Yes. Spain may have its problems but noone can take away its spirit completely. When the going gets tough…the tough get going. For many people now is the time to work hard and play hard too. It has been said that some newspapers tend to focus on 90% negative news, which is not actually a realistic representation of how things really are. Despite the doom and gloom there are plenty of constructive things happening in Valencia, it’s all a question of perspective. ‘24/7 Valencia’ is now in its thirteenth year and is recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, The Guardian, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Business Traveller Magazine, CNN.com, Levante-EMV, El País and many more. This is a magazine run by an integrated & international team of writers, photographers and designers from around the world. We started with nothing and we came up the hard way. In ‛Restaurant of the month’, food lovers are in for a treat as we visit ‘Yuso’, an authentic Valencian restaurant in the historic centre with rice dishes and more. In another report, classy tapas are savoured at ‘Mar Cuatro’ while a world famous tennis player dines discreetly at the next table! In ‛Comment’, El Gazza casts a jaundiced eye on another construction fiasco in the Comunidad but also praises the
accessibility of living in Valencia. Indeed, the local live music scene is quietly thriving with more concerts than ever and all within walking or cycling distance. Check out our agenda at the back for live music and clubbing nights. Talking of nightlife, enjoy an exclusive photographic collection of ‘24/7 Valencia party people’ grooving late into the night. We also have exclusive shots of bands and revellers at the legendary FIB 13 festival. On Thursday, the 19th of September, we invite you all to a little ‘24/7 Valencia’ party at Café Cronopio, in the hip barrio of Benimaclet. There will be live music by ‘Folk-Jazz-Blues’ at 21.30h and tapas & drink at good prices. It’s free entry to all our readers. Greetings to Berklee, Erasmus, teachers, bar staff and all of you who are new to this special city… “My conclusion this summer Was there was much too much rain So i ran off on Thursday With a dance troupe from Spain Where wine, dance and music Is the name of the game…” (Spanish Dance Troupe - Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci) See you soon! 24/7 Valencia team

ROBI BERTASI Tell us about your background, travels and experiences. Well, I had to leave my homeland, Argentina, in 1976… and I soon appeared in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid. La transición to democracy was beginning in Spain and the Plaza was my hangout. It was there that I observed and took part in the history of the profound changes that occurred in Spain as it awakened from the past and its long dictatorship. Street art and street trade all served to celebrate life. In those days, Madrid was a really wonderful city. There was a sense of solidarity, the women were beautiful and the scene was set for a transition to a democracy that promised a more just and creative society. I worked every Sunday in the Rastro (street market) and during the week we invaded the daily life of los madrileños
with our concept of art combined with life. Money wasn’t a problem, it appeared in any number of ways. We invented all sorts of fun ways to reach our most prized goal: FREE TIME. Life was art, love and the fight for a better society. It was a pleasure to participate in this era when the young people were defying the morality of their elders and we enjoyed, among other things, the sexual promiscuity of those wonderful times, which was something to be really grateful for. Things changed bit by bit…and I travelled all over Spain and one day I parked my van in Murcia and, almost without realising it, I started to take my first steps into business, for want of a better phrase. These were successful projects that made good money (bars with original concepts and underground shops, etc.). I also started my travels around the world, fundamentally to Asia. How was Valencia when you first moved here and how do you find it now? I came here to live in Valencia in 1989 and
it was here that I continued to celebrate la vida even though I was a bit contaminated by the yuppie wave that was enveloping us. Valencia had the sea, an airport and a good, original version cinema: Albatros. That was more than enough reason for it to be the ideal place to live in and use as a base for my travels. It was a very interesting city; it had a crime novel vibe to it. I couldn’t stay away from this intriguing atmosphere and I experienced situations where I got to know all kinds of people, some in power and others on the margins of society. We would all come together in a few dives: business entrepreneurs, politicians, judges, prostitutes, con artists, drug dealers, artists, and policemen. All of us mixed up together, surrounded by smoke, alcohol and other herbs. In those days, there was no City of Arts & Sciences, America’s Cup, Formula 1, or tacky buildings ruining barrios and beaches. Valencia had everything to be a more humane and sustainable city to live in. Instead of extending avenues, it could have prolonged the good health of its citizens, but Valencia took another path and today we are paying the consequences.

