CANAL 9 On 27 November this year, despite lastminute pleas and hopes for some sort of settlement, the PP-controlled (the Conservative Partido Popular) Valencian regional parliament voted to close down Canal 9. This was after years of turmoil in the publicly owned Valencia TV channel and its parent organisation RTVV, complete with on – air protests, workers being sacked and then reinstated, tales of bloated excesses, gross mismanagement and falling viewing figures. It wasn’t meant to be like this. Canal 9 was heralded on its inauguration in 1989 as the channel for and by all Valencians. The name was a play on words in the Valencian language. The number 9, so associated with the region because of 9 October, Valencia’s regional day celebrating the conquest of Valencia by King Jaime I, and the pronunciation of the number in Valencian, “Nou” which also means “new”. Broadcasting started on, of course, the 9th of October that year. This was towards the end of the period of Spain’s transition to democracy. The new, wide-eyed and innocent political class (who eventually became the hackneyed corrupt lot we have today) were on a wave of euphoria. They were ready to tear down the centralist structures of the recently dispatched dictatorship and give a meaningful and decisive role to each of Spain’s regional autonomies. This was backed by a society thrilled with dreams, new projects and plans,

and hopeful anticipation of how the new democracy would be. There was no room for cynicism. Anything was possible. In the midst of all this, Canal 9 was born. In the spirit of the times it was seen as the perfect vehicle for enhancing and standardising the role of the Valencian language, which during the Franco period had been relegated to casual and informal use amongst friends and families, with the hope of making it the principal language of media and communication in the region. It also had the equally important objective of bringing back a shared cultural unity for the region, which historically had been united for centuries under the ‘Kingdom of Valencia’ and was starting to claw back its identity after years of dictatorship. Canal 9 has its critics but you have to say it has helped to achieve these objectives to a certain extent. It has made a contribution to bringing together the people of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia and promote the idea of a Valencian identity. It has reported on and promoted local festivals like the Fogueres de San Joan in Alicante, the Magdalena in Castellón, the Misteri in Elche or the Fallas in Valencia and has produced numerous documentary programmes bringing the history, people and landscapes of Valencia to our screens. For many people, it has also been the main source of exposure to the Valencian language, increasing its profile and its credibility. And at least it gave us a rest from the domination of the tiresome ‘El Clásico’ tyrants by talking a bit about local football teams, although Levante and

Villarreal fans will always say there was a bias towards Valencia CF. So what went wrong? Like so many things born of the new hope brought about by the new democracy, it lost a sense of proportion. While it at least partially achieved some of its original goals, they were increasingly pushed to the background in favour of the vanity and overreaching bluster of the politicians who ran it. Very quickly it wasn’t enough for Canal 9 to be just a mouthpiece and showcase for Valencia. It wanted to be a major channel competing, in the region, with national channels like Antena 3 and Tele 5 who naturally have purely commercial objectives. The schedules became increasingly filled up with Mexican soap operas and old Westerns, which were initially dubbed into Valencian but the number of programmes in Spanish increased year by year. Last year only 42% of the output of Canal 9 was in Valencian, compared to 58% in Spanish, and only 32% of its output was self-produced. Programmes like ‘Parle Vosté’ where Valencians aired their views on local issues were replaced by the infamous people-shouting-at-eachother-about-nonentity-celebrity-gossip show ‘Tómbola’ which ran from 1997 – 2004 and was broadcast in Spanish. Not surprisingly, it was Canal 9’s greatest success and was franchised to local channels all over Spain. The other major problem was the transparent lack of political objectivity. CANAL 9 almost always, until the recent impending closure, toed the political line of whoever was in

power locally to an almost embarrassing extent. Little by little, this led to a drop in audience as people became increasingly tired of what they saw as manipulation by the local government. Amazingly, but well in keeping with the deranged period of devilmay-care local government spending of the time, this fall in audience figures was accompanied by huge increases in staff and budgets at the channel. When the opposition complained that Canal 9 had lost sight of its objectives, the response was to throw more money at the problem by creating two more locally run channels. Punt Dos would be totally in Valencian and be dedicated to local issues and events (Hang on... wasn’t that what Canal 9 was supposed to do?) and Nou 24 was a 24 – hour news channel in Valencian dedicated mostly to international news (just what the world was waiting for!). With the coming of the recession this all became unsustainable, especially considering its audience share in the Valencia region was averaging just 3% (the maximum share reached was about 30% when the channel showed football matches involving Valencia CF). People round here will say that they want a Valencian channel representing themselves and their region but not many of them were watching. The first redundancies were announced and an official collective dismissal order was approved making over 1,000 Canal 9 workers redundant. A new, slimmed-down, more “efficient” Canal 9 went on air on 9 October this year (complete with an expensive new

