NO SPEAK ENGLISH “Learn English with 1,000 words!” “Phrasebook for all possible situations!” “Smartphone dictionary with 10 squillion entries!” Such phrases may at first look set to do translators, interpreters and language teachers out of a job, but far from it. In Spain, it is all too common to see a glaring need for translators and language tuition being ignored to the potential client’s peril, restaurant menus for tourists being the most famous and hilarious example. Then there are the businesspeople who are content to slip a phrasebook in their pocket before boarding their plane. And why not? The phrasebook has phrases for “all possible situations”, right? Take the shop: “Have you got this in blue/pink/purple/red, etc.?” Well, let’s see. Firstly, travelling men never go shopping for clothes, be it on business or holiday trips. And women never say “purple”. They say “maroon”, “burgundy” or “mauve”. But then admittedly there are more practical situations: “Could you tell me the way to the bank/ police station/hospital/crematorium?” There is a rising sense of anxiety as we imagine our unlucky tourist’s predicament: “I’d like to speak to the guide/the manager/a doctor/a lawyer.” “Do you have vitamin pills/aspirins/ plasters/antibiotics/bandages/the day after pill?” We can feel our hapless tourist’s panic rising as they find themselves forced to ask: “Have you seen my briefcase/keys/ wallet/passport/insulin/medical insurance documents/friend?” The tension mounts: “Could you help me with this form/stain/

lock/witness report/wound?” On flipping through the book on the plane, our traveller has an uneasy sensation of foreboding as they read: “I wonder if you could show me on the menu/map/suspects’ photos/X-ray/ missing persons list?” And then there is the lack of tenses. Rather than asking “Is that my train?”, they may well need to ask “Was that my train?”, “Is that my train leaving?” or “Is my train going to leave?”. As for train announcers, they may as well be speaking from the bottom of a swimming pool so our tourist can forget listening out for “Platform 4 at 8.15” and be prepared for a Glaswegian rendition of “Signal failure at Ashby-de-la-Zouch”, “Snow on the line at Aberystwyth” or “The driver felt poorly on changing at Slack Bottom and is catching forty winks”. And we cannot forget the eternal cultural trap. These guidebooks should prepare our beleaguered tourist to answer such apparently simple questions as “What are you looking at?”, particularly when uttered by a punk rocker sporting a green Mohican and padlock through his nose on a Friday night in Manchester. A Greek student once created quite a scene in a fast food restaurant by answering this question quite honestly (“I’m looking at you.”). Our innocent Greek friend was clearly unaware of the importance of intonation, another failing of many phrasebooks. They need to explain the huge gap between the sarcastic and polite intonations of “Excuse ME!”, “Do you MIND?” or “Thanks a LOT, pal”. (The reply to the latter could well be provided by that famous sign in a Moscow hotel: “If this is your first visit to Moscow, you’re welcome to it.”) Or how about simply warning them not to speak at all in certain situations? In Spain, it is common to bark a cheery “Hola!” to everyone in general on entering an elevator, then bid all your fleeting friends farewell on departing. In Harrods this would probably lead to the security guards being called.

And what is the point of including the phrase “Do you speak English?” if the conversation ends there? Our tourist would do as well to ask “Do I speak English?” to seek confirmation. Talking of which, CD / DVD crash courses in languages are another source of false security for our cheapskate business travellers. Whilst a thousand word vocabulary may well top the average local lexis in certain areas of London or New York (where, as Jackie Mason once said, “anyone who speaks good English must be a foreigner”), the pitfalls are obvious. There was the Catalan businessman who, on being asked about his daily routine, nonchalantly rattled off: “The first thing I do every morning is get up my wife.” That was a little more information than I needed, thank you VERY much (sarcastic intonation). Such subtle changes in word order may be vital. Watch the faces light up at the airport ticket office when you ask if there are any “free seats” on the next flight. And a little learning was certainly not enough for staff at an airline ticket office in Copenhagen: “We take your bags and send them in all directions.” Added to this, there are the cultural implications of vocabulary that such courses omit to mention. If you tell most Brits that you’ll “meet for dinner” and turn up at 10.00 p.m. as in Spain, your hosts will not be pleased. So our monolingual traveller may decide to put their trust in a smartphone dictionary, translator or interpreter. Today many claim to translate sentences by directly scanning a text or speaking a short sentence, with all the dangers of misreading / mishearing this entails. Thus we find phrases such as “Frozen crap (carp)”, or phrases taken out of context such as the Chinese gumball machine’s friendly cartoon character inviting kids to “suck my balls”. A jet-lagged, harried friend once unwisely decided to shove a whole job through a web translator with the intention of “smoothing out the wrinkles” afterwards. Unfortunately, he overlooked the