Spain in the 1970s
Philosopher
We’re now in a time that could really be interesting for Valencia. No city wants to be singled out for corruption and doing things badly, so I believe there will be some changes for the good. Valencia has become a cosmopolitan city, a multicultural meeting spot and this is a plus if approached in the right way. It will be difficult, but things will improve and we will get there together. How do you see the future for Spain? The future of Spain depends on us: the people. The present is disastrous and the current European model is in decay. If we don’t prepare ourselves to take on the place in the world waiting for us, we run the risk that authoritarianism and the populist messages of the extreme right will gain ground. We should create new paradigms, re-evaluate our relationship with consumerism and guarantee a minimum income for all our citizens, whether they have a job or not. This approach will not gain votes but it’s the only alternative to social genocide. We’ve got to learn to live in a world where the domination of the West is coming to its end and the weakest links in the first world are the first to feel the consequences of its decline. For Spain, Greece, and Portugal to stay in the Euro and the E.U. is more of a prison sentence than an advantage. Tell us about your current projects, your music and the new short film (cortometraje) that features you as the main character. The short film is called “La Concha de la Lora”. It’s the story of a Valenciano who leaves the Barrio del Carmen in the 1970s to go and live in Montevideo, Uruguay.
His idea is to get away from vices and bad company of his life in Valencia and start a fresh new life abroad, with his wife and two-year-old daughter to join him later. However, the reunion with his wife and daughter never occurs and his promises to bring them over from Spain to Uruguay get lost in the nightlife of Montevideo. Forty years later, he returns to the Barrio del Carmen to face the consequences of his actions. Natxo Sanmartín directed the film and the grown daughter is played by Maribel Bravo. It was a lovely experience and it came out well. You can see the trailer on YouTube and the complete short film is being shown in different festivals. On the music front, I’m preparing new songs for ‘Robitango’, my musical alter ego. In this project, I’m applying theories of nouvelle cuisine to tango. The idea is to deconstruct tangos, mixing languages and styles where songs by Jagger and Dylan convert into tangos. It was said of Carlos Gardel that every day he sang better, whereas I can say that every day I sing worse, so in that sense I don’t disappoint anyone. That’s why I have a very loyal and select audience. I had to do something with my failures as a cook and singer and mathematics says that two negatives make a positive. I’m trying to break this principle and I hope that this experience winds up ends negatively so that at least I will have broken the laws of mathematics. I’m also continuing to study the subject topic of why we Argentinians call ourselves boludeo (it comes from ‘boludo’), which is something like contemplation without an objective, an immersion in nothingness in search of an

individual and social Nirvana. But I won’t go on about my main project…to carry on living tomorrow, to laugh at all I can, in good company and with some good wine. Interview by Owl

MI AND L'AU Take us through the tracks of ‘H20’ Fly Together It’s the beginning of the album. We were looking for something quite simple, something that could make people come more easily into what is coming next. It’s a poppy mantra. (laughs)
Mi and L’Au Interview Could you please tell us about the background to your new album ‘H20’? We began recording in Valencia but then had to go back to Finland. The company in charge of moving our stuff was a fake company. Luckily these guys were based in France, so we could locate them and with a little help from our friends get back our properties and finished recording ‘H2O’. But it cost us two months and a ton of energy! We almost lost everything we had on this trip. And got it back! So, the recording was a roller coaster. It’s unbelievable the amount of problems you have to go through in order to simply achieve what you’re supposed to do! Having lived in Valencia, Spain, for a number of years, how does it feel to be back in Finland? How do the two countries compare? The two countries are both surrounded by the sea, situated on the same hemisphere and on the same planet, that’s about it! Over the years, we’ve been more and more building our own laboratory and are spending lots of time crafting, whether it’s music, poetry, sculptures, drawings, videos, etc. We feel more and more at home everywhere. We’ve been lucky to travel around the globe, learning different languages, meeting so many people. And it seems that everywhere we went, expectations are about the same. Only the landscape is changing.
At the same time, we wanted something more for this song. We decided to work with a visual artist from Tel Aviv, Salit Krac, who did a tremendous job. So, this song became its own animation movie as well as being the introduction of ‘H2O’. Here We Are It’s a flash manifesto for life. The expression of a powerful and dark destiny. More Than We Can Say Never forget about your goal, and never think you’ve reached it. May I The dream of a teeny girl and the many questions troubling her young mind. The Book It’s a dark song. An evil song. Some people can DO what you can’t even IMAGINE in your wildest dreams. In fact, that’s where their life begins. One way or the other, it’s dedicated to them. Bêtise du Soir At that point in the album, we needed a recreation. So we thought it could be nice to have this candy bar “à la mode de Mozart”. (laughs) Drown the Sound We always dreamed of painting cities with sounds. That’s one project we have among others. Raging Eye It’s the eagle eye watching the battle from above. Blood everywhere on the score of a modern concerto played by half-dead souls inside a sinking boat.

