At Mediterranea Hamburguesas sl, quality is our trademark and what sets us apart. We choose to work with the best materials, with a freshness and distinctive quality too. We enhance each burger with touches of the Mediterranean. Our daily challenge is to be the best burger bar in Valencia. Our meat comes from Valles de Esla in the province of Leon. The mostly mountain-bred animals are raised in semi-liberty, protecting the cattle and the environment. They feed on natural milk, vegetables & natural forages. Due to this healthy diet, their fats are heart-healthy. Our butchers get the best cuts and we take care to mince the meat daily, to preserve all its quality in addition to its unique flavour. All our vegetables are selected daily from the market to ensure freshness. Our bread is made the traditional way, wood oven baked with 100% natural ingredients. You can choose from Mediterranean, American poppy seed, coca or gluten-free bread. Or potatoes are fresh and homemade daily, fried in 100% vegetable oil, which is eco-friendly and government approved. Delicious and healthy at the same time! Our burgers are cooked in the moment, so you can enjoy the fresh flavour. We are not a slow burger bar but we are not fast food either. We have a menu with 15 burgers as well as sandwiches, salads and starters. All with most original and tasty recipes that make our burger the best in the city. If you have coeliac disease, we have many gluten-free options for you. We are now based in the centre of Valencia and also in the heart of Ruzafa. AMERICAN SPACE VALENCIA In Building 4P of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia you’ll find a little part of the U.S.A. American Space Valencia is a cultural space providing information, learning opportunities and a whole load of varied activities for anyone (not only university members) who might be interested in different aspects of life in the U.S. We spoke to its Director, Kathy Matles, an ESL instructor in the UPV’s language center, who is from Michigan but has lived in Spain for over 20 years. How and when did the American Space Valencia get started? American Space Valencia has been in operation since April 16, 2013, when the U.S. Embassy signed a memorandum of agreement with UPV (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia). An opening event was held and attended by the former ambassador to Spain, Alan Solomont, the rector of the UPV and the mayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá. American Space Valencia was officially inaugurated on December 10, 2013 by the current Ambassador to Spain, James Costos. There are over 700 American Spaces in 152 countries worldwide, but this was the first to open in Spain. Since its inauguration, another American Space has also been opened in Madrid. American Space Valencia has already managed over 90 programs attended by more than 5,000 people What exactly is the American Space? American Space Valencia is a bilateral

organization whose main objective is to promote mutual understanding between Spain and the U.S. It is an initiative of the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Spain and based in the Universitat Politécnica de Valencia. It provides the opportunity to learn about the United States – specifically in areas such as U.S. culture, politics, business practices, foreign policy, the English language, and employment and educational opportunities in the United States. It is a rich source of all kinds of information about the United States, but most importantly, it is a venue for two – way conversation that will promote greater mutual understanding. American Space Valencia houses a wide selection of English language learning tools, including extensive online databases and an e-library. It is open five days a week and offers all its services, programs and resources free to the public. Programming is provided around five core areas: English teaching and learning, educational counseling for students interested in American schools, cultural programs, alumni programs and information about the United States. That sounds great, but why have an American Space in Valencia? What’s the thinking behind that? The United States and Spain have a long history of strong ties, and it’s natural that we would want to learn more about each other. ASV provides a venue for this dialogue. ASV arranges activities and events that open discussion between

Spaniards and Americans and educate and inform the local population about the United States. Best of all, this wealth of information is offered free of charge for everyone. The ASV brings together Americans who are interested in sharing their culture and members of the Valencia community who are seeking information about the U.S. People come to listen to speakers or to see films. They come to learn about the holidays we celebrate, or to participate in one of our community volunteering programs, and they come to learn English. Is it working? Are people learning about America through the American Space? Absolutely! American Space Valencia can help you find answers to questions about the United States and its people, culture, economics and political systems and foreign policies. It has a small library that offers literature in various subjects: general reference, American history, contemporary American society, democracy and human rights, biographies of prominent Americans, general nonfiction, American economics, trade and business, American geography and travel, American arts and performing arts and American literature. It also has subscriptions to periodicals and magazines such as Entrepreneur, the Atlantic, Smithsonian, Popular Science, Wired, Mental Floss, the Nation, Bloomberg Businessweek and others.

Weekly programs include conversations hours, lectures, video showings, book discussions, and Embassy guest speakers’ events and numerous workshops are hosted throughout the year. American Space Valencia also holds programs that give children the opportunity to use their English in a non – classroom setting through programs like Art in English and digital storytelling.

US and people who have worked and studied in the USA.

American Space Valencia contains a rich section of books and other materials to help you find information on American universities and colleges, courses of study, scholarships, and life in the United States. There are books and DVD materials to help you prepare for tests such as TOEFL iBT, SAT, GMAT and GRE that are given in English.

Absolutely not, we invite people from any country to join in our events. American Space Valencia is open to anyone who wants to learn about the USA and to take advantage of opportunities to meet other people interested in practicing English, volunteering, enjoying a film, learning about our holidays, etc.

