Yes. In these troubled times, having fun in March makes more sense than ever. Fallas is a time to party, to forget the past, to live in the moment and to be cleansed of the negativity of winter as spring seeps into view. Valencia has long had a reputation for the kitsch, the erotic and the irreverent and Fallas is all of these things. Valencia was the last stand of the leftwing republican government during the civil war and, despite its long-established conservative local government, there remains a healthy disdain amongst Valencians for the rich and powerful… that is reflected in the acidic satire of the Fallas. Valencia is an enigmatic city that is both dynamic and staid, open and closed, a port with its back to the sea. Perhaps it is the happy mix of contradictions that has given Valencia the label of Mediterranean city par excellence. 24/7 Valencia is recommended by the local , national and international press. This includes The Times, The Guardian, Time Out, Let's Go, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, El País, Levante-EMV, Thomas Cook, Super Deporte, CNN.com and many more… In this special March edition, we have a host of Fallas photos brought to you by the excellent blogger from 'Not Hemingway's Spain' as well as an exclusive guide to Fallas by expert Lola

García. David Rhead & José Marín investigate Valencia´s Ferris Wheel that you can enjoy with all the family during this month of March. It is Valencia's very own London Eye! In Clubland, John Treacy checks out some clubs and the 'tribes' that frequent them. Check out an exclusive collection of '24/7 Valencia Party People' by professional photographer Cecile. At the back, you will find a packed agenda for clubbing and live music nights. Talking of music, we have a photographic homage to Lou Reed with shots of the legendary musician during concerts in the Valencia community as well as an interview with "Anti-Karaoke" star Rachel Arieff. Check out our listings for all you need to know about restaurants, clubs, live music, arts & theatre, classifieds and more. 24/7 Valencia is a magazine that started with nothing in the year 2000 and has grown, year by year, to become a magazine that is popular with locals, expats and visitors. We are a cosmopolitan team whose members span the continents. If you are new to Valencia we welcome you to this great and unique city. We liked it so much that we are staying for good! Rise Above the Fallas. Valencia’s Big Wheel In addition to all the other fun at Fallas, this year brings the giant 70-metrehigh Ferris wheel at the top of Avenida Aragon, looking down over the riverbed right next to where the castillos will be lighting up the sky each night during Fallas. Our reporters braved the heights and enjoyed the ride. The wheel is open all day from 11.00h till well into the night. We decided to go at siesta time to avoid the rush and paid 6€ each at the ticket office (4€ for children less than the stipulated 1.20 metres tall). During Fallas week (14 – 19 March), prices are set to rise by 1€. In true Fallas spirit (when any chance to unnecessarily block off a bit of road is gleefully taken), they’d already closed off one lane of Av. Aragon in anticipation of enormous queues which hadn’t yet appeared. In our case we managed to get a capsule to ourselves, but this might not be so easy later on in the month. The wheel was built two years ago by Hermanos Carrasco, a family business which has been working in the town of Buñol 40 km west of the city for nearly a century. Its 42 capsules, each one air-

conditioned and accessible for disabled users and carrying up to eight people, slowly rise up into the Valencia sky allowing great views of the city by day and the fireworks and lights by night. As you start to soar up above the buildings on Av. Aragon, you’re facing east and the first thing you do is ogle the penthouse apartments’ massive terraces and swimming pools which are invisible from the street. C/ Chile darts off in one direction and C/ Yecla in another. Then, when the Mediterranean Sea comes into view, you’re struck by how close the city is to its beach and port, something it’s often easy to forget. Stretching out before you is a bird’s eye view of the Palau de la Música and the Ciudad de las Ciencias just as you’ve seen them on the telly when they show the Formula 1. In the distance are the mountains of Castellón to the north and to the south, far beyond the cranes of the port, the Montgó mountain which stands 753 metres high shaped like the fist of a titan at the edge of the Gulf of Valencia. This big wheel started turning on 28 February and it will stay in place until 30

March. The biggest difference between the Valencia wheel and its other famous counterparts – the 135-metre London Eye, Berlin’s 175-metre Aussichtsrad or the oldest of the lot, Vienna’s Prater Riesenrad, built in 1897 – is that this wheel can be taken apart, packed up on three specially built lorries and sent off to wherever it is needed next. The wheel has already made an appearance at the Sanfermines in Pamplona, Seville’s Feria de Abril and the Pilar festival at Zaragoza. Back in the good old days of bottomless pit local government spending in 2006, the powers-that-be planned a permanent 100-metre-high wheel in the Parque de Cabecera. If the plans had gone ahead, it would probably now be standing half – finished, yet another lonely unused colossus standing as a tribute to bad planning and monstrous debt. In these more ‘cautious’ times, a wheel that can move around the country (to wherever the public are) seems a much better option. When you reach the top for the first time of your allotted three go-rounds (it all