Water soon takes over but, at the end, there is the sound of percussion rolling around like a wave, as if somebody was looking at the scenery from an unknown shore. Someone very much alive. TV Drives Me Insane Another instrumental. And true! This frequency that comes out from the TV (we’re not even speaking of the programmes, just the frequency) drives us mad. Bonnie Few people remember that when Bonnie and Clyde went for IT, their journey lasted one year and a half. Only one year and a half! And they are not even resting in the same grave. Not even in the same cemetery. Not even in the same city. Not even in the same state. But they are in everybody’s mind, as if their rebellion had reached something universal. Klättra Upp Go higher my friend, always, go higher! Any musical plans for the future? We do not really have the time to plan anything, but it seems that we have enough songs to record a new album before the end of this year. So, expect a new Mi and L’Au album in 2014. Interview by Owl

FOOD
Pan – seared scallops with tomato, tabasco and samphire (or mangetout) By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Now with airline baggage restrictions so stringent you’re lucky to bring your toothbrush aboard, unless you are prepared to absorb extra baggage fees, that great holiday pursuit of souvenir hunting has been more or less curtailed. So rather than bore your friends by sticking their heads in your photos, what better way to share the essence of your journey than with the tastes and aromas encountered on that trip? Now for the confession of a gourmand! I guess it’s clear where my interests lie, as all the important memories in my life, good and bad, come complete with an intrinsic picture of the food of that moment! Especially the travel ones; from an amazing vegetable curry cooked by a young barefoot boy who appeared out of nowhere on a snow-capped mountain in Nepal, to struggling with raw liver in a peanut oil sauce in Japan, right back to a more domestic journey when I was a small girl to the house next door of Mrs. Roberts, and helping arrange slices for her bread and butter pudding. In fact, in case anyone was wondering, the name La Ola Fresca comes from the concept of exactly that, a sort of beachcombing wave, globetrotting the world for different flavours and then attempting to re-create them with whatever most resembles those ingredients when I get back home. So this month I’m sharing my journey to the ion-rich air of Ayrshire, Scotland, where we find fresh scallops from Loch Fyne near Portavadie and salty samphire brought by the fruit and veg man in Otter Ferry and re-create a dish conjured up in the house of local artist Nicola Wilks.
Pan-seared Scallops with Tomato, Tabasco and Samphire (Serves 4) • Olive oil to coat frying pan • 12 queen scallops (3 per person) • 1 cup of white wine (Sauvignon blanc or similar) • 2 tomatoes, core removed and chopped • Dash of tabasco • 3 handfuls of mangetout (or samphire if you can find it!) • Spoonful of rock sea salt (such as Maldon) • Handful chopped mixed herbs such as basil and chives
Remove scallops from pan and retain in a warm place. Retaining the pan juices, add white wine, allow to cook a little while stirring. Add the tomatoes with the dash of tabasco. Add the mangetout (or green beans) and gently cook. When you are ready to serve, return the scallops to the pan to gently reheat in the sauces. Scatter the mixed herbs and serve. September Travels in La Ola Fresca: Open Monday – Sunday 10.00h – 23.30h Every Thursday 20.30h: Speak English – English/ Spanish intercambio.
Queen scallops (vieiras) are one of my favourite foods. They have a light, yet at the same time almost meaty texture thanks to the coral, the more orange/red part of the scallop. A mouthful will, with a hit of the Atlantic, instantly transport you to rocky lochs beneath a brave blue sky. And if you can’t taste the sea air in samphire, a sort of sea asparagus that grows on coastal marshes, it’s time to get the vaporizing nose decongestant out! Unfortunately, samphire would be hard to come by in Valencia, so for this recipe we are going to have to hone our recreation skills and replace the samphire with mangetout (tirabeques in Spanish) and if you can’t find them, replace with fine green beans. Plus add plenty of rock salt to replace that salty crunch. So here we go, taking ‘the high road or the low road’ with Pan-seared scallops with tomato, tabasco and samphire (or mangetout) to ‘Bonny Scotland!’

