At Mediterranea Hamburguesas sl, quality is our trademark and what sets us apart. We choose to work with the best materials, with a freshness and distinctive quality too. We enhance each burger with touches of the Mediterranean. Our daily challenge is to be the best burger bar in Valencia. Our meat comes from Valles de Esla in the province of Leon. The mostly mountain-bred animals are raised in semi-liberty, protecting the cattle and the environment. They feed on natural milk, vegetables & natural forages. Due to this healthy diet, their fats are heart-healthy. Our butchers get the best cuts and we take care to mince the meat daily, to preserve all its quality in addition to its unique flavour. All our vegetables are selected daily from the market to ensure freshness. Our bread is made the traditional way, wood oven baked with 100% natural ingredients. You can choose from Mediterranean, American poppy seed, coca or gluten-free bread. Or potatoes are fresh and homemade daily, fried in 100% vegetable oil, which is eco-friendly and government approved. Delicious and healthy at the same time! Our burgers are cooked in the moment, so you can enjoy the fresh flavour. We are not a slow burger bar but we are not fast food either. We have a menu with 15 burgers as well as sandwiches, salads and starters. All with most original and tasty recipes that make our burger the best in the city. If you have coeliac disease, we have many gluten-free options for you. We are now based in the centre of Valencia and also in the heart of Ruzafa. Rafa

RAFA LAHUERTA YÚFERA Rafa Lahuerta Yúfera is a Valencian writer, blogger and former member and founder of the Valencia supporters’ group Gol Gran. His book “La Balada del Bar Torino” (in reference to the bar in C/ Barcelonina where Valencia CF was founded back in 1919) was published in November last year. It is more than just a book about football, it is a personal chronicle of life, family and growing up in this city of Valencia. David Rhead and Jose Marín spoke to him about his book and his feelings for the club. Curiously and fittingly, 24/7 Valencia writer José Marín’s grandfather was one of the founders of Valencia CF at the Bar Torino! So why Valencia CF? I didn’t have much choice. My father made me a member as soon as I was born and from when I was two years old I went with him to every game. He was the real fanatic. Between 1982 and 1986

I was Valencia’s junior season ticket holder number 1. Every day I could see the silhouette of Mestalla from the corner of my street and my whole childhood and adolescence was greatly influenced by this presence. Football was at the centre of our home and my father was a true disciple of the game. I’ve never known anyone like him. In some ways, I’ve written this book to perpetuate his memory and also to try to get some understanding of the pull of momentum, which gets built around us and moves us without necessarily being part of our true identity. I didn’t choose to be a Valencia fan. Valencia was chosen for me. It also must be said that out of respect and love for my father, I have maintained that link. A link which, I have to admit, is increasingly filtered through reasoning and emotional distance. I haven’t been interested in football, in itself, for a long time.

another book. That’s not my world. Reading is much more rewarding.

What made you become a writer?

No, I wouldn’t. There’s no disputing that football, or rather, Valencia CF has an important presence in the book. But it’s not a book about football. It is, if anything, a book which uses football as the thread in order to tell other stories. I use my long-established inherited passion for Valencia CF as a base to ask questions about my own life. And a man

I don’t consider myself to be a writer. At least, I wouldn’t say it was a lifelong ambition. My great passion is reading, that’s what I like doing, what I do and what I want to do. Unless I feel a real necessity or some really powerful story takes hold of me, I don’t think I will write

What led you to write the book? The motives were the usual ones: vanity and necessity. A necessity to give a voice to people who are no longer around, who are the real stars of the book for me (my parents, my uncles and aunts, my grandparents), and vanity, without doubt, for the personal pleasure of presenting my mother with a book written for her. It was something I had wanted to do for a long time. It was meeting the challenge that I had set myself. In that sense, it was enormously rewarding and for that very reason it gave me a feeling that is impossible to beat. Would you say your book was only for football fans or, even, maybe only Valencia fans?

Rafa’s Dad Rafa’s book presentation at La Edad de Oro

who asks questions of himself is like a mirror for any reader, whether you like football or not, whether you’re a fan of Valencia or not. What would you hope people might take away from reading this book? That’s a very personal thing. Each reader will read a book that is no longer mine. I wrote a book with very few people in mind, six or seven at most. Whatever the case, I would be delighted if the reader who doesn’t know me at all would be left with the desire to get to know the city of Valencia which, in some ways, is a different city from the one which appears in the book. Maybe this journey from the city on the page to the city they visit will bring out new stories…which I’d be the first to want to read. Deep down what I really enjoy reading about is Valencia and its people. Valencia is a city which is in great need of literature, largely because for too long it has been a city which has been silenced and compromised by certain self-interested influences which have either paralyzed it or reduced it to being a place which is well below its true potential. How would you describe the crowd at Mestalla? It’s a peculiar crowd because Valencia is peculiar. There are very few teams in Europe who are in the same situation as Valencia, which is a ‘big’ club with a great history and tradition that finds itself in a league where the two real giants of world football play. It’s a very complex part to play. In a country where everything is Madrid or Barcelona, Valencia tries

