ÚNIC

Únic has arrived in Valencia as an ‘Open Space’ in the barrio del Carmen, with a superb setting, a different kind of character, one that is cosmopolitan and takes us on quite a different journey from the rest… Under the title of “Daily Goodness” we find at ‘Únic’ an interesting fusion of fashion, art & design, music, gastronomy as the pillars of a concept created for a young, urbanite crowd with a shared outlook… Set in the old centre, in a rehabilitated building, it has 2 floors and a beautiful terraza. ‘Únic’ is the ideal place to chill out in the early evening and to enjoy “people watching” in the busy barrio while savouring a coffee or one of their select Gin’n’tonics. As night falls, ‘Únic’ becomes a drinks bar with DJs from Wednesday to Sunday. It’s the official pre-parties headquarters for LA3 nightclub, which is the ‘indietronic’ club par excellence of Valencia with the most daring line-up in terms of international DJs and bands. Many VIPS and resident DJs pop by every weekend to ‘Únic’ for their first drinks of the night.

A tower of song It houses the oldest and largest musical instrument in the Comunidad Valenciana. Juana la Loca, the Borgias and Blasco Ibáñez have climbed its steps. The inventor Juan de la Cierva flew his Autogiro (a sort of prototype helicopter) off its terrace in 1924. Zeppelins flew over it and later bomber aircraft cast their dark shadow over it in the ‘30s and the Great Bordini rode down it on a motorbike in the ‘70s. Forget the Ciudad de las Ciencias, the Torre de Francia, and the Modernist temples of the Estación del Norte and the Central Market. Don’t even think about the Parotet and the Palau de la Música. The Torres de Serranos run it close, but if any one building has become a symbol of Valencia, it’s the Cathedral bell tower known to us all as the Miguelete. It has stood watching over the city for nearly 600 years, its bells ringing out warnings of attacks by pirates, French invasions, and air raids. It has overseen the fall and rise of new republics and civil wars and has taken on a popular identity all of its own, separate from the Cathedral itself. Building started in 1381 and the tower was completed in 1429. It was built in the

style dictated by the Templar Knights, who had a thing for mathematical symmetry. So it is perfectly octagonal in shape and its perimeter is exactly the same as its height from the base to its original terrace (51 metres).Various bits and bobs were added and taken away over the centuries and it now stands at 71 metres to the tip of the cross at the top of the belfry. The Templars also left their mark on other weird and wonderful features of the tower. The prison, in the tower’s second section, is a dark, stone room with five-metre thick walls where those who had entered the cathedral asking for “sanctuary” from the forces of law and order were kept. An unusually designed window, which is not in line with the rest of the tower, only allows sunlight into the room for just two minutes on exactly the morning of 15 August, the Catholic Feast of Assumption to which the Cathedral was originally dedicated. Another strange feature is the Piedra Sillar or foundation stone, which is at the base of the tower in C/ del Miguelete and juts out a little from the others. If you give

it a sharp knock, you can hear the sound perfectly up in the bell room. To this day nobody knows exactly how it works, some sort of cavity must have been incorporated into the building but there is nothing in the original plans. It was used to let the bell ringers know when to start work. There are centuries-old graffiti both in the prison and the bell room, where the people who lived or worked there left their mark. In between the two is the bell ringer’s quarters. The last man to occupy them was one Mariano Folch, who lived there and took charge of the bells for 60 years ‘til he died in 1905. His name is scratched onto the stone walls within which he spent a whole lifetime. It costs 2€ to go up (or 4.50€ if you want to include a tour of the whole cathedral). Once you’ve negotiated the rather tiresome traffic light system which allows for people to come up and down without having to pass on the narrow spiral staircase, there are 207 steps, which are quite steep (some of them about 25 cms high) so it can be heavy going. Just ask Francesc de Paula Llop i Lluch, who at 84 years of age goes up every day to sell postcards and Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

chat with other visitors. He says his secret is to stop at every window for a breather and not to try to do it in any less than five minutes. It’s worth it when you get to the top. Valencia is relatively flat and you can see the whole city. All the way from its western reaches and the surrounding mountains to the sea in the east and the huerta to the north and south, against a usually bright blue sky. Immediately below are the clay tile rooftops and terraces of the chaotic, rambling Barrio del Carmen and the Torres de Quart and Serranos, which give you some idea of the old limits of the ancient city.

bangs, they probably just stood around and applauded. Along with the Miquel there are two smaller bells, which chime the quarters, and thirteen interior bells housed within the tower. Apart from a period between 1960 and 1988 when the bells were temporarily electrified, these bells have been manually played to ring out for masses, matins and vespers and give news of victories, defeats, floods and pirates on the coast for more than 500 years. In the modern noisy city it’s easy to ignore them, but for centuries people timed their days and organised their lives by the sound of the Miguelete’s bells.

