ARTISTS IN VALENCIA

LISA JANE BIRCH Lisa Jane Birch is a young Scottish artist who graduated from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, Scotland. After graduating, she moved to Valencia where she has been living and working on her art ever since. Using Fineliner pens to build up her drawings layer by layer, Lisa writes almost imperceptibly. Creating abstract illustrations made of text; the drawings are built up slowly around the ideas of the thought process. More broadly, how we use languages as tools for communication and how we communicate what we receive from the world around us. She is about to have her first solo art exhibit in the city this month. So we sat in her kitchen in the Barrio del Carmen, had a cup of tea, and talked about her art and what it’s like being an artist in Valencia. What motivates or inspires your work? I’m quite obsessed with formulas and what goes on in the brain. Before I went to art school I wanted to study maths, I wanted to study psychology and I

wanted to study sociology. I couldn’t decide but I also really loved art and then I got accepted into art school and decided I couldn’t really turn it down. However, even though by going to art school I learned a lot of techniques and a lot from other artists, these themes were the continuing inspiration. What is your creative process? I feel influenced very much by my surroundings. For example, over the summer I spent a month in Berlin and then a few weeks back home in Scotland. I came back and found myself in my old flat in Valencia and so much had just happened that I felt I really needed discipline back in my life. So I just started working, to get a routine back. It’s kind of a psychological process, I guess. I love reading what people say, what politicians say, what philosophers say and what impact that has on society and also what doesn’t. I mean, I’m just an artist, I’m not a philosopher or a politician but I feel I need to express myself. Although I do have a creative side to me, I’m quite a shy person but I need to get out what’s going on in my head. Otherwise I’d go crazy. So that’s why I write like that, over and over itself, because I want to express myself but I don’t want people to be able to read what I’ve written. I’d be mortified! Do you find that your work has changed much since moving to and

living in Valencia? Yes, it has. I first came on an Erasmus exchange (university exchange programme) and it got me thinking about language. How can I explain? Sometimes, when I was telling someone a story, it almost felt as if I was telling them a different story because of the feeling of using a different language. Like, not a character change, but something more subtle than that. This followed on from being Scottish and speaking Scots English, and sometimes feeling that when you use English you don’t always really feel like yourself, like it’s not your own voice. The feeling that you can’t express yourself perfectly, especially because I’ve always had that in my family because my mum’s English and I spent a lot of time in England. Sometimes it feels like when I speak in Spanish that I can express myself more honestly, because it feels like I’m just telling a story. If that makes sense? What are the benefits of being an artist in Valencia? Would you recommend other young Scottish or British artists to come here? I think it’s quite difficult so far as selling art and making a living out of it, especially nowadays, because of the crisis people aren’t really buying as much art. However, it is a good place to be able to make your work. I feel that coming from the UK, personally as an artist I don’t

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

feel very free there. I think here people are less consumerist and that it’s more about enjoying life. It’s more relaxed, and, it’s not that people worry less; it’s that people worry less about things that actually aren’t important. So I think it’s a good place to work in because I think it allows you to be freer because people are less judgemental here and you can be a freer person, so that definitely helps with art. Interview by Robbie Hurley You can see Lisa Jane Birch’s art at Wayco, C/ Gobernador Viejo, 29, Ciutat Vella (centro histórico) from 14 November – 5 December. Free entry. Sais

J. Guerrero Gonzo in Vegas

JUPITER LION 21st century Spanish krautrock trio in Valencia? There’s more to it than that. In a café bar by Ruzafa Market in Valencia, we caught up with Jupiter Lion’s main man Sais for a beer and a chat about his band’s driving second album, ‘Brighter’ (2014). Their debut, ‘Silver Mouth’ (2013), was described as “hypnotic” by America’s Spin magazine and a “post – krautrock delight” by Britain’s The Guardian. Even the Financial Times (!) remarked that Jupiter Lion were “a channel connecting 1970s Cologne to the modern – day Mediterranean.” Jupiter Lion are: Gonzo in Vegas (drums), J. Guerrero (bass), Sais (machines). Where did you get the name Jupiter Lion? Some people wrongly think it’s some kind of far-out, psychedelic, space – like reference to our music. The cold truth is that it is a name of a lion from an animal refuge in Colombia, South America. You can see a clip of it on YouTube with the Jupiter Lion being very cariñoso (affectionate) with its trusted carer. Who knows, it might be ferocious in a cage with those it doesn’t know! Tell us something about your musical background. Back in 1999, I first started DJing ‘downbeat’ (105 bpm or less) during Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