logo and an extensive advertising campaign). Then, on 5 November, the Valencia High Court declared the dismissal order null and void and that all the workers must be reinstated. The regional government’s reaction to this was to announce plans to completely close the station down. Now in complete rebellion, Canal 9’s news presenters started to turn against their masters and read out a rejection of the government’s plans on the midday news. Which brings us to the events of Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of November this year. After a feisty debate and last-minute attempts by the opposition to find a solution, the regional government approved the closing down order. They tried to catch the unions and the staff of the channel out and avoid as much media attention as possible by attempting to close down broadcasting in the middle of the night on Thursday. But hundreds of Canal 9 workers were waiting for the official liquidators and managed to stop them from entering the building. There were plenty of local police around but, not wishing to cause a riot, the liquidators decided to take the legal route and applied for a judge’s order allowing them entrance to the building. This wouldn’t be conceded until the next morning, which allowed the channel to broadcast the heroic stand of the workers besieged inside the building, making their protest and showing the human side of the situation – the reality that over 1,000 people were about to lose their jobs. Then came the true hero of the hour. When the order finally came, the technician who had

been brought in to turn off the signal, a TV repairman from Gata de Gorgos named Paco Signes (known to everyone in the village as Paco ‘Telefunken’ after the now defunct TV manufacturers) refused to pull the plug. He’d been brought to the station hours before but having seen the situation, he decided he was on the side of the workers and declared on live television, “I’m off, I’m not cutting the signal.” And off he went in his van with his nephew Pepe to great cheers and applause. He now has over 3,000 followers on Twitter and has gone into Valencia folklore. The channel was finally cut off at 12.05h on Friday the 28th of November. Regrettably, Canal 9 has not been the only big closure in this time of recession but they were the only ones who were able to broadcast their last stand for 12 hours on live television. A propaganda disaster for the regional government. They now say a new private Canal 9 will appear in 2015 (on 9 October naturally) which may have been what the PP-led regional Government wanted all along. The channel was grossly overreaching, overstaffed and unjustifiably costly to run. However, one thing is for certain – there is a need for an outlet to talk about local news, about local issues, local events and some football news that isn’t just the two big city clubs.

RESTAURANTS OF THE YEAR Life is rarely how you plan it! I may have mentioned we were moving in my last column, our move was delayed by a week, which in the normal scheme of things is not such a great problem. The problem was that we had friends arriving to stay with us, three old friends that we hadn’t seen for some years and who were expecting all the creature comforts of a home of some years. They arrived on the final day of a move so convoluted, I cannot begin to explain. They arrived at our front door as the last lorryload pulled up. They were very sensible. They said hello to the removal men and retired to what was to become, very quickly, their (and our) local bar, and called us from there. Camaleón (***) is a bar – restaurant with a large terrace, which was great for our sun and warmth – starved friends from the UK. They sat and ordered gin & tonics and chatted. They ordered more gin & tonics and decided they might as well stay there for lunch. They asked the manager for tapas and wine and spent a very pleasant couple of hours waiting for the van to deposit its last load in our new flat. When we finally joined our very merry friends, the kitchen was closing, so we had a final glass of wine and a plate of the most wonderful jamón and pan Catalan. Camaleón opens all day

from breakfast (for the best wholemeal croissants in the city) to menú del día at lunchtime through to dinner with tapas in between. It only closes on Sunday evenings. Our long – suffering friends were quite happy to sleep amongst boxes and packing cases, just as long as they were well-fed and watered – and we were able to do them proud. We recommended places for them to eat in the daytime and we took them to favourite haunts at night. L’Aplec (**) in the Barrio del Carmen is one such favourite. It’s brash and bright (almost too bright) and ver-rry noisy but the food more than makes up for all that. Fresh from the huerta (the market gardens that surround Valencia), the vegetables are served to perfection. Sonia, the owner – chef, does the best artichokes I have ever eaten, lightly floured and fried to perfection. It is not a vegetarian restaurant but some of her best dishes are the vegetable ones. You need to book this one as it fills very quickly. Another favourite we always take guests to is La Mora Taberna (***), the weather was so warm we booked a table on their terrace. Everything from the decor to the service is excellent and the food never disappoints, fresh and beautifully presented tapas, lovely salads and plates to share, and all so reasonably priced. A favourite for lunch is to be found in the