American Space Valencia allows for numerous opportunities to aid the community and create awareness about social issues in general through programs like the Coastal Cleanup project, Tech Camp, and other events held in cooperation with local and national NGOs. The Space is equipped with computers and tablets for quick Internet access to websites about the United States. What kind of misconceptions do you sometimes find people have about the States? Given what they see in films and television series, it is normal for people to have misconceptions about the United States and American people in general. American Space Valencia helps to provide a better understanding of our culture, customs and traditions through various events, including debates and presentations given by students from the

And it’s not just for university members? No, American Space Valencia is open to the public in general. Or only for Americans?

What’s there for our readers? A wealth of information and opportunities to learn about the United States. Opportunities to exchange ideas, experience American culture, learn about our holidays through our celebrations of Independence Day, Thanksgiving celebration and other holiday events, and a chance to meet and exchange conversation with artists, authors, business leaders and other speakers who host presentations at our Space. We are open to any ideas for future events we should offer and actively look for ways to collaborate with other organizations with common goals. How can we get in touch with the American Space? For more information, you can visit the American Space Valencia blog: http:// americanspacevalencia.blogs.upv.es, Or visit the ASV Facebook and Twitter pages: Americanspace.valencia and

@americanspacevl Send an email to: AmericanSpace. Valencia@gmail.com Or stop by for a visit. American Space Valencia is located on the first floor of Building 4P at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Opening hours in September are Monday – Friday, 10.00h –13.00h. How can we get involved? All of our activities are run by volunteers and they are all doing incredible things with the help of people like you. Maybe you can dedicate an hour a week or even an hour a month to help us make American Space Valencia even better! Would you be interested in volunteering to lead or participate in the following activities? English discussion clubs (possible topics include America in the news, American sports, American TV and films, etc.) Craft clubs (Other American Spaces are doing sessions on how to make jewelry, scrapbooking, how to knit or sew, etc. Your ideas are very welcome here and the possibilities are endless.) Technology clubs (how to make Android apps, how to make videos, use YouTube effectively, computer skills, and programming) Digital storytelling and how to make trailers for either children’s or adult books Celebrate typical American holidays English debate club English theater for children or adults Any other activities you might be interested in and would like to propose! KIERAN ALLEN ‘KIRUU’ Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. Originally of Irish – English origin, I grew up between Tanzania and Kenya. I’ve also lived and worked in Spain, Argentina, France, and travelling widely around the globe. These experiences have coloured my music with styles and languages that form an integral part of my sound. My first band TSTI was formed when I lived in the UK between 2000 and 2004. Upon leaving, I travelled the world, playing in Brazil, Australia, and East Africa, before settling back in Ireland in 2005. I set up a new band in Ireland called the Caracoles. Moving to Spain, first in 2006 for a brief period and then in 2009, different bands were set up, including my main project Baobab Interactive Music. During my time in Valencia, music and work projects took me to Argentina, Tanzania and France. In Valencia, I also formed Kyriana, a Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

duo with a Mexican jazz singer named Mariana Rodríguez, and played with the Life Lovers Band. How do you find living in Valencia compared to Dublin? They are very different places. Valencia is probably my favourite city in the world. It is the perfect size, on the coast, and I also really like the different cultural hubs and the fact that it isn’t all concentrated in the middle. Dublin is great, a lot bigger and spread out. It is very green, and while it takes a while to get around, it has a village type feel and everyone knows each other. It is more expensive than Valencia, but there seems to be better pay and more opportunities. Tell us about the music and influences of Kiruu & Baobab. ‘Kiruu & Baobab’ is an EP, which I recorded with the members of the Baobab project. In 2011, I started playing guitar and singing at interactive concerts in Valencia. My new songs were written with parts designed for audience participation and interaction. Joined by Nelo Royner (washboard

& spoons), Saül Vanaclocha (vocals), Pau Espert (clarinet), and later Carlos Riaño (piano, Hammond organ) and Beto Pérez (percussion), Baobab was formed. With my new songs, which took influences from English, Irish, Spain, and Tanzanian music, the group developed an eclectic mix of different styles and languages. After farewells from Nelo and Saül, Rafa Ramos (double bass) joined in 2013, and Baobab continued until the spring of 2014. I launched this solo project in 2013, recording “Nyumbani” with local artists Enika, Carol Uliwa, and Essau Pwelle in Tanzania. This EP is a memoir of the Baobab project, and my time in Tanzania. Take us through the songs of ‘Kiruu & Baobab’. Sikupendi is a ska – rumba type Swahili ballad whose subject is gender violence in Tanzania. The message of the song is that if a woman is mistreated by her man, she should tell him “Sikupendi tena / Nakuacha sasa”, which means “I don’t love you anymore, I’m leaving you now.” Lu is a mix of swing and folk and was written through the influence of singing

with Le Petit Manouche in Valencia. The subject is about loving in vain. Equinox combines English, Spanish, and Swahili lyrics with reggae and indie styles. The song is about regret, responsibility, dreams, and clashes with people. Outer Sills was written in 2006. It is a slow, post – rock type sound, whose lyrics touch on the theme of freedom from emotional bondage. Nyumbani is a thumping indie pop song, which I recorded in Tanzania. Nyumbani means ‘home’ in Swahili and the message of the song is that home is within.