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
YUSO Before I’d even moved to Valencia, I had heard about the El Carmen neighbourhood. It was described to me by a mousey Valencia girl wearing a pair of oversized glasses. She seemed excited about it. She used lots of words like “young,” “fun,” and “cool.” A warning bell immediately went off in my head. I was picturing a painfully hip enclave, an increasingly common feature of major European cities, filled with the graphic designers and overexcited Erasmus students. The city of Granada was almost entirely ruined for me by such a group, when 20 of them decided to congregate outside my hotel room at four in the morning and one of them screamed, “Dude, what are we doing here? I wanna see a cool fountain!” Thankfully, El Carmen hasn’t quite been overrun by the hipster hordes. Although, I did spot one the other day. He was really going for it, tight jeans, wife beater sleeveless undershirt, brogues, brown hair and an inexplicably red beard. He had an antique valise strapped to his creaking, pre-Industrial Revolution bicycle, which looked like it needed to be taken to a scrap yard and put out of its misery with a few swift blows from a hammer. I may have spotted a tattoo of the same bike on his arm, but he was far away, so it could have easily been a sparrow, or a 1980s-style boom box. Despite this specimen, El Carmen seems to comfortably enjoy the best of both the classic and the post-modern. The narrow streets are lined with beautiful, ornate buildings with high ceilings and wrought iron balconies, yet there is an eclectic mix of bars and a diverse selection of cuisine. Yuso is a perfect example of this mix. Tucked away in an ancient little alleyway covered in bright graffiti, it offers traditional rice dishes, tapas, salads,
meat dishes and hamburgers, and a very well-priced set menu of 15€. It is close by the old Arabic Wall, there are tables outside and the first thing you immediately notice is a lively, almost festive atmosphere. It is open for regular diners Monday to Sunday, but also to private parties, and when we arrived, there was one in full swing. The first starter we ordered was the Patatas Yuso at only 4€. As the signature appetizer, it sort of symbolises the whole ethos behind the place, that being interesting twists on the traditional. In this case, a revamp of Patatas a la pobre, a cheap and simple dish of potatoes fried with peppers and onions and a typically generous, and Spanish, amount of olive oil. The Yuso version was mercifully less heavy on the oil, and came with spring onions and the surprising addition of morcilla. Some may recoil in horror at the thought of eating congealed blood; in fact, my companion was immediately put off. However, after one cautious forkful, her eyes widened and she went in for another taste whispering, “Christ, that’s so good.” Next, to counterbalance the large amount of blood pudding we’d gorged on, we ordered the Courgette carpaccio at 6.50€. Thin slices of courgette with a sharp vinaigrette, topped with shaved Parmesan and toasted almonds. Unorthodox, but light and quite tasty. For the main course we had to test Yuso’s claims of typical Valencian rice. Being Spanish myself, and having spent most of my summers in the Valencia/ Alicante area, I’ve had my fair share of paella. Valencians are fiercely proud of it and there are many theories on exactly how it should be cooked and served. The vibe we had got from Yuso was that this was not a place for haughty purists, and we embraced it, ordering the rice with duck and oyster mushrooms. It was served “meloso,” which means it had a more risotto-like
consistency than regular paella. The flavours were rich, the duck tender and fatty, and perfectly complemented by the mushrooms. Served in a huge pot, the amount was enormous, even for two people. My mother often refers to me as an “antropófago,” implying that I am a beast that will eat everything put in front of me. There is truth to this, and seeing a plate of unfinished food makes me feel sad. But even I couldn’t finish the rice off, and as the waitress carried of the remains, I hung my head in defeat. Our experience at Yuso was enjoyable; the staff were busy, but sweet and attentive. The only disappointment came when we ordered dessert. We were excited at the prospect of trying crêpes with vanilla and dulce de leche, but they had run out, so instead, we opted for the blueberry cheesecake, which was a fair consolation at 4€. In terms of authenticity, Yuso is staffed by Valencians with chefs from the region. This restaurant is a just stone’s throw from the landmark Torres de Serranos, off a side street from C/ Roteros. Worth the search. FIB 13 was fun! Inevitably, there were less people than the previous year due to the economic crisis and the increase in IVA. However, around 134, 000 fun-loving souls joined the revelling for some great live music and lazy days at the beach. Enjoy these exclusive photos of FIB 13 by Kaiko, a member of the 24/7 Valencia team and one of Spain’s most experienced music photographers. The good news is that 2014 will be the 20th anniversary of FIB, which will make it a very special one!

