Mediterranea de Hamburguesas sl At Mediterranea Hamburguesas sl, quality is our trademark and what sets us apart. We choose to work with the best materials, with a freshness and distinctive quality too. We enhance each burger with touches of the Mediterranean. Our daily challenge is to be the best burger bar in Valencia. Our meat comes from Valles de Esla in the province of Leon. The mostly mountain-bred animals are raised in semi-liberty, protecting the cattle and the environment. They feed on natural milk, vegetables & natural forages. Due to this healthy diet, their fats are heart-healthy. Our butchers get the best cuts and we take care to mince the meat daily, to preserve all its quality in addition to its unique flavour.

All our vegetables are selected daily from the market to ensure freshness. Our bread is made the traditional way, wood oven baked with 100% natural ingredients. You can choose from Mediterranean, American poppy seed, coca or gluten-free bread. Or potatoes are fresh and homemade daily, fried in 100% vegetable oil, which is ecofriendly and government approved. Delicious and healthy at the same time! Our burgers are cooked in the moment, so you can enjoy the fresh flavour. We are not a slow burger bar but we are not fast food

either. We have a menu with 15 burgers as well as sandwiches, salads and starters. All with most original and tasty recipes that make our burger the best in the city. If people spent less time arguing and more time making love...the world would surely be a better place. Despite the trials and tribulations of the economic crisis, love is one of the few things in the world that is still free. Financially, many countries are still in a mess but 'el amor' as a kindly force amongst people will never die. .. The real deal? Yes! '24/7 Valencia' is a magazine that has a real love for Valencia and has stuck by it through thick and thin, which is the true test of anything you really believe in. Now in its 14th year, 24/7 Valencia is recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, El País, Time Out, Let's Go, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Levante-EMV, Super Deporte, CNN.com and many more... In this loved-up February edition, we have an expert review of the classy Mar D'Avellanes restaurant, a perfect place to enjoy a Saint Valentine's dinner. After dining out, why not check out the article by DJ John Treacy with his round-up of cool live music spots that he and his girlfriend are currently enjoying. We have an exclusive article on the once overlooked 'Distrito 008', which centres on the barrios of Botanico & Juan Llorens and is continuing to grow in terms of bohemian tapas bars, clubs,

live music nights, workshops, events and more. In contrast to the alternative actvities of the aformentioned district, we have an exclusive report on the 'posh' Mercado Colon in the Ensanche area of town. Check out our packed February listings of Chill Out, Traditional Pubs, Clubs, Bars, Restaurants, Shopping, Classifieds and more. Gig goers and clubbers can enjoy a packed agenda of live music and club nights at the back. Those of you who enjoy dancing until well past the dawn can also enjoy photos of '24/7 Valenca Party People' at La Rambleta. We dedicate this issue to the late, great Donna Summer and we send love and peace to all the locals, expats and visitors who have supported us over the years. Many thanks! Love comes in many colours... “When you're laying so close to me There's no place I'd rather you be than with me, uh... Do it to me again and again You put me in such a awful spin, in a spin...”

Distrito 008: Try Something Different Fancy trying somewhere different away from your beloved old haunts in the Carmen, Ruzafa or Cánovas? Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there’s plenty of life in Valencia beyond the classic nightlife barrios. One of the most lively and interesting alternatives is the area the folks ‘in the know’ are calling Distrito 008.The area takes its name from its post code and is just on the edge of the Carmen outside the limits of the ancient medieval walls on the other side of the Torres de Quart. It includes C/ Palleter, the old ‘90s favourite area of Juan Llorens, C/ Turia and the area of bars and restaurants around Abastos. Valencia’s Botanical Gardens (the oldest in Europe ) separate the area from the river and you’ll also find the Finca Roja at the barrio’s other edge (C/ Jesús area), a huge apartment block built in 1939 which sought to introduce a style of social housing that was ‘red’ in more than just the colour of its bricks.

restaurants around C/ Juan Llorens and Abastos, you have places like Loco Club (C/ Erudito Orellana, 12). One of the best and most innovative concert venues in Valencia, it has a busy schedule with a musically eclectic mix of upcoming and established bands and even the odd tribute act. There’s also Juanita Club (now on C/ Jesus, 91) which has been a hangout for Valencian reggae, ska and dub fans for around two decades, a classic which has very recently moved from the Botánico barrio to near the Mercado Jesús. La Edad de Oro (C/ San Jacinto, 3), which also offers live music and a rock ’n’ roll feel just off Gran Vía Fernando el Católico, has an eclectic disco after gigs. For a different kind of night out, you’ve got the Teatre El Micalet (C/ Maestro Palau, 3). Dating back to its origins in 1893 as the Valencia Choral Society, the theatre offers a programme of classic and modern works, 100% in the Valencian language.

