Yes. Valencia deals in extremes. Drab in the winter and joyous in the spring. Fallas has to be one of the biggest and wildest parties in the world. In Valencia, they build you up...to burn you down. Being the Mediterranean, little is truly sacred (except tradition and change) and most excesses are permitted... within reason. Indeed, Valencia’s Fallas festival is surreal enough to have had the cautious authorities commission legendary artist & nutter Salvador Dalí to design the Fallas of the town square back in the day. Fitting! 24/7 Valencia is recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, The Guardian, Rough Guides, Let’s Go, Time Out, Footprints, Lonely Planet, CNN. com, Aer Lingus, Business Traveller Magazine, Footprints and many more. We are a cosmopolitan team of writers, photographers and designers who have chosen to make Valencia our permanent home.
You are in for a treat this month with an exclusive guide to Fallas, a Fallas interview and colourful Fallas photos. Check out our March listings for information on arts and theatre, restaurants, clubs, chill out, shopping and more. In Clubland, our expert clubber Wills Matt takes you around town for what’s hot on the nightlife scene and in ‘Valencia Music’ we interview psychedelic rockers ‘Daze of Dawn’.
See our March agenda at the back for clubbing and live music nights. Food lovers are in for a treat with a trip to welcoming Andalusian restaurant ‘Embrujo del Carmen’. We also enjoy night out of live flamenco and quality, international cuisine at ‘Mon’ just for you! Helen Westwater of La Ola Fresca , set in the hip & happening barrio of Benimaclet, has a ‛Chelsea bun’ type of recipe for all of our readers. Whether you are based in Valencia or just passing through, we wish you all a fantastic Fallas and we hope you enjoy spring to the max!
See you next month

FALLAS GUIDE 15 twentyfoursevenvalencia 7
Are you interested in folklore? Tradition? Big dresses? If you are, stick around. Valencia has all that and more during the celebration known as Las Fallas. Read this and consider yourself armed for the festivities.
LAS FALLAS During the second week of March, you’ll see these large sculptures being set up at practically every street corner. Anything can be represented in a falla; the Ten Commandments, the plight of the crippled, world peace or belly-button lint. These are then ceremoniously burnt (in La Cremà) by proud firemen on the night of March 19.
EL CASAL Think of a friendly neighbourhood association (again, at every street corner) whose main mission, apart from setting up its falla, is to wake you and all your neighbours up at 4.00 am. You’ll finally
get back to sleep only to be awakened again by its morning marching band (La Despertà). You can avoid this by joining a casal yourself, allowing you yourself to become the object of your neighbour’s hatred.
LA MASCLETÀ For hard-core Valencianos (nearly all of them). City Hall, not wanting to miss out on the fun, holds its own circus of noise every afternoon at 2.00 pm during Fallas. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is stocked with enough firecrackers to blow up a small country, which are then all lit. Loud explosions leading to a crescendo of painful sonic booms typify a good mascletà. Generally lasting five to ten minutes, the experience will leave you with gunpowder and sulphur in your lungs and bleeding ears, but hey, who cares? You’re only young once.
LAS FALLERAS Watch out! You could be knocked over by one if you’re not paying attention. More
than just a big dress, the fallera’s costume is the Ne Plus Ultra of traditional fashion wear. Covered by enough lace, brocade and satin to bury a man (or fallera), these brave women take part in all the city’s festivities. You’ll see them representing their casals by marching in parades, posing for pictures, making paellas on the street and having nervous breakdowns, smiling all the while. Acute observers will make the comparison between the fallera’s hairstyle and a certain science fiction film character, but the similarity ends there. These are Valencian Earth girls, born and bred.
THE NIGHTLIFE A misnomer, actually. The nightlife lasts all day and night for the first three weeks of March. Valencia doesn’t sleep, and if you think you will, you are mistaken. My advice is to do what bar, pub and restaurant employees do; take copious amounts of stimulants and stay awake. There’s no point in sleeping. No point! Lola García

WHAT IS FALLAS? This is what the city’s residents say; condensed for you by David Rhead and José Marín… The smell of cordite and the sizzle and crack of rockets. The smell of buñuelos frying in the middle of the night. The smell of the Plaza de la Virgen carpeted with spring flowers at four o’clock in the morning. The smell of ammonia in the morning when someone has used your doorstep as a bar toilet. Sunny mornings, windy afternoons and chilly nights. The mad rush to get to the mascletá. The whole city still buzzing at three in the morning. The down time between five in the afternoon and nine in the evening. Burnt-out bins and exploded milk cartons.