heart of Cabanyal, so famous now you expect it to be clichéd, but it’s not. The mighty Casa Montaña (****) has to be one of Valencia’s best-known bodegas and tapas bars, by no means cheap, but great value. When most people visit the beach at Malvarrosa, they go to one of the restaurants on the Paseo Marítimo, but if they walk up the road a little to the old entrance to the port, they’ll find a hidden gem. Aduana (***) brushed itself down and became a restaurant with style during the America’s Cup and has kept the standards up since – it’s open all day and serves great food (they do artichokes that almost rival L’Aplec!). If you are at a loss as to what to do on a weekend, take a trip to the Albufera and, weather permitting, take a boat ride across the lagoon. It’s a bargain at 4€ a head and if the sun’s shining, it’s a very relaxing three quarters of an hour. You can then either have lunch at one of the many paella restaurants in El Palmar or go to Pinedo and eat at Llar D’Empar (**), it’s right on the beach and overlooks the harbour. On a weekend you can watch the Royal Yacht Club yachts in regattas from your table as you enjoy a bargain paella menú del día here (starter, pan Catalan and alioli, mussels, paella, dessert, wine and coffee for 15€!). Book at weekends. There are so many more favourites from this year but I am running out of space.

Sarao (**) in Ruzafa – an Andalusian bar, with music and dance (the salpicón de marisco is delicious). copenhagen (***) – simply the best vegetarian restaurant in town with bargain menú del día and great cocktails. For coffee and great cakes and pastries, Dulce de Leche in C/ Jesús – great decor and ambience … and the cakes!! There are so many, many more that we’ve loved this year – and a few we’ve not, but we’ll be back next year to recommend them to you once again. Merry Christmas and Happy eating.

CRISISMAS! By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca As Christmas sneaks up upon us, perhaps a little more quietly in Spain than in other countries, here in La Ola Fresca recipe page, be warned, you will not escape. Christmas, amongst other important core features, of course, is a foodie heaven with households filled with festive treats, when aromas of satsumas, chocolate, freshly baked sausage rolls, mince pies and spices should abound. In our family, pre-Christmas preparation meant a garage packed to the gunnels with the zesty delights of crates of fruit from the market, which my father with his two little helpers would divide into Christmas packs to be handed out to our friends. In the great panic of Christmas present buying and perhaps these ‘not so merry crisismas times…’, sometimes making up your own presents is an economical option that is certainly more personal and definitely a tasty choice. So here are two recipes that you can easily make, wrap to your own design and give to a friend. Toblerone-style Chocolate Biscuit Cake For this dangerous little chocolate number you will need a loose-bottomed sandwich tin, lightly greased with butter. First crush the biscuits in a food processor if you have one, or get rid of any stress using a rolling pin and a plastic bag if you don’t. Treat the walnuts in a similar way and then mix the two together well. Melt the butter with chocolate. Add the granulated sugar and honey followed by the cocoa and the crushed biscuits and walnuts. Add to the greased tin, flatten and chill in the fridge. When it is firm, cut into pieces or leave whole to use at your disposition over the Christmas period. Pre-heat the oven to 180C / Gas 4. Spread the nuts on a baking tray and put in the oven for 10 minutes until

Toblerone-style Chocolate Biscuit Cake1/2 packet of digestive biscuits, crushed

Make up bags mixing either the chocolates or nuts with small Christmas decorations, sweets or dried fruit, then get imaginative with raffia or coloured string.

• 1 handful of walnuts, crushed with the biscuits • 1/3 bar of dark chocolate (72% cocoa solids) • 75 gm / 3 oz. butter • 2 tablespoons honey • 50 gm / 2 oz. granulated sugar • 50 gm / 2 oz. cocoa

Sugar and Spice Nuts • 450 gm / 1lb mixed nuts – almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts etc. • 50 gm / 2oz icing sugar • 50 gm / 2oz brown sugar • 1 tablespoon English mustard powder * • 1 tablespoon paprika or sweet smoked paprika • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds • 2 teaspoons fennel seeds • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary • 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes • 1 teaspoon flaked salt • 1 – 2 tablespoons water * NB: If you can’t find English mustard powder, use a tablespoon of Dijon mustard and mix into the hot water when you add it to the nut mixture. If you think your friends may be a little spice sensitive, adjust the level of mustard and chilli flakes accordingly.