If you look up you see the huge Miquel bell, which rings out every hour and gives the tower its name. It is 2.38 metres in diameter and weighs nearly 7,514 kilos. This is the fifth version of the Miquel and has hung there since 1532. Some of the previous bells had been cracked by lightening bolts and in 1519, one of them fell from the tower in a violent storm and smashed to pieces with a thunderous crash down below. It must have caused a bit of a panic but knowing Valencians and their love of loud

The Miguelete tower itself has played an active role in the city’s history. In the 16th century it served as a beacon with a permanent guard watching the coast. Bonfires were lit at the top of the tower to warn of attacks as part of a string of beacons that went all the way up to the Ebro. The same system was used during the war of Succession and the Napoleonic invasion in the 19th century and the tower was hit by a grenade during the Carlist wars in 1868. During the Civil War in the 1930s, it

was used as a watchtower with sirens and loudspeakers to warn of air raids coming over from Mallorca. The Miguelete runs right through the heart of Valencia city life going back over the last six centuries. It appears in classic paintings, propaganda posters, newspaper cartoons, adverts and on tourist T-shirts. Distances from Valencia to other points are all measured from the Miguelete. It is a religious building which has become something more – part of the city and its culture. A point of reference. It is no longer the highest building in the city but if something is tall in Valencia, it’s still said to be “taller than the Miguelete”.

TO KILL A KING

TO KILL A KING five-minute warning. There’s a video for this song online. It’s got a bunch of kids and giant wrestlers. It was made by Jack King. He’s done most of our videos. He’s an old school friend of Ralph’s and a bit of a genius. The meaning behind the video is uncertain. I like to think of the wrestlers representing the troubles that kids have to confront when they’re growing up.

instincts. How even if things have gotten bad there’s something that drives you to carry on. If you like quiet-then-loud songs, then you’ll like this one. We often play this one live and it starts off quiet and then gets really loud. If people haven’t heard it, it shocks them into listening. Choices

We’re a British five-piece indie folk-rock-pop, acoustic and electric music band. We formed about three years ago in London and we’ve released an album and twp EPs. People compare us to bands like the National, Grizzly Bear, Elbow – that sort of thing.

Another single. It’s a joyous song where the guy wants his funeral to be a massive celebration of his life. We filmed a live version of this song with about 50 of our musician friends. They all came along to a pub in London and we had a party and played the song. It was great fun. If you search for “To Kill A King, Funeral Singalong”, you should find it.

This is a song about the start and end of a relationship. There are happy memories of special moments as well as references to the breakdown. It’s a big song for us. We have a YouTube video of us playing the song in a garden, again with a bunch of musician friends. We’re really proud of it. Search for “Choices To Kill A King” to find it. We’ve loved playing it live, especially on the Bastille tour as Dan from Bastille, who sings on the video, comes on to play it with us and it’s great to watch.

We like to play very quiet and then very loud.

Wolves

Children Who Start Fires

This year has been good to us so far. We’ve released our album, two singles, done a headline tour and two great support tours (with Bastille and Dog is Dead). Now we’re working on our second album and looking forward to playing a bunch of festivals in UK and Europe, including coming to Valencia in June or July.

I think this is a song about the music industry. “Wolves will keep you warm,” as in they are wolves but they can help sometimes. Like most artists we have a love-hate relationship with the music industry. We’ve been signed before but it’s only now that we are independent that things are really moving for us. That’s probably for a lot of different reasons. I don’t want to come out and say that I hate labels and the music industry because they can be great and really help artists out, but I will say that I think labels these days are more looking for quick overnight successes (which are usually based on style more than the music). For a band like us that’s not as relevant.

This is a gentle song. It’s got a beautiful string section in it. It’s one of my favourites on the album. I don’t think it’s how Ralph intended it but I see it as a mother talking to her child. And caring for him but also being worried about him growing up and hanging out with the wrong crowd. This song was written before the London riots but it sounds like it’s written about them and I’ll always think of that time when I hear it. I love the idea of having a horrible violent time in London’s history having a light, rolling backing track while the city burns down.

Who are To Kill A King? Tell us a bit about your background, experiences and travels.

