Autumn leaves start to fall and the hot summer becomes just a memory. As the clocks change, the days get shorter and the nights get longer. Being Valencia, however, you can still enjoy some glorious days of sunshine & blue skies that Northern Europeans would never experience in their homelands…in October. The latest news is that Spain is considering reverting back to Greenwich Mean Time as a way of making Spain more AngloSaxon in its working habits. It turns out that Franco changed the hour of Spain to that of Berlin back in the 1940s in sympathy for Hitler. Strangely enough, Castellon is on the same Meridian line as Greenwich…which may possibly explain why a number of friends & acquaintances have reported odd things occurring with the time whilst driving through the Castellon region! The weather is just one of the many reasons for why life is for ‘living’ in Spain, not just living to work. The Valencian Barrios of the Carmen, Ruzafa, Canovas and Benimaclet are full of bars, intercambio nights, live concerts and good restaurants where you can enjoy a night out for less than before. The crisis has actually fuelled more creativity in Valencia in terms of the variety of entertainment to choose from. 24/ 7 Valencia is recommended by the local, national and international

press. This includes The Times, The Guardian, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Lonely Planet, CNN.com, Business Traveller Magazine, Footprints, Aer Lingus, Thomas Cook, Levante EMV, El País and many more… Food lovers can enjoy a review of new Asian fusion restaurant ‘Kawayan’ and wine lovers can further explore vino from the region with a piece on ‘Valencia Wine’ by a true connoisseur, Ricki Wigley. Someone who truly loved Spain, like so many of us, was Ernest Hemingway and we have an exclusive piece about the legendary writer’s many stays in Valencia. Many thanks to all of our readers for all of your support over the years. It is really appreciated. See you next month! The fallen leaves that jewel the ground, They know the art of dying, And leave with joy their glad gold hearts In the scarlet shadows lying… I used to search for happiness, And I used to follow pleasure, But I found a door behind my mind And that's the greatest treasure. VALENCIA WINE

VALENCIA WINES An interview with Valencia wine connoisseur Riki Wigley Tell us something about the history of Valencia wines Valencia has been producing wines since 500 B.C. It is known that grapes came with the early Iberian people who settled in the peninsula from archaeological work done at Solana de las Pilillas, near to Requena, west of Valencia. You may think that Valencian wines would be well known around the world, especially given that the Romans exported them throughout their empire. Sadly, whilst those exports have continued into modern times, the wines of Valencia are still having to find their place in the market. Historically, Valencia has always been a bulk exporter of wines. The Islamic occupation also saw wines traded across the Mediterranean. Far from suppressing the wine trade, it was prolific throughout this period. In Georgian England, it was not just wines from Jerez which were imported. Two sweeter wines were sent in vast

amounts – ‘Alacant’, which today is known and produced in DO Alicante as Fondillón, and ‘Viña Carlón’, a wine from Benicarló in Castellón. This latter wine is being revived currently. When phylloxera devastated the vineyards of France, huge amounts of wine from the Region was sent to Bordeaux so that the top chateaux could continue to produce top clarets! Unfortunately, the exporting of wines in bulk has led directly to this anonymity of Valencian wines. The Swiss, French and Germans set up huge bodegas in Valencia’s port area and exported millions of litres annually to blend into wines in their home countries. It was not until a wholesale reorganization of the wine growing industry took place about 40 years ago that small bodegas were created and bottling of wine for local consumption started. By then, Rioja had a 200-year head start over Valencia! What is the current situation regarding Valencia wines? Today, the wine industry is organized by five governing bodies. Each of these is charged with maintaining the quality of wines being produced, the grapes which may be grown and the marketing of them.

Denominación de Origen Protegido (DOP) Alicante markets under the name Vinos Alicante. Similarly, wines from Requena are marketed as DOP Utiel-Requena and wines from Valencia as DOP Valencia. This latter DOP is split into five separate areas covering the higher reaches of the Turia Valley (Alto Turia). The swathe of towns from Casinos across to Chiva is known as the Valentino. Turís, Montroi and Godelleta produce the sweet muscatel wines known as mistela and the wines from the Vall d’Albaida to Font de la Figuera are known by the name of the local river, the Clariano. Castellón has a slightly lesser title of Indication of Geographical Protection (IGP), although the wines produced there are generally DO quality. Finally, 10 bodegas in Requena have the right to produce DO Cava wines. Not everyone who grows grapes makes wine. Inheritance laws mean many plots of land are in the hands of small-scale growers (cosecheros) who may well have other careers. Equally, not every bodega has its own vineyards and the owners (bodegueros) have to buy grapes from the cosecheros. Many of the bodegas, of course, do own their own vineyards and market their wines under the highest status a bodega in Spain can possess (Pago). This is broadly the equivalent of

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

Chateau status in France and indicates the wines are made from their own vineyards, processed in the bodega and bottled directly by them. This relationship is generally healthy, although the price paid for grapes had seen a steady decline until the last year or so. As a result, many old vineyards had been ripped up as the costs of production outweighed the value of the crop. Tell us about the wines in the current bodegas of the Comunidad Valenciana. Many of the best wines currently produced are difficult to find unless you can visit the bodega to buy directly or know who their distributor is. Some distributors, however, will only sell to restaurants and not to individuals. Fortunately, there is a good selection of Valencian wines in a number of stores now, but this does not include the general supermarket trade! The following is not an exhaustive list of sale points but generally you will find good Valencian wines in them. Las Añadas de España is a popular delicatessen opposite the North Station in central Valencia. They stock a wide range of wines from all five of the distinct regions in the Valencia Region and may well have the best range of wines from Castellón. El Corte Inglés and Hipercor have both a ‘Club de Gourmets’ and a good supermarket. In each of these you will find many Valencian wines at competitive prices and the range may vary from store to store as managers have autonomy over what and how much they stock. Of the independent wine shops Els Bodeguers, the best are Biosca in C/ Doctor Serrano near Ruzafa Market, Cabañal on Av. Blasco Ibáñez, Celler Bouquet near the Plaça Árbol and Navarro Bodeguero on Av. Cardenal Benlloch.