JOSH ROUSE Tell us about the making of your new album, ‘The Happiness Waltz’. I recorded it with the Long Vacations (Cayo Bellveser and Xema Fuertes) as well as Esteban Perles on drums. Long-time collaborator Brad Jones came over to our Rio Bravo studio here in Valencia for five days in June of 2012. Additional overdubs and mixing were done at Alex the Great in Nashville, Tennessee. The collection of songs stretch back over three years and the general theme is how our lives swing from joy to pain every day… and dealing with that. Could you take us through the tracks? “Julie (Come Out of the Rain)” One of the older songs that is just plain old catchy and melancholy. “Simple Pleasure” Just like the song says: Simple pleasure, that is really all I want.

take better care of myself, which means I don’t drink…at least not very much. I’m kinda into ‘downshifting’ these days, which means taking things slow. Touring is lots of planes & trains and consuming and it’s very tiring. I’m trying to live more in the present, trying to live a more spiritual life, away from a society that judges you for your achievements and being identified by how others see you as if that defines who you really are, which it shouldn’t. I also try to live in the moment when I’m playing concerts but sometimes it’s difficult when you’re thinking on stage: “These monitors sound like shit!” Touring is a love-hate relationship. It’s great to tour and see places but you end up missing your family. These days, most of my songwriting gets done in hotel rooms after gigs. In terms of reading, I’ve enjoyed Carole King’s biography “A Natural Woman”, as well as Joe Boyd’s “White Bicycles”. I’m also listening to the new version of Bob Dylan’s ‘Self-Portrait’.

Daniel (the director) used my song “Quiet Town” in his last film “Primos” and we became friends. He asked me to do all the music for “LGFE” and I was honoured as it was something I’ve always wanted to do and I liked the script. After the film was shot, he started sending me 10 – 15 minute edits and I just sat down with a guitar and made shit up! It was time-consuming, as I did like 35 minutes of music and had to redo scenes several times, but I’m glad it turned out well and I’m looking forward to doing more.

“Our Love” The centrepiece of the record in my opinion – happy to play it for anyone and great flutes.

Well, my touring life is so much different than my reality at home. This year we toured the USA, the Netherlands, England, France, Spain and Sweden. Indeed, Sweden is where Spotify started and these days it’s a long haul trying to promote a new album because albums sales are really low due to the trend for free downloading and because of Spotify! In London, we were supported by an American living in England named Sean Rowe. I was impressed by his determination to eke out a living as a musician mostly just playing locally. He’s got a blues, deep baritone voice, kinda like Tom Waits. His music is distinctive and interesting. He’s one to watch. I admire musicians who just try to make it locally, my grandfather was a farmer in rural Nebraska and he would play live music at the weekends for the locals.

SOME CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN SPAIN In order to celebrate Christmas as Spaniards do, here is some information about some of our most particular traditions. Among others, you should know the importance of playing the lottery, of eating turrón (nougat) and 12 grapes and, of course, writing a letter to the Three Wise Men. Lottery: The National Lottery is one of the most popular gambling games in Spain and it offers one of the most significant and largest prizes distributed all year. The lottery has a long tradition and is deeply rooted in Spanish society. From the very beginning, the children of San Ildefonso school in Madrid were responsible for singing the winning lottery number. Currently, every 22 December there is a Christmas special draw and its first prize, ‘El Gordo’ is worth four million euros. An interesting fact is that El Gordo was tax-free until 2012…but not anymore. We encourage you to watch the award-winning short film “La Suerte” by Mario Camus to understand better the impact that the lottery has on our country. And of course, why not buy one lottery ticket? But for those who don’t win anything that day, do not worry. On 6 January, you will have one more opportunity in the El Niño lottery. Good Luck! Nougat (El Turrón): Most scientists have pointed out that the origin of turrón (nougat) comes from the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabs brought this dessert to the Mediterranean shores, in particular Spain and Italy. The Spanish version was born in the province of Alicante around the 15th century. The habit of enjoying Christmas nougat was spread throughout Spain in the 16th century, at least among the more affluent sectors of society. In Jijona, there is a legend that tells us the story of how nougat originated: “At that time, the King married a Scandinavian princess, who had to come to this country leaving behind her cold country. The princess was very sad not to be able to enjoy the Article © 2013/14 24/ 7 Valencia