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

takes around 18 minutes), it really sinks in how Valencia is completely locked in by high mountains on three sides, something that is usually obscured by the buildings of the city. It gives you a real sense of place and a certain sense of history. With no high – rise flats and urban sprawl this must have been close to what people looking out from the city walls would have seen in centuries past. All around, creeping up to the mountains, are the vibrant dark green orange groves and, to the south, the rice fields, dry and dusty brown at this time of year. On the way down, now facing West, the disappointment is that the Carmen and the old city centre are hardly in sight. To compensate, there are great views of the Alameda and the riverbed park snaking away from you to the left. You

also get to see the porticoed courtyard of the old cavalry barracks unseen by most of us for over three centuries. On display underneath the arches is a motley collection of what look like World War II – style trucks and vans in khaki green, a real illustration of the modernity of the Spanish army. You swoop down in your glass bowl over the Av. Aragon traffic and then round again twice more. At the bottom of the wheel they’ve set up a temporary bar in the middle of Av. Aragon. In what is a nice change from the usual Heineken or Águila beer tent, this place has a real Valencia feel. The bar is decorated with pictures of typical tiles from the region and the long wooden tables have plant pots with miniature orange trees and rosemary and lavender plants. Best of all, they

serve the local light ale – style beer, Turia Märzen, which has been brewed in the city since 1935. Who knows? In years to come the wheel might become as regular a fixture in Las Fallas as the mascletà. So while you’re sitting at your table sipping your beer or on one of the deckchairs outside, you can reflect that one day you might be able to say, “I went on that the first year it opened, way back in 2014.”

VALENCIA MUSIC

RACHEL ARIEFF Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. My main line of work is stand-up comedian, singer-songwriter, and producer of live comedy-oriented shows. I also work sometimes as an actress if a job comes along acting in movies. As far as my background, I have always been a vagabond. I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, went to college in Ohio, afterward lived in Austin, New York City, and Los Angeles. My college experience had a big influence on my future lifestyle because I did internships in Texas and California working in refugee shelters for Central Americans, most victims of wars or poverty, in large part created by U.S. foreign policy. I lived with these people, sleeping in the food pantry because there was no other room for me in the cramped shelter, sharing daily life with them and hearing their stories. These people taught me not just Spanish but how to live outside my comfort zone in another culture. They also opened my eyes to how incredibly fortunate I was. Years passed, I became a stand-up comic in Austin and continued it in New York and L.A. In 2004 I came to Barcelona on vacation, fell in love with it, and moved permanently from L.A. to Spain shortly afterward. I’ve been doing stand-up comedy and music for most of my adult life, but the difference is that now, I usually perform in Spanish. In fact, I now feel uncomfortable performing in English! My current comedy shows are called “Coñólogos: El Lado Ridículo del Erotismo” (“Cunnilogues: The Silly Side of Eroticism”) – a cabaret-style show with piano playing and monologue, in which I take the piss out of sex, romance and relationships, with a depressed exotic dancer doing striptease Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

vacantly onstage and in the audience – and a comedy show called “Planeta España”, which is basically about my observations and strange experiences living as a foreigner in this country. How does Spain compare to the USA in terms of work and play? Well, they definitely know how to play more in Spain. I don’t mean that as a put-down; just the opposite. For me, the purpose of life is to spend your time doing things that you enjoy and that matter to you. Unfortunately, the culture in the U.S. has lost a lot of that quality of life because people are forced to work constantly, at ever more menial jobs, just to survive. That said, I, like every guiri friend of mine, experience moments of profound grief when reminiscing over U.S.style professionalism and customer service ;-) But that’s a small price to pay for the life I live now.

barred attitude and celebration of creativity and individuality. We don’t have traditional karaoke equipment, with the videos and people staring at those screens. That forces the performers to be responsible for their performance and do their best to give the audience a show. People get onstage to strip away the façade and show who they really are, and the audience loves it. Sometimes they come with prepared numbers! And it doesn’t matter if they sing well or horribly.

As far as work, well... my work experience is pretty atypical. I have never, for instance, taught English or worked at any sort of professional company here since I moved here. I consider myself very fortunate because I’ve always worked doing what I love.

I think the audience – any audience, really – just wants to get to know that person onstage and to be able to relate them. That might sound like psychobabble but I really think that’s the key to success in showbiz in general. And my role is just that. I act as hostess / cheerleader / rodeo clown to keep the show moving, presenting each person as if they were a big star and offer my own prepared numbers throughout the show. These consist of celebrity parodies and weird performance-arty shtick with Bimbo bread and whipped cream. I try to keep things fun, creative and irreverent while making the performers feel good for getting onstage and exposing themselves. I also provide a costume table onstage so people can pick up wigs, boas, masks, hats, etc. to jazz themselves up for their performances.

What is Anti-Karaoke?

Any plans for the future?