There are certainly a few classics of Valencia nightlife in the area. Along with the well-established bars and

There are also of course a whole bunch of places you may not have discovered yet but are worth a look. Funky Food (on

the corner of C/ Palleter and C/ Calixto III) is decorated with pictures of old ‘50s rock ’n’ roll stars and has the DIY feel and personality of an old-style Carmen bar with music, quintos and affordable food. Also on C/ Calixto III is Tango and Truco, an attractive Argentinian bar run by football fanatics serving homemade chimichurri and chorizo criollo washed down with a few glasses of Quilmes beer and across the street is the famous Bar Alhambra, where people come from miles around for some of the best tortillas in Valencia. Cantonet del Palleter is round the corner on C/ Palleter, a friendly welcoming place serving tapas and good gin & tonics. On C/ Turia, you’ll find the modern-looking La Malaquita, which has art exhibitions and a busy calendar of events and a well-thoughtout menu including salad, homemade tapas and lasagne. Down the road is La Llesca, where you can also find exhibitions and good music and a group menu for 12 euros including a free bar for beer. On C/ Pere Bonfill there’s La Greta, which has decent veggie and vegan options. For later in the evening, on C/ Pérez Escrich there’s Magazine

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

Club, which describes itself as the best rock ‘n’ roll and underground music dive in Valencia. Next door to Magazine you will find the cultural centre La Llimera, which features live acts (sometimes avant-garde and experimental) as well as art exhibitions. At the centre of all this and true to the feel of the barrio is Bodega Valero (C/ Palleter, 51), a little bar with tons of personality and character. It has been part of the neighbourhood for a long time in its various guises as a grocer’s, a traditional bodega selling wine and liqueurs by the litre, and a bodegabar run by two brothers for the last 26 years with the help of friends and family. What makes it different from other bodegas is its connection with, and active support of, music and musicians. Blues, jazz, rock, pop, even flamenco and experimental folk are part of the soundtrack. It’s decorated with posters from left-wing and social and alternative movements, Marxist memorabilia, internationalist organisations and art, Valencian ceramics, 1980s lamps and 1920s mirrors and hundreds of photos of friends and customers. Unlike some places you can tell the decoration wasn’t

brought in as a job lot by a subcontracted designer, it’s just been built up over the years and in some way tells the story of the bar. There are traditional tapas (txistorra in cider, sepia a la plancha, habas) and some less traditional like homemade falafel, the speciality being the chicken in a tomatoey salsa sauce. There’s beer, vermouth, cider and a large selection of wines (it’s a bodega, after all) to drink. You can finish up with a chupito of cazalla, mistela or the “elixir de los poetas”, absinthe. Typical of the area, there is a TV on the wall in Bodega Valero but when we were there it wasn’t showing sport, inane videos or people shouting at each other. They were showing old, black & white silent movies, which added to the atmosphere rather than distracted from it. A refreshing change from the norm. David Rhead and José Marín

VALENCIA MUSIC “Dulce” This song talks about innocence, of being in love, the beginning of a relationship, how love can conquer all and make the difficult easy.

Tell us something about life, experiences, travels inspirations...

I was born in Valencia in the barrio of Benimaclet. I’ve been composing songs since I was 12 years old. When I was 18, I formed my first female pop-rock band called Lawyers. Later on, we formed a mixed group called 13 Brujas as I continued to make demos and produce my own recordings. Over the years, I have lived in Cartagena and Villena (south of Alicante). I know Santander, La Coruña, Madrid and I love every corner of Toledo. Each song is a journey in my life, love and hope moves you, it’s what makes us feel alive and evolve as people. What are your musical influences? I love many types of distinctive artists of differing styles. Alejandro Sanz, Alanis Morisette, Enrique Bunbury and Vetusta Morla would be first on my playlist. If I were to go back in time, I would vote for the great John Lennon and I would always count on the Commitments, U2, Guns & Roses and Aerosmith. I really love music from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Despite all of these influences, I’m also conscious that you don’t need to go far to encounter real talent on the current music scene. Take us through the songs on your new album, ‘Ingravidez’. “La Flor del Día”

This track talks about the miracle that is life, unconditional love and the promise of a better world.

It talks of my awakening. It’s a track with a lot of light, very pure and at the same time very subtle, to give and to receive, it’s delicate. I knew that I wanted to end the album with this song, making a comparison with the Phoenix rising from the ashes. The idea that despite having fallen, I’ve risen with more courage, more motivated to fight on and with more love of self.

“Ingravidez”

are still in love and that life is leaving you by the wayside, knowing that the person you love is forgetting about you.

This ballad describes a break-up, when your heart is broken and you realize that all you gave didn’t serve for anything. “4 Horas” It talks of the gratitude of having someone special by your side and your dreams with this person. “Volver” It’s a song that talks of the importance of having a good friend who hugs you in difficult times, even knowing that this is of little solace as they try to pull you out of a life of mediocrity. To get you back to what you were, to return to the centre of each and every one of us, to thinking and feeling with clarity. “La Brisa y La Sal” It talks of a love that heals the wounds that others caused and takes you with little effort to the light at the end of the tunnel, to breathe once again. “Y Esperar” About eternal love, to miss somebody. How the days, years and winters pass and you live in solitude because you don’t have the person you love by your side. “Los Días” When the days don’t let you fight anymore and you accept defeat, knowing that you