From Alicante, look out for wines from Finca Collado, Enrique Mendoza, Francisco Gómez, Xaló, Bocopa and Vins del Comtat. There are some fresh and tasty dry muscatel white wines, which go with seafood, and reds from Monastrell and Merlot grapes. In particular, the white from Finca Collado (muscatel/chardonnay) is excellent and various vintages have been recognized with awards. Bodegas with consistent wines from Castellón are Vicente Flors, Mas de Rander, Mayo García, Vinya Natur, Clos Déscarragordes, Masía de la Hoya and Besalduch y Valls. In Utiel-Requena it is almost impossible to buy a bad wine! Particularly good are wines from Chozas Carrascal, Vera de Estenas, Aranleón, Dominio de la Vega, Sierra Norte, Finca Ardal, Finca San Blas, Hispano-Suizas, Hijos de Ernesto Cárcel, Bodegas El Rebollar, Pago de Tharsys, Mustiguillo, Sebirán, UVÉ (Unión de Vinícola del Este), Vegalfaro and Vereda Real. From DO Valencia, look out for wines from Daniel Belda, Toni Arráez, Los Frailes, Los Pinos, Torrevellisca, Angosto, Heretat de Taverners, Celler del Roure, Vegamar, Enguera, Casa de las Vides, Rafael Cambra, and Pago Casa Gran. There are also a huge number of cooperatives producing good wines such as Anecoop, Covibex, and San Pedro Apóstol, and the giant producers – Murviedro, Gandía and El Villar – whose wines are widely available in supermarkets.

in L’Alcúdia, Utiel, Xativà (Játiva). In November, fairs will be held in Cullera and Castellón and the Valencian Cava fair will be held at the end of the month. There are also wine-tasting groups which you can join, catering for all from those who want to taste to a professional standard to those who just want to taste for fun! There is much more information on my website and I am happy to consider setting up new tasting groups or collaborate with others. There is a wealth of detailed information in my blog, http:// rikiwigley.wordpress.com/, and I can be contacted at riki.wigley@live.com if you would like to know more. Riki Wigley is an independent wine consultant living in the Vilamarxant area of the Valencia Region, liaising with exporters and bodegas. He also organizes regular tastings for the Pedralba Wine Club and, in collaboration with Valencia International, for Spanish professionals who need English in their business life. I also write occasional items for magazines, online and in print. Major effort goes into Ricardo’s Valencian Blog, offering information on wine and food events and news on Valencian gastronomy.

Where can you drink them? Increasingly, wine bars are springing up in Valencia, and these and many restaurants now have a wider appreciation of wines produced in Valencia. Alternatively, there are many wine and food fairs held during the year where you can taste the wines cheaply. In October alone, this will include fairs Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA MUSIC

FOLK-JAZZ-ARABE the timelessness and mystery of his music… “Rust in Peace” is the kind of rusty, waltzlike tune that a woozy band in a Fellini film might have played.

FOLK-JAZZ-ARABE It is said by renowned Spanish newspaper El País that Folk-Jazz-Arabe are one of the most original bands currently on the Valencia live scene. Formed in 2010, they have gigged all over the city in venues like Black Note, Café Mercedes Jazz, Festival Músicas del Mundo, Ubik Café, Café Cronopio, Spaghetti & Blues, Portland Ale House, Radio City, Festival de Naciones and many more. Composed of Moroccan multiinstrumentalist Abdel Louzari (oud, darbuka, ney, voice, violin), Portuguese jazz trumpeter Nuno Alves and British guitarist & composer Will McCarthy, this is a band whose diversity has attracted a growing number of fans from many walks of life… Take us through the tracks from your new Folk-Jazz-Arabe album, ‘From Ibiza to Berlin’ “Balansiya (reprise)” introduces the album and is sung in Arabic, accompanied by violin. Balansiya is the Arabic name for Valencia, which was ruled by the Moors for 500 years. “La Playa or The Beach” begins with sea sounds that then turn windy, which introduces the ney, an Arabic wind instrument, that segues into a darbuka and trumpet groove that later segues into a bossa nova-style number. From the Mediterranean to the shores of Brazil in one song. “Arthur Lee” is about Love’s enigmatic leader, Arthur Lee, who remains one of music’s most underrated composers. This is a homage to him that combines elements of dark flamenco, classical, jazz, soul, blues, funk and his distinctive time changes, mood changes, stoned humour, reclusiveness, and Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

“Syd Barrett” starts off with a Victorian music box reminiscent of his happy childhood and then segues into the sounds of nature that anyone who has visited Cambridge will be familiar with. Bike bells, King’s College choir then Syd’s love of jazz and blues, a melancholy section, a trippy fairground, then a nightmarish section and finally peace with a Cambridge choir, cows and church bells as the outro. Both of Syd Barrett’s former girlfriends, Jenny Spires and Libby Gausden, got in touch via Facebook to say how much they liked the song and video. Jenny even wrote a 500-word e-mail to us about it! “Torre” is a snaky groove that combines Arabic percussion and chant with a jazzy trumpet. Miles Davis in Marrakech? “Eivissa” begins with a sea recording off the coast of Ibiza (with Café del Mar’s ambient sounds humming distantly in the background). It then segues into an Arabic percussion workout. The Arabs conquered Ibiza and, hundreds of years later, the percussion is also reminiscent of the hippies of Ibiza who drum in groups as the sun sets. The song segues into acoustic chill-out sections, jazzier parts, a flamenco solea and ends on a high with a joyous, intense and festive outro. “Berlin” begins with the oud, which represents the strong Turkish influence of the German city. It then goes back into the past for a more decadent, ‘20s-‘30s cabarettype feel and the underlying menace of what was to come. It returns to a 07.00 am ‘coming down after partying all night’, 21st-century fragmented folk vibe and then ups the ante with a punchier, jazzier outro section. “Space & Time” is an atmospheric track. Plenty of time changes on this one! “La Valenciana” is a homage to the women of Valencia. It’s a city that can be both intense yet carefree at the same time. An enigma… Tell us about your soundtrack work… Seven songs by Folk-Jazz-Arabe form a major part of soundtrack that we were commissioned to write for a documentary