bibliography at the end and thus the text (which was recklessly sent on to the client without proofreading), was full of such colourful names as “Mr. Apple Tree (Manzano), Miss Orange Tree (Naranjo) and Mrs. Of the Forest (Del Bosque)”. It would have sounded like the electoral roll for Hobbiton if not for the incongruous Mr. Brake Shoe (Zapata) and the worrying Miss Bald (Calvo). Then there is the photo of a Chinese restaurant that spent the time, energy and money on producing the following classy sign above its premises: “Translate Server Error”. Pretty clear where they got that translation from, and too bad for them that they didn’t bother forking out a couple of extra yuan for a proper translator. Clearly, when using a smartphone or online dictionary, one must know how to use a dictionary in the first place. I daresay that even translations in the past would not have been helped with the gadget, judging by some of the most famous historical blunders, some of which are even to be found in the world’s best – selling book of all time. Most people know by now that the famous camel through the eye of the needle was not a camel at all, but a cable. So if professional translators are fallible, we cannot expect the average restaurant owner to do a good job of menus. Hence, countries that thrive on tourism really should take translation and language education more seriously if they are to avoid these gems: “Salad a firm’s own make; limpid red beer soup with cheesy dumplings in the form of a finger; roasted duck let loose; beef rashers beaten up in the country people’s fashion.” (No wonder they make such a racket in the kitchens.) – Poland. Coming (Meaning “Entrantes”, as in “Starter / First Course”). I can see our tired, confused tourist looking at their watch and asking the waiter: “Is my dish coming?” – Valencia, Plaza de la Virgen. of Vino en botella (“Wine in a bottle”), translated as “He came in bottle”. No comment. The other day I was taking a photo of a bar’s badly-written sign when the owner came out and took offence. (As a translator, I often publicise such mistakes to show people the need for my services, as I am doing with this article, tee-hee.) He had decided to give his bar an English name to sound more cool, but on being misspelled it was actually rather comical. He complained that it would cost him a lot of money to change all the logos on the signs, menus, etc., not to mention, presumably, the name of his small company. What a shame it hadn’t occurred to him to look in a dictionary for three seconds before investing all his money in producing badly-spelled materials. Presumably his graphic designers, sign – makers and producers don’t speak basic English, either, as they didn’t warn him. Or perhaps they are expecting him to pay them again for correcting the duff name. You may be thinking that this only occurs with small family – run businesses, but you’d be shockingly mistaken. A few years ago I was leafing through the glossy brochure of a five-star hotel in Valencia and was aghast at seeing simple spelling and vocabulary mistakes. The cheapest, single rooms at this hotel go for over 200 euros a night; the most expensive for over 1,000. So obviously, they’d be prepared to shell out 60 euros to get their advertising properly translated, right? Wrong. They were quite content to sound like Almodóvar at the Oscars ceremony and be laughed at by their own potential international customers. I sounded them out, and eventually even corrected it for them for free as a sign of good will and in the hope of future work. They haven’t called back. And their advertising still sounds like a Spanish Inspector Clouseau. Whilst we may find these language faults embarrassingly funny, it is a serious matter when big business honestly believes that with a smartphone, crash course or phrasebook they can do without a translator, interpreter or teacher. Spain receives a huge population of visitors every year in foreign tourists, yet the authorities still provide tourist information to make you chuckle: “Old mosque. Actually, it is a church.” (Well,

make your mind up.) After well over ten years in Valencia and several complaints to the relevant council department, I still see the same shoddy texts available to confused tourists, possibly translated by some civil servant’s relative, friend or trainee. I have rarely seen foreign-born or truly multilingual natives working for the tourist board, either. And I continue to see serious gaffes in signage. It is incredible to think that even big business ventures can go blindly ahead without pausing to think if what they are telling their customers is correct. There was the case of the Pope’s visit to the USA, for which a Miami T-shirt company printed a whole line saying “Yo vi la papa” (“I saw the potato”). A famous car manufacturer wondered why its Nova line of cars were causing such perplexity in South America, apparently unaware that “No va” means “It doesn’t go” in Spanish. Let’s face it, trusting a smartphone, electronic dictionary, CD, Google Translate or phrasebook alone instead of a translator who makes their living out of languages, for all the reasons above, is never going to work. No amount of technology will ever replace their cultural, human understanding of the contexts, the message being delivered and those who are going to receive it. The danger of paying no heed to this is perhaps best shown with some more vivid examples: In a Bangkok temple: “It is forbidden to enter a woman even a foreigner if dressed like a man.” In a laundry in Rome: “Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time.” And the one that beats all, and no doubt scares off most tourists: An ad for donkey rides in Thailand: “Would you like to ride your own ass?” No, I would certainly not, with the most indignant intonation I can muster. That’s another few baht lost for one budding Thai businessman.