Fantastic! It has been wonderful that we’ve filled the salas in the two concerts that we played and people have enjoyed live shows with really strong performances. I’ve got a great line-up of seven marvellous musicians: Nelo Alfonso (piano), Alfred Lorente (bass), Vicente Merodio (drums), Sylvie Berger (viola), Héctor J. Ibañez (acoustic guitar) and Edgar Codutti (electric guitar). We’re selling a lot of records, the feedback from people has been spectacular and people sing along to our songs at concerts. I’m really happy because in such a little time we have achieved so much! Many thanks to my ‘gente’. I’m very grateful. What are your future plans? To keep my enthusiasm for my music and that people will remember me for it and that they come to our concerts! I’m convinced that they’ll see something special. I also think you should consider checking out and buying my album ‘Ingravidez’ on iTunes, Amazon or in FNAC. The album is produced by the genius Juan Luis Giménez of Presuntos Implicados, who looked after every aspect of the production. It is mixed by Manuel Tomás (winner of a Latin Grammy) and Enrique Soriano was responsible for the mastering. It’s a sincere album, full of emotion and it won’t leave you indifferent. If you want to know more, check out my Facebook page, estercasanovapaginaoficial, and you’ll find some surprises during these months. Thanks! Interview by Owl

FOOD

Albóndigas con calamares y aroma de chocolate y canela By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Although a delight to the new arrival or visitor to Valencia, once you have been here for a while, familiarity tends to dampen excitement and you can become blasé and not be so whimsical about the wonders of dishes such as paella, calamari and other joys. In the average bar, the most popular dishes naturally are always the safest bet and eventually there is the feeling that you could enter blindfolded and guarantee that the usual suspects – crisp fried whiting, calamares, jamón, ensalada rusa, paella, grilled squid or pimientos de padrón and so on – will obediently troop out to order. So for those with a craving for something a little different, here is a recipe with a Valentine twist on the traditional, to rekindle your ardour for Spanish cooking. To discover this Valentine recipe created by Amparo, we take a gasp of the fresh February air and, with a twinkling of Spring in the wings, head for the beautiful hills and sparkling waters of Serranía de Turia to the village of Gestalgar and the casa rural / bed & breakfast Amarain. The recipe interestingly combines meatballs and squid, with a seductive sauce imbued with both those classic romantic playmates, chocolate and cinnamon, to come up with Albóndigas con calamares y aroma de chocolate y canela. Preparation Mix all the ingredients for the meatballs together and leave to rest. Clean the squid. Chop the onion and garlic finely. Gently heat a little olive oil in a saucepan and add the onions, garlic, laurel, some pine nuts and the squid. Add the wine, water, salt and pepper.

Meatballs with Squid and Aroma of Chocolate and Cinnamon (for 4 – 5 people) • 1/2 kg minced meat (mix of beef and pork) • 1 egg • Fresh parsley and pine nuts (at your discretion) • 3 spoonfuls fresh breadcrumbs • 3 spoonfuls milk (or use bread soaked in milk as an alternative) • Salt and pepper • Flour for dusting • • Ingredients for Squid • • 1/2 kg small squid, cleaned • 1 onion • 2 cloves garlic • 2 laurel leaves • Pepper and salt • Olive oil • 1/2 glass white wine • 1/2 glass water • • Ingredients for Sauce • • 15 gm dark chocolate • 1 clove garlic • 12 hazelnuts, almonds or cashews • Fresh parsley • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Put the lid on and leave to cook on low heat for about 20 minutes, when the squid should be cooked. Meanwhile make small balls with the meat paste, and roll them lightly in flour. Fry lightly and put to one side. Sauce Using a pestle and mortar, grind the rest of the ingredients (chocolate, garlic, nuts, parsley and ground cinnamon) together. If necessary add a little liquid

from the saucepan. Add this paste to the saucepan, mix well and cook for 10 minutes at a gentle heat. Next add the meatballs and gently cook for a further 10 minutes. Serve with rice and salad and let Cupid do the rest of the work! If you would like to discover Casa Amarain for yourself, in March we are offering a special weekend to learn how make what indeed is a classic of the Valencian table, Arroz al horno (ovenbaked rice), and at the same time you can practice your Spanish. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

MAR D’AVELLANES Last time we met on these pages I told you a little about some of our favourite restaurants of 2013. I am starting this year with a restaurant which will certainly be on my list of favourites for 2014. Our meal this month was at Mar d’Avellanes in Valencia, on a little street off C/ del Mar called C/ de Avellanes – hence the name. It’s just a stone’s throw from Plaza de la Reina. By the way, avellanes are hazelnuts in Spanish. Let’s take in the decor first – minimalism in white, you enter the restaurant by way of a gentle ramp lined on the left by long vertical wooden rods and on your right by willowy white curtains which frame a half a dozen tables. We were shown to seats in this area and sat beside a wall of dozens of framed black & white photos of the sea and beaches. We were welcomed and offered an aperitif but declined and went straight to a very good López de Haro Crianza from Rioja and a bottle of Numen Premium Water. We were to have the Menú Degustación, which at night is a respectable 26.50€ a head. We began with three sharing dishes, the first of which was a salad of a soyamarinated salmon. The salmon was soft and delicious. Next came scallops with a douxelle of wild mushrooms, parsnip chips and roasted pumpkin. The scallops were just cooked, seared to perfection. The third dish of our trio of starters was a very soft poached egg with breadcrumbs, jamón Serrano and truffle oil, a lovely combination. There were two main courses. First came Pez Mantequilla, a firm white fish – seared like the preceding scallop and accompanied by maize, pureed and