by a Valencia production company called Volya. The documentary is called ‘Sobre el Cielo de Azerbaiyán’ and is the true story of how, during the Second World War, exiled Spanish Republican pilots with Spanish Civil War experience were asked to fly to Azerbaijan to train Soviets pilots in record time. The war was on so time was of the essence. Azerbaijan produced 70% of the Soviet Union’s oil and Hitler knew that if he captured Azerbaijan’s oil, he would probably win the war. Even before the outbreak of war, British and French intelligence was aware of the importance of Azerbaijan’s oil supply and had even considered destroying it to thwart a potential Nazi victory…even Stalin considered it as the war went on! The Nazis invaded Azerbaijan but were defeated by the bravery and skill of the experienced Spanish and Soviet pilots combined. In the documentary, one of the elderly Spanish pilots, well into his 90s, is interviewed and he recounts personally shooting down 30 Nazi planes. The documentary was premiered this summer at the MuVIM in Valencia with the Madridbased ambassador of Azerbaijan presenting the film as part of a new relationship between Spain and Azerbaijan regarding growing cultural, commerce and tourism links. Azerbaijan is now an independent state and is 80% Muslim. We are told that the Arabic, Spanish and instrumental elements of our music fitted well with the story. The documentary is going to be aired on national television in Spain (Televisión Española) as well as in Azerbaijan and other countries. Could you tell us about your side project Folk-Jazz-Arabe, ‘Syria’? We have written and recorded a charity album, ‘Syria’, which consists of nine originally composed songs concerned with the country. There are no jazz elements on this album; it’s more a fusion of Arabic and folk using traditional, acoustic instruments. Given the subject matter, it’s quite dark but ends on a note of hope. It’s a charity record where all proceeds will go to Médicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors Without Borders). You can hear it for free on our website and on YouTube, too. FOOD

Quinoa pancakes By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Although October has started with the usual Valencia sunshine and heat, it is easy to forget that that dank character of Autumn is knocking at the door. For, according to Chinese medicine, autumn is the time to protect the lungs from increased risk of infection, particularly in areas of high humidity. Acupuncturist Olga Fedina (who will also be visiting La Ola Fresca this month to talk about her book “What Every Russian Knows and You Don’t”) advises: “We are now entering autumn, which in Chinese medicine corresponds to the metal element and lung organ. The colour of the metal element is white, and its flavour is pungent. So, to tonify your lungs and ensure smooth transition into autumn, you should include radishes, particularly daikon and horseradish, onion, garlic, tofu, pears and mustard in your diet, among other things. Rather like the marketing of Ready Brek in the 1970s, we’re looking for foods to give you a warm protective glow and seeing as I’m a girl who finds it hard to cut out the spice, I’m more than happy to follow the Chinese diet for autumn. When I lived in London, some of my favourite places to eat were the South Indian restaurants around Camden where they served delicious crispy, almost coneshaped pancakes called dosas with a spicy mashed potato dish, vegetables and coconut relish. Since then I have tried to master the dosa – which involved hours of fermenting different types of dahls (lentils) in airing cupboards, pulverising them, then fermenting again and finally cooking them on a frying pan – and not coming up with anything that resembled these pancakes. So, we’re not going to attempt that but instead create a dosa-like effect by using ground cooked quinoa and cumin seeds and serve it with spicy vegetables, tofu, mashed potato and coconut chutney. Fry the onions till lightly golden. Add red pepper, followed by the ginger, garlic and spices and continue to fry gently. Add the pumpkin and aubergine and allow to cook on gentle heat for 30 mins, stirring from time to time. Add the chopped courgettte, cook for

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

KAWAYAN Regular readers to this restaurant column may have noticed there was a guest writer last month reviewing Yuso in the Barrio del Carmen. I was experiencing Spain’s hospital system for a very unexpected and painful visit of a week, the first few days of which I was on a drip and ‘nil-by-mouth’ so I couldn’t even review the food! I am glad to say that I am wholly recovered and was able to take up the reins again for this month’s Fillipino fusion restaurant, Kawayan, close to the Mercado Central. This small restaurant, which can serve 25 inside, has a terrace of two tables (soon to be four) just a little way up the road – interesting for the servers, I would think, as they have no view of the terrace from the restaurant. It was a hot night in Valencia so we elected to sit on the terrace and started off with a bottle of ‘Cueva by Mariano’, a fruity red from Utiel-Requena and good value at 12€ a bottle. Our waiter Charlie told us that the owner, Vida, and he thought the best way to proceed was for us to choose our main dishes and they would choose the tapas. We started with a hummus made in an interesting and novel way with the usual chick peas but pumpkin in place of the sesame paste – very tasty and served with small toasts. Next came traditional Thai spring rolls and ‘fusion’ croquetas, accompanied by two dipping sauces – soy & lemon and a sweet chilli sauce. Next came the first of the Fillipino specialities, Tortang-Talong, delicious crispy chicken with a tasty gravy. By