to gatecrash the party from time to time. They do so in an atmosphere of incomprehension from the outside, interlopers are not allowed, and all this in a country where the media focus of Madrid and Barcelona is all-powerful. Nobody outside Valencia really takes the club seriously, except as an example to others of the defects that manifest themselves sooner or later in any club. All of this is a microcosm of what the city is and what it represents from the point of view of its role within the state. That’s not being a victim. It’s just fact. Within this unhelpful framework, it often happens that our own desire to succeed can work against us. It’s the price we have to pay. But that’s all part of the character of Valencia CF. It is its strength and also a weakness. It is a club with a lot of expectations that are almost never fulfilled. That generates frustration in the short term but also a strong loyalty. That might be why it is a club which goes in cycles, which has its ups and downs, but never stays at the top for too long. This is Valencia’s neurosis. But you know, for us who have been Valencia fans since we were in the cradle, how people see us soon becomes irrelevant. It’s our team… and that’s that.

Mario Kempes

Rafa

why I don’t like to express opinions on the day-to-day of the club. Not because I want to make myself seem important or like some sort of oracle. It’s being consistent with myself. Right now there are a lot of people who are much more involved and have much more enthusiasm and commitment than me. So the logical thing would be for them to take centre stage and take part in the day-to-day stuff. In order to give an opinion, you have to be well informed and that’s not my case right now. I do, however, keep up my membership and my season ticket and that’s my commitment to the club and always will be, whatever happens. What do you think of Mestalla now? It looks great. It’s a shame they didn’t think about doing it up some years ago. If it were up to me, Valencia wouldn’t leave Mestalla. Valencia CF makes less sense without Mestalla. Thanks, Rafa. Thanks for your interest. Interview by David Rhead and José Marín

Do you still go to the stadium? I don’t go to every game anymore but I do go quite a lot. On many occasions lethargy wins, though. With time, you get a bit more set-in-your-ways and football doesn’t have the same immediate importance it used to have. At 40, the thrill is not the same as when you are 15 or 20. That’s the way life works. That’s

VALENCIA MUSIC

SIMON CAMPBELL Tell us something about your background, travels, musical experiences and influences. I picked up a guitar aged 16 and it all started from there. In the late 1970s, while still at University in Salford, I was working non-stop as a session guitar player and started my first real band, Whitefire. In the ‘90s, we had commercial success with another group, Little Brother, whose Europop sound saw us signed up for a major deal by Polydor Germany and we toured Europe extensively. Returning to my rock roots, I formed the Method with Mike Hehir from Sad Café and Mick Gilbourne, one time drummer with 10cc. Over a two-year period, the band toured throughout the UK and Europe. During this time, my interest in production led me to work with Rick Dowson and Millhause. The latter became the Disciples and I joined Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

them as a songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist. The Disciples released a minialbum favourably reviewed by Q, the British music magazine. I moved to the Isle of Man in 2008 and released my first solo album, ‘ThirtySix’, in 2011, which had some great reviews and sold well! I was also nominated for a prestigious British Blues Award the same year it was released. I moved to Valencia with my partner and musical collaborator, Suzy Starlite, in 2013 to complete work on my next album, ‘The Knife’, which was released in October 2014. In May 2014, I married my amazing Starlite and together we have set up a vintage residential recording studio in Estivella, specialising in ‘70s sounds to accompany the existing Supertone Records label. Currently we are recording a joint ‘double head’ album to be released late 2015. Excited, yes we are! Just like Tedeschi Trucks, Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, now there is Starlite Campbell. :) How do you find living and working in Valencia compared to England?

Of course Valencia’s amazing skies, Mediterranean culture and cuisine has made a huge difference to our lives. We have played with some great musicians and continue to be inspired by the many people who are appreciative of our original music and not afraid to show it. The UK will always be in our souls, but we go where the music takes us. Writing, recording and releasing music which hopefully connects with a global audience, recording other artists, both here and remotely, playing shows and touring – we make it work. Take us through the tracks on your new album, ‘The Knife’. The album is a blend of Americana, blues and contemporary folk, exploring acoustic instrumentation and my love of the electric guitar, mellotron and Hammond organ. It features songs about real people and places reflecting my increasing love of acoustic music from both sides of the Atlantic. I was very excited to release the album not only on download and CD, but also 180 gram vinyl, by far the best medium on which to appreciate the record. You feel totally connected to the songs.

SIMON CAMPBELL

Broken Man The words were written by my longtime collaborator Tim Wright when in a particularly dark moment. It’s a big production, which hopefully adds gravitas to the very personal lyrics. Dreamer I wrote this when living in France about a great friend I was reunited with after many, many years. He lives in San Sebastian and was the person who suggested we move to Valencia! The Knife I met a guy in a bar in Manchester years ago, the sort of bloke you always remember – he was ‘different’. Years later, I saw his picture in the newspaper. He had killed a man. The story was he had picked up a woman in a gay bar and went back to her place. When they started to become intimate, he realised the ‘girl’ was a ‘guy’ and murdered him with a hammer and chisel. Nice... Affairs of the Heart Hmmm. It’s about both my ex and wonderful new wife.

