The art of living and Valencia in spring are not altogether unrelated. Blues skies, welcome sunshine, terraza life, fresh fruit at Mercado central, happy days and balmy nights. Mediterranean Spain doesn't really make sense without the sun and Valencia is very much a city of light and laughter. It's a place with a tendency not to take anyone or anything too seriously. Frivolous? Yes, sometimes, but in a good way... Valencia is also known as the land of music and we have treats for you in this special April edition with an exclusive interview with the owner of the legendary Black Note Club as well as an interview with up and coming Valencian band 'Elíal'. Clubbers can ponder the advantages of being single or in a relationship in 'Clubland' and Marilûz Vergaz goes in search of her perfect man in 'Woman'. 24/7 Valencia is now in its 14th year and is recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, Time Out, El País, Let's Go, Rough Guide, Business Traveller Magazine, Levante EMV, Super Deporte, Thomas Cook, Lonely Planet, Footprints and many more... In Valencia books, we interview longterm Valencia resident Chris Wright, who has written a book about the mysterious Maestrazgo region of Valencia & Aragón. Talking of nature, we also have exclusive photos of Valencia gardens by 'Not Hemingway's Spain'. In Valencia football, expert John Howden takes a look at the

ups and downs of Valencia Cf as well as Levante UD. These are strange times for the city's major club as a sale to a big investor is imminent, which could turn Valencia CF into of one Europe's major teams if things go to plan! However, these days, you just never can tell... Check out the agenda at the back for loads of clubbing nights and live music. See our listings for plenty of up-to-date arts & theatre news as well as plenty of info on café-bars, clubs, traditional pubs, restaurants, tapas bars, shopping and more. Food lovers can enjoy a seductive tortilla recipe by Helen Westwater of La Ola Fresca as well as a restaurant of the month review of 'nueva cocina española' at the hip & trendy Lalola, by the cathedral. '24/7 Valencia' is formed by an international team of writers, designers and photographers who truly love Valencia. We hope you enjoy your stay here. Many thanks to all our contributors, readers and advertisers who have supported us over the years. Have a great spring! Love and peace.

“I can see clearly now, the rain is gone, I can see all obstacles in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day.” (Johnny Nash)

Erin Corine ‛Marisol’

BLACK NOTE IN VALENCIA Germán Valenzuela has been running one of Valencia’s best known live music venues, Black Note in C/ Polo y Peyrolón, for more than 20 years. We spoke to him about how the club got started and how things have changed over the years. How did you get started with Black Note? Who else was involved in the project? We opened in September, 1993. Four friends got together with the idea of giving some support and a platform for live music and especially black AfroAmerican music and world music. That is everything from jazz, blues, R&B, soul and funk to rock ‘n’ roll, swing, fusion, and acid jazz, also taking in reggae, bossa, Latin, boogaloo, flamenco and Celtic up to the more modern styles like groove and free style. How did you come up with the name Black Note? It’s a play on words in Spanish. Nota negra is a term used academically meaning a bad mark, a low academic grade, which more or less summed us up! It’s also a little tribute to the Blue Note record label, which was a massive influence on us musically. Why live music?

Live music has its own special energy. If it is in a small, up – close venue, all the better, because the interaction between the musicians and the audience is absolute, it creates a great atmosphere, a real feel. You can see every detail of the interpretation of each piece, the musician gets the feedback from the audience at the same time and at the end of the gig everyone is together at the bar celebrating the event. We started to organise gigs every evening starting in 1993. For that reason, we’ve attracted very different types of people and consequently we have a wide range of customers with respect to their taste in music, age and habits. We ourselves love going to gigs and live music is a great addition to nightlife in the city. The live scene in Valencia has always had really good musicians, and we’ve taken advantage of and promoted that fact. Were you aware in those first years that you would become a key point of reference in the live music scene in Valencia? In truth, no. Twenty years ago we hoped it would be a long – term project but we could never have imagined how well things would have turned out. It’s

been great, the experiences, the friends we’ve made and the constant evolution and innovation involved in the business have given us a lot of satisfaction. Of course, there have also been setbacks and bad times. As a music lover yourself, which concerts in Black Note have you enjoyed the most? It’s difficult to answer that because there have been so many. I really enjoyed Andy Summers (the Police), Buddy Miles (Jimi Hendrix’s drummer), gigs by Ben Sidran and of course, the big bands and all the funk – soul gigs. How do you get into contact with the bands? Through managers, record companies, other musicians, friends, social networks, personally in the Club itself, or sometimes I make specific trips looking for bands to contract. In all the time you’ve been involved in live music, have there been any gigs that have been more demanding than usual? Are some bands more picky about sound, lighting, acoustics, times for the concerts, etc..? In general the bands are usually really nice. Playing in front of an audience like