The jumpy feeling of walking round and knowing that at any moment someone is going to throw a banger at you. Nervously jumping out the way of a banger only to find it was a pathetic little “popper” thrown by a four-year-old. Nervously jumping out the way of a banger only to find that it was a cigarette end someone had thrown away. The constant Fallas soundtrack of snap, crackle and pop and distant marching bands. The Fallera Mayor waving and weeping. The Mascletá. The overcrowded ‘VIP’ balcony at the Ayuntamiento. Rita Barberá’s “caloret” and red dress. The rhythm of the masclets filling the square. The rush and rumble that booms in through your toes and blasts out through your fingertips. Walking for an hour and then waiting forty-five minutes in a hot, crowded square for five minutes of loud bangs. Screaming rockets on sunny blue skies. The ‘knowledgeable’ crowds and the roar of approval at the finale. The first
few bars of “El Fallero”. Sunglasses, mopeds and Nobel cigarettes. Beers and calamares amongst the bustle of a sunny post-mascletá. The bright colours, fun and weird bawdiness of the fallas. Angels and demons. Ducks coming out of teapots. Waiting with five hundred other people at the Torres de Serranos for the one taxi on duty in the whole city. Long walks home through crowded streets. Moors and Christians in C/ Conde Altea. The lights in Ruzafa. Who pays the electricity bill for the lights in Ruzafa? Paellas in the street. The enthusiasm and rush of activity at the beginning of a midnight paella competition. The smell of burning firewood and melting asphalt. Being too drunk and hungry to care what the paella taste likes by the time it’s finished. Unexpected energetic guests. Street stalls, pony-tailed musicians from the Andes. Buñuelos, churros, porras, waffles and chocolate fried in three-dayold fat.

Silly hats, glow in the dark bracelets and Tweetie Pie balloons. Human statues and jugglers in the narrowest of streets. The Fallera Mayor going up in a balloon. “Senyor pirotècnic, pot començar la mascletá”. Fourteen-yearold Valencians’ first taste of nightlife. Verbenas everywhere. Tardis toilets in the river. Beer in a paper cup. Agua de Valencia in a plastic cup. Dodgy vodka in a plastic cup leaning over one of those yellow crash barriers around the falla. Jerusalem, Merced, Mercat, Na Jordana, L’Antiga, Seneca, C/ Quart, Murillo. Porcelain pastels in Plaza Pilar. Arranging to meet five different people at the same time in different places and everyone arriving late, including you. Not meeting your friends but always bumping into your enemies. Traipsing back and forth across the river five times in one night. Falleros selling you flags, plants and oranges at the traffic lights. Falleros blocking off your street three weeks before Fallas has even started, keeping you awake all night and then knocking on your door asking for a contribution. Community spirit. Civic pride. Xocolatá and the Casal. Access only through a
friend of a friend. Flags on the balconies. Controlled chaos. German Schalke 04 football fans back again. The way the city magically evolves into something completely different for five days and then the day after it’s miraculously back to normal, like it never happened. The noon time rush for a pint of Guinness on St Patrick’s Day. Green beer from Infinito. The Castillo. You never tire of its spectacular colours and thunderous splendour. A couple of quiet beers in Bar Pana while everyone else is at the Castillo. The Fireworks. Those rockets that go down and then go back up again. The bronze palm trees and exploding hearts and stars. Paying twice the price for half the quality. Six euros for three patatas bravas. The pomp and celebration of the Ofrenda and the Mare de Deu. The falleros swanning around blocking up the streets in their finest, each trying to impress with the biggest and most ostentatious flower arrangements. The five-year-old Little Princess falleras, all flowers, regal smiles and mini legs. Fifty-year- old falleras all tear-strewn make-up, black lace and
cigarettes. Julio Tormo beaming out to Valencia 24 hours a day from the Plaza de la Virgen. “Estás plorant, xiqueta?” Marching bands all formal airs and traditional music during the Ofrenda; Dixieland jazz,“Tirate de la moto” on the way home. Greenhouse effect fumes streaming into the air from the fireworks. Five days of everyone walking or taking public transport in a car-free city centre. Dancing with your grandma at the verbena. Dancing with someone else’s grandma at the verbena. The red and black smoke that rises above the city on the night of San José. The firemen. Everyone getting soaked in the Plaza Dr Collado. Trying to see six different cremás and arriving late for each one. The crowd booing the national anthem in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The feeling that spring has finally come. Out with the old and in with the new. Tired legs and aching heads. A good square meal when it’s all over. And then, on the twentieth, L’apuntá to set the ball rolling again for next year. DAZE OF DAWN Who are Daze of Dawn and can you tell us something about your background and musical influences? Daze of Dawn are myself (Claude Robillard) on vocals and guitar, Carlos Sánchez on bass, and Miguel Angel Nueda on drums. We haven’t always been a rock power trio, as the group originally started out with five members back in 2001 when I first arrived in Spain after four years in Japan. Over time, members have come and gone (I’m the only “original” member left) and little by little the band has shrunk to just three of us. This is partly due to the pain-in-theass factor of teaching a new guitar player all the riffs and my own desire to be the only guitar player in the band. There’s a freedom there that I never knew existed. In 2011 we formed the power trio and everything seemed to boost up to the Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia
next level from that moment onward. We entered a few contests, won a very big one (Sona la Dipu, 2012), recorded a new album (‘Sofa King Cool’, Clamrecords, 2013) and have been getting more and more opportunities to play bigger and bigger rock festivals. This time we’re going all the way! Our influences are ‘70s and ‘90s rock bands, or groups in that style – Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Neil Young, Queens of the Stone Age, the Tragically Hip, and the Raconteurs are just a few bands that come to mind. How do you find living and working in Spain compared to growing up in Canada? There is no comparison. These are two different cultures and climates, but I’ve made it a habit in my life to try and live in places where palm trees grow. As a result, all my friends are back home shovelling snow while I’m planning my next vegetable garden. Suckers! Could you take us through some key
tracks of your new album, ‘Sofa King Cool’? Falling in Love When we first played this song together, there was a moment when we finished and all just looking at each other in stunned shock and smiling…like we had made some groundbreaking discovery and were the first to know about it, or had captured lightning in a bottle. The song is so simple and so raw, we just had to make it our first single. Sunshine This song is about being blinded by fame and by those who have achieved it on the highest level. What is that strange and elusive power of being ‘known’ by everyone and literally ‘held’ inside the heads of millions of people? Particle or Wave All these modern ‘Higgs boson’ people at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) think they are so cool

wheeled my wife away into the operating theatre for open heart surgery. That last moment and last contact before entering the unknown and the unthinkable. So there is a lot of intensity in this song. This is an experience people should only be forced to have when they are much older. Today she is 100% healthy and stronger than ever, in case you wonder how that all turned out. What are your plans for 2015? and hip with their fancy discoveries and scholarly papers. This is a homage to good old-fashioned light and the starlight in the sky that has twisted and curved through space and time to reach us from so many billions of light years ago and galaxies far away. Sofa King Cool This song title comes from a play on words. When spoken, “Sofa King Cool” sounds just like “So Fucking Cool”. While sitting on the sofa one day, we were laughing about this and I jokingly picked up the guitar and just started playing the strange guitar riff and making up the lyrics on the spot. It was the song pretty much as it is now. It was clearly ‘album title-worthy’, hence the name of the album. Later, a little bit of jamming with my good friend and fantastic singer Pablo Monteagudo (Uzzhuaïa) developed the hair-raising vocal harmonies you hear in the recording. The harmonica is the ‘cherry on top of the cake’, adding the finishing touch to the only song
on the album that is a purely acoustic performance. You Oughta Know One day I picked up my acoustic guitar and just started playing and singing the song like this. It was born that suddenly and it just seemed to fit. The next day I had an acoustic show and I stuck it into the set and it was a total hit. Since then it has been a standard in our usual electric show. Being Canadian, I have a special soft spot for all things from Canada (we recorded another classic Canadian hit on our last album, “New Orleans is Sinking” by the Tragically Hip), and so covering such a great artist as Alanis Morissette is a total pleasure…even if the lyrics are clearly meant for ‘a chick’ to sing them. “You Oughta Know” is definitely one of our favourite songs on the album. Take It Easy This song is particularly personal to me since it´s about the moment they
2015 is looking very good for us. We’ve got some shows planned for London, a tour in the Netherlands this spring, as well as a couple of major festivals (sorry, we can’t announce them just yet…but they are BIG) and even a new music video to work on. I’ve also got a bunch of new songs rattling around in my head so we’ll have to start playing those soon if I want to get any sleep at night. FOOD
LA OLA FRESCA ROCKS AND ROLLS By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Delve into the history of buns and it gives you a fair idea of the origin of the expression bunfight! It would seem the desperation of the public to get their hands on these sweet warm delights was such that, on Good Friday 1792, a huge throng of people gathered outside the famous Chelsea Bun House. This from being at a very early hour, “causing great disturbance and annoyance to the neighbours”, was followed by the outbreak of a riot when the mob found the hot cross bun had sold out! Chelsea buns, “fragrant as honey and sweeter in taste”, and the traditional Easter bun, hot cross buns, both sold like hot cakes! Therefore, in an attempt to get a similar ‘caloret’ going amongst the crowds, we are going to break with tradition and make a mix between the Chelsea Bun and Hot Cross Bun. Our very own ‘Fresh Wave Bun’, ‘La Ola Fresca Roll’!