powdered. Succulent and delicious. The second of our main dishes was a Lamb Terrine, which sat on a purée of potatoes scattered with tiny flakes of celery and vegetables. I love lamb and particularly love it a little well done, so this suited me perfectly. A lemon sorbet followed, cool and refreshing. Our final dish of the evening was a sweet ‘ingot’ of mango white chocolate. A light and delicious finale to an excellent meal. Mar d’Avellanes deserves its good reputation, the restaurant is fully booked most weekends and it can be hard to get a table in the evening even midweek, so book early to avoid disappointment. The service is friendly, efficient and discreet. The surroundings are calm and comfortable and even when the chatter was at its fullest, the acoustics were good enough to allow you to hear your own conversations. Our welcoming and knowledgeable host was Claudia Peris and the chef, Jesús Martínez, has Michelin star restaurant experience.

VALENCIA BOOKS

OLGA FEDINA How does it compare to capitalist Europe? This is a complex question. I think the main thing was the absence of choice in the USSR, and this was both good and bad. Good because people did not spend their time trying to obtain more and better. Life was less stressful with that feeling that nothing depended on you anyway. But then, of course, having little choice was not so great, because when everything is chosen for you, you end up feeling you have no say in your life at all.

What was it like growing up in Communist Russia? Communist Russia was a strange world. Nowadays many Russians look back with nostalgia at those times when life seemed simpler, you were guaranteed work, medical services, free education. Of course I also feel certain nostalgia for that bygone world of my childhood. Nevertheless, I remember life in the USSR as being pretty grey, tedious and restrictive, full of hypocrisy. My parents were simple Soviet engineers (almost everyone was an engineer in the USSR), although their jobs were more about shifting papers around than designing planes. As early as I can remember I had a feeling I would not be able to fit into that world. I did not want to become engineer, did not want to shift papers around, but wasn’t sure what else was out there. And then – what perfect timing! – when I was in my teens, perestroika came, and everything changed. It became possible to travel, to see the world. Foreigners appeared on the streets of Moscow. They looked so different, like aliens, dressed in such strange fashion and smiling for no reason. I enrolled at the journalism department of the Moscow State University, studying in the evening and working for newspapers during the day. I had learned English, mostly on my own listening to the songs of the Beatles and the Doors, and started working for an English language paper, the Moscow Times, within an international (American, British and Dutch) team. Young Muscovites could make a career very quickly in those days, in that fastchanging society. Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

I think few people in the West realize that the Soviet world, ostensibly egalitarian, was a world with very little social mobility, and what made that world ‘go round’ was not money, but access to privileges and connections. There was a lot of competition for this access, and those people who already had privileged parents in high party ranks, would win. Just as George Orwell said: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Tell us something about your work and travels. In 1996 I went to London, where I had lived for 10 years, working as a Russian language teacher. At the same time, much as I liked writing and languages, I felt my main interest lay elsewhere. I have always been interested in the Oriental methods of health preservations, but was not sure one could do something related to it for a living. In London I made a radical turn in my career and studied acupuncture. For the last decade I have been working as an acupuncturist and Shiatsu massage therapist first in London, then here in Valencia. I practise Qigong and Tai Chi, and I went to China last year on a trip organized by Tantien School, the Tai Chi school in Valencia. We would wake up at 6.00h every morning, two hours of Qigong and Tai Chi, then a long hike along the Great Wall or in the mountains of Wudang full of Daoist monasteries. Maybe not everyone’s idea of a holiday, but I loved it. Could you take us through your new book?

The book is called “What Every Russian Knows (And You Don’t)”. I had the idea of writing it when I noticed that many students of Russian, even those who mastered the language at a high level, found themselves lost in cultural references, phrases from popular films, novels or animated cartoons that people use in daily conversations. I also experienced the same thing, moving first to Britain, and then to Spain. I decided to help students of Russian and everyone who is interested in Russia by compiling in this book twelve phenomena of popular culture. They are three films, one singer-songwriter, two animated cartoons, a TV series, two comedians, one novel and one writer. Of course the book is not comprehensive – this is not everything “every Russian knows”. I had to limit my choice, and I did it by not just including those touchstones of popular culture that I particularly like, but those that I felt will help people to understand Russians better. Interview by Owl Olga Fedina has an acupuncture and Shiatsu practice in Valencia www. acupuncturevalencia.com “What Every Russian Knows (And You Don’t)” is available to order at many bookshops, including bookdepository. com that offers free shipping worldwide. The digital version is available at Amazon and at www.whateveryrussianknows. com. To participate in Russia-related discussions, please see www.facebook. com/WhatEveryRussianKnows

Perfectly Pijo: El Mercado de Colón If you spot this on a map, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a place you’d come to buy fruit and veg. Not any more. The former market hall has been beautifully restored and is open to everyone as a smart destination for socialising. This gem hasn’t yet been found by guidebook writers so it’s a haven away from the crowds in the plazas.

body part: Colón is the Spanish name for Christopher Columbus (I had to look that up. Don’t pick me for your Trivial Pursuits team). The side streets open up to reveal the grand market edifice, as impressive as any cathedral. Tourists nearby were photographing a church, probably because it’s listed in their guidebook. I’m more interested in social history and this old market has it by the barrow-load.