now we were pretty full but next came a Filipina tortilla with a soy & lemon sauce. Not a tortilla as we know it, but an aubergine roasted and flattened and dipped in fine tempura-style batter, fried and super delicious – almost a meal in itself! For our main courses, Charlie recommended and we chose the Adobo, the national dish, chicken slowly cooked in a soy, vinegar, garlic and pepper sauce. Really juicy, tender and delicious. We were told that this is the equivalent of paella in the Philippines! The other dish was crispy coated chicken pieces with a sweet, spicy and salty sauce, really good. As we neared the end of our meal, Vida, the owner/chef, came and joined us and told us a little about herself and the restaurant. She has lived in Spain for some years with her Spanish husband and has worked in various kitchens in Valencia including the Ginger Loft and Las Arenas Hotel. This is her first venture in her own restaurant and her vision is to serve great fusion food to Valencia – we wish her great success, as it is great food, well-presented and there’s a really nice ambience to the restaurant. The service is great, too.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, Kawayan is open for dinner at 19.30h to catch early eaters, a very clever move, I think. A menú del día is on offer weekdays at lunch for 10€ including drink, very reasonable for a great meal out. Tapas are 3.50€ – 6€ and main courses are around 7 – 8€. Wines are well-priced and they have a good selection. All the interesting desserts are from 3.50€ – 4.50€ and include such delights as Photos © D. Birch / Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

MULTI-BAR OF THE MONTH

LA BONA ESTRELLA La Bona Estrella celebrates its first anniversary this month of October! It’s a family-run multi-bar with a very ample interior, a wonderful terraza and it is situated in the heart of the old centre, so easy to find. You can try some of the best beer in town, recently made by the master brewers Estrella de Galicia. In a matter of hours, the fresh beer is delivered and deposited in the giant tanks that you will find as you enter La Bona Estrella. So, it’s beer straight from the source and right into your pint, something for the palate to truly savour. Fantastic! Their carta also has an ample selection of well-known Spanish wines and homemade beers from the region. This multi-bar opens every morning and you can enjoy breakfast, almuerzo, an aperitivo and a daily lunch menu, which includes two dishes to choose from for just 10€. sauce, steak with mushrooms, braised vegetables and a wonderful selection of Spanish hams and meats & homemade cheeses. You can choose your own giant tostada and add the ingredients you want! There is a busy programme of activities going on here. Monday evenings have the English – Spanish / Spanish – English intercambio with native North Americans and are open to all. There’s lots of televised football with Liga and Champions League matches and there’s wine and beer tasting evenings, too. There’s a Wi-Fi section, a games area, lively jam sessions and the best acoustic gigs, always with free entry. See their Facebook for up-to-the-minute info regarding their live music dates. Enjoy their monthly art exhibitions, which often feature local artists. At any hour, you can savour a coffee from their Nespresso cafeteria including magnificent choco-crème, latte and

cappuccino . To finish off the day, why not enjoy a cocktail of their famous Agua de Valencia, a spectacular Negroni, a triumphant mojito, or one of their many spirits…given that La Bona Estrella has a wide selection of gins, vodkas and premium tonic waters. All in all, La Bona Estrella has become an essential part of the Valencia scene, both night and day. Just a stone’s throw from Plaza de la Virgen. Check it out... CHEERS! Space for an ending When you hope for such beauty You hold everything Fleetingly, completely. The absence of hope, An ending sensed and acted Left me space once again To look at an open sky. Because it wasn’t love Which abandoned me, But being hopeless on The precipice of that Vacuum was like vertigo, The land wouldn’t hold. It was too late by then. On New Year’s the sky Was navy blue, the sea A syrupy reflection. The symbolic new May even have been enough But you showed me more. In the glare of fireworks, Quiet of morning waters, Our teeth and hands laid Bare in your bed, those days, Like the expectant countdown Ten gave way to one, Before the first sun rose We had filled ourselves. At La Pepica in Valencia

The writer

Hemingway in Spain

A FEW DANGEROUS SUMMERS: HEMINGWAY IN VALENCIA The original guiri loco, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ernest Hemingway, described Spain as “the last good country left”. His highly romantic and unapologetically hedonistic template for enjoying the country has inspired generations of TEFL teachers and Erasmus students to come over, immerse themselves in the culture, live the life and get uncontrollably and steaming drunk. Hemingway is most closely associated with the cities of Pamplona and Madrid but he also had strong, lifelong links with Valencia. He visited here on numerous occasions, especially in the month of July for the bullfights taking place during the Feria de San Jaime (it is said he attended the Feria on 15 separate occasions), nearly always staying for months on end. Valencia appears often in his work; the city is referred to, one way or another, in seven of his novels, including “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Death in the Afternoon”. As a young, largely unknown writer, he first came here in 1925, arriving by train straight from the Sanfermines festival in Pamplona. The festival was over up in Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

Navarra but Hemingway wanted to carry on the party so he followed his favourite bullfighter Cayetano Ordóñez (with whom he would become great friends) down to Valencia. Arriving at the Estación del Norte, he immediately fell in love with the city. If the station’s colourful ceramic tiles and Modernist architecture impressed him, what really swung it was the huge bullring, which was the first thing he saw as he came out onto the street. In a letter which he sent during this visit to his friend Waldo Pierce, he told him how much he was enjoying Valencia and also expressed some strange ideas about Valencian eating habits: “In Valencia, it’s dammed stupendous at the beach or in the city to eat a melon washed down with a real cold jug of beer.” I must try that some time. The first place he stayed in the city was the Hotel Reina Victoria in C/ de las Barcas and it was on the balcony of his room in this hotel where he started writing his first novel “The Sun Also Rises”. Years later, he would tell how he spent those days in Valencia writing during the morning in bed, then having a late