La Ola Fresca Roll Ingredients (makes 9): Dough • 455 gm (1 lb) unbleached white bread flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 dessert spoon cinnamon • 40 gm (1 1/2 oz) sugar • 15 gm (1/2 oz) fresh yeast (or use 1 sachet easy blend dried active yeast (7 gm // 1/4 oz) and mix with the flour and start immediately to mix) • 170 ml (6 fl oz) milk, lukewarm • 1 egg (size 1), beaten • 60 gm (2 oz) butter, melted • Extra flour for dusting • Vegetable oil for greasing Filling • 70 gm (2 1/2 oz) panela or brown sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 apple, roughly chopped • 115 gm (4 oz) dried fruits (sultanas, raisins) • Melted butter Glaze • 2 tablespoons honey • 60 gm (2 oz) butter • 85 gm (3 oz) light Muscovado sugar • 4 tablespoons milk • 23 cm (8-9 inch) square cake tin about 4 cm (1 1/2 inch) deep, greased
Meanwhile, roughly chop the apple and cook with the panela, cinnamon, dried fruits and the remaining melted butter. Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia
Put all the ingredients for the glaze in a pan and heat until the honey and butter melt, stirring frequently. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 1 minute. Pour the glaze over the risen buns. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the buns are golden brown. Cool in the tin for about 10 minutes until the topping is firm but not set, then turn out on to a wire rack to cool completely. If the topping is left too long and welds on to the tin, put the tin back in the oven until the topping softens again. Pull the buns apart when they have cooled. So don’t start a bunfight, enjoy Fallas and get ready for Easter! La Ola Fresca C/ Músico Magenti, 11 Tel.: 610 026 305 www.laolafresca.com Zona Benimaclet

Mix the flour, salt and cinnamon and half the sugar together in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. If using fresh yeast, cream it to a smooth liquid with the remaining sugar and a little milk. When it has started to react or sponge, pour the lukewarm milk and the yeast into the well. Add half the 60 gm (2 oz) of melted butter to the batter with the beaten egg. Work into the flour to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until it is delightfully smooth. Return to the bowl, now washed and greased, cover and leave to rise at normal room temperature until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
EMBRUJO DEL CARMEN We are in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen this month, in La Seu close to the Basilica in the Plaza del Virgen at a Spanish tasca and tapas bar. With its rustic interior, posters and images of bullfights and flamenco dancers, and a large screen TV showing a live flamenco concert, you know you’re in Andalusian country. We were shown to our table by the smiling and affable José, the Cuban owner and maître d’ of Embrujo del Carmen, a restaurant tucked away in a little pedestrian street off the Plaza de Manises (and the palace of the President of La Generalitat) in the historic centre of Valencia. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night. As we arrived, José was putting a huge bouquet of flowers in a jug for a couple from Holland who were celebrating a birthday. Imagine our surprise as we watched the waitress taking half-full plates from a table near the door. Our initial reaction was not good but we could hear the conversation, and all was clear, the food was absolutely delicious, just far too much on the plate! Could we take a doggy bag home? Once she had cleared their plates and taken them to the kitchen to be packed up, she arrived at our table and talked about the menu. For our wine order, she recommended a bottle of 2011 Albufera from Utiel-Requena, smooth and very good value at 12€ a bottle. José came
by our table to deliver olives and pickles and to discuss our meal. He asked us what our appetites were like. After seeing the amount of food being doggy bagged, we said medium. He soon returned with a plate piled high with mixed deep fried fish, lightly battered and really perfectly cooked. There were three kinds of small fish and tasty calamares, a delicious mix. These were followed by a huge plate of mussels, the meat sweet and the sauce really quite spicy by Spanish standards. All this was accompanied by a large basket of fresh bread. Once we had finished our plates were whisked away and our main courses arrived, Baked dorada for D and P and for me – Rabo de toro estufada. The dorada (sea bream) was served whole on a large bed of grilled vegetables and fried potatoes, it looked as good as it tasted, once again perfectly cooked. My rabo (bull’s tail) was served in a small casserole topped with three ‘bandarillas’ of fried potatoes and pimientos de Padrón. Bandarillas are the ornamented barbed darts used in bullfighting while pimientos de Padrón are small peppers which are grown in an area of Galicia called Padrón. They are sautéed in olive oil and served with coarse ground sea salt, they are sweet but the odd one packs a punch, so beware! The rabo fell off the bone and was in a rich wine sauce. There was, as I suspected, more than I could eat, and D and P struggled to finish theirs, too, delicious as it was. We had a chance to chat with José as we took a break before the desserts and drank a digestif of mistela (a sweet