beautiful landscapes of the country full of perpetual snow. The king, desperate at seeing the new queen so melancholic and wishing to keep her from sadness, had the idea of planting thousands of almond trees all around his land and around the castle. Thus, when the almond trees blossomed, the landscape came alive with white hues, so that everything looked snowy and the princess regained her happiness. The people of Jijona, from that time, learned to reap the fruits of the almond and treat them, and therefore produced the first samples of nougat and its derivatives.” Grapes: The tradition of eating 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve dates back to the early 20th century. This custom is not due to religious or cultural reasons. Grape harvesters had great production of this fruit in 1909 and, in order to get rid of it, they invented the ritual of eating 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve to bring good luck. You should take 12 grapes coinciding with the 12 bell strokes that lead to the New Year. But be careful not to choke! Day of the Three Wise Men: January 6th marks the day of the Three Wise Men. To celebrate a good day you must have completed the following steps:

THE REMAINS OF THE DAY When I visit the UK, it is usually at Christmas time, which of course means it is compulsory to put on several kilos amid roast turkey, Quality Street, microwaved turkey, mince pies and turkey sandwiches. Moreover, coming from Spain I encounter an additional attack on my metabolism – the meal times themselves. A typical day for me in the UK’s festive season starts with a traditional British breakfast of eggs, bacon, beans, sausages, mushrooms and a fried slice, washed down with milky tea, whereas in Spain I have got used to a coffee and a piece of toast. Thus bloated, I sprawl in front of the telly to watch “The Snowman” or whatever version of “A Christmas Carol” happens to be on that day. By 12.00h or 13.00h, it’s almost lunchtime. This inevitably means turkey, Yorkshire puds, roast veg, gravy, pigs in blankets, and that mysterious ingredient in Christmas lunch, Brussels sprouts. Nobody likes Brussels sprouts. In my entire life I have never met anyone who likes Brussels sprouts. Why, then, do people eat green balls that taste like earwax at their favourite meal of the year? The last time I asked this question, the blank face staring Article © 2013/14 24/ 7 Valencia

back at me paused in deep thought as if a Jehovah’s Witness had just been asked who created God, and had suddenly begun to doubt. The eventual, tentative reply was: “It’s Christmas, innit?” Personally, I think it’s the token veg that has to be included to convince us that the meal is not all gluttonous pleasure, but actually has a few sprouts that are supposedly good for you, and of course if it’s good for you, it’s not supposed to taste nice anyhow. Maybe I should just leave Brussels sprouts alone as one of those unsolved mysteries of Christmas, and remember the true meaning of this special day: the birth of Santa Claus. In Spain, lunch usually starts at 14.00h at the earliest, so whereas my stomach by this time is usually empty (unless I’ve had a typical Valencian mid-morning snack around 11.00h) my belly button is now jutting outwards as the box of Celebrations starts doing the rounds. Recovering in front of a James Bond movie, Morecambe and Wise or the latest blockbuster premiere that I downloaded six months before, by about 17.00h the turkey rolls, cheese and crackers appear, followed by mince pies with brandy butter, clotted cream and

sherry. At around 20.00h people are starting to go to the pub (when in Spain I may be thinking about having dinner at the very earliest, though at the weekend this would be at 22.00h at least). Around 23.00h, I’m heading back home whereas in Spain I would be starting out. Hence, everybody is in bed while I’m staring wide-eyed at TV’s “Best of the Year Whatever Special” (i.e. repeats), feeling strangely hungry, as around this time I would be having dinner on a day off in Spain. In general, the Spanish do things much later than in other countries. As for meals, there is a small breakfast (if any) on getting up, possibly followed by a mid-morning snack. By the way, morning (mañana) in Spain typically means any time before lunch (i.e. before 14.00h at least). Lunch is fairly heavy compared to in the UK, which is not surprising after so many hours without eating. It is also usually fairly long, with many businesses shutting for three hours till 17.00h, especially outside the big cities. Midweek dinner starts at around 21.00h, and usually later at the weekend. There are several theories as to why the