Ask a Valenciano about the Mercado and they’ll tell you it’s pijo – for posh people. Why? Because a coffee here costs 20 cents more than average. But I’m a Brit and that’s still half the price of a coffee in the UK. And no one can deny that what Valencia’s planners and builders have done with the Mercado is seriously impressive.

So why was there a market here when the Mercado Central is only 10 minutes walk away? Around 1900, Valencia’s city council decided Colón was busy enough to need a market. Architect Francisco Mora drew up grand plans. Construction began. The hall officially opened – strangely, since it was presumably shut the next day – on Christmas Eve 1916. Alas, there was too much competition: malls flourished but Colón market grew steadily more dilapidated, finally closing in 1985.

I found the Mercado by wandering south off C/ Colón. In case you’re unfamiliar, this district isn’t named after an unseemly Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

Renovating the building was no straightforward job because the market needed good parking. The side streets are already jammed with cars so planners bravely decided to build a car park underground. Think about that for a moment: they cut a 14-metre-deep hole under a building that’s already standing. Restoring the Mercado above ground was more straightforward but equally diligent. Craftspeople carefully cleaned decorations with pressurised water, filled cracks with fibreglass, and re-painted friezes as vibrant as they had been in 1916. Restorers used old photos and spoke to original traders to make sure their work was spot on. To create cosy shops under the draughty old canopy, the designers closed down the space by creating six glass-walled lock-up units. All the tenants aim for top quality. Casa de l’Orxata is rivalling the

city’s long-established horchaterías by serving ‘bio-organic’ produce including Valencia’s famous tiger nut milk, ice cream and modern coffees with plenty of space to sit outdoors. Vino y Flores wraps a restaurant around a florist and serves, in my British unrefined opinion, the best coffee in Valencia. If you can’t stomach Spain’s rocket fuel espresso, V&F answers your prayers. And this place once caused me to write off a shopping trip in favour of a boozy afternoon. I blame the set lunch which includes a pesky glass of vino. One Sunday, I came across the Mercado’s weekly highlight: a free classical concert. Goodbye, quiet afternoon of coffee and writing; hello, people watching. I returned with friends another Sunday. We claimed a table in Casa de l’Orxata, set for an hour of chain-drinking coffee and working our

way through their cake menu (hey, we’re grown-ups – we’re allowed to have cake and only cake for lunch). We were expecting a recital by a local orchestra. We got that, plus a fashion show and street theatre. Local ladies paraded past in an array of leather, fur, sparkles and – yikes – Botox. Several film-star-handsome Valencianos strolled past carrying babies, like living, breathing Athena posters. Then a commotion at the table next to us – six senior gents roared their annoyance as a hapless waiter tipped coffee on one of them. Drenched jeans, burnt skin, an afternoon ruined. Underscoring all this, the band pounded energetically through classical pieces and then thumped out some Glenn Miller and Elvis. Descend downstairs, past the unquestionably pijo waterfall, and you’ll find top-end butchers, Varea with 27

types of hamburger, Manglano with gnarly whole hams, plus the Martin y Mary oyster bar. You can still buy groceries at this mercado, but you’ll need deep pockets. I urge you to visit the Mercado before the Lonely Planet-ers find it. For a quiet coffee, leisurely lunch or a rousing concert, this is my number one tip. Condé Nast calls it ‘over-restored’. I like it. Maybe I’m more pija than I thought. By Suzanne Worthington Sooze is an independent writer/editor helping businesses make their words work harder: www.soozeworthington.com

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Valencia CF beat FC Barcelona 3 - 2!

VALENCIA RING THE CHANGES The six-month reign of Miroslav Djukic as the manager of Valencia CF came to a swift end just before Christmas when the president of the club, Amadeo Salvo, made the decision to relieve the popular Serb of his duties. This came after a string of poor performances that had culminated in an insipid 1-1 home draw in the Europa league against Russian outfit Kuban Krasnodar, and a wretched defensive performance in the Vicente Calderón when Los Chés were outclassed 3-0 by Atlético Madrid.

date and deadlines set for a completion by the Asian businessman have been and gone. The New Year kicked off with a Valencia derby and Levante taking the short trip across the city to Mestalla. Los Chés introduced their new manager, Juan Antonio Pizzi, who had previously coached in his homeland Argentina and in Chile. He was also joined by another former Valencia player, Roberto Fabián Ayala, who was added to the technical staff. Pizzi, a striker by trade, represented his adopted country Spain 22 times but he is probably most famous for winning the coveted ‘pichichi’ for top goal scorer in La Liga whilst playing with unfashionable Tenerife in the 1995-96 season.