my times in Formentera in the Balearic Islands. During my time in Düsseldorf in Germany, I learnt some of the language and I was spinning hip-hop, post – punk and IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). In Spain, I’ve been a DJ at Sonar in Barcelona as well as Le Club, Excuse Me!, Flow and Observatori in Valencia. Our drummer was also a DJ for over a decade, spinning many styles including Belgian beat and EBM (Electronic Body Music). The bassist was playing in an indie band in the 90s. He loves ‘old school’ hip-hop but he comes from rock ’n’ roll. So, you could say that Jupiter Lion is 2 DJs and a rocker coming together to make an interesting sound! What are your influences? I first heard krautrock music at a friend’s house back in 2002. It really caught my attention as I had been making uninspired demos at this point and I saw this inspiring music as an opening to another world. There was a pastoral beauty to it. Krautrock bands like Can and Neu! were big influences. Bands like Holy Fuck and Boards of Canada are influences, too. Mark Hollis of Talk Talk is an influence but you can’t necessarily hear it in our music. We love to travel and we’ve just come back from a tour of Spain that included the cities of Barcelona, Málaga, Cádiz, San Sebastian and Valencia. People in the south of Spain are perhaps just a tad more expressive during the concerts but we have had the same very positive and loyal responses all over Spain during the

post – show interactions with fans. We like to visit the places we play, eat well in the local restaurants and we’ll make a stop en route if we spot somewhere interesting and worth checking out within the limited time of touring. Tell us about a few of the tracks on your new Jupiter Lion album, ‘Brighter’. The album was recorded in Sountess studio in Alfafar (Valencia) and produced by Pablo Peiró. In past interviews, we’ve found that we’re not really any good at describing our music. Given that it’s mostly instrumental, we prefer the listeners to make up their own minds about what the songs mean. I will say that there was a lot of marijuana smoked during the making of the album! Brighter There is a voice on this track but we use it as one more instrument in our sound. There is singing about spirits and shadows and it’s deliberately ambiguous so as to keep some mystery to the music. Sigur Rós and Cocteau Twins also made up their own language on their songs to good effect! Ashes This has an Arabic feel. I’d been listening to Armenian musician Djivan Gasparyan and this melody fell into place while smoking a joint and messing around on the keyboards. I had to record it on the spot otherwise it could have been forgotten. My father died this year and

his ashes were spread so it is in memory of him. He was Valencian born and bred and my mother is from Aruba, a Caribbean island near Venezuela and part of the former Dutch Antilles. Lost Cannibal It’s the last song on the album and, as the closer, was only supposed to be about a minute and a half long but it ended up going on for over 12 minutes! It’s a really strange rhythm track, inspired by but not sounding like a soundtrack from an Alan Parker film, the workingclass London film director. If you listen carefully, the bass lines are very Spanish in a flamenco-ish way. What are your plans for the future? Our record label will be promoting our latest album in Germany, Britain and the USA so we have plans to play abroad in 2015, hopefully in the spring. We make a living when touring but it’s very difficult to live all year round as a musician. For the future, the ideal would be to get our music involved in synch with advertising and film soundtracks where you can really make a living if you’re lucky.

FOOD

FLAPJACKS

By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Known as flapjacks in the UK and granola, cereal or muesli bars in other countries, whatever you call them they are impossible to resist. “The flap is back” is the cry of glee by those working at La Ola Fresca when flapjacks appear and strangely, they seem to disappear as fast as they are made. Flapjacks are often viewed as a healthy snack but actually, when you add up the calories of a pack of butter and a handful of sugar, a nutritionist might possibly disagree! However, they do contain oats for slow energy release throughout the day and a good source of fibre, plus the added benefits of seeds and nuts to your liking. You can also replace the butter with sunflower oil, but that’s not quite so fun. As golden syrup is not so available in Spain, here it is replaced with honey but, for a lower glycaemic index and if your purse strings will allow, you could use agave syrup.