Spanish have such a different timetable from most other countries. One even says that Franco introduced it to follow the time of day in Nazi Germany. Another claims the reason is that during the last Great Depression, many people had to find two jobs to make ends meet: one in the morning and another in the evening. Whatever the reason, the fact is that this timetable can create very real problems for the working population. Take commuters, for example. If you have a three-hour lunch break, it is usually not worth travelling back home to lunch. As Spanish public transport is not generally geared towards working commuters, this often means using the car and petrol, too. I have friends who go to a local gym, swimming pool or library near their work to kill the long lunchtime. One friend tries to have a siesta in her car. These three hours of downtime also mean that employees must finish work three hours later, around 20.00h. After commuting home, it is not surprising they have to have dinner at 21.00h at the earliest, feeling exhausted. They may then decide to sit down in front of the magic lantern, prime time Spanish TV starting at around 22.00h or 23.00h. Most films and popular programmes thus end well after midnight, with huge commercial breaks that leave you flicking between channels till

you end up watching something else or going to bed anyhow. Incidentally, there is no provision for kids’ programmes in the TV timetable, apart from Japanese cartoons in the morning to keep them occupied while their parents get ready for work. At any time of day you can see and hear quite explicit sex and especially violence on the goggle box. Even so, the Spanish get up early just like other Europeans, meaning that they lose at least an hour’s sleep compared to other countries. Curiously, banks and public offices do not accommodate the average working person’s timetable, either. Banks are open from 08.00h to 14.00h, as are most public buildings, which means that if you need to do any official paperwork (which is inevitable) or banking, you must take time off work. As I am self-employed and work from home, I am thankfully freed from this timetable. Nevertheless, as my friends and clients still have to follow it, I often find it easier to follow suit. Since my job is a fairly cerebral one, however, I have lately been experimenting with different working timetables to see which one suits me, when my mind is working at its best. And strangely enough, I’ve found that it does indeed seem to follow the UK timetable (I think more clearly in the

morning, and work better in the afternoon provided that I have only a light lunch). I have no idea if this is purely because this was the timetable that my metabolism grew up with in Britain, if I am patriotically biased or if such a timetable really is better for people. But I do know that finishing work at 17.00h or 18.00h instead of at 20.00h is very pleasing. It also mitigates a phenomenon that I call the Sunday Evening Syndrome. This syndrome may exist in all countries. Look around on a Sunday evening and you slowly become aware that the prospect of five days’ work is beginning to loom in most people’s minds. It’s like a mini post-holiday stress disorder. Nevertheless, if you’re able to go out in the evening midweek, this minidepression almost disappears. You’re no longer yearning for Friday, but thinking of Monday evening. Paradoxically, Spain is the perfect country for enjoying yourself on a midweek evening just as you would at the weekend, though with fewer queues. It is therefore a shame that so many Spaniards don’t get to enjoy such evenings, as they’re still at work.

BACK ON TRACK Valencia headed into November with pressure on the coaching staff after a string of bad performances had left the team with six defeats from their opening 11 league games. A streaky 1-0 victory at Getafe in the first game of the month did little to relieve the fans’ frustration and the club’s President Amadeo Salvio acted swiftly on his return from business overseas by sacking the sporting director Braulio Vázquez. Manager Djukic survived the cull and was still in charge when Valencia travelled to Switzerland to play St. Gallen in the Europa League. Looking more relaxed away from Mestalla, the team won 3-2 in an entertaining game that secured their place in the knockout stages of the competition. Piatti opened the scoring before the Swiss hit back to take a 2-1 lead just after the hour mark. The little Argentinian restored parity before Sergio Canales struck a winner four minutes from time. Returning to Valencia, Djukic found himself in the spotlight once more as he got the team ready to face his old club Real Valladolid in their next league encounter. Valencia came from behind twice to eke out a 2-2 draw but, once again, it was a lacklustre performance that the home

fans found difficult to stomach. Once a fortress, Mestalla is fast becoming the Achilles heel for the club and until they overcome this problem, Djukic’s tenure will remain a rocky one. The welcome hiatus of a two-week international break allowed Valencia to concentrate on off-the-field issues and address the problems regarding the new ground. Standing idle and barely half-built for a few years due to the club’s well-documented financial crisis, the Madrid-based architects Fenwick Iribarren have been employed to finish the project. They immediately decided to downsize the initial plans and put a new design in place which was hastily approved by all concerned. Having been instrumental in the development of Espanyol’s CornellàEl Prat stadium, the appointment of Fenwick Iribarren could prove inspirational in bringing the project much-needed closure, and finally stem this gushing financial wound that is continuing to cripple the club. Back on the pitch, Valencia welcomed home most of its international stars from World Cup and friendly duty on time, but Sofiane Feghouli was a day late in returning after reportedly celebrating Algeria’s qualification to Brazil too heavily. Although Valencia accepted the player’s and the Algerian Football Association’s explanations for his delayed return publicly and issued no fine, he tellingly took no part in the game against Elche the following weekend.