What are your influences? As well as bands we like, Ralph (who writes the songs) also gets a bunch of inspiration from TV shows. Especially HBO shows. Could you take us through some of your new album, Cannibals with Cutlery? OK, let’s go. Vámanos. (Sí, hablo un poquito español). I should say that I didn’t write these songs. Ralph did, so all the interpretations are my own. He says that he leaves them open to interpretation, so if I get it miles wrong, then he can’t complain! Haha! I Work Nights and You Work Days A song about living with a partner who works on a different time schedule to you, so though you love them, you barely get to see them. It’s a simple arrangement, just piano and strings. Our bass player Josh arranges all our strings and I really like what he’s done with them here. Also it works well as an opener because it sounds like a sunrise. Cold Skin Our first single. It’s about the end of the world. What would you do/say if you were given a

Funeral

Cannibals with Cutlery This is a simple acoustic song about how when your relationship is breaking down, the one person you would normally turn to for help is the person you can’t. There is a second verse to this song that is not on the record. We may save it for an extended version of the album or an online release. We also play the full version live. Besides She Said I see this as a song about getting fucked up at a festival and falling around the fields with a friend. It’s full of love and I really like the way it gently rolls on. I could listen to it for hours – especially the outro, which is probably the most psychedelic moment on the album.

Fictional State This was our first single. The song is open to interpretation but it was written about a couple who were going to break up, trying to work out what to do after the woman finds out she is pregnant. Letter to My Lover, the Dylan Fan This is the last track on the record. Like most of the record, I produced this and I like the way it grows and grows. There is a build-up section where the lyrics subtly refer to many of our other songs. I like that the last song on the album does that. The song is letter a dying man writes to his partner and it ends with Ralph whispering gently in your ear. I’m proud of it.

FOOD

When the Going Gets Tough Cream Tea and Pimm’s

Cream Tea • 40 gm cool butter • 225 gm flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1½ tablespoons caster sugar • 110 ml / 4 fl oz. milk • Pre-heat the oven to 220C, gas mark 7.

By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Wimbledon time is nearly here and with the arrival this month in Valencia of London-based band To Kill a King, our global tour briefly visits the shores of Britain. For, if not famed for our cuisine, at least we are famed for our cakes and music. And as Billy Ocean says, “When the going gets tough / The tough go baking!” So what could be better than that fastest cake in the West, the West Country scone (’s gone)? The rivalry over the origins of the cream tea between Devon, Cornwall and Dorset has ended in many a messy scrape so we will just call it simply a cream tea, the natural choice for counties rich in dairy products and fruit preserves. What can be said, however, is that traditionally in Devon they put the jam on top of the cream and in Cornwall it is vice versa, jam topped with cream. Also, in Cornwall, the original cream teas were served with a yeast cake, more akin to a farton. Whatever the history of the scone, they are delicious with a cup of tea or a glass of Pimm’s and a great fanfare to summer days. The Queen of the Scones, otherwise known as my mother, is incredibly rude about my somewhat invented recipes for scones, so to avoid any other scathing comments about sogginess or indigestibility, please stay puritanically on the path and use her recipe to the letter. Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub in the butter using your fingers. Stir in the sugar and mix. Mix in the milk using the back of the blade of a knife. You need just enough to make not too sticky a dough. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes nice and soft.

Combine all ingredients in a large punch bowl. When ready to serve, ladle into ice-filled glasses and garnish with fruit and cucumber slices from the punch bowl. After the Beach! This month’s events at La Ola Fresca Saturday 8th 17.30h: Taller de Cocina – Cooking in English, ‘Picnic Time’! 15€. Wednesday 12th 17.30h – 18.30h: For children – Making ‘Sweeties/Bonbons’ with Celia. 5.50€.

On a lightly floured board, roll out the pastry to about 3 cm and deep. Don’t be tempted to roll it too thin or your scones will not rise. Neatly cut out about 12 scones with a pastry cutter and place on a baking tray. Dust with flour and pop into your pre-heated oven and bake for about 12 – 15 minutes, being careful not to burn them on top.

Sunday 16th 19.30h: After the Beach – Acoustic concert with Celia y Angelo. Voluntary contribution. Saturday 22nd 19.30h – 21.00h: Concert by To Kill a King, from London to Valencia for Día de la Música. Sunday 30th 19.30h: After the Beach – Sushi workshop, pay for what you eat!

Cool slightly on a wire rack and then cut in half. Spread strawberry jam and cream – cream or jam first, you decide. In Spain, probably the best cream to use is the fresh one that is more similar to crème fraîche available in most supermarkets. With predictions of a chilly summer in Spain, get yourself right in that British summer mood with a glass of homemade Pimm’s:

Pimm’s • 3½ oz. sweet sherry or port • 7 oz. sweet vermouth • 10 oz. gin • 3½ oz. Cointreau • 2½ quarts sparkling lemonade (see below) • 10 mint sprigs • 1/2 cucumber, thinly sliced • Handful of strawberries, quartered • 1/2 orange, thinly sliced • 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced • Ice cubes • Punchbowl or large pitcher, ladle • Highball glasses