Do You Want Me In 2012 I was producing a band at the Chairworks Studio in Castleford, north of England. I have never seen as many people as sad as in that town. This is a folk song written and performed by Starlite and myself about desperation and hopelessness. Sorry I Broke Your Heart I wrote this for my first real girlfriend. “I was so young and foolish”. The Man Go to any bar or restaurant in the world and observe men alone drinking and doing ‘stuff’; this is all about them. The last verse is about the couple at dinner who never speak all night. “He eats his steak / He tips the waiter / Ignores his wife / Like a burnt potato…” Any plans for 2015 and any gigs in Valencia? We will be playing extensively throughout the city in early / mid-2015 preparing for our European tour. You can sign up for e-mail updates and special offers on my website or come say hello on Facebook: Our music is your music.

FOOD

HEART WARMING OVEN ROASTED LAMB AND ASPARAGUS By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Having previously lived on an idyllic Cornish farm complete with delightful spring fluffy lambs hopping around the fields, I’m afraid to confess to the vegetarians amongst you that, although I am not a huge meat-eater, lamb is one of my favourite meats. As one of the benefits of writing this column is that I sometimes actually get to cook food for myself instead of for others, I’m therefore quite happy to have worked lamb into the menu tonight. So this recipe comes literally hot off the plate! With Valentine’s night on the horizon, it makes it a perfect choice for, according to Chinese medicine and perhaps owing to it being a high source of zinc, lamb is a winter warmer to aid the libido and the kidneys. Here we combine the lamb with freshly sprouted baby carrots, red onion, asparagus spears and freshly made couscous garnished with pomegranate adding to our heady Valentine mix. So to unleash the Cupids, first remember to marinate the lamb for at least 6 hours or overnight in a ziplocked bag or bowl covered with cling film in a cool place. Preparation Heat oven to 240C An hour before you wish to serve your meal, lower the heat of the oven to 220C and prepare the vegetables while it is heating. Place the red onion and chopped carrots with a little olive oil, salt and pepper in a roasting tray. Roast for about 30 minutes, shaking the pan every now and again and checking that the onion is not burning. Add the asparagus spears. Roast for another 5 minutes before Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Oven Roasted Lamb and Asparagus Ingredients (Serves 2): • 4 lamb chops or fillets (garreta) • Marinade (marinate the lamb for at least 6 hours or preferably overnight) • 1 glass white dry wine • 1 dessert spoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 teaspoon oregano • Couple of sprigs fresh rosemary • Sea salt and pepper to season For the roasting dish • Scant quantity of olive oil for roasting dish • 1 red onion, sliced • 8 small baby carrots, peeled and chopped • 8 asparagus (cut off the tough bottom ends) • 1 lemon, in quarters • 250 gm couscous • Boiled water to cover (by about an inch) • 1/2 lemon, squeezed • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 chillis (guindillas), finely chopped • Salt • Add when ready • 1 pomegranate, seeded • Fresh herbs

adding the lamb and all the juice from the marinade. While the lamb is cooking (about another 10 minutes) prepare the couscous. Boil an ample quantity of water and pour over the couscous so there is about just over 1/2 inch of liquid above the couscous. Leave to absorb. Fluff from time to time with a fork. When all the liquid has been absorbed, add the juice of half a lemon, tablespoon of olive oil and the chopped guindillas (capsicum) of chilli. When it has cooled slightly, add the pomegranate and a few fresh herbs of mint and rosemary. Place the couscous on a plate with the freshly roasted vegetables and lamb on top and garnish with herbs. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

COCO PAZZO This month’s recommended restaurant is in the heart of Cánovas, in what D and I affectionately like to think of as Valencia’s restaurant land. C/ Conde Altea is a long street that runs parallel to the Gran Vía Marqués del Turia. It is lined with restaurants of all descriptions. The river end is particularly busy as there are pubs and bars, and on a Friday or Saturday night the atmosphere buzzes. Our destination this night was ‘Coco Pazzo’, an Argentinian asador/ mediterranean restaurant at the busy end of the street. As you walk in the restaurant you notice to your left the brasa, the griddle on which they cook the various meats on offer on their small but interesting menu. The meat here is cooked over charcoal (carbón). We were shown to our table by Paolo, the Valencian-born chef and coowner of the restaurant – his Venezuelan wife Daniela is the other partner in this enterprise. Paolo is open and friendly and most welcoming, a perfect host. He chats pleasantly as we get ourselves seated and takes our order for wine – “A bottle, of course! And some water?” he says – and returns almost immediately with a 2011 Rioja, Marqués de Ulía (14.50€), smooth and delicious. Paolo then recommends a Coco Pazzo César salad (7.00€), a twist on the classic version, as it is with warm pancetta instead of the usual chicken, and very good, too! Next came an Empanada Argentina casera (a homemade pastry filled with meat,