Flapjacks Ingredients • 1 K Porridge oat flakes (copos de avena) • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (canela) • 2 teaspoons ginger • 8 oz / 250 gm butter • Pinch of salt • Squeeze of lemon • 1 cup dried fruits (add a little of what you like; dates, sultanas) • 1/2 cup sesame seeds • 3/4 cup honey or other syrup (golden, agave, maple) • 2 oz / 60 gm brown sugar

• Baking tray 29.5 cm x 26 cm

Heat the oven to 180

leave in the tin to cool completely.

Mix all the dry ingredients, except the brown sugar, in a big bowl. Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan. Add the honey or syrup and brown sugar. Stir gently, being careful not to let the mixture boil. Add the salt and squeeze of lemon. Put greaseproof paper in the baking tray Mix all the ingredients well and place in the baking tray. Using a spatula or cake slice, flatten the mixture down well into the tin, beating it as flat as possible. This is to ensure that your flapjack does not break up when you lift it from the tin.

They will keep for at least a week in a sealed tin. Ready-to-eat energy aids to keep you going through the day. That’s if someone hasn’t got there before you!

Bake near the top of the oven and check after 5-10 minutes to see whether it needs moving down to avoid burning. The flapjacks should be ready after approximately 20 minutes of cooking, when they are golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for a few minutes before cutting. Then

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Owner Jorge of Alkazar

ALKAZAR If you walk from the Plaza de Toros or Estación del Norte (Valencia’s beautiful Art Nouveau train station) down the Passeig de Russafa, a street filled with shops and restaurants, towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, you will find a tiny pedestrian street on your right next to the Lys Cinema. That street is home to three restaurants, and one of them is the Taberna Alkázar Restaurant and Hotel. All three restaurants vie for business with beautifully laid tables on the street and well – upholstered, comfortable chairs. All three have impressive displays of food in their windows, one featuring hams while the Alkázar and the restaurant directly opposite spotlight live seafood. Our restaurant this month is the Taberna Alkázar, a marisquería / arrocería (seafood and rice restaurant) which first opened its doors in 1950 and has been open daily since then. It has those tables on the street and also offers three fine themed dining rooms and a long bar where they are happy to serve you delicious tapas and great wines. As Valencia seems of late to have opted for only two seasons, summer and winter, it was still a warm and balmy night though we were in late October, so we opted to sit outside and eat al fresco. The atmosphere was lively and buzzing as all three restaurants had all their tables on the street full. Tourists, business people and obvious regulars were feasting on great looking food as we were shown to our table. I also noticed a couple enjoying tapas at the bar inside. We decided to forego an aperitif and went

straight for a bottle of the house Rioja, a Viña Bujanda Madurado 2011, a tasty, full bodied 100% Tempranillo. We were soon eating a starter of delicious Jamón serrano (21€) accompanied by masses of pan Catalan (toasted baguette with tomato and garlic olive oil). Next came a small platter of mixed fried fish, boquerones, salmonete and puntillas (anchovies, baby red mullet and baby squid) all perfectly cooked in a light batter (16.50€). Our main course was a rice dish – a meloso version of traditional Valencian paella (17€ a head). In this version the rice is served in a tureen, wet and soupy. Literally translated, meloso means “sweet” but in conjunction with rice it means “creamy” or “soupy” (rice can also be served caldoso, which is an even wetter version). It makes a nice change from the traditional paella. Though it still has all the ingredients of Valencian paella – chicken, rabbit, butter beans, garrafón beans (a local variety of string beans) and artichokes – it makes it a different meal. It was excellent and enormous, we could have shared it with another couple! In fact the Dutch couple at the next table asked what we were eating and we could have offered them more than just a taste. We made a good show of it, though, and managed to eat quite a lot. We had by now eaten quite a lot so took a short rest to make room for postres. We chatted and watched the world and food go by. The Alkázar specialises in both seafood and rice, their star dish is a seafood platter which is laden with wonderful crustaceans and weighs in at 130€ for two people (it includes a bottle of Marina Alta wine). The menu is quite extensive and there is something for everyone. Great fish and seafood, steaks and lamb and a large