I like to describe Anti-Karaoke as a parade of personalities, using the platform of karaoke and rock music. On the one hand, it’s superior-quality karaoke because of the excellent quality facilities, lighting, music tracks that sound like the originals, and sound system. The club, Rock City, is absolutely beautiful, thoughtfully decorated down to the last detail, with great prices and customer service. But apart from that, what makes Anti-Karaoke unique is its no-holds-

My plans are to keep doing exactly what I’m doing – my comedy shows and the AntiKaraoke – until I grow old and die here in Spain. Preferably in Andalucía. Sometime before that, find myself a torero or flamenco guitarist with long black hair and then life will be absolutely perfect. :-)

FOOD

Tomato Curry Cremà By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Bracing ourselves for the Fallas Festival and the grand finale of the cremá, it’s time to light our own fires, so we global hop once more to the spicy climes of India. Some time ago, on my first trip to India, I landed in Goa on a backwater spit of land only accessible by canoe. There was no other option but to eat with the family every night, or rather in front of the family on two high seats that were placed in front of the six sets of eyes. Watching as their two pasty guests battled their way through delicious but uncompromisingly spicy curry of either prawns or swordfish in a tomato and coconut sauce. There seemed to be no idea of varying the menu and what with the scary symbiotic companionship of the ecofriendly pigsty latrines(!), after a week of isolation curry ward we were ready to head for other climes. Yet the culinary lesson learnt from this experience was that it is the base of a curry that is really important. For a long time I struggled with watery sauces, until I discovered a magic solution. Easy but lengthy in process, it basically involves boiling down onions, ginger, garlic and chilli with spices which can be made in one big batch ready to add to all your tomate-based curry recipes. Like building any fire, as all boy scouts know, the base is the most important, so this is my Indian cremá, to ensure your curries are rich and smooth. Use this sauce to replace the tomates, onions, garlic and chilli in a recipe. So whatever tomato-based curry you are making, simply fry the meat or fish in the required spices and add this sauce to it. The spices you add will determine the heat of your cremá. On the 22nd of March, we will be holding a cooking course in English on samosas given by Nitu Chugani (www. nitudidi.com), so come along and learn more secrets of Indian cooking.

La Ola Fresca Tomato Curry Cremá Base For this recipe, you will need a heavy-bottomed sauce pan, a food processor and about 2 1/2 hours of cooking time. Ingredients (8 – 12 portions) • 2 large onions, coarsely chopped • 1 garlic bulb, peeled and chopped • 75 gm (3 oz.) root ginger, peeled and chopped • 1 green chilli, coarsely chopped • 1½ pint water • 400 gm (14 oz.) tinned tomatoes • 1 tablespoon tomato purée • 2 teaspoons coriander seeds, ground • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, ground • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1½ teaspoons turmeric • 3 tablespoons cooking oil

Preparation In the pan gently fry the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli until softened and slightly browned. Add the water and simmer gently with the lid on for one hour. Allow to cool a little with the lid off. Make sure the tomatoes are well blended, using a food processor if necessary. Fry the spices gently. Add the tomatoes and tomato purée and simmer for about 20 minutes. Using a food processor, blend the onion mix, making sure it is absolutely smooth.

Finally add the onion mixture to the tomato and other spices. Simmer for 20 minutes, removing any residue that comes to the surface.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Famous Spanish actors at el Molinón

EL MOLINÓN It’s coming up to my favourite time of year in Valencia. Arguably Europe’s biggest, and probably longest, street party – I am, of course, referring to the wonderful Las Fallas. It makes for an interesting discussion topic with native Valencianos, their reactions are always strong and run from absolute loathing to adoration. I have one friend who describes himself as a “Fallas hooligan” and whose family have been active falleros for generations (His grandfather was so enamoured of all things Fallas that his ashes were scattered on his falla for the Cremà! My friend even plans to be double burned himself, when the time comes!). Another friend, moments after I had sat down to write this, embarked on a 10 – minute rant... the gist of which was that Fallas is a four – day festival which brings the city to a near standstill for almost a month and “It’s just not right!” I kept quiet. I love Fallas. I particularly love the way the city gives itself over to it so wholeheartedly. Yes, it’s frustrating if you live near the centre like me and need your car on a daily basis to get around as parking is severely reduced, but it is surely worth it for the sheer spectacle that is Las Fallas. Just wait till you have been here a few years, you’ll soon tire of it – well, I have been and I still love it. We visited our restaurant of the month, El Molinón on the Friday of the weekend that kicks off Fallas and Valencia was buzzing and teeming with people. We arrived at this well-established Asturian sidrería / restaurant just before 21.00h, and before their real rush, to find it was already bustling. Roque, the very amiable owner and his staff were preparing for the onslaught. It’s worth mentioning at this point that they don’t take reservations unless you are a group. They will certainly take your name over the phone and add

you to a list which will give you preference over drop – ins, but you may still have a little wait. Roque and an assistant were behind the bar that runs down the right side of the restaurant, carving hams by hand, one a lacón (very much like an English roast ham) and a serrano. I love lacón, and a plate of it (5.50€), drizzled with olive oil, came to our table along with a great value Ribero del Duero (Baldíos, 12€ / bottle) which we had selected from the slate wall running the length of the other wall and chalked with the very good selection of wines from all over Spain. Wines can also be ordered by the glass at 2€ – 3€ and I also noticed that they offered a Malavida from Utiel – Requena for 13€ / bottle or 25€ / magnum. We felt a little guilty ordering wine over the traditional cider but no one batted an eyelid, and anyway we were to have a glass poured for us between our main course and dessert. Next came a strong Cabrales y sidre (goat’s cheese steeped in cider), if you like your cheese strong, be sure to order this and spread on the thick chunks of bread they serve to accompany it. Next came Mejillones Galleges vapor, (steamed mussels, 6.00€) huge and as fresh as fresh! These were followed by wonderful Xipirones a la plancha, (baby squid lightly griddled with garlic and drizzled with olive oil, 6.80€) perfectly cooked and quite exquisite. Another dish followed, a platter of Arenque ahumado (smoked herring), subtle and melt in the mouth. To finish off we had Txistorra de Irura, (best described as a lighter version of a chorizo sausage cooked in cider). I prefer these to chorizo and the crisp and juicy morsels did not disappoint.