Nico Estévez took temporary charge of the club and his first game was against Nàstic of Tarragona in the Copa del Rey. Having drawn the first leg away 0-0, Valencia won the game 1-0 at Mestalla to progress thanks to a goal by Paco Alcácer.

With such an attacking pedigree as a player, Los Chés supporters will be hoping for a more direct approach from their team on the pitch than that of the last two permanent managers, Djukic and Pellegrino, who had often relied on a more conservative approach.

Estévez remained in charge for the visit of Real Madrid and the Blanquinegros played their part in a really entertaining game of football before losing out by the odd goal in a five-goal thriller.

The signs were good against Las Granotas with Valencia running out 2-0 victors thanks to goals from Piatti and Feghouli. Valencia were unfortunate with the Copa del Rey draw as they were matched up against Atlético Madrid, arguably the team playing the best football in La Liga this season. The first leg at Mestalla was a pulsating affair with the spoils shared in a 1-1 draw, Postiga cancelling out Raúl García’s 72ndminute opener with virtually the last kick of the game.

The winter break gave Valencia time to digest their position off the field with Singapore billionaire Peter Lim expressing an interest in buying the club and paying off most of its debts. Several meetings with Valencia’s creditors Bankia have proved unproductive to

A trip to Vigo was Pizzi’s first away fixture and the same old defensive failings came back to haunt the team. Starting brightly, Valencia took the lead through Parejo only to succumb to two second-half goals from Celta’s Brazilian playmaker Charles. Valencia’s inability to hang on to leads in away games had cost them numerous points under the previous administration and it seems the same old problems still exist and need to be eradicated by the coach if he wants to find any kind of success with his new club. A midweek visit to Madrid for the return leg of the Copa del Rey saw Valencia eliminated from this year’s competition as Atlético clinically finished off the job to claim a 3-1 aggregate victory. A third consecutive away outing to Bernd Schuster’s Málaga was next on the calendar and the new manager named a more defensive looking line- up than the ones in Pontevedra and the Spanish capital. The decision seemed to be vindicated as Valencia came away from La Rosaleda with a well-earned point from a 0-0 stalemate. Heading back to Mestalla for their final game in January, Valencia entertained a much improved Espanyol. Falling behind to a third-minute goal, Valencia equalised four minutes later through Paco Alcácer. Valencia then took the lead through a Jonas header from a corner but were pegged back on the stroke of half-time when Sergio García converted a penalty. Valencia failed to score again in the second half and

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

consequently dropped two home points as Espanyol held on for the draw. The club was very active during the January transfer window, snapping up Eduardo Vargas from Napoli, Philippe Senderos from Fulham and former Barça ace Keita from the Chinese club Dalian Aerbin. Probably, the most exciting acquisition was Brazilian youngster Vinicius Araújo from the Brazilian club Cruzeiro. Out of Mestalla went midfielder Sergio Canales, who signed for Real Sociedad on the final day of the deadline, and Andrés Guardado, Éver Banega and Hélder Postiga who went on loan deals to Leverkusen, Newell’s Old Boys and Lazio, respectively. Valencia could not have had a better start to February as they went to the Nou Camp and deservedly came away with a 3-2 victory. Parejo, Piatti and Alcácer were on target in the stunning victory and the Catalans’ night was compounded by former Valencia star Jordi Alba being sent off late in the second half. Levante have had a positive winter

period, with home wins over Elche and Málaga in the league and victories against Recreativo Huelva and Rayo Vallecano in the Copa del Rey to set up a two-legged quarter-final tie with Barcelona.

Anyone wishing to watch football in Valencia can get tickets from the box offices of the respective grounds.

Their away form is less satisfactory with losses to Bilbao and Valencia but without doubt their best results in recent games were a 1-1 league draw at home to Barcelona and a fantastic 3-2 away victory at in-form Sevilla.

See page 30 for football calendar

www.levanteud.com www.valenciacf.com

The much anticipated two-legged Copa del Rey confrontation with Barcelona was a more sobering experience for Las Granotas, who lost out 9-2 on aggregate. A third meeting with Rayo within a month started February for Levante and the home game ended without goals. Both Valencia clubs look capable of securing a Europa League spot by the end of the season but the way things are shaping up it could well be at the expense of each other. Shot Stopper!