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

JACARANDA Sensation Food

We went with friends to an intensely curious event last Tuesday night at ‘El IVAM’. It was a demonstration of pâtisserie making as part of a new ‘Art and Gastronomy’ exhibition at the museum. This was the inaugural event – I like exhibition inaugurations, they are always fun, especially to people watch. Fast forward to Thursday and our visit to Jacaranda, a relatively new restaurant in the Carmen. It has a very attractive interior but, as it was literally the first night warm enough this year to eat al fresco, we decided to take advantage of their terrace. We were welcomed by Gema, one of the owners – the other is Pedro, also her partner in life. We immediately took a liking to this smiley, enthusiastic and friendly lady. She gave us menus and described dishes with such delight that we told her to choose our meal. Pedro came out moments later with a Valencia microbrewery beer as an aperitif. Some of its fermentation is in the bottle and there is a small amount of sediment on the bottom. Apparently the best way to pour is to slowly pour the first three-quarters of the bottle, and then to swill the bottle and pour the cloudy remains. The beer is smooth and has hints of orange and is surprisingly good. Gema came out moments later nursing three or four bottles of wine in her arms and put them on the table, telling us she thought any one of them would be a great accompaniment to the food she had chosen for us. They were a Rioja, a Ribera del Duero, a Utiel-Requena and an ecological Monastrell from Jumilla, Honoro Vera, and she gave her highest recommendation to the latter. Jumilla is

a much maligned wine and wine region (it sits close to Alicante), but this was excellent, fruity and well-balanced from the bodegas of Juan Gil. We once had friends whose child went to a very nice, private school in Salisbury. The school meals were reputed to be extremely inventive, exciting and exotic. When we once asked the child what the food was like she described it as “fizzy mouth food”. Jacaranda was about to give us the same experience. Long white oblong plates were then laid in readiness for an amuse-bouche, two breaded prawns served with a coulis of pineapple and mango. And so the feast began. Vegetable pakoras were first up, deep fried in gram flour and served with a spicy and unusual tamarind sauce for dipping for 7€. Panko-breaded scallops were next, served with basil leaves and a wasabi mayonnaise, to be eaten much the same way as Vietnamese spring rolls, with the leaf wrapped around the scallop and dipped in the wasabi – the combined flavours perfectly blending. Panko, by the way, is a Japanese-style course for 10€.

two excellent chefs in the kitchen – they really deserve to succeed. Jacaranda is great to pop into for a drink and a tapa at any time of the day but is excellent quality and value for meals, too. There is a nice room upstairs perfect for parties and they are happy to discuss group menus. Our final savoury course was Iberian pork meatballs skewered on to a stalk of roast lemongrass, served on little beds of shredded vegetables with a peanuty dipping sauce for 10€. Tasty! To finish we had a small chocolate medley, a soft and delicious brownie with a mouth-watering praline and a warm ganache. They are still building up a wine list but already have a good selection of whites and reds on offer at reasonable prices. This is a lovely place to eat, staffed front of house by one of the friendliest and enthusiastic of teams around and with Photos © Xavi Lavin / Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

RANA BOOKS Who are Rana Books? The idea for Rana Books was conceived a little over a year ago by Christina Gebbia and Lázaro Vicedo Gracia. This entrepreneurial team has been creating companies in Valencia for the past 15 years. Rana Books was a fusion of ideas captured while travelling about and the bookshop was inaugurated almost one year ago to this date. What courses/activities/events can we find at Rana Books? The focus of Rana Books is on education and the learning of the English language. We try to organize events to promote literature or professional seminars for specific language sectors such as teacher training. Last month we completed our academy and now offer a range of intensive courses from the A1 to B2 level. Apart from courses, we offer over 35 conversation classes per week to cater to our more than 300 students. Tell us about your range of books. Rana Books has a wide range of literature, the majority imported from the USA, Canada and the UK. We only carry new books and try hard to provide an up-to-date but quality selection. Have your sales been affected by online buying? I think that all bookshops are affected Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

in some way by Internet sales in this day and age, yet the effect doesn’t necessarily have to be negative. In our case, all of our books are also available for purchase through our online store and various portals, so I think everything balances out in the end. The crisis is on everyone’s mind, how are you holding up? Before the crisis, there wasn’t such a demand to learn English in Valencia; maybe opening a business like this during this time period was a good opportunity. However, in order to survive, and this goes for any sector, you need to continually be one step ahead and not afraid to change strategy. What were some of the most memorable events in this past year that were hosted by Rana Books? I personally love when authors come to present their work and this year we were very fortunate to host many well-known novelists. I also very much enjoyed a young writers expo that we did. There is a lot of talent in Valencia. RANA BOOKS Av. Reino de Valencia, 15 Zona Cánovas Tel: 96 332 81 28 www.ranabooks.es

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Albelda's last match at Mestalla?