great height, to aerate it. We got our glass perfectly poured before our desserts – a moist and sticky Pastell de avellanes (hazelnut tart) and Tarta de Santiago con orujo. It’s a cake made with almonds and served with a bowl of orujo, the fiery liquor usually served as a chupito at the end of a meal, set alight and poured over the cake. El Molinón celebrates its 30th birthday this year. It was opened by Roque’s Asturian parents and deserves its excellent reputation. It’s a busy venue with a bustling atmosphere downstairs and a smaller room upstairs which has a little outdoor courtyard space. The service is great, the staff very friendly and accommodating, highly recommended. Anti-Karaoke at Rock City

Created by the north-American comedian Rachel Arieff, Anti-Karaoke is an inimitable mix of rock concert, freak show, and Las Vegas spectacle. In contrast to traditional karaoke bars, Anti-Karaoke boasts a funny, charismatic hostess, an enthusiastic audience, a rock concert-quality sound system and stage, a repertory of over 500 of the best rock and pop hits (nearly all in English, of quality faithful to the original), a table full of costumes for onstage transformations, and a no-holds-barred, rock-n-roll attitude. During its eight years of existence in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid), Anti-Karaoke has gained the reputation as one of the most intense parties in Europe, with a loyal community of followers. Rachel as the Mistress of Ceremonies sets the irreverent yet friendly tone, and each night hundreds of people show up with the sense they’re taking part in something unique and unforgettable. A curious fact about Anti-Karaoke is the diverse range of renowned artists have made their cameos onstage, from Carmen de Mairena to members of bands such as L7, White Zombie, Royal Crown Revue, Mother Superior, Supagroup and The Bellrays. On the flip side, the A.K. has been the launching pad for a notable number of artists who have developed their performance chops singing week after week on the A.K. stage. Many have ended up forming successful bands and, in a couple of cases, appearing on T.V. talent shows. What is the secret to Anti-Karaoke’s success? Besides the abovementioned points, it’s the special ethic of the show: that what’s important is attitude, not aptitude. Anti-Karaokeans give every performance their all -- creating a true show for the audience to enjoy – yet they don’t tend

to take themselves too seriously, since half the fun lies in mistakes and imperfection! The results tend to be surprising, hilarious, at times epic, at times disastrous... but never, ever ordinary. In a nutshell, Anti-Karaoke is a creative, adventurous alternative to the typical urban nightlife offerings of discoteques, bars, and concerts. The inauguration of Anti-Karaoke in Valencia will be at Rock City club on Friday March 21st. See you there! Press quotes: “The energy is electric, there's enthusiasm galore and the sound system is incredible. The ‘fans’ will make you feel like a star, too.” –EasyJet InFlight Magazine “The Anti-Karaoke makes stars of those who have always dreamed of being one.” –Metro “For those who have experienced Anti-Karaoke, the show and its mistress of ceremonies, Rachel Arieff, don’t need an introduction. For those who haven’t, we can only recommend one thing: check it out!” –Público “A hilarious show, open to the participants who put a whole new spin on the classic karaoke format. “ -El Periódico www.antikaraoke.com https://www.facebook.com/antikaraoke info@rockcity.es |+34 961856966 C/. JASON WEBSTER territorial integrity of the country, which is clearly open to question when you’re dealing with regions that want to break away. The question is whether things would ever get that bad. But if you take the long view, you see very clearly that the history of Spain is one long pendulum swing between unity and break-up – stretching as far back as the Moorish period. In the past, only a strong authoritarian power at the centre has held things together. Now the country is a democracy (of sorts), so we’re in unchartered territory. I think the death of King Juan Carlos will be a key moment in Spain’s near future. What are your plans for this year?

JASON WEBSTER How does life compare in England to Spain in terms of family, work & writing? The writing is pretty much the same (it’s all going on inside my head…). Apart from the obvious differences, like the weather and price of alcohol, you notice in England how the social side of life is much more complicated. I think this is one of the greatest achievements of Spanish society – they have pretty much cracked the giving and receiving of attention. You walk down the street, you go to the shops, and people are greeting each other and are ‘open’. What this means is that it is far harder in Spain to become ‘atomised’, which is a good thing. What I like about England, however, is a higher level of optimism and can-do attitude than in Spain (in general, obviously). And intellectually I feel more at home in an Anglo-Saxon environment than in a Latin one. Could you tell us in detail about your new book, “The Spy with 29 Names”? It’s a biography of Spanish WWII double agent Juan Pujol – code-named Garbo by MI5. He lived an extraordinary life and had a huge impact on the outcome of the Second World War – and the history of Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