ours of around 200 people, the artists normally give everything and just have a good time. The complaints and big demands are usually left for the big tours and big arenas where they are more distant from the public!! And anyone that has been especially easy to work with? The local scene is a really friendly scene, everybody likes joining in with the jam session. There’s always someone ready to help out to solve any problems that might occur, find an amp, fill in when someone doesn’t turn up, etc… Are you yourself a musician? How did your relationship with the world of music start? I’m not a musician. I love music, I understand it and I enjoy it but I’ve never reached the level of being able to call myself a musician. I started DJing, playing vinyl, when I was 15, standing in for people in various different places. Since I was 18 years old, I’ve worked

continuously in different discotheques in Marbella, Alicante, Castellón and Ibiza. I always combined it with selling records and managing different places. At the moment, it’s managing and representing bands and artists which take up most of my time. We imagine that your clientele has changed somewhat over the years. What have been the most noticeable changes? Changes are logical, they obey the market and, in our case, the nocturnal habits of the people of this city. The average lifespan of a relationship with a customer for a club like ours is between one and four years. It goes with the cycles of life (studies, friends, work, relationships, family, travel, finances, etc...), all these changes in people’s lives modify their habits and preferences. How have you had to adapt to stay at the forefront of the local music scene?

I think it’s important to study new trends and analyse different musical preferences in different decades and generations, how people appreciate music from the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, for example. We’ve tried to respond to the recession by transmitting an idea of authenticity and transparency to our customers. Going for quality at an affordable price. Finally, do you think there’s still a market in this city for live music? I believe there is!! We have a lot of new, up-and-coming artists here and a lot of established ones. What’s more, we attract a lot of good musicians from outside who are drawn in by the Euro – Mediterranean character and especially the ‘outdoor’ way of life (sun, beach, art, friends..). A little bit of cash, just for what you need......and you’re off!

VALENCIA MUSIC

ELÍAL Tell us about Elíal and your musical influences. Elíal was founded in Valencia by Alberto Amar and Elim Rufat. Since releasing our first EP in 2012 we haven’t stopped playing live, as a duo and as a band since we joined up with Hugo Caminero on drums and Dani Vidadany on guitar. Both the press and the public have remarked on the innovative character of our music and the personality of the band, which I suppose reflects our numerous influences and constant experimentation. The music of Elíal navigates towards an experimental pop – rock in Spanish which unites analogue instruments Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

with the electronic. The atmospheric sounds take the listener on ‘a journey’ and the words describe the trip. Amongst our influences you will find Radiohead, the Beatles, Sigur Rós but you’ll also find that we are very influenced by the film/cinema work of David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch or Michael Gondry. Take us through the songs on your EP. 1. Sed 04:00 2. Rama 04:27 3. Dinámica 04:11 4. Origen 04:30 5. Anomalía 05:44 Our first EP has a real electronic base. We consider music as another voice

and voices as another instrument. All the songs on the EP have a definite structure and logic, but we like people to make their own conclusions, not just about the voices but also the rest of the atmospheric sounds. As a debut, it very much reflects the intentions of the band, especially the combination of electronic and analogue sounds. However, evolving our sound is very important to us and we are now finishing a new record which we believe is more honest, more true, more us. We’ve always been interested in the more poetic side of electrónica. On the first EP, the band has a more mechanical electronic sound and we are looking to reflect on this electronic language in a more crafted and minimalist way over time. How do you find Valencia and Spain

twentyfoursevenvalencia 11

ELÍAL

to play music live and for recording? When we are making music we don’t know where we are and take off to another planet. The state of culture in Spain in general is like a candle in a wardrobe, the candle is constantly going out because it has no oxygen but there are a few freaks who try to light the candle. We hope one day to open the wardrobe and that everything will flow. Any plans for Elíal in 2014? We’re really happy because the band have just come back down from the mountains of Cuenca, where we have just recorded our first LP with the great producer, Suso Sáiz. It’s called ‘Dentro’ and it’s an album that was recorded live, putting our priority on the

moment, the place it was recorded and the people involved. There are songs and lyrics but also noises, breathing sounds and hidden music in a record that is very much alive. In these times of super-productions where it’s normal that software ‘perfects’ songs, we decided to make an album without artifice, looking for the most honest way possible and letting ourselves be swept along by nature and the emotions of the moment. We hope to release the album soon and to present it in many places locally, nationally and internationally. facebook.com/elialband www.elialband.com