FOOD

Hummus Nori Wrap By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca

End of holidays? It’s a wrap! Take a raw food – fuelled jump start with a Hummus Nori Wrap. Returning from the sun – kissed isle of tourist magnet Mallorca in its full August frenzy, I can fully sympathize if you are on your first holiday visit to Valencia. For arriving in unknown territory and trying to seek out the best place to eat is always a loaded challenge. Fortunately, Valencia is not so extreme in its tourism as Mallorca, where prayers are even offered up in churches for those working in the tourism industry. Really they should be offered up for the tourist, too, as the main aim is clearly to entice you in, with little or no attention on enticing you back! Smiley crocodiles prowl outside restaurants to snap you up, processing you as quickly as possible, to return you to the street, empty of wallet and satisfaction. Possibly this is good business, but there must be something wrong in the equation if neither the client nor the staff seem happy with the result. However, like good knights of old, we fought bravely on in our quest for inspiration, consuming in our path tasty pan amb oli, plus patatas bravas and calamar, of course, to fuel our energy and trampo (a Mallorcan salad). But nothing really stood out until finally it came... surprisingly in the shape of a Hummus nori salad wrap at the Dharma Café, Alcúdia in Mallorca! Not very Mallorcan I know, but let’s face it; we’d eaten all those bravas. Those indulgence summer days are over and this is a perfect raw food health kick, with a sea – themed tribute to those Mallorcan crystal clear waters. Seaweed or sea vegetables, if it helps you to think more favourably of them, are the oldest plant family on Earth, and ounce for ounce, have more vitamins

Hummus Seaweed Wrap Ingredients • 2 nori seaweed sheets, joined together by moistening with water and fingers (or you can use 1 sheet and a smaller amount of filling) Filling • Hummus • 1 jar chickpeas, or equivalent using dried (soak thoroughly if using jar to get rid of preservatives) • 1 tablespoon tahini (sesame paste) • 1/2 clove garlic (optional) • 1/2 lemon, juiced • 1 teaspoon dried cumin • 4 tablespoons olive oil • Salt to taste • Blend all ingredients very well, until mixture is smooth • 1 carrot, peeled and sliced very finely, marinated in a little orange juice and olive oil • 1/4 beetroot, peeled and grated finely • 1 small handful sprouted mung beans (keep some for garnish) • 4 – 6 cashew nuts • Oak leaf lettuce leaves (roble) • Sesame seeds for garnish

friend for the post – summertime blues season that lies ahead…and I’m sure it is going to be a firm favourite on the menu at La Ola Fresca. Prepare the hummus and salad ingredients. Just before serving, wet the two sheets of Nori and seal together with fingers and place the cold ingredients inside, then wrap together. Sealing again, using a little water and pressing with your fingers. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and mung beans. Serve immediately. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

TAO TAO One Monday in the summer D and I had been in all day working, we were hot and tired and needed some air. I suggested a stroll around Ruzafa. We could have a beer and window shop. We left the house at around 17.30h and spent a pleasant hour strolling and people watching and stopped for a beer. We chatted to friends who just happened to be passing and gradually realised we were getting hungry. Let’s get a pizza! Neither of us loves pizza, but sometimes a really good one hits the spot, so we rang P, who had been telling us just the night before that she’d been to a great pizza place the night before. We headed in its direction, only to find it closed. We tried another, also closed. It dawned on us finally – Monday! Not a good night to eat in Valencia – most restaurants close on Monday night. Feeling a little defeated, we decided to make our way home. As we walked up C/ Cadiz, a wonderful smell wafted our way, coming from a little place called Tao Tao. It was empty but the cook was busily preparing food, wonderful smelling food. We went in and were shown to a little scrubbed wood table and a menu placed before us. Tao Tao is a Taberna Asiática - foods from all over Asia with emphasis on Japan. It is a small menu with perhaps 25 dishes to choose from. We chose Yakitori (little Japanese kebabs), Yakisoba (Japanese buckwheat noodles), some dumplings (steamed or griddled - we chose griddled) and stir – fried vegetables of the day with chicken. The friendly Spanish waiter told us it was ample as he brought our beers and took our order. It was excellent both in taste

and value - just under 20€, and while we ate the place filled up and we realised we had been lucky to get a table.

of condiments like sweet sauce (Okonomi sauce), mayonnaise, dried seaweed and dried fish flakes.”

We were so impressed we went back yesterday for lunch and decided to let the chef – owner, a charming Chinese lady named Suu, choose our meal. She told us we should try her Rollitas Vietnamitas (Vietnamese spring rolls, 5€), which she makes by hand and are loved by everyone who tastes them. She then chose us a Pad Thai (a Thai noodle dish, 7.50€) and a small Okonomiyaki (a Japanese crepe, 4€ small, 8€ large).