moscatel, very popular in Valencia). He has had the restaurant for two years and wants it to be like being with your family. José is as happy to serve you a drink and tapas as a full meal, and would love the tasca to be treated as a local. The service is friendly, the staff chat to you and are really concerned that not only is the food good but you are having a good time. All the staff speak very good English. On certain nights (check out his Facebook page) he has live music to add to the ambience of the place. It is not a huge dining room, but he is happy to cater for groups and there is an ample terrace on this pedestrian street. Prices are very reasonable and he offers both a daytime and night-time fixed menu that includes a drink, dessert and coffee. The lunch menu is 12.50€ and dinner is 14.50€ and 16.50€ from now and during Fallas. We shared a filling tarta de chocolate and fresh tarta de queso (cheesecake), which was a really pleasant way to end an evening of good food and excellent service, highly enjoyable. MON Mon means “people” in Valenciano and describes itself as international cuisine with Mediterranean products. This upmarket restaurant could not be more central as it is conveniently located just off the corner of Plaza del Ayuntamiento on the busy and popular C/ San Vicente Martír. The live flamenco show was a joy to watch and experience with a charismatic Andalusian singer / dancer from Granada and a gifted Spanish guitarist regaling the international clientele with some dazzling bulerías, tangos, fandangos, sevillanas and more. Expect flamenco en directo most nights but do confirm with the restaurant beforehand. So, to the food. Our pleasant, hipster black-clad Spanish waiter Ximo had previously lived in Canada and Britain. He was charming and informative and we let him choose what would be some of the most representative of Mon’s many dishes. We kicked off with ‘Bellota’, the best ham on the market with the stock fed on antioxidant-rich acorns, living healthily and happily in open fields. It was very finely cut and the quality was superb with a distinctive flavour that went well with our multi-grain bread and tomato salsa. To accompany our meal we were recommended ‘Coleccio 2013’, a Syrah red wine from the Valencia region. It was very smooth and did not get in the way of the cuisine at any point.
Our next dish, ‘Pulpo a la brasa’, was a lovingly presented work of art. It was a grilled octopus that combined succulently with the soft textures of seaweed, paprika purée and olive oil as well as the towering fried pastry that shot upwards from the salt-sprinkled trendy rectangular base. An urbane version of a seafaring dish. Headless prawns were next…but with a twist. ‘Brocheta de gambas en costra de Kataifi y salsa romescu’ is a distinctive combination with the gambas being wrapped in a wiry pastry of Arabic origin, which we then dipped in a Catalan romescu light sauce that combines tomato with garlic and crushed almonds. The sheer quality of the cooking and ingredients means that that the combination of food and drink never leaves you feeling heavy…there is a harmony and method to the cooking and art of dining at Mon. We then shared a ‘Tataki de atún rojo’, which was a Japanese-style dish of thickly cut and distinctive tuna seared quickly over a hot flame with a taste that was memorable for having lots of character and decorated with cherry tomatoes. The exquisite little asparagus to accompany were semi-cooked to perfection. This way of cooking was invented by a 19th century rebel samurai! Heady from the red wine and Spanish guitarra, palmas y baile, we savoured a sexy ‘Parfait de avellanas’, which proved to be a tasty dessert that combined a
hazelnut coffee toffee and chocolate ice cream, with some raspberries and cherries adding to the visual flair of the postre. Throughout the dinner, the service was kindly, the musicians were entertaining, the cuisine was of a consistently high quality and we went home happy. Our memorable dinner and intimate live concert came to around 50 euros a head with wine included. 24/7 Valencia team Mon C/ San Vicente Martír, 23 Tel 96 351 27 70 Zona Plaza Ayuntamiento www.monvalencia.com Open everyday with live flamenco. 12 p.m – 3 a.m Menú del día (Monday – Friday): 11.90€ (drink not included) Menú del día (Saturday – Sunday): 14.90€ (drink not included) Menú desgustación (tasting menu for two): 25€ (drink not included) Tapas (available all day): 1.80€ – 13.95€ Salads: 9.95€ – 10.95€ Cold starters 9.95€ – 11.95€ Warm starters 8.50€ – 11.95€ Rice and Pasta 9.95€ – 11.95€ Meat 11.95 – 19.95€ Desserts 4.95€ – 5.60€ Wines: Reds, whites and cavas from Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Valencia region.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL
VALENCIA CONTINUE TO PROGRESS After the disappointment of losing by a solitary goal at the beginning of February in Málaga, Valencia CF have responded by remaining unbeaten since and continue to progress in the right direction both on and off the park. The weekend following their trip to La Rosaleda, the club were on their travels again, this time to Catalunya, and a league encounter with Espanyol. Los Chés had something to prove after being knocked out of the Copa del Rey earlier in the year by the Barcelona club, and they got their revenge by taking all three points in a ‘smash and grab’ performance that left the home fans bewildered. Former Levante UD striker Felipe Caicedo had the best chance of the first half for the home side, but was denied by a point-blank save by Diego Alves. At half-time Nuno Santos was forced to make a change when injured midfielder Enzo Pérez was replaced by André Gomes. This added more creativity to the visitors’ play and just after the hour mark they scored the opening goal of the game. Like so many of the team’s goals this
season, it came from the left flank. Fullback Gayà, who arguably has been Valencia’s player of the season to date, sent in a whipping low cross to the front post that Pablo Piatti reacted to first and managed to poke past the keeper. As a result of that goal, Espanyol’s efforts intensified and they would have equalised except for a fantastic goal line clearance from Gayà, when it looked for certain that substitute Stuani would score. With five minutes remaining, Valencia doubled their lead. Dani Parejo bent a free kick over the wall from about 25 yards out. The effort hit the inside of the post before rebounding off the keeper’s back and nestling fortuitously into the goal. Feeling the game was already over, the Valencia defence switched off and the home side pulled a goal back a minute from time through Sergio García. The Espanyol captain is the idol of the home fans, after recently turning down a 20-million-euro move to Chinese second division side Hebei Zhongji, and when he latched on to a poor defensive pass by Parejo to emphatically lash the ball past Alves, the stadium erupted and gave the home side renewed hope. A nervy few minutes of injury time followed but the visitors held out to secure maximum points and reclaim fourth position in the league. Valencia then returned home and played a friendly behind closed doors against Russian side Zenit St Petersburg at the
training ground in Paterna. Dani Parejo again scored, this time the only goal of the game, in what was to prove a useful exercise for the eastern Europeans as they continued the winter programme training camp in Spain. Next came a league game and a match up with the underrated Getafe. At the beginning of the year the small Madrid outfit named former Valencia favourite Quique Sánchez Flores as their coach, and he got a warm ovation from the home supporters. His club frustrated and matched Valencia in every department and the teams were only separated at the end of the game by a dubious penalty. Negredo went down in the box from a clumsy challenge by a Getafe defender halfway through the second half and, much to the relief of an increasingly restless Mestalla, the referee pointed to the spot. The drama continued as Negredo took the ball from the usual penalty taker and skipper, Dani Parejo, and duly sent the keeper the wrong way to the delight of all concerned with Valencia. A harsh result for the stubborn Getafe side, but just the kind of victory top teams need if they are going to be in the mix and challenging for trophies at the end of a season. Valencia finished off February with a second trip to Andalusia and a fixture with Córdoba. The newly promoted side have not found life easy in La Liga and
twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 are in a dogfight with numerous clubs to avoid relegation.
squaring for the little Argentinian to side foot into the corner of the net.
Again, the coach of Valencia’s opponents was another former player and manager, Miroslav Djukic, who took over at the Estadio Nuevo Arcángel in October of last year.
Off the field, Valencia CF have a new official radio station. Covering the Valencia region only, it can be located on match days at 101.5 FM and will be transmitting periodically at other times. Not to be outdone, Levante also cover all their games live on 102.5 FM.