the 20th Century. And all through his incredibly powerful imagination and the wonderful stories that he used to make up. The Nazis believed all the lies that he fed them about the Allies and their forces. Even Hitler himself was fooled, and thought that Garbo was the head of a huge Nazi spy ring based in London. Pujol invented characters who became his ‘subagents’, including a Gibraltarian waiter called Fred, a mistress in the War Office and a pro-Aryan Indian poet called “Rags”. Without these invented spies and the false reports they sent to the Germans, D-Day would have been a disaster. It’s as simple as that. Pujol is a kind of picaresque hero – and very Spanish. What are the differences between Catalunya’s and Scotland’s fight for independence? The Catalan situation figures in the new Max Cámara detective book I’m writing, the fifth in the series (the fourth – “Blood Med” – is published in June). The main difference is that there is no threat of violence being used to prevent Scotland from breaking away from Britain. In Spain, where Catalan nationalism was one of the key causes of the Civil War breaking out less than 80 years ago, the stakes are higher. For many people – particularly in the military – the unity of Spain is sacred. And the Constitution states that one of the main functions of the armed forces is to defend the

I’m writing – I have to finish the fifth Max Cámara novel and then I have another non-fiction idea bubbling away. There are plenty of ideas – the problem is finding enough time to do them all. Interview by Owl www.jasonwebster.net

VALENCIA FOOTBALL In action In training

NEW SIGNINGS STARTING TO MAKE AN IMPACT FOR LOS CHÉS Valencia started February in fantastic fashion with a 3-2 victory at the Nou Camp to stun Barcelona and then continued to remain unbeaten in all their league and European matches throughout the rest of the month. After the victory celebrations of the Barça game had receded, the club turned their attentions to the home game with Real Betis. Struggling at the foot of the table, the Sevilla – based club were no match for a confident Blanquinegros, who ran out comfortable 5-0 winners in arguably one of their best performances of the season.

Manager Pizzi’s attacking brand of football is proving popular with the fans as Valencia’s goal difference went into the positive column for the first time this year. Valencia’s next game took them to Sevilla and a match – up with their former manager Unai Emery. To many supporters, Sevilla had cost the club a place in the Champions League on the final day of last season with a contentious 4-3 victory and the legacy from that game ensured a feisty encounter. A red card for Ricardo Costa early in the second half left the visitors a man short for 40 minutes. Marshalled by Senderos and the ever-improving Mathieu at the back, Valencia repelled attack after attack from Sevilla. A harsh penalty decision had Valencia fans biting their fingernails momentarily but a fantastic penalty save by Diego Alves from the Croatian Rakitić ensured the visitors came back home with a very satisfying point from Sánchez Pizjuán.

Debutant Philippe Senderos was a commanding presence in the early stages when Betis initially impressed, but Valencia soon took control and their dominance was rewarded when Jérémy Mathieu headed home from a corner in the 41st minute. Paco Alcácer then added a second three minutes later to put the home side 2-0 up at the break.

A trip to Kiev was next on the agenda but due to the recent troubles in the Ukrainian capital the game was relocated to Nicosia in Cyprus.

An excellent team goal finished off by Feghouli made the points safe just after the hour mark before Alcácer and January signing Eduardo Vargas added a fourth and fifth, respectively.

Valencia took full advantage and came back to Spain with a 2-0 victory thanks to second – half goals from substitutes Vargas and Feghouli.

This obviously benefitted Valencia as the hostile crowd they could have expected in Kiev was no more than a handful of fans in Cyprus.

Back on familiar soil the following weekend, Valencia entertained Granada at Mestalla. Despite a sub – par performance from the home side, they did what all good sides can do and eke out a victory when things aren’t quite going to plan. A goal down just after the restart, Valencia equalised with a goal from Paco Alcácer that had more than a hint of offside about it. The game was heading for a draw when Rúben Vezo stabbed the ball home in injury time from close range to give Valencia their first league double of the season. Vezo was signed in the January window from Vitória Setúbal and the teenager has already represented Portugal at the under – 19 level. He looks a real find despite having only played 12 games for Setúbal prior to signing for Los Chés. Kiev headed into Valencia next and the teams played out a drab 0-0 draw as the home team put in a professional performance to head into the last 16 of the Europa League. Somewhat surprisingly, Valencia will play the Bulgarian outfit Ludogrets of Razgrad who overcame Rome – based Lazio 4-3 on the two – leg aggregate. Valencia’s fabulous February was marred by a poor start to March which saw the team lose out to relegation – threatened Rayo Vallecano by a solitary goal in Vallecas. The team’s disappointing performance was compounded by the sending off of Barragán, who got his marching orders late in the second half.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

Valencia’s other club Levante have steadily gone about their business and have slipped under the media radar despite a productive February which saw them unbeaten in the four games they played. Home games resulted in a goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano and David Barral got the only goal of the game to give them victory over Almería. On the road they kept a clean sheet in a stalemate with the high – flying Real Sociedad and also shared the points at Valladolid in an entertaining 1-1 draw, thanks to a goal from Víctor Casadesús.

March also started in the best possible way with Las Granotas securing three points at Ciutat de Valencia by beating Osasuna. Diop settled the nerves early with a goal in the fourth minute and García Santos doubled the margin just before half time. The second half produced no further goals to leave Levante victors over the Pamplona club and nicely placed for an end – of – season assault on seventh place that will secure a Europa League

LIVE MUSIC IN VALENCIA

24/7 VALENCIA is like always, music, society and prejudged definitions of what people are like ,put together by the clothes that they wear and the people that they hang out with……..could they be soooooo wrong!!!