A pensive Djukic
A NEW DAWN RISES After the heartbreak of missing out on the Champions League this year with a final day defeat at Sevilla last season, Valencia CF go into the 201314 campaign hoping for their first major trophy since their Copa del Rey victory over Getafe in 2008. Valencia have now become known as a selling club and star players like David Villa, Silva, Mata, Alba and, more recently, Roberto Soldado have left as the club continue making inroads into their crippling debts. The new Mestalla continues to remain an empty shell on the city skyline, and the man brought in to try and give the fans the success they crave is Serbian Miroslav Djukic, an ex-Valencia player who performed miracles as the coach for Valladolid last year. Djukic had his first competitive game in charge of Valencia in July 2013 when his team was defeated 2-1 by Karlsruhe, the first of three pre-season friendlies in Germany. Valencia then hosted AC Milan in the Guinness International Cup, a competition comprising eight teams playing matches over a few weeks in Spain and the USA. A 2-1 home defeat set up a clash with the other Milan club, Inter, in New Jersey. They won that 4-0 to give them a fifth-sixth place confrontation with Everton in Miami. Again, Valencia secured victory thanks to a solitary goal from Michel.
Valencia’s final warm-up game was with Olympiakos, contesting the 42nd Trofeo Naranja. First played in 1959, previous opponents for this annual event have included Santos (with Pele), Ajax, and even Blackpool in 1962. Valencia carved out a 2-1 victory over their rivals from Athens, with Banega and Postiga notching the goals. The new dawn finally arrived on August 17th with the first league game against Málaga, a shadow of the team that finished sixth last year. With financial problems even more woeful than Valencia, a summer exodus was inevitable and Pellegrini, Baptista, Demichelis, and ex-Valencia stars Isco and Joaquín are just a few to have found new homes. Valencia signalled their intentions for the season by naming a youthful side that included academy players Juan Bernat and Fede, with Diego Alves preferred in goal to local boy Guaita. The match itself was a drab affair. Málaga, with former German international Bernd Schuster in charge, proved difficult to break down and chances were few and far between. It was an error by Málaga’s keeper Willy that gifted Valencia the points, the Argentinian flapping at a cross and Ricardo Costa gleefully stabbed home from close range. Valencia then travelled to Espanyol for jornada 2 and were outplayed in a 3-1 loss, the only positive from the match…a goal from Postiga. Valencia have since added to their squad by signing Colombian striker
Dorlan Pabón from the Mexican club Monterrey, and he made his debut in the 3-2 defeat at home to Barcelona in the third round of league games. Barcelona are already on fire after a 7-0 demolition of Valencia’s other club, Levante UD, and an away victory at Málaga thanks to a goal by Adriano, and they were in no mood to let their 100 % league record slip at Mestalla. Their crisp interchange of short passes frequently created chances for the Catalans as they carved open the Valencia defence with ease. A hat trick for Messi inside 41 minutes had the azulgranas 3-0 to the good and Valencia fans fearing a repeat of the Levante score-line. To Valencia’s credit they continued to fight for every ball and the fantastic two goals in injury time of the first half from Postiga gave Los Chés fans renewed hope coming into the interval. A mesmerising second half saw Barcelona create the bulk of the chances with Diego Alves keeping the home side in the game with a series of one-on-one saves. Toward the end of the match, Valencia striker Jonas had a shot pushed by the fingertips of Víctor Valdés onto the bottom of the post, leaving Barça to collect the three points, and once again find themselves in familiar La Liga territory, top of the table. Across the city, Levante did put their nightmare start at the Nou Camp behind them with their first point of the new campaign in a stalemate with Sevilla in their second league game. Things got even better for las
twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 granotas in their next match, when they came back from the Madrid suburb of Vallecas with all three points after a 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Rubén García opened the scoring for Levante and things got worse for the home side in the 60th minute when Bangoura was dismissed, but the hosts looked stronger with 10 men and seemed to be heading for a share of the spoils when Vallecano’s Joaquín Larrivey equalised late on. With the last kick of the game, substitute Andreas Ivanschitz won it for the visitors to further bolster claims that the Austrian international should be in the starting line-up for Levante’s next game, against Real Sociedad, at home later this month. In September, last season’s Capital One Cup winners Swansea City will be visiting the city when they play Valencia in a Europa League game on the 19th. This will see the return of Pablo Hernández to Mestalla for the
first time since his 5.5 million pounds move to the Welsh club in 2012. FC St. Gallen of Switzerland and the Russian outfit Kuban Krasnodar, who have ex-Valencia defender Ángel Dealbert in their ranks, complete Group A with all four teams playing each other once on a home-and-away basis before the knockout stages begin. Tickets for Levante and Valencia home games can be bought from the box offices at the respective grounds. More information can be obtained at: http://es.levanteud.com http://www.valenciacf.com