currants, peppers onions and cumin, 3€ each), quite different from its Spanish cousin and really rich and delicious. Then came the star of the show, the meat. A small griddle was brought to the table topped with a variety of cuts of meat and an Argentinian sausage (30 – 40€). The meat, all beef, consisted of ribs, entrecôte and a cut that was new to D and I, entraña – a 2 cm wide ribbon of meat with a crispy surface on both sides. It is the part of the diaphragm connected to the ribs and a great delicacy, Paolo informed us. It is the most forgiving cut of meat in that, no matter how long it stays over the coals, it still remains tender inside the crispy skin. All the meat was perfectly cooked, full of flavour and tender. It was served with grilled potatoes and an avocadobased salsa from Paulo’s wife’s native Venezuela called guasacaca. It is similar to guacamole but thinner and is a great accompaniment to meat. I, for one, will be making this salsa the next time I serve beef or burgers. In the interest of this article, we reluctantly (not) agreed to a postre, but a small one after all that meat. It came, but it wasn’t small at all, a nutella tart and a strawberry cheesecake. It was great, but we really struggled to eat it. At this point we had coffees and Paolo joined us to chat about the restaurant and his love of food. He has been in the business for years, joining his father’s restaurant first and learning his trade with him. Coco Pazzo is a relatively new venture of around 18 months with his wife. The well-priced menu includes

the aforementioned Argentinian beef but Galician beef is also on offer, as well as Angus Burger and duck. A good variety of starters (mussels, ceviche, empanadas) and salads, and a choice of fish complete the picture. The very reasonably-priced wine list comprises wines from the main regions of Spain, prices range from 14.50€ to a respectable 27.00€. The room is pleasantly decorated in muted greys and the soundtrack was, interestingly, mainly John Mayer. The night of our visit the curtains were drawn on the two private dining areas, great for groups for whom they have special menus. From February and throughout the warmer months, they will be offering a menú del día at 9.50€ and there is ample terrace seating in this busy end of Conde Altea. Quality food and great service at a good price. BACCO D.O.C. The 24/7 Valencia team has been enjoying tasty work lunches and romantic, candlelit dinners at Bacco Doc ever since the magazine began, way back in the year 2000! With welcoming Italian owners and chefs, Bacco Doc is as authentic an Italian restaurant as you will find in Valencia. What really sets it apart is its stunning, baroque, cave-like interior, replete with bejewelled and mirrored stalagmites and stalactites giving a certain subterranean-like otherworldliness to the vibe of the place that is truly unique. It was created by renowned decorator and designer Stefano Pennacchi. This rather special restaurant is easy to find as it is just a stone’s throw from the Mercado Central, in the heart of the centro histórico. Although spacious and set on three floors, there are some nice nooks and crannies that make it great for couples and small groups looking for some privacy. To accompany our meal, we enjoyed their house wine of Hoya de Cadenas, a fruity, Spanish red wine with a nice long finish from the Utiel-Requena area of the Valencia Region. As the soundtrack to our meal, we enjoyed an eclectic and unobtrusive mix of instrumental music ranging from bluesy to classical to Indian and jazzy fusion sounds. The flowing music went well with the vino and heady conversation! Conveniently, the menu is in Spanish, English, French and Italian, so it is easy to choose your favourite pasta or pizza here. Our young yet experienced black-clad waiters and waitress were friendly, polite and very informative regarding the cuisine. We had thought of plumping for their good value menú del día but the staff suggested that today we try some specialities of their ample carta. At our table we were dining with Luna, a fado singer who had just got back to Valencia from playing live concerts in her native Lisbon. As a starter, she chose Bresaola, which is originally a dish from the Lombardy region of Italy. It was a combination of dried salted beef with basil oil, rocket salad, black pepper, Grana Padano cheese and cherry tomatoes. She

found it to be “really good with the tomatoes being nice and fresh and the meat not too salty, which really opens the flavour of the dish.” We also chose a Carpaccio de pulpo, which was thinly-sliced octopus with citronette, cherry tomatoes, mint and marinated zucchini (courgette). It was absolutely the freshest octopus we have ever tasted and the artistic presentation of the dish was a delight. To accompany our starters, we felt it only right to try out their unique Ensalada Bacco, which was a mezclum salad with cherry tomatoes, dried fruit with a honey vinaigrette dressing. Luna remarked that the “salad was nice and light and tangy with the seeds giving it an earthy feeling.”

soft vanilla with luxurious almonds and a delicious dark chocolate topping. Luna went for an old favourite of hers: Sopa fría de frutas rojos, which was a combination of red fruits and vanilla and was praised for “having a really fruity flavour that was very natural and tasty.”

So, to the main courses. Amongst the 24/7 Valencia team was a writer whose Niçoise Mediterranean grandmother would make homemade ravioli the traditional way during his childhood holidays in the South of France. So, when the chance to try Ravioli dello chef came up, he couldn’t resist trying it out. The waiter tells us that this is a very popular dish here and much repeated by Italian customers, which is the best recommendation of all. We weren’t disappointed. The plato was presented with the symmetry of a graphic artist and the ravioli of braised beef contrasted smoothly and sweetly with the Grana Padano cream and red wine reduction sauce. It was not overly filling, which made it a more pleasant dish to enjoy at leisure. The waiter reminded us that all Bacco Doc pasta is made freshly in the kitchen and is not from the supermarket, the kind of authentic touch that makes all the difference to your dining experience. Luna chose Fettuccine zucchine e gamberi, which was another visual work of art presented on a plate! With the fettuccine pasta combining with prawns, zucchini and tomato, it looked as good as it tasted and Luna added: “The pasta melts in the mouth in the right way, not the typical way, and there is a real seafood freshness that combines well with the courgette.”