selection of starters, tapas and salads. There is also a selection of rice dishes on offer; in addition to the Valencian there is seafood, shrimp or lobster. We were finally ready for a dessert, D chose stewed apple and I chose the ubiquitous ‘flan’ (a crème caramel on the menu in almost every restaurant in the country) – this one was very good indeed and homemade. D’s stewed apple was excellent and quite different as it was peeled. We continued to people watch for a few more minutes and left, feeling just a little bit full, and walked some of it off on the walk home. OCHO Y MEDIO Set in the historic centre of Valencia, 8½ is named after Italian director Federico Fellini’s surreal and legendary film, which was voted amongst the 10 greatest peliculas ever made by the British Film Institute. It’s fitting, therefore, that the prestigious Michelin Guide has recommended this restaurant every year since 2009 and again in 2014. With a beautiful and ample terraza overlooking Plaza Lope de Vega and the church of Santa Catalina, this is a relaxing place to dine in the evening or afternoon. The interior is a soft – lit combination of warm reds, browns, greens and blues with a jazz theme lining the walls as well as a jazzy soundtrack to match. Expect to hear timeless Billie Holiday or other ‘40s and ‘50s tunes often wafting gently in the background. We chose a chilled out midweek autumn night to enjoy a dinner for two upstairs with a beautiful view of the old town by our window. Francesco was our charming and informed head host, the only member of the warm and helpful staff not clad in trendy black! As an aperitif, we were toasted with a couple of glasses of cava, which was refreshing and gave us some breathing space as we were lost for choice with the ample carta. Foie is a speciality here and their carpaccios (thinly sliced raw meat or fish) are also elegantly presented, as befits a restaurant known for combining imaginative cuisine with fresh Mediterranean products. By the way, you will find the menu in Spanish, English and Italian. For our starter, we decided to share an Ensalada de canónigos (a salad with

mozzarella cheese, manchego cheese, cherry tomatoes, bacon and pumpkin seeds) and found the serving neither too large nor too small; it was a healthy option that was fresh and tasty without being too filling. We avoided the Ibérico ham and cheese options as starters, thereby saving our appetite for what was to come with the main courses. We shared a bottle of one of our favourite Riojas, a Ramón Bilbao Crianza; it was cherry red, clean and not too intense. A wine that really satisfies but doesn’t distract from the cuisine. For our main course, we considered a cod fish dish and their lobster creamy rice plato but in the end we couldn’t resist both plumping for meat dishes on this sultry autumn evening. Our host recommended their specialty Ternera estofado al vino (Stewed beef in wine), which was beautifully presented atop a smooth potato purée and was wonderfully tender with the wine adding to the rich flavour. We also delighted in sharing their Cordero confitado, finding that the lamb was nice and soft but not overly so. The confiture combined well with the purée and the flavour wasn’t overbearing in any way. Getting the balance right in terms of the textures as well as an attractive presentation makes for really pleasurable dining. It is really no surprise that this restaurant is so popular with the more upmarket, select crowd of locals as well as discerning visitors. For our dessert, we couldn’t resist sharing a sexy and imaginative Gazpacho de frutos rojos. It was a delicious combination of fresh red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries) with a fruity coulis sauce to smooth the edge. It was lovingly fused with a cool vanilla ice cream. A treat for the palate and nice to look at, too. To finish off, we delved into a luxurious Semifrio al Grand Marnier, which was a

dark chocolate in cognac with a French ganache (chocolate and cream) sauce that made it a multi – layered delight. Throughout the meal, the service was kindly, helpful, unhurried, informative yet discreet. We were left to dine in peace and we spent a good few hours wining and dining and admiring the view. INTRAMURS