breakfast and continuing writing until the time for the start of the bullfights. In the evening, he’d go down to Malvarrosa for a swim. Hemingway finished this first book in Valencia – “I’ve got 60,000 words”, he told his father in a telegram he sent from the grand central Post Office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. In the following years he would return many times, more often than not staying at the Hotel Inglés in front of the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas in C/ Poeta Querol. He took his first wife Hadley there on his second visit in the fall of 1925 and later, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War in 1937, it also became his favourite place to take his then lover, the renowned war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, who later became his third wife. Gellhorn had agreed to go to Spain with Hemingway to report on the Civil War. She worked for Collier’s Weekly while he wrote for the North American Newspaper Alliance. During the war, Valencia was the capital of the Republic. Hemingway reported on and photographed the bombing raids on the city carried out by the Nacionales. When visiting wartime Valencia, he and Martha would head each day to the Foreign Ministry to get passes to the

front or to send their articles. This being Hemingway, he would usually stop for a few drinks in one of his favourite bars at the time, the Alianza de Intelectuales cafeteria located in the basement of the Ministry. This once-famous bar was in the building that now houses the Hotel Vincci Palace in C/ de la Paz and there is a plaque on the wall in remembrance of the anti-fascist intellectuals who met there. Despite the air raids, Valencia was relatively far from the front compared to some other cities for most of the war. Being the capital of the Republic, it was full of politicians, soldiers, artists, foreign diplomats, intellectuals, spies, refugees and war correspondents coming from all over Europe and the rest of the world. People living fast and not knowing what was around the corner, all of which fermented a very active and interesting nightlife in the city, a great attraction for the writer. One of the standout bars, which were symbolic of this time, was the Café Ideal Room in C/ de la Paz on the corner with C/ de las Comedias. These days, it is a ladies’ underwear shop but it still has its beautiful Modernist windows and its 1920s stucco decoration inside. Here Hemingway would discuss art, politics, the war and whatever else with his friend, the writer John Dos Passos, along with other regulars like Francisco Ayala, W.H. Auden, Octavio Paz and Antonio Machado. Further up C/ de la Paz was another favourite ‘intellectuals’ haunt, the Café del Siglo, which also no longer

exists but whose name you can still see on the façade of the building above a shop entrance, just before the corner with the Plaza de la Reina. Hemingway loved to go to these bars but possibly his favourite place in Valencia (after the bullring) was the Restaurante La Pepica at Playa de las Arenas. It is still there now, a somewhat pricier option amongst the numerous paella restaurants along the beachfront. It still preserves some of the atmosphere and style of old and there are, of course, a number of photos of the writer sitting at its tables. The restaurant gets a mention in his book “The Dangerous Summer”: “Dinner at Pepica’s was wonderful. It was a big, clean, open-air place and everything was cooked in plain sight. You could pick out what you wanted to have grilled or broiled and the seafood and the Valencian rice dishes were the best on the beach. You could hear the sea breaking on the beach and the lights shone on the wet sand.” When the war ended in 1939 with Franco victorious, Hemingway swore he would never return to Spain under a dictatorship. He did, however, return in 1953 – older, more taciturn and starting to show the effects of the years of drinking. He was now a celebrity who was referred to by everyone as “Don Ernesto”. Too celebrated and too famous to be ignored, he was humoured by the regime he had railed against. He still had a few wild days left, though. He was even thrown out of the Hotel Metropol on C/ Játiva. So the story

At the bullring

goes… he decided to take some shooting practice from his hotel window trying to light the cigar that his friend and fellow bullfight fan, Orson Welles, was holding in his mouth in the street below opposite the bullring. A few years ago, 24/ 7 Valencia interviewed British writer and long-term Valencia resident Christopher Wright, who knew one of Hemingway’s tearaway friends in Valencia: “Reggie Bowler was another character and wonderful raconteur. He knew author Ernest Hemingway, both in Africa and Valencia. In fact, they were both banned from what was the Hotel Metropol in front of the bullring. Continuing the fiesta which had started at the Pepica restaurant on the beach, they squirted the hotel customers, including the mayor, with gin-filled water pistols.” The last time Hemingway came to Valencia was in 1959, he stayed at the Hotel Royal, which was on the corner of C/ de las Barcas and C/ Pascual y Genis. The famous Alicante photographer Paco Cano, who specialized in bullfights and bullfighters, photographed him there. The photograph is exhibited in Valencia’s Museo Taurino, the big man standing tall with bushy white beard next to the bullfighter Antonio Ordóñez, the son of his great friend Cayetano, the man who had first brought him to Valencia nearly thirty-five years earlier.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

PRESSURE RELIEVED ON DJUKIC Despite a wretched start to September that peaked with fans demonstrating outside Mestalla after the Europa League defeat with Swansea, Valencia Football Club have put together a string of positive results that leaves them currently standing just four points off a Champions League spot in La Liga. On the first day of the month, Valencia were beaten at home 3-2 by Barcelona and the magic of Messi, who completed a hat trick inside the first 41 minutes. With an international hiatus the following weekend, the Valencia manager Djukic took his team to play his old club in the XL Trofeo Ciudad de Valladolid. It turned out to be a worthwhile exercise as confidence was restored with a comfortable 4-2 victory, Jonas and Paco Alcácer each netting a brace. League action next came with a trip to Sevilla and a tricky away fixture against Betis. It had not been the best of starts for the Andalusians, but they got their first three points of the season thanks to two goals from Salva and a clever finish from Jorge Molina. A consolation goal late on from Ricardo Costa did little to appease the travelling fans and the nature of the defeat was just as painful as the final score itself.