Promoted last year, the Valencia region club have had a positive start to this season and sat comfortably in a midtable position prior to the game. Approximately 2,000 Valencia fans made the short trip down the A-7 to the quaint Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero for the Sunday afternoon game. The stadium, one of 17 used when Spain hosted the World Cup, was the venue when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982 to record the largest winning margin in the history of the final stages. Over 30,000 spectators enjoyed a game that was a great advert for Spanish soccer. Elche went ahead against the run of play with a goal from Fidel. Valencia then continued to press and press, missing chance after chance before Juan Bernat finally equalised well into the second half. As Los Chés pushed for a winner, the home side stole a goal on the break to snatch all three points when substitute Cristian Herrera hit the winner, slotting home from a tight angle with a shot from just inside the penalty box eight minutes from time. If Valencia’s luck was out at Elche, it was certainly in at Swansea, as the Spanish side sneaked out of Wales with a 1-0 victory despite the Swans having a perfectly good goal disallowed. Returning from Wales on a high, thanks to Dani Parejo’s winning strike half way through the first half, the team’s next opponents were Osasuna of Pamplona. The

something to cheer as the home team ran out comfortable winners 3-0, and the Brazilian international Jonas Goncalves bagged the match ball by scoring all three goals. December will be a testing time for Los Chés. In the league they have back-toback games against both Madrid sides before the Christmas break, and then start the New Year with a local derby with neighbours Levante UD. Other matches in December for Valencia include their entry into the Copa del Rey, when they play Nàstic of Tarragona on a home-and-away basis, and the final game in the Europa League group stages, a fixture at Mestalla against the Russian side Kuban Krasnodar. Even before this match, Valencia have finished top of their group, and more importantly, have now avoided the

Champions League sides dropping into this competition when the draw is made on 16 December in Nyon, Switzerland. Meanwhile, in the northeast of the city, Levante have endured a horrid November, losing all four games they have played. The demise started with a heartbreaking home defeat to Granada. The game looked to be heading for stalemate until Piti broke the deadlock with one minute to go for the visitors. Next followed a tough loss in the San Mamés to Athletic Bilbao. Leading through a Barral goal, Levante again succumbed to two late goals from Rico, and former Valencia star Aduriz. These two harsh losses were compounded by a 3-0 hammering from Villarreal in the Ciutat de Valencia. To

round off the wretched month, they came unstuck at Getafe when once again they lost out late in the game, this time to a solitary goal from Pedro León. In December, Levante have Elche at home and Atlético Madrid away, as well as two Copa del Rey fixtures with Recreativo Huelva to contend with either side of the Elche fixture. 24/7 VALENCIA depends on the DJ playing that night who dominates the style. Finally, this huge club organizes live concerts under the name of Republicca, and groups such as Supersubmarina will be coming here soon! Sounds good to me;). So, I definitely recommend that you go and check Koh Tao out and it doesn’t really matter what style of music you prefer, because in one of the two rooms I’m sure you’ll find it – the only thing you won’t find will be any of that mainstream commercial radio bull**** you find in so many places;).