LIVE MUSIC IN VALENCIA

24/7 VALENCIA Valencia all year!!!!!! Other places to visit this month for great live music are CAFÉ DEL DUENDE (C/ Turia, 62, cafedelduende.com). This is a perfect place if you like your flamenco music and want to submerge into some Spanish culture whilst sipping on a nice glass of vino tinto. People there are friendly and from 13 through 16 FEB, Paco Berbel, Eva Varela, Niño de Aurora, Javier Calderón ‘El Tete’ and Manuel Reyes will all be coming together to perform a great show for us. I’ve seen them before and I can tell you if you go to see them, you won´t be disappointed;)

SOME LIVE MUSIC IN VALENCIA

recommend going along and enjoying them for yourselves;)

The first place I popped into was SALA MATISSE (C/ Ramón Campoamor, 60, www.salamatisse.es).It is in the Plaza Cedro studenty area of town, not far from Av. Blasco Ibáñez. I went there with my girlfriend and a friend to see a Doors tribute band. I had my doubts before the gig started, but honestly I was completely impressed with their rendition of, in my opinion, one of the best bands of the ‘60s, if not all time!! The quality of the musicians was second to none and the showmanship was spot on. I would have to say it was the best Saturday night that I have had for ages.

The next place I visited was a bar called BIGORNIA (C/ Museo, 10, Facebook: Bigornia Café Pub), just on the outskirts of old town in the Barrio del Carmen and 60 seconds walk from the Río Turia. It’s a perfect location for people to go down and listen to some awesome live music. Yes, I said awesome because the last time I went, there was an amazing reggae group playing and when I say amazing, I mean AMAZING!!!!! Apparently they have started having lots of different types of bands (including jazz) playing there early Saturday and Sunday nights around 21.00h. It’s a perfect time if you ask me, as you can either go home and catch a film before it gets too late or move on to have dinner and follow whichever way the club devil blows you;) I do know that the reggae legends, and when I say legends I mean …well…I´m sure you get the idea by now, hahaha……are playing the last Sunday of every month. If you want to get a good spot, you better get there around 20.00h, as it’s a small place and it fills up quick!;)

This month the acts not to miss are COLDDAY on 7 FEB. I think the name speaks for itself, but for those of you who have no imagination they are a Coldplay tribute band. And the BLISTERS on 15 FEB, who are a Beatles tribute band. I haven´t seen the Coldday band, but I have heard good things. On the other hand I have seen the Blisters at the casino for my birthday last December and they were great, so I strongly

Before I forget, another thing to put in your diaries for this month is the IBERIA FESTIVAL at the ÁGORA (Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias) on 15 FEB. Bands like LOQUILLO, M-CLAN, LA UNIÓN, CELTAS CORTOS, DANZA INVISIBLE, SEGURIDAD SOCIAL AND LA GUARDIA will be performing;) If you know your Spanish rock music or want to get to know some, this is probably going to be the best place to go in and around

This month I´m going to talk about some alternative live music things you can do around Valencia at night rather than the obvious clubbing .Recently I´ve been hitting the live music scene and to tell you the truth, it has improved massively!!!

You also have the well-known BLACK NOTE (C/ Polo y Peyrolón, 15, www. blacknoteclub.com). Lately, they have been having different types of groups from many genres in the music world, but personally this will always be the place in Valencia where I go if I want to listen to some good old-fashioned blues. This month we are in for a special treat on Valentine’s Day as the Valencia Blues Society is presenting a TRIBUTE TO MUDDY WATERS AND HOWLIN’ WOLF, featuring the city’s top blues players playing songs by the fathers of Chicago blues and dazzling us with their husky voices and lightning fast fingers.....I CAN’T WAIT;) And just a quick mention also for all you hard clubbers out there – this month in KOH TAO CLUB (C/ Baix Vinalopó, 2, Mislata, www.kohtaoclub.com ), there are again going to be lots of top DJs and groups such as Cyberpunkers, Marc Houle, Front 242, Foreign Beggars, Benny Rodrigues… but the most important headliner is Loco Dice!! Not forgetting all the fantastic local DJs such as Darío Méndez, Bel:Bro, Papu, Recho, Kaiserloop or Borja Cubes who will be also playing there, too. Well, that’s all for this month, nightlife lovers, hope you all have a great San Valentine’s and just remember, whether you have a partner to snuggle up to on 14 FEB or you don´t, you’ll always have the music, baby yeah!!!! VALENCIA FILM

Diego

DIEGO MARROQUIN

Tell us about your background, travels and experiences. I was born in a little town north of Burgos, Miranda de Ebro. In 1997, I moved to Salamanca to study at the university and earned my degree in Comunicación Audiovisual. Since then, I have been trying to travel all around the world and work as a freelance cameraman. Take us through the process of making ‘Law of the Jungle.’ ‘Law of the Jungle’ is a Danish documentary filmed in the Amazon jungle of Perú. In 2008 a conflict between the oil company Pluspetrol and the indigenous people who live in this area ended with 24 indigenous people arrested and a policeman killed. We were filming the trial at the courtroom in Iquitos for eight months and we also travelled into the deep Amazon jungle to see the reasons for this conflict: the high levels of contamination in the area. The oil companies have been working there for 40 years and they just simply dumped all the chemical substances they use to extract the crude into the rivers. The consequence is that many people die because of the high levels of mercury or cadmium in their bodies. An example of this drama is the protagonist of ‘Law of the Jungle’, José Dence Fachín. Seven of his brothers and sisters died because of these reasons. I think it is a type of ‘silent’ genocide of the Amazon indigenous people supported by the Peruvian government and the international oil companies. Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