Terrible defending gifted two of the Betis goals and Valencia’s lack of cohesive play throughout the match left the supporters mumbling discontentedly. Things came to a head in the Europa League game with Swansea. Having been paired with the Welsh outfit and St Gallen and Kuban Krasnodar in the group stages, this looked the most difficult match-up on paper. So it proved as the Swans enjoyed an historic European night and humbled their Spanish counterparts on foreign soil by an emphatic 3-0 margin. For Valencia there were no positives. Down to 10 men early in the first half when Rami was sent off for a professional foul on Bony, the home side did not produce a single worthwhile effort as Swansea went into the break a goal to the good. For the supporters in the Curva Nord, the accumulation of a bunch of insipid performances was too much. All the fans from that part of the stadium were ushered out by the ultra leaders and Valencia came back on to the pitch for the second half to the eerie vision of no fans behind the goal Guaita was defending. The ultras kept up their protest for 10 minutes before spilling back onto the terrace to fill the empty spaces. However, this show of frustration did little to improve the team’s showing and they trudged off the pitch at full time a well-beaten side. After the match, hundreds of fans vented their frustration at the limp performance by demonstrating outside the ground.

Going into the next home game, many pundits felt Djukic had just one game to turn things around. Sevilla were the visitors and the game was given additional spice with the former manager of Valencia, Unai Emery, returning to his old stomping ground. Emery had divided opinion during his time with the club. Many did not like his unorthodox tactical decisions and the defensive approach adopted once Valencia were winning games. Others felt he performed minor miracles in sustaining Champions League football, whilst having to sell his best players year after year. With Sevilla bottom of the league coming into the match, he was feeling the pressure, too, after just four games. The match hung in the balance until well into the second half. Jonas opened the scoring on 11 minutes but the home side were pegged back on 55 minutes when former PSG striker Kévin Gameiro, a player who Valencia had been linked with during the summer, equalised. The same player was then inexplicably substituted in a decision that was difficult to understand on the hour mark. With Sevilla now seemingly looking to see out the last half hour with a more defensive approach, Valencia became more dominant and secured victory with two late goals from Jonas and Víctor Ruiz. The Valencia fans and Djukic alike were relieved to gain the three points and put the horror show against Swansea behind them. Another trip to Andulucía beckoned as Valencia went to Estadio Neuvo Los Cármenes next to take on newly promoted Granada.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

Valencia headed into the game on the back of a club suspension for Rami, after he had criticised Djukic and his teammates in public. It is obvious that there is no love lost between the French international and the Serbian manager and at this moment in time, it looks like the defender could have played his last game for the club. On the pitch the match seemed to be heading for a goalless stalemate until Jonas popped up in injury time to bundle the ball over the line with his knee after good work from Banega and Canales. The Brazilian then continued his current rich vein of goal-scoring form by netting the only goal in the home encounter with Rayo Vallecano to give his team their third consecutive league victory. The Russian outpost of Krasnodar was the next assignment for the club. Valencia put in a clinical performance to secure their first Europa League points thanks to goals from Paco Alcácer and Sofiane Feghouli. Valencia started October by stretching

their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, coming away from their first visit to the new San Mamés stadium with a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao. Banega opened the scoring with a welltaken penalty but Bilbao clawed the Chés back, late in the game, when the former Valencia player Aduriz met a cross at the back post and headed it across goal for fellow substitute Toquero to head home from two yards out. Across the city, things have been a little calmer at Levante during September. Unbeaten during the month, they have had away victories at Vallecano and Osasuna and they also picked up a point on the road at Almería. Their home form was less impressive with draws against Real Sociedad and Valladolid but signs of just how far Caparrós has improved his team since the dreadful show at Barcelona on the opening game of the season was plain for all to see in the encounter with Real Madrid. Twice leading through Babacar Diawara and former Liverpool man Nabil El Zhar, Levante fans were smelling victory only to have the game snatched away from them

with a late equalizing goal from Morata, and then a wickedly deflected Ronaldo shot with virtually the last kick of the match. With both clubs showing much improved form, October bodes well for both Valencia and Levante. Tickets for home games can be obtained from the club shops and information on forthcoming games can be found on their respective websites: www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com John Howden See listings page 30 for football calendar

CLUBLAND WHAT’S UP, MUSIC LOVERS? Well, finally September has come to an end and so far October has been hotter than June!! You’ve gotta love Valencia;). One by one the terrace clubs are slowly closing, and the ‘winter’ clubs are all starting their new campaigns to get those paying customers through their doors. This summer has been great but, to tell you the truth, I’ve been looking forward to the city filling up again and a bit more life in the streets around town. As per usual the students have arrived first, filling up the bars and pubs around the Blasco Ibáñez area. When I say the Blasco Ibáñez area, I mean Plaza del Cedro, Plaza de Xúquer, Plaza de Honduras and C/ Polo y Peyrolón. These areas are historically famous in Valencia for good fun, cheap drinks, lots of bad decisions and terrible potential hangovers;). Some popular places to check out are; Cafe Net (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 113). This is a lively student bar with lots of people enjoying their cañas and pipas, whilst playing some sort of card or board game with their friends. Café Infinito (C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 35). This bar/restaurant has lots of things to offer during the whole week, such as quiz nights, live music and even some theatre if you’re lucky. It has a really tasty menu, and for all you non-meat eaters out there, their vegetarian options are fantastic!! Frankie Walsh is one of the three hard-working, bilingual owners there and tries to constantly keep the bar upto-date with great music from all around the world;). Bcool Urban Club (C/ Polo y Peyrolón, 11). This is a NEW BAR that has just been bought by a friend of mine and he’s done it up quite nice indeed, if I don’t say so myself. He’s been managing bars and clubs for years and has decided to take the plunge this year and go ‘ALL IN’ and give us all another option for somewhere to go out in this area of town. As currently there are not many places for the students to go out on Mondays (like they don’t have enough other days to go out on!), he has decided to launch Manic Mondays for the Erasmus students, with really cheap drinks and international bop - along - to music;). On the weekends they are going for a ‘house’ crowd as Luis works with Mist Nightclub (El