LA FÁBRICA Great! Just a stone’s throw from La Lonja and Mercado Central, you will find ‘La Fábrica Tyris’, which is the taproom of local brewers Tyris. All their cervezas are craft beers so you won’t find any commercial brands here, just lovingly brewed beer. Enjoy an ample terraza and a hip yet relaxed interior of wooden tables & chairs and colourful posters lining the walls. The organic vibe goes well with the philosophy of the place. On the wall, there is an attractively designed graphic explanation of the steps taken to brew beer. A blackboard above the bar informs customers of the craft beers they can savour. These include their original ‘Tyris’, a malty ‘Paqui Brown’, a strong ‘Vipa’ for beer connoisseurs, a toasted ‘Riu Rau’, the American pale ale ‘Au Yeah!’, the stout beer delight of ‘Smoky Porter’ and an edgy ‘Lemonzilla’. There is an industrial-style bar for pumping out the beers with the interesting detail of barometers visible to the public. Most importantly, there is a very long wood

bar top to sip your beer on!!! With a cosmopolitan crowd of customers you will find Spanish, British, Italian, American and Irish beer lovers and more in this increasingly popular bar. Enjoy a large screen for live sports. It’s also a hangout for ‘after work’ evenings as well as intercambio language nights. They don’t want anyone to go hungry, so you will find a good selection of tapas (including ham, nachos with guacamole, their very own ‘patatyris bravas’ and fish dishes). There are vegetarian and tuna salads, too. Bocatas include ham, cheese, sausage and anchovy choices. Don’t forget to also try their quality beef hamburguesas with your pint! For dessert, you can finish off with a refreshing ice cream or tasty bit of cake as postre. ‘La Fábrica’ is quite new and already a really buzzing spot and meeting point in the centro histórico. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

2015 - A YEAR FULL OF PROMISE As the league enters its second phase with the return fixtures now starting to take place, Valencia CF can look back on the first half of their campaign with a certain amount of satisfaction. Los Chés managed to go through the month of December unbeaten and Valencia CF was deemed successful enough to win coach Nuno Santos the La Liga BBVA manager of the month award. It started with two away games. First there was a 2-1 victory in the Copa del Rey against Rayo Vallecano. Paco Alcácer and Rodrigo de Paul scored two second half goals after Moreno had put the team from the Madrid suburbs ahead just before half-time. Next came a well-earned draw with Granada. Negredo looked to have secured all three points for the blanquinegres when he put the visitors in front with only seven minutes on the clock remaining. However, a last gasp equaliser from the aptly named Success gave the Andalusians a share of the spoils. The computer fixture list has a funny way of creating unusual sequences and it did so again by pairing Rayo Vallecano to play Valencia at Mestalla in the league just three days before they were due to visit for the second leg of the Copa del Rey. The league encounter was a one-sided affair

with Valencia three goals to the good inside the first 36 minutes. A brace from Feghouli and a welcome goal for Pablo Piatti ensured the hosts enjoyed the second half without any real concerns.

in the 2004-2005 season to fine tune his skills. The match up with the minnows was scrappy and physical but the visitors matched fire with fire and ended up winning the match courtesy of a Paco Alcácer strike.

If only the second leg of the Copa del Rey could have been the same. That was a different animal completely. One goal to the good inside 10 minutes thanks to Alcácer and everything was ‘tickety-boo’. Then the wheels fell off the Valencia train as the defensive frailties of old once again began to raise their ugly heads.

The New Year started in the best possible fashion with a sold out Mestalla witnessing a deserved victory over Real Madrid. Ronaldo put the visitors in front from the penalty spot but Antonio Barragán’s deflected shot levelled things early in the second half. The stadium then erupted when Otamendi rose above Sergio Ramos from a Dani Parejo corner to place a bullet header past Casillas right in front of the Curva Nord faithful. The final 25 minutes were nail-biting, with the home side having a mixture of chances and frights, but when the referee finally blew the full-time whistle, celebrations started inside and outside the stadium.

A shell-shocked Mestalla watched Rayo score three goals in the space of 18 minutes and head into the interval with the away goals advantage. Nuno made a treble substitution, much to the delight of the fans, and within a minute of the restart, two of them, Piatti and Negredo, had combined to reduce the deficit, albeit with a little help from the Rayo defender Morcillo. Still down on aggregate by the odd goal, Valencia’s hopes looked to be completely dashed when Rayo scored a fourth on the hour mark. Local boy Alcácer once again provided a lifeline and then a late Valencia surge saw Rodrigo Moreno level the game and put Valencia into the next round. An amazing game that will long live in the memory of the Valencia faithful. A trip to Eibar followed. Everyone’s sentimental favourite and relishing the La Liga limelight, the promoted Basque side were only allowed to play in the premier division this year after last minute interventions and a public share scheme that brought in much-needed funds. Valencia’s only real connection with Eibar in the past was that David Silva was loaned to them

Three days later Espanyol visited for the first leg of the Copa del Rey and Valencia ended up victorious by the odd goal in three, thanks to goals from Gaya and Negredo. A trip to Galicia was next on the agenda and the team returned back home with a precious point. Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring just prior to the break but Celta Vigo equalised on the hour mark in a game with few clear-cut chances and very little quality. The second leg of the Copa del Rey came next and two late goals from former Levante favourite Felipe Caicedo ended the club’s Cup campaign for the season. This elimination from was the only real downside in the last two months. However, the Cup could have proved an unhealthy sidetrack the deeper Valencia progressed and, as a result