FOOD

Darle la Vuelta a la Tortilla By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Hallelujah, Spring is here! A hop, skip and a jump to beach times and with Easter eggs all around, we darle la vuelta a la tortilla! As you embark on making a tortilla, some of your Spanish friends may ask if you are using onion. If you say yes, they will nod their heads and say encouraging things, but with a mysterious, slightly knowing look. Yet if you say, “No, no onions”, they’ll bound around the room, joyfully, with a hearty “Sí, sí, sí”. Definitely no onions in this recipe then! A tortilla should be a neatly rounded form, with a golden surface and softly welcoming centre. Cooked to point of perfection, a true tortilla should be pure seduction that lends to the fantasy of writer Isabelle Allende – to eat it with an unclothed Antonio Banderas! So with the help of our prize winner chef de tortillas, Natacha Melgar, having “broken the eggs, now we should make the omelette”. Preparation First peel the potatoes. You can either dice them so that they break down more or, as I slightly prefer, slice them thinly so you can see the layers of potato within the omelette. Heat the frying pan to moderately hot with a goodly amount of oil and gently fry the potatoes, without letting them turn brown. We need juicy fried potatoes, not crisp ones. Set aside to cool. Separate the eggs and whisk the egg whites. This is a revolutionary method and a good trick that adds fabulously to the volume of your tortilla. Sprinkle the yolks with ground sea salt. When the potatoes have cooled sufficiently, incorporate all the ingredients together.

Tortilla de Patata Ingredients • 5 medium size free range eggs (camperos) • 4 medium potatoes, peeled • Virgin olive oil • Salt • Medium to small size frying pan (about 20 cm) with high edges

Saturday 19th

Now heat a lightly oiled pan to mediumto-high heat. Add the mixed ingredients and lower the temperature. Cook until it starts to set and you can see little bubbles start to appear. Then comes the tricky part – using a large plate, turn the omelette over and cook on the other side. When you have turned it over, make sure the sides are nicely tucked in to keep that perfectly rounded form. Cook for a little longer, being careful not to overcook or burn. Turn out on to clean plate. Great served hot or cold.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LALOLA

artichoke. Very good and a nice marriage of flavours.

back. The next will probably be around Easter. Check their Facebook for details.

LaLola, our restaurant of the month, was a welcoming experience. We arrived a little late (surprise, surprise) to be greeted at the door by a smiling and charming lady who we later found out went by the name of Lydia. I apologised for our tardiness and she laughed it off, saying that she knew we had booked but didn’t actually know for what time! We were with friends and had previously decided amongst us that we would all order different dishes to better experience LaLola.

D had an excellent Corvina con trinxat (patata, bacon, coliflor) y aire de naranja, perfectly cooked slices of sea bass on a bed of potato and cauliflower, topped with crispy bacon and a foam of orange.

Tim Birch

We ordered a bottle of white and a bottle of red wine, both with the name Las2ces and from Requena, which we had tried and enjoyed for the first time with tapas at a restaurant nearer to our home. Great value at 15€ a bottle. To get our taste buds working, we were presented with a little amuse bouche of creamy white cheese with some little crackers. Lydia and Jesús, the owner of La Lola, had pre-chosen three starters for us, the first of which was Sorpresas (Surprises), neatly parcelled in filo with a creamy cheesy centre, sitting on a bed of mango and fruits of the forest coulis. I will tell you no more to maintain the surprise! Next came Cola de langostino, a martini glass filled with a lovely soft potato puree and pieces of langoustine topped with crispy fried slivers of leek. For our final starter, Lingote de foie y turrón, two small slabs of mousse de foie had been mixed with turrón, topped with crushed crispy corn, and served on black sesame toast. Our main courses were individually chosen. J and I decided to share the Arroz Meloso de rape, calamar y alcachofa, a moist rice with the day’s ingredients of monkfish, squid and

JJ chose the melt-in-the-mouth Rabo de toro en su jugo, con puré de chirivía y chips, bull’s tail in a rich gravy served with parsnip mash and a few crisps. Our dessert was a perfect glossy white hemisphere of mousse filled with strawberries floating on a red coulis, perfectly matching the stark white walls and large red panel of white circles. We had coffees, infusions and mistela (Valencia’s famous crisp dessert wine) to finish.

LaLola C/ Subida del Toledano, 8 (by the Cathedral and Plaza de la Reina) Telephone: 96 391 80 45 E-mail: reservas@lalolarestaurante.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ lalolavalencia Open Monday – Sunday 13.30h – 15.30h, 20.30h – 23.30h Menú del día 15€ – Two tapas or salad, three rice choices daily, dessert Evening menú (great value at 25€) – Appetiser, three tapas, main course, dessert

The food at LaLola is not only carefully served and beautifully presented, it is also cardio – friendly as the menus are put together with the help of the Heart Association of Valencia. There are also gluten – free options available at all sittings (a logo on the menu promises LaLola is a celiac – free holiday destination!) and the restaurant also has the ‘Q – Calidad Turística’ award. The wine list is pretty extensive and they are proud of the Valencian wines on offer. Prices for wine start from 14€ per bottle, by the glass from 3.50€ and, unusually, one can have cava by the glass (4€). LaLola is 12 years old this year but they keep up their standards. Service throughout our meal was friendly, slick and professional and groups are welcome. Entertainment has always been on offer at LaLola, their flamenco nights are famous. Lovely idea to have an excellent dinner and watch some lovely dancing. We’ll definitely be going Photos © Xaro Castellà. / Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