I must say it was an entirely new flavour for me and D. I can understand its popularity, most of the diners seemed to be regulars and most of them were eating an Okonomiyaki the day we went. We had the small, we would not have been able to eat a large between us!

Before we talk about the food, I should say that Tao Tao is small – seats probably only twenty diners or so. It is modern and minimal in its decor, save for a panel of images from old Japan and an antique framed advert for Soap on another wall. The room is dominated by a long bar / counter, part of which has a glass partition to the small, spotlessly clean kitchen where Suu or her chefs cook in full view of the restaurant. The Rollitas Vietnamitas arrived, eight of them, and she was right. Delicious, meltin-the-mouth baby spring rolls served with a sweet and sour hot dipping sauce. The Pad Thai was delicious, topped with crushed roasted peanuts and full of chicken, vegetables and flavour. We had never heard of an Okonomiyaki, but a website dedicated to the dish, http:// okonomiyakiworld.com/, describes it thus; “It’s a traditional Japanese food that is sometimes called ‘Japanese Pancake’ or ‘Japanese Pizza’. It’s a savoury dish that is a bit more like an omelette or frittata than a pancake and it’s made with okonomiyaki flour, eggs, cabbage, pork (bacon), shrimp or other seafood, and topped with a variety

We had beer as it was lunchtime. Tao Tao offers a good range of beers, both national and Asian, and there is a small wine list with prices from 6€ – 15€. Our meal this time came to under 20€ and was tasty, ample quality food, cooked to order with market – fresh ingredients. I have been in two minds whether to write about this little jewel of a place. It’s already a favourite with the locals after only five months of trading and fills very quickly both at lunch and dinner. I might start having to book after this article. EL PUEBLO If you ask most big Spanish city dwellers where they come from, they often reply, “From here, but my pueblo is...” It seems that the only people who genuinely consider themselves to be from the city alone are to be found among fourth generation city dwellers. Everyone else seems to have a village somewhere in Spain where they return in summer or at the weekend or other holiday times, a town where their parents or grandparents live and where they have some of their fondest memories. The memories are fond because one usually visits el pueblo on holiday or at the weekend. In summer, kids make friends in el pueblo with whom they share their long holiday adventures, as opposed to their school friends back in the city who they get to know amid the everyday drudgery of school life. And as they grow up, they continue to meet each other in their pueblo’s fiestas and in summer away from work. As a result, one’s friendships in el pueblo are also usually a bit more special than the ones in the city. A Madrileño friend, who is in his pueblo for summer as I write, told a heartwarming anecdote that illustrates the friendliness and safety one finds in the pueblo that has long ceased to exist in the city: Three girls aged about eight knocked on his door soon after he arrived and asked: “Are there any kids in this house?”

“No, why?” “Because we’re looking for friends to play with this summer.” The following day, when my friend was in the village square, he found a handmade poster in crayon on the wall of the town hall announcing: “Kids! If you want to meet up, let’s meet here in the plaza tomorrow afternoon at 5!” [Signed by three girls.]” Such trust can only be found in a village where everybody knows each other and whose kids are whose. With people out on the street most of the day in summer and long into the night, there is nearly always someone with an eye on the kids who knows them or their parents. But I also remember when I first discovered such trust among kids and their parents, when visiting friends in Cartagena, in a bar with a terrace. As most of my friends have children but wanted a bit of adult time for a chat, a couple told their kids to “go and play with those kids over there”, referring to a bunch of children the same age playing on some swings nearby. They promptly did so, introducing themselves and soon playing games as if they had known each other for months. I later realised that this is quite common, at least in the south. Nevertheless, while el pueblo produces lifelong friendships, it can also create perhaps too many ties, especially for those who live there all year. Obviously, in winter the population can drop

dramatically and with it, the pace of life. Generally, given Spain’s greater size and sparser population than the UK, the pueblos are more cut off from the big city than villages in the UK, which tend to be no more than a 30-minute drive away from the metropolis. My groups of Valencian friends from pueblos stick together through thick and thin, but sometimes perhaps a little too much for their own good. Nearly all have known each other since school age. In Spain, the classes in school are not divided into academic abilities as in the UK, with the result that some children are held back whilst others fall behind. But one advantage is that they get to know children of all social backgrounds and abilities and learn to make friends with perhaps a greater variety of characters. In the pueblos, however, where there are no other social groups of their age, they grow up knowing the same group of people, hanging out in the same places and socialising in the same tight-knit group. This can obviously be a good thing in terms of getting to know each other intimately, but it does seem to produce a certain amount of dependency, too. Whenever I meet my groups of friends in pueblos after a few weeks of absence, they invariably ask where I’ve been with more than a hint of, “Why weren’t you with us?” They also usually talk about those in the group who don’t happen to be present, asking who they are with and why they couldn’t come etc., dropping hints of betrayal to the group.