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 of the defeat in Barcelona, the players now have no option but to totally focus on securing a Champions League spot in order for the season to be recognised as a memorable one. Mestalla was again close to capacity when Los Chés entertained Almería in La Liga. The game was littered with defensive errors but Valencia just shaded it by three goals to two. The home side were twice in front through Rodrigo Moreno and Parejo, but on both occasions were pegged back by goals from the impressive Israeli international Tomer Hemed. Valencia had Negredo to thank for all three points, as he came off the bench and scored with a trademark header against his old club after great work by the ever-improving Gaya. Arguably the most satisfying and important victory of the season so far was the 3-1 demolition of Sevilla. There has been bad blood between the clubs and fans in recent years and the former Valencia duo Unai Emery and Éver Banega both received hostile receptions on their return to Mestalla. The match itself was as intense as the atmosphere in the stadium, but somewhat marred as a spectacle by a fussy referee, who gave three penalties when most officials would not have given one. Parejo converted the first for Valencia and then added to his personal tally after a beautiful sweeping move that may well turn out to be the best goal the team score all season. A Carlos Bacca penalty reduced the deficit but he could not repeat the feat later in the first half when given the opportunity. Diego Alves is renowned for being one of the best penalty savers in the world and, second time around, the Brazilian saved with his legs to keep Valencia in front at the halfway stage. Valencia gave themselves breathing space early in the second half when

Javi Fuego extended the home side’s lead but Sevilla then squandered several good opportunities as the second half progressed. In the end Los Chés ran out comfortable winners and secured a superior head to head, which could prove crucial towards the final standings at the end of the season. Another side from the Southern province, Málaga, were the blanquinegres’ next opponents. Valencia have not won at La Rosaleda since 2010 and this year was no different as the home side bagged a 1-0 victory. Despite this setback Valencia continue to offer lots of positives. Testimony to how far the club has blossomed under Nuno Santos was reflected on their apparent lack of activity in the January transfer window. Carlos Gil has moved to Aston Villa and Bruno Zuculini has returned to Manchester City but there were no new arrivals at Mestalla. Instead the board have concentrated their efforts ‘in-house’ and sensibly offered a new contract to Paco Alcácer that ties the Spanish international to his hometown team until 2020. Compare this to last season, when there were a plethora of comings and goings in January, and you can understand why the Valencia faithful are starting to get excited again about their team’s potential. Across the city at Levante, things are not so good. Their form has been miserable with no victories in the league for their fans to shout about in the last two months. Bryan Ruiz, Kalu Uche and Ivan Ramis have all been brought in from Fulham, Wigan and Colorado Rapids, respectively, but with away fixtures against Barcelona and Real Madrid on the imminent horizon, it seems that Levante will be in the

thick of the relegation battle right up until the last day of the season. John Howden Anyone wishing to watch Valencia or Levante can obtain tickets from the box offices at both ground, or visit their websites at: www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com

CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA thing that does stay the same, however, is the quirkiness of the bar, the good service, and the altogether positive vibe of the place. If you like flamenco, you can go on any Tuesday from 22:30h. It’s 10€ to get in and that includes a drink. Saturdays are funky nights to go, check out the Kojaks live on the 21st and if you want to jam to some reggae, I recommend you go on Wednesdays from 22.00h onwards.

Good morning Vie…I mean Valencia! I hope everyone has finally digested that Christmas roast and recovered from their New Year’s hangovers because a new month is upon us, and it’s time to party! Back again to being the piper, here is a little list of places to visit during those long nights out in Valencia. February is always an exciting month. St. Valentine’s is around the corner to remind most of us that we are single, it’s the last month of winter, Superbowl is on for those who enjoy watching ads and this particular month has a Friday the 13th…scary! Most importantly though, the Six Nations rugby tournament will begin on 6 February and go until March, and it’s always a great excuse to start drinking earlier than usual. You can watch the games with other expats & locals in the Irish pubs dotted around town. Personally I’ll be at St. Patrick’s (Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 69) in the Cánovas zone. Now for the clubs and, in no particular order of preference, let me get started. I haven’t been going to the Carmen much recently, as most clubs have set up or relocated to Ruzafa, but there is one bar that I do enjoy going to. Found quite close to the Mercado Central is the versatile and bohemian Radio City (C/ de Santa Teresa, 19), offering nights of house music, electro, world music, live flamenco, even film nights, dance classes, exhibitions, reggae, open mic nights, etc. You can go any day of the week, and each night is different. One Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