The match was not of the best quality and, consequently, it was fitting that Valencia’s winner would be courtesy of a mishit shot from Piatti. His fluffed volley bounced hard into the ground and looped over Mikel Saizar’s outstretched palms, as both the ball and keeper ended in the back of the net. Earlier, André Gomes had put the visitors ahead before Algerian international Nabil Ghilas had equalised for Los Califas. Piatti’s winner, nine minutes from time, ensured consecutive away victories in the league for Valencia for the first time in 22 months. March started with a home victory against a Real Sociedad team looking to ‘park the bus’ and stifle Valencia’s attacking qualities for as long as possible. Since the arrival of David Moyes, the Basque side have become a tougher proposition to beat and it took two goals in the second half from Pablo Piatti to secure the points. The first goal had an element of luck about it as his shot took a wicked deflection off a Sociedad defender, but the second was sublime, and a fantastic team goal. A succession of passes along the floor eventually found Feghouli getting in behind the defence and
Los Granotas continue to struggle at the foot of the table but showed remarkable resilience in their latest home match against Granada. One goal down with two minutes left in regulation time, Levante scored two goals to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. Camarasa on 88 minutes, and then Barral two minutes into injury time gave the many fans who left the ground early a pleasant surprise when they turned on their car radios for the journey home. Other than that notable victory, February has been a mixed month in the barrios of Orriols and Alboraya. A lousy 2-0 loss at home to Athletic Bilbao was followed by a fantastic 4-1 demolition of Málaga six days later. A trip to Barcelona ended up with Lionel Messi scoring a hat trick on his 300th La Liga appearance as the Catalan side ran out worthy 5-0 winners. This was followed by a 4-2 loss at Rayo Vallecano, for whom Alberto Bueno scored four times. The former Spanish under-21 international, who once played for Derby County, bagged his goals in a 16-minute period in the first half after Castaño had given the visitors an early lead. A late consolation goal for Uche will have done little to lighten the mood of the Levante faithful and, with a visit to
Real Madrid on the horizon, things do not seem to be getting any easier for Lucas Alcaraz and his team. John Howden Anyone wishing to watch Valencia or Levante can obtain tickets at the box offices at both grounds, or visit their websites at: www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com FOOTBALL CALENDAR

CLUBLAND
24/7 VALENCIA these weird statues you’ve been seeing scattered around town will be burnt. It’s quite spectacular and another great excuse.. I mean completely justified tradition... to celebrate with a few drinks and a night out. Regarding clubs, there are a few places to keep an eye out for this month. As always La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 4) in the port area has a great list of DJs playing this month, especially on Friday the 13th (yes… another Friday the 13th) when DJ Darius (a young Parisian with a growing reputation) will be there. If you don’t know him, check him out with his ‘90s chill electro sounds. This club stays open until breakfast-time!
It’s Fallas in Valencia, and if it’s your first time here… run. Just kidding, you might want to get a cab to the airport, it’s faster. Now normally I would list a bunch of worthy clubs and bars to check out every month, but this month Valencia is celebrating its favourite tradition: Las Fallas, so I will dedicate a large part to that. For those of you who don’t know exactly what is being celebrated during Fallas, let me tell you that I have lived here for over 9 years now… and even I’m not too sure. But what I do know is that the whole town starts a monthlong celebration of traditional clothing, fireworks, bangers, paellas in tents, alcohol, mobile discos and bangers. Yeah, that was deliberate. If you are here on holiday, or you work in Valencia, this month can be a bit unpractical when it comes to moving around, getting places and sleeping. But once you’ve figured those things out, you’re in for a good time. One thing that I actually do enjoy about Fallas are the verbenas, which are a kind of mobile disco. Set in the streets, you can dance to electro music while drinking beers in the warm weather, surrounded by people from around the world, a bit like Mardi Gras except without the beads. The best neighbourhood for this is Ruzafa, last year was amazing and I’m expecting nothing less this time round. The big night is on 19 March, La Nit de la Cremá, the burning night. This is when all of
For you Erasmus students out there, make your way to Caribbean’s (C/ Bélgica, 5) any Wednesday of the month, for some salsa and Latin-inspired EDM (electronic dance music to you Meldrews out there). It’s near the Mestalla football stadium. If you have never been to Mya (Autovía del Saler, 16), it is the underground nightclub found in the ‘City of Arts and Sciences’ part of town. With its very high ceilings, good-looking go-go dancers, young audience and quite satisfying electro music, you might not mind paying high prices for the drinks. A night to go this month would probably be on 7 March, which is hosted by DJ Javi Torres with his Latin, hip-hop & electro tunes. You will notice a very big increase of people on the streets these days, and you want to be where the action is. Luckily for you, the action is literally everywhere in March. So make sure you are in the mood for some partying, because it’s going to be a long night. Many people will be in the very pleasant Cánovas area. A great way to start any night is with some food and cool beers. If you’ve never been, I recommend you go to the American-owned Portland Ale House (C/ Salamanca, 10 izq), home to the best burgers in Valencia and a great crowd, being a popular meeting ground for Brits, Americans and Spanish. You don’t just go there for the food however, as they regularly do intercambio & quiz nights and occasional live shows. After