I also find friends in el pueblo with very different characters who would probably never have become friends if they had lived in the city with its myriad of social possibilities. The need to fit in seems to lead to standardised conversation and tastes in everything from cuisine to clothing. One needs a certain amount of social bravery to be a punk rocker or drag queen in a pueblo. And then there are the social and moral obligations. My friends from pueblos who come some weekends to the city are all

too often tied to last – minute obligations in the pueblo such as, “My neighbours’ cousin’s cat has passed away so we’re all going to keep him company” or “My great aunt María is having her ingrowing toenails cut so we’re staying here this weekend”. With so many obligations to the pueblo’s family and friends, they seem to find obvious difficulties in making new friends and relationships. If only they could keep the attitude of children who visit the pueblo in summer when they

grow up. Sadly, most of us seem to lose the candid, innocent openness of those three girls when we become adults. Maybe the summer kids in the pueblo could teach us all something about making new friends.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Paco Alcácer

Álvaro Negredo joins Valencia CF!

VALENCIA SHOW EARLY SEASON PROMISE There was hardly a ripple in the international football press when, midway through the World Cup, Valencia made the surprising decision to dispense with the services of manager Juan Antonio Pizzi and replace him with the little known Nuno Espírito Santo. Portuguese – born Santo had taken unfashionable Rio Ave to within a whisker of winning the Taça da Liga in Portugal and he was rewarded with a one – year contract with Valencia as a result. He met the players for the first time at Paterna on 7 July, and two days later they headed off to Herzogenaurach in Bavaria for several days training. The location is synonymous with Valencia’s new kit sponsors, Adidas, and was used by Argentina and Mexico in the past to prepare for World Cup campaigns. Valencia ended their time in Germany with two friendly matches against SpVgg Bayreuth, which they won 5-1, and a 1-0 defeat against FC Nürnberg. A quick return to Spain and then the squad were off again, this time to South America to compete in the Euro – America Cup. Atlético Madrid and Fiorentina were the other European teams participating in this annual event. Los Chés played Alianza Lima first and lost 9-8 on penalties after the teams had ended level 2-2 after 90 minutes. Immediately afterwards they headed south from Peru to Chile and lost out 1-0 in a tough battle with Universidad Católica in Santiago. London was the next stop for the Blanquinegres to take part in the Emirates Cup along with Monaco, Benfica and hosts Arsenal.

Valencia looked to be heading for a 2-1 victory in their first game against Monaco thanks to a Carvalho own goal and a Paco Alcácer strike but a late equaliser from Ocampos gave the French outfit a share of the spoils. The following day they took on Benfica and put in their most impressive performance to date, coming from a goal behind with goals from Gayá, Piatti and Guardado to earn a well – deserved 3-1 victory. With Arsenal needing to win but only managing a draw against Monaco, Valencia claimed their first piece of silverware of the season on goal difference. The victorious team headed back to Spain before returning to the UK in mid – August to play Manchester United in a friendly that was to be Louis van Gaal’s first home game in charge of the Red Devils. Rodrigo Moreno looked to have given Valencia a draw on the night after cancelling out Darren Fletcher’s opener but Marouane Fellaini grabbed a winner for the home side in injury time. During the summer break there were plenty of comings and goings to and from Mestalla and the fans had numerous new faces to welcome at the match that also doubled up as the presentation night.

playing with Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. The final new faces at presentation night were Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo de Paul and goalkeeper Yoel from Celta Vigo. The latter was bought as a ready – made replacement for local boy Vicente Guaita, who departed for Getafe in hope of satisfying his desire to play regular first – team football. Also heading away from Mestalla were the majority of the loan signings brought in during last January’s transfer window. Eduardo Vargas, Philippe Senderos, Oriol Romeu and Seydou Keita will not be returning and all have since found new teams. Míchel, who has failed to establish himself in the first team since signing from neighbours Levante, has gone with Guaita on loan to Getafe and the promising youngster Fede Cartabia has moved to newly promoted Córdoba to gain further experience in La Liga. The defensive quartet of Víctor Ruiz, Ricardo Costa, Jérémy Mathieu and Juan Bernat have also moved to pastures new. Ruiz is on loan with local rivals Villarreal, whilst Portuguese stalwart Ricardo Costa will see out the twilight of his career with Al-Sailiya in Qatar.

The new manager had started by raiding his country of birth by bringing in João Cancelo, Rodrigo Moreno and André Gomes from Portuguese champions Benfica.

Bernat and Mathieu got the big money moves their performances last season deserved by heading to European giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona, with both the transfers netting Valencia a healthy profit in the process.

Shkodran Mustafi, a World Cup winner with Germany, and Lucas Orbán, a World Cup runner up from Argentina, also signed from Sampdoria and Bordeaux respectively, whilst youngster Nicolás Otamendi came back to the club after gaining a season’s experience

Valencia’s only pre – season friendly on home soil was against Italian giants AC Milan in the Trofeo Naranja Estrella Damm. The game itself was an entertaining affair. Alcácer put Los Chés ahead from around 40 yards by capitalising on a defensive error to blast the

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 ball past the Milan keeper who was caught in no man’s land.

shot was deflected into his direction with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

The visitors equalised late in the first courtesy of a fantastic free kick from their Japanese international Keisuke Honda. Valencia finally secured the win and kept the Trofeo Naranja on home soil when new signing Rodrigo Moreno cut in from the left and wriggled past two Milan players before beating the keeper on the near post from just inside the area.