For starters, you can choose between a slice of omelette, a cool gazpacho from Andalusia, fried squid, grilled cuttlefish or their patatas bravas, which are fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and spicy tomato sauce. A healthy option is the Ensalada Valenciana with lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, corn, egg, tuna and carrot. VALENCIA BOOKS

CHRIS WRIGHT Where were you born? I was born in Leicester in the Midlands. After my National Service in the R.A.F., I became a policeman in Exeter, Devon before moving on to Wimbledon, London, where I became a medical representative with a correspondence with a jazz magazine called ‘Jazz News’. Naturally I met and interviewed various giants of jazz, such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Brubeck, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and Louis Armstrong, who appeared at the Hammersmith Odeon. Jazz at the Philharmonic with Ella Fitzgerald was another one, they were definitely the good times for me. In Wimbledon, I used to have a few pints down at the Coach & Horses pub with the actor Oliver Reed, a right drinker and charmer with the ladies. I remember a few parties in his company, too. It was the early ‘60s and you could see that he had star quality even then. When did you first come to Spain? I arrived for the first time in the late 1950s. Spain, from what I knew about it, had an ‘enigmatic’ label attached to it

and was governed by a dictator. As most of us knew in those days, dictators were usually associated with South American countries and not in Europe. My first visit was made interesting because we flew from Dover to Bordeaux with my Austin A40 car inside. Tossa de Mar was our destination and it really was a surprise. Unmade roads, many bars and restaurants, sheets from the small hotels laid out to dry on the beach held down by stones. No fridges, so ice was delivered by carts in sacks and the sewerage pumped out to sea at night. It was a great time with parties involving pop music recordings, both English (the Beatles) and Spanish, and drinks at almost giveaway prices. All right, so there was a police presence and beaches were strictly out of bounds at night by the reasoning that smuggling was still popular with boats bringing in cigarettes and other items. Also, my English girlfriend and I were stopped by the local police because she wore the popular 1950s skirt that spread out like a hoop and a blouse that exposed a small portion of her midriff. “Go back to the hotel and put something respectable on or you will be expelled from the town,” said the policeman. It was later in Barcelona that we witnessed a couple being fined for kissing each other goodbye. That was, I discovered, causing a scandal! Comparing Spain of 2014 to the past, I would say that the Spanish are not as happy as I remember. In general, I suppose with all the problems with taxes and the economic crisis, I find that people are unhappier than before. Back in the early ‘70s people were more open in Spain, people would invite you into their homes for a drink and some olives. Although quite shy, I found in terms of hospitality that country people had more education in the way they treated you than city people.

Singer, guitarist, writer, traveller, raconteur

So how did you arrive in Valencia, where you have lived for nearly 40 years? Well, I was recommended by a friend of mine who ran a casino near Farnham, Surrey in England so initially I came to Cullera in the Valencia region. I opened a pub there but sold it after the Ford motor Car Company began production and most of my customers, engineers who had put in the machinery, moved into the city of Valencia. After a disastrous attempt at opening another pub failed, I also moved to the city of Valencia and into agency work such as jewellery, porcelain, ceramics, etc. How did your latest book “The Last Spanish Secret” come about? This all began when a veterinarian friend told me about a small, almost hidden village to the north in the Castellón part of Valencia called Castelbisbal (translated as ‘The Bishop’s Castle’ ) that only had eight permanent inhabitants and a river called Linares. This was around 30 years ago and his story stirred my imagination so much that my wife and daughter made the trip up there. From Valencia city, it is a car journey of one hour and 40 minutes. We found the battered wooden sign some three kilometres from Linares de Mora where I would be nominated, some years later, as ‘Hijo Predilecto’, or

Chris with daughter Samantha the village’s favourite son. The road, or rather dirt track, led us to Castelbisbal and here we spent some time visiting the quaint and interesting church whose priest at that time suffered from a stutter that had all the very small congregation on the edge of their seats. The village bar was in somebody’s house and the coffee brewed over a camping gas bottle. There was also an open – air place where the women could do their washing alongside a barbeque for use if anyone wished. It was all very pleasant and stimulated me to see more of the area. What else did you discover in the area? Mountains have always attracted me and so we set about exploring the nearby Maestrazgo region over the years. Sure, I had read books by Gerald Brennan and Chris Stewart, but these were books about Andalusia and there was nothing written by an Englishman about the most depopulated area of western Europe, the Maestrazgo. There are only 3,700 inhabitants. There are villages that have changed little in 100 or more years. I discovered the whereabouts of what was the second paper mill in the whole of Europe, the first being constructed near Xativa on the Guadalupe or Wolf River. Other beautiful villages like Mirambel won a prize for ‘Best Reconstructed Village’ out of 500 European applicants in the year 1982 and the remains of masías. These are fortified farm houses or manor houses which have castle – like towers attached to them in case of robbers or such. Out of nearly 100 in the area, only