YOU COULDN’T WRITE IT

president learned of the fact through the media.

Valencia Club de Fútbol is living one of its most desperate moments in recent history. The failure to finish fourth and assure Champions League football for next season will cost the club dearly. Firstly, benefits from the competition had already been written into next season’s budget. Secondly, the loss of revenue will mean that VCF will have to sell some of their prized assets in order to balance the books, added to which the allure of Champions League matches is always a strong bargaining factor in attracting players to the team.

Valverde cited the unstable atmosphere that surrounds the club as the decisive factor in his decision to pack his bags and also left little doubt that he would have continued if Llorente had been allowed to carry on. He told reporters that, with Llorente’s agreement, the club had decided to sign Iago Aspas from Celta for a not insignificant amount of money. But following the resignation of Llorente, the Foundation, who now control VCF, decided against the move, which was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Valverde, who decided he could not continue under such circumstances. We will be able to see if Aspas is any good next season as he has been bought by Liverpool.

Off the pitch, the situation is even more disastrous since the resignation of expresident Manuel Llorente. The manager coveted by many clubs, Ernesto Valverde, has announced that he will not renew his contract. He told the players just before the vital away game to Sevilla that he would not be carrying on, whilst the incoming

Football-wise, three of the last four games have resulted in victory…starting with the early kick off away to Rayo Vallecano. Two first-half goals from Soldado, a third from Guardado and a late goal from Valdez, who only seems to score in added time, meant that the Chés took away all three points from their visit to the capital. They

were back there a week later to take on Getafe, who lacked ambition. Valencia won 0-1 thanks to a goal from Mathieu but the result could have and should have been más contundente. This result kept the pressure on Real Sociedad, who had stumbled somewhat in their latest fixtures, allowing Valencia to slip into the coveted fourth place, but the Basques responded by earning a priceless victory away to Sevilla. The penultimate game of the season was a home fixture to Granada who, although losing 1-0 in Mestalla, confirmed their First Division status for next season thanks to the way that other results went. One of the games that Valencia were keeping an eye on was the Real Sociedad – Real Madrid match which ended 3-3 as the Basques scored an injury time equaliser which meant that Valencia needed to win their last game against Sevilla to be assured of Champions League action. During the run up to the game, the Basque newspaper Gara published an article saying that Valencia was obliged to “ganar, o a comprar, el partido que le queda por jugar en Sevilla”, translated as “to win, or

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

buy, the match they have left to play against Sevilla”. After watching the match, it seems that the Basques beat the Valencians to the ref because his actions were inexplicable. The blanc i negres came out serious and fighting and an excellent goal from Banega gave them a well-deserved lead. The official then refused to award Valencia two stone cold penalties and didn’t see a Sevilla defender throw a well-aimed elbow into the jugular of Soldado. Negredo equalised with a spectacular overhead kick and then, in two minutes, the referee turned VCF’s season upside down. After failing to see Valencia’s penalty claims, he did spot something that he translated as a penalty offence in favour of Sevilla, which Negredo duly converted. To add insult to injury, the man in the middle plus his linesman invented a supposed elbow from Jonas to explain an unexplainable red card. It should be said as well that the play-acting from the Sevilla player, Alberto Moreno, was shameful but it seems to be de rigueur in Spanish football these days.

Incredibly, after the break the Chés still came out fighting with 10 men and managed to score an equaliser before tired legs and gaps in the park made it easy for Sevilla to hit on the counter, scoring two more goals and condemning Valencia to fifth place as Real Sociedad won away to Deportivo, assuring them fourth spot and sending Depor into the second division. After the game, Valverde made official his decision to not continue and the favourite for the job is Miroslav Djukić, a Mestalla idol… then again, so was Pellegrino. Tino Costa apparently has been sold to Spartak Moscow for 7 million, yo pongo el lazo, and more will follow him out the door. The new president Salvo has said that the future of the club will be based on bringing players through the ranks, which is a great concept that has had very little success in modern football, with the exception of Barcelona. As for signings, who knows, the club is in such a chaotic state that no one really knows what will happen. It is going to be an interesting and painful summer for VCF.