Valencia hung on for a well – deserved draw against a team who are fancied to be pushing for a Champions League place. With the headto-head system rather than goal difference being the determining factor on La Liga standings at the end of the season, this point could have further significance when the year progresses.

With two pieces of silverware in the trophy cabinet at the end of the pre – season campaign, attention now turned to the new league campaign.

Valencia opened their home league account late on a Friday night against another Andalusian team, Málaga. Los Boquerones had started well with victory over Bilbao and almost stunned Mestalla into silence inside the first 30 seconds when Roque Santa Cruz missed an excellent chance to put the visitors in front.

The fixture computer had given Valencia a tough start, away to Sevilla in the intimidating Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. One notable absentee from presentation night had been Argentinian international Éver Banega, who had returned from his loan spell with Newell Old Boys. However, it transpired that Sevilla had stepped in late in the day and he had signed for the Andalusian club, re-uniting him with his former manager at Valencia, Unai Emery. Since Emery left Mestalla, the club have not managed to replicate the third place spot in La Liga that he constantly achieved. Despite his relative success, he did not endear himself with the Valencia faithful and the manner of the costly defeats against his Sevilla team that have denied the club a place in the Champions League and a Europa League final in consecutive years since have done little to appease that feeling. Both teams had the upper hand for periods of the first half but it was the home side that headed into the break with a slender lead thanks to a goal by Aleix Vidal just before the interval. Things got worse for Los Chés in the 67th minute. New signing Rodrigo de Paul had only been the pitch for 30 seconds when he got shown a straight red for a flailing elbow on the Sevilla goal scorer that drew blood. For the fourth season in a row, Valencia ended an away game against Sevilla with just 10 men, but there is a resoluteness about the Valencia side these days that has been missing in the past. New signing Lucas Orbán demonstrated this by coming off the bench and bundling the ball over the line after Otamendi’s

Valencia were awoken by the scare and started taking control of the game. The pivotal moment came when Málaga’s midfielder Sergi Darder was shown a straight red for a challenge on Valencia skipper Dani Parejo midway through the first half. Four minutes later the home side were ahead, thanks to a goal from two locally – born players who have progressed through the club’s junior ranks. Left back José Luis Gayá, who was born in Pedreguer, put in a telling cross to the front post that Torrent native Paco Alcácer instinctively reacted to. Málaga goalkeeper Kameni got a hand to Alcácer’s first – time touch but it proved too powerful for the former Cameroonian international to keep out. Alcácer celebrated wildly in front of the Curva Nord, who had been singing his name loudly before the start of the game, after learning earlier in the day he had been picked by Vicente del Bosque to be on the Spanish national squad for the first time for the friendly versus France and the European qualifier against Macedonia. Just before half – time Valencia doubled their lead. The home side were awarded a penalty after Feghouli’s menacing run was abruptly halted by a Málaga hand. Parejo’s weak kick was saved by Kameni, but the ball rebounded sweetly off the keeper and straight into the path of the penalty taker, who made no mistake with his other foot second time around. Valencia made much better use of the additional player in the second half and looked

in total control as the visitors were made to chase the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. The home side were rewarded with a third goal in the 56th minute when Pablo Piatti fired home a shot from the edge of the box after an excellent touch back from Alcácer that allowed the little Argentinian to shoot first without even breaking stride. The game then fizzled out as a contest and Valencia professionally saw the game to its close without conceding a goal to go top of La Liga for 24 hours. Valencia were busy wheeling and dealing right up until the 1 September transfer deadline. The manager went back to his old club Rio Ave to acquire midfielder Filipe Augusto and, having already brought in Bruno Zuculini from Manchester City, Los Chés returned to the current Premier League champions and captured the services of Spanish international Álvaro Negredo to the delight of Valencia fans across Spain. Out went Mexican international Andrés Guardado to PSV Eindhoven and he was joined by Hélder Postiga (Deportivo La Coruña) and Jonathan Viera and Vinícius Araújo, who both headed to Belgium with Standard Liège. Finally, Brazilian star Jonas Gonçalves has left the club, but has yet to find his next one. Across the city Levante have had a miserable league start, missing out by the odd goal at home to Villarreal, and then losing heavily in San Mamés to Bilbao. With Málaga away and Barcelona at home being the next fixtures for Los Granotas, it looks like it could be a tough start and losing standout keeper Keylor Navas to Real Madrid in the summer break has not helped the cause. Last season’s 10th position looks out of reach this year but games against Granada away and Rayo Vallecano at home at the end of September are the kind of matches Levante fans will be looking at realistically for a positive outcome. Anyone wishing to watch Valencia or Levante can obtain tickets from the respective box offices at both grounds, or visit their websites at www.valenciacf.com and www.levanteud. com, respectively. CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA to this now and pile down in the masses to practice their English / French / Italian and Welsh in exchange for a cheeky chupito at affordable uni prices (OK, maybe not Welsh;). HERE ARE THE HOT SPOTS TO GO: CAFE INFINITO (C/ Poeta Mas y Ros, 35)

O.M.G!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A SUMMER!!!!!