some five are now inhabited. Has the area suffered in any way with the Civil War in Spain? Of course, but in these mountains the people are accustomed to wars. After all, they had the long war of succession to the crown. The leader of the rebels was a Ramón Cabrera, known as the Tiger of the Maestrazgo. Finally, his army of rebels crossed the Pyrenees and the 7,000 soldiers and their families emigrated to the U.S.A. where they fought on the rebel side in the Civil War. Meanwhile, Ramón Cabrera finished up in England, where he married a Marion Richards whose father was a rich merchant and judge. Their home was the now prestigious Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, England. E-mail: elingles21@hotmail.com Tel: 634 356 223 facebook Chris Wright Interview by Owl

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

EUROPA LEAGUE THE GOAL The encouraging performances and results from February were neutralised by dropped points and unexpected losses in March, as Valencia’s inconsistency throughout the season was once again cruelly exposed. The club started off the month with a loss at Rayo Vallecano and then followed up that performance with a home draw against Athletic Club of Bilbao. Torrent-born Paco Alcácer opened the scoring for Los Chés before a former favourite of the Valencia fans, Aritz Aduriz, squared things for the Basque side early in the second half. No further goals ensured a point each for both sides in a highly entertaining game. After the home game with Bilbao the side took the long trip to Razgrad to take on the Bulgarian side Ludogorets. A thoroughly professional performance saw the visitors come back to Spain three goals to the good.

Valencia were sitting comfortable and as good as through to the quarter – finals of the Europa League. Winning this competition may be the best chance the team have of playing European football next year, as the required seventh place in La Liga is looking increasingly distant with each game that goes by. Valencia headed next to Real Sociedad, who themselves have aspirations of European football again next year, and it was the northern club that took all the points thanks to a fantastic Agirretxe header. The return fixture with Ludogorets was relatively academic but, for the record, Los Chés won 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Alcácer, and their reward was a two – legged tie with Basel of Switzerland in April. Valencia’s fifth game in 15 days brought local rivals Villarreal to Mestalla. Javi Fuego scored a brace in the first half and, although Giovani dos Santos halved the deficit late on, Los Chés clung on to record their only league win in March.

Barragán, Fede and Senderos were on target, with the only blot on the visit being the sending off, early in the first half, of Seydou Keita.

A trip south was next on the agenda as the club travelled to Almería. The visitors got off to the best possible start when Keita scored one of the fastest goals ever recorded in La Liga after just eight seconds.

The numbers were equalled late on in the second half when Quixadá was sent off for the home team, but by then

When Chilean international Eduardo Vargas doubled the lead just after the half hour mark, it seemed the points

would be heading back up the AP-7. However, two goals within two minutes in the second half gave the Andalusian side a well-earned draw. Valencia did not learn their lesson in their next game against Getafe and again squandered points from a winning position. A bullet headed by Vargas from a Parejo corner gave the home side an early lead but again their rivals scored two goals in as many minutes to overtake the blanquinegres. The fans frustration at another lacklustre performance was compounded when Pedro León added a third a minute from time and celebrated by blowing kisses at the Curva Nord. Valencia captain Mathieu took exception to this and gave the Getafe player a slap in front of the referee, which got him a second yellow and his marching orders, meaning he will miss the next few games as a result. The white handkerchiefs were in abundance at the end of the game, but hopefully some cash will be available for manager Pizzi in the near future as the search goes on for a buyer for the club. Off the field these rumours about the sale of Valencia CF have been going on for months. Initially Singapore businessman Peter Lim seemed to be in prime position but now he seems to have been overtaken by Wang Jianlin who owns the Dalian Wanda Group.

Now regarded as President Salvo’s preferred buyer, the second richest man in China was a visitor to Valencia recently and this potential collaboration was given further credence when his company agreed to a deal to send 20 Chinese youngsters to Paterna (Valencia’s training ground) to take part in various ‘Academia GloVal’ programmes. Valencia already have links with China through their shirt sponsorship deal with JinkoSolar, a renewable energy group.

Anyone wishing to watch football in Valencia can obtain tickets from the box offices of both clubs. Further information can be found on the following websites:

Valencia’s other club Levante continue to punch above their weight, although they too have had an indifferent March. Los Granotas were heavily beaten by Real Madrid, and suffered home defeats at the hands of Celta Vigo and Real Betis, respectively. A draw in Cornellà – El Prat stadium against in – form Espanyol was a welcome surprise and a convincing 2-0 victory at the beginning of the month against Osasuna ensured they maintain a mid – table berth as the season enters its final stages.

CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA Some people think that Aliens came down from outer space to mate with Valencians. They knew that one day when the word got out, people would come from miles to see these fantastic specimens and when the time was right, they would attack our great resourceful planet and steal all of our misused natural resources and put them to a better use on their own planet, because they couldn’t stand to watch us destroy such beauty any longer.

SINGLE OR IN A RELATIONSHIP? THE ONGOING QUESTION Welcome back peeps after a long, hard Fallas….congratulations, if you’re reading this, you made it!!!! Partying hard and drinking even harder, finally the streets are clean and the city is back to its usual self, but what is that exactly and is it good or bad??? Those of you who have lived here for a while will know, but for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, Valencia used to be a kind of Mecca during the ‘90s for the Spanish people living in different cities around Spain. At one time it was a well-known fact that if you wanted to go out for a good /never – ending summer party, listen to underground / non – commercial styles of music and be surrounded by thousands of good – looking single people, Valencia was the place for you. There used to be a movement called the Ruta de Bakalao by the press. Basically it was a party that people used to go to which was spread out over four days, starting on Thursday and supposedly finishing on Sunday. Another thing you should know is that it wasn’t just in one club, it was shared out between several clubs all beginning at different times and carefully planned, so as one club played its last tune, the next was just about to open their doors…..AMAZING!!!!!!! In many people’s opinion, due to this period of time, Valencia created a super race, a new improved kind of human being, one which could drink a ridiculous amount of alcohol and still not fall over, one which could party for four days straight without any sleep and still not feel tired, but most interestingly a type of human which is incredibly and outstandingly good looking!!

So that brings me swiftly to the next theory I’d like to share with you…..and it is related to the question that nearly everyone will have asked at least once in their life, normally between the ages of 28 and 31: TO BE OR NOT TO BE…? I know good old William was trying to be all philosophical and all that ,but sorry Will, I’m going to break it down in to layman’s terms for everyone so they can all clearly understand what you were really saying…… SINGLE OR RELATIONSHIP?;) It doesn’t matter if you are in a relationship or not, living in Valencia is a constant battle. Whether it be with yourself or with your respectable other half, if you are a decent person and care about people in the slightest, unfortunately if you do certain things in this city, sooner or later you are going to feel like you’re missing something. Option 1 Have a nice girlfriend /boyfriend and take them to places like JIMMY GLASS (C/Baja, 28), BLACK NOTE(C / Polo y Peyrolón, 15), CAFÉ DUENDE (C/ Turia, 62), EL LOCO (C/ Erudito Orellena, 12), CAFÉ DE LAS HORAS (C / Conde de Almodóvar, 1), CAFÉ LISBOA (Plaza Dr. Collado, 9),or just nice little local bars at the end of the street or around the barrio to have a quiet couple of beers or a cortado con leche natural. Not forgetting that you might sometimes have the added bonus of spotting a cheap ticket in one of the quality local theatres such as CARME THEATRE (C/ Gutenberg, 12), TEATRO PRINCIPAL (C/ Barcas, 15) or the TEATRO OLYMPIA (C/ San Vicente Mártir, 44) every 7 –14 weeks to break the routine up a little. Oh yeah, that’s if you do manage to leave the house due to the idea of saving money for future perfect holidays, things for the perfect house and rainy days that you never see coming.

Or…Option 2 Dedicate your life to work, gym, family and friends. Go out to places like PLAY (C/ Cuba, 8), NYLON (C/ Gran Vía Germanías, 31), RADIO CITY(C/ Santa Teresa, 19), LA3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2), MYA (Avenida del Saler, 5), or the well-spoken-of, newly opened JERUSALEM CLUB (C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55) whenever you feel like it, without anyone giving you grief over anything or anyone you choose to do or to meet. Spending your money on things YOU want to do, places YOU want to go and things that YOU want to buy at that exact moment. Granted both options have their upsides and their downsides, but one thing I’ll tell you is that you’d better be sure!!!!! Valencia is a very unforgiving city and once it has its grips on you, it might never let you go……. My only advice (and this is coming from someone who has absolutely no idea about these things ) is if you are in a relationship, stay away from option 2. It will be very problematic in the future because of the Aliens and their master plan to capture us ……that’s where they all breed !!! Hahahaha! Even if you are only having a harmless dance and good time with your friends/ partner, bad after conversations will stem from those kind of places…….I blame the Aliens’ telepathic powers;) And if you choose option 1, make sure that you have lived your life to the full and are fully ready for the long haul……endless nights cuddled up on the sofa, long walks with no specific intention of reaching anywhere for your weekends, and restaurant after restaurant with similar types of couples with only one thing on the menu – serious future plans about houses, jobs, kids, and joint holidays. I will say this: “The grass is always greener on the other side”, but consider what you have just read before you make either decision. Life is too short and precious to make decisions that will only make someone, maybe not you, unhappy for an undefined amount of time. Think carefully what you really want and then NIKE (just do it). JTLTDX TRYING TO KEEP IT REAL….STAY CLASSY VALENCIA;)X P.S. – Some birds aren’t supposed to be put in a cage like some lions aren’t supposed to be put in a zoo.