Meanwhile Levante UD have been treading water since Christmas. In the second half of the season the granotas have managed just 16 points, a tally that if they had repeated in the first half would have meant relegation. Next season Levante will face a trying time, they are set to lose influential players through retirement and the need to sell. The negative way they have ended the season has to be broken straight away or otherwise they will struggle. So, Europa League next season for Valencia. They may even face my beloved Wigan, (FA Cup Winners 2013). You couldn’t write it!!! STOP PRESS! DJUKIĆ IS THE NEW MANAGER OF VALENCIA CF. Mark Hulton

WOMAN

Okay, so I know it’s super repetitive and overly clichéd, and I would never want you to feel like reading my column is akin to an uncomfortable ride in the lift with your next door neighbour, but c’mon! What is it with this weather, man?! Talk about schizophrenic – in the past week I have used my umbrella twice and stepped out in sandals on more than one occasion, then immediately regretted spending hard-earned cash on a presummer pedicure within minutes, putting my feet directly back into my beloved ankle booties as soon as I could. My dear friend H. is currently living in Paris, and I naively bought flights in May thinking it would be Spring there then, but the City was quite evidently still deep in the throes of Winter and I borrowed scarves, gloves and even hats the entire time. But Paris is different. Paris is practically always wet and cold, and I must have been “having a moment”, as my mother says, when I thought I could enjoy a few days of nice weather with my pals. Yet this marvellous place I call home, Valencia, land of the sunshine, land of the oranges, land of the infinite stretches of beach, is laughing in my face with its very half-hearted attempt at Spring. The joke of it all is, of course, that when Summer finally does arrive, it will do so with a huge, Nit del Foc-style fireworks display of heat wave, and we shall all complain and grumble loudly to each other, under our breaths, and especially in the lift. I like to carry out a slow release of my limbs this time of year, exposing my winter skin gradually – a sleeveless top here, an ankle there, a kneecap the next week... I need to fully prepare myself mentally for Summer dressing – I am English by nature, after all, and we

Brits are not renowned for our sleek Summer style nor for our knack to tan easily. I wish I had the smooth olive skin of my cousins, whose Lebanese genes, though in the same proportions as my own, have seemed to flourish with age. They not only look healthier than me all the time, but also turn a deep and beautiful bronze without even thinking about it. I, however, although thankfully I do not turn that frightful British Pink (apologies if I have offended anybody here but you must admit there is a fine line between English Rose and the unattractive Benidorm Burn), do need many an afternoon laid out on the beach a la pig-on-a-spit to even notice the difference in shades of pale. And we all are ever so good at convincing ourselves, are we not? You can hear it now, “Don’t I look brown? Aren’t I tan?” And there I am cursing said person in my head whilst I grin and bear the awful truth that of course they look brown – they are standing next to me, after all! I am well informed by my mother and her weekly padel game group that – and here comes a bit of product endorsement I can assure you I am not sponsored for – the selftanning Deliplus brand towelettes on sale in Mercadona are fantastic. I once had a nasty, streaky experience with self-tan. Aside from the smell, which is most odd and lingers all day, if not month, and despite have done all the prep – the exfoliating, buffing and moisturising most necessary before slapping on the product – I still ended up like I had a terrible skin pigmentation condition that made my legs quite orange in parts. Best stick to the tinted moisturiser and best bronzing powder I have ever owned, of which I acquired several pots in Ann Summers’ closing down sale. When I run out it will be a sad day for my face, which will no longer boast a shimmery glow not unlike Jennifer Lopez’s naturally honey-toned face. Now I am seriously kidding myself.

year hiatus in which I was living in, let’s face it, a pueblo, just ten minutes from Valencia but what felt like another planet to me, I am finally back where I belong, in the centre of all the action, the eye of the storm, flat-sharing with my dearest, bestest and oldest gal-pal, Lolita Devine. It has been non-stop fun and games since we moved in. Which, to be honest, is just like before, only minus the 25€ taxi fare home! I can now stagger straight to my front door. The flat is beautiful, recently done up, huge, airy, light and quiet, with plenty of room for all my shoes, and a stone’s throw from errrythang. So much so, that Lolita and I have barely enjoyed an evening to ourselves. If the lights are on, the doorbell is bound to ring. Our lovely and generous friends have inundated us with gorgeous housewarming gifts, and we have learnt our lesson from our previous shared abode that clear ground rules must be set re arriving empty-handed expecting aperitifs, dinner or even a bed for a night! Speaking of Ann Summers, the old store on Paseo Ruzafa is now Tiger – the most exciting place for someone who has just moved home and the source of more than one of the aforementioned presents, I am sure. Super cheap and cheerful, it’s almost like the bazaar area at Ikea in one space. From kitchen cloths emblazoned with kitsch moustache prints, to freestanding neon lights, and lovely cards, gift wrap, candles and even food, it is very hard to avoid just ‘popping in’ and leaving empty-handed. I certainly haven’t done so yet, but I am always a sucker for silly trinkets and smelly candles, and everyone looks more sun-kissed by candlelight! Anita Darling

So Paris was super fun, and though cold, made me anxious to get back to June in Valencia, with its al fresco living and weekends spent frolicking on the beach (weather permitting). After a near twoPhoto: Cecille / Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA BOOKS