Fantastic party people from all over the world, brought together by magical DJs, local and from across the globe, all with the one same objective…to have fun!!! Valencia has been and always will be an amazing base in Europe if you wanna get on it. So many things to do and places to go, all you have to do is look further than your nose;). Once again we are starting another new temporada in September and fresh faces are flying in from destinations you can´t even pronounce, with the same anxiety I once had when I first arrived. What kind of people are going to be there? Will I get on with anyone? How am I going to learn Spanish??? Well, if you don´t already know, I´m going to tell you the quickest, easiest and the most fun way to answer all of those questions......GO CLUBBING!!!!!!! Like any other city, Valencia has some really great places to go out and caters for pretty much any musical taste (if you look). In September, all the new Erasmus students arrive, accompanied by the eager beavers (new English teachers) ready to start their new adventure. The norm is that for this month they all accumulate in the BLASCO IBÁÑEZ area, which is near the Valencia football club stadium because it is the cheapest place to rent and most advertised. As a result, this area of town is the busiest and most recommended to go out in to meet fellow foreigners looking for new friends / drinking partners with similar interests;). The Valencian locals have also cottoned on

This is a nice little bar with great food (also with a veggie option, difficult to find in Valencia) with classic indie music and hits from the past and present, but none which your commercial bar would tend to play. The atmosphere is nothing short of friendly and welcoming, which is exactly what you need on arriving to a new city if you ask me. Nice as a little starter before moving on to heavier places in the neighbourhood, with an English and Spanish speaking staff. Frankie Walsh is the Irish owner and a musician, too. CARIBBEAN’S (C/ Bélgica, 5) Famous for its weekly Erasmus nights, it´s a popular spot to visit with tidy bar staff (if you know what I mean) and cheap, cheap drinks;). The music is what you would expect in that kind of a place, loads of cheese, cheese topped with a little more cheese, but what the hell, the girls seem to like it and that´s all what matters, right???;). RUMBO 144 (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 144) The best night for this place is also on a Wednesday, as it is a continuation of Caribbean’s with the style of people but not the style of music. Thankfully it does a complete U-turn and drops 50 Cents into the mixer and Dr. Dre and the boys for a little bit of a hip – hop set. It´s normally packed out, as they hand out flyers that get you in for free before 3:30am all over the place. MINICLUB (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) This place gives you the alternative option regarding tech house, hard house, deep house (let’s just say all the houses) and drum & bass from time to time, but in general, non – commercial music is a must there. All the types of people who you would never see at the previous two places I just told you about with tattoos, piercings and cool hats go there;). If you’re looking for somewhere which is a little different and your musical taste buds are more

advanced than your average Joe’s, I´m sure that you will enjoy yourself there. On 19 September, Solomun is coming with Edu Imbernon to Veracruz at TB CLUB (C/ San Vicente, 305). This will also be one for those of you who don´t have weak hearts!!!!! The sound system is sweet at this club and the visual DJs are definitely up to the challenge, not to be missed!!!! JERUSALEM CLUB (C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55) is re-opening on 13 September with Kyodai gracing us with his presence for what is sure to be a banging set. Jerusalem was closed due to the boiling heat we have here in the Valencia summer but now things are getting back to normal (33 degrees instead of 39 degrees) and it is back with vengeance, ready to infect our ears with deep bass lines and ice cold vocals, mmmmm, can´t wait!!!!!! Okay, on a separate note, my good friend DJ Dom Scott will be making a brief appearance on 11 September at Kings Language Academy (C/ Juan Ramón Jiménez, 48, Bajo 3, Left) in the Malilla barrio of Valencia, to play a carefully selected set at the opening night there between 18.00h and 21.00h. Everyone is invited to this non – alcoholic event to see how a different approach to learning English can help you advance rapidly, focusing on real life situations in a cool environment. Kings’ philosophy is to try and help each person discover their potential, no matter what that might be or how hard it might be to reach. Go down and check it out, as they also offer weekend trips away all around Spain in exchange with conversational chit – chat with the students on the way. Anyway, once again I hope you have all enjoyed my monthly update of what you should or could be doing in and around Valencia, and if you are lucky enough to have some free time on your hands and fancy a bop, now at least you know where you can go;). Live long and prosper, my young Jedi Knights, and remember, if it´s that time of the night and you´ve lost your friends and everything seems to be going Pete Tong, try not to stress, calmly make your way to the bar and order another shot! EVERYTHING ALWAYS COMES OUT IN THE WASH;)

VALENCIA WORLD

LUIS LINARES Tell us something about background and travels.