WOMAN This time Palma de Mallorca welcomed me for a four – day holiday in a three – star hotel with a rental car from Centauro. Including my flight I only paid a little over 200 euros! If you’re interested in the Balearic Islands, you should book your package to Ibiza in September now. Don’t miss out on their fabulous closing parties, dance to really good music and please check out the sunsets of Café del Mar for once! They are magical and a must – see if you live so close to such an amazing experience.

Happiness is a privilege Boy meets girl in Fallas, they exchange fluids, break up with their partners, a new love has begun. Welcome to postFallas and its new romances. Spring has finally sprung, even for those who just got dumped after lame excuses like “She started it!” or “I was drunk, honey!” or “It was just a kiss!”… Are you serious? I never bought crap like that, but I was already single long before Fallas 2014 hit my apartment in El Carmen. The only five days in town, petardos explode every freaking 15 minutes underneath my bedroom window, leaving me with no other option than to escape my beloved Valencia. You’d think there’s a lot to offer in Fallas for the singles scene that awaits new meat, but I personally don’t see the point of flirting with heavily intoxicated Fallas tourists. Gorgeous, coked-up, boozedup, ‘bad breath boys’ never attracted me that much, even though they’re God’s gift to women. So I checked out chollos in advance at www.logitravel.es and escaped town on 19 March. On this last important day of Fallas, perfect travel offers can be found offering luxury, good food, sunsets and SILENCE.

Coming home to the clean city after my beautiful trip to Mallorca is a true blessing! My two cats await me anxiously and my boyfriend does, too. (Oops, correction!) No boyfriend, never married, no kids and two cats. It’s not that I’m complaining (maybe just a little) but where are all the normal, available, exciting guys hanging around these days?! Rephrase. Stable guys around my age, with a steady job, living independently without major debts to finance their car or any other over-the-top lifestyle they really can’t afford. The economic crisis, the lack of wanting to be self – sufficient and their mummies who’ll forever want to do their laundry unfortunately created an interesting group of single men. And what about the super slick sugar daddies offering their wealth in certain bars in Cánovas? Do I look like a lady that actually needs one? I run my own business, I travel the world because it’s healing (and because I can), I know what I want, who I am and what I need. If we do talk inaccessible age and good for my ego, I’d say 25-year-old, toned, smart and funny will do fine for ‘ta(l)king me through the night’. Why not?

economic crisis on the singles scene, making a serious relationship in Valencia complicated from the start? How does a happy 40-year-old meet true love? Excuse me? Do I still believe in true love after major failure (certain assholes) and other disillusions? Of course I do! I’m a romantic Dutch/Latina wondering honestly where to find sweet, tall, independent and elegant men. Those who take care of themselves, act crazy once in a while and willing to handle a stubborn, adventurous and ‘super-hot woman’ like me. (My flaws might fill up an entire Valencian dictionary, so I leave it to the real machos to find out if they dare). “Chica Busca Chico”. I never read those ads but I think I tried practically everything else in the dating scene. Badoo, clubbing, Skout, speed dating, Meetic, travelling, Facebook (yes, that one, too) and ‘house boring parties’. I never tried life as a swinger (no comment), been to a club de parejas or other extravagant parties in which exchanging bodily fluids is much more important than getting to know the other one (or four). Getting to know me is quite a challenge but if no one writes me a letter (with pictures please!), I’ll keep on travelling the world anyway. Los Angeles in September, Las Vegas in October. Because I’m happy, privileged and always loving life in Valencia! Marilûz Vergaz P.S. Send letters to: happysinglevalencia@hotmail.com (who dares?)

Stability, monogamy, trust and selfrespect are standards I happen to value much, though I can’t seem to find them out here. Most of the people I know cheat on their partner, learn to be corrupt and pass on the tradition. How do you ever learn to trust or respect yourself this way? Is it a privilege or a right to be genuinely happy? How do you gain self-esteem when you have to accept any job? Did I overlook the consequences of the Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA CRICKET always on the lookout for new players, scorers, umpires and spectators. More information can be found on our website: www.levantecc.com or by contacting us through Facebook Levante CC.