As I just mentioned, Ruzafa is the upand-coming place to be. It’s always a cool area of Valencia if you are looking for anything ranging from hip restaurants to cocktail bars and great nightclubs. You can visit the consistently good club Piccadilly (C/ dels Tomasos, 12) with techno, rock; pop, indie and more. DJ Boccachico will be there on 7 February. You might recognize his name as he has been playing most of the clubs in Valencia recently. Another DJ attending that night is Vlad Mazurenko. He has a minimalistic electro style, always appropriate for a good night of dancing. You can check his music out on his SoundCloud channel. In the upmarket Caánovas zone, you will find Le Premier (C/ Eduardo Bosca, 27), a fun club with electropop music and a young & vibrant crowd. There are two interesting nights to choose from this month. On Friday the 13th, they’re hosting the Bachelor Party, which I thought was a fun idea, seeing as you’d probably expect it to be horror- based, but instead focuses on those of us who are single. The second one is the following day, St. Valentine’s. Personally, I’ll be going to the former. You should stay on that side and go towards Av. Blasco Ibáñez. If I were you, I would START the party by visiting the Espit Chupitos (Valencia Cedro 12) in Plaza del Cedro, 12. It specializes in shots and has a very long menu of different kinds with funny names. Once you’ve had a few 2€ shots, you can make your way to Caribbean’s (C/ Bélgica, 5), open from Wednesday to Saturday. The music ranges from electropop to pop and reggaeton, and it attracts people between the ages of 18 to late 20s. I went there not too long ago, and I must say it was a nice pit stop before going to the

next bar, BCool (C/ Polo y Peyrolón, 11) which is about a two minute walk away. This is more for people in their 30s & 40s, and the music is more old school electro house. It is always quite busy, but not to the point of having to queue for ages outside in the cold. It’s a nice little club for a fun night. If you are in the neighbourhood and still don’t want to go home, you could crawl over to Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111). It’s usually open until 07.00h and is always a popular place with good electro music, pretty staff and good drinks. La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2) is close to the port and is home to a buzzing atmosphere. The great thing about this place is that it has three rooms with different styles and stays open until past the dawn! It has a great little group of resident DJs, with styles ranging from hip-hop and future garage to electro, house and more. Nights to add to your agenda would be Friday the 13th, when Mr.West will be DJing his electro-funk St. Tropez style. Redmoon will also be there and you can also check these guys out on the web. On 28 February, La3 will host the opening of Obscene Club. Catalán and Casañ, the two DJs from the Wise Men Project, will be there. They have been playing at La 3 for a while and their music is electro, inspired by early ‘90s and hip- hop, always followed by some great visuals in the background, making their nights that much more memorable. That’s all for now, folks. I hope you all find what you are looking for and don’t forget to “Make the most out of tonight and worry about it all tomorrow” :D Wills Matt PS: St Valentine’s Day is the chance for you guys in the doghouse to redeem yourselves. So buy some flowers, take her for a nice meal and then go out again and get messy!

VALENCIA WORLD and food from other nations. But they do believe in the stereotype that, compared to other nations, they are spontaneous, open and crazy party animals…

WAYNE FLINT Tell us something about your background, experiences and travels. I was born and dragged up in the English seaside town of Blackpool in the northwest. School was not so much about formal education but honing my skills in fighting, playing football and chasing girls (all of which I’m utterly dreadful at, by the way). As unemployment was high in the northwest, I left town to join the RAF for 6 years. I suppose 1994 was a real watershed for me. I was stationed in the north of Italy, where I fell in love with an Italian girl and, more importantly, the feeling of ‘being a foreigner’ and communicating in a language that isn’t my own. In the decade that followed, I was to leave the forces, go to university and live and teach in Italy, Finland, Japan, Bulgaria and Poland. I moved to Valencia in 2005. I now work as a teacher for the British Council and (occasionally) a mediocre actor on a freelance basis. How does living and teaching in Spain compare to other countries? One thing that really surprised me was how traditional the country is in general. Prior to coming here, I assumed that Spanish people were spontaneous, open and crazy party animals that made us Brits look dull and grey in comparison. Instead I have found myself living in a place where the entire country sits down to eat at the same time (14.00h and 22.00h, on the dot), people are judged on the way they dress (maybe this is why many Valencians spend their Sundays walking slowly down C/ Colón dressed like our royal family on a hunting trip) and people are relatively closed to music Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Saying this, I don’t want to bite the hand that feeds me and I evidently enjoy it because I’ve been here for 9 years! I really love the warmth, both of the climate and the people. I think Valencia is a breathtakingly beautiful place to live and I have the most wonderful friends here who are basically my family. Maybe these last nine years have not been the most stimulating years of my life but they have certainly been the happiest. I suppose a place with the warmth of Spain, the music and sense of humour of the UK, the food of Italy, the level of culture of Eastern Europe and Finnish girls would be my personal utopia. Tell us something about your social life and your band, ‘Please!’. I’m not going to tell you about my social life as I’d get myself into trouble. However, I’m happy to talk about ‘Please!’. There are four of us in the group: the super-creative Dave on rhythm guitar, the disgustingly talented Jesús on lead guitar, the outrageously versatile and consistent Ian on bass (who keeps us all in check) and me on vocals (and tambourine, woohoo!). I am basically a Bez from the Happy Mondays / karaoke singer hybrid who gets to perform with three very talented musicians. Our music is pretty eclectic as we all have our own tastes and each and every one of us brings something to the table. I’ve tried on countless occasions to turn them into my own personal backing group, but (rightly) they’re having none of it… Any plans and hopes for the future? Lamentably, at my age, I am forced to accept that the door has probably closed on my ambition to play professional cricket for England (I’ve been waiting for a call from the England and Wales Cricket Board for 28 years now). However, I’m more than happy to