your

I was born in Valencia in 1979 and since then this terreta has been my home. It’s where I have always lived, close to my friends and family. I’ve visited and fallen in love with many places like Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, Prague, Rome, Buenos Aires, New York and Venice. I have a special fondness for the Mediterranean islands of Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and, of course, the Balearic Islands of Minorca, Formentera and Ibiza, where I’m writing to you from. But it’s here in Valencia where I learnt to walk, literally and artistically. I finished university in 2004, specializing in graphic design and since then I alternate work in this field with my art. They are interlinked professions that feed off each other and are inseparable. Aspects of my art are part of graphic art, like the synthesis of elements and ‘the less is more’ idea of maximum expression with the bare minimum of tools. My artistic direction has been outlined by the different Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

exhibits that I have put on, including “Cine al Cuadrado”, “Corten!”, “Del Color al B/N”, “Passant per la Fusta”, “Cine es Cultura”, “Rat Pack” and my current exhibit, “Hitchcock’s Shadows”, at the Galería Alba Cabrera until September 2014. Describe your art, your inspiration and influences. I understand art as a dialogue between the work and the viewer. To begin that conversation, I need to look for entertaining elements, a language that they understand, a table where I can sit down comfortably and tell them what I want to share, so the spectators can play with the work, have fun with it, be surprised…and without realizing it they have a new story to tell, a new proposal, new doubts, new interests! The dialogue that I propose is based on the world of cinema. Up until now, all my exhibitions have been based around the seventh art, because I am passionate about cinema and inspired by it. It acts perfectly as the bridge that I’m seeking between the art and the viewer. Cinema

as a theme is a clear influence on Pop Art, which was the first movement to be inspired by and praise this art of the masses. In my latest exhibition; to recreate cinema and capture its essence, I made mobile sculptures, which consist of small pieces hanging from threads and painted in vibrant colours. These compositions become abstract with a spotlight projecting a shadowy figure. It creates a guessing game…who is going to appear out of the shadows? In searching the shadows, the figure of Cary Grant, Grace Kelly or James Stewart appears. The viewer wonders how can a frame from “Vertigo” or “The Birds” appear out of this abstraction while they continue remembering the experiences they had with these films and this actor or that actress. It’s a game of shadows, like Chinese shadow puppetry or Plato’s “Cave” or “Theory of Forms”, its only function is to fire the imagination, like cinema, to excite the emotions and create hope. Apart from Pop Art, whose influence is clear not only in the themes that run

through my work but also for the vivid colours I use, the spot colours and the use of clearly understandable figurative images, my work is also influenced by abstract art. Since there are a handful of amorphous figures and pieces that are hard to understand without the aid of a spotlight, my influences would include Paul Klee, Miró, Mondrian and a final mention of the mobile sculpture artist with the greatest impact in the history of art and on my own work: Alexander Calder. Is it difficult being an artist in Spain? I remember my grandfather saying to me, “You’re an artist? Is that a job?” Times haven’t changed that much. The art world in Spain is hard work because there isn’t the will to create a strong base for culture here. Art seems to be more of a political football than a problem to be solved. There doesn’t seem to be any real intention to create a strong, long – lasting cultural identity, rather like with the Spanish education system. That’s how this country works; the political parties look more after their own interests than those of their citizens. Of this current government, we can also look at negative effect of the IVA (VAT) tax rise to 21% and the lack of grants and aid. In this country, they say that if you want to be someone in the art world, you have to leave Spain in order to be recognized in Spain. Going back to your question, yes, it is

difficult to live just from art alone. I don’t know any young artists who are able to live exclusively from their art. They all have a JOB! In an article that I read recently, “How Does an Artist Live?” by Lucas Ospina, he begins his piece saying “An artist lives off the profit…”. It’s a piece that I highly recommend! Tell us about your latest exhibition in Valencia. It’s an exhibit based on the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock because he was a creator of lights and shadows in both his work and private life. His film work ranged from black & white films influenced by German expressionism to the big budget colour films of his American period. My work covers both of these eras in the black and white of the projected shadows and the colours of the mobile sculptures themselves. Another reason I chose the director is to recognize his influence and the performers he worked with. So, the exhibit reviews the Hitchcockian world, from lesser known actors like Maureen O’Hara, Shirley MacLaine and Joseph Cotton to recognized actors of the star system such as Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. I couldn’t ignore the Hitchcock films that had the greatest influence, like ‘The Birds’, ‘Psycho’, ‘North by Northwest’ and ‘Vertigo’. Finally, the director’s world helped me with the titles for my pieces, which allude to dialogue from the

films, quotes from the director himself, locations and architecture he used in his films and so on! It all gives a panoramic sense of the director who is known as the king of suspense! What are your plans for the future? After finishing each major project, I like to take a break to reflect on what progress I made, to see what open spaces I left, and what is the best point of departure for the next project. There are many ideas but I like my thoughts and reflections to give life and form to my projects. Obviously, I’m always working, looking for motifs with pencil and paper at hand. I am one of those people who believe that inspiration comes when you are working! Interview by Owl Contact details: www.luisriveralinares.blogspot.com/ twitter.com/luisriveralinar