Festival for art in Valencia Valencia INTRAMURS Festival is a multidisciplinary art project and festival for the promotion of contemporary art and urban culture in the old town or Ciutat Vella, specifically in the area located within the ancient walls of Valencia. It will take place from 7 – 16 November. The objective of the INTRAMURS festival is clear. First, we are using it as a launching point for new and emerging artists by providing a space in which to show their work. We also want to boost the historic centre of Valencia culturally and commercially by showcasing its artistic and artisanal past and involving residents, tourists and businesses in the local neighbourhood. In addition to the projects presented, the artists in the neighbourhood will open their workshops and studios during the Festival so that we can see their work and workplaces. The festival will be taking place in streets, gardens and squares such as Plaza Redonda, Plaza Viriato and the Plaza del Carmen. Open – air plots like the Solar Corona, Solar Bomba, balconies, galleries, studios and shops, bars and restaurants will be filled with art Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

and activities designed so we can enjoy art and culture to the max in everything we visit. The Ciutat Vella will become a unique exhibition space, a showcase and stage, a blank canvas for promoting artistic expression and civic participation. There will be painting and photography exhibitions, happenings and performances, live music, urban interventions, dance, poetry, fashion, children’s workshops, conferences, routes featuring window dressing, video art and more! The Valencia INTRAMURS Festival is directed by Salvia Ferrer and supported by various professionals from the art and design worlds as well as the cultural and communication department of the local government. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

President Salvo Peter Lim of Meriton

NUNO, MERITON AND THE RETURN OF THE BEAST October was a fantastic month in many ways for everyone concerned with Valencia football club. It started in the best possible way when Nuno Espírito Santo received news that he had won the Liga BBVA Manager of the month award for September just prior to the Atlético Madrid game. Going into the clash with last year’s champions, Valencia remained unbeaten in the league after six matches. The local fans could not have wished for a better start, as Valencia were three goals to the good inside of 15 minutes, thanks to a Miranda own goal, a left foot shot from André Gomes and a powerful Otamendi header from a corner. Mario Mandžukić reduced the deficit for the visitors and their revival looked to be gaining further momentum when the referee awarded a harsh-looking penalty to the rojiblancos on the stroke of half -time. Diego Alves has justifiably gained the reputation as one of the best penalty stoppers in the game and once again he came to Los Chés’ rescue in the pivotal moment of the game, saving Siqueira’s weakly struck effort.

The second half ebbed and flowed with Atléti looking increasingly more threatening as the game progressed, but their day was compounded when substitute Alessio Cerci thought he had scored in stoppage time, only to find the goal disallowed for a handball. A second yellow card followed for the winger and he was subsequently sent to the stands, pleading his innocence. The international fixtures followed next and Valencia received further good news with the call-up of Rodrigo Moreno to the Spanish national team. The Brazilian-born midfielder moved to Galicia in his teens and has represented Spain in the past at youth level. He was also part of the Olympic squad that participated in the 2012 games in London. Rodrigo, who once played for Bolton, got a taste of international football by coming on for Diego Costa in the 84th minute of the game against Luxembourg and promptly set up a fourth goal for former Valencia favourite Juan Bernat. Paco Alcácer also scored in the game to strengthen his claim to become a regular fixture in the national side’s starting lineup.

foot of the table, but a comprehensive performance by the Galicians put pay to Los Chés’ unbeaten run and inflicted the first league defeat of the season on Valencia. No one could argue with the 3-0 deficit, as the home side outplayed Valencia. The result had further connotations as the weekend progressed, taking Depor out of the bottom three and leaving Valencia ominously with ground to catch up on Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table. Valencia Region rivals Elche were the next visitors to Mestalla but, prior to their weekend visit, fans finally received the news they had been waiting over a year for… that Singapore businessman Peter Lim and his investment company, Meriton Holdings, had finally bought a 70% stake in the club. Bankia, the club’s main creditor, agreed to sell the shares and Meriton signed the sales and purchasing agreement with Fundación Valencia CF the day before the Elche game.

After the league hiatus due to the international European qualifiers, Valencia had to travel to Estadio Riazor and a match up with Deportivo La Coruña.

Lim, the son of a fishmonger, has a net worth of $2.5 billion US dollars and was associated with bids to buy Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Glasgow Rangers and AC Milan in the past. The Singapore businessman also intimated that work will re-start on the new Mestalla with a tentative date of 2019 suggested for its completion.