24/7 VALENCIA Puerto) as well, and knows a lot of people in that scene. If you’re in that area, drop in and check it out, I´m sure it’s going to be a success as his track record is pretty good. In my opinion, every month the Benimaclet area of the city is getting busier and busier and busier!!!! I think this is due to many factors. First, it is a very well commuted part of Valencia with buses, trams and a metro station in the heart of where all the night life is. Second, the atmosphere is really bohemian and relaxed with so much youth and positivity that it has to ooze out on to the terraces, which makes it even better because you can see all different types of people having fun even if you’re just walking through the streets;). Third, it is by far the cheapest area of town to go out in, with pints of beer for ONLY 1€ and glasses of wine for the same!!! Great places to eat for under a tenner and generally really nice and interesting people. If you could compare it to anywhere in London I would compare it to Camden Town ....wait a minute, what am I saying?... sorry, you can’t compare it to Camden Town at all. But what I can say is that the kind of people you see there wouldn’t look out of place in Camden, referring to their attitude towards the way they live their lives, fashion, haircuts, et c… Bar Pulso (C/ Leonor Jovani, 6) is a great little bar there with lots of cool memorabilia on the walls and regular live jam sessions. Sebas is the owner of the bar and he is an Argentinian with an open mind and great customer service. The kind of people who go there are very friendly and all share a common love for great music of all genres. Definitely a must-visit bar if you’re in the area, but be careful, you might not leave;). Check out the Benimaclet Entra Facebook site for daily updates on activities in the area! Last but not least, the old nightclub Excuse Me? in the trendy Ruzafa district has opened up again, but this time it’s called CHAPEAU (C/ dels Tomasos, 14) and is very near Ruzafa Market. It has been renovated and changed its owners but, most importantly, it’s changed its music policy. It has three rooms with completely different styles of music. The room as you walk in to the club is your typically Spanish anything goes room, very chatty and what us Brits would say “really cheesy” but hey,

who can say they don’t enjoy a bit of cheese from time to time? I can’t;). The second room is a room dedicated to smokers. Yes, you heard me right, you are allowed to smoke inside this room and won’t get a nasty fine. So for all you smokers out there, it’s like heaven but for all you non-smokers it’s gonna be like hell, because in my opinion it’s the room which plays the best music – ‘70s and ‘80s classics, really good for dancing;). The downstairs room has been decorated like a 1920s burlesque house from Paris, or at least that’s what I imagined them to be like in my head. Very dark blue and red lighting, with lots of seating areas and booths around the outskirts of the room. It has a Saturday Night Fever-esque dance floor smack bang in the middle of it, with two bars at either end for easy access. They’ve decided to make this a house music room and are promising to bring in good DJs on a regular basis...we will see, let’s hope so;). Ok guys, for more updates on top nights out keep reading this space as next month there are lots more fixed dates and events to pencil in your social calendar. Also, don’t hesitate to give me a call if you wanna get in for free, or with a discount, not have to queue, get bottles in V.I.P lounges or have any group parties, I can sort all that kind of stuff out with the dial of a few numbers;). KEEP ON KEEPING IT REAL PEOPLE AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO L.T.D (LIVE THE DREAM) John Treacy Tel: 647 585 494 P.R. DJ ENGLISH TEACHER DREAM LIVER;)

After a year there, I decided to regroup with my family who was living in Toronto, Canada at the time. While I was there, I worked for an online magazine called TORO recording popular bands in the indie scene (Who’s Army and the Bahamas among others). While concentrating on recording, I wanted to go back to drums, which led me to choosing Berklee Valencia for my Master’s in Contemporary Studio Performance.

background,

I was born in Mexico City but I grew up and was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I began playing the drums at the age of 14 with a classical percussionist and when I was 18, I began to really fall in love with the instrument. I started to listen to drummers who did the unconventional with the instrument, people like Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Stewart Copeland and Neil Peart. I was able to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I studied not only drums but audio engineering as well. I was taught by musicians like Mike Mangini (Dream Theater, Steve Vai), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), and Mark Walker (Oregon, Paquito D’Rivera) and amazing engineers like Jeff Largent (Braveheart) and Prince Charles Alexander (Puff Daddy). During my time there I worked on several different projects including recording music for a Hungarian short film called ‘Whatever Floats Your Boat’, playing in a DJ / live instrument band called Global Party People, and recording drums for Félix Martin’s (Prosthetic Records) debut album ‘Bizarre Rejection’. After I graduated from Berklee, I moved to Los Angeles where I managed to work with amazing engineers and in great studios like WaterSound with Carlos Castro (Luis Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

How did you find living in Valencia compared to your own country? Living in Valencia was great during the time I was doing my master’s. The culture reminds me somewhat of the culture back home in Buenos Aires. People are friendly and they are always willing to hang out. People are nice to foreigners for the most part so that was also a nice feeling. There are many things to do regardless of the small size of the city. There are numerous bars and the greatest attraction to the city: the beach. Unlike most other places I’ve lived, Valencia also has a very slow feel to it. People take their time for everything and no one seems to ever be in a hurry. And because of its size compared to other cities I’ve lived, the music industry in Valencia also seems very small. Most places would rather have a DJ or a small acoustic set which makes it difficult sometimes for a drummer to work. However there are many great places for live music like Jimmy Glass, Café Mercedes Jazz, Bigornia, and Café Murnau Pub. What is Berklee Valencia? Berklee Valencia is a fantastic opportunity for people to develop new levels of musicianship. It is as a melting pot of musical cultures and a fantastic place to study. Unlike its counterpart in Boston, the Valencia campus’ small student body allows for much more interaction with musical cultures and ideals. In Boston it is very easy to lose yourself in one specific style without ever having to really dive into nothing else. Here you are somewhat forced to learn. The college not only has an impressive and well-qualified team of faculty assisting the students, but one of the greatest resources in this small student group is the students themselves. You can easily find the wisdom of different folkloric music throughout the world, different elements of composition and