Party people!!!! This edition I’m going to speak about a new club called the Koh Tao Club (C/ Bajo Vinalopó, 2, kohtaoclub.com/ webapp/club/fe ). It’s located in Mislata on the outskirts of the city centre of Valencia (10 minutes by car). This huge club can hold almost 2500 people divided between two rooms, the main room named ‘Bamboo’ (about 1800 peeps) and another called ‘Thai’ ( 600 peeps). Both rooms have got a very good sound system from Bose brand and a Martin visuals and lights system. Koh Tao is decorated in a very cool way with big sapphires with minimalistic projections, also the interior is decorated with a subtle taste. This club opens almost every Saturday but with different names. Twice a month it’s called ‘Koh Tao Club’ and the other two it opens under the name of ‘Furtive’. At Koh Tao Club you will hear mainly house, deep house and techhouse. Artists like Adam Beyer, Barem, Dosem, Ambivalent, Tobi Neumann and DJ W!ld have played here since its opening night on 8 October this year. You lucky Valencian clubbers can go there this December and hear DJs such as Christian Smith or Cuartero. There’s an amazing team of resident DJs, too – Bel:Bro (facebook.com/belbroofficial), Dario Méndez (facebook.com/pages/ dario-mendez/199265889358?fref=ts) and Papu (facebook.com/papuqoqoa?fref=ts). Also DJs like Kaiserloop (facebook.com/ Kaiserloop?fref=ts) and Recho (facebook. com/Rechouski?fref=ts) play there on a regular basis. This dedicated team of residents and guest DJs are responsible for creating Koh Tao’s unique sound, each one with his own style and great mixes – well done, guys, you’re smashing it up big style;) On the other hand we have Furtive, which programmes EDM, drum ‘n’ bass,

dubstep and trap twice a month, too. To be honest, I haven’t been to any of their nights but I have been told that they have some kicking sessions and they have had DJs such as Pendulum (DJ set), South Central, DJ Amable, and Zombie Nation so it can’t be half bad;). During the month of December, Koh Tao is proud to announce The Prodigy DJ set (Maxim) on the 5th and Gorillaz Sound System (DJ set) on the 14th!!! Definitely dates not to be missed, so get booking online now to assure your tickets as they won’t be there for long, that’s a promise! As we can see, this club is going to bring Valencia a huge amount of great DJs and personally I’m really excited to see who they have planned for us in 2014. Also I’ve got to give a big shout out to the crew working hard at Furtive because they have a diverse and interesting group of residents as well, who I have heard around Valencia and are also very good DJs – Swag Nites (facebook. com/SwagNitesValencia?fref=ts), Rêver (facebook.com/rever.official?fref=ts), Ohcan & Dosis (facebook.com/ ohcananddosis?fref=ts) and finally Soak (facebook.com/DJSOAK?fref=ts). Koh Tao Club also opens their doors for private parties on Thursdays or Fridays (Erasmus parties, university parties etc...). Depending on the day, you will find one type of crowd or another. At Koh Tao parties, the techno and house crew tend to be the main players and the age varies from 20 – 30 years old and, from what they told me, in their opinion it’s the best club experience in the city(at the moment I might have to agree with them)! Whereas, Furtive moves a different kind of group aged from about 18 – 25, also the dress code is completely different to Koh Tao’s public, let’s just say a little bit more classic. We do quite a lot of sterilizations, as we work with many cat refuges and people that take care of urban cat colonies. I have to say that partly because we are in a chalet area and partly because we always have done a lot of feline work, more than 50% of our clients are cats and we actually love dealing with our feline patients. This is a bit unusual in Spain, as traditionally they used to have a lot more dogs than cats. Fortunately, this has been changing over the past few years and there is a tendency to vaccinate and for owners take better care of their cats. In the afternoon, we have more appointments, also some pets in our grooming parlour and we finish work at about 20.30h. Then home, and hopefully we will not be called back again as we vets have got to be prepared to deal with Article © 2013/14 24/ 7 Valencia

What are the common problems that pets have? Any preventative measures you would recommend? Typical problems that we see in dogs are a lot of cases of parasitical diseases such as tick and mosquito-borne diseases. Viral infections, such as leukaemia and immunodeficiency, are more common in cats. Luckily, there are products on the market now to prevent the mosquito disease, such as a course of vaccines or inmunoprotector syrup, which are proven to be very effective. For cats, we have vaccines against leukaemia, flu, etc., and it’s even more important to have your pet vaccinated, as these diseases are extremely common since cats spend more time outdoors. What advice would you give to people who are planning to have a pet for Christmas? Thinking about a pet for Christmas? Well, I think we all know about the dangers of doing this (plenty of unwanted presents roaming around the streets later on when the puppy or kitten becomes a mature animal). Of course, we can do it if the person who is getting the present knows about it and they could even help us to select the pet! You lived and worked for a fair while in Britain. How does it compare to living in Spain? I have to say that I love Britain and English culture, etc., though I missed the Spanish lifestyle and the food when I was there. If I could choose, I would live here but would travel to the UK more often.