Mark Hodder Tell us something about your background, travel, work and experiences. I was born in Southampton but, after leaving home in my late teens, never returned there. I lived in Winchester, Maidstone, Norwich, Canterbury and London, moving in accord with the dictates of education, work and, on occasion, whim. I knew I wanted to be a writer from the age of 11, when I read Edgar Rice Burroughs (the creator of Tarzan). A few years later, I told the school careers advisor, who responded, “So, office work, then.” The course of study that came closest to offering what I needed was Fine Art (in actual fact, a far cry from what I needed), so I ended up at Art College, somehow dabbling with filmmaking before attempting to freelance as an illustrator. My 20s were lean years, during which I was hopelessly off-course. When I hit 30, I managed to regain some measure of control, returning to university for a Cultural Studies degree. It involved the analysis of the functions of narrative, so I was finally doing something that might help with my ambition, and I started to ‘test the waters’ by writing short stories. After graduation, I was a commercial radio scriptwriter for four years (dreadful job) before joining the BBC as a ‘content executive’ for the programmes website Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

MARK HODDER (basically, a writer with a stupid job title). These roles helped to hone the technical skills I required, such as how to say the most with the fewest words, and how to pace a sentence so your writing has the appropriate rhythm.

“The Secret of Abdu El Yezdi” begins a new Burton & Swinburne trilogy. It advances the ongoing story arc but also offers an entry point for new readers, though I can’t describe how without giving the plot away!

After the BBC I freelanced as a copywriter for two years, but by this point I was sick of the commercial world and desperate for a change of lifestyle. A holiday to Cuba had altered the way I perceived the world. I needed to feel a greater sense of personal fulfilment … which is when Valencia entered the story and the publishing industry ‘knocked at my door.’

What brought you to Valencia and how do you find it as a place to live and work?

Could you tell readers about your books, “The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack,” “The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man,” and “Expedition to the Mountains of the Moon?” This is my ‘Burton & Swinburne’ trilogy. They feature real historical characters … Sir Richard Francis Burton, Algernon Swinburne, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and many others … and are set in the early 1860s. In them, Burton becomes aware that his world is somehow askew, and his investigations lead to the discovery that time has been altered and history changed. Hints from the future have caused science and engineering to advance too rapidly, so the British Empire is replete with outlandish machines and bizarrely modified animals, and hardly at all resembles the one recorded in our history books. The novels are fast, action-packed, filled with grotesquery and old-fashioned ‘derring-do,’ but also have philosophical depth in that they explore the nature of time and our relationship with it. Tell us about “A Red Sun Also Rises” and your latest book, “The Secret of Abdu El Yezdi.” “A Red Sun Also Rises” is a standalone, independent from the Burton & Swinburne novels. It’s my homage to Edgar Rice Burroughs, a tale in which two mismatched companions are transported to another world where their influence inadvertently disrupts the life cycle of an alien species. It’s about ecology and the positive or negative role faith can play in society.

Boy meets girl. Girl is Spanish. Boy abandons his job (and belongings) to join her. The age-old romance! In truth, it was a remarkable moment in which different strands of life came together and everything clicked into place. By 2008, I was sick of London and bored with copywriting. My family had moved to the Costa del Sol 10 years earlier and during my visits I’d fallen in love with Spain. When I met Yolanda, making the ‘jump’ into a new life was easy. I joined her in Valencia, taught English for a year, then the publishing deal came seemingly out of nowhere, and now I’m living my ideal life as a full-time novelist. The icing on the cake: we have twins on the way! All of which means I feel very happy. I work in my study in the winter and on the balcony in the summer. It’s impossible to underestimate the positive effect Valencia’s climate (and food) has had on my lifestyle. I really enjoy living here and have no intention of ever moving. It’s the first place I can properly call ‘home.’ Interview by Owl For more information: markhodder.blogspot.com.es