Coming into the game the newly promoted the club were struggling at the

He got a warm welcome from all parts of the ground before the Elche game and

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 the players did their part to cap off an excellent weekend by delivering an adept performance to secure three precious league points. All three of Valencia’s goals came from corners taken by Pablo Piatti. The little Argentine has been a revelation this season and his pinpoint out-swinging cross met the head of Mustafi to give the home side the lead early on. Valencia doubled their lead when Dani Parejo reacted first to Piatti’s in-swinging corner and his front post header went unchallenged into the back of the net. The home side continued to boss the match and their third goal was not unexpected, when a flick on from Piatti’s corner by Otamendi ricocheted off exValencia player David Lombán to give his goalkeeper no chance. A late riposte by Elche to make the final score 3-1 did nothing to dampen the fans’ enthusiasm. Arguably, the biggest cheer of the day was for the return to football of the Beast of Vallecas, the nickname of Álvaro Negredo. The sobriquet is in honour of the working-class district of Madrid where he was born and the Valencia fans have been waiting for the Beast to recover from the broken foot he received in a pre-season friendly whilst playing for Manchester City against the Scottish side Heart of Midlothian.

Negredo received a rapturous ovation from the fans when he came on in the 83rd minute for Rodrigo Moreno. The Beast nearly marked his debut with a goal within four minutes of his entry when an exquisite chip over the keeper was just a few inches high, nestling on the top of the net rather than in the roof of it. Valencia’s next opponents were local rivals Villarreal. The short trip to the Madrigal has not been a happy one in recent years for the blanquinegres but this year proved different as Los Chés ran out 3-1 winners thanks to an own goal and a brace from Shkodran Mustafi. In the northeast of the city, things continue to look grim for Levante UD. An exciting draw in Eibar was their only point in September and heavy defeats at home to Real Madrid and away to Celta Vigo have done little to help confidence.

CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA a bit ahead in Ibiza and every place has a special sound and way of doing their thing. It inspires me in my productions a lot, but my DJ sets and showcase is mainly to bring the Ibiza island sounds to wherever you are – Mars, the moon …we are coming to you! Interview by Owl JP Chronic Label Owner / Producer http://www.facebook.com/jpchronicmusic Skype: jpchronic

JP Chronic Tell us something about where you were born and your upbringing. I was born on the island of Mauritius, situated in the Indian Ocean, where I was raised and where I also started my career as a DJ. I am very lucky to have amazing parents who were very open – minded and live in a house where music was playing all the time. My dad has a huge collection of vinyl, including jazz, blues, rock, reggae and more styles. So, from a very young age, my favourite game was listening to each and every single record. When I was around 14 years old, I started to play at birthday parties, weddings and other occasions when the family were getting together, that was nearly every weekend. We are a numerous family, that led me to do parties with my friends when I got to college and afterwards, to find my way straight to the clubs when I was 18… How did you find living and working in Valencia? It was a great experience personally and professionally, ‘cos Valencia has a huge background of clubbing and a great underground culture. It’s a very cosmopolitan city where you could go out every day of the week and also has some amazing cuisine; you can already guess my all – time favourite is ‘La Paella Valenciana’… he-he-he! Back in the day, DJs were still playing on vinyl and you could recognise the good ones. There

was much more respect for local and international talents, which led me to play in places like Barraca, Le Club, Latex, Fox Congo, Caballito del Mar, Mill Club, and L’Umbracle just to name a few. Valencia was one of the best experiences and times of my life as a vinyl DJ… Tell us about your life and projects in Ibiza. Since a very young age, I’ve always dreamed about living in Ibiza, as it is the capital of electronic music and clubbing. From the first time I laid foot on this island, I knew it was going to be my home and also that it wasn’t going to be that easy. I am very lucky to have met the right people on my path since I arrived. Although I’ve had some ups and downs, the island has made me become who I am today. My long – time love for the Balearic groove and great respect for its culture led me to start my own label, Chronovision Ibiza, where I can show the world what Ibiza really sounds like and push the amazing artists that have lived on this island for so long that, in a way, we can say they are part of the furniture now…jajaja! During these last seven years, I’ve played regularly in places like Pacha, Space, Privilege, Ushuaia, Sankeys, Booom, Sands, Kumharas and many more… Does travelling around the world as a DJ influence the music you play?