that you can cross the road to Roa (C/ Salamanca, 8) for some really good and well-priced cocktails. I don’t know about you, but I love mojitos, and I thought I had tried them all before finding this place. Thanks to fresh ingredients and innovative takes on well-known drinks, it feels like you are discovering the cocktails all over again. I went to the Carmen for my birthday last month and it had been a while since my last time. Only a few years ago it was the place to go for anyone between the ages of 18 to 50. The places haven’t really changed, the ‘relations people’ are still approaching you in the streets with their ‘free shots’ to lead you into their bars and then surprise you with prices you thought were only found in New York or Soho in London. Everyone knows that since Ruzafa came back in full force as the hip, trendy neighbourhood, the Carmen has suffered a bit. To be honest I was a bit disappointed, but thankfully there is always a diamond in the rough, and its name is La Infanta (Plaza Tossal, 3). If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere and a surprisingly good wine list, with some old Hollywood movies from the ‘30s in the background, then this is the place to go. It’s easy to find, as it is right in the main square of El Carmen, and spacious yet cosy. Right, I hope and know that you will all have a great time no matter what you do. Remember, as I mentioned before, the big night this month is the 19th, and pretty much every club is doing a burning themed night, so it’s up to you as to which is the best option. PS: For those of you who find it difficult to sleep, March isn’t going to be your month. There are ways of adapting though, and instead of counting sheep at night, just count the bangers, explosions and fireworks, you might fall asleep instantly.

Is everything a coincidence or is there a reason behind every encounter we have along the path of our lives?
SAMARIA COACHING What is Samaria Coaching? Samaria Coaching is an alternative type of coaching. It is a personalised service for the individual where I, Mari Trini Romeu, accompany you as an adviser and companion on your journey. Together at Samaria Coaching, we will overcome your problems and obstacles and you will achieve your goals. Can you take us through the stages for each individual in reaching their goals? Every client is unique and special. We are incredible beings and we possess extraordinary abilities that help us reach our goals. In general, the phases to reach our goals are the following: a) To recognise yourself as being made of body, mind and spirit. b) To recognise your abilities. We are capable of so much and we are not conscious of it. c) To free yourself of everything that impedes you from realising your full potential and capabilities. We are burdened with many things: fears, traumas, ties, restraints and prejudices. Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia
d) To get a suit tailor-made for you means constructing the life that you truly want. What is the gap between our progress in technology and our spiritual progress in the 21st century? The society that we live in has been absorbed and dominated by the EGO, which has brought innumerable advances in technology. We look outside of our bodies that we naturally possess internally and we attempt to reproduce it externally. We are more interested in moulding our bodies to the exterior, like plasma, via technology and machines than via our own machine, which is our own body. The body possesses innate abilities that lie dormant and sleeping but that we possess as living beings. An example would be the CAPACITY to LOCATE. Technology sets about to create better radar. We have the best radar in existence. We are capable of locating things, people, water, wind. The same thing happens in the sea, dolphins possess an incredible radar which can detect a school of fish from surprising distances. When birds are migrating or flying, that is another clear example of radar. Why do we spoil ourselves spending time on inventing new machines? We should dedicate just a little more of our time in improving our innate abilities, which will help us in the small but important things in our daily lives.
Nothing is coincidence. In our lives, although free will exists, everything is programmed to occur. We are a CREATION of our BEING, and we live according to a script that we ourselves have written but that we can constantly modify as free will exists. For example, you and I met by coincidence a good few years ago and the world put you on my path because one day we would work together. We have worked together in past lives. Your Celtic roots unite us because I have been a Celt and we have known each other in past lives. Now both of us symbolically have Spanish blood, which runs through my veins and you feel this even though you don’t have Spanish blood but, if you close your eyes, you do. We are what we are now and what we were in past lives. We are the essence of all of this and this essence accompanies us and means that nothing in our lives is really coincidence. (The interviewer of this piece is of Irish descent, whose distant ancestors were from Galicia in Spain.) How can Mari Trini Romeu help? Mari Trini Romeu is an ASTRAL CONDUCTOR and can help you connect with the essence of your being and to know yourself. DO YOU TRULY KNOW YOURSELF?