continue working in the EFL sector. Ideally, I’d like to have a variety of activities in my life, including teaching, writing, examining, conferences etc. Work aside, I can see myself retiring in Valencia and I would love to learn to play the guitar. My electric guitar is probably my most prized possession … if only I could play the thing. What is your philosophy of life? I have seen many people watch opportunities pass them by and complain that life has dealt them a rough hand. I suppose my philosophy is to be pro-active and create your own luck. I was brought up in a poor area where unemployment was rife and my school meals and uniform were paid for by the state. I’ll never forget my roots (e.g. I remain an avid follower of Blackpool FC to this day); however, I needed to leave and carve my own chances in life. For this reason, I have been ‘lucky’ enough to live in many different countries, meet lots of wonderful people and do lots of cool things. VALENCIA BOOKS seen in the past will become less common. But to an extent it requires the whole society to put its hand up and say mea culpa. You studied Arabic at Oxford and you wrote ‘Andalus: Unlocking the Secrets of Moorish Spain’. What is the future for Islam in multi-cultural Europe?

JASON WEBSTER Could you tell us in detail about your latest detective book set in Valencia, ‘Blood Med’? It’s the fourth in the Chief Inspector Max Cámara series, and it takes a hard look at the economic crisis in Spain and the powerful effect it is having on society. Hospitals are understaffed and running out of money, while food banks have sprung up at various places in Valencia, most notably in a stretch of the unfinished Metro line near the centre. Max is involved in two cases, one involving the murder of an American blogger married to a Valencian man, and as it unravels, he exposes some of the high-level corruption that has done so much to bring the city to its knees. Why does Valencia have such a bad reputation for corruption? Simply because so much of the recent corruption in Spain has been in Valencia. Are Valencians more prone to corruption than other Spaniards? Possibly not, but low-level corruption is a part of everyday life, and I think all Spaniards have to recognise and accept this if they want the problem to get any better. The reason why so many corrupt politicians kept getting voted back into office was because a lot of people had a grudging respect for them. “I’d do the same if I was in their position,” they would say. There still are voters like that, but the good thing about the recent scandals is that finally Spaniards are waking up to the fact that when a politician steals public money, it isn’t cash from the sky, it’s money that pays for hospitals and schools, etc., so the politicians are actually robbing them. Hopefully that mindshift will mean the levels of theft that we’ve Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

My hope is that Islam and the West will have as long and fruitful relationship together as possible. The meetings of their respective cultures have brought enormous benefit for the whole of humankind over the course of history. Only in the past few decades has it become generally recognised in the West that we owe an enormous amount to the injection of ideas – intellectual, agricultural, artistic, architectural – from the Islamic world into Europe in the Middle Ages, principally through Spain, but also through Sicily and the Crusader states as well. So much – from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, the numbers we use, the games we play and even the rational thinking that we take so much for granted – would be unimaginable without that crossover. But extremists of all colours are starting to gain ground; the lunatics are in danger of taking over the asylum, and so I think it is more important than ever for sensible, moderate thinkers to fly their flags and state their case as strongly as possible. Not least because once a shift to the extremes gains a certain momentum, it can be difficult to stop. We need to calm ourselves, to laugh at ourselves more, and try to be more understanding. What is your view concerning freedom of expression and freedom of thought as a writer? Freedom of thought is fundamentally important, but the pressures to think in certain ways can be quite subtle. Just because one lives in a society where freedom of expression is allowed doesn’t mean that everyone has their own ideas. Quite the reverse, sometimes. Just listen to the clichés that come out of all of our mouths: working out what we really believe or think about something can take time and a certain kind of special effort. Which means it’s often easier to repeat what the

crowd around us is saying. Today we have turned freedom of expression into a kind of sacred cow, but is anyone asking how much freedom we really have? Drawing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad has a rather macho feel about it, and I’m not certain it actually achieves anything. Personally, I think the real threats to freedom of expression come from the ridicule or the silence with which societies deal with ideas that make them feel uncomfortable. That’s far more effective as a form of censorship than bullets or draconian laws. How are you and your Spanish family adapting to life in England after life in Valencia? We still maintain a property near Valencia and spend a lot of time in the area, so I don’t consider myself to have left the city, really. We’re spending a little more time in England these days, and that’s working fine. Could you tell us about any new books you have in the pipeline? This June sees the publication the fifth novel in the Max Cámara series, ‘The One and the Two’, which centres in large part on the Catalan situation – less the moves by Barcelona to break away from Spain, but more the attempts by certain centralist forces to prevent Catalonia from becoming independent. Action takes place in Valencia, of course, but also in Ceuta and Barcelona. It’s the biggest, most complicated (and explosive) case that Max has had to deal with, and at the same time he’s struggling with the impact the previous investigation had on his relationship with Alicia, and also questions about how his group of anarchist friends should respond to the continuing social and economic problems the country is facing. Meanwhile, I’ll be starting the sixth Max Cámara novel very shortly. In fact, I should be working on it right now. So I should probably stop here and get on with it… Interview by Owl