Chonis and Canis vs. Hipsters This month, peeps, I’m going to give you a lesson of the difference between the Chonis and Canis (male and female chaves / townies) and the newly formed Hipsters (colourful posh mods). Since I can remember, there have been two rival groups battling it out over time to decide on the best hot spots to visit around town and which ones they were going to make theirs. When all they really wanted to do was to show off their dance moves, clothes preference but, most of all, their personalities. The Mods (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc.) and the Rockers (Zeppelin, AC/DC, Hendrix), the Burghouses (Oasis type of coats) and the Sprayers (Blur type of coats), Grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Offspring) House Heads (Liquid’s “Sweet Harmony”, Jaydee’s “Plastic Dreams”, etc.), we could go on and on….. But in this article I have decided to talk about the present day situation between the Chonis/Canis and the Hipsters. It´s quiet funny really as these two groups have the basics of going out clubbing spot on; good friends, a little bit of cash to spend and a good old fashioned Spanish tan!!!::J))))))) The only difference between them both

Granted, there are stereotypes for a good reason, but fortunately or unfortunately (it depends on how you want to look at it) they are not always true, and in some cases are completely fabricated. There are sayings like, looks can be deceiving or never judge a book by its cover. During the day in office hours, I think that people actually listen to these types of phrases but sadly, during the night, these same people completely disregard them and treat people solely by first impressions or superficial appearances. Whether this is down to too much booze or simply because at that time of night people can’t be bothered to think that much and prefer to take the easy option and just become a sheep, I don’t know (I suppose life would be easier like that). Personally that is impossible for me, as I am too curious for my own good and refuse to believe that people are that boring. I choose to believe that everyone is interesting in one way or another, and it all depends on the questions you ask them and the amount of patience that you have (alcohol intake can work for or against you depending on the conversation and time in which it is being taken place;). Anyway getting back to the point I am trying to make, the other day I was in the middle of a conversation/discussion/ borderline argument between two groups of youngsters of why one group (Hipsters)wouldn’t go to nightclubs like Ánimas del Puerto (Edificio Docks, Paseo Neptuno s/n, Puerto de Valencia), TB Club (C/ San Vicente, 305) Superclub (C/ San Vicente, 95), and Mya (Av. del Saler, 5, in the City of Arts and Sciences) because in their eyes those places were full of Choni/Canis. And the reasons why the other group (Chonis/Canis) preferred not going to places like Barraca (Closing down party this Saturday 8th, Av. San Roc s/n, Les Palmeres, Sueca), Koh Tao (C/ Baix Vinalopo, 2, Mislata), La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2, Valencia) or Play (C/ Cuba, 8, Valencia) was because they were full of

Hipsters. In my opinion it is very easy to spot a Choni/Cani in the day because they stand out like a sore thumb with their big earrings and Adidas matching tracksuit top, bottoms and trainers. Lately at night, though, they have been starting to dress very similar to the so-called posh guys and girls, with their tight – fitting dresses and smart shirts. Nowadays it’s really difficult for me to tell the difference unless they open their mouths. On the other hand the Hipsters have a steady fashion, wearing lots of top brands and lots of loud colours......very easy to spot as they all wear the same type of glasses and the same style of hats....... so where does that leave me???? I like to wear shirts from time to time and I love my hats and glasses, too........am I a Hipster or am I a Cani???? I know both groups fairly well and have been to all the parties they were speaking about and I can tell you, hand on heart, that if they went there with the right group and were open – minded about meeting new types of people who didn’t dress the same as them, for sure they would have a great time. Of course tastes, would be an issue from time to time, but if I’m not mistaken, all of the places that they were talking about have a selection of rooms to hang out or dance in, and all with a wide range of musical genres. Some places the drinks are a few more euros than other places, but what’s a few more spondoolies between friends, hey? My conclusion is that no matter if you are a Choni or a Cani, a Hipster or a Hillbilly, Valencia nightlife will have something to offer you in all these clubs and many more. All you have to do is go out with the right attitude and your bezzie mates and bing bang bosh, you’ll have a wicked time!!!!!! Check out the new Jerusalem Club on C/ Convento de Jerusalem, 55 with resident Djs Nacho Marco, Dioni Sánchez and more. See www.jerusalemclub.es for more information. Feliz Fallas everyone and remember: If you don’t want to get burnt, get out of the kitchen, mofos!!! JTLTDX

COMMENT

Franco, el Generalísimo

frustration at the situation. However, since then I have realized that, paradoxically, the only country in the world where fascism triumphed for nearly 40 years till the peaceful death of the dictator faces confusion in grasping the true meaning of this word, perhaps precisely due to the propaganda it suffered for decades. This has become worryingly evident over the last year as the new generations of the ruling Popular Party (PP) have been seen happily posing in front of fascist and neoNazi symbols, with their political leaders half-heartedly and belatedly referring to such dangerous manifestations as “childish mischief” when challenged. A mayor of the same party has turned his town hall office into a little sanctuary to his admired Franco, with no recriminations from the party. Other mayors and local politicians of the same party have organised tributes to Spain’s fascist past. The Francisco Franco Foundation still exists; it received public money from the last PP government. Extreme right-wing groups are now using the perfect storm of the economic crisis to give hot meals to poor people at their HQs (presumably immigrants are not invited).