MAZINGER Z’S EMPTY TROUSERS
When Top Gear decided to do a show in Spain recently, driving from Gibraltar to Madrid, the viewers got a glimpse of a town with hundreds of completely empty condominiums. This seems to have shocked the British audience, unaware of the scale of the burst building bubble in this country. Then they drove down the road to a brand new ‘international’ airport that is also empty (no, not Castellón or Huesca or the other empty airports, but Ciudad Real). After drag racing on the 2.5-mile runway, they finally drove to the next town to choose one house, out of streets of hundreds that were all empty, to spend the night. While this was astonishing to the UK audience, to quote a Spanish journalist, “In Spain these days you can be amazed but never surprised.” The fact is, we are getting depressingly used to such staggering waste. The most (in)famous architect from Valencia, if not Spain, is Santiago Calatrava. He is currently being charged by the Italian public prosecutor for wasting a few public millions on a bridge in Venice, overshooting the budget and leaving unforeseen maintenance costs for generations to come. Even so, the amounts in question pale into insignificance compared to the damage he has inflicted on Valencia’s public coffers for the same reasons. Strangely, however, perhaps the most Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia
newswor thy example of Spanish architectural white elephants, just down the road in Benidorm, turned out to be a hoax. It was reported that those involved in building InTempo, the EU’s tallest residential building, decided half-way through the project to make it much taller, but they forgot that the extra tens of storeys would need a lift. The story turned out to be untrue, but was taken up by the Spanish and British mass media, who apparently found the tale amazing but not surprising. Even so, many of the flats have still not been sold (natch) and it stands like a huge pair of Mazinger Z’s empty trousers. Some people are aghast at Benidorm’s apparent environmental nightmare of a landscape, as if Manhattan has been teleported to a once-charming bay surrounded by sleepy olive and almond groves. Nevertheless, there is an argument that says that this vertical expansion is more environmentally friendly than horizontal. Two minutes’ drive from the huge mass of vertical concrete, you can be up in the pretty Sierra Gelada seaside range, looking down on it amongst buzzing crickets. Cities in English-speaking countries, on the other hand, tend to sprawl horizontally, covering enormous swathes of land. Valencia provides a good example of this difference. You can watch an international football match in VLC’s stadium, yet within a couple of minutes on foot you can be strolling among fields of lettuces and tiger nuts, or cycling along a path that will take you across miles of agricultural gardens up into the mountains towards the Maestrazgo range. Barcelona is similar, hemmed in by the range crowned by Tibidabo, beyond which lies the lush Collserola natural park.
Another advantage of Valencia over a city like London (apart from the climate) is, in my opinion, undoubtedly its size. This is also a plus compared to Barcelona, again in my biased opinion. I lived for many years near London, and for several in the Catalan capital, but whenever I revisit these cities I now find their size daunting, unnatural and inhuman. Commuting becomes a daily twohour slog, as does simply going out to see friends in another part of town. In Valencia, I jump on a public bike and am never more than 30 minutes from anywhere. It is also flat and sunny, which helps, although the cycle lane system leaves much room for improvement, and City Hall is considering legislating to make all cyclists wear a helmet in the city. As I have already mentioned, the countryside is immediately nearby, making it easy to get away, too. Upon returning from a weekend away by car, you also avoid the two-hour tailbacks common upon entering Barcelona or Madrid. But there is another, less tangible reason why I now prefer cities the size of Valencia. It is a reason which, had anyone mentioned it to me a decade ago, I would have dismissed as nonsense. The fact is, people in bigger cities move faster. You can only notice this phenomenon if you have lived in both kinds. When I visit Barcelona or London now, I feel like I’m being pushed about as I walk on the street, with people sometimes tutting and scowling at my slow pace. In fact, I have since learnt of the studies by the Bornsteins, which show a strikingly linear relationship between a city’s size and walking pace. The bigger (and richer) the city, the faster people walk, with all of the possible implications this suggests regarding social interaction. Of course, this is only one manifestation of the general undercurrent of big cities, with their greater crime rate, tackier tourism, crowded bars and general aroma of urine and rotting garbage (though Valencia competes quite well in the latter). So, while I may miss the greater cultural variety of the big city, I know I can always go there for a break, as I often do, but I prefer to live in a city where people have the time and space to pause and make friends.