TÓRTEL Tell us something about your experiences and musical influences. I’ve always been strongly influenced by American & British pop and rock. Especially when I began to be in bands in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, everyone wanted to sound like those bands we all liked so much. I’m talking about bands like Pavement, Blur, Yo La Tengo, also the Smiths or Talking Heads. Then you go looking for your own voice and sound. In my case, I was also discovering musicians from older generations, including from my city, who had been inspired by things that were also around me and I could identify a lot with them. How do you find Valencia and Spain to play, record and live as a musician? We are not in very positive times in economic terms. Obviously there are other priorities before spending money on a concert or buying a CD. It’s complicated. What is really bad is when culture is also neglected by the institutions and government. An economic crisis is terrible, especially if it also ends up affecting the cultural life of the country. Fortunately, even without any support, there are still many people taking the initiative to come up with interesting ideas and develop their creative projects within the limitations imposed on them. interesting things… so we can’t stop listening to the music that surrounds us. Tell us something about each new song from your new album, ‘La Gran Prueba’: La Gran Prueba It is the album’s title track. It talks about a subject that has always attracted me, namely the line separating fiction and reality, or how fiction is a good basis to continue creating fiction. Segundo Historia

It’s like a science fiction story about someone who is able to create, with the help of doctors and magicians, a magic potion to stop time. La Vieja Escuela On this record, there are several references to secret societies, communities living in their own world. This song is about that. El Rayo Mortal Maybe those who know Daniel Clowes’s comic may feel this song does not have much to do with it, but this song is about the graphic comic of the same name. No Es Mi Culpa This song is about a friendship that lasts

for years and years, sometimes with good times and others that aren’t so good. For me, my childhood is closely linked to the tune of Donovan’s song “Colours” because it was played a lot in my house when I was a kid. The melody of my song was inspired by Donovan’s song. Queríamos Más It’s the song with the most Latin rhythm on the record. I’m very interested in exploring other rhythms and getting away from the standard 4/4 time. The rhythm of this song is similar to a cumbia. El Baile Extraño It is one of the songs that I’m most happy with. Sometimes when you record in the studio, you find sounds and nuances later when mixing that you were not expecting and you get hooked on the new sounds. They are like little ‘big discoveries’ and this song really got me. Canto Oscuro, Canto Claro The song is like a cha-cha-chá, and related a bit to what I said earlier about the possibility of making the songs richer by being open to different rhythms that are more Latino in origin, for example. Fantasmas I think it’s a good song to close the album and possibly the most intimate song on the record. It also has a bit of mystery, the lyrics speak of skeletons &

ghosts and there’s a lot of reverb on the guitars and clavichord. Does eternal love exist? Yes, it does. What are your plans for 2014 and 2015?

Arroz al horno (Oven Baked rice) By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland, is meant to have told his troops that shortly before walloping the English at Bannockburn in 1314. Apt advice for this recipe, Arroz al horno (Arrós al forn in Valenciano) that has thwarted me a few times! So to truly get to grips with the matter, I headed to the hills for a master class with Amparo from Casa Rural Amarain. Arrós al forn is a classic Valencian dish, often overshadowed by paella. It is cooked in the oven in a terracotta dish. Although any round ovenproof dish will do, the size is crucial. You want to have enough room once you have added the stock for all the flavours to be absorbed into the rice, without the rice becoming soggy or worse, dry at the bottom and overcooked on top. Having selected the correct dish for the number of people you are serving, stick closely to the recipe below. The ideal terracotta dish size for these quantities is 32 cm.