A Perfect Storm One of my first bizarre experiences with some people’s warped perception of politics in Spain occurred to me when visiting Barcelona just before the Olympic Games. As a backpacking student travelling on a shoestring, I was approached by a dapper-looking fellow my age asking me for money, as he appeared to be doing to all tourists in the belief that anyone from north of the Pyrenees had bags of money. On hearing my refusal, he called me a fascist. Perplexed, I had no idea why he had used that particular adjective to vent his Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

When the Francoist Spanish flag appears in demonstrations, PP politicians sometimes respond that this is simply the equivalent to those who carry the Republican flag at other demonstrations. They seem unaware that the Republic was a democracy (with a more advanced constitution than the current one drawn up with the help of Franco’s ex-henchmen) brought down in a bloody three-year coup by a military uprising amid crimes against humanity perpetrated following orders. Of course, after decades of hearing the same version of history told by the victors, such ignorance is not so surprising, but it is indeed very worrying when one sees such symbols of fascism and xenophobia that never died out rising again out of the perfect storm of a lengthy economic crisis. So where do these modern-day fascists come from, you may ask? Well, the truth is they never went away. Rather, the rest of the Western world simply forgot about them while Spain remained a useful political and military ally. So let’s take a little look at that forgotten history that many Spaniards are either unaware

of or reluctant to recall, and how its effects are still felt in today’s Spain. As happened with the re-conquest of Christians over the Moors and the Inquisition centuries ago, much property belonging to the defeated was appropriated by the victors after the Civil War. Anyone connected with the Republic or having expressed such opinions ran the risk of being thus accused, which could mean losing their property and even being shot. It needs little imagination, therefore, to understand how such accusations could be used to appropriate the property of others, not to mention the countless children who also disappeared or were torn from their mothers’ arms (Spain is second only to Cambodia with its ‘killing fields’ in numbers of disappeared citizens). And it is also little wonder that the victors’ descendants are reluctant to talk about this period of war and dictatorship, to teach it objectively in schools, explain it in the public or private media, or to relinquish their hold on economic, judicial and political power. The only time they may have feared the game was up came in the Transition. When the Berlin Wall fell, leaders such as Honecker of East Germany went Straight To Jail Without Passing Go. In Spain, however, where the dictatorship was never actually overthrown, the story was very different. In the years between Franco’s death and the declaration of the modern constitution, Manuel Fraga, an ex-minister of Franco’s, held the position of Interior Minister. This was the man who coined the terms “The street is mine” and “Spain is different” (the latter phrase was used to justify the dictatorship). With the arrival of democracy, he went on to form the Popular Alliance party with his old colleagues and supporters, which later morphed into the Popular Party that is in power today. Such choices of names are not coincidental from the man who once did such a great job as the dictatorship’s Minister of Information (the Popular Front was once the name of the democratically elected alliance overthrown by Franco). The party has since taken to calling itself a party of the centre and accusing its leftwing opponents of acting like fascists. Little wonder, then, that so many citizens are confused as to the true meaning of the word, or the differences between left

twentyfoursevenvalencia 43

and right, communism and capitalism, democracy and fascism. A recent survey showed that nearly two thirds of Spaniards consider themselves to be generally in the political centre, yet there is no centre party. Those who once supported firing squads now vehemently say they defend the constitution, having apparently changed their lifelong opinions completely the day after Franco died. Again, this is not surprising when one considers that they helped write their own amnesty into it. People allegedly responsible for repression and torture during Franco’s years and the dirty war’s murders afterwards gained promotions during the Transition and took charge of important posts in supposedly democratic institutions, including the judiciary. With Spain tentatively flexing its new democracy with great caution so as not to upset those yearning for a return to the past (there was an attempted coup in 1981), the true economic, judicial and media power remained largely in the same hands, and even in the same families. Let us look at how these exponents of the ‘extreme centre’ have done so with these pillars of power. First, there is the land itself. There have been 800 cases of corruption linking politicians and the construction sector to bribery, influence-peddling and the like. Not that such cases ever get anywhere. The Popular Party’s governments have made it possible to reclassify many types of land as “urbanisable” (i.e. it can now be built on). Government-subsidised homes (for poor people) fell from 40% to 5% as town councils preferred to sell the land to big developers. House prices rose by 7½ times in 10 years, mostly caused by the rising cost of the land itself as a result of such laws. If you have a friend or relative in the local council and a plot of land to sell, you may find its value miraculously multiply as it is reclassified in return for votes or more shady rewards. The Spanish Church, another great beneficiary of Franco’s, has taken advantage of a law passed by the PP allowing it to freely appropriate about 4,500 properties. Nearly all the illegal constructions in recent years were also ‘regulated’ by the present government as soon as it took office.

