flamenco was dead in Valencia at the time. In 2000, a friend gave me a guitar, which I put up by the bar and flamenco musicians would stop by after performing in the nearby Teatro Talia that had an annual flamenco festival. Then local musicians and flamencos like Juanki, Marcos Requena, Amaro, Javi, El Chino, Santi, Estela, Israel, Blanco and many more would come by and La Bodegueta became a place where people could express themselves musically. It was a sentimiento, a meeting point for musicians and for people from around the world who connected just with a look. People passing by would hear the guitars and singing from outside and would come in and flamenco was the ruler of the night.

I can’t keep still and about a year ago I was offered a place less than 100 metres from La Bodegueta. I’ve always enjoyed cooking so the chance to run a take-away with homemade, authentic Spanish tapas was an opportunity I wasn’t going to miss. I also cook paella, arroz al horno, as well as my famous tortilla patatas and habas (broad beans) with ham. There’s more on offer including my old family recipe of caracoles (snails), cheeses, hams, and pisto valenciano, too. You’ll find La Creïlla on C/ Calatrava, 23 in the Barrio del Carmen.

The wall was cluttered with photos of music legends who had stopped by at La Bodegueta including Duquende, Niño Josele, Diego El Cigala, Agujetas, Rafael de Utera, Pitingo, Miguel Poveda, and many cinema and theatre actors who would stop by. La Mari of Chambao came by and sung some beautiful bulerías accompanied by the piano. The world’s most famous guitarist, Paco de Lucia, hung out and I found him humble, amiable,

Tell us about your famous pet dog of the barrio. Trasto is my ever-faithful companion. He is 10 years old, has loads of personality and is very independent and very bright, too. I live above La Creïlla in the centro histórico and friends have told me that they have spotted Trasto as far away as Ruzafa on one of his strolls. He knows how to stop at traffic lights on his own and how to pose for tourists taking photographs of him outside Mercado Central! Interview by Owl

YOGA IN THE VALENCIA COMMUNITY These are just a few of the main subjects that are covered during the residential courses that they run. Other aspects of the course deal with mindfulness and working with pain through yoga.

Yoga is a phenomenon that has attracted millions since the ‘60s, swelling yoga centres and producing employment for many good yoga teachers. Yoga growth in America has turned the industry into a multi-million dollar venture. In Europe yoga has been steadily growing, and continues to make regular appearances in media publications. In Spain, it is no longer uncommon to find a yoga centre or class offered in every barrio. Bodhiyoga.es is a yoga teacher-training program offering retreats in Spain and has been established by two expat long-term yoga teachers now living in Valencia. The founders of the course, Sadhita and Sudaka, have lived in Spain for about eight years. The two are friends and have known each other, from the UK, since the mid-‘90s. As their names might suggest, they are in fact Buddhists and are both involved in a range of teaching activities to do with meditation, yoga and Buddhism both in Valencia and Scotland. The Bodhiyoga teacher-training programme runs at two levels: 200 hours and 500 hours, which are the recognised international hours for yoga teacher training. The course is unique, offering comprehensive pre-course and post-course backup and support for yoga teachers, helping them to get their teaching practices underway. The school, although based in Spain, has an international student base. Some of their courses run in Scotland, but the majority are run in their two venues not far from Valencia, both strategically chosen for their natural beauty and inspirational qualities. Their teachertraining program is a complete working out of Hatha yoga, meditation and teaching and teaching methodology. Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

When someone decides that they want to become a teacher, it is usually quite a big deal for the person. They have reached a point in their practice whereby they feel the urge or impetus to share the skills and insights that they have learned. Choosing a yoga teaching school can be daunting, as there are now so many schools to choose from. Bodhiyoga make the application process straightforward. Once you are accepted onto the course, you are set on your way with the pre-course study material. From that moment on you are a student and offered full backup during the period of studies. Both Sudaka and Sadhita teach independently as well as together. Sudaka teaches general yoga classes and workshops based upon the philosophy and principles of mindfulness from the Buddhist tradition and Sadhita works with students one to one for people who have structural problems and pain. They also run yoga and meditation retreats open to all. They are both highly qualified and registered as 'Yoga Elders' (more than 5,000 hours teaching) with the IYN (Independent Yoga Network), an international yoga organisation that works to maintain the integrity of independent yoga teaching. Sadhita was formerly a physical therapist and Sudaka is a shiatsu practitioner and was once trained as an engineer. Both of the founders are also practicing Buddhists, with many years of meditation training and retreats between them. To epitomise the approach of the Bodhiyoga School, one could say that it is a contemplative yoga, a thinking person’s yoga. The values and practices they teach are based in the Buddhist tradition. The way that the course is taught brings forward a very clear approach to practicing yoga and gives yoga a depth that it sometimes lacks nowadays. Bodhiyoga is not so much a style as an approach and therefore teachers or practitioners of any school of yoga