Arroz al Horno (Oven baked rice for 4 people) Ingredients • 2 whole morcilla sausages (blood sausages, normal size), cooked whole • 1 large potato, peeled and sliced • 1 large tomato, sliced • 1 tomato, grated (without skin) • 1 head garlic, unpeeled • 1/2 kilo mix of pork ribs and pancetta, chopped • Olive oil • 5 large tablespoons / 100 gm paella rice (bomba rice) • Chicken stock, 2 large tablespoons to every measure of rice (i.e., 10 of stock to 5 of rice) • Salt • 1 dessert spoon turmeric • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1/2 jar cooked chickpeas, soaked first

Preparation Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan. Fry the potatoes a little, remove from pan. Fry the ribs and pancetta well with a little salt, remove from pan. Fry the morcilla, remove from pan. In the same oil on low heat, fry the grated tomato; add the rice, turmeric and paprika. Stir a little to coat the rice in the tomato and spices. Remove from heat. Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F / Gas mark 3 In a separate pan, bring the stock up to boil with the head of garlic. Season with salt and add a little turmeric. Put the rice in your terracotta with the chickpeas. Pour in the hot stock, measuring carefully and place the head of garlic in the centre. Next arrange the meat, slices of cut tomato and the lightly fried potatoes. Place the rice, being careful not to burn

yourself, in the centre of the pre – heated oven. Cook for 20 minutes and then lower the temperature to 150C / 300F /Gas mark 2 for a further 40 minutes. Be careful not to overbake the rice. Remove from the oven and leave to rest before cooking. As temperatures possibly lower with the arrival of autumn, this is a hearty,

warming and truly Valencian dish to enjoy and share with friends. MEDITERRÁNEA DE HAMBURGUESAS There was a time when it was hard / almost impossible to get a good burger in Valencia. The choice was limited to fast food joints and a couple of chains that sold burgers that sometimes bore no relation to meat. I love a really good burger, made from prime beef, seared and caramelised on the outside and pink on the inside. Delicious! So when 24/7 Valencia’s editor proposed this month’s restaurant, I will admit to being slightly nervous about what we were about to encounter. Mediterránea de Hamburguesas has been open just opposite the Mercado Central for almost a year, having already been established very successfully for four years in the hip barrio of Ruzafa. This new location is great – its brick walls and funky lighting with shabby – chic chairs and tables give it an authentic lived-in feel. There’s a great playlist going on, too, just loud enough for individual tracks to be heard (there’s nothing more annoying to me than when the music is almost there and you have to strain to make out the song!). Eugenio was our server for the evening. Bursting with energy, friendly and extremely efficient, he informed us that Bruno, the owner, and he had decided we should choose our burger. In exchange, he brought us our starter, a combo that consisted of a chunky guacamole with homemade corn chips, pakoras (cooked to a recipe from Tariq, an Indian restaurant in Godella) served with a raita, and free – range chicken nuggets with a barbecue sauce and horseradish mayo. All were great and as

we ate, we read the menu and chose the ‘Japonesa’ and the ‘Chicago’ from the long list of burgers. There are a good selection of sandwiches and salads on offer, but we were here for the burgers! Free range and sustainable is the ethos at Mediterránea de Hamburguesas – all Bruno’s meat is reared on open farms in the Valles del Esla, León, and you can really tell. All the while we were eating and choosing our main course, Eugenio and the rest of the staff were busy serving a constant stream of diners, and the place was soon buzzing. Then he took our order, and for the ‘Chicago’ he wanted to know what kind of meat, ternera or buey (veal or beef). There is also a choice of breads, American poppy seed, coca valenciana, ciabatta and gluten – free (1.20€ extra). For the ‘Japonesa’, (simple but fabulous, veal seasoned with soya, ginger, sesame, a lovely Japanese mayo, lettuce and tomato, 9.90€), D chose Mediterráneo bread and for my Chicago (delicious beef beautifully charred, cheddar cheese, lettuce, generous amount of crispy bacon, tomato, caramelised onions and gherkin, 9.40€), I chose the American bread. Both burgers were delicious, we ordered them medium rare and they were perfectly cooked. We accompanied our food with a very reasonable Martín Berduga, Ribero del Duero (14.50€ a bottle). Make no mistake, the food portions are generous. By the time we’d ploughed through our burgers, there was little room for much else but after a short wait, not one, but three desserts were brought