Our plan was to be there for one month. However, to film a trial is something that you cannot plan. It was exhausting, everyday all the planning changed and it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The best option was to be calm and follow them everywhere. The problems came in many ways: the hard conditions of working in the heat and humidity of the Amazon jungle, which simply knocked us and the equipment out a couple of times, or the long process of the trial, which was driving down the morale of the accused and their lawyers. However, all of us knew that the only solution was to be there until the end. After the trial, the voice of the indigenous leaders became stronger. In 2012 the main politicians of Lima travelled to the damaged areas in the Amazon jungle. It was the first time in the history of Perú that something like this happened. In November last year, the oil company Pluspetrol was fined 7 million dollars and in December a United Nations delegate visited the area to report about the situation. The ‘Apus’, which means leader in Quechua, and their people keep on fighting for their rights. About the course of ‘Law of the Jungle’, it was shown in the Scandinavian television stations and presented in various festivals, such as the Grierson Awards last November. These are the British Documentary Awards and we were nominated for the Best Documentary in Contemporary Theme with the Oscar winner, ‘Searching for Sugarman’. ‘Law of the Jungle’ got the award, a big surprise for everyone who was there, especially because the sponsor of this category was the Shell oil company. Ironic, isn’t it?

How did you find South America compared to Europe as a place to live and work? I loved my experience in Perú and it would be fantastic if I could have more opportunities to work there. You need some time to get adapted to their lifestyle, things go slowly there and it’s impossible to fight against that. I was very surprised about the Peruvian food, they have a huge variety of dishes and all of them are delicious. What to do you like about Valencia? Valencia is a fantastic city to live in, full of activities. Basically I like to live in Valencia for three reasons: the sun, the sea and because you can move around on bicycle everywhere. Any plans for the future? It’s hard to say, the future doesn’t seems to be very optimistic now. However, everything can change from one day to another so just to be ready for the next chance. You can find more information about the situation in the Amazon jungle of Perú in: http://www.putumayo.be/es www. defensaindigena.org.pe/ My contact information is dieguito106@ hotmail.com

VALENCIA WORLD

NINÌ MANUJA Tell us something about linguistic background.

your

Thanks. My name is Ninì Manuja and I am French-Indian. I was born in India, 100 kilometres from Delhi, and brought up in France and Tibet. At that time, when I was a small kid, I wasn’t even able to speak but had four languages in mind….I don’t remember in which language I spoke for the very first time. So when people ask me what is my mother tongue, I don’t have any answer. Strange, no? My parents told me I started speaking very late in my life but that since I started to talk I have never shut up! I hadn’t had any idea that I was any good at languages until I travelled to South Africa. This trip gave me the opportunity to make so many friends and I started ‘funny talking’ with friends in their languages, and it developed into being able to communicate in their language. I moved to Greece for an exgirlfriend and again started speaking Greek, seems like it was already in my mind. And then I had to move to Italy for work, and I had enough time to study at university so I got a degree in Italian. I also started studying Portuguese. And after some years, another lovely person brought me to Spain and I wanted to speak Spanish, so I started exchanging my languages for Spanish. And now, most probably, love again will be the reason to learn another language (German).

How does living and working in Spain compare to France? I was working in France in a communications department while I studied. I also worked for Leroy Merlin in communications between India and France. Later I got lucky enough to find a company in which I was so comfortable that, after two years, I was in one of the highest and most responsible positions in the company. But love makes you blind so, without any thinking, I came to Spain where I actually lost my job as well as my love. But I fell in love with the city of Valencia and I started working in the kitchen of a restaurant. I will never forget that month but my knowledge of languages helped me and I went from the kitchen to being a host. And once more because of languages, I found a job in the marketing of a wine brand. Could you fill us in on your intercambio nights and any plans for 2014? Our Valencia group is the biggest one in the city and it is one of the biggest groups in Spain. We were seven people in beginning and now we are over 10,000 people! We have activities almost every day, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are the fixed ones: Tuesday at ‘Upper Club’ (Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 40), Thursday and Sunday at ‘Seven’ (Plaza Honduras, 34). On Fridays and Saturdays, we do picnics, excursions or a party related to languages or cultures and Wednesday is more for eating and visiting.

Then Valencia Language Exchange became bigger and bigger, so I had to decide between accepting the growth of my Group (VLE) or continue with my job. I decided to work in languages so I can continue with VLE activities and working at the same time. At the moment I have sufficient work, as Spain needs languages. In between my work and Valencia Language Exchange I hardly have time, sometimes not even for me! But you have to be lucky to find a job that you really like and you do it for your passion, not for money. “Work to live, don’t live to work.” Valencia Language Exchange is one of the best places you can ever find on earth, because it has friends, languages, love, passion, fun, and learning. I love Spain so I stayed here. We started different groups in different countries, three groups in Italy, three in Spain, one in India and one in France. In 2014 we are thinking of starting a new language exchange group and a big Tandem Festival to make people more aware of different languages. The festival will consist of languages, culture (gastronomic cuisine and fashion) and music from all over the world. Check out the website below to keep updated.