LA CABINA IN COLLABORATION WITH 24/ 7 VALENCIA

LA CABINA FILM FESTIVAL The seventh edition of Valencia’s very own film festival, La Cabina Festival Internacional de Mediometrajes, will take place from 6-16 November. This year’s special section will be shown at the Filmoteca in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Over the last seven years the festival has grown and grown in scope and popularity. It has now become a firm standout fixture on the city’s arts calendar and is the most important film festival of its kind in the world. We spoke to Carlos Madrid, who has been part of the festival from its original inception right up to its present day success. What is a mediometraje and do they need a festival in their own right? What can they offer to the viewer? A mediometraje (medium – length film) is a film from 30 to 60 minutes long. I think they need their own festival because the Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

worldwide production of this kind of film is huge and their quality makes them deserve to be seen by the public.

to tell the next story, the precise time the film must last is 40 minutes. No more, no less.

They offer longer stories than short films, perhaps more complete and with more developed characters. The distribution circuit of this kind of films is very limited any way (our festival and maybe a European TV channel), so we admire the decision that all the directors in our festival have taken. To make a film without knowing if it is going to be distributed is an act of an artist.

How did you get involved in the festival and the world of cinema in general? Tell us about your passion for cinema and mediometrajes.

As is sometimes the case with short films, are medium – length films a way into making bigger productions or does the genre have its own specialists? The genre has its own specialists. There are three directors who have been selected two times with two different medium – length films (Spike Jonze is one of them). Maybe for some directors it is a transition to feature films but, as a director said to us in the second edition, every film needs the time it needs to be told. So no matter what a director has done before, if he/she needs 40 minutes

I was part of a group organising themed seasons of films every month. I have loved cinema since my childhood, and I was a spectator at Cinema Jove and the Mostra de Valencia (before its disappearance) ever since I can remember. One day, a friend of mine gave me a 28-minute short film in order to distribute it at Valencia festivals. I thought that if it had lasted 35 or 40 minutes, it could not be screened at any festival. I searched for medium – length film festivals and I could not find a single one. The next step was to ask the question: are we able to create one? This year the festival has moved venues. What is the thinking behind that? We are keeping the La Nau venue as

the place for the ‘La Cabina Inedits’ section. We have changed the Official Section venue to La Filmoteca because it is the natural place for a festival of this kind. It is like a ‘cinephile temple’and is situated right in the town centre (Plaza del Ayuntamiento), which makes it more accessible to spectators. Tell us a bit about this year’s line-up. Which films would you particularly recommend? I see there is a great mix of nationalities involved. Was it important to you to include films from places like Iran and Estonia (whose cinema industries we in Spain know little about)? We only care about the quality of the films and not about their nationalities. It is our first rule when we are selecting them. Sometimes we screen six films from a given country, and the next year we do not screen any at all from there. We never select a movie because of its country of origin; that would be discrimination against other films that deserve to be selected. I would recommend ‘I Love You, Deception’ and ‘The Burning Land’ by

‛The Burning Land’ by Julien Meynet

‛Sunny’ by Barbara Ott

French directors Héloïse Haddad and Julien Meynet or ‘Sunny’ by the German director Barbara Ott. But there are 24 films in the Official Section, selected from 240. So I recommend having a look at our program in English, Spanish French or Catalan (www.lacabina.es) and choose the film that attracts you the most. We have many genres: drama, comedy, musical, historical, surrealistic... No films from the USA or UK, is there any reason for this? There is no reason. We have had English and American films in other years, and we will have them again if they deserve to be in the Official Section but, as I said in the previous question, nationality is never a reason to select or not select a film. This is the seventh edition, have you been involved from the start? How has the festival developed over the years? I was there from the first edition. There were eight people on the staff at the beginning; today there are 25 of us. We had a five-day festival and nowadays

it lasts 10 days. We had less than 500 spectators in our first edition and 3,000 at the last one. Little by little, we have grown up, and we are very pleased to see this evolution and knowing that the La Cabina is nowadays a reference festival in Valencia. What would you say to our readers to encourage them to go to the festival? At La Cabina we have good quality international films that cannot be seen in another way (not even downloading them). Besides, it is a great opportunity to see films that can develop a story or some characters beyond more than a short film. Ten directors from Poland, France, Norway, Israel and Spain are also coming to the festival to present their films. Therefore, everybody will be able to ask questions to our guest directors about their films at the festival. I would also say that no matter the genre you like, you will find a good film at La Cabina. More info at www.lacabina.es Interview by David Rhead and José Marín