Of course, the property market also needs the banks to function. Voilà: the government recently changed banking regulations, too, introducing the term “honourable” instead of a lack of criminal antecedents as a prerequisite to become a board member of a bank. This now makes sense on seeing the amount of them passing through the courts who can now keep their jobs. It is surprising how many of the banksters in the dock blithely claim complete ignorance when explaining their lack of control over dodgy six-zero dealings, when presumably it was precisely their job to control this. The billions of euros spent by the EU to rescue Spain went entirely to the banks in their hands, while such expendables as healthcare, dole and education are still facing cuts, with pensions rising below inflation and the already pathetic minimum wage being lowered to meet the EU’s belttightening demands in return. Strange how Angela Merkel doesn’t demand the same medicine for her own country’s economy, which left its economic crisis behind long ago without the need for such measures. Somebody has to serve the German tourists beers and change their bed sheets, I suppose. A bitter joke I heard on Spanish radio exemplifies this: “Three renowned scientists are at a table in a restaurant: a German, a Brit and a Spaniard. The Spaniard says, ‘Good evening. Can I help you?’” This is not so far from the truth: the European Physical Society named a Spaniard as the best young European physicist, yet he can’t even get a grant in Spain. The constant excuse given for the cuts, tax hikes and privatisations that the PP promised they wouldn’t touch is the economic situation they encountered when they came to power (apparently they weren’t aware of the worldwide recession, though they certainly blamed Zapatero for it when in opposition). Sometimes a storm is the perfect time for looting. The economic excuse is constantly repeated in the government-controlled public media. The head of Spain’s public TV and radio is a minister’s wife, and its audience has plummeted along with its hard-earned international prestige over the last two years since the PP government came to power. It has been warned by the European Commission about its public TV journalism, along

with Serbia and Ukraine. The Madrid and Valencia TV channels have suffered a similar fate through heavy-handed political manipulation by the same party, nepotism, junk TV and outright plunder, with the indebted Valencian body, Canal 9, disappearing altogether. In fact, a recent national survey discovered that journalists are now the second worstrated professionals in Spain. Bottom place went to judges. Well, surely they had to save the wounded banking system, didn’t they? Actually, no. According to the Bank of Spain, Spanish banks received nearly €100 billion in aid in 2009 alone. Meanwhile, they have gone from losses of over €3½ billion to profits of nearly €10 billion during the economic crisis. Yet the credit is still not flowing from them to the economy, with Spanish business having to borrow increasingly from foreign lenders. However, now that the building bubble has burst (with none of the ridiculously large mortgages being written off even after small homeowners lose their home), the legalised mafia now has many other lucrative ventures. It is a suspiciously common practice in Spain for prominent government politicians to take up the executive post of ‘adviser’ (i.e. a fat cheque for doing very little) on the board of multinationals and public, nationalised companies after leaving office. Some such companies have previously been privatised (i.e. appropriated) by the same people when they were in government. No public asset is safe in these times of economic storm, be it in healthcare, education, power generation or the media and communications. How is it possible for all of these disreputable conflicts of interest to arise? The explanation for this lies in that other fundamental pillar of power, the judicial system, which in Spain seems anything but impartial, the Valencia region once again providing perhaps the most notorious examples. But for that we shall need an entire article. Watch this space. El Gazza

FALLAS GUIDE 14 Are you interested in folklore? Tradition? Big dresses? If you are, stick around. Valencia has all that and more during the celebration known as Las Fallas. Read this and consider yourself armed for the festivities.

LAS FALLAS During the second week of March, you’ll see these large sculptures being set up at practically every street corner. Anything can be represented in a falla; the Ten Commandments, the plight of the crippled, world peace or belly-button lint. These are then ceremoniously burnt (in La Cremà) by proud firemen on the night of March 19.

EL CASAL

LAS FALLERAS

Think of a friendly neighbourhood association (again, at every street corner) whose main mission, apart from setting up its falla, is to wake you and all your neighbours up at 4.00 am. You’ll finally get back to sleep only to be awakened again by its morning marching band (La Despertà). You can avoid this by joining a casal yourself, allowing you yourself to become the object of your neighbour’s hatred.

Watch out! You could be knocked over by one if you’re not paying attention. More than just a big dress, the fallera’s costume is the Ne Plus Ultra of traditional fashion wear. Covered by enough lace, brocade and satin to bury a man (or fallera), these brave women take part in all the city’s festivities. You’ll see them representing their casals by marching in parades, posing for pictures, making paellas on the street and having nervous breakdowns, smiling all the while. Acute observers will make the comparison between the fallera’s hairstyle and a certain science fiction film character, but the similarity ends there. These are Valencian Earth girls, born and bred.

LA MASCLETÀ For hard-core Valencianos (nearly all of them). City Hall, not wanting to miss out on the fun, holds its own circus of noise every afternoon at 2.00 pm during Fallas. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is stocked with enough firecrackers to blow up a small country, which are then all lit. Loud explosions leading to a crescendo of painful sonic booms typify a good mascletà. Generally lasting five to ten minutes, the experience will leave you with gunpowder and sulphur in your lungs and bleeding ears, but hey, who cares? You’re only young once.

THE NIGHTLIFE A misnomer, actually. The nightlife lasts all day and night for the first three weeks of March. Valencia doesn’t sleep, and if you think you will, you are mistaken. My advice is to do what bar, pub and restaurant employees do; take copious amounts of stimulants and stay awake. There’s no point in sleeping. No point! Lola García