orchestration, and even different views of the music you thought you knew. Programs are intense and meant to test you and push you to your limits. The facilities in the college are also top of the line. From a state-ofthe-art scoring stage to multiple small studios, technology labs, practice rooms, and teaching facilities, it gives students access to things they would normally not be exposed to. There are great opportunities within the program. My thesis focused on the combination of Argentine folkloric music with jazz, and through that I developed different arrangements and compositions based on tango, chacarera, and zamba (soundcloud. com/rodrigomalvido). Besides my project I was also able to record for several different film scoring students, different performance students, and even faculty and professional composers such as Laura Karpman. Through Laura, I was invited to record drums and orchestral percussion for a Lifetime movie called ‘Left to Die’ and the main theme for Microsoft’s ‘Imagine Cup’ competition. Throughout my master’s, I was also able to perform and learn with Mariano Steimberg, Daniela Schachter, Alain Pérez, Victor Mendoza, and more. Even now the evolution of the master’s program is evident in the new group of talented students that are already making a name for themselves in the new music scene. Describe a typical week at Berklee. Describing a typical week is hard since the amount of projects one is usually involved in changes regularly. While I was working on my master’s, every week always consisted of at least private instruction, two ensemble classes, theory classes, and a business or production class. But regularly I was engaged in different rehearsals, studio recordings and mixings, musical exchanges between different students, and hours upon hours of practicing. I took my time at Berklee seriously so I tried to practice as much as I could beyond all the other things I was involved in. It was an absolute great experience and I would recommend it for anyone wishing to achieve a high proficiency level in the musical arts. Rodrigo Malvido www.rodrigomalvido.com Interview by Owl

COMMENT

The Club Many years ago when I worked at Valencia’s Trade Fair, I came across one of those bizarre aspects of Spain that nobody mentions but which everybody knows, like a Spanish family secret. No; I’m not talking about the pervasive nepotism and corruption, mainly because my readers are no doubt tired of hearing about it, but also because the Spanish are indeed beginning to talk about it, albeit along the polarised political lines of “the others are worse than us”, thus bringing down the reputation of the entire political caste. But no; I’m actually referring to those huge neon signs one sees on the motorway roadside, beside motels, industrial estates and at the entrance to small towns from Cádiz to Catalonia, announcing “Club”. These are not to be confused with the typical English meaning of club (i.e. a nightclub, a place to go after the pub, which could possibly be translated into Spanish via another English word used with this meaning, El After.) No, these are not your average nightclub; everybody in Spain knows these are puti-clubs (“whorehouses”). But back to the trade fair. Whenever there was actually an event being held at the fair, there would be dozens of pretty young ladies outside the entrance, employed as hostesses to guide the visitors and help them with any queries about the organisation. However, surreptitiously mingling with these hostesses, one often found other young ladies unrelated to the fair but with shorter skirts and tighter clothing, handing out what looked like business cards. And what was their business? You guessed it: prostitution. I would come back to my car to find several such cards tucked into my vehicle’s window seals and behind the wipers, another common phenomenon to be

found all over Spain if you leave your car overnight near areas with nightlife. On the back of the cards there is usually a map so that everybody knows where the brothel is, including the authorities, presumably. In fact, a female friend once showed this fact to the officers at her local police station, to which the officer on duty shrugged and replied that it was Zapatero’s fault, thereby reinforcing the stereotype of indolent right-wing Spanish cops. As everybody also knows, trade fairs are a great place for companies to find new clients from all over the world and hopefully get them to sign a new, succulent contract. One way to do this is to have a great-looking stand and talented salespeople, as well as a good product to sell. Another is to make sure your potential client is satisfied with their visit and hopefully wants to return to your company again in future. This is why trade fairs and congresses are such fun, with the participants going out to do business over a few drinks and great meals, as well as seeing the local sights. Perhaps, then, it is no surprise to see these huge neon signs alongside industrial estates, where one would otherwise imagine they would have less potential clientele at night.

Or perhaps they are located there to be out of sight, out of mind? I doubt it. As I mentioned above, they are also to be found at the entrance to towns and villages. Last summer, I went with a friend to a well-known local recreational area beside a river, where thousands go on a banking weekend with the family to dip their toes in the fresh water. This area is at one end of town, farthest from the main motorway. On arrival here from the other end of town, at the entrance from the motorway, stands one of the town’s biggest buildings, announcing in gigantic neon lettering: Club. Hardly out of sight, out of mind. The town’s

priest, children, police and politicians must all surely be aware of this brothel’s existence. Until a few years ago, it was also common to see three or four pages of classified ads in the ‘quality’ press dedicated almost exclusively and rather explicitly to sexual services. Few even bothered to use the usual euphemism of club de alterne. One could argue that it is better to be open about the oldest, most lucrative profession in the world instead of accepting the dangerous, seedy underworld of the kerb-crawlers in dodgy parts of town. However, this also exists in Spain, the unfortunate ladies usually being poor Eastern Europeans or black Africans. But the strange thing is, people don’t talk about it, even though the puti club may be the largest, most noticeable building in town. It is very much in sight, yet still out of mind. These clubs all over Spain with their gaudy signs are perhaps the clearest example of the way many people simply turn a blind eye to the law and social injustice, and carry on with their daily lives blissfully ignoring illegal or unethical behaviour in front of their very eyes. There have even been cases such as the former mayor of a small town near Elche who was caught using his municipal Visa card (i.e. public money) to pay bills amounting to 600 euros in the early hours at such a club. Or one of many offensive quotes by the ‘colourful’ president of the province of Valencia, anticipating election victory with “champagne and women”. One wonders just how much business and what kind of business, public and private, gets done in such places amid such people as those who run them.