to the table. It would be difficult to say which was the best! All were fabulous, Coulant de chocolate, (a hot chocolate pudding with a molten centre) an individual Tatin de manzana (apple tart) and a toffee cheesecake (all 4.20€). But we couldn’t finish them! Mediterránea de Hamburguesas describes itself as a gourmet hamburger restaurant and it is a good description. Great atmosphere, great food and great service. MON VALENCIA Just a brief hop, skip and jump from Plaza del Ayuntamiento…Mon Valencia is easy to find and getting a great name for itself in 2014. Set on two floors with a modern yet warm interior, this is a perfect restaurant for groups as Mon has the capacity for 200 customers! On a sunny Saturday afternoon, a couple of the 24/7 Valencia team discovered it has an ample downstairs bar where you can have a beer, wine or gin & tonic and follow a live football match or music video. At the back, leading onto a quiet pedestrian street there is an attractive, mellow outdoor terrace for lunch or dinner. On the spacious first floor, there are plenty of tables with dining for couples and groups. Upstairs has a great window view for people watchers as the figuras stroll down the legendary C/ San Vicente, so it’s where we chose to have lunch. Incidentally, ‘Mon’ is the Valenciano word for ‘world’…and there is a gentle sophistication to this place. The cosmopolitan, black – shirted staff were naturally friendly and helpful, both upstairs and downstairs. We chose to enjoy a lunch and shared our different dishes, so we were both able to get a good idea of the quality and variety of the cuisine here. Our tasty starters were fluffy Croquetas de jamón filled with ham and mushrooms. We also enjoyed a fresh Ensalada mezclum con mozzarella, cherry, bacon, picatostes, berenjena, which was a lovingly presented salad filled with colour & flavours like the fresh and distinctive taste of cherry tomatoes, bits of bacon, eggplant and more. We let Daniel, our helpful and informed Uruguayan waiter recommend their main course speciality of Meloso arroz pescado, which was a tasty and filling soupy rice dish with prawns in a fish sauce. He tells us that their duck & mushrooms meloso is another one to try. We then shared a delightful, succulent salmon dish (plenty of Omega-3 for the healthy) with red pepper, rinds of potato and potato purée. We finished off with a refreshing little postre dessert of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, which was elegantly presented with raspberry and herb. The daily menu changes every day but you will always find quality rice, meat and fish dishes available. Following our weekend lunch, we popped in again midweek for a riveting live flamenco set with dancers, guitar and singing by the internationally renowned ‘San Juan Flamenca’ collective. It was truly joyous night with some of the crowd joining the dancers at the end. The show is currently on from 22.00h – 23.30h most nights. Mon’s creative director in the kitchen is chef Massimiliano Ratti and his expertise is reflected in the quality of the products as well as the artistic presentation. It is top quality Mediterranean cuisine with touches of the exotic. The portions are neither small nor large, and this makes for a balanced meal over the course of a nicely stretched – out lunch or dinner. To accompany our menú del día, we chose a couple of glasses each of the house red (1.40€ a glass), which was a smooth Hoya de Cadenas from the Utiel – Requena area of the Valencia

Dale Fisher: Ironman for Cancer At 07.00h on Sunday 26 October, Gandía Beach will see approximately 800 slightly crazy sports fanatics set off on a 226 km (141 mile) journey! This will be the first Ironman distance triathlon coming to Valencia. For those taking part, there is a maximum of 17 hours to complete the gruelling course, which consists of swim, bike and run of the following distances in immediate succession: Swim: 3.8 km / 2.4 miles (open water – sea) Bike: 180 km / 112 miles (road bike) Run: 42 km / 26.2 miles (a quick marathon to finish off!!) Those competitors who have not managed to complete the course in the 17 hours (by midnight, to put it another way!) will be stopped by the race organization and, if so inclined, will have to come back and try again another day. For one expat resident of Valencia, however, this day is not just about Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

completing in a very long triathlon. It’s about fulfilling a promise to a friend and fundraising for cancer. Dale Fisher has been living in Valencia for just over 10 years and will be taking part in memory of his childhood school friend, Lucy Hutchinson, who died of cancer in January this year at just 39 years old. Dale and Riff Hutchinson (Lucy’s husband) both moved to Valencia in 2004 with ‘Future Fibres’, a rigging company involved with the America’s Cup. Both of Lucy and Riff’s children, Luke and Millie, were born in Valencia and the family were settled here with Lucy working at Cambridge House school when the devastating news came last July. Before she died, Dale told Lucy that he would be taking part in an Ironman event to raise money for cancer and Lucy chose the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. They both went to school together on the Isle of Wight, the home of the charity. The trust helps children and young people recovering from cancer after they have been through some of the most aggressive and traumatic medical treatment. The psychological and physical distress suffered during