Levante Cricket Club in Valencia is Moving on Up The Valencian standard, the senyera, billows lightly in the background atop the Torres de Serrano, joggers and walkers alike pause briefly to take in the action which arouses memories of lazy summers back home with the sound of leather on willow and the faint aroma of linseed oil or, as is more likely in this particular spot, to ask the ubiquitous, “Qué coño hacen?” For some it is a little corner of England (or South Africa, or New Zealand, or Pakistan...) in some foreign land, while for others it is another world on their doorstep. This is the VCG – cricket in the heart of Valencia. The home side, Levante Cricket Club, having won the league at the first time of asking, is now ready for the coming season in the ECCL Division 1. Founded in the late spring of 2012 by a small group of expatriates, the Levante Cricket Club has moved from a group of lads chatting over a few beers in a local bar to a legitimate entity with an ever-growing membership base and title aspirations being just the beginning. Alameda Bridge have been replaced by organized training sessions under floodlights. The inter-squad matches on sparse rugby pitches have given way to tour games and league fixtures at the city’s baseball and softball facility, which has ultimately produced a sense of home for the club and the sport in Valencia. Located in the Turia gardens in Valencia’s dry riverbed, the VCG offers a somewhat unique experience for everyone. Levante is Valencia’s first-ever cricket club to be based right in the city centre, offering touring teams ease-ofaccess to accommodation, restaurants and post-game entertainment. The city itself offers a great deal too, from the ancient to the modern, parks to beaches, sightseeing to nightlife, all within one of Spain’s most friendly and relaxed atmospheres. The climate also provides for almost year-round cricket, with Levante playing their competitive fixtures predominantly between April and September and tour dates available as early as late March up until the end of November. The VCG is surfaced with the latest field turf which allows for a consistent, weather-proof outfield, while the adapted Notts Sport roll-out wicket offers pace and consistency. Training is Thursday nights from 20.00 – 22.00h. With a full fixture calendar of league and touring teams, they are

(T’AI CHI TEACHER) Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. After studying French and Spanish, I got into a career in exporting and have been lucky to visit nearly 40 countries. My favourite place, so far, is Argentina – the best steak in the world with fabulous fishing, tango and amazing landscapes. I was born in Liverpool (and am pleased to see signs of improvement at L.F.C.!) with a Glaswegian dad and a Welsh mum. I worked in various parts of the UK and had spells living and working in both France and Spain. For the last 15 years or so, I was based in Abergavenny, South Wales, with my wife, Anne, and 17-yearold daughter, Natasha. We moved out to Valencia last summer and immediately felt very much ‘at home’ here, in a nice rented apartment near Plaza de la Virgen, directly above two bars! About 25 years ago, when living in Edinburgh, I was captivated by the graceful, flowing, meditative movements of a young Chinese guy, Tom Yang, practicing his T’ai Chi. Something powerful resonated inside me that made me want to discover more. I joined his class and have been studying and practicing T’ai Chi ever since, wherever I have lived.

What is T’ai Chi? The first principle of T’ai Chi is relaxation. With gentle flowing movements that everyone can enjoy, we remind ourselves how wonderful it feels to have a soft body and a still mind. With good tuition and regular practice, the mental and physical benefits are 100% guaranteed, often spectacular and sometimes transformational. To quote Dr. Chiang Tao Chi on the subject: “The nature of T’ai Chi is to relieve muscular tension and mental stress and to maintain inner peace. Every part of your body should feel light and sensitive and your whole body should act as one unit.” Ego, striving, acquisitiveness and force won’t work with T’ai Chi; softness, patience, humility and acceptance will. People shouldn’t be fooled or put off by any mystical guru-speak or New Age psycho-babble. T’ai Chi is extremely down to earth, totally natural, accessible to anybody, of any age and (in my view) the best gift we can give ourselves. I take a pragmatic, personalised and empathic approach to teaching (sharing) and I am told that my style is generous, inspiring and effective, with a lightness of touch (sounds OK to me!).

and safe here. I enjoy walking or cycling to most places. I am adapting to the slower pace of living and sometimes frustrating bureaucracy. You need to be patient and invest in building relationships. Business conditions are clearly very tough and I hope that Spain has the leadership, team spirit and honesty to improve its economic and social situation soon. After nine months here, including a winter, I would have expected any ‘honeymoon effect’ to have passed, but I still find Valencia intoxicating, unique, enigmatic and probably addictive! As for Britain, I miss the mountains around Abergavenny, the rivers and lakes, “Come Dine with Me”, “Match of the Day” and not much else! Any plans for the future? Definitely go back to Buenos Aires for another steak one day! Before then, teach members of the 24/7 Valencia team some T’ai Chi (and other readers, of course… email andrew@softlimit.co.uk or call 609 718 002 for a chat). Keep improving my Spanish. Continue to relish life in Valencia and smile even more. Be a decent husband and dad. Accept with courage and gratitude what life brings. That’s plenty, I think!

How do you find living and working in Spain compared to Britain? I have to say, I don’t think I’ve smiled as much before as I do here. I love the blue sky, the architecture, the plazas with their hundreds of bars and restaurants and the general ‘vibe’. I feel welcomed, relaxed