can benefit from this way of practicing. Mindfulness and awareness are useful for everyone, all of the time! To get more information about the course see the website: www.bodhiyoga.es This year’s yoga teacher training will be held near to Olba, an hour or so from Valencia just inside the province of Teruel. There is also a programme of events open to all levels listed on the website for those that would like to take the practice of yoga further and enjoy some time in the beautiful surroundings of the mountains of Spain. June 1 – 8, Sacarest retreat. Title: The Way of Mindfulness through Yoga (for experienced yogis and teachers). Set in Alicante region. July 20 – 27, Sacarest retreat. Title: Mastering the Basics (all levels, general open retreat). Set in Alicante region. September 8 – 29, 200 hours foundation teacher training (by formal application) at La Artiga. The nearest pueblo is Olba in Teruel. VALENCIA NIGHTLIFE WHAT’S UP!!!! I bring good news from the lands of music and kick-ass parties.... VALENCIA IS ON THE UP!!!!! Finally people are starting to realize where the good places are to go out and blanking all of the commercial money-grabbing, fake, wannabe clubs and pubs, and leaving them for the new generation, who still have no idea about music and are just happy to be allowed in the front door, HA!! GET IN;) Even more pubs are having regular live music and the standard is certainly getting better;) Definitely the barrio with the biggest impact in live music at the moment and number one hotspot in Valencia is BENIMACLET. Benimaclet is situated in the northeast part of the city and is one of Valencia’s oldest barrios to date. Founded by two travelling Englishmen (Ben Dover and Seymour Butts) venturing around the world whilst educating the masses in the ways of etiquette and moral values in the 1700s, Benimaclet has been a mecca for bohemian, cosmopolitan budding musicians since the beginning of time. Well, honestly not too sure if that first part was true, but it makes a great start to my story…hahah! A great way to find out what’s going on every week in Benimaclet is to visit a website called http://www. benimacletentra.org/. It publicizes all of the gigs and gives a good detailed review on what kind of music and atmosphere to expect. The top three bars to check out, starting in reverse order, are as follows: 3. Kaf Café (C/ Arquitecto Arnau, 16), is a cool bar for all you who are into the arts with poetry, theatre, comedy, books, bands and board games, it’s got everything. So whether you wanna curl up and order a coffee and read one of their varied selection of abstract books, or order a few copas with a few friends and check out one of the many bands performing, I think you will go home with a smile. If u go 2. Tam Tam (C/ Emilio Baró, 20),

24/7 VALENCIA or better known as the pirate bar, it’s a strange but cool bohemian place with a really funky indoor outdoor terrace (you’ll know what I mean when you go there), friendly staff and ridiculously good mojitos. It’s a must-visit place, especially if you’re a fan of Jack Sparrow and his crew rrrrrrrrrrrr;) My personal favourite by far, due to the fact that it has nearly everything you want when you go to a bar (darts, futbolín, kick-ass interactive Texas hold ’em machine, great rock memorabilia all over the walls, comfy red sofas, good beers, cool as funk staff, nice clean bathrooms, great people, Premier League, La Liga, live bands, independent films, and not to forget EPIC MUSIC!!!!!), HAS TO BE…1. BAR PULSO (C/ Lladró y Malli, 25) with live bands starting early most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. If you’re ever in Benimaclet and can’t decide where to go, PULSO IS A SURE BET;) Other bars in the area are Bar Colonial (C/ Doctor Vicente Zaragozá, 3) and Excalibur (C, Doctor Vicente Zaragozá 5 – 7, right next door). Both have a lively atmosphere with big outdoor terraces and flat screens to watch all the top sporting events. OK, FOR ALL YOU HOUSE HEADS OUT THERE, I HAVE A LITTLE SECRET THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW;) I don’t know about you, but if you are around my age 30 (I know I look 50) and you’re looking for a good house club in Valencia, nowadays I find it quite hard to come by. Either the queue is wrapped around the back of the club till you can’t see it anymore, or once you get in there, you have to fight past groups of 16-yearolds ordering their one drink to last them the night...I know we are supposed to be in a crisis, but really??NO NEEEED!!!;)

to quality funky house drinking a nice cold mojito??? (I know, I love mojitos;) Seriously, if there is, please let me know. If you fancy food while you’re there, they do a great menu for 20€ which includes three courses (including paella) and obviously...you guessed it, a FREE MOJITO!!!! MY HEAVEN;) The top man DOM SCOTT (www.djdomscott.com) is leading the way down there, playing the most up-to-date soulful music around and also banging out a few of his own tip-top tunes which, to tell you the truth, are simply AMAZING!!!! Bottles of Moet are ONLY 55€ and for special prices on any other bottles, or reserving a sofa bed or paella, call me on 647 585 494 and I will sort you out a good deal;) On a personal note, DJ SHAFT (me) will be playing in XL Playground (Gran Vía Germanías, 21) on the 17th of this month and also on the 23rd in Club 47 on (C/ Quart, 47).
So if you fancy a bit of a giggle and a good old-fashioned, let your hair down, don’t give a flying …. about anything dance, COME ON DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, hope this info has been helpful to you in some sort of way. It should have been because they are all top places!! REMEMBER...if you can’t be good... be REALLY REALLY BAD!!;) J.T.L.T.D!!!!© 24/7 Valencia ;) (John Treacy)

ANYWAY, I HAVE THE SOLUTION (well, actually the owners had the solution). LAYDOWN (Puerto Marina Real Juan Carlos I – Local 8) have started funky/ deep house Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 15:30h and 20:30h. I mean really, what better way is there to enjoy your afternoons than to be sitting in the sun, on giant white sofa beds by the beach with your top off, dancing © Cecille 7 Valencia 2013 PhotoPhotos © Víctor Aranda/ /Article: ArticleJohn LolaTreacy García©©24/ 2013 24/7Valencia