VALENCIA SUMMER DAYS & NIGHTS HEY UP, CHUCKS!!! I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I have a little bit of sad news for you all...I don’t know if you have heard, but unfortunately this year’s summer has been cancelled in Valencia!!! Yes, so pack up your bags and it’s off to sunny Scunthorpe, home of the mojito and land of the bikini;)
the only difference being, while you’re drinking your mojito, there will be loads of pensioners playing bingo next to you, and if you see a bikini, you’ll wish that you hadn’t;) Wait a minute, what am I talking about...the summer in Valencia hasn’t been cancelled. We’ve only had a few months where it’s not been clear blue sky, no wind, and no rain. Am I the only one who remembers that all the way up to the end of Feb 2013, the weather had been bloody amazing as usual? To tell you the truth, Las Fallas wasn’t as sunny as it could have been, but apart from that, what’s been the big problema?? We’ve had to wear our jumpers five or six times more than normal???
Please...can everyone put things into perspective and strap on a pair!!!? If you still lived back home (in northern Europe) looking outside at the grey sky and the pouring hail, then you could complain!! OK, rant over, and on that note, it’s time to start talking about this month’s theme...drum roll please... VALENCIAN SUN TERRACES;) Oh yes, it’s that time again, people – sand, sunsets and sambucas!!!!! IT’S THE SUMMMMMMMERRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;) Valencia is tailor-made for the summer with all its outdoor terraces, pool parties and festivals. First of all, I’m going to give you a quick guide to all the terraces around town and by the beach, which may float your boat, kicking off with Sol i Luna (C/ del Mar, 29), behind Plaza de la Reina.
It’s a funky little bar which used to be run by a good friend of mine from London, who created a really relaxed vibe, playing all the new music from the UK and around the world. The decor matched the atmosphere and the boss led the way training the staff, showing them how things should be done.... sin prisa pero sin pausa;)
Now it’s being run by a group of Spanish and Italians, I think, who are trying to carry on where James left off. For me, one of the

24/7 VALENCIA

best things about this bar is the terrace, which soaks up all the rays that the sun has to give from about 14.00h – 19.00h, if I’m not mistaken. Also in the same area, Finnegans Irish Pub (Plaza de la Reina, 19) offers you great British food with nice cold pints and opens around midday. The bar itself is huge inside and, in my opinion , is definitely a challenger to be one of the best Irish bars in Spain looks-wise.
The sun has got his hat on from about lunchtime (15.00h) till 20.00h and the views of the Cathedral and the rest of the square are breathtaking;) Crossing over the road you have 100 Montaditos (Plaza de la Reina, 10) where, on Sundays and Wednesdays, everything on the menu is 1€ (apart from the salads, 2€)!!!!!!! Yes, and that includes pints of Tinto de verano, a lovely, fruity, summery drink (be careful not to have more than three ice cubes or it will take the taste away) and pints of lager, too!!! The good thing about this place is that if you fancy getting on it early, you can sit outside on the terrace from about 09:30h – 10.00h while the waitresses are setting up, plus the sun will be shining directly on your face from the second you sit down.... NICE;))))))) The other terraces to check out are:
Bar/ Restaurante 39º 27N (Port America’s Cup, Marina Norte P/6), the recommended choice of drink is a bottle of chilled ‛house blonk’. Apart from being the best price, it’s actually quite charming once you get to know it;) and as for the views...SIMPLY SPECTACULAR. Laydown (Marina Real Juan Carlos I, Local 8) as I mentioned in the last issue, this is a great little venue with comfy sofa beds looking at the splendour of the port. On most Saturdays you can enjoy all of the above whilst listening to great deep house music with, of course, a giant mojito in hand;)
As this is a very popular venue in the summer, please don’t hesitate to give me a call if you want to reserve a section in the V.I.P. with reduced rates on bottles and the rest of the drinks for groups or just if you want to look like a don;) 647 585 494.

St Patrick’s Irish Bar (Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 69) has a nice little terrace with quite a lot of shade as well, for those of you who don’t want to end your day looking like a lobster.
I won’t lie to you, this bar is one of my favourites, not for its terrace, but for its extremely down-to-earth staff, its cool as FUNK attitude with the punters, and regarding the banter well, they have bags of it!;) As for me (DJ Shaft) I will be playing regularly every Thursday during the summer, starting on Thursday the 13th in Club 47 (C/ Quart 47, Barrio del Carmen). I’ll be playing all the old classics ranging from James Brown, the Doors, Nirvana to the Prodigy, mashed up with all the new stuff by Daft Punk, David Guetta and many more. Seriously, it’s hard to choose where you want to go to dance in the summer, as most places play very similar music, but I can guarantee that when you pop your head into Club 47 when I’m there, you won’t be sorry.
At the moment there is a 241 drinks offer on copas (huge spirit and mixer) b4 01:30h and if you come in big groups, I’m sure I’ll be able to get a round of shots in;) OK, party people, that’s all for now. I know this month has mainly been about the sun, but trust me it’s the calm before the storm. July and August is when all the fun really begins, with festivals, live bands and banging DJs. This month is all about getting tanned and chilling out to cool grooves on the terraces. Stay classy, Valencia
JT L.T.D BABY;) P.S. 24/7 Valencia writer and DJ Dom Scott is DJing funky / deep house every Saturday and Sunday at Laydown from 15.30h – 20.30h. Check his great website for more info & tunes www.djdomscott.com

Carribean’s Puerto (Marina Real Juan Carlos, Local 6) This is a fairly new terrace with great potential, which might be investing in some really good parties this summer, so keep your eye out for that one!