cancer treatment is terrible for anyone but especially the young. I also hope to have a fundraiser event in the Portland Ale House and/or St Patrick’s in a few weeks.” When asked about training, Dale said; “This has actually been a lot more of a commitment and sacrifice than I thought when I originally signed up for it. I’ve been training seriously for over four months now (only one more to go, thankfully) but it’s the other sacrifices as well. EXPECTATIONS HIGH AT MESTALLA September started well for the city’s football supporters when the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia of Levante UD played host to the 2016 European qualifying match between Spain and Macedonia. There was also the added bonus of Valencia’s latest goal – scoring sensation, Paco Alcácer, making his full international debut in the game. The local boy did not disappoint his army of fans by notching the second goal in the 5-1 rout of the Balkan side. The following weekend Alcácer was on the mark again, this time for his club when scoring the third goal in Valencia’s 3-1 victory over the usually consistent Espanyol. Pablo Piatti has received regular playing time so far this season and rewarded his manager’s faith with the seventh – minute opener against the club from Barcelona, and then club captain Dani Parejo doubled the lead just after the hour mark. The only downside to the impressive performance was the needless spot kick that Los Chés conceded in injury time, but three goals and three points sent the majority of the “blanquinegre” fans home happy. Valencia’s next match was just outside

Madrid at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and a confrontation with Getafe. The Monday night fixture saw former “Curva Nord” favourite Vicente Guaita get a warm reception from the travelling fans, but inside seven minutes he was picking the ball out of the net as that man Alcácer struck again. Both players come from Torrent and were together in the Valencia youth system so it was particularly sweet for the striker to get the better of his friend and former teammate. The goal had an element of luck about it, though, because it seemed to be a miscue from Alcácer that created an unusual angle on the effort that just beat Guaita on his far post. The goal scorer then turned provider when he played a neat one – two with André Gomes that the Portuguese midfielder converted easily to give the visitors a two – goal cushion at half time. Valencia went three goals to the good when a mazy run from Sofiane Feghouli ended in the Algerian international being upended in the penalty box by a Getafe defender, giving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

However, Sergio Canales levelled for the home side just short of half – time. The former Valencia favourite was not closed down quickly enough by the defenders and hit a dangerous looking ball into the six – yard box. Several players from both sides looked to get a touch to the ball but it evaded everyone, including the keeper, and nestled into the net at the far post. PRESERVING MEMORY

From the tumbledown houses of Valencia to 19th Century American prisons, Maria Jesus Gonzalez and Patricia Gomez are on a quest to ensure the memory of abandoned buildings is kept alive. Thomas Irvin reports on their unique brand of art. Whenever a building is pulled down and destroyed, there is a loss. The place it once was is gone forever. Its memory for future generations usually only lives on in a few photographs if anything at all. In Valencia, though, local artists Maria Jesus Gonzalez and Patricia Gomez have succeeded in maintaining the memory of abandoned buildings in a more concrete manner. It all started when they met at Art College and discovered they had a mutual love of ruins and old buildings, which were soon to be demolished. They decided that they would like to find a way to make some sort of a record for posterity of the interior of these places. They discovered, by chance, a unique way of doing this - by sticking large pieces of canvas or cloth onto the surfaces of walls and literally pulling off the walls’ outer surface and creating an Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

imprint on the canvas. These canvases are then displayed in their exhibitions in an attempt to recreate the interiors of the ruined buildings (often houses or prisons), adding photographs, videos and sound recordings where necessary. They first tried out this technique in 2002 while visiting Albacete. There, they found some houses in abandoned villages and decided to do some small prints of sections of the walls. These pieces were a mere 2 x 2 metres; it was an early, experimental phase for the artists. Following on from this, things started to grow, as indeed did the size of their prints. Their canvases were now 5 x 5 metres. They concentrated their efforts back in their hometown Valencia, going into a house, which was about to be demolished in the El Carmen area (the central old town) for a local exhibition. After this success, they moved on to the El Cabanyal area (the old part of town near Valencia´s main beach) where they spent a whole year going into a series of houses, which were about to be pulled down. Their canvases were so large by this time that they covered the entire walls so they were able to take prints of whole rooms. The next step for them was abandoned prisons. It took them a long time, but finally they got permission to carry out a project in a prison in Valencia. This led to

further work in Palma prison (which was about to be closed down) where they did a workshop with the last remaining prisoners and witnessed their final days in the cells. As their reputation grew, so did their renown. In 2011, America called, and they were asked to do a project in an abandoned prison in Philadelphia (Holmesburg). Their much-acclaimed exhibition followed suit in 2012 in the nearby Moore Gallery. To get a taster of what they do, head down to the Espaivisor gallery in the El Carmen old town of Valencia where a selection of the work they carried out in Valencia from 2005 to 2010 is currently on show till mid-November. LA EDAD DE ORO One of the great things about Valencian nightlife is the number of bars and clubs run and owned by the people who work in them, not plastic franchises but labours of love with their own special character. First in the Carmen and now in a more spacious locale in Distrito 8, La Edad de Oro has been a popular part of the Valencia scene for nearly 20 years. Music and the arts have always been at the heart of the venture and now, in the bigger space, they have been able to expand and develop it. We spoke to owner Juanjo who, along with his wife Reme, has really stamped his personality on the place How and when was La Edad de Oro born? La Edad de Oro opened in 1996, in the ground floor space of a recently restored 17th century building. Pedro Porcel and I opened it. We already had La Marxa together with some other partners and we’d set up Continental back in 1985, which had been a pioneering venue for live concerts from the era of the ‘movida’. Later Pedro had to leave the partnership for work reasons and now it’s my wife, Reme Maldonado, and me. The original Edad de Oro was in the Carmen but you moved a few years ago to a new site in Distrito 8. Why did you make the change? Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

Because the old place had limited space which didn’t allow us to have live music, we had to limit ourselves to smaller cultural activities like book presentations, exhibitions and auctions of vintage articles (which was our best – known activity). It was also partly due to the problems which are part and parcel of the Carmen; the crowds, the neighbours, pressure from the police, so we decided to up sticks and look for a bigger place that would fit our style. After a lot of searching, we found a pub called El Viejo Almacén in C/ San Jacinto, which ticked all the boxes both aesthetically and from the perspective of its potential for activities and events. It’s just off Gran Vía Fernando el Católico in the Juan Llorens district and about a five minute walk from Torres de Quart. How have things changed since the move? Do you still see the old customers and friends from the Carmen? What differences have you noticed between one barrio and the other? The main changes have been down to the location; before we were right in the middle of it all with all the passing trade that that brings, now people have to come to us especially. That inspires our imagination, we are forced to be creative and dynamic, to organize events and shows which will attract a loyal public

and will be worth people’s while coming over to see us. We also put a great deal of effort into the choice of music, something I’m personally in charge of. We still, of course, visit the Carmen to see old friends and keep up to date with what’s going on there. The neighbourhood where we are now is perfect for us because we are very close to both the Carmen and Juan Llorens, within easy walking distance of both. What is the secret behind so many years of success? There is no single secret of success; it’s mostly about combining people’s tastes with a good vibe and good service at a reasonable price. The programme of events, the choice of music and excellent management by my wife Reme of the bar and public relations in general complete the picture. And now the inevitable question for any business nowadays. How are you dealing with the recession? The recession has had its effect, an important effect, and anyone who doesn’t acknowledge that is blind. For most people the employment situation is really unstable which means they are not able to live their leisure time to the fullest. The fear of unemployment and

economic problems loom large. Luckily, we are gradually finding our feet again, but naturally it has a big influence. In our case, we haven’t raised prices in the last seven years and at the same time we have to take the hit of 21% VAT both on what we sell and what we buy, which has left many places in our business and similar businesses like cinemas and theatre in a state of ruin. What is the life of the owner of a popular pub in Valencia? What are the most common day-to-day problems? Although the real activity of the bar is Thursday and the weekend, work takes up the whole week, organizing the gigs, coordinating the free – entry jam sessions which we host every Thursday, and meetings with suppliers, social networks and publicity. You have always been staunch supporters and promoters of live

music. Have there been any gigs at La Edad de Oro that you particularly remember? Gigs to remember? There have been loads ...The Fleshtones, Malevaje, Jaime Urrutia, Ariel Rot as a very special guest, were all fantastic. But I have to mention one musician who came to a Thursday jam session, an ageing Dutch saxophonist who happened to be passing through Valencia and fancied a bit of a jam. It turned out he was a jazz star in his own right and had played with all the greats, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, etc. It was a real honour to have him play in our bar.
